I love to make custom orders! During last times I met on the web some amazing crafters and bloggers, who committed me some little customized works such as stamps or draws for them. Here's I'd like to thank them, and to show you these last creations of mine, introducing you also these amazing people who contacted me for their little hand crafter works...

The first is Coral, from Saint Louis Obispo - California, also called "SLO", to which wikipedia refers also as "the happiest city in America". And I believe that wikipedia this time should not be far from accounting the true, seeing the wonderful world that Coral is able to describe in her gorgeous blog, rich in inspirations and cute pictures. Recently, she asked to prepare a couple of portraits to be added on her blog that feature her in company of the Pascal, her inseparable softy bunny, in both a winter and a spring versions...

... then, I'm glad to introduce here also Charlotte, a Parisian talented dress maker, who ordered me a stamp with her logo, to be used for signing her collections. Recently, she was also featured on the French Etsy blog, in which she released an inspiring interview with amazing photos showing her dreamy works; you can take a look also to her blog here...

And last but not least, I happy here to talk again about Rosario, aka Donamaria. Rosario handcrafts amazing wools and I find that really gorgeous. She firstly asked me to turn a draw of her daughter into a stamp. Then I made also for her the logo of her boutique. Some time ago, I discovered that she uses these stamps to decorate her wooden spools and to embellish little cotton pouches that she uses for her wools. I find this idea really creative, able to well describe the potential of hand carved stamps: to have fun, to embellish things, and to make even more special our unique objects. Thank you Rosario for sharing these cuties!

A great week-end in Paris

Week-end in Paris for me means to gather stuff in flea markets. This town offers a lot of knick-knack expositions. The most famous are marchés aux puces, which are located in Saint-Ouen (at the Porte de Clignancourt), in Porte de Vanves, and in Montreuil. These markets are stable ones and they are opened each week-end, sometimes also during monday, and they are really little towns filled with old stuffs. Yet aside these well-established flea markets, usually each week-end some ephemeral exchanges are organized in the streets: they are either brocantes or vide greniers. A brocante, word that could be translated with "second-hand good", is an occasional market in which sellers sold in the street antiquities and other old things. Vide greniers (literally "clean out attics") are even more informal, and people simply brings their old and no more wanted things for selling them down in the street. While brocantes are usually more chic, in vide-greniers you can find really great deals (or huge rip-offs.... bien sur!)

During my last gathering activity, I stumbled upon an amazing brocante in Village Saint-Paul - an ancient inner court in the Marais district - and amongst wonderful old stuffs, I found my little happiness. Indeed, I've found a tiny owl in ceramic (first photo in head) and a spectacular typo drawer in wood, which can contain with ease not only the tiny owl but also all other little stuffs already gathered around! In my opinion, it is simply wonderful, and it fit very well with the ambience of my little attic...

And my old-new tiny owl inspired me to such extent that it became my mascot and I turned it in a felt brooch and in a rubber stamp... you can see the outcome here below... both the brooch and the stamp are on my etsy!

Llama, my spitting avenger!

Big city life seems often to a jungle. Not in the sense of a virgin tropical jungle, fulfilled with green trees, funny animals and relaxing chirps of tropicals birds as in Kipling's books... I am talking of that kind of cement jungle in which people forget their kindness, use compulsively horn at any time, and wrestle for each cm on sidewalks without caring about others... Sometimes, I would like to have a llama and come out for a walk with it on leash as a dog... it would be my shaggy avenger spitting in the face of all bully ones crossing my path!

As I think it would be rather unrealistic to adopt this unerring animal as my personal pet, I wanted to dedicate a rubber stamp to it, with which I've spent some funny times marking my stuff and producing a pencil case. Both the stamp and the pencil case are available on my etsy... I hope you like them!!

Some time ago, I purchased an amazing necklace, created by Tinee Häcker. I really love it so much and I always wear it because I find that its style and its design are unique and genial! Thanks to Tinee, I discovered the existence of "shrink plastic" a magic material that allow to create bijoux in plastic with a lot of fun using stamps to decorate them! So, I wanted to try to use me too this material creating a new stamp with which I have decorated the pendant. This lovely hug between two koalas is dedicated to all lovers, as far as today is Valentine's!!

My dear robot

When I was child, one of my dream was to have a robot all for me. I longed indeed for having a robot able to do whatever I disliked to do, such as, for instance, to tidy up my room, do my homework, to listen to mum while giving me a lecture, and even to eat vegetables... a kind of little unaware slave, willing to kindly help me in every occasion.

Hopefully, I put aside this slave attitude growing up; yet I've kept a geek vocation linked to robots. I am convinced that robots are one of representation of what I love in human being: that's the Promethean attitude to create through ingeniousness devices with which to overcome physical limits. As in the funny cartoon here above, "Bimbo in the robot", in which the weedy Bimbo is able, thanks to its personal robot, to lick the enormous and unfair Mike for the hand of his beloved! This funny story came from the ingeniousness of the mythic Max Fleischer, the father of Popeye, Betty Boop, and, off course, of Bimbo.

Thus, while I was remembering during these last days to this childish desire of mine, I took decision to carve a special stamp set dedicated to this little mechanical friend; some fabric hand stamped using this set became afterward a geekery pencil case... I hope you like them, they are on my etsy!

In this continuous discovery of utmost creative entities on the web, to which I'm dedicating a special issue of this blog, it was impossible for me to not assign a special place to Eva, aka Misako Mimoko. Eva is an illustrator, a crafter, a dreamer based in wonderful Barcelona, in Spain. Her creations are simply extraordinary: take a look to her website or to her etsy shop for having an idea of her unique style!

Amongst her creations, Eva has made a wide range of unique characters, thus materialized in the shape of funny dolls! These dolls are entirely hand made with soft and warm fabrics, and they are able to evoke in me the same uniqueness that belongs to "d'antan" dolls, because of the care and of the meticulousness that Eva put in these creations. Since I discovered her on etsy some time ago, I was really fascinated by these imaginative dolls, which she called dolis (the little ladies) and dolos (the baby boyz). For instance, doli winter tree & dolo monsieur tranchette (here above), and doli little house & doli red apple (below).

Yet my favorite doli is this cute candy, which I saw some times ago on her etsy. I love it to such extent that I made an hand carved rubber doli-stamp directly inspired to her sweetness!!

timeless vintage brands #7 Haribo

After having showed the amazing world of handcrafted candies, here I'd like stay on the line to this sugary world... Indeed I'm glad to dedicate this 7th issue of timeless vintage logos to HARIBO, maybe the standing confectionery producer over the world. Gummy bears, cola twist, liquorice wheels, starmix etc... this hall of fame of candies belongs to Haribo! I'm sure that everyone of you was, at least for a short time in her or his life, a sound addicted of one of these gummy delicious sweeties!

This brand was born almost a century ago: HAns RIegel of BOnn, HA-RI-BO, created its firm of candies in Germany in 1920. As soon as in 1922 the first "tanzbär" (litterally "dancing bear") was created: it was the ancestor of the actual "Gold-Bear", a cult candy for children and grown-up ones! In a certain way, these candies were one of first attempts of popular mass candies: in a period of economic and social crisis, such as the post WWI Germany, these funny bears represented an inexpensive drop of happiness!

Yet the most funny aspect that I experienced is the Haribo is the most French of German firms. My apologized for the game with words, but the rivalry between French and German people is notorious; in spite of that, Haribo is the leading producers of bonbons in France! Since 1967, when Haribo took over some French producers, it started also a production of a "vedette" candy, that was shortly assimilated as a French flagship: the Fraise Tagada, a guimauve with the flavor of strawberry coated with red sugar. Tagadas are as ingrained in French culture to such extend that it was calculated that one of them is eaten every second here! I guess that Tagadas are sold in other countries under the name of Primavera (Italy and Germany for instance) or Strawbs (UK and US). If you find them in your country, try them!

Welcome 2012! The year of the Dragon!!

Since 23rd January, Paris is in turmoil for the beginning of festivities linked to the new Chinese year! Yes because here in Paris there is a big Chinese community, who lives in three "Chinatowns": one around the 13 arrondissement in the south part of the town, one in the norther part of the Marais district, and another one in the core of Belleville. Each of these communities organize each years a series of parties, of expositions, and of cultural activities in order to celebrate the arrival of the new year. And most important, they perform also the traditional "Dragon parade", a real Chinese show that "floods" the Parisian streets. You can find the full program of these festivities here.

2012 is for the chinese culture the year of the Dragon: this mythological animal is for Chinese people the symbol of power, harmony, health, and, most important, of luck. Indeed, Dragon years are considered the luckiest in the Chinese lunar zodiac... and as fas as Dragon is such as a good omen, I have produced a hand carved rubber stamp with the shapes of a little cute Dragon to celebrate this year, which I hope it would really lucky!

Since the beginning of year is usually a time during which to believe in good omens, I have also carved a stamp set representing a Daruma (or Dharma) Doll. This is a Japanese doll that is traditionally believed a talisman of good luck. This doll is made without eyes; when you express a wish, you have to color only one eye: the doll will help you to realize it for having its missing eyes. Indeed, if the wish will realize, you have to thank the doll making the other one. Otherwise, these dolls can represent also a symbol of perseverance: drawing a eye when you settle a goal will help you to stay concentrate on this goal until when it will be fulfilled - and you will draw the other eye to show your achievement. Treasures of Paris #7. Le Bonbon au Palais

"La vie est bien plus belle avec des bonbons..." (life is even more beautiful with some candies); this is the message that welcomes people when crossing the threshold of Le Bonbon au Palais, a unique candy shop that I'm glad to feature here for my series of posts about places to be definitively visited in Paris. This shop is really a sweet pearl for its cuteness! Not only for the unbelievable varieties of delicious candies that you can find only there: this shop is really amazing for its ambience, with furnishings able to recall a vintage classroom with black dashboard, wooden desk and faded maps on walls... to spend some time in this shop is like a colorful journey back to a dreamy period of our childhood!

The person who made possible this project is George, a brilliant guy who succeeded in realizing his own biggest dream since his childhood: to open the most beautiful candy shop of the world, proposing the best selection of sweets that you can find! And, looking at what he was able to put together, I can affirm with ease that he achieved his goal: in this shop you can find bonbons from all corners of France, a selection of more than 200 varieties of regional candies hand made by the best French "confiseurs"...

... each of them has its own story and its own particular taste: it is a pleasure to listen George accounting while describing their flavors with the typical enthusiasm of who has a real passion for his own job. Indeed he has chosen each of the candies present in the shop, serving as a real hunter of sugary treasuries. Amongst the huge varieties of sweeties, here you can also find the real "guimauve". For profanes this could be described as a kind of marshmallow; yet its soft taste evokes a dreamy sensation of flowers and meringues.

The month of sweetness

January is for me the month of sweetness. Xmas holidays are just gone, and my house is still stuffed with candies and sweeties of all kinds... I'm aware that it will be needed a certain time for buffering all them; for that, during this month my blog will host and show creations inspired directly to the wonderful world of cakes and candies. After having presented you the galette des rois, this is the time of this candy necklace above, I hope you like it, it would be found on my etsy...

Yet, as you maybe have the sorrow to try it, sweeties are sworn enemies of little teeth (and maybe best friend of dentists...). For never forgetting this cons of candies, I've also produced a safety pin with a tooth along with paste and brush (pic here above) and a tooth hand carved rubber stamp (pic here below). Your daily drop of sweetness

As usual, when a new year begins, people wonder how did the last year turn out and very often write more or less exhaustive lists of resolutions for the new one. And I am ready to bet that many of you, still stricken by guilt-feelings about having eaten too much during xmas meals, placed at the beginnings of these lists sentences such as "eat less", "go on a diet", "enroll at the gym" and so forth. I can also foresee that in many cases our beloved candies have been found guilty of ever-normal augmentations of weight and that special resolutions could claim "definitively stop candies", "never eat candies again", and even more drastically "start your personal war to candies".

Personally, I never trust in new year's resolutions list (even though I write it every years!). I feel that life is more than a firm balance sheet, in which one year losses have to compensated in the hope of future earnings. Even to consider the life divided in years is too much conventional after me. Life should be lived day after day, following our tastes and our wills, and each morning we should feel the whole opportunity to start a new day, to achieve our projects, and to follow our dreams. But I can understand a diet could be really welcome after binges of last days. For that, instead of writing "kill all candies without eating!" in my list, this year I can use this stamp "candy machine" for my daily drop of sweetness. I am sure that this will be at zero cals! Studios mag!!

My little and warm studio is going to become a real celebrity: after having been featured on etsy last year in a special issue dedicated to workspaces, this winter it was included in a real paper publication, which you can find both in North American kiosks and on-line... I'm so excited about it! I'm glad and proud indeed to announce that "Studios", a great magazine that features artists' spaces, has chosen to include my little attic under the roof of Paris in this last issue!! All-Mighty: Boston Terrier lovers

Christmas is approaching very fast, and for whom that have still to find the last gifts for their beloved ones, I'd like to suggest to take a look to one of my favorite shops, which has recently launched a new amazing collection of wears and accessories... it is All-Mighty, a concept store build around a funny Boston Terrier (whose name is Mighty), the best friend of Erica and Jennifer Daking, two adorable sisters from Los Angeles. In 2007 they started a really nice activity of t-shirt and apparels producers focused directly on Mighty and on their love for Boston Terriers...

...When most people come in contact with a Boston Terrier they see a small, chortling, and often excitable little dog; for many of us the experience could best be described as cute, but when Erica Daking stares into the big brown eyes of her beloved dog, the connection is nothing short of inspirational. Mighty, Daking’s 5 year old Boston terrier, is not only her precious pet and best friend but also the muse from which she draws a majority of her inspiration for her t-shirt line- All Mighty. Daking’s designs are as adorable as the pup that inspires them!!

And, that's true, Boston Terriers are insomuch cute that I've experienced of this inspiration and hand carved the logo of All-Mighty... with which I hope Erica and Jennifer could decorate packets and cards they send over the world for diffusing their love for Boston Terriers!

The perfect gift

Since I've seen this melting video below, I think there's no better way to expose what is, for me, the concept of "perfect gift". While people are often carried away by the stress of the scramble for last minute Xmas gifts, I think on the contrary that what gives sense to the act of donating is the time we spent for our beloved and scrupulousness we dedicate to take care of their presents. What make unique a gift is the time we spent for seeking the right item, which represents the tastes and wills of our beloved; for writing a good greeting card, able to keep up with the sentiments we'd like to expose; for wrapping and presenting it in the more original way, showing how much we care about. Thus, the perfect gift is the one you can't wait to give... because to give a gift should be somewhat able to gratify also ourself, not a mechanic task, or an mandatory action to be accomplished. For that, I feel as the child of this video: while I'm wrapping what I thing is my perfect gift for someone, I experience the his impatience growing in me, I feel the sensation of this great expectation to see a smile appears on the mouth of my beloved.

For this Christmas, I am already looking for the right items and I'm still enhancing my writing capabilities to be used in greeting cards; yet the main decision I've taken is to wrap my gifts with home-made wrappings and to use handmade decorations for them. And here's indeed a special kit I've produced for your special Xmas pacs: four buttons made with modeling clay representing sweet gingerbread men, with which to embellish strings and bows of the pack, and a special stamp made with 6 different motives for printing out a unique pattern on your wrapping paper. After pacman and invaders rubber stamp sets, I'm glad to show you new hand made geekery stuff!! I've indeed produced during last periods some felt brooches inspired to one of my favorite 1980s video games: pacman! They're a must for all of you that want to show to the world their love for vintage games; check them out on my etsy...

Moreover, keeping this geek attitude on, I've also conceived other stuffs inspired to vintage video games. Using some plaster, I made both pac man and space invaders magnets to be attached, for instance, on the fridge door. Also these vintage technological creations are available on my etsy, I hope you like them!!

Along with these felt ornaments, I am also glad to announce a new tutorial in my etsy. All these Xmas ornaments, indeed, became the object of new ebook that illustrates how to hand-made them. timeless vintage brands #6 Snuggle

Today for me was the "washing day". Indeed, I've not any washer at home, and, usually, I need to spend whole afternoons in the coin-operated laundry on the doorstep for doing the washing. But today, my time was not totally wasted. As soon as I crossed the laundry's threshold this afternoon, I've promptly recognized something a new but familiar at the same time: the soap dispenser was re-settled to sale a new kind of softener and its panel has been covered with a huge sticker of "cajoline". Cajoline is the French name for "snuggle", in Italy we call it "coccolino"... and it remembered me too much my childhood! Shortly, a new argument for my special issue dedicated to vintage timeless brands was dropped in my mind! Indeed, as soon as I finished to dry my scented clothes, I hand-carved the logo of snuggle, making a special stamp that you can see in the pics of this post; I hope you like it!

Watching again today the old commercials of snuggle from 1980s (a lot of them are available here - in French), I remembered all the efforts made by my grandma to please my desire to have this cute character of the TV. During my childhood, indeed, in Italy (but I guess also in other countries) it was possible to win the teddy-bear accumulating points. A lot of points. I think that at the end my grandma obtained the bear only thanks to a friend of her, who has a little stock of promotional teddy-bear because she was the owner of a grocery... But, this was not exactly a happy end: indeed the toy revealed to not be at all the cute and softy teddy-bear of the adversing. It seemed more to an evil woo-do doll, very rigid and mangy. I think that, fearing it could become alive, I enclosed it into a drawer, without even considering the possibility to play or sleep with it. I read that still today an accumulation of point exists for having the little bear... and in the pic it seems really cute; what should I do, to try again my chance to obtain this white teddy-bear?

My favorite illustrators # 6 Roger Hargreaves

Amongst my favorite illustrators, Roger Hargreaves merits a special place; it was impossible for me to not include him in this corner of my blog. Roger does not need any presentation: Mr. Men and Miss Little are maybe one of most popular characters of children books; since 1971, when these characters were created, dozens of millions of copies of Mr. Men booklets were sold. All kind of gadgets of these characters were also created: from t-shirts, to plasters, from mugs, to jewelries... Recently, even google dedicated its first page to this author with a special doodle inspired to his characters. And to tribute them and their creator, I took decision to carve some stamps inspired to Mr. Men and Miss Little, I hope you like them very much!!

What is less know, at least to me before taking decision to write this post, is how Roger started to create these funny creatures: according with wikipedia, one day in 1971 his young son asked to him "what does a tickle look like?" The answer to this question was an odd orange ball, with a hat upon its head, and long and trembling arms: Mr. Tickle was born. During following years, a little funny army of colorful characters was created from this first inspiration. What I like the most of Roger Hargreaves is, aside the cuteness of his creations and the hilarity that they excite in me, the fact that he was able to represent through his series of Mr. Men and Miss Little, the widespread features of human being. Likewise to a contemporary Balzac, Hargreaves was able to draw all characters of a modern "Comédie Humaine". So said, which character looks more like you? I'm sure that, if you check the image below, you will find the most similar to you!

Treasures of Paris #6. Les Marionnettes du Marais

For this new issue of my special places to visit in Paris, it is a great pleasure to introduce Les Marionnettes du Marais! A couple of days ago, I received this amazing finger puppet (pic above) as a gift, and since then I've fallen in love with this funny monkey; it is as little as it could be held in my pocket! This cute puppet comes from Roxana Pecquet's shop, a little pearl of hand-knitted creations in the heart of the Marais district in Paris, just beyond the Musée Carnavalet... The handmade activity of Roxana is really amazing. Her boutique is unbelievably fulfilled with hundreds of colorful puppets: princes and princess, wolves and red ridding hoods, witches and fairies, Roxana proposes a wide range of characters since 17 years ago, when she started her activity here in Paris. From the characters of classic tales to almost all the animal existing in nature, these cuties stimulate your imagination and let you perform great theatrical shows, able to satisfy even the most exigent child simply thanks to the waving your fingers!!

Therefore, I find that these fingers puppets are not only very cute; they has also a big advantage. Their reduced size makes them suitable for typical small parisian apartments: in few square meters, by their help it will be possible to organise real theatrical "colossal", with dozens of characters and walker-ons; the only limit, this time, will be the number of hands you will dispose!
