For example, Raga Hindol, assigned to Kalyan thāt, uses the notes S G M D N, which are also found in Marwa thāt. Raga Jaijaivanti contains both shuddha nishad and komal nishad (and sometimes both versions of gandhar as well), which by definition corresponds to no thāt. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="text-align: justify;"&gt;The basic format of the tihai is 3 equal repetitions of a rhythmic or melodic pattern, usually interspersed with 2 equal rests, calculated to fall on a significant point in the tala most often the som or first beat. The other most common ending point of a tihai is the beginning of the gat or bandish often several beats before the sam.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="text-align: justify;"&gt;Typically a tihai is used as a rhythmic cadence that marks the end of a melody or rhythmic composition creating a transition to another section of the music. Tihais can be played and sung by every instrument in Indian music.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="text-align: justify;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="text-align: justify;"&gt;If the phrase is sixteen beats long, the outline of a tihai might look like: 4 2 4 2 4. Each "4" represents a pattern that is four beats long and each "2" represents a rest that is two beats long (4+2+4+2+4=16). The start of the next phrase is exactly on the downbeat. Another example is a 2 5 2 5 2 in a sixteen beat phrase. Two beats of rhythm with five beats of rest between.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="text-align: justify;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="text-align: justify;"&gt;In a 10 beat taal, such as Jhaptaal, the tihai may be structured as 6 1 6 1 6 1 ( this last beat falling on the sam).&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="text-align: justify;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="text-align: justify;"&gt;More complicated patterns may be formulated. For example, for the 16 beat teentaal, a tihai of tihais may be formed. This is known as the Chakradhar tihai, a composition of tihais. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="text-align: justify;"&gt;If the 3 groupings are played with 2 groupings of rests, which are equally long, then the tihai is called 'dumdaar', otherwise, if there are no rests between the 3 groupings, then the tihai is called 'bedumdaar' or simply 'bedum'.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="text-align: justify;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="text-align: justify;"&gt;Sometimes, patterns are played on the tabla that are almost identical to a tihai except for the fact that it ends on the beat just before the sam. Such patterns are known as 'anagat'.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="text-align: justify;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

E citou a Freitas Bastos e a Civilização Brasileira. A Freitas Bastos ficava no andar térreo do Liceu de Artes e Ofícios, no prédio que foi abaixo para dar lugar à atual sede da Caixa Econômica Federal. O local era privilegiado — esquina da Rua Bittencourt da Silva com Largo da Carioca. No primeiro andar desse prédio, ficavam a redação e a oficina d'O Globo. Ali, Callado começou a sua vida de jornal, ao lado de Nelson Rodrigues e do hoje editor Alfredo Machado, antes de passar ao "Correio da Manhã" e de ir para a Inglaterra trabalhar na BBC durante a guerra.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; text-align: justify;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 12pt;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
A referência à Freitas Bastos presumo que esteja ligada, na reminiscência de Callado, a essa antiga sede d'O Globo. por onde passei vários anos depois. Quanto à Civilização Brasileira. está associada à editora do mesmo nome e, claro, ao nosso amigo Enio Silveira, o bravo intelectual que desde cedo se projetou como editor e livreiro. Como editor de Callado, Ênio lançou a 1ª edição de "Quarup". Como autor, também eu passei pela Civilização. com uma novela que foi incluída no livro dos Sete Pecados Capitais. Enio teve a idéia e me incumbiu do pecado da avareza.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; text-align: justify;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 12pt;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
Com uma ponta de nostalgia, Antônio Callado devia estar pensando num tipo de livraria que já não existe hoje no Rio — grande estabelecimento em que era possível encontrar de tudo. Tudo aqui tanto se refere a livro como a gente. Ou pelo menos certa classe de gente chegada a livros: o professor e o aluno, o romancista consagrado e o poeta inédito, o erudito em busca de uma raridade bibliográfica e o curioso atrás de uma novidade. Essas livrarias dos anos 40 e 50 ainda conservavam uma atmosfera da remota tradição do salão literário. Não era apenas uma loja para vender livros. Eram também um ponto de encontro para o bate-papo, a troca de idéias e de fuxicos.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; text-align: justify;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 12pt;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
Não sei se há uma história das livrarias do Rio. Sei, porém, que ela anda dispersa em muitos livros de memórias, em biografias e em crônicas da cidade. A livraria faz parte da vida cultural de uma nação. No caso do Rio, que ainda se ousa chamar de capital cultural do Brasil, as livrarias têm uma história inseparável da própria história de nossas letras. Para não ir muito longe e ficar num exemplo notório, bastaria evocar Machado de Assis na Livraria Garnier. Era lá, na Rua do Ouvidor, que à tarde ele se tornava visível, cercada pelos velhos amigos e pelos novos admiradores. Na mesma rua, anos mais tarde. na Livraria José Olympio, Graciliano Ramos assinava o ponto todo santo dia, num grupo a que pertencia também José Lins do Rego.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; text-align: justify;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 12pt;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
A propósito da entrevista de Antônio Callado, andei me lembrando das livrarias de antigamente &lt;personname productid="em Belo Horizonte. Mera" w:st="on"&gt;em Belo Horizonte. Mera&lt;/personname&gt; coincidência, leio num jornal de Minas a noticia da morte de Oscar Nicolai. Tinha 78 anos. Nasceu &lt;personname productid="em Buenos Aires" w:st="on"&gt;em Buenos Aires&lt;/personname&gt; e aos oito meses foi para Porto Alegre. Em 1930, instalou-se &lt;personname productid="em Belo Horizonte" w:st="on"&gt;em Belo Horizonte&lt;/personname&gt;, como representante da Editora Globo. Estabeleceu-se primeiro na Av. Paraná. Comprou depois um bar na Av. Afonso Pena e ali conheceu o esplendor e a glória, com a livraria situada no endereço comercial mais caro da cidade. Era impossível importar livros da Europa, sobretudo da França, por causa da guerra. Com um espaço de catedral, a Livraria Nicolai tinha tudo que editava no Brasil e abriu um horizonte para a América Latina, em particular para Argentina, Chile e México.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; text-align: justify;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 12pt;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
Mais do que isso, porém, o que o Nicolai nos abriu foi um crédito baseado mais em nossa fome de leitura do que em nossa capacidade financeira. Fora o felizardo do Sábato Magaldi, que tinha o respaldo paterno, todos nós atolávamos &lt;personname productid="em dívidas. Bom" w:st="on"&gt;em dívidas. Bom&lt;/personname&gt; psicólogo, ou excelente vendedor, o Nicolai deixava que levássemos os livros para casa, a titulo de experiência, com direito a devolução. Claro que ninguém conseguia devolver nada e tinha que cair com o dinheiro, mesmo a prestação. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; text-align: justify;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 12pt;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
Quando submarinos nazistas afundaram navios brasileiros, a Livraria Alemã foi saqueada e incendiada. Foi um ato digno de Hitler. A família Bluhm mudou-se para o Rio. O Nicolai prosperou e cresceu. A livraria era espaçosa e acolhedora, onde encontrávamos os livros, nossos amigos, e os nossos amigos, amigos dos livros. Com o sistema de crédito pioneiro e cordial, Oscar Nicolai estimulou o vicio impune da leitura e contribuiu para a nossa definitiva dependência desse objeto de consumo, todavia sagrado, que é o livro.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
