Frugal Family Fun: 11 Ways to Watch Movies for Less

You can buy, borrow, stream, or rent movies nowadays. You can even go to a real theater and watch movies. But if you're not careful, all that movie watching can take an out-sized bite from your budget.

Here, from cheapest to most expensive, are 11 ways to watch movies in the 21st century:

* Borrow from the library. It's free, and you'd be surprised how many titles they have.

* Swap with friends. Another freebie! If you're the organizing type, get together a movie swap at work or playgroup. The more subtle types will just start giving movies away, hoping someone gets the hint and reciprocates.

* Free viewings. Community centers and other groups often show movies for free. Look in the newspaper or on the library bulletin board, for starters.

* Garage sales and thrift shops. Almost every garage sale has a box of movies for sale. If you still have a VHS player, you might find free movies! If you turn around and sell them at your own garage later, score this one as free.

* Amazon Prime streaming. For $79, you can stream from among thousands of movies and TV shows on any whim for a full year. That's $1.52 per week - hard to beat.

* Hulu. Watch TV shows and movies on your computer for free. For a couple of bucks per week, you can expand your selection and watch movies on game consoles and practically every electronic device you carry around. Hulu programming does contain commercials.

* Video rental stores. They still exist - and they're not a bad deal compared to buying movies or going to the theater. Their prices have come down, and some of them let you watch as many movies as you want for a monthly fee.

* Netflix or other DVD-by-mail companies. The attraction of Netflix is that you never pay late fees. However, if you're paying by the month and you have the same DVD on the counter the whole time, it might as well be a late fee.

* Buy it new. For less than $20, you can buy a movie - at the grocery store if you want. It's still not a bad deal compared to the next higher option.

* Cable. Here's where it starts getting pricier. $65 to $75 per month is an average bill, and the deluxe package can be twice that. And the temptation is to "get your money's worth" by watching too much. It's the cruise ship buffet line of video watching.

* Theaters. We hope you shop around, use coupons, and get the matinee pricing. Give yourself extra credit if you fill the kids up so they can't eat another bite before you go to the theater, and you find a Tuesday night $2 special. Tonight I made a ham for dinner...I cut the ham in half, so now I have an extra dinner! YAY ME

I wanted to add something like a brown sugar rub and I searched for a recipe and I actually had all the ingredients on hand. Which is rare for me

The recipe is as follows:

Ingredients

1 cup packed brown sugar
2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice
1/2 teaspoon mustard powder
1/4 teaspoon onion powder
freshly ground black pepper to taste

Directions

Mix together brown sugar, pumpkin pie spice, mustard powder, onion powder, and pepper in a bowl until well blended. Makes enough rub to cover one 3 to 5 pound ham. To be sure sugars form a crust, do not cover the ham during cooking. If not using immediately, store in an airtight tin.

I didn't have pumpkin spice on hand...hehehe so I used

1tsp of cinnamon

1tsp of nutmeg...

I was pleasantly surprised because my very, very, picky 12 year old daughter ate 2 pieces...

When I make again I will decrease the amount of nutmeg. It was a little overpowering for me...

SPELLING WORDS FUN

When my oldest daughter was younger she struggled with memorizing spelling words. I knew in order to help her I needed to make it FUN. I wanted her to learn good study habits from a young age, but also retain the information. I have learned that when you are interested in what you are studying it's easier to remember. Being that she wasn't interested because she had difficulties I needed to come up with something lets just say GOOFY...to help her....

At that time I babysat(6 kids) and had a very large ABC rug....I thought I could use this to help her study her spelling words. I didn't know how my idea would work but I thought it couldn't hurt...

The rug was similiar to the above picture....

At first my daughter looked at me like I was CRAZY. I convienced her to try it.....

As I called out each word for her to spell she would have to JUMP on each letter as she SPELLED out the word.
Sometimes we made the game a little harder she would have to jump on one foot and if the other foot touched the ground before she was finished spelling the word...she would have to start over again....which is repetition, but she thought she was just having FUN!

After many weeks of jumping and spelling.....
Her spelling grades improved and another mother asked me to help her daughter improve her spelling also.

My daughter who is now 21 is attending college and studying Elementary Education. To this day she remembers jumping and spelling her spelling words....

ALL I CAN SAY IS THIS LOOKS AMAZING... I HAVE TO ADD THIS TO MY TO MAKE LIST,

Ingredients

1 cup all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
6 tablespoons butter
2 ounces semisweet chocolate (or 1/3 cup chocolate chips)
1 cup sugar (2/3 cup & 1/3 cup, added separately)
3 tablespoons plus 1/3 cup Dutch-processed cocoa
1 tablespoon vanilla extract

1/4 teaspoon salt
1/3 cup milk
1 egg yolk
1/3 cup brown sugar
11/2 cups hot water
Whipped cream or ice cream

Instructions

Coat the inside of a 2 1/2- to 5-quart slow cooker with cooking spray. (Note: the cake's cooking time and final appearance will vary depending on your crock's size.)
Whisk together the flour and baking powder in a medium bowl and set aside. In a large bowl, melt the butter and chocolate in the microwave or over a pan of simmering water and mix well.
Whisk in the 2/3 cup of sugar, 3 tablespoons of cocoa, vanilla extract, salt, milk, and egg yolk. Add the flour mixture and stir until thoroughly mixed.
Pour the batter into the slow cooker and spread it evenly. In a medium bowl, whisk together the remaining sugar, cocoa, and hot water until the sugar is dissolved.
Pour the mixture over the batter in the slow cooker. Cover and cook on high for 1 to 2 hours, depending on the size of the crock pot.
Even when done, the cake will be very moist and floating on a layer of molten chocolate, but you'll know it's ready when nearly all of the cake is set and the edges begin to pull away from the sides of the pot. (As you check, try not to let the condensed steam from the lid drip onto the cake.)
When it's done, turn off the power and remove the lid. Let it cool for 25 minutes, then serve it in bowls topped with whipped cream or ice cream. Makes 6 to 8 servings

Little gift bags out of newspaper. Plus, it's a great way to recycle! Pick a good section of your paper (the comics are always fun)

Cleaning off my desk always gets my brain working...Today I recycled tons of old newspapers. I thought....hummmm wonder what I could do with these for crafts....(paper mache) fun and messy! Then I saw the comics and thought I could turn these into gift bags....These would be great for in a pinch birthday bag.

I found a great place that explains step by step...

PVA glue. This is a bookmaker's glue and can be found at most art supply stores. Elmer's will work as well.
Newspaper. For the example bags above, I used a Japanese paper that measured (when folded) 11 1/2" wide and 15" tall, and the comics of my regular paper, which were folded and cut down to 11" by 11".
A hole punch and a grommet setter or a Clikit tool. I found my Clikit tool at a discount store. If you google "Clikit" there are several entries.

1. Soften and add shine to hair. When washing your hair, rub coffee grounds through wet hair and rinse. For brown hair, coffee grounds add highlights.
2. Use coffee grounds as an exfoliant for skin. Pat on skin, massage over skin, rinse.
3. Add coffee grounds to your skin mask beauty routine.
4. Make homemade tattoos (temporary) with henna and coffee grounds.
5. Fertilize plants. Old coffee grounds are nutrient-rich for plants that thrive in an acidic soil.
6. Add used coffee grounds to the pots of indoor plants.
7. Work used coffee grounds into your garden soil before seed planting. After your plants start to emerge, work in coffee grounds near the plants. Used coffee grounds are said to repel snails and slugs as well as adding nutrients to the soil.
8. Increase your carrot and radish harvest by mixing seeds with dry coffee grounds before planting the seeds.
9. Use coffee grounds to repel ants.
10. Keep cats from using your garden as a kitty box by spreading used coffee grounds and orange peels throughout flower beds.
11. Deodorize a freezer. Place a bowl with used coffee grounds in the freezer to remove unwanted odors. Add a few drops of vanilla to coffee grounds.
12. Rub coffee grounds on hands to get rid of smells from chopping or cutting up pungent foods.
13. Make a used coffee grounds sachet. Fill old nylons or cheescloth with dry used coffee grounds. Hang in closets to absorb odors.
14. When you need an abrasive cleaner, coffee grounds can be used. Be careful of any surfaces that might stain.
15. Remove furniture scratches with wet coffee grounds.
16. Got a fireplace? Sprinkle wet coffee grounds over the ashes to keep from becoming engulfed in the plume of dust ashes create when you need to remove them.
17. Dye fabric, paper or Easter eggs. Simply add used coffee grounds to warm water and let sit a bit to create a dye.
18. After you give your dog a bath, rub coffee grounds through the coat of your pet. Coffee grounds are said to repel fleas.
19. Keep bait worms alive by mixing coffee grounds into the soil before you add worms.
20. Grow mushrooms on old coffee grounds.

Well once I used coffee for a DIY shower scrub... I smelled real yummy, but my shower was a big mess...If you noticed I said ONCE...will never do again way to big of a mess for me!

FINALLY...recipe after recipe...I found one that is very good

I was cleaning my desk off and I came across this recipe that I must of written down quite some time ago....Because the last time I cleaned off my desk was ummmm...so long I can't remember.

I really wish I could credit this recipe, but all I wrote down were the ingrediants... sorry!

I love this recipe, it's honestly a little too sweet for me, and that's very odd for me to say that, because living in the south my southern sweet tea is so sweet your hair stands up! hehehe

I used my Keurig and brewed the largest coffee mug of coffee set aside until cold

I used Dunkin Donut Dark Roast

Then in my Ninja or you could use a blender

BLEND:

1 1/2 C --Cold coffee

1/2 C--Milk

1/2 Sugar

2 TBSP Caramel-I used ice cream caramel topping

1 tsp. Chocolate syrup-I used hershey

BLEND.....BLEND.....BLEND......

Then add

Pinch of vanilla-ummm I poured about 1/4 tsp...

then add your ice..

BLEND AGAIN......

THEN

ENJOY....

*I added more milk and ice to cut down on the sweetness!

Project Instructions

Lay the t-shirt on a flat surface. Cut the sleeves off, then cut them open so you have a long strip and set aside.
Cut a big “U” from the neck opening about ½ way down the t-shirt. Leave about a 3-4” width for each strap. The length of the straps will determine how deep to cut the “U”.
Along the bottom of the t-shirt, cut vertical 1” strips about 6-8” up the t-shirt.
Tie the front and the back of the strips together and knot.
Add ribbon strips, if desired, into the knots.
Knot the sleeve strips at the base of the handles. Tie on as many ribbons as desired and trim to the desired length.
