Isn’t that the most important thing when planning a speech or session? Of course, your speaker’s area of expertise doesn’t change, but the people to whom they’re speaking do.

When you’re scheduling speakers for your next conference, meeting or event, here are some things to tell your speakers:

Audience demographics and professional experience

Audiovisual and room set-up information

How flexible is the room set-up?

Are there opportunities to speak to audience members before the even to learn about their expectations?

Does the audience have experience with new and social technologies, if applicable?

If any organizations have difficult names to pronounce, phonetic spellings can be helpful

Is the audience used to holding Q&A’s at the end of the session, or during it?

Will there be a Twitter feed for the conference?

Will there be a Twitter backchannel used during the sessions?

Give them information on the entire event. Background info is a must.

Some of this information is readily available, and there’s no reason speakers shouldn’t have access to it.

Happy Friday to all the Splash blog readers! Here in Atlanta it’s such a gorgeous day that we’ve been counting down to the weekend all day long.

But, it’s Friday and before we head out to enjoy the weekend, we’ve got to share five of our favorite blog posts from around the association community this past week. Feel free to share your own in the comments!

1. We tweeted this one earlier today but the message is so great we wanted to share it again: Resisting resistance is futile. Jeffrey Cufaude shares a number of reasons why people resist facilitation – including the purpose, the process and the people – and how you can deal with resistance when it occurs. How has your small staff association handled resistance?

2. Shelly Alcorn asks, who should be setting those standards for those companies in your industry or profession who want to be benefit corporations?. Her answer? You. Setting standards for those companies is part of the association’s role to advocate for its members.

3. “There are no bad ideas.” It’s a common phrase during brainstorming sessions for many associations. However, David M. Patt argues the opposite: there are bad ideas, but they may be OK. Brainstorming’s purpose, after all, is to gather a lot of ideas. Not every idea will be implemented, and, David writes, a better introduction to brainstorms would be, “all ideas are welcome.”‘

4. At the SocialFish blog, John Haydon shares seven ways to increase engagement on your association’s Facebook page. One of our favorites? Interject virality. Ask fans to share a post if they agree, or like a post if they agree. Sharing automatically makes status updates and photos viral, which is a great way to boost engagement. Be sure to check out the comments here too.

5. Aaron Wolowiec shares how to avoid the absolute trap of the word never. He asserts that many people stand in the way of their own success because of the barriers we put up around us. Aaron asks how often you or your association uses the word “never,” and if it holds you back from reaching your full potential.

From all of us at MemberClicks, have a great weekend!
