Odds & Ends?

This will probably be my last blog post in a long time. I know I said this site will be suspended until further notice since I was lazy to maintain 2 websites simultaneously. Since then, and after a couple more posts, my motivation to blog died down and here I am posting a short farewell after a 3 year break.

Let's see, I just imported all my blog posts from limhanwei89.multiply.com because I was told Multiply is closing down its social networking services. For old times sake, I decided to just keep these preserved somewhere on the world wide web. I was childish and naive back then, and probably still immature I guess but hopefully some time in the future, I'll suddenly remember about this site and read back some of my foolishness, have a little giggle and reminisce about old times.

As I progress in this game called 'LIFE', I'm about to enter a new phase which is graduation from University. After that, who knows where will my work bring me? Hopefully things will go according to plan, and I'll be a 'Dr' in 2013 July. Its been a long 5 years of medical school, hopefully the sweat and tears poured into this will be worthwhile down the line.

If you know me personally, feel free to add me on Facebook. In fact, that is probably where I'm most active at the moment. My contact information is also listed there as well. Till then, the struggle to continue with life goes on and I'll be looking forward to better things in the near future.

P.S. Oh and the Mayans lied. I'm still alive, and you're still alive to read this post. So much for 21/12/12 being the end of the world :)

Its been awhile since I last watched a movie with friends. Well almost everyone else is done with their exams except for the medical students, including me. There's like exactly 1 month left before my first paper and mates are already packing up to go back home (Malaysia), this is just so depressing zzz.

Just watched both Evangelion 1.11 You Are (Not) Alone and Evangelion 2.22 You Can (Not) Advance, both in awesome Blue-ray quality. Man that was a blast, 4 hours of pure awesome-ness. The series has gone a long way since the 1995 release of Neon Genesis Evangelion. And I gotta say the movie does a superb job at reviving this old series. Not only are the animations top notch, so are the flow of plot and soundtracks too. At least you don't have to deal with the emo-ness of the protagonists so much in the movies as opposed to the series.

Evangelion 1.11 You Are (Not) Alone

Last year I had the privilege to watch Evangelion 1.11 at Cineleisuire. Gotta say the proper cinema experience is just too good. Unfortunately, Malaysia didn't bring in Evangelion 2.22 this year, and even if they did, I'm still here in UK too. Guess I'll settle with a home theatre system instead when I go back. Evangelion 2.22 definitely needs to be watched on a big screen with proper sound systems, the battle scenes are just too good and can't be appreciated on multimedia PC speakers. And the introduction of new plot material, and a new character just makes the movies worth watching even more.

I won't spoil anything more about the movie contents but this is definitely a must watch for any anime fan, not only for its appeal to old-school anime lovers, but also the influence it had over all the anime productions succeeding it.

Here's post #2 in my X1 picture series, which basically a series of blog posts based around pictures found in my Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 mobile phone.

This time its one of the parcels I received from Amazon way back in February 12 2009. Yeah its long overdue but I guess I should still post about it anyway.

Its finally here

What's that? Its a Hori Fighting Stick 3 for the PS3. Bought it to use on my PC though cos I don't own a PS3. I was pretty fond of fighting games since young but never really got past the scrub stage. Classics like Street Fighter and King of Fighters were fun to mash back then, when I still struggle to execute special moves or combos.

Melty Blood was the first fighter that really got me into serious mode, where I actually spent time to learn the game. From the fundamental basics to advanced combos and mixups, its been a fun journey since 2007. At that time, I was just a keyboard warrior and didn't bother much about using other input methods like a pad or arcade stick to improve my performance. I'm not saying keyboard is limiting for this genre (fighting games) but certain moves are close to impossible if not impractical to perform in the midst of a match. (a 720 grab by Zangief in Street Fighter, or pressing more than 3 buttons at the same time for a certain action etc)

Melty Blood Actress Again for the PS2

Netplaying friends in Melty Blood back home in Singapore and Malaysia was great fun, and I also messed around in other fighters like Guilty Gear too. But I never took that game seriously and just learned how to enjoy it. And yeah, I used the keyboard too for that. Even when I came to study here in the UK, I still played Melty Blood online, and even became part of the European community here. Made great friends all over Europe and met a few of them at a recent gathering.

Fast forward to 2009, I decided to invest in an arcade stick, not just to improve my performance, but also have a better gaming experience. And since then, I've never looked back. The true arcade experience is indeed much more enjoyable and what can beat using a joystick and mashing buttons in true arcade fashion. Fighting games were made for the arcade in the first place, and of course its best played with an arcade stick.

Hori Fighting Stick 3

I'm not gonna lie. It was indeed tough at the beginning when I started using this stick. I was at my prime in terms of execution for any game using the keyboard at that time, with a pad coming in second. Its pretty frustrating to suddenly become unable to do what you used to be able to do so well. Its like I lost all my skills gained from months of practice in just a day. But perseverance and determination made me carry on, and now I'm pretty much able to do anything I want with the arcade stick. Initially I even played other genres like puzzles and shooters just to improve my execution on stick, glad all of those hard work paid off in the end.

If you are looking for a in-depth review for this arcade stick, just google the name. Personally, I think its a great entry level stick, and Hori is a well known maker of arcade sticks in the industry so its quality guaranteed. Anyway, nowadays the only fighting games I play are MBAA and BBCS. Considering in investing in a PS3/360 for BBCS netplay next year, depending on how tight my schedule is and most importantly, the internet connection in my accommodation.

I realized I pretty much went out of topic, but then 2 pictures of an arcade stick just isn't enough to write a post with any content lol. So, if you read through all of that, here's a cookie for you. In the mean time, back to revisions. 1 month and a week to go before finals.

Mirai Nikki is awesome

Just because I'm bored, and can't be arsed to do what I'm supposed to be doing, I'm scrolling through my handphone pictures and picking interesting ones at random to post.

I'll try running a new series of blog posts known as X1 #, just so I have a constant topic to post. The term X1 is a namesake of my current handphone, which is the Sony Ericsson Xperia X1, which has a 3.2 Megapixel camera. Not the best out there, but good enough for me I suppose.

Its been months since I last updated the site. Its not that nothing has happened, but I'm just too packed with stuff going on and sometimes you just lack the motivation to write anything at all.

Been staying up all week just to finish up this Special Study Module on bipolar depression. Glad that I got this 3000 word report done within the 4 weeks period, with an extra week to spare. Explains why I'm in the mood to actually update this blog.

On a side note, the original intention was to show the picture of something I stumbled upon while browsing the local 2nd hand store. Was quite a surprise really to see that thing and the picture above relates to it largely lol.

Yup. Its a Yamaha DGX-220 Keyboard

Its been more than a year since I last touched my Yamaha DGX-220, or any piano/keyboard related instrument for that matter. I missed the days of A levels where I would search for the scores of my favourite tunes to play on my keyboard. Back then, stuff was so easy that I had time for games, music, and even anime. Now its like I have to sacrifice some things just for the sake of another. Pretty much toned down on gaming a lot and not even playing any single instrument. Studies and anime pretty much occupies a large portion of my daily schedule nowadays. And Medicine pretty much sucks away your life at a slow pace haha. Soon I'm gonna be some sad no-life if I don't pass the year.

The picture above was pretty much taken in December last year before Christmas. Had to scan through my library of cellphone pictures to find it. Some day I'll sit down and go through the pictures, and slowly post about them. That includes pictures in my previous O2 XDA II Mini as well, which dates back to secondary school days heh.

What prompted me to write this post was basically nostalgia upon listening to the song Koibumi (恋文) being played on my streaming radio. And it reminded of my keyboard, as well as days back in A levels I suppose.

I guess that's all for this time, will probably sit down on another night to slowly post about what happened this year round for me. In regards to my previous post dated 3 months ago, exam was over 2 months ago, and pretty much failed to reach my expectations in certain areas. Gotta step it up within this last 2 months before the finals if I ever want to set foot in Malaysia this summer!

Why Code Geass is worse than Scryed

I personally find Code Geass to be awesome but never watched Scryed so I can't really comment much on this. On a side note, a new Code Geass project is in the works and I'm very much looking forward to it.

Its not hard to write such materials tho in my opinion since there's always politics and war involved in these anime. So the philosophical issues can be brought out as writing points and elaborated more with examples within the show.

Randomness

Life's been pretty rough since the beginning of Year 2. Hence, the lack of updates. I also blame the lack of motivation and laziness.

Year 1 was a joke compared to Year 2, gotta miss the days of staying up late doing random stuff, and the relatively not-so-heavy work load compared to this year. The timetable is so much more packed and I have something to do almost everyday. So far Tuesdays are days off for me but once Community/UCCT/GP attachment starts, I won't have any more off days. Argh...

Entering the hospital as medical students is a new experience overall, pretty interesting as we get to see stuff and walk around the wards. But at the end of the day, we are pretty much just there to watch and learn, instead of discuss and participate cos we are just LEVEL 1s as opposed to the LEVEL 99 Consultants. Ok, put that as LEVEL 2 since I'm a Year 2 after all. Main objective in hospital is to walk around and find patients to take histories from, present them to anyone above you, and get their signatures. Need them signatures so that I can sit for my finals in July.

Unfortunately, nurses like Angie here only exist in Trauma Center

Starting the year as secretary for Liverpool Malaysian Society also increased my workload by a bit. Let's hope LMS gets a successful year ahead with our committee. With the Nottingham Malaysian Games 2009 coming soon, got a few issues to settle before I can sit back and enjoy the trip to Nottingham. (I'm going this year, so who else is gonna be there?)

Nottingham Malaysian Games 2009

Got my results for my SSM allocation. Got my first choice this time and its "Introduction to Acupuncture". Looking forward to a semi-holiday in mid-November so I can finally relax. Got a whole month to write up this article/report and I get some hands on experiences it seems.

Needles... Lol

Lacking time, I find myself watching less anime, reading less manga, and playing less games. So much for my ACG hobbies. Managed to finish To Aru Majutsu no Index since I came here, and been into MBAA with Hero most of the time. Yeah, my ex-college mate is here doing Engineering so we get to hang out a lot. At least I'm not so bored anymore heh. And I attended SVB 2009 in London, which was a blast. Looking forward to the fighting games scene growing in UK so we get more competition. More regular meet ups too heh.

MBAA is awesome. Play it.

Another good thing this year is the quality of accommodation improved compared to last year. So far I'm enjoying my new room. And I have better equipment this year hehe. (LCD Monitor, PS2, Gaming peripherals etc.) My room turned more otaku-ish too lol. Watching anime on a 21-inch monitor feels so good~

All in all, I'm glad I made it to the following year, and still in 1 piece despite all the H1N1 stuff going on. With so many flights over the month, what are the chances of me getting that heh?

A little sad that I couldn't make it to GACC but hopefully there's still next year. Daicon was a worthwhile experience and I got Minorin's signature!

Last but not least, I'm grateful for everything so far, especially today. Hopefully I will not have to go through this anymore in the following years as a Medical Student.

Hmm, what do they have in common? Besides being all female, and the same personality trait, they happen to be voiced by the same seiyuu, Rie Kugimiya.

Its rare for me to wish some seiyuu happy birthday, but I'm actually quite a fan of her lol. I watched most of the anime where she had a main role, and she's worthy of the title 'tsundere queen'.

Rie Kugimiya isn't that young anymore lol. She's 30 this year, but fret not as she shows no signs of retiring from the seiyuu business anytime soon. Guess we could expect more tsundere roles coming from her in the near future :) She also sings, but usually its for anime OP/EDs. Her singing ability isn't actually top tier, but it fits the characters she portray.

Meaning of Existence

Picture above is unrelated to the topic at discussion. But Ryougi Shiki from Kara no Kyoukai is just too awesome to be ignored. In fact, with a name like 空の境界, which means a state of emptiness, I feel like I can relate to it at times.

Anyway, the question posed today is "Why does your blog exist?"

In terms of definition, A blog (a contraction of the term weblog) is a type of website, usually maintained by an individual with regular entries of commentary, descriptions of events, or other material such as graphics or video. Entries are commonly displayed in reverse-chronological order. "Blog" can also be used as a verb, meaning to maintain or add content to a blog.

That's a really technical and detailed explanation but ultimately, a blog is where one expresses him or herself, through pictures or words. Some may use their blogs to talk about personal problems while seeking for advice, while others may choose to jot down interesting events that took place in their lives, and others may write up on their hobbies and interests instead. Some times, when feeling emo and all, some people just write out their sorrow and despairs, hoping for an audience to read it and post encouraging comments. And some wish to share their happiness and joy with others instead. Others might just want to show off their latest possession or achievement to induce jealousy. In fact, some even use their blogs to earn money, by writing regular articles of various fields.

As for me, I do a bit of everything. I share interesting articles I stumble upon the net, write about stuff that happen in my life, and from time to time, post about anime, manga or gaming. If a particular song or video interests me, I'll surely post about them or upload to my radio.blog. Unfortunately, I've been slacking lately but I kinda doubt if anyone actually listens to my radio.blog anyway lol.

At the end of the day, your blog is your personal space on the internet and you are free to do anything with it. You - the owner of the blog control how the blog looks, be it through Cascading Style Sheets, custom themes or skins, or HTML/Javascript for the experts. Not only aesthetics, but also down to the content on display at your very own blog are within your control.

Actually what prompted me to write this post was a combination of factors. Yeng's comment on my recent post titled "Killed by a mini-skirt" was one of them. He commented about how Gundam 00 contains moral values lol and said,

" I'm drawing parallels to anime because well yeah Lim's blog is pretty much an anime blog and also trying to find truth in the idea that anime should be taken as seriously as other literary works and, of such, should contain analyzable information such as themes and moral values. This post is intended to be taken light-heartedly "

This site is pretty much 50% an anime blog already. What inspired me to take such a direction for this site? Suppose it started back when I was in A-Levels. As I watch more and more anime, I grew from the quiet watcher to someone interested in contributing to the community. Animeblogger.net largely inspired me to do so. In fact, checking out various anime bloggers on Animeblogger.net Antenna is a daily chore for me since 2 years ago. This keeps me updated in the world of ACG (Anime, Comic, Games).

A few anime bloggers greatly inspired me to keep going on, including the likes of Dark Mirage, Riuva, Sankaku Complex, Danny Choo etc. Dark Mirage writes good and funny stuff from time to time, Sankaku is just awesome as a news site, having site traffic in the millions on a daily basis. Danny Choo is what every anime blogger aspires to be, he earns money through blogging and is a celebrity in the real world, he gets free figures and free products, he also gets to hang out with idols too, isn't that just awesome.

Riuva on the other hand churns out the funniest posts I've read in recent times. Check out this, this, this, this, this, and this.

Of course, most of these anime bloggers use various anime as reference in their posts, but the ones I highlighted and linked are understandable by mere mortals who are not in to anime as well (to a certain degree). Those posts are totally made of WIN.

Anyway, to end this post, I'm proud to say that my blog will remain as a personal online diary, that captures chapters in my life in the form of words and pictures. To summarize:

Why I started blogging? Mainly due to peer pressure I suppose, initially.
Why I kept on blogging? I think its kinda useful as it keeps my writing abilities in decent shape. And people would want to know how I'm getting on with life since I'm not the kind to talk alot on MSN, so I guess my blog will do most of the talking instead.
Will I keep on blogging? Yeah sure. Will I stop due to busyness? Not any time soon heh.

Who knows 10 years from now, I'll be sitting in front of a monitor reading my first ever blog post made in 2005, laughing at my childishness or immature writing, which really still exists even till today.

Wagaya no Oinarisama

I'm trying to keep up with my backlog of anime that I've watched. First up, Wagaya no Oinarisama (我が家のお稲荷さま or 我家有個狐仙大人).

I'll start with the summary of the plot, which is copy pasta from ANN again.

Noboru and Toru are two brothers that have grown away from their family's secret. The fact that their family can use the Water ki and can ward off demons. But when a demon is after Toru's life, in order for the family to keep him safe they need to awaken the fox-spirit Kūgen. Kūgen will not help for the sake of the family but only for the sake of the children's late mother.

Well that's basically the basic plot line, and the 24 Episodes revolve around the everyday life of Kugen and the family, with occasional arcs involving different enemies each time. And yeah, the enemies are after Toru since he supposedly has stronger ki in him, which is tasty to the demons. And its up to Kugen to stop the demons.

Wagaya no Oinarisama has a really relaxing atmosphere to it. Well suspense do build up a little in the rare fights but in the end, you know Kugen is gonna kick butt since he/she is so powerful. I enjoy the episodes without fights more, since its interesting to see a thousand year old fox spirit getting exposed to modern culture after being sealed away for so long. In earlier episodes, Kugen was like "What's this? What's that", clueless to what modern electrical appliances like televisions are.

Kugen

Kugen being a fox spirit, gives her the ability to shapeshift or transform into human form. And there's both genders to this lol. But the female version of Kugen is much more fitting for her personality, like a spoilt brat.

Kou

Kou, the shrine maiden or miko. She's really clumsy and all, but don't mess with her since she has strong powers as well. One of my favourite characters in the show. She's also really slow and kinda dumb but that makes her all the more adorable lol.

Takagami brothers

Toru and Noboru. Toru is the younger one, and has stronger ki making him the prime target of demons. Noboru on the other hand is the eldest in the family, making him the leader of the clan or sorts. Well they are there to play the roles of victims lol, since they don't really have fighting abilities. Still main characters so they do play a role in the plot and appear every episode.

There are more characters still, but then most of them just play a side role and pop up occasionally.

Honestly speaking, I like the art style of the light novel more. Its easy to distinguish between the novel and anime. For example, this is Kugen in the novel.

The ending wasn't really a true end, so a next season is still possible. This show is also based on the light novel series of the same title, and that's how I first got to know about this series, by stumbling upon it on a chinese manga site. So there's plenty of material to work on I guess, unless the animators want to do an original story instead.

Overall a good watch that is relaxing and enjoyable. Nothing spectacular about the plot, but the characters make up for it in my opinion. And if you like foxes, just watch it then. Be warned, its no Wolf's Rain or [insert emo anime here], but does involve these furry animals in the form of spirits.

More anime backlog to catch up and hopefully will be covered over the next few days... And I need to get into studying mode soon. Sigh...
