In 2011 pregnant bellies are publicly celebrated, accented, and displayed with form fitting fashions. That hasn't always been the style. Let's take a look at a 1944 Hollywood maternity pattern from Midvale Cottage. Look below at the measurements of a size 16! That is not the size 16 of today, is it?

Yes, it IS a maternity dress! I suppose it wasn't good taste to show an actual belly, so the ladies are sporting their pre-pregnancy figures, but the pattern explains how the dress can be let out and worn properly when expecting. Notice the little bunny print on the dress on the top left.

In the pattern below in fripperie's shop, the ladies seem almost disinterested in the little baby booties. Maybe they just don't know what to expect with babies. My Maw-Maw says it just wasn't spoken of and the word "pregnant" was not used.

The fifties seem to relax a little bit and one can at least imagine one's stomach growing underneath these wardrobe pieces. These Simplicity pattern women are so ecstatic to be pregnant as they have no morning sickness at all! The one on the bottom right either doesn't like plaid or is a nervous first time mommy.

Take a look at this great fifties maternity outfit!

Look at the rope trim. This dress still has its original tags and the brand is Expectantly Yours.

Winkeree has this:
It is a popular sixties pattern with a Jackie-O kind of influence. I think my mother had a dress like this when she was pregnant with one of us four girls. I don't think I've seen that many pictures of my mother pregnant AND she would have never posed for the belly shots that are par for the course today. It was just NOT the thing to do at that time!

Yours Lovely has another similar inspired pattern in her shop. The lady on the right is overcome with maternal hormones and hopes since the pattern was marked down from 20 cents to 10 cents, surely someone will give this style a try.

Along came the 1970's and there were still lots of dresses designed to camoflauge the growing tummy with the use of childlike prints or in the case below...pleats.

This dress is in my Etsy Shop. It is very sweet and innocent and roomy. I actually like all three of those attributes in my current wardrobe! lol!

The 1970s mod maternity dress below used the vertical stripes trick to divert attention away from the tummy. Big inverted pleat allows for lots of growing room.

So, there is a little tiny bit of maternity fashion history. As you probably know, it is very different today with stretchy form-fitting attire. I must admit it has taken me some getting accustomed to, although I'm quite use to it at this point.

The picture above is of me, 1981, pregnant and amongst family...I'm the one with the large swollen ankles in my loose maternity jumper that skimmed over the stomach!

I LOVED being blessed with each of my three pregnancies and was very happy to let everybody know I was pregnant. As an expectant mother in the eighties it was still the style to have little smock tops and such. I remember being frustrated the fabric was so little girl-ish, but that's the way it was. I don't remember people touching my stomach, and I didn't have a belly cast made because I never heard of one. I don't think I have any pictures of my naked stomach! I'm not sad about it either. Isn't it funny how things change over the years?

It made me wonder about the story behind it because the creator's name was signed on the back. I have no way to figure out the TRUE story, so I decided to make up my own tale! ****

Back in 1989 Pearl needed a special gift for her friend Viola. Viola was finally remarrying, after 30 years of widowhood, to Herbert, her new neighbor at the Green Acres Independent Living Center. Herbert and Viola had formed a fast friendship over the lovely potted garden Herbert was putting in on the deck of his duplex. Pearl was thrilled for both of them and wanted to make something special for her dear friend Viola.

Pearl carefully sorted through her fabric stash she had accumulated over the years and decided this cheerful print was just the thing for Viola and Herbert's wedding gift. She remembered making some lovely kitchen curtains from this fabric back in 1963. She must think of something really special for Viola's new kitchen.

She covered a round wooden disc (which she had intended to use under her ivy plant) with soft cotton batting, and then carefully folded and stitched her fabric neatly all around.

She added a little chain hanger so all that would have to be done was for Herbert to put a nail in the wall where Viola would choose to hang this special gift.

She decided she would sign the back in pencil.

Pearl turned her finished project over to admire her work and knew that it would be a special gift for her treasured friend. Frustrated, she noticed she missed getting the "Swing Your Partner" all centered on the front. Oh well, Viola would have to understand Pearl's eyesight was not what it once was and it was the thought that counted!

Here's to happy days full of Swinging Your Partner, new beginnings, special friendships, and blessings to Pearl and Viola wherever they may be now!

One of my favorite books, as a girl, was Little Women. Pure sweetness, tragedy, and love were on each and every page. Being the oldest of four girls in the family, I was very familiar with the emotional ups and downs of my own little tribe of "little women."

My Maw-Maw made each of us four girls a rag doll to represent one of the little women. My doll was Meg and I still have her to this day. I also read any Louisa May Alcott book I could get my hands on. I still have a few Alcott books displayed in my home. My sisters and I went to see the movie "Little Women" when the newest version came out some years ago and had a night out on the town with our Mother.

Last week I came upon this book at a garage sale and bought it purely for its beautiful dust jacket. I loved the name of the book and the colors are so pretty.

(I'm participating in Pink Saturday at Beverly's today. Go see lots of links to pink!)

If you judge a book by its cover, this one says...romance, history, intrigue, innocence, dancing, fashion, and genteel conversation. Then, I opened up the book and lo, and a behold...look at the author!

This is one of her books I don't think I ever knew about! I'm excited, except now I will look for the original version as this is the abridged version compiled for children. Some excited young artist decided to begin a masterpiece on the inside of the book by coloring in the illustrations.

Until I track down my mystery Louisa May Alcott book, I listed this dress in my Etsy Shop. It has that same sweet Rose in Bloom sort of feel as the book. Isn't it dreamy? It reminds me of the brand Gunne Sax that was so popular in the 1970's. Oh how I loved those dresses when I was a teen. I don't believe I ever owned one as they were out of my budget!
I can just imagine a teenager asking her mother to buy a beautiful Gunne Sax dress for a special occasion, and a mama looking at the price tag and putting her foot down, "No way honey, I can make that dress and for a lot less money!" This particular dress is made by a very good seamstress that added all sorts of details to make it special.

Hope your Tuesday is full of Roses in Bloom!

It is so sweet and innocent.

I could love sheets in this print.

Or wallpaper.

Or a big overstuffed chair.

This dress is special and not off the rack. I like to imagine a cutesy Mrs. Brady Bunch-type mom purchasing her fabric from Sew-Fro and carefully cutting it out from a Simplicity pattern. With great care she sewed it on her new avocado green Singer sewing machine she received for Christmas.

She was making it for her daughter to wear to be inducted into the National Honor Society. It was a proud moment for her as a mother, as she had always been an average B student in her school days. It was going to be a very special evening indeed!

She put the finishing touches on the dress and proudly presented it to her daughter. Her daughter's face fell and she sobbed, "Oh Mother. I can't wear that! All the other girl's have store bought dresses from Sears!" Daughter then burst into tears and ran from the room. Cutesy-Mrs.-Brady-type-mom sat down in the midst of her pattern pieces and fabric scraps and wept.

Years later Mother and Daughter laughed over this memory. Daughter hugged now-wrinkled-cutesy-Mrs.-Brady-type as they looked at her pictures from the night of The National Honor Society Banquet of 1972. She said, "Oh Mother, everybody else had store bought dresses from Sears and I wore the most beautiful dress in the world!"

Okay...so I get a little carried away with the imagined history of the vintage clothing I purchase.

This is another true-from-my-life story on how two very different people manage to live together and even laugh!

My husband, Bob and I went on a shopping extravaganza to our small town "mall" (Family Dollar) for something really boring like dog food or detergent. I was delighted to discover some charming garden personalities that stole my heart. I just thought they were so cute, and decided I had to have a couple. Then, after rethinking it and being blown away by the adorableness of them, I decided I would purchase the entire six pack of creatures. After all, it was the Family Dollar and these "garden personalities" were not a huge investment. I envisioned the way I could fru-fru them up a bit, maybe paint a few polka-dots, add some glitz, hot glue some ribbon embellishments. The possibilities were endless.

With great excitement I met Bob at the check out counter with three of these precious couples. Bob was not so thrilled with the six pack of garden mice. I thought I would never hear the end of it. I described in detail how I could bejewel the girl mouse's dress with my Marie Osmond Glitz Gun, and add some Martha Stewart glitter to the mister's gnome hat. I assured Bob once I had these rodents "glammed" up a bit I could sell them online, double our money, and he would regret the grief he was dishing out. Bob stubbornly remained blind to the vision I cast. So, as the days went by, I decided to try to win him over. How could anybody resist the faces of these creatures?

I began to sit them in unexpected places at random times...perhaps in his recliner, or by his toothpaste in the morning, and it usually got a laugh.

Then, he began to do the same with me.

It was sort of a silly way to say, "You have been moused! I'm thinking of you and wanted to make you smile."

This past Sunday, Bob brought Mrs. Mouse to church and sat her in a chair for Small Group time! It made me laugh. We got to thinking how much fun we had with this silliness and decided to continue on with our class. We would start "mousing" the members of our Sunday School Class. It is just a little something fun to do in a life that is often full of bills, illnesses, and other stresses.

We have told our friends...at some time in the future...it may be a year from now...when you least expect it....you may get moused! If you get moused, you need to take a quick picture of where you got moused and I will post it. Then, they need to find another member in the class to mouse! They can leave a little note, if they choose, to let them know by whom they were moused. Or it can be an anonymous mousing. This is to let our friends know in Small Group we care about them and wanted to make them smile. (We also said NO breaking and entering as we all want to remain friends!) Eventually, hopefully everybody will be able to say...

I wanted to pass this on to you, as maybe you might want to adapt something like this in your family, workplace, or church. Sometimes life gets so serious, it is good to have a good laugh!

At other times, she would be enjoying her afternoon housewife break with a Hershey bar and a Pepsi. Mother would carefully break off each chocolate square and slowly savor each bite.

I came across an item in a thrift store in Mississippi that brought this memory back to me in a flash.

When I saw the color and style, it transported me back into time when I would be thrilled to discover the Dialing for Dollars 3:30 movie was featuring one of my very favorite ladies. She was beautiful and athletic. She was so very unlike me as she was a graceful mermaid in the water. It was only later I learned what a true swimming world class champion and athlete she was! I was mesmerized by:

Esther Williams! She could flip and flop and dive and swim and instead of coming up with matted hair in her eyes, sputtering and snotty...she looked liked this:

by disneyphilip on Flickr

As Mother sipped her Pepsi, and my sisters and I chomped on our Doritos and hot sauce, the Dialing for Dollars 3:30 movie was surreal delight. How can all not be well with the world, when for an hour and a half the world is one big blue clean swimming pool of flexible, happy beautiful people, whose makeup and hair stays in place as they splash around all day, and they all get married and live happily ever after by five o' clock?

Someone loved the Rose Marie Reid swimsuit and purchased it in my Whimsy Daisy Etsy Shop. It is making its way to Australia from Texas, and I enjoyed the little trip down memory lane it provided me!

Here are some items that have sold lately in my Etsy Shop that apparently tickled the new owner's fancy. I'm always intrigued because you never know when you list something if someone will actually want it enough to BUY it! Just because *I* was intrigued by something doesn't mean anybody else will give a hoot.

These two little dolls looked so forlorn I was worried if anybody would see their charm, but apparently someone remembered them from the past or had a soft spot for this little couple from Japan.

This little lady headvase was snatched up quickly with the new owner requesting me to please "wrap her up real good because she's so pretty!" I have a thing for lady headvases myself but decided I needed to part with this one before I became attached.

This sweet little vintage housedress below is winging its way to Australia and her new owner who has a love of yesteryear's clothing (one of my all time weaknesses.)

Then, there is Peter Pig. He is an old Fisher Price toy from the late 50's early 60's. I bought this pig even though I had no memories of it personally...I loved a Buzzy Bee and still have her! I hoped someone remembered their Peter Pig and would enjoy sitting him on a nursery shelf and reminiscing. His graphics are adorable. I didn't realize how well-loved he had been until I did some research. He's missing his curly-q tail, his hat, his pull string, and he once "oinked"! I was right. Someone saw him and wanted to give him a home. He is on his way from Texas to New Hampshire.

That's what makes Etsy such a fun place to shop and to sell. Now, will my Saucy Walker find a new home?

Or what about this vintage sequined and velvet vest? Will it tickle someone's fancy? Spark a memory? I don't know, but it will be fun to wait and see.

Or maybe it will be Dumbo the Elephant who pulls at the heartstrings...

I'm especially thrilled if someone thinks something I've created it is worthy of attention. I know many of you artsy craftsy folks get the same little thrill when something you make sells. It is that Sally Field moment, "Someone likes me. You really like me!"

Hope you're enjoying this busy time of year and all the crafty fun vintagey goodness in your life. May there be lots of little tickles to your fancy as you recollect sweet moments of the past, make the very most of the present moment, and relish living out your future as God has planned! Happy Pink Saturday! I'm linking up at Beverly's today.

I've been inspired with all the crafting going on in blogland. TESORO FINO had a tutorial on a Vintage Inspired Pantyhose Pumpkin. She did a beautiful job using textured pantyhose to cover a fake pumpkin.

I used her project as a jumping off spot to make some cute pumpkins to give away. I started off with some Michael's pumkins in their 80% off bin. They were less than $2.00 each, and then I spray painted them white. This was totally uneccessary, as I covered them in a cream colored knee-high later on, so it didn't matter what color they were. I wish I had fishnet stocking to go over these. They weren't in my stash.

I put each pumpkin in my Dollar Store knee highs just like you would your foot if it were pumpkin shaped...first a cream colored one...then a black or brown one layered on the top. (By the way, I prefer the contrast of the cream and black.) You are left with the band up around the stem. I selected and glued some trims from the bottom to top, and formed the tops of the knee highs into "rosettes" or shall we call them "pumpkin blossoms"?

I keep my broken jewelry bits and bobs for occassions such as impromptu pumpkin primping. So I added some buttons, bits, bobbles, and brooches here and there.

I tied some mossy green velvet ribbon around the top stem and "pumpkin blossoms" and then added some vintage-look millinery leaves.

I coiled up a broken fake pearl necklace and hot glued it into place on the knee high rosette as its center along with a vintage rhinestone button. A broken earring and a seashell topped it all off.

It was a sweet fun craft which helped me use my accumulated stash. If I had known to save bachelorette knee highs I could have saved two dollars on the two couples I had to buy. So, I'm giving you the heads up...keep an eye out for those single textured knee highs or messed up tights.

I have one more pumpkin to primp and then I will move on to something else fun! I've been listing lots of vintage fun dresses in my Etsy Shop like this adorable June Cleaver Fifties Dress. Hope everyone has a wonderful Lords Day tomorrow. It is my favorite day of the week.

for my tongue-in-cheek post I have entitled:

I Love Vintage Clothes-and if I Were a Size 8 I Would So Wear This

But would I wear a poofy petticoat under my I-Have-Slaved-Over-a-Hot-Stove-All-Day-For-You-Dress? Maybe I would enjoy this sweet little apron below with a floral ruffled detail and matching pockets as I cheerfully scrub my sink with Bon Ami... while flirting with helpful hubby... who is doing all the heavy lifting and admiring the flowery details of my pink apron. That is what he is admiring, isn't he?

But, alas, I just seem to get chubbier and chubbier. Until I get my brain wrapped around the work it will take to rediscover my waist line, I will have to wear the vintage ensembles I can find that fit...or, heaven forbid, I will have to wear regular clothes from this decade.

Then I could wear this rose glamalicious dress to a garden party...if I were to ever get invited to one.

In the meantime, I'll put on a smile, count my blessings....and sincerely try to lay off the Cheetos.
