It all ends tonight! Its the last Office episode, and as a fan of all 9 seasons I must say its bittersweet! I will admit, Seasons 1-3 were the best by far. In fact, I believe the first 3 seasons rivaled on the Seinfeld playing level. However, while the last several seasons have been funny and entertaining, the magic and awkwardness that made the show near perfect in its beginning weren't quite matched. With that thought in mind, I share with you my TOP 10 favorite episodes of ALL-TIME. (in no particular order)

1. Diversity Day (SEASON 1)-Michael Scott trying to promote workplace diversity is a picture-perfect episode of what made this series great!

2. Basketball (SEASON 1)-I love basketball and Michael Scott's blissful ignorance and overconfidence.

3. The Dundies (SEASON 2)-Dinner at Chili's will never be the same.

4. The Fire (SEASON 2)- Ryan started the fire!!!!

5. Christmas Party (SEASON 2)-The gift exchange was classic Office awkwardness and fodder!

6. Women's Appreciation (SEASON 3)- Dwight trying to hunt down a predator! Jim and Pam playing hi jinks. Michael making an awkward moment even more awkwarder. Perfection!

7. Ben Franklin (SEASON 3)-One of the many episodes where Jim proved that he is the man! Dwight arguing with the "real" Ben Franklin....priceless.

8. Initiation (SEASON 3)-We begin to get a better peak into the bizarro life that Dwight leads outside the office. Moes makes an appearance!

9. Fun Run (SEASON 4)-Michael running Meredith over in his car. She gets "rabies". They organize a 5K for a rabies cure. Michael barfs after carbaloading on Fettuccine Alfredo 5 minutes before the race. Greatness!

10. Scott's Tots (SEASON 6)-What's better than a college scholarship? How about a laptop battery!? Whatcha gonna do when your dreams come true!?

Don't believe the hype! News has surfaced over the past couple of weeks that a Soldier can get in trouble for sharing their faith, even court-martialed. This notion is ridiculous for several reasons. First of all, this is not true. Secondly, the hype over the proposed regulation being enforced should clue one in to know that the regulation being blow up has been a regulation in the Army for quite some time. This isn't anything new.

The regulation says that SMs cannot "proselytize". I know many people argue over what proselytizing is and isn't, but basically the way the Army sees it is that its forcefully trying to make converts. An example from another part of the world would be a Muslim forcing a Christian in their country to renounce their faith and follow the ways of Islam. The Army doesn't play that. And they shouldn't. As a Christ-follower, I would never want to force someone to follow Christ. First of all, that's not a "real conversion". Secondly, Christ said "go and make disciples", not "go and force people to convert at gunpoint".

Sharing your faith and evangelizing is perfectly okay. We can tell people about Jesus freely, and share His love constantly! Nobody is regulating that! What you can't do is use your rank to force someone to convert to Christianity or give them extra jobs to do when they refuse or disregard their attempts to get promotion points. What you can't do is harass, taunt, or make fun of someone in the workplace for not being a Christian. That's a great thing! As a Christ-follower, I do NOT want other Christians or so-called Christians doing those things. That misrepresents Christ and everything I stand for!

I'm blessed to serve as an Army Chaplain. In my line of work, I get opportunities to freely share the Gospel with the lost constantly. I've never harassed anyone. I've never played favorites with just the Christians. I've never forced anyone to convert. I simply share the truth of Christ as I go, and I believe many more people are hearing the Gospel through my ministry now than ever did in my ministry in the civilian sector.

Encourage the Soldiers you know to continue living strong, not in fear of "potential" threats to their faith freedoms, but as the Lord's Army, living as light in a very dark place.

As much as we might try to kid ourselves, there's no turning off the "Christian" switch. If that's a practice in your life, there's something wrong. However, the temptation to walk in the flesh rather than according to the Spirit is always a battle we have to face. Its important to remember that there are always opportunities to promote the gospel. There are constantly moments to be the light and declare the love of Christ.

I choose not to put a Christian Fish on my car, not because I don't love Jesus. Personally, my goal is to be more intentional about sharing my faith and showing His love. If I chose to outfit myself with a lot of Christian "gear", I feel I'd wrongly find sufficiency in that to be my testimony. I'm not knocking anyone who does sport the Christian t-shirts, hats, and bracelets. That's just me.

I've heard people say that they don't want the "fish" on their car because they get too mad when they're driving. They're afraid of being a poor witness. I'm not so hip on that philosophy either. That sounds like you're enabling yourself to flip the switch on and off (and probably enabling yourself to flip the bird too!). Regardless of what we wear or put on our cars its important to be consistent and authentic. That authenticity only comes from a genuine passion for following Christ.

As a Chaplain, I constantly wear a badge of my faith....the cross. The cross sits above my nametape and serves as a constant reminder to me of who I ultimately report to and serve. It also serves as a reminder to others who I follow. This past week an opportunity for me to be the gospel and shine the light presented itself in an unusual way.

This week was busy and hectic! One day, my schedule was especially brutal. It seemed like I had one thing after another. Just about all the minutes of my day were accounted for, with the exception of about 30 minutes in the late morning. I finished up doing a brief and decided to use my 30 minutes wisely and go get a quick haircut. After all, it was still morning. I'd beat the lunch rush. I'd be in and out. I'd get my hair squared away and not miss a beat on my busy day.

I walked into the barber shop and it was not too busy. My number was almost immediately called, and I sat in the chair. However, there was something unusual about the lady cutting my hair. She didn't speak good English and she seemed very insecure about getting started. She draped the black cloth over my uniform (incidentally covering up the cross). When you're getting your haircut on post, for that brief moment, people don't know your name, rank, or any other affiliation. Its all covered up by the black cloth. So basically, the other people getting their hair cut had no idea I was a Chaplain or that I was serious about following Jesus. It would be easy for me to think of that as a moment in which I could "turn off the switch".

Very soon into the haircut it was evident to me that the lady cutting my hair was a trainee. She had no idea what she was doing. Usually a haircut on post takes less than 10 minutes. 10 minutes into this cut, this lady was still fooling around with getting the clippers to work. This was not good! I had a busy day ahead of me! I didn't have time to wait for something like this!

I remained calm and kept my cool, but as the time ticked away and the haircut took even longer I started to boil. I wanted to tell the lady to forget it and demand someone else cut my hair, but I knew I couldn't act that way. And besides that, I kinda felt sorry for her. I remained patient and kind on the outside, but again, as the time ticked I grew more restless. Inside I was bubbling! I was ready to dropkick a bunny into a fiery dumpster!

This could not be happening and such a busy day! Long story short, my haircut lasted 48 minutes complete with other barbers telling my barber that she had screwed up my hair and them having to come over and correct her mistakes. After my cut, she removed the black robe from me. I got up and proceeded to the register. Another man who was getting a haircut next to me was in line ahead of me. He turned around and smiled. "Sir," he said. "I was getting worried for you!" He obviously noticed how long and arduous it was for this lady to finish my haircut. However, he continued to say something that really struck a chord with me. "I kept thinking as I was watching you get your haircut, that this man must have the patience of a Saint. And then when she removed the cloth and I saw that you were a Chaplain, I thought no wonder he was so patient with her!"

I smiled and told the man, "I guess she's lucky she got a Chaplain today". However, after that encounter I started to think. What if I would have decided to "turn off the switch"? What if I would have dwelt too much in the flesh and "lost my religion" for a moment, thinking that it wasn't a big deal because I don't know these people and no one knows that I'm a Chaplain under that cloth? How much benefit would I have been to the message of the Gospel?

It reminded me that people are always looking. People are always making assumptions in their mind. People are always processing. Its so imperative that we be authentic Christ-followers, which means that we're Christians all the time, even when people aren't looking. Because even when we think people aren't looking, they still are. One regression could hinder an opportunity to proclaim the love of Christ.

I'm glad for that moment in time, even though it might have been painful. It was an opportunity to declare His love. Not necessarily with my mouth, but through my actions. I pray that I can keep that kind of control always, even though I've had my share of messups.

Listen to what people have to say, before you take small sound bits and blast them for what you think they're saying. Real hate is spreading false truth about someone else or about what they've said. I think that's what has happened to Chris Broussard today of ESPN. He shared some comments about Jason Collins (NBA player who "came out" as gay today), and has since gotten blasted for them. Its interesting that someone can share an opinion and then be labelled as "hateful". There is not one thing hateful about what Chris Broussard said. In fact, he eloquently spoke truth in a way that not many media-types do. Take a look at the video and get your facts straight. Be slow to speak and quick to listen!

No, this isn't a sad attempt at an April Fool's joke. And it is NO JOKE that what Christians around the world celebrated yesterday is VERY REAL! Jesus is alive! It really did happen!

There's no significance that April Fool's Day follows Easter this year, other than the fact that it truly is just as important a day as Easter was yesterday. And no, its not important because Mr. T needs help throwing a pity party. Its important because the celebration of Jesus is not over. Just as we celebrated yesterday with our worship services, dressy clothes, family dinners, and letting the truth of Christ's resurrection dominate our Facebook statuses, there's no call from God to let it stop. No where in scripture are we commanded to be so intentional about the mission and declaration of His truths on just one specific day. In fact, our celebration of Jesus' resurrection was traditionally tagged in with the pagan celebration of Easter.

The Holy Week, Maunday Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter services are nice. However, as Christ followers our daily walk should involve understanding the consequence of sin, appreciating the sacrifice of Christ, knowing the wonderful truth of His victory over death, and joyously declaring that to the world! As believers, we do Christ and the lost world a disservice with our Easter celebrations. We make a huge deal on Easter Sunday, and make a lesser deal the other Sundays (with the exception of Christmas services). Not only that, we make a huge deal on Sunday, and make a lesser deal on Monday morning at work. If the story of Christ is real, then its a big freakin' DEAL....EVERY DAY!!! We enable the Chreasters (people who only show up on Christmas and Easter) with the way we worship, because we often wrap our worship of Jesus into an event or a moment rather than into a lifestyle. We train these "Chreasters" that its only necessary to be a part of the event. Why would they want to come to the lesser celebrations on the other Sundays? Why should they make Christ more than an event, when they see our frowning faces on Monday morning? It appears that we don't make Christ more than that either.

I have to admit, I was impressed with the History Channel's "The Bible" mini-series. It was great seeing the pages of scripture thoughtfully expressed in the creative art form of filmmaking. I was reminded as I watched the conclusion last night, of the passion of the disciples. They carried the message of Jesus into some of the darkest places, and they did so with such joy and boldness. Not only that, it was a daily celebration. It was clear and evident by their testimony that worshipping Jesus was not an event, it was their life.

Is it your life? Is it truly the greatest story you've ever heard or told? If it is, then how are celebrating it today as compared to yesterday? Today is just as important. The story still needs to be told. Happy Resurrection!

I stink at this thing called life. The older I get the more I realize how much I get wrong and how little I know. I'm nothing apart from the grace of God, the love of Christ, and the power of the Spirit. Every single earthly accomplishment I have, I owe it all to God. What's funny is that those earthly accomplishments mean nothing outside of their Kingdom purpose.

This week helps Christ followers focus on what He did and the hope we have. And honestly, we should focus on it every day of the year. Put this in perspective, we all get it wrong. We all know very little. Even though we fill our minds with research, data, and facts, we are still just scratching the cosmic surface. We are nothing without our Creator. Our Creator made us to be in harmony with Him as His worshippers. Sin keeps us from that purpose.

That's why it is so amazing that Jesus took our punishment for sin on a cross, died, rose again, and made a pathway to the Creator! I want nothing more than to focus on that as I breathe each breath. How can I continually tell that wonderful story? How can I point my children and wife to Him? He is everything! Even though I can't get it right, He can.

Praise God for His Son, Jesus! Whatever your Good Friday/Easter Weekend traditions hold, I pray His resurrection and love are what you encounter! May this weekend propel you to declare His love!

It's Holy Week! This is a week of vast emotion and intimate reflection for Christ followers. We celebrate the good news! Jesus Christ, the Son of God, made Himself nothing. He took on the form of a servant, and was obedient to the point of death on a cross! Through His death, He made payment for sin. He provides a way to salvation for all mankind. Why? Because He defeated death and ROSE AGAIN....a miraculous feat that has never been accomplished by anyone else! Our God reigns and He is mighty to save!! The thought of His death and sacrifice brings heartache and remorse for my sin. The thought of His resurrection brings joy and celebration! Truly, this is the greatest story ever told! Its Holy Week! So why would we waste a moment of breath, talking about boycotting Starbucks?

Last night when I asked my daughter if this Sunday was special because an Easter Bunny hides eggs and brings baskets full of goodies she replied with an immediate, "Yes". I was shocked! We talk about Jesus all the time in our house! We pray together every day. We do family devotionals! We attend church. She attends AWANA! She has the resurrection eggs that tell the story of Jesus!! Have we not communicated His resurrection and the importance of Easter enough to her?

I think its more of a commentary of how quickly we lose focus. As soon as I rebutted, "What about Jesus?!", she immediately recalled all she knew about the wonderful story and how it is truly the focus of this week, holiday, and our lives as believers. But for a moment in time, she lost focus like so many of us do.

This week I've read more tweets, blog posts, and Facebook statuses about boycotting Starbucks because their CEO hates traditional marriage. I've read others about boycotting Victoria Secret because they are releasing a line of new lingerie targeted at Middle School girls. The truth is, neither statement about these companies is entirely accurate. Words have been taken out of context. People have jumped to conclusions. Anger has flared quickly.

Now, I'm not endorsing Starbucks or Victoria Secret. There are many reasons why I would NOT personally walk into a Victoria Secret or buy their undergarments for my daughter. However, I wouldn't call it an outright boycott. As for Starbucks...I like their coffee. That doesn't mean I endorse all the opinions of their CEO. Just like I'm certain I don't endorse all the opinions of the CEO of Wal-Mart, Taco Bell, Chuck E. Cheese, Reeces Peanut Butter Cups, ESPN, Walt Disney, Apple, etc.

I'm personally convicted that I need to tell the story, rather than try to send a message to people who don't embrace the story. Many times, "that message", comes across hateful. Boycotting can SUCK....the life straight out of the gospel! That's why I don't always think boycotting is the best response. Maybe it is the best response in some cases. However, make sure you know why and what you are boycotting. Don't get caught up in an nternet-fabricated story! I encourage you to read Russell Moore's post on the Starbucks issue. Its good stuff.

Now, back to the bigger issue. Its Holy Week! What are we about? Are we about boycotting Starbucks to get back at those who boycotted Chick fil A? Or are we about worshipping a God who so loved the world that He sent His only Son to earth to take our place on a cross, and through His Son we can have eternal life!?

There's a time to take a stand. There's a time to speak for truth. When we do so, do it out of love for God and others. In the meantime, stay focused! I was doing a bible study with new believers today. We were studying Ephesians. In Ephesians 1, Paul uses that highly controversial word, "predestined". As the questions started to fly, I answered them as patiently and lovingly as I could. However, I made sure to tell this group that if they focus too much on the controversy of that word (predestined) that they would miss out on Paul's central theme in that particular section of scripture. That theme is centered around encouragement in knowing of the spiritual blessings we have in Christ. I'm certain our enemy loves when Christians argue about predestination, because they lose focus of the great story and truths of Christ.

Don't let our enemy get the last laugh. Our God reigns! Jesus is alive! That's what I want my heart to focus on!

We all know "that family" or "that guy" that sits among us in the pews at our places of worship, and it seems that they march to the beat of a much different tune. Maybe its the 38 bumper stickers on the back of their mini-van that promote different Christian radio stations and boast fantabulous Christian catchphrases or slogans such as, "Beam Me Up, Jesus", "Forbidden Fruits Create Many Jams", or "50 Shades of Grace". Maybe its that they are always smiling or doing something super radical like fasting for 2 months and living in a tent under a bridge.

Whatever it is, its often easy to take notice of those who express their faith differently than most. Now, this post isn't about criticizing those we might be quick to label, "awkward". The point of this post is to truthfully look at that fact that as a Christ-follower, we've all been through the "awkward" phase......and that's perfectly OK!

Recently, my daughter and I have gotten into The Diary of a Wimpy Kid book and movie series. We've watched all three movies and I'm currently reading excerpts from one of the books to her each night. The crux of the stories centers around those "awkward middle school years". We all had them. Middle School is one of the most awkward and strange times of life. I could write my own series on the awkward encounters I had as a middle schooler, ranging from the time I was mistaken for a girl in the cafeteria, to wearing my clothes backwards and getting sent to the office, to having a bully wipe his boogers on my new college sweatshirt, to making cutoffs out of my jeans because I forgot my shorts for gym class.

The truth is, we all experienced those awkward adolescent years. In the same way, I believe we also experience what I would label as "awkward" Christian growing pains. I'm not talking about appearing awkward to the world, because many times we will appear that way, because Christ calls us to be different. I'm talking about an awkwardness that comes with first learning how to follow Christ and pursue God's truths.

Over the last couple of weeks, I've had the privilege to talk with a couple of different new believers. As I talk to them, its reminding me of the many thoughts I had as a young and new believer. Its reminding me of the things I believed that I later discovered weren't entirely true and biblical. Its reminding me of how often I allowed cultural Christianity to direct my paths over genuine Christianity.

As long as the response is Godly, biblical, genuine, and authentic, we shouldn't ever be critical of how someone expresses their faith. We're all different! Some people are naturally more expressive than others. Those Christians might fill the back window of their car with Christian bumper stickers and shiny fish decals. They might mosh pit at a Point of Grace concert. They also might name their kids, Obadiah and Jehoshaphat, and collect every vintage Veggie Tales VHS tape. I'm not knocking that! In the same way, we can't knock the Christ-followers who aren't as outgoing in their expressions. They like to reverently sing and quietly pray. They don't put decals or stickers on their car. But they also don't allow food or drink in their car, because their so focused on being a good steward that their car and house are immaculately clean.

Where the awkwardness comes in is often times through our culture. The new believers I've been talking with all have similar testimony of how they are trying to pursue God and be more faithful to Him, but at the same time they are struggling in giving up some things that they started doing in their former way of life. These things range from listening to rap music, to cursing, drinking, and hanging out with non-believers.

In all the conversations, I tried to encourage these new believers to not think about being a Christ-follower in terms of things you can NO LONGER do, but to think of it in terms of the freedom you have TO DO. In Christ, we are free to love, serve, and glorify God. We're free to share His love with the people around us. There's a joy in that which far outweighs anything else we can occupy our time with. I tried to explain that in our pursuit of following Christ and seeking God's wisdom, we'll make the Godly choices naturally and begin to leave behind the things in our former way of life.

Its awkward when we try to make following Christ a list of DOs and DON'Ts. We put ourselves into a strange cultural box and often times try to become someone we're not. God made you the way you are for a reason! Its okay if you don't get excited about listening to Toby Mac. Its alright if you don't put a banner in your front yard on Christmas that reads, "Jesus is the Reason for the Season". Its not wrong to drive a car without a fish decal. Its okay to laugh at corny church marquee sayings like "Get crunk with Jesus".

God didn't make us all to conform to one personality type. God made us to glorify Him with our unique talents and abilities, and to trust Him to provide strength in those areas in which we're weak or awkward ;)

Yes, the transition from the flesh to a new creation in Christ will be an awkward and very sacrificial transformation. However, its one that should be met with joy and authenticity. We can be assured that when our focus becomes about what we can't do or when our focus becomes about what we can "get away with", that our focus is in the wrong place. Its on self and not Christ.

A Christ-follower will be in constant pursuit of Christ. That's where our focus and attention need be. From one awkward Christian to another, here are some scriptures I believe are pertinent to know as a new believer:

Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these. Mark 12:30-31

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

2 Timothy 3:16-17

Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God’s grace in its various forms 1 Peter 4:10

For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not the result of works, so that no one may boast. Ephesians 2:8-9

Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Hebrews 12:2

Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matthew 28:18-20

What if someone has stage four cancer? What about the elderly and euthanasia? What about a physically healthy young American who has been mentally pounded on? What about a father that just tragically lost his daughter and wife in an accident?

Believe it or not, but these were debated scenarios in regards to whether or not people have the right to commit suicide in a class I attended this past week. In the training, we were asked to reflect on our own attitudes regarding suicide. We all agreed that in a room full of people from different ethnic backgrounds, different faiths, and different circumstances growing up that there might be different attitudes regarding suicide amongst our group.

Two of the questions we were asked were "Is suicide wrong?" and "Do people have the right to suicide?". Let me clearly state my position in regards to these questions:

Is suicide wrong? YES!

Do people have the right to suicide? NO!

I will further elaborate, but first I must point out that my answers were in the minority. Honestly, I was a bit surprised. In a room full of people, I figured there would be a few that thought suicide was somehow okay and that people have the right to it. However, I was surprised that the majority took that view. But then again, it makes complete sense.

You see, its no secret that the Army is hitting all time high numbers in its suicide rate. At a time last year, we were averaging a soldier suicide a day. The Army trains thoroughly on suicide prevention and intervention. The amount of resources, help, and information is tremendous. A soldier would have to be AWOL and living under a rock not to know about all these things. However, even with the great training and resources available, suicide still plagues the military. Is it because soldiers are hearing the information but not actually applying it? That's what we often suspect.

That's what is also suspected on the civilian side of life. We know schools, churches, parachurch groups, and health organizations are stocked with resources and people willing to help. However, there are still people taking their own life every day. Over 38,000 people succeed in America per year and over 1 million attempt suicide each year, and the number is climbing.

Why aren't people utilizing resources? Why aren't people applying their knowledge in getting help for their friends and loved ones? Why is there a lot of talk but no action?

As a Christ-follower, I believe it all comes down to the answers in the 2 questions above. You see, it is true that people aren't utilizing resources and applying their knowledge. In many soldiers' cases, they aren't using their training. However, the reason they aren't doing anything is not because they're afraid, forgetful, or stupid. Its because they don't believe they need to do anything.

If you believe suicide is okay in some instances (pick and choose whatever scenario you want), and you believe that people have the right to do it, then why would you practice any form of intervention? What gives you the right to step in?

The root of this tragic epidemic is completely spiritual. Its consistent with our culture's view on life in general. Just last month a Salon.com writer claimed that she didn't care about the whole "life begins at conception" debate in regards to abortion. Regardless of that fact she wrote that the life of an unborn child is still one

"worth sacrificing". And by sacrificing, she meant if its inconvenient to the mother. (Check out Al Mohler's response to the article, as well as a link to the original article here: http://www.albertmohler.com/2013/02/01/so-what-if-abortion-ends-a-life-rare-candor-from-the-culture-of-death/
)

Mohler so aptly labels the thinking as the "culture of death". He's absolutely right. Our culture is a culture of death! No wonder suicide rates are skyrocketing. The training and resources may be wonderful, but if people never plan to use them, then we're looking at the problem all wrong!

There's a huge problem when we don't view life the way the Creator views life. In Genesis 1:26-28, we see that humans are created to be God's masterpiece, given the task of managing all the resources and living things on the earth. In Genesis 2:7, we read that God "breaths" life into man. Besides looking at all the scriptures where God says, "Do not murder", we can understand from scripture that life is given to us by God and we have NO right to take it, because it belongs to Him. Furthermore, Jesus came so that we could have NEW life, abundant life. The dying to self is a spiritual death, not a physical one. Our physical bodies are instruments in which to live abundantly as a new creation, bringing glory to God and building the Kingdom.

The thinking of our culture has been powerful misguided by the hand of our enemy, who is the author of sin and death. It should make total sense that we see suicide rates climbing. Not that we should be comfortable living with this norm. However, it shouldn't surprise us. It should remind us that we have a powerful enemy. His chief end is our destruction.

Death has only been defeated by Christ. In Him, is our answer. Instead of a right to destroy ourselves, in Christ we find a gift of life. May our eyes be totally fixed on Him. You wanna solve the suicide problem? Point people to Christ!

My daughter and I have a goofy obsession that we share. We love playing with new iPad apps. Many mornings we're the first two awake in the house. While I'm sipping a cup of coffee and crunching on some cereal, I play around with new apps. I download them, delete the lame ones, and test them out with my little girl. Its what I do in lieu of reading a newspaper (there's an app for the news anyway!)

A couple of weeks ago, I downloaded the Ghostbusters free game app. As soon as the app loaded, the Ghostbusters song fired up, and feelings of nostaglia circa 1984 shot through my brain taking me back to my 5-year-old self. Ironically, my girl is also 5. So as she began asking questions about Ghostbusters, inquiring mostly about what it was, I found myself introducing it to her at the same age I was introduced to it.

Besides the Marshmallow Man and Slimer, the most memorable thing about the movies is the catchy song. "Who ya gonna call? GHOST-BUSTERS!!!" I explained to my daughter that people called these guys called the Ghostbusters any time they came in contact with a ghost. Naturally, people would call them in a panic, because that's what people do when they see ghosts.

Last week, I was reading through scripture and something struck a chord with me as I read Psalm 86:7. It says, "In the day of my trouble I call upon you, for you answer me". It was not so much a surprise from scripture being that God had revealed this truth of Himself to me many years ago. It was more the reminder of how great and powerful a statement this verse describes, and its truth for myself and others.

First, what great confidence David has as he recognizes that God will answer him when he calls in a time of trouble. Secondly, what an important truth we need to express to others!

I think as Christ-followers its easy to think negatively about this verse applying to others, because we often see people who have slipped away from Godliness come rushing back to him when times go bad. Our wrong thinking is in assuming that God has a point in which he turns off the phone. As if God gives us only a certain amount of chances and then he eventually slams the door short. I am in no way insinuating that God is going to give people a second chance after death if they walked away from Him their whole lives with unrepentant hearts.

What I'm saying is that God is very much the father Jesus describes in the Parable of the Prodigal Son. He awaits to receive us with arms open wide. We should always be ready to call upon Him and tell others to call upon Him. Its often in those moments of panic that people see God work for the first time and begin to rightly pursue Him.

As I was telling my girl about calling the Ghostbusters, I realized how important it was that I communicate a much greater story and truth to her about calling God. I want her to know that as she faces the troubles of this world, that her connection needs to be with God. He will always be there to answer her. In my position, as a dad and a missionary to soldiers, I make claim that I am always available to answer the call to serve. But honestly, there are times when I get that call and its hard to give good effort. I'm human. Luckily, God is not. He's God. He is definitively always available to answer the call. Let that give you great confidence and joy today!

A St. Louis pastor decided to scribble on her Applebees dinner bill, "I give God 10%. Why do you get 18?". Not only that, she marked out the tip line and wrote in a big fat "0". To make this story even more hideous, the Applebees waitress who received the note on this Pastor's check posted it online. It has since gone viral. The Pastor caught wind that her note was plastered for all the world to see, went down to Applebees and complained. Applebees, in turn, fired the waitress.

Let me get this straight. First of all, a Pastor, decided it would be a wise move to stiff a waitress, and further brag about how she gives to God in hopes that what? This young woman would see the love of Christ and at the same time grasp an understanding of how expensive it is for customers who go to dinner and have to pay 18% gratuity? Secondly, this pastor thought it would also be a good idea to complain to Applebees and get this waitress fired?

As a Christ-follower, who treasures the truth of God's Word, when I see something like this I can't help but label this pastor a "cultural Christian". As Jesus and Isaiah so poignantly put it, "These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me". (Matthew 15:8) The difference between cultural Christians and actual Christ-followers is lip service vs. selfless service.

When I was in seminary, my wife and I joined another couple for lunch after church at a local restaurant one Sunday. When the waitress arrived to our table, she sort of plopped her arms down with a sigh. I asked her how her day was going. She replied, "Not good. Its Sunday." I then asked her if Sunday was the toughest day to wait tables out of all the days of the week. She said that it most definitely was. When I asked "why", she replied, "because all of the church goers are so demanding and mean". She went on to say that out of all her customers, the people all dressed up straight out of Sunday church were the rudest and absolute worst customers to wait on.

I was disappointed, but not surprised. This is sort of the same feeling I had when I came across this most recent story. As I was reading through the first half of James 2 this week, I was reminded of how important it is to reign in pride, stereotypes, and prejudice. James retorts, "how can you claim to have faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ if you favor some people over others?" (James 2:1) The actions of this pastor and the many rude church-going restaurant patrons prove that in their minds, they regard themselves as better somehow. Maybe its in view of the position, seeing that a waitress is not a highly valued job. Perhaps its also a dangerous practice of believing that one is better than someone else because of their self-proclaimed adherence and relationship to God.

Either way, its heartbreaking and disgusting. I pray in my own life that I constantly look for ways that I can above and beyond serve others and love them like Jesus. Maybe you're one of the "jerky Christians" that do nothing but tip poorly, complain, and act obnoxious at restaurants. Take a lesson from the Scripture you claim. "The Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many." (Matthew 20:28)

Lance Armstrong admitted he cheated. Lance Armstrong is also credited with helping many who have battled cancer and obesity through his organization Livestrong. So should we give him a free pass or a simple slap on the hand? Is he a modern day Robin Hood?

I hear the debates on radio and television, all of them centering around Lance's use of performance enhancing drugs and his shady character. In the midst of the discussion, the topic of whether or not we should forgive Lance Armstrong has come up quite a bit. The answers you get are interesting. Many say we should. After all, his philanthrophy saved lives. Many say we shouldn't. He's used and stepped on many people to get where he is today, besides the fact that he lied and cheated.

I say we should forgive. As believers, its not an option. However, a great takeaway that needs to be seen in all of this doesn't exactly center around Lance's drug use or character, it centers around his priority. Further, it centers around the people that we lift up as heroes. We know our culture can be bad about elevating individuals with poor character and a complete disregard for morals. Christians are usually the first to point those people out. I believe solid Christ-followers are many times too also deceived. The enemy is crafty in how he does this, and I would suggest that this is one of his greatest weapons in weakening and tearing down the church.

We know that actions speak louder than words, but what happens when someone displays actions that completely contradict? Or worse yet, what happens when someone displays "good" actions with a hideous and dirty inner motivation? What I'm talking about is often in the form of philanthrophy, politics, and giving. Just because someone gives a lot of money or is seen doing philanthrophy/ministry doesn't mean they are worthy of being put on the pedastal of hero. It doesn't mean they get a free pass.

Too often, people do "good" things because those "good" things get them noticed. The "giving" really isn't giving at all, its self-centered glory seeking. I believe the biggest issue with Lance Armstrong is that all he's ever truly cared about is himself. His name is his biggest priority. All he has ever sought to do is make his name great. Its all about him. Don't agree with me? What's his organization called again?.....Oh yeah, Live-STRONG! Sometimes its all in a name. The evidence is there. However, Lance isn't the only one. Our churches are filled with individuals, many times even pastors, who receive praise and hero status but on the wretched inside...its ugly. Yet, the enemy pulls the wool over our eyes. And sadly, we idolize, follow, and allow ourselves to be influenced by these people.

The reason I share all of this is ultimately to remind us that God is the only one worthy to have His named praised. That doesn't mean we can uplight, encourage, and brag on each other. However, we do have to be careful about who we allow ourselves to be influenced by. We do have to be ever so reminded that God is in the business of making His name great. He will destroy and break those who seek their own glory. Lance Armstrong is a perfect example. My prayer is that his humility is genuine in the fact that he's not so much embarrassed that his secrets are out, but that he realizes there is more to life than trying to make yourself look great.

This is not going to be your normal gun-control issue blog post. In fact, I'm not going to go out of my way to even talk about my view on gun control. That's not the point of this. Besides, chances are, you're smart.....you can probably tell where I stand by the time you finish reading. What's important right now is not where I stand, but where we all stand. Its where we all stand when it comes to being smart, human responsibility, and looking at a problem (i.e. people dying by the hand of sadistic crazies with guns) and thoughtfully searching for real answers, not a personal or political agenda. Frankly, when it comes down to tragic events, like the one at Sandy Hook, our politics should be immediately set aside and our focus should be on compassionately caring for each other.

Some would argue that a part of that compassion is getting stricter laws on guns or banning them all together. Some would argue that a part of that compassion is telling "them" that's what happens when we take God out of our schools. I think both of those responses are hideous. It sickens me to hear media types immediately focus on pushing a political agenda in the midst of a tragedy. The fact that someone would use a horrid scene to persuade others to join their bandwagon should be a crime in itself. That type of response shows no love and concern for others, only a desire to will others to think like yourself.

As a Christ follower, I believe the answer in all tragedy is Christ. How do I respond and give that answer? I believe by doing what Christ would do. Its as simple as that. Having a genuine love and compassion for others will be evident in my action and response. While I want others to know the life transforming joy and freedom in Christ, I also recognize the spiritual pitfall that is a tragic shooting. There are much larger forces at war here. Its not about me getting my conservative political agenda met or making new converts. Its about me loving and caring for those who are hurt. By my actions, love, and genuine conversation may I present Christ, BOLDLY. God, through His sovereign grace and will, may He bring about salvation, peace, and knowledge of the truth.

Anyways, I could linger on those points all day. I could also linger on the fact that we constantly search for answers in all the wrong sources. We have such a difficulty in blaming an individual for committing an atrocious act. There has to be motive or blame that feeds this barbaric behavior, so we think. In this case, guns are part of the blame. The mother of this killer is even to blame. How about the blame being placed squarely where it belongs? On the individual who did it.

Yet, guns seem to be getting all the press. Instead of believing that someone could be demonically influenced to do something this awful, we blame the tool of the killer. "If only he didn't have access to these guns. A tragedy could have been prevented." Tell that to all the families who lost loved ones in 9-11. The tools of the enemy weren't guns. They were airplanes and boxcutters. How about instead of getting "fired up" about guns, we turn our eyes to truth instead of the opinions of biased media. The truth is, human beings are killing each other, and its not just with guns. In fact, guns are a small piece of the pie.

According to MADD (Mother's Against Drunk Driving), 27 people die EACH DAY because of drunk driving. That's the same amount of people that died that day in Newtown, Connecticut. How come we aren't more outraged about drunk driving? Where is the media coverage on alcohol control? The numbers a thousand times worse. But for some reason, it doesn't lead to the type of heated debates we're seeing right now. Our leaders in Washington are talking guns, not booze.

The point is, our focus is all wrong. Again, alcohol (like guns) may contribute to the problem, but it is still an individual's bad decision that causes the tragic incident. The blame is on people. When we take our finger off of that, its like Clark Griswald searching through tiny Christmas lights to get his house lit up when the solution is all about the light switch being turned on. We spin our wheels. We get into debates. We jump on bandwagons without really thinking. We get completely caught up in the wrong things. Worse off, we don't become a part of the solution.

To my fellow Christ-followers, I'm convinced that my response needs to shadow that of Christ's. Showing and declaring His love is more important than guns, alcohol, or causes.

To my fellow Americans, stop and just think a minute. We all know that if we jump, gravity is going to pull us down. Our choices have consequences. Our actions have reactions. Stop pointing the finger at the instrument and start putting it on the people.

After taking a much needed break away from blogging over the last several months, I've decided that's its time to come back. I needed the rest and time to focus on other important things. I look forward to being back on this blog, writing what's on my heart and hopefully inspiring others to think, encouraging others to love, giving others a chance to laugh, and challenging myself to be the man God has called me to be.

I came across a post that I wrote 2 years ago. The summer of 2010 was a tough summer. Little did I know that the next 2 years would be even tougher. However, in the midst of what has literally been the toughest years of my life, God has shown me priceless truths. I share this old post with you, which shares events from 2010....but I share it because the truth of God's reshaping still holds true in my life this day. May it be an encouragement of the reshaping God is doing in your life today!

from July 2010

The blog has been quiet over the past couple of weeks, and for good reasons. The last 3 weeks have included camp, a mission trip to Puerto Rico, and a visit from old friends. At the same time, its included some major personal challenges and emotional stretching.

Its been a whirlwind of activity, but a period in my life that I will not soon forget. God is reshaping me. I have found myself in the midst of James 1. A passage that has been so near and dear to my heart since I was 15 years old has been the source of my joy and strength this month.

A couple of weeks before camp, excitement filled our home when we found out that Stephanie was pregnant. The day we left for camp, we learned that she had a miscarriage. We weren't very far along but that didn't keep it from being a crushing blow. I spent the day before we left for camp in a hospital room with my wife, holding her hand and holding back tears because I wanted to be strong for her. She felt defeated and scared. I felt the same. It was one of those days that make you tired of life. We didn't know anything for sure, until we got the phone call the next day confirming the miscarriage.

A miscarriage is something I wouldn't wish on a worst enemy. I can't imagine the difficulty it would be in losing a baby further along. I thank God that it was early in the pregnancy, but at the same time my heart drops for my wife and for that precious life that I will not meet perhaps until heaven.

It was strange. On one hand, I just wanted to stay with my wife and daughter and do nothing but hold them in my arms, but on the other hand, I had big expectations for what God was going to do at camp and I felt that I needed to be there, witnessing His work. God was right. Fortunately, my family came to camp and it provided a healthy distraction for us. However, even in the midst of that difficult moment in our little family's history, I had an unexplainable joy. A joy that I believe can only be explained through God. A joy that James 1 encourages.

2010 has been a difficult year. Its been a roller coaster of emotion. There have been so many challenges, defeats, and frustrations. At the same time, God still continue to gives me joy. This has perhaps been the hardest year of my life in the last decade, but I haven't felt sorry for myself. I haven't stayed down. I continue to look up. I continue to be relatively joyful and happy. I can't explain it, but I know its God, and I praise Him for it.

I shared the struggle with our group that went to Puerto Rico. I hesitated in even sharing, because I didn't want people to feel sorry for me. I didn't want people to make a big deal about it, even though it is a big deal. Honestly, it was difficult to get up early and conjure up the energy to leave for Puerto Rico. The last thing I wanted to do was be away from my family. I missed them dearly while I was gone, but at the same time, while we were there, there was no place that I would have rather been. God was at work, not only in my life, but in the life of the people in Cayey, in the life of our students, and in the life of our adults. I had so much joy in seeing God work. Like with camp, I was so encouraged to see life coming back into our student ministry.

I read through Mark over the last month. I think it may be my new favorite gospel. What stood out to me so much was the power of Christ. I have been so overwhelmed with the conviction that my expectations are too low for God. The God who made me, saved me, and gives me joy in the midst of the fire of life is the God that I serve. Why shouldn't I expect Him to do something unbelievable every day?

Through my experiences and what God has been teaching me in His Word, I know that I will never be the same. God is in the process of reshaping me and I couldn't be more thrilled. I knew this year would be tough. God honestly prepared my heart for that at the end of last year. He continues to prepare my heart for more tough things to come. I know I'll have to face them, and some days will be really hard. However, I walk towards those days unafraid. I am completely at peace and facing every day with an unexplainable joy.

I share all this with you to let you know what God has been doing in my life the past couple of weeks. However, I also share it with you to gain no sympathy for myself, but to encourage you to have confident expectations in our God. Our God is bigger than our problems. In fact, He's using them to grow us. Our God is the source of joy and satisfaction. In Him, you'll find it. I share this especially for my brothers and sisters who are struggling right now. God can and will give you joy and strength. He will obliterate your low expectations. God will rock your world in a good way, so that you will be able to rock this world more effectively for His Kingdom.

Let me get this straight. A privately owned company has a president who expresses his personal views, values, and opinions in an interview, and all of a sudden Chick-fil-A is being compared to the likes of hatemongers?

Am I missing something?

Last time I checked, just because somebody has an opinion different than yours doesn't mean that they're hateful. If someone went and saw the Dark Knight Rises and said they didn't like it, I wouldn't accuse them of hating me because I liked it. Its funny how we fight for the rights of the First Amendment, but only when the expression fits our beliefs. We're at the point of where we are so "PC" that if someone disagrees with our opinion on anything we take it personally, like we're being attacked. And I'm not just talking about the homosexual community, who is at the heart of this current controversy. I'm talking about most communities in America, including the Christian community!

I would never advocate actual hate towards people. When someone crosses the line of stating their convictions, beliefs, or values to expressing hatred and anger towards any person, I find that shameful and un-Christlike (i.e. Westboro Baptist Church). At the same time, those who verbally express such protests have every right according to our First Amendment. I can't deny that.

What's so baffling about the whole Chick-fil-A "controversy" is that someone stated their values with no intention of showing hate or discrimination in their personal life or the way their business serves its customers, and the response has been "hate-filled" from the ones who disagree with the opinions expressed by Dan Cathy (Chick-fil-A President).

So those accusing Cathy of hateful actions, are responding with hate. From my vantage point, I see nothing hateful with Cathy's expression, but I see much hate in some of the response to it. Not only do I see hate in response, I see a complete regard for common sense and intelligent thinking.

The response of the mayors of cities like Boston and Chicago prove this point. They're saying there's no room for businesses like Chick-fil-A in their cities. Reverse this....imagine if a conservative town's mayor said there was no room for businesses like Starbucks or Apple because their ownership supports gay rights. The shame would be spun over on that mayor, not the businesses.

Boston's Mayor, Thomas Menino, had some strong words for Chick-fil-A in his attempt to drive the business away from his city. In the process, he received much criticism. In his own defense he said, "But I have feelings . . . I have my First Amendment rights also. I’m expressing them."
Interesting that he admits he has his "First Amendment rights also". So he can criticize a business owner for using First Amendment rights and say there's no place for that in his city, while simultaneously expressing his First Amendment rights? That makes absolutely NO SENSE. Its complete hypocrisy. Its hate.

I know America's becoming a more "tolerant" nation, but tolerance of pure hypocrisy? That's what's being done here. The hate is clear in this latest controversy. Its coming from the Chick-fil-A protestors, not from Chick-fil-A.

The new Dark Knight hits theaters at midnight Friday! As my heart intermingles with thoughts of elation of seeing the flick and feeling bittersweet at the end of what should be a great triology, I can't help but think about the spiritual side of things. After all, that's who I am. I'm a disciple of Christ. This is what I do!

In the first installment, Batman Begins, a memorable line is shared by Bruce Wayne's love interest, Rachel Dawes and the Dark Knight himself. Both quote the line at crucial points in the film.

The quote goes,
"Its not what you are underneath, its what you do that defines you."

Honestly, I think those words can sum up some deep spiritual truth. We often live life with good intentions of being someone honorable, respectable, and doing good and serving others. However, its not who we picture ourselves to be (what's underneath), its what others see. Basically, its what you do that defines you.

Now, as a believer, I can say that ultimately its Christ who defines me. Through His shed blood I have access to God and eternal life. I am a saint in the eyes of God. So technically, its not about what I do. Its about what Christ did. However, in the eyes of humanity, actions speak louder than our words and motives. Perhaps that's why James encourages us to be doers of the word and not hearers only. By being a doer, others see Christ. So if Christ defines you, its important to show the true Christ to the world. When we don't DO, yet still claim Christ, an unbelieving world is unfazed. My encouragement is to not hide Christ underneath, but by your actions show His love to the world!

Former Presidents, Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, and James Monroe all died on July 4th. Ironically, both Jefferson and Adams died on the exact same day, July 4, 1826. This also happened to be the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, a document that Adams and Jefferson had an integral part in designing.

On July 4th, we celebrate our Independence as a country by blowing stuff up, eating a lot, and singing patriotic songs. I think most Americans would be honest to say that a little hair stands up on the neck every 4th just thinking about the honor it is to live in the United States. However, I wonder how much appreciation most really have for those who died so that July 4th could be possible?

Those who have close connections to military or have served in wars have a much easier time not taking freedom for granted. They've witnessed sacrifice. But more than that, the battles have not only been fought in the last 11 years, battles were fought before July 4, 1776 and consistently after until the present day. While the celebration of the 4th bring happiness to so many, it has brought clouds of darkness and bitterness to others.

Either way, its a reminder of the expensive price tag that freedom carries. I love freedom. I'm thankful for it as an American, and I'm thankful for it as a Jesus follower. The cost for spiritual freedom was also not cheap. A single man died for that cause. That's why every day is a celebration of Jesus.

In regards to freedom, physically and spiritually, how are we to act? Did people fight wars and die for the cause so that generations would take full advantage of every opportunity that freedom has to offer to live lives pleasing to themselves? Honestly, I believe that type of thinking makes the price seem like a ripoff. Freedom isn't about taking advantage of everything so that you can create the best life for yourself. Freedom is about having the opportunity to live for something greater than yourself. Its living for others. Its living for God. Some may be tempted to view this as slavery. However, slavery is having no choice to cater to the master's needs. Freedom is being able to make the choice to serve others and serve God so that all can have joy in living free. Freedom is fighting for the cause, not reaping the benefits of the cause. Freedom is pursuing the Kingdom, not just reaping the benefits of the Kingdom. After all, it doesn't make sense that you would pursue one thing, and simply reap the benefits of something completely opposite.

1 Peter 2:16 says, "Live as people who are free, not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil, but living as servants of God."
I mean, we've already got rockin' guitar solos, fog machines, and light shows....why not tasing?

Bacon, the new Calvinism?

Hysteria about the identity of the Antichrist has been around for generations. As far back as Ronald Reagan, I can remember people guessing and wondering if our current president was the Antichrist. Of course, the thought of one all powerful Antichrist comes from Revelation 13. This also includes the discourse on the False Prophet.

I would encourage believers to shift their thinking. As the hysteria of "2012/end of the world" grows more intense, I think a better use of time would be to stop guessing the identity of a major Antichrist, and be careful to steer clear of antichrists and false prophets who run rampant among our culture every day.

1 John 2:18 says, "Children, it is the last hour, and as you have heard that antichrist is coming, so now many antichrists have come. Therefore we know that it is the last hour."

Truthfully, we must always be on guard as believers to weigh what we see and hear with scripture. Its important for us to examine the fruit of one another's lives. Not one of us is immune to getting polluted with false prophecy. Its Christ's work in us that keeps us in check!

Anybody See Doc Today?

The first moment that I found out my wife was pregnant with our firstborn, a compassion overwhelmed my heart that I can't explain outside of God. It is the Holy Spirit of the Living God who filled my heart with a new beat for a being that had yet to be born. Now, having two young children, I have such a compassion for them. What I mean by compassion is that I want to meet their every need, help them overcome any trouble, and want them to have joy in all circumstances.

These characteristics are not naturally built inside of me. Its God at work! God makes good fathers, good fathers. The fathers who are labeled bad are those who navigate life without Christ. There has never been a transformation. The flesh is gratifying its desires. Thus, it makes sense that there is a lack of compassion. The flesh mostly has compassion for itself.

I'm thankful for an earthly father, who walks in the Spirit. He has shown compassion to me my whole life. Today I will call him and wish him a Happy Father's Day! However, its important for me to also thank my Heavenly Father, because He is the one who made my father a great father! He has shown me compassion. He wants to meet my every need, help me overcome trouble, and give me joy in all circumstances!

As a father shows compassion to his children,
so the Lord shows compassion to those who fear him.

After seeing a few summer movies to kick off another wonderful movie season, I decided to re-evaluate my movie Top 10 list. I've added a few Christopher Nolan flicks on the Top 10 over the last few years, but other than that, it hasn't changed too much over the past decade!

NUMBER 10

A Perfect World (1993)

One of the most missed and underrated movies of all time! Chances are, you haven't seen it. Go get this movie and watch it!

NUMBER 9

National Lampoon's Vacation (1983)

The only comedy to make my Top 10. Its just pure greatness! Chevy Chase=genius. I can watch this movie every time its on television.
