Please ignore the fact that the photo for this is not the same as the books below…I didn’t get to read both my April books due to my move, but I’ll be reviewing Valentine for May!

All The Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr (BOTM Add-on)

All The Light We Cannot See is actually a book I got for my mom for Christmas last year. She actually didn’t love it…said it was too descriptive. The Nightingale is one of her favs so I thought she might like this one as the 2 get compared a lot. Figured I would read it also to form an opinion! Like The Nightingale, this novel takes place in WWII, mostly centered in France. It starts in the year 1944 with a blind girl named Marie-Laure who is alone in her house as a bombing is going on outside. In the same city, a German boy named Werner Pfennig who is working for the Nazis is trapped under a bombed building. The book goes on to detail their lives leading up to that point, from their childhoods in France and Germany…Marie-Laure’s life with her father and Werner’s life as an orphan, and eventually meets up to where the book started. This is definitely one of those books that I’d consider a saga. Its pretty long, and basically details the life (in this case, lives) of its characters from childhood to adulthood, with some other character stories thrown in as well. Lucky for me, those are the types of stories I love, so I really ended up loving this one! I didn’t think it was too descriptive as my mom did, though I don’t usually find that an issue to begin with (I actually kind of like really descriptive stuff as I feel more involved in the setting). Honestly, I think I liked All The Light We Cannot See a little bit more than The Nightingale. I really enjoyed how their stories connected and the characters were a little more interesting, but maybe that’s just because its more fresh in my mind. It did take a while to get through as its long, but I was kept interested in the whole time. If you love historical fiction, definitely try this one out!

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Sometimes you just need a really light, fun book as a palate cleanser! This romance got rave reviews on both BOTM and Goodreads, so I picked it as my birthday month add-on. Unfortunately, it took me longer to get through due to my move…I think there was a whole week where I was just too busy to read, but I just finished it and absolutely loved it! It follows the romance between first son of the United States, Alex Claremont-Diaz, and Prince Henry of the UK, and the tensions their romance causes politically. Yes…its completely implausible and silly, but so much fun! This book actually had me laughing at a lot of bits and crying towards the end. The writing style at first seems a bit juvenile, but its actually very witty and really well-written (think more cheeky blog post than high brow novel type writing…still good, but different). This is probably the best romance book I’ve read, which granted is a very short list (my runner up is probably Well Met). At any rate, I’d highly suggest this if you’re looking for something light and sweet!

The Girl with the Louding Voice is narrated by Adunni, a teenage girl living in a remote village in modern-day Nigeria. All Adunni wants is an education, but after her mother passes away, her father sells her to an older man for marriage. After running away, she finds herself as a housemaid of a wealthy but abusive couple. She fights as hard as she can to read and to do whatever it takes to receive an education and rise above her surroundings. Since The Girl with the Louding Voice is told in Adunni’s own voice, its written in broken English and does take a little bit to get used to. After the first few pages, though, you do get used to it! I think the fact that this is told in her voice makes the story much more real and allows you to really connect with Adunni. As she learns more about English towards the end of the book, the narration actually improves. This is such a sad but heartwarming story and I thoroughly enjoyed this book! It reminds me a bit of Where the Crawdads Sing. Despite the heavy material, there were actually quite a few parts that made me chuckle (Adunni doesn’t understand why no one on “Facebook” is facing their books! ).

I finally got my Kindle! Also, it was a steal…on sale for like 35% off + a 15% off coupon + $25 in credits. Anyway…I wanted something quick to read, and I’ve had this short story by Blake Crouch (one of my favorites!) on my list for awhile, which is only available on Kindle. Its part of a series called “Forward”, which is all sci-fi based short stories. Its about a video game developer who accidentally creates an AI that she ends up becoming attached to. I really loved this one! It reminded me a lot of the movie Deus Ex Machina. I will say the ending was a bit predictable for me (unlike Crouch’s other novels), but it was still an enjoyable quick read.

The Great Believers begins in the year 1985, following an art gallery director, Yale Tishman, as he navigates the AIDS crisis in Chicago. He struggles to come to terms with the fact that his friends are dying one by one, including his close friend, Nico, and that there is a possibility he could be next. Nico’s little sister, Fiona, is one of the only people Yale has left to rely on. During the same time, Yale is approached by an elderly women, Nora, who wants to bring a collection of 1920s era paintings to Yale’s gallery, which could either be the gallery’s biggest asset or a huge mistake. The novel then jumps to the year 2015 where an adult Fiona is trying to track down her missing daughter in Paris who has become involved with a cult. She struggles with memories of the AIDS crisis in the 80’s and the death of her friends and brother while trying to locate her only daughter. The novel jumps back and forth between these 2 time periods. Overall, I liked this book…though maybe not quite as good as the reviews had me to believe. I found myself really enjoying the storyline surrounding Yale’s personal life and even the Fiona chapters, but really found the whole art gallery storyline to be a drag and not very engaging. I just didn’t care about Nora or her history at all as much as Yale and Fiona. While I loved these 2 different timelines, I do wish they were a bit more connected beyond the fact that Yale had known Fiona. It was a bit of a struggle to get through this one, but I did like it overall and really liked the ending and how it wrapped up.

Oh my goodness I LOVED this book! I finished it in 3 days and literally couldn’t put it down. Oona Lockhart is celebrating her 19th birthday in 1982 which coincides with New Years. However, on the stroke of midnight on New Years Eve, she suddenly wakes up as a 51 year old in the year 2015. She is completely unaware of this current future life she’s leading or why it happened. Every year at midnight, she continues to jump to a different point in her life, and must navigate that year’s challenges, most of the time not being familiar with the current trends, technology, or the people who surround her. Her only source of information are letters that are left by her former self to help prepare her for the year, but without giving her enough information in order to change her outcomes. This novel was just perfect…like a chick lit but with sci fi and even a couple good twists thrown in. I was so excited to see which years Oona would travel to next. It probably helps that I’m more or less obsessed with time travel related stuff. I would kill for a sequel to this book where Oona explores more years of her out-of-order life!

Well 2020 has been a real shit show so far hasn’t it? Steve and I are set to buy our first home together next week. We’re really nervous as to if all this will effect our closing, even though we’ve been assured that everything is settled and right on track for our closing date (whether that’ll be in person or remote is yet to be seen). So much can happen in a week though, and no ones ever really dealt with this type of thing before.

A bit about the house though… its very close to the one we’re currently renting which makes everything super convenient (same train station, area, etc). The style of the house is a split-level, so its kind of a cool set up with staggered floors. There’s technically 4 bedrooms (the one is kind of an addition on the lower level part of the house). Aside from the bedroom, we’re planning on turning one into a workout/gym room, and the other 2 will be our own spaces similar to what we have now (Steve’s being an office, and mine being a sort of guest room/makeup & wardrobe thing). The backyard is super private with tons of trees, and the area in general is nice and quiet, which you know I love.

It’s a bit scary to be buying a house when the economy is steadily tumbling. We got a really good interest rate at least that we were able to lock in when they were at all time lows. I had a lot of excitement about the house a couple weeks ago before things kind of blew up (painting! decor! remodeling!), all of which has sort of…gone down quite a bit. With some small exceptions, I’ll probably make do with what we have for the time being.

I’ve been working from home the past week (well, starting Tuesday), which has been wonderful. I’m so jealous of people who can do this on a regular basis. I guess this will last through at least next week and then who knows what will happen. My company hates this work from home thing so I’m sure I’ll get pulled back in the minute the city ends the lockdown, corona be damned.

I’ve been trying to keep the same schedule, minus 1 hour which I’d previously use for commuting, which I now use for sleeping. Luckily I workout at home anyway so I don’t have to worry about a gym being closed. I’ve been trying to add a walk outside after “work” or at least a walk on the treadmill in here to make up for the 2mi or so I would normally walk daily getting to/from work. Its nice to actually be able to make use of the monitor, keyboard, and mouse I got like 4 years ago for my design business (pictured). They’re holding up pretty well.

The kitties seem to be ambivalent to our extended presence around here, as kitties will do. It’s nice to be able to keep an eye on them though…even if they literally do nothing.

Until next time…stay safe out there!

Well I got 2 library books and pushed my February BOTM to March. I’m actually planning on getting a Kindle (again) next month because I’ve recently learned you can load library books onto a Kindle (whaaa?). So while I really really do prefer physical books, I’m gonna try that out for a bit since its just so much easier than having to drag myself to the library which isn’t super closeby.

Us Against You by Fredrik Backman

This is the sequel to Beartown which I read in November. This one actually got higher ratings so I was excited to read it (also, maybe unimportant but how gorgeous is that cover??). Us Against You continues where Beartown left off. After the sexual assault of a main character in the previous novel, the town is up-heaved with the victim’s family continuously receiving threats, the hockey club about to be de-funded, and the majority of Beartown’s hockey players now playing for rival town, Hed. A mysterious politician steps in to try to save the club, a controversial coach is hired for the newly established A-Team, and the town’s rivalry with Hed eventually leads to further tensions and tragedy for Beartown. The reviews were right…I absolutely LOVED this book, more so than Beartown. Backman really has a way with character development and expressing, and the dramas that unfold between these characters are written so eloquently and genuinely. My main complaint about the original Beartown was BAckman’s tendency to go on these long philosophical narrations at the beginning of chapters, but that was toned down quite a bit in Us Against You. This was an all-around well-written and beautiful book that will really tug on your hearstrings. 5 stars from me!

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

The Turn of the Key by Ruth Ware

This is a very quick read, typical thriller. It was actually available on Book of the Month a few months back, but I ended up not getting it. Rowan accepts a live-in nanny position for a wealthy family that lives in a large property they’ve renovated in the Scottish Highlands called Heatherbrae House. While the parents are away on business, Rowan encounters a number of terrifying activities that she can’t explain…mysterious sounds above her bedroom, objects that seem to disappear and reappear, lights and music turning on and off in the middle of the night, etc. In addition, the children she’s watching are anything but immaculate, and the only other person living on the grounds is a handyman who she can’t decide if she completely trusts. The novel is told in the format of a series of letters that Rowan, now in prison, has written to her lawyer to recount the events of her stay at Heatherbrae and declare her innocence. It kept me interested the whole time and was definitely a page turner, but it took awhile to get to the actual twist(s) and then it felt rushed at the end. While I did enjoy the final twist, there were so many other pointless twists that had nothing to do with anything that had really been happening in the book and I feel they didn’t further the plot along at all. Because of that I’d give this 3.5 starts instead of the 4 I would normally have.

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

The month of the thrillers…

The Wives by Tarryn Fisher (BOTM)

I was really looking forward to this book due to everyone raving on it in the BOTM Facebook group. I’m a sucker for a good psychological thriller, and this had the bonus of being pretty short too (which I welcomed after the last couple longer books). The plot sounded intriguing…a woman is in a plural marriage where her husband is married to 2 other wives, but the wives live in separate areas and never meet. She discovers the identity of one of the other wives, and out of curiosity she tracks her down which leads to secrets being uncovered about who her husband really is. I will say this…I was definitely engaged in reading this, and it was a very quick and exciting read. However, I was extremely disappointed in the turn this book ended up taking and the ending overall (no spoilers, but it was just…unsatisfying). I knew halfway through that the story would go 1 of 2 ways, both of which were completely predictable (yawn), but 1 of which I would have preferred over the other, which isn’t the way it went. The very last page was even more annoying than the entirety of the book. It was well written and engaging, so that’s my main reason for the 3 stars. This is one of those stories where maybe it would be better in a visual medium and not in written format. If you’re an avid reader of thrillers, this will be too predictable for you and I’d suggest skipping it.

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

The Sun Down Motel by Simone St. James (BOTM)

Thriller #2! My only hope for this book was that it be better than The Wives …thankfully it was. The Sun Down Motel takes place in 2 time periods and is narrated by 2 women; Vivienne Delany, a night clerk at a poorly maintained roadside hotel who goes missing in the early 1980s, and Carli (Viv’s niece) who goes looking for her 35 years later, taking the same job at the Sun Down which hasn’t changed a bit. This has quite a bit of supernatural elements that I wasn’t expecting. I’m normally not a fan of ghost stuff but I think it worked really well with this book. The thriller/mystery aspect and the ghost story parts blended really seamlessly together. This is an all-around solid thriller…not my absolute favorite or anything but definitely good and worth a read!

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Remember monthly favorites posts? Those were fun, but for some reason I stopped doing them. I think this year I’m going to start a Quarterly Favorites (because a month seems too often). As a way to kick it off, I figured I’d compile my favorites of 2019! These are all products I purchased last year and loved. It was super difficult to pick things from the entire year, but here goes…

Favorite Skincare Product

This ones a doozy. I’ve tried SO many products in 2019. Lots of misses, but a few hits. Out of the things I loved, I’m going to have to go with the First Aid Beauty Pure Skin Cleanser as the winner. I know cleanser is a super boring product to get excited about, but I just love this one. Its super gentle and I feel like when I started using this cleanser my crazy dry flakes (which I suffer from year round) noticeably diminished. The texture is creamy and light and its fragrance free and cruelty free as well! While the price isn’t wonderful for a cleanser ($21), I’ve been picking it up during sales or with coupons.

I’ll be honest…this wasn’t a great year for makeup. I jumped around between products a lot and I have yet to find the perfect cruelty-free foundation/BB Cream despite trying and returning so many. Maybe next year. I did, however, find a great brow product that I can foresee myself using for awhile and that is the Anastasia Beverly Hills Perfect Brow Pencil. I’ve been way more into my brows this year; I started getting them threaded semi-regularly, began using a brow serum, and absolutely must fill them in now! While I’ve tried a couple Anastasia products (the other being the brow wiz), I like this simple pencil. While its not retractable like the brows whiz, I feel like it departs a stronger amount of color and I prefer to sharpen it so I get a stronger point.

I wasn’t super into hair products last year, but I’ve been pretty loyal to the ones I’ve been using. Its a short list compared to past years: Paul Mitchell Lavender Mint Shampoo & Condition, Its a 10 Hair Mask, Its a 10 Miracle Leave-In Lite, Paul Mitchell Skinny Serum, and Ouidad Curl Gel. I’ve honestly just been using those all year. The latest addition is probably my favorite though, which is the Its a 10 Miracle Leave-In Lite. This is a great leave in conditioner that conditions without weighing down my fine hair. I’ve experienced a lot less frizz since I started using this. The only downside is that it tends to run out kind of quickly. The only product I’m planning on adding to my hair routine this year is a conditioning cleanser for the days I workout but don’t want to shampoo.

I bought a decent amount of clothes this year, but there’s one item (well…items) that I absolutely love to death and that is the Everlane Authentic Stretch High-Rise Skinny Jean (also the Mid-Rise). While I’ve been wearing Everlane denim for a couple years now, they came out with the authentic stretch version more recently and these are THE most comfortable and well-fitting jeans I’ve ever worn. I have both the high and mid rise in black and dark blue, and love them both (although I’m partial to the high-rise because I’ve just been loving that style lately). They keep their stretch, are super comfy, and they don’t cost a fortune either. If I’m ever lucky enough to have a job where I can wear jeans everyday, I’d purchase more pairs!

Favorite Book

In order to be able to chose a book more easily, I stuck with books released in 2019 and eliminated the ones that I read this year but were released earlier (if I were to include them, though, Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine would be the winner). Even then, this was still difficult, but my favorite would have to be This Tender Land by William Kent Krueger. This is a heartwarming story of 4 orphans who set out on their own to support themselves and encounter various adventures and hardships along the way. Its a beautiful, well-written story and I’d highly suggest it!

Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens (library)

The “it” book of 2019…of course I had to read it! After 3 weeks of being on my library’s waitlist I was able to pick it up. I assumed I wouldn’t enjoy it because of all the hype, but for me it really did live up to the great reviews! Kya Clark (also known as the “marsh girl”) is left abandoned as a young child and is forced to survive on her own in the North Carolina marsh. The story follows the entirety of her life as a reclusive social outcast in her small town and the 2 loves she makes along the way. Her story is alternated with the “present day” (in this case, 1969/1970) where a murder of a young man in the marsh is being investigated. This book really tugged at my heartstrings! Its one that will definitely stay with me for awhile. It reminded me a lot of This Tender Land in a lot of ways as well. There a lot of nature descriptions. Like…a lot. So if thats something that you don’t like, this may not be for you (I don’t personally love excessive nature talk but I usually skim these paragraphs). The ending is a twist, and it seems that a lot of people hate it and its one of the main reasons for negative reviews I’ve seen, but I personally loved it. 5 stars for me!

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Long Bright River by Liz Moore (BOTM)

You know when I see a book that takes place in Philly, I choose it right away! Long Bright River takes place in present-day Philadelphia and explores the relationship between 2 sisters – younger sister, Kacey, is a drug addict living on the streets of Kensington, older sister, Mickey, is a cop who patrols those same streets. Though their relationship is strained, when Kacey disappears, Mickey takes on the task of trying to locate her at all costs, risking her life and job in the process. The story alternatives between the present day and their childhood. I didn’t immediately categorize this as a thriller because its really focused on the drama between the sisters and their relationships, but it really does have a thriller aspect to it as well which I loved, especially towards the end where it twists and turns all over the place…something I definitely wasn’t expecting! I will say this book took me a little while to get into (but that might have been because I started it right before the holidays). It picked up in the middle and then picked up quite a lot towards the end. The Philly-centric references were really cool for me to read as well!

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Christmas is 2 weeks away, but here I am just sharing my November books. Better late than never!

The Family Upstairs by Lisa Jewell (BOTM)

I don’t require too much for a 5 star thriller…just to keep me completely engrossed throughout and have a decent ending. The Family Upstairs is narrated by 3 characters and takes place in 2 time periods – the present, and the late 1980s. In the present day, Libby receives a letter on her 25th birthday stating that she will be inheriting her birth parent’s house. Soon after, she uncovers an article detailing the gruesome story of how they died in the house – a murder/suicide pact under mysterious circumstances, with the other children that were staying in the house missing and never to be heard from again. The 1980s time period is narrated by Libby’s brother as a child. Gradually, the stories converge and the mysteries surrounding the family and the deaths are uncovered. I really love thrillers set in multiple time periods, and especially about families. I literally couldn’t put this book down and finished it in just a few days (though if you had more time, I’d say you could probably read it in a sitting as its fairly short).

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Beartown by Fredrik Backman

I actually picked this book up from the library! Fun Fact: I don’t think I’ve checked a book out of the library since…um…high school? Before that? I couldn’t tell you. My goal for the new year, though, is to try my best to get books from the library and maybe only one a month from BOTM when possible. We’ll see. Anyway…Beartown was written by Fredrik Backman, author of A Man Called Ove which is one of my favorite books. However, I’d say there isn’t a whole lot of similarities between the two. AMCO, while sad at times, was also pretty light-hearted and sweet. Beartown, by contrast, is heavy. Very heavy. On the surface, the initial plot of a small town hockey team trying to win the finals to bring outside recognition to their otherwise failing town sounds a bit…Mighty Ducks. However, the subplot deals with sexual assault and is incredibly detailed, heart-wrenchingly sad, and pretty anger inducing. Its also completely realistic which is one of the reasons its so angering to read about. While beautifully written, the only complaint I really have about this book is that Backman tends to go on these paragraph-long narrations about philosophies of hockey, small town life, etc and it kind of takes away from the actual story and plot quite a bit. I’d say basically every chapter is full of little paragraphs like this, which I feel would have been better suited for the beginning and ending of the book, not necessarily throughout. Despite that, it was still a very moving read and I’m interested in picking up the sequel called Us Against You.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

And with that book, I officially completed my Goodreads 2019 Reading Challenge. Woo hoo!

This month’s books are both from Book of the Month, but neither are one of the actual October choices. I just wasn’t into any of this month’s selections (no thrillers for October? ) so they let me chose a member favorite which is how I ended up with Well Met!

The Devil in the White City by Erik Larson

My mom has been begging me to read The Devil in the White City since she loved it and I expressed interest in it (its been on my to read list for awhile). I will say I was a little hesitant at first since it does have some mixed reviews and is a bit long, and is also a nonfiction which isn’t really a genre I read much of. The novel follows 2 real events that take place concurrently in Chicago during the late 19th century (which is honestly my favorite time period to read about – I got a lot of vibes from The Alienist in this one). The one story-line follows the Chicago World’s Fair – its inception, construction, and execution – and the many challenges that were met along the way in getting it off the ground and ensuring its success. There are a number of people that are detailed in these parts of the story (too many?) but Daniel Burnham, the fair’s main architect, is the most heavily featured. The second (and much more engrossing) story-line follows serial killer H. H. Holmes’s time in Chicago during the fair and how he was able to pull off his crimes. He uses the fair’s status to lure in and later murder a number of people, mostly young women. Its definitely horrifying to read about how he got away with doing this for such a long time without arousing suspicion. Both plots alternate chapters, but I was much more into the Holmes plot than the Fair’s for most of the book. About halfway through, the Fair plot picked up quite a bit, but it was a bit of a slough early on. For most of my time spent reading it, I was ready to give it 3 starts, but ended up giving it a 4 once I made it though. I think this would be a fantastic adaptation (and it will be!…I can totally see Leo playing Holmes) and maybe something I’d enjoy a bit more than the book itself.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Well Met by Jen DeLuca

Well…compared to my previous book, this was almost as big of a downgrade on the intellectual level as you can get…but it was exactly what I needed. Short and sweet! This is the second romance book I’ve read this year (who am I??) and I will say I much preferred this to The Kiss Quotient. This cute little rom-com follows Emily as she moves to the small town of Willow Creek, Maryland to help her older sister rebuild her life after getting into a car accident. While in Willow Creek, she joins her teenage niece, Caitlin, in volunteering for the local Renaissance Faire playing a “tavern wench”. The Faire’s main organizer, Simon, a stuffy and serious English teacher, gets on her nerves immediately, but when he transforms into Captain Blacktorn the Pirate, she starts to feel differently. I loved the whole feel of this book, and it really made me want to go to the PA Renaissance Fair! While I’ve never been in a theater/ren faire type of group, the characters reminded me a lot of the fun people I knew in marching band, and the author was able to capture that sense of community really well. Despite this being a bit of a fluff novel (which is what I wanted/expected), I did really find myself relating a lot to Emily’s character and her past relationship. This is also a lot less racy than The Kiss Quotient for sure haha. If you’re looking for a nice, light palette cleanser between heavier reads, definitely pick this one up!

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang

The Kiss Quotient has been on my to-read list for awhile now. Its on BOTM’s most-loved list, and I’ve pretty much just avoided it because I’m really not into romance. I’ve read one romance book (It Ends with Us by Colleen Hoover) which I did like, but I usually don’t pick them up. Everyone recommends this as a book for those who aren’t into romance (me!) and this was $5 on Amazon (steal!) so I finally read it! Its told from the point of view of 2 main characters; Stella Lane, a beautiful brainy workaholic with autism who has trouble being comfortable with sex and intimacy, and Michael, the male escort Stella hires to help her with her troubles. Although their relationship is purely transactional at first, I think you know where its going lol. It’s actually written by an author with autism so I found that perspective really interesting. While I don’t have autism, I did relate a lot to some of Stella’s perspectives and general social anxiety. Fair warning, though, this book is dirrrrrty. I was like man I hope no one’s looking over my shoulder on the train or anything . Despite the steaminess, it did have substance and a really cute story, albeit a little predictable.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This Tender Land by William Kent Krueger (September BOTM)

This book got rave reviews so I knew it would be my choice for September’s BOTM! This Tender Land follows the story of 4 orphans as they escape an abusive school and try to make their way to St. Louis by way of the river. Along their journey, they encounter a number of obstacles but also make friendships and gain a better understanding of one another and themselves. I really enjoyed this book! Though its a little long, it kept me engaged the whole time and reminded me of something I would have read when I was younger but in a good way. Its well written and has great character development. I will say, there were parts of it that were a little overly “religious” for me personally, but that didn’t take away from my enjoyment of it too much. While some parts of it are a bit unbelievable, I felt better about them as I read through the epilogue at the end which kind of addressed it. All in all, 5 stars from me…highly recommend!

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik

Spinning Silver has been on my to-read list for awhile…everyone seems to really love it! The story is mostly told from the points of view of 3 women; Miryem, a moneylender’s daughter who takes over her father’s business, Wanda, the daughter of a man who owes money to Miryem’s family and is hired as their servant, and Irina, the duke’s daughter who is married to a wealthy and powerful tsar who is harboring a dark secret that could threaten her life. Miryem ends up grabbing the attention of the king of the Staryk, a magical race that is turning all of their lands to perpetual winter. Eventually, the lives of all characters intersect in order to help take down the Staryk and restore Spring. In addition to the 3 main characters, there are 3 other POV characters; Wanda’s brother, Irina’s caretaker, and the tsar. While I enjoyed the story, I felt like the constant change in POV broke up the consistency a bit and I got confused about who was narrating (there aren’t headings for the chapters like many multiple POV books have). For some reason this took me a long time to get through and I wish the plot was a little more engrossing, but I ended up enjoying it much more towards the end when things picked up and I really enjoyed the ending! I think this would make an amazing film or TV adaptation and I’d probably enjoy that more than the book. I did definitely like it though…just didn’t think it was quite as good as others did I guess. That being said, I don’t tend to read a lot of fantasy, so if you’re a fantasy buff this would be one to check out!

My rating: 4 of 5 stars
