Symptoms and Relief of Menopause

There are a number of symptoms that are associated with the onset of menopause. Various treatments are now available to help alleviate those symptoms.

Menopause is the condition in which the reproductive period in a female’s life has come to a close. Normally, throughout the lifespan of a female, ovaries specialize in producing an egg each month. This is what causes menstruation in the woman. In addition to this, the ovaries play an active role in the production of important hormones in the female body. This includes the hormone of progesterone and that which is called estrogen. When changes begin to take place that result in the lack of menstruation and the productivity of the female hormones are thereby affected, this is what is referred to as “menopause”.

There are a number of symptoms that are associated with the onset of menopause. Nearly all women who are approaching menopause, or experiencing menopause, will experience common symptoms associated with this change in life. Some of the symptoms of menopause include:

•	Many women will experience menstrual cycles that are irregular, or complete cessation of the menstrual cycle.

•	Hot flashes are extremely common when a female at the onset of menopause.

•	A common complaint is the experiencing of a variety of moods (mood swings), which include quick irritability when menopause begins.

•	Loss of libido is common among females in menopause.

•	Many women may discover that they have complications sleeping. This is quite often the result of night sweats, another common symptom - however, it can also be related to the physiological changes that the body is experiencing.

•	Migraines and other types of pain are quite common during menopause.

As you can see, there are a number of symptoms that are common to the onset of menopause. The list above contains only a few of the symptoms that can be experienced during this time in life. While menopause is normal, and there is no treatment available to stop this from occurring, there are a number of treatments that can help in soothing the many symptoms that are common to this condition.

One of the most common treatments for menopause is the prescription of hormone replacements. This type of menopause treatment focuses on replenishing the hormones that are normally no longer produced once the body starts to process this change in life. There are many benefits associated with this form of treatment. The ultimate benefit is that it helps to alleviate the symptoms that are associated with menopause. It may also reduce the risk of heart disease and osteoporosis.

The risks that are associated with hormone replacement drug treatment include:

•	Increased opportunity for stroke

•	Experiencing clotting of the blood

•	Increased chance of developing uterine cancer

•	The possibility of developing breast cancer is increased

There are a number of natural treatments for menopause. These have proven effective for millions of women. Increasing the amount of natural calcium can help soothe the symptoms of menopause. Black Cohosh Root has also been deemed as an appropriate treatment. These natural treatments taken in conjunction with a healthy lifestyle that includes diet and exercise can greatly benefit those that are experiencing menopause.

Whatever the symptoms one happens to experience, it is advisable to seek competent medical advice when searching for an appropriate remedy, whether it be hormonal replacement therapy or one of the many natural supplements now available.

Colin Albert oversees the Euphoria for Women website. The web site provides information on female sexuality and features a natural product that acts as a female herbal enhancer, for women experiencing loss of sexual libido as a result of menopause.

Menopause Diet Tips To Help Manage Symptoms

Natural perimenopause treatments don’t just cover supplements - a menopause diet can really contribute to symptom relief. From mood swings, to hot flushes and depression, find out more here.

There are any number of supplements and treatments advertised as the answer to a menopausal woman’s prayers. You could spend a lot of time and money trying them all. Some do work but the best way to help menopausal symptoms is to eat a balanced diet.

WHAT SHOULD I EAT?

Try and include something from each food group to get your diet balanced. Aim to eat grains, carbohydrates, proteins (and protein alternatives), dairy products, fats and a lot of fruit and vegetables. Try to take it easy on fats, carbohydrates and proteins.

Aim to eat three meals a day - especially if you have been in the habit of skipping breakfast. Have a small, nutritious snack between meals, to keep your energy levels up. To keep your weight at a healthy level, check your portion sizes - eat on a smaller plate if it helps! Have an occasional treat - you’re only human and it will keep you focused on your new eating plan…but keep them occasional!

HOW YOU CAN USE FOOD TO MANAGE SYMPTOMS

You may be experiencing hot flashes, swings in your mood and be putting on weight. These can all be helped by eating right. Let’s look at what you can do to help these symptoms.

HOT FLASHES

Along with night sweats, these are probably the menopause symptoms that women hate most. Waking up several times at night in a pool of sweat is not fun. Hot flashes can make you feel unwell, be embarrassing at work, make it difficult to get to sleep, and can drive you nuts.

Try and identify what triggers your hot flashes. For many women, these are coffee, tea, alcohol and spicy food. Try and reduce your intake of these. Increasing the amount of water you drink can really help. Aim for at least 8 glasses each day - it’s great for your skin too!

Try to eat foods containing phytoestrogens. These are plant estrogen-like compounds that can help a lot of your symptoms. You’ll find them in beans, legumes, seaweed, yams, apples, potatoes and carrots. Soy is a high source of them.

Caution: if you are a breast cancer survivor and your tumor was estrogen positive, I’m afraid you’ll have to give the phytoestrogens a miss. Ironically, tamoxifen given to estrogen positive breast cancer ladies can cause horrible hot flushes. But anything containing estrogen must be avoided.

MOOD SWINGS

During menopause, hormones fluctuate and this can cause mood swings and even depression. People who are depressed often have a low level of serotonin in their brain. Eating carbohydrates can help to bring up your serotonin levels and ease the depression. Go for bagels, whole grain breads and cereals. And Omega 3 essential fatty acids such as those found in salmon, are great for alleviating depression.

WEIGHT GAIN

As estrogen levels go down during the menopause, fat in the body redistributes itself, unfortunately settling around the stomach. Muscle mass also decreases, which slows down your metabolism and can result in your weight going up. Cut down your fat intake and aim to avoid saturated fats. Broil and grill food instead of frying and if you do fry, use a little olive oil. If you are retaining water, drinking water will help to flush out your system and may help to increase your metabolism. And nothing boosts your metabolism like exercise!

After menopause, women are more at risk from heart disease. Eat oily fish, rich in Omega-3, to help your circulation. Reduce saturated fats and swap processed flour for whole grain.

To guard against thinning bones, aim to have between 1200 and 1500mg of calcium each day. Eat low fat yogurt, cheese, sardines and leafy green vegetables. Go easy on caffeine, as it can prevent the body from properly absorbing calcium.

Does Menopause Cause Weight Gain?

This article looks at the issue of menopause and weight gain, a problem suffered by many women during this time. The different factors that contribute to this are discussed, as well as the link between weight gain at this time and breast cancer.

The menopause is a life change experienced by women aged around 50 years old, although it can often occur anytime between the ages of 40 and 55. Defined as the end of the last menstrual period, the menopause can bring about a range of symptoms. These include mood swings, excessive perspiration, urinal and vaginal problems, hot flushes, emotional problems, vaginal bleeding, and various other symptoms. Many women also find that they experience weight gain during the menopausal years.

Although many women do experience weight gain when going through menopause, the results of various studies have shown that it is not the menopause itself that causes weight gain but the various bodily and lifestyle changes that are brought about as a result of the change of life. This includes factors such as reduced metabolism, lower levels of activity, and stress. For instance, the menopause can catalyze various emotional issues, and this can lead to comfort eating for many, which generally results in weight gain.

In order to combat excessive weight gain during the menopause, women need to make sure that they lead as healthy a lifestyle as possible. This is true both in relation to activity levels, and what they eat.

It is important to remember that the menopause can affect a number of physiological and psychological areas. For example, menopause can affect the function of the thyroid, and an under-active thyroid can result in weight gain. The mood swings and emotional issues that come about as a result of menopause can result in appetite changes and even uncharacteristic comfort eating. Fatigue or depression can lead to a reduction in physical activity.

Weight gain brings about a range of health risks if it puts you at a seriously overweight level. There are indications that weight gain during the menopause could actually increase the risk of breast cancer, although this risk can be reduced by the same amount - or even more - if the weight is lost after menopause.

In order to combat weight gain during menopause it is important to take sensible steps towards maintaining a healthy weight. This means a balanced and sensible diet, which is rich in vitamins and minerals and low in fat and calories. By at least supplying your body with the nutrients it needs, cravings can be better controlled. If your body is under-nourished, the inclination to junk food can be greater.

You should also ensure that you do not let your levels of physical activity slip during peri-menopause. In times of deep emotional flux, this is easy to do. However, if you find you’re having problems with your weight, or stress, exercise really does help. Find exercise or physical activities you really enjoy, and perhaps seek a buddy to work out with. It can be easier to motivate yourself to continue fitness activities with the support of a friend.

Beat Male Menopause: Maximizing Manhood By A Healthy Lifestyle

External factors can contribute to male menopause symptoms. Overcome male menopause by changing your attitude and giving a positive outlook in life.

As men get older, he starts to get apprehensive and anxious of what the future may brings. He fears for his health, his life and generally, what will happen to him? He tends to be a little more paranoid over those silly stuffs. Because of these, he busy himself with a lot of things just to preoccupy his mind and refuse to acknowledge the hormonal and emotional changes he is experiencing. Some call it mid-life crisis. But andropause or male menopause is very much closer to the truth.

Most distinguish symptoms of male menopause is decrease of virility level and diminishing vitality. These are all because of the reduction of male hormones. Usually, such condition occurs by the age of 45-55, but prior to andropause, men experience a mid-life crisis. Dr. Malcolm Carruthers authored a book with the title, Maximizing Manhood: Beating Male Menopause. He explained in the book the occurrence and difference of these two things often misinterpreted as the other: andropause and mid-life crisis.

These two psychological and biological conditions are distinct from each other, yet, people find it hard to determine which is which. Although the two is closely related since mid-life crisis comes before andropause, around 35-45 years old. However, this is not always the case. Andropause may come earlier depending on the person and how he reacts to mid-life crisis. Or on the contrary, male menopause may come later if he lives a healthy lifestyle.

Andropause is also indicated in other manners like depression, decrease sex drives, fatigue, and irritable. These may also be considered as normal part of aging, and there are ways to ease the discomfort during this period in a man’s life. Andropause has somewhat become a medical concern rather than a normal stage in life’s cycle. For this reason, medical science has come with solutions to this dilemma.

TRT or testosterone replacement therapy came to exist for this predicament. TRT is available in capsule forms, hormone patch, implant or creams. Some reports attested to pills efficiency in relieving symptoms of andropause, but this varies from man to man. If neither works, pellet implant is an option. The testosterone pellets are surgically implanted beneath the buttocks skin. Determine which method will work best to your advantage depending on how your body will react. Medical advice must be acknowledged for it is for your own good.

The male menopausal stage is inevitable but it can be beaten. How? According to Dr. Carruther’s study, external factors may affect and alter the decrease of testosterone level in men. So by this, it is easy to determine how to prevent such factors, thus, reducing the risk of testosterone declination. Naturally, men with active and healthy lifestyles have lesser risk of early andropause and their testosterone level decreases by only one percent each year by age 40 to 70 years old. The large increase of testosterone levels are recorded commonly on unhealthy lifestyles and poor habits. Stress also triggers the symptoms of male menopause. Physical and psychological stresses as part of cigarettes and alcohol consumptions can very well aggravate symptoms.

To magnify it, it is possible for men to be spared of the effects brought by andropause. For men, this dilemma is devastatingly an insult to their manhood. Staying healthy, keeping a toxin-free active lifestyle from the start will shield you from this afflicting life crisis called male menopause.

The stage of menopause in every woman’s life is a different experience for each one. Even with the same characteristic of having one’s estrogen levels lower and coupled with the cessation of reproductive processes, each individual who undergoes this has a different story to remember and probably tell on how they cope up with it. Many factors come into play with this, among which are perceptions, internal factors, environment, body coping mechanisms, and even both acute and chronic illnesses.

In A Nutshell

When a woman undergoes menopause, the different body systems, as well as the altered feedback mechanisms go through an overhaul as it tries to compensate for the loss of estrogen. The body tries to achieve homeostasis even with something lacking. In the event that there are other internal factors that further complicate things such as an existing sickness or a chronic illness, the imbalance within may further develop and worsen the current health state of the person.

When Diabetes Is Present

Diabetes is a chronic illness common to many people. It may be developed such as Type II diabetes or acquired during fetal development such as Type I diabetes. Both types have one thing in common: that the body is unable to produce enough insulin effect to synthesize the existing sugar in the blood, which therefore increases the overall amount flowing through the body systems.

What To Expect

Menopause and diabetes may work hand in hand in amplifying the negative effects currently present. For one, changes in blood sugar level may be more evident and fluctuating. Since estrogen and progesterone affects the way cells react to insulin, any fluctuations in the levels of the former would also directly affect the way blood sugar is synthesized. A woman having both health statuses may experience abrupt fluctuations.

Infections are also expected to rise because of the added fact that bacteria and yeast are able to invade and enter the vaginal area more easily as there is a decrease in estrogen which protects it from them in the first place. Having diabetes complicates things further by lessening the immune system’s responses to such attacks.

Another thing to consider is having sleeping problems. As this is evident to many women having post menopausal symptoms, the much needed sleep may aggravate the blood sugar regulation as people who lack sleep have a harder time managing their sugar levels.

No Easy Way But Strict Monitoring

These may have to be part of some women for a lifetime and there is no way out. However, those who are about to be in this situation, as well as those who are already in this, it would just be wise to observe proper diet and maintain proper hydration and health practices. It may be unfortunate that therapeutic regimen would have to be administered throughout, but saving one’s self from further complications would definitely be better than not.

How To Tell If You’re Going Through Menopause

Almost three quarters of women who are about to start the transition to menopause notice some kinds of symptoms. Menopause symptoms are a result of changing hormonal levels. This is in preparation for the shutdown of the female reproduction system. As hormone production decreases, most women will start to have symptoms even if their periods haven’t stopped.
Somewhere between their late 30s and early 40s, many women will start to notice the first signs of menopause. This is the time when a woman’s body cuts down on the production of progesterone and estrogen. Perimenopause is the name give to this phase of menopause.
Ovulation becomes sporadic because the ovaries stop releasing eggs. It’s harder for a woman to become pregnant at this time because she becomes less fertile. As well, pregnancy during this time has more risk associated with it.
One of the early symptoms of menopause is an irregular period. The flow will be either considerably lighter or heavier than it has been historically.
Mood swings are also a sign of menopause. You might need to take antidepressant medication to relieve the problem.
As well, women often experience hot flashes. This is like a wave of heat that passes through her body at unexpected times, often while sleeping. Her face will become red and she will break out in a sweat.
Excess abdominal fat and sleeping disorders are also signs of menopause. Exhaustion and depression are often the result of a sleeping disorder, so get the advice of a doctor to manage the problem.
The symptoms become more noticeable throughout the 40s. Some time soon after turning 50, the transition is over. Once a woman has made it through a full year without having a period, she has officially reached menopause. Fifty-one is the typical age when this happens.
Most women will experience symptoms through the entire process of menopause. Unfortunately, some women may suffer with them for the rest of their lives.
Every woman experiences menopause differently. Some will hardly notice that it’s happening. Other women will experience symptoms that interfere with their daily lives.
Visit your doctor if you think you’ve started menopause. They will be able to give you advice on managing your menopausal symptoms. Some of the methods of managing the symptoms include lifestyle changes, pain relievers and hormone therapy.

Early Or Premature Menopause

Menopause is a normal change to every woman’s life. It occurs between 45-55 ages that ends the fertility era of a woman. However, menopause is not a stage necessarily referred to elderly women. Early or premature menopause is more common than most women, fact shows that about 1% of women between the ages of 15 and 45 is affected. Women dealing with infertility in this early age are very frustrated and make it difficult to accept.

Doctors are unable to determine the cause for menopause in younger women. Although there are some laid reasons behind, like Premature Ovarian Failure (POV). Women with POV have ovaries that aren’t functioning properly. Either they stop producing eggs or no longer produce the hormones needed to ovulate. Second, surgical menopause involves the conscious decision of forcing women into menopause for specific health reasons. Menopause can be caused by chemotherapy or radiation cancer treatments. Chemotherapy and radiation kill cancer cells but, unfortunately, they also kill healthy cells. Infection is also linked with premature menopause. Infections such as the mumps and tuberculosis can infect the ovaries, affecting your hormonal balance. Smoking can also lead to early menopause.

Among the first signs of early menopause is the irregularity of the menstrual circle. What was once coming once in a month will not manifest itself two and three times a month. In some cases it will altogether stop for 3-4 months and then start again like nothing happened.

Also women commonly suffer from night sweats, hot flashes, insomnia, headaches, and joint or muscle pain. Body shape changes are also common, causing you to put on weight around the abdomen. Additionally, water retention and menopause commonly go together.

Menopausal women can experience emotional ups and downs, including anxiety, depression, cravings, and forgetfulness. All of these symptoms are triggered by the fluctuation of hormones in the body during menopause.

Unfortunately, there are no menopause cures. Life has to go on. Menopause will eventually happen its just that it happened to you sooner. It is suggested that most women who have undergone early or premature menopause seek out hormone replacement therapy and support network group to help through the difficult times. You may be unprepared for such an immediate entry into menopause and friends, family, and other menopausal women.

Yoga is defined as a traditional mental and physical discipline originating in India. The goal of Yoga is simple, to achieve a healthy lifestyle by disciplining the mind and body. Many traditionalists have found a way to use the practice to help women find relief from menopause. It doesn’t get rid of the problem that comes with the condition, but can help women keep their mind and body on track without losing control and making mistakes that you might regret later on.

Yoga Versus Medical Treatment Methods

There are plenty of medical treatment methods today to help an individual cope with the burdens of this condition. Synthetic drugs and medications are given to patients who want to get rid of sleeping disorders, help them keep their calm and relax during mood swings, alleviate pains, and so on.

The only problem with this method is that it does not help women cope with the signs and symptoms attributed to the condition. In truth, it helps by temporary alleviating the discomfort to make it more bearable and painless as possible.

The use of Yoga with menopause has a simple goal — help a women deal with the burdens by disciplining their mind and body to always be in constant control over their actions. Meditative practices of this traditional method have ways on improving a woman’s control over their emotions, keep track of their mental capabilities and deficiencies, and mold their consciousness to more productive results.

The physical exercise of Yoga can help women with menopause to deal with the effects of hormonal imbalances in their bodies. We can never deny the fact that decline of specific hormones, such as estrogen; can cause aches and pains to appear. The various poses of yoga can help remove these physical pangs while giving you the leisure to relax and put your mind and body at ease.

Applying Yoga

There are two ways to integrate the practice of Yoga into your menopausal life. You can enroll yourself in Yoga classes and join with other women to find relief from their emotional and physical pains. Another method is to practice Yoga at home through instructional materials, like videos and books. Choose whichever fits best with your schedule.

This doesn’t mean that you will be doing Yoga poses for the whole day and forgetting your other responsibilities. You can do Yoga every morning and before you go to bed to help you relax. Try to set some time to practice your creativity, like doing art, music, poetry, cooking, cleaning house, home improvement, or doing your usual work routine. Yoga will only help you relax and help you focus for a healthier and risk-free lifestyle.
