'Twilight' hunk Robert who has constantly been linked with co-star Kristen Stewart has cleared the air around his love life after admitting that he is single.

The duo's on-screen chemistry as lovers in the vampire saga became an instant hit with fans but the 23-year-old actor has now refuted his much-hyped relationship with Stewart insisting it's not true, New York Daily News quoted him telling Italian magazine Vanity Fair.

"I am single ... almost everything that came out about my private life is false. I think it happens because, really, there is not much to say about what I'm doing," Pattinson said.

The British actor, who plays vampire Edward Cullen in the 'Twilight saga' says he has a quiet life, spending lot of time on his own.

"While I am filming, I live practically [like a] recluse in [a] hotel. I come out only to work, and sometimes to go out for dinner. But, if you read the magazines, it seems that I have a frantic high life," Pattinson added.

New York: Troubled Tiger Woods and his wife Elin Nordegren may be preparing for a getaway as workers were spotted loading supplies on the golfer's yacht "Privacy".

According to the Daily Mail, the name of the 155-foot, 22million dollar yacht on the stern was covered to avoid any media attention, reports the New York Post.

Nordegren had once said the vessel was a "private respite" to escape "the rigors of my husband's celebrity" and it looks like that is exactly what they are planning to do now.

According to ABCNews.com, Tiger and his wife will be leaving for Sweden, "and they want to leave as soon as possible," a pal said.

Representatives of Scarlett Johansson and Ryan Reynolds have rubbished reports that actor missed Comic-Con convention over a feud with wife.

They insist that Reynolds was in Europe shooting for a film.

"[The report] is completely untrue," People magazine quoted the reps as saying.

"Warner Brothers never planned to have Green Lantern as part of their panel at this year's Comic-Con and Ryan is in Europe shooting a film," they added.

According to reports, the couple, who tied the knot last September, were caught in a fight last week as they were about to depart for San Diego's Comic Con sci-fi convention.

Il faisait partie de la seconde saison de la "Star Academy", en 2002. Depuis, les temps sont durs pour Jérémy, son deuxième album ne rencontre pas le succès escompté. Les raisons de cet insuccès? Charts In France passe tout au crible, avec l'intéressé, très lucide...

Charts In France (Thierry Cadet, rédacteur) : Salut Jérèm' ! Six mois après la sortie de ton deuxième album, "Variété française", quel serait ton bilan ?
Jérémy Chatelain : Plutôt positif au niveau de la presse car mon album a eu de très bonnes critiques; maintenant au niveau des ventes et du classement au Top, c'est plutôt la galère... (sourire) Les radios ne suivent pas et donc, les ventes non plus... (ndlr : l'album de Jérémy est entré 107ème du Top le 18 mars dernier, pour finir 181ème en deuxième semaine, puis disparaitre du classement...). J'ai cela dit un petit noyau dur de fans d'à peu près 5 000 personnes, et eux, ils sont toujours là !

CIF : 5 000 fans pour quelqu'un qui réunissait entre 7 et 10 millions de télespectateurs chaque vendredi soir sur TF1, qui a vendu des millions de disques avec la "Star Ac'" (deux gros tubes en 2002/2003 : "Musique" et "Paris Latino"), puis rempli Bercy, c'est bien peu...
JC : C'est la dure loi de ce système... mais attention, avec la "Star Ac'" nous étions un groupe, alors que là je suis seul... (sourire) J'en profite d'ailleurs pour passer le bonjour à tous les gens du Blog parce que je suis super en retard dans mes messages et qu'en plus, j'y comprends rien ! (rires) En fait je galère toujours pour trouver une connection au Net...

CIF : Ton premier album éponyme avait pourtant plutôt bien fonctionné, grâce notamment aux succès des singles "Laisse faire" (ndlr : Top 10 en 2003) et "Vivre ça" (Top 40 en 2003)...
JC : Oui, mais on sortait de la médiatisation "Star Ac'"... et nous étions la seconde saison, maintenant il y en a quatre supplémentaires ! Les donnes ne sont plus les mêmes... je souhaite d'ailleurs beaucoup de courage aux prochains !

CIF : Quelle est l'évolution majeure entre ton premier et ton second album ?
JC : Le temps ! (rires) Le premier avait été réalisé dans l'urgence avec des bouts de chansons que j'avais déjà écrit avant l'émission, alors que le second a été mûrement réfléchi, travaillé etc. On a pris le temps de faire ce qu'on avait envie de faire. La maison de disques m'a laissé carte blanche et c'est bien. Et puis bien sûr, quel honneur aussi d'avoir travaillé avec Jean Fauque, qui est quand même le parolier de Bashung ! J'en suis très fier. J'ai eu la reconnaissance du métier, et Dieu sait si c'est difficile quand tu sors de la "Star Ac'"... parce que la reconnaissance du public, grâce ou à cause - parce qu'à tort - de la surmédiatisation, elle est quasi-immédiate ! Ensuite il te faut ramer... mais aujourd'hui que j'ai la presse, je n'ai plus le public ! (éclats de rire)

CIF : Combien y a-t-il eu de singles extraits de ce deuxième opus ?
JC : Trois. Enfin le premier était "Katmandou"; il a été envoyé aux radios et puis finalement on a basculé sur "Variété française", ce qui me convenait mieux parce que c'est avec ce titre que je voulais revenir, histoire de couper l'herbe sous le pied de mes détracteurs ! (sourire) Je n'ai jamais revendiqué le fait d'être un chanteur rock et de faire du rock, même si j'en ai l'attitude : je fais de la variété et je le revendique ! J'ai un peu le cul entre deux chaises, entre le rock et la Corrèze ! (rires) Quant au nouveau single, il s'agit de "J'veux qu'on m'enterre".

CIF : Mais on ne les entend nulle part...
JC : C'est bien le problème, aucun média ne joue le jeu... Si, il y a quand même eu un clip pour "Variété française", un très beau clip d'ailleurs.

CIF : Oui mais en partenariat avec TF1, contrat avec eux oblige... est-ce qu'M6 a suivi ?
JC : Non. Il faut du temps je crois. Tu sais ils sont peu nombreux les candidats à la "Star Ac'" a avoir réussi à s'imposer et à petit à petit gommer l'étiquette. Il y a Olivia Ruiz bien sûr, Nolwenn et Elodie Frégé, et encore... c'est très long. Je crois que c'est dans une dizaine d'années seulement qu'on se rendra compte de ceux qui restent.

CIF : Souffres-tu de cette image qui te colle à la peau ?
JC : Je ne regrette rien de ce que j'ai fais. J'en serais encore à passer mon temps à jouer dans mon garage sinon, mais je déplore l'étiquette qu'on nous colle à longueur de temps sur le dos, ça oui.

CIF : Tu es auteur, compositeur, interprète; tu as récemment écris une chanson en hommage à ta maman disparue des suites d'une longue maladie...
JC : Oui, ma maman est partie alors que j'étais en plein tourbillon après la "Star Ac'". Ce fût un moment très difficile, un énorme malheur dans des moments de bonheur; c'est très étrange à vivre... Je lui ai écris "Laisse-toi partir", une chanson que je ne peux d'ailleurs plus écouter, elle me fait trop mal.

CIF : Tu as également écris pour Jonatan Cerrada sur son deuxième album...
JC : Oui, Jonatan est un pote. Je lui ai écris "Un dimanche d'automne"; c'est pareil, c'est dur pour Jonatan avec le label "Nouvelle Star".

CIF : Tu sais que Jonatan avait déclaré pour Charts in France vouloir qu'"Un dimanche d'automne" soit son prochain single ?
JC : Ah non je n'en savais rien. J'en suis très flatté.

CIF : Pourquoi t'es-tu séparé de Philippe Miro ("Star Ac' 2") qui t'accompagnait sur scène à la guitare ?
JC : Je ne me suis pas séparé de Philou ! Tout va très bien, c'est juste qu'il avait besoin de voguer vers ses projets à lui (ndlr : Philippe Miro travaille actuellement avec Aktarüs, le groupe de Patrice Maktav ("Star Ac' 1")) mais on est resté en très bons termes.

CIF : Qui revois-tu de ta promo à la "Star Ac" ?
JC : G.A (ndlr : Georges-Alain Jones), Alex, Emma, Nolwenn, c'est tout. Tu sais, la "Star Ac'" c'est une école, et comme dans toutes les écoles, chacun part ensuite sur ses projets. Alors c'est vrai aussi que quand on se croise sur les plateaux, on est très content de se revoir ! (sourire)

CIF : As-tu écouté leurs albums respectifs ?
JC : Oui. Emma, qui est comme un pote pour moi, je lui ai même dit que les morceaux que je préférais étaient ceux qu'elle avait écrit et composés elle-même. Quant à Georges-Alain, je crois qu'il préfère faire du surf plutôt que de s'occuper de sa promo ! (rires)

CIF : Et Anne-Laure Sibon qui a autoproduit son premier album ?
JC : Non. Je ne l'ai pas jamais reçu celui-là ! (sourire) Je regrette de ne pas revoir Anne-Laure, je sais juste qu'elle s'est mariée cet été avec son amie, et qu'elle participe à la fin de l'année à un spectacle sur Joe Dassin avec Houcine, Aurélie, Mario...

CIF : Et Aurélie Konaté, avec qui tu semblais très proche ?
JC : Ma Lili ! Non je ne la revois pas plus que les autres...

CIF : Penses-tu que vous êtes la meilleure promo de toutes les saisons ?
JC : Tu n'as qu'à compter le nombre de personnes dont on entend encore parler aujourd'hui et tu as la réponse : Emma Daumas, Nolwenn Leroy, Anne-Laure Sibon...

CIF : Tu n'en as pas assez de voir ta vie privée étallée dans les journaux ?
JC : Si. Mais maintenant j'emploie les grands moyens : il y a quelques jours, avec des potes, on a poursuivi un paparazzi qu'on avait repéré, il a dû nous rendre sa pellicule !

CIF : Ah oui ! Tu ne rigoles pas...
JC : J'en ai assez de me retrouver avec Alizée et ma fille dans les journaux people !

CIF : Justement, pourrais-tu nous livrer quelques indiscrétions sur le prochain album d'Alizée ?
JC : (sourire) Tout ce que je peux te dire, c'est qu'il ne sera pas question de Mylène Farmer et Laurent Boutonnat.

CIF : Et toi, écris-tu pour elle ? On a murmuré aussi une collaboration avec Nicola Sirkis, le leader d'Indochine...
JC : Alizée a, en effet, rencontré Nicola mais finalement la collaboration n'aura pas lieu. Par contre, je lui écris des choses, et Jean Fauque devrait également participer à l'album. Pour le reste, je ne peux rien te dire de plus, tu n'as qu'à le lui demander à elle ! (sourire)

CIF : Et la comédie Jérémy ? Ton dernier rôle remonte à celui que tu tenais aux côtés de Bernard Tapie en 2003 dans "Commissaire Valence" sur TF1...
JC : Pour l'instant je n'ai pas de projets, mais la comédie m'intéresse toujours.

CIF : Ta collaboration avec Pierre Palmade, qui a mis en scène ta dernière série de concerts, n'a pas eu de suite ?
JC : Non, mais Pierre a beaucoup de travail; on ne sait jamais...

CIF : Quand à ta collection de vêtements, Sir Sid ?
JC : Elle se porte très bien, on les vendait sur Internet via peoplemode.com mais le site a cessé ses activités. Je recherche maintenant un autre moyen de distribution.

CIF : Pour finir, ton actualité c'est "J'veux qu'on m'enterre", ton nouveau single ?
JC : Oui. J'avais envie d'une chanson qui décrive ce moment, mon enterrement, mais avec tous mes amis réunis et... heureux ! Je n'ai pas envie qu'on pleure, mais plutôt qu'on y fasse la fête !

CIF : Ca pourrait être une très bonne idée de clip...
JC : Oui, avec un daron manouche qui apprendrait à son neveu, Georges-Alain, à faire de la gratte, puis Pagny, Faudel, Diam's, Carla Bruni... mais je doute qu'il y en ai un cette fois.

CIF : Pourquoi ?
JC : Parce que ça coûte cher, et comme les ventes ne suivent pas...

CIF : Pour finir, où te vois-tu dans dix ans ?
JC : Dans mon studio ! Je continuerai de toutes façons à composer, écrire, arranger... je suis dans mon élément dans mon bocal ! Bien plus que sur scène d'ailleurs; même si je prépare actuellement, avec mon groupe, une série de concerts afin d'aller présenter l'album au public.

Teenage Girls Stand by Their Man

IN the hallway of Hostos-Lincoln Academy in the Bronx this week, two ninth-grade girls discussed the pop singer Chris Brown, 19, who faces two felony charges for allegedly beating his girlfriend, the pop singer Rihanna, 21. At first, neither girl had believed Mr. Brown, an endearing crooner, could have done such a thing.

“I thought she was lying, or that the tabloids were making it up,” one girl said.

Even after they saw a photo of Rihanna’s bloodied, bruised face, which had raced across the Internet, they still defended Mr. Brown. “She probably made him mad for him to react like that,” the other ninth grader said. “You know, like, bring it on?”

The girls agreed that Mr. Brown overreacted. According to court documents, the fight last month erupted after Rihanna read a text message to Mr. Brown from another woman. Mr. Brown, the affidavit said, then punched, bit and choked her.

Should he be punished? No, said the girls, whose names were withheld at the request of the school. After all, they said, Rihanna seemed to have reconciled with Mr. Brown.

“So he shouldn’t get into trouble if she doesn’t feel that way,” one girl said. “She probably feels bad that it was her fault, so she took him back.”

Her friend nodded. “I don’t think he’ll hit her like that again,” she said.

On blogs and social networking sites, teenagers are having an e-shouting match about this highly publicized episode — perhaps the first time their generation has been compelled to think aloud about dating violence.

And what may be surprising is the level of support for Mr. Brown. While thousands of teenagers have certainly turned on Mr. Brown, many others — regardless of race or gender — defend him, often at Rihanna’s expense.

In a recent survey of 200 teenagers by the Boston Public Health Commission, 46 percent said Rihanna was responsible for what happened; 52 percent said both bore responsibility, despite knowing that Rihanna’s injuries required hospital treatment. On a Facebook discussion, one girl wrote, “she probly ran into a door and was too embarrassed so blamed it on chris.”

This reaction has alarmed parents and professionals who work with teenagers, and Oprah Winfrey was prompted to address violence in teenage relationships on her show. Boys who condone Mr. Brown’s behavior disappoint, but don’t shock Marcyliena Morgan, executive director of Harvard’s hip-hop archive. “But it’s the girls!” she said. “Where have we gone wrong here?”

Underneath harsh, judgmental bravado, teenage girls themselves seem perplexed by the unfolding story, whipsawed by allegiance to their celebrities, fantasies about romantic relationships, and the terrifying mysteries of intimate violence — the savagery of the beating as well as the speed with which Rihanna apparently agreed to see him again.

Mimi Valdés Ryan, former editor in chief of Vibe magazine and the one who put Chris Brown on the cover in 2006, said the defense of him by so many young girls can be understood in part because they are adoring fans.

Even before this incident, Mr. Brown’s core fans didn’t like Rihanna, said Ms. Valdés Ryan, now editor in chief of Latina, a magazine for young women. “His posters are on the bedroom wall, the last face they see before they sleep,” she said. “They’re feeling, ‘Why is he with her, not with me?’ ”

As word of the incident spread, girls could not believe he could wreak such violence, she said. After all, sweet Chris Breezy — his nickname — even appeared in a music video with Elmo of “Sesame Street.” Acknowledging his attack would make them feel vulnerable: How could they have a crush on someone who could do that? It was less terrifying to blame Rihanna.

Many girls interpreted every new detail through a lens of forgiveness, Ms. Valdés Ryan said. When video emerged of Mr. Brown describing abuse suffered by his mother, many commented that Mr. Brown, of all people, should have restrained himself. But his fans, Ms. Valdés Ryan said, turned the information around: “They feel bad for him,” she said. “It’s not his fault, he doesn’t know better. We need not judge him.”

Many observers familiar with adolescent impulsivity say the rush-to-judgment also reflects a developmental stage. “What they feel in the morning can be different from what they feel in the evening,” said Esta Soler of the Family Violence Prevention Fund in San Francisco. “It’s very fluid.”

The girls’ willingness to minimize Mr. Brown’s alleged behavior also reflects a learned social signal, said Professor Morgan, who teaches African-American studies at Harvard. They’ve been taught, she said, “What really matters is that we don’t destroy boys.” Teenage girls think that if they speak out against an abuser, the boy’s future will be shattered, she said. “We have to appreciate that this is not simple for them.”

Certainly from the outset, thousands of girls and boys howled online at Chris Brown, expressing sympathy for their pop princess, RiRi. But when the young singer apparently reunited with Mr. Brown, her supporters turned on her.

“SHAME ON YOU RIHANNA!!!” one girl wrote.

Brian O’Connor, of the Family Violence Prevention Fund, said because adolescents see absolutes, they struggle to understand the complexities of why a woman would return to her abuser. “There’s love and loyalty there,” he said. “It’s not that she wants the relationship to end. She wants the violence to stop.”

Even getting this generation of teenage girls to see violence as abuse has its own challenges. Tricia Rose, who teaches African-American culture at Brown, said that the singers and their young fans are a generation steeped in commercial hip-hop, which has influenced the smack-down tone of so many recent comments. The qualified support of Mr. Brown by a few male artists also gave cover to his fans’ fidelity.

“This is the air that hip-hop breathes,” said Ms. Rose, author of “The Hip Hop Wars.” “The celebration of a stereotype of an aggressive, physical, often misogynistic masculinity that often justifies resolving conflict through violence. It can’t be held responsible for this, but it can’t be ignored.”

Moreover, teenage girls can’t be expected to support Rihanna just because of her gender, youth culture experts say. They see themselves as sharing equal responsibility with boys. Parity, not sisterhood, is the name of the game.

During a presentation about dating violence to ninth graders at Hostos-Lincoln Academy this week, one girl said, “If they hit you, smack them back. Both my parents say that to me.”

When Danielle Shores, 17, a high school junior in Austin, Tex., heard about the fight, she thought: “Yeah, men hit women, and women hit men. It was blown out of proportion because they’re celebrities.”

She sounded miffed. “My best friend got hit by her boyfriend, and I don’t see people making a big deal about it,” Ms. Shores said.

There is a lot of violence among young partners. Although the study of abuse in adolescent relationships is scarcely a decade old, the incidence is startling. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly 10 percent of teenagers report being hit or slapped by a boyfriend of girlfriend.

Some studies suggest that girls are more likely than boys to report being aggressive within a dating relationship.

But Dr. Elizabeth Miller, an adolescent pediatrician at the School of Medicine at the University of California, Davis, pointed out: “The numbers of girls who sustain serious injuries, and the sexual violence sustained against girls, is much higher than boys.”

In the last few years, efforts to educate teenagers about abusive relationships have begun. Ms. Shores recently interviewed peers about abuse through Austin’s SafePlace, one of 11 programs nationwide, to receive funding for Start Strong, a teenage intervention initiative.

At Hostos-Lincoln Academy last week, Yalitza Garcia, who works with Day One, an education and counseling group for New York adolescents, led a peppery talk with ninth graders.

“Everyone blames Rihanna for this, right?” she said. “She deserves it for being so jealous?” Some students nodded.

After Ms. Garcia’s session, the students’ English teacher gave them homework. They were studying “Othello,” Shakespeare’s tragedy about jealousy, in which Othello smothers his wife, Desdemona.

Their assignment?

“Rewrite the ending of ‘Othello,’ ” they were told, “where there’s an intervention before Othello comes in with the pillow.”

American actress Jennifer Aniston will be tying the knot with her beau John Mayer after she reportedly made demands of a marriage.

According to Showbiz Spy , Jennifer, 39, no longer wanted to have a boyfriend-girlfriend relationship with Mayer, 31, once they reunited after a brief split in August.

“John's finally agreed to marry her - and they're now planning a traditional Greek Orthodox wedding,” the Daily Telegraph quoted a source as saying. “Jen made it clear to John that she was not willing to re-establish the relationship on a boyfriend-girlfriend basis, as it had been since they first hooked up last April. And that's when she issued John her ultimatum - that it was time for them to walk down the aisle together,” the source said.

Mumbai terror attacks: Nightmare in the lap of luxury

From the moment a small boat nudged the shore of Mumbai's Fisherman's Colony on Wednesday evening and decanted eight young men clad in orange anoraks, the plan was simple: kill and keep killing to the very last breath.

The little group paused to shed their waterproof jackets, revealing jeans and T-shirts. Picking up their bulging rucksacks from the black inflatable, they turned silently and set off towards the heart of India's financial capital.

The beach was virtually empty, most of the residents of the area having retreated indoors to watch the final stages of the one-day cricket match between India and England. India won, but it was the last piece of good news the country would have until yesterday morning when Mumbai was finally freed from the grip of an audacious terrorist outrage that claimed the lives of at least 195 people.

For 62 hours, the gunmen roamed freely around some of the city's most prestigious hotels, killing at random, holding Mumbai and the wider world in horrified thrall.

Despite the lure of the cricket, one man had ventured out onto the beach on Wednesday evening. Bharat Tamore, an assistant supervisor at the Taj Mahal Palace hotel, was gazing out to sea when he spotted the dinghy drifting noiselessly towards the beach.

It was 9.15pm and by the light of the moon Tahore watched the men jump off. They were young, no more than 25, thin and good-looking, 'like Bollywood stars,' he recalled later, although their faces wore a grim, determined look. On their backs were blue rucksacks, and in their hands red carry-bags heavy enough to cause one of the smaller men to stumble. They were students, they said, when he asked what they were doing: 'They told me that they were tense and that they didn't need any more tension.'

The young men slipped away into the night in the direction of the Taj Mahal Palace and the ornate splendour of the Gateway of India.

But they were not the only ones on the move. Across the southern tip of the city, others were also collecting weapons and heading out to get the carnage under way. How many there were, no one seems quite sure: as many as 40, some sources suggested.

The key questions are what they intended to achieve in their murderous rampage, their identities, and who sent them to Mumbai. Answers are likely to come in the first instance from one of those who clambered out of the inflatable on Wednesday night - 21-year-old Mohammad Ajmal Mohammad Amin Kasab - the only terrorist known to have been captured alive by Indian security forces. As details of his interrogation were disclosed yesterday in the Indian media, the first proper understanding of what happened in three days of bloodshed began to emerge out of the contradictory details - building a case that pointed ever more strongly towards Pakistan. It is not just the Indian media who are saying out loud what many suspected, but also state officials. What they had only hinted at in the beginning - with Kasab's interrogation - was yesterday stated more boldly. '[The] investigation carried out so far has revealed the hand of Pakistan-based groups in the Mumbai attack,' said Sri Prakash Jaiswal, India's Minister of State for Home Affairs.

As Kasab left the docks, it was in the company of a man the police say has been identified as Ismail Khan, the terrorists splitting into pairs of small kill teams.

The journey that followed across Mumbai - described in the Indian press - took the two men first by taxi to the CST railway station, where Kasab was chillingly photographed as he paused, amid the gunfire and grenades that killed as many as 50 people, in grey combat trousers, a dark blue T-shirt and wearing a rucksack with spare ammunition on one shoulder.

From the railway station Khan and Kasab moved on to the Cama and GT hospitals, firing as they went. According to the same sources, it was during their progress through Mumbai that the pair shot dead the Anti-Terrorism Squad chief Hemant Karkare and another senior officer. Their killing spree was only halted when Khan was shot down in the Girgaum Chowpatty locality of south Mumbai, and when Kasab surrendered.

Now Kasab is talking, and what he has to say is likely to define the future relations of two nuclear-armed rivals - India and Pakistan. Yesterday a Pakistani official said it would divert troops to its border with India and away from fighting militants on the Afghan frontier, if tensions erupt in the wake of the attacks on Mumbai. That the tensions will increase in the coming days seems likely.

Already, if the accounts of his questioning are to be believed, Kasab has revealed that, like him, most of his fellow attackers hailed from Pakistan - although that has yet to be confirmed. He revealed that the group had been planning the attack for months. Some are thought to have taken jobs in the targeted hotels, others had checked in as guests a few days earlier, using their rooms to stockpile weapons. Kasab - from Faridkot in Pakistan - and eight others had visited Mumbai a few months earlier, posing as students and taking a room in the Colaba market area, which they used as a safe-house to store the supplies they would need for the attacks. According to police, Kasab told them that the main planner arrived in Mumbai a month ago to film potential targets to help train the gunmen. Once he was satisfied that they were ready, the boat team members were each issued with an AK-47 rifle, a pistol, 350 bullets and eight hand-grenades.

A recovered GPS device suggested they set out from the Pakistani port of Karachi in a larger boat - though such is the friction between the two countries that such reports have to be treated with caution - before overpowering the crew of another vessel and sailing to within four nautical miles of Mumbai. There, they transferred to speedboats and made for the shore. So began a night of terror.

Even as Kasab and Khan were attacking the CST station, another pair of gunmen hit the the Leopold Café, a popular haunt for backpackers. Witnesses described how the gunmen took weapons out of backpacks and hurled grenades, killing at least one person. More gunmen moved through the area in a hijacked police vehicle, firing indiscriminately.

At Nariman House, the attackers went for a Jewish centre run by Rabbi Gavriel Holtzberg, and his wife Rivka. The couple's son Moshe, two, was rescued by his nanny. They were the only survivors.

But the images of horror that will forever be associated with one of India's darkest days were reserved for elsewhere - the imposing Oberoi and Taj Mahal Palace hotels, frequented by Western business travellers and well-heeled Indians. Here it was the restaurants that took the brunt of the initial assault, but the terrorists quickly fanned out to round up more hostages. At the Taj, the first shots were fired near the swimming pool before the gunmen swarmed into the hotel.

It was in the Taj that a sinister new element to the attack emerged. Survivors said the gunmen were particularly interested in British and American guests, singling them out as targets and ignoring other nationalities. Guests scattered in panic as the carnage continued. 'There were people getting shot in the corridor. There was someone dead outside the bathroom,' said 28-year-old Australian former Neighbours actress Brooke Satchwell.

Bharat Tamore had reached the hotel only a few minutes earlier. Changing into his uniform ready for the night shift, he heard gunshots coming from the fashionable Shamiana restaurant above. 'I stepped out and saw staff and guests running. It was then I remembered those eight boys,' he said.

Paralysed by fear, he crouched with staff in the kitchen, listening to the crump of explosions and crackle of machine-gun fire until 4am, when they made a dash for freedom.

At the Oberoi, Madhu Kumar, 58, had sat down to a meal with her husband Ashok, 65, and two friends. Panic spread through the room as a gunman burst in, herding them up the stairs. 'He had a scarf like a bandana and a scarf on his mouth and he was carrying a machine gun,' she said. 'There was a stampede. We had heard a commotion and a lot of loud firing. Everybody got panicky. I saw a girl with a bleeding arm. She had been shot.'

She noticed that the gunman was quite fair-skinned and spoke in English - he was a Kashmiri, perhaps, she said. As they moved up the stairs, she heard a gunshot behind her. 'This man was shot by a terrorist behind us. The terrorist said "wait", and I heard the shot and he fell. They were just shooting people at random.'

Caught on the hop and hopelessly outgunned, police struggled to cope. The first team to respond consisted of just eight members of the Mumbai force, each armed with a revolver. It took until 2am for the first military personnel to arrive, a group of 40 Marine commandos summoned from their beds to go to the Taj. Even then, no one was able to give them any information about the layout of the hotel. They did not know the strength of their opponents or what weapons they possessed. Entering the hotel, they found about 15 bodies, but before they could do anything else the terrorists opened fire and hurled grenades. By the time the firing stopped, the gunmen had slipped away into the maze of corridors and passageways in the old building.

Now in the aftermath that has left almost 200 dead - perhaps more in the final counting - it is not simply the question of who sent Kasab and his fellow gunmen to Mumbai that is exercising a shocked India. After three days of combat in which a handful of highly trained and motivated gunmen held off against massively superior Indian forces before being at last overwhelmed, what India wants to know is how its security forces could have been caught so flat-footed yet again, when they should have been at the highest state of vigilance after a series of murderous attacks around the country this year.

How, too, some asked, had they failed so dramatically to bring the situation under control during the best part of three days?

Sitting in a side street listening to the sound of loud blasts and gunfire emanating from Nariman House, Rakash Bhaud, the local leader of the far-right Hindu party Shiv Sena, blamed the central government for the failures that, he said, had left them at the mercy of Pakistan-backed terrorists.

'There is a deep anger here against the government for not providing security for the common people,' he said. 'The extremists have taken advantage of this. We don't have the security to fight against this.'

If the attackers' intention was to stir up tensions between India and Pakistan - and by extension, Hindu and Muslim - they most certainly succeeded. Anti-Pakistan slogans were being chanted freely by the crowds who gathered to watch the storming of Nariman House.

As the firing died away yesterday morning, the work of getting the city back on its feet began. In the restaurant at the Oberoi hotel, staff were starting to sweep the broken glass away from the tables on which meals abandoned by the fleeing guests still lay. But it may take a lot longer to sweep away the memories of the events of last week and the old enmities it has stirred up.

For now, however, it is a moment for India to come to terms with what has happened. 'I had arranged to meet a friend in the Oberoi Trident lobby on Wednesday night,' said Malani Agarwal, 31, a radio presenter on Mumbai Radio. 'He said he was coming late, so I went upstairs to a lounge bar called the Dragon Fly which is a few doors away. Then we saw a lot of "fireworks" in the lobby. Ten minutes later we felt a tremor. That was the first grenade, then another one. People started getting texts about a gang war at Leopold's Café and then the Oberoi. The Dragon Café has bulletproof glass and you could see bullets lodged in the windows. That was really scary. We put the television onto the news and saw the Taj burning. The army coming. We all just felt numb. Too scared to move really. It was the worst night of my life. This will be a wake-up call.'
