For some of us, it may just not be practical to spend half of our Sunday preparing carefully portioned meals for the rest of the week, or financially feasible to buy all our meals prepackaged in just the right portions. And there are those of us who cringe at the thought of weighing food to achieve &#8216;optimal portion sizes&#8217;. Here are ten real life diet tips for the rest of us.</p>
<p>1. Eating out? Restaurant portions tend to be enormous, and if it&#8217;s on the plate, we tend to eat it. If it&#8217;s possible, order from the kid’s menu, where portions are more reasonably sized.</p>
<p>2. Keep healthy snacks around and easily accessible. A bowl of fruit on the kitchen table, a container of celery or carrot sticks in the refrigerator, or a couple of pop-open cans of fruit salad in your desk at work will help you grab for something healthy when those first hunger pains begin. In other words, you&#8217;ll be more likely to grab something low-calorie and good for you if it&#8217;s easy to eat.</p>
<p>3. Substitute frozen vegetables for canned. Canned veggies tend to be high in sodium, which you don&#8217;t need, and low in real nutrition, which you do. Buy economy size bags with zip closures to make it easy to pour out a single serving for a meal.<br />

4. Buy a vegetable steamer. Steaming is one of the healthiest ways to cook vegetables. The food retains nearly all of its natural nutrients instead of leaching it out into the cooking water. Even better, it makes your veggies taste great &#8211; which means you&#8217;ll be more likely to eat them instead of filling up on fatty foods that pack on weight.</p>
<p>5. Never eat standing up. One of the easiest ways to sabotage your diet is to &#8216;eat without thinking&#8217;. Treat eating with the respect that it deserves. Fix yourself a plate. Sit down and eat properly. You&#8217;ll be less likely to just pop food into your mouth without paying attention.</p>
<p>6. Spread your meals out. When you eat three meals a day, your body tends to store whatever it doesn&#8217;t need right that moment. By adopting a &#8216;grazing&#8217; habit, you&#8217;ll keep your metabolism working throughout the day. Have a small breakfast, a piece of fruit with crackers or toast at mid-morning, a light lunch and an &#8216;after school snack&#8217; mid-afternoon. Just remember that you&#8217;re breaking up the same amount of food into smaller meals, not ADDING more food into your daily diet.</p>
<p>7. Grab a fruit juice or flavored water instead of soda. Soda is nothing but empty calories. No nutrients, lots of sugar. Instead, grab a bottle of 100% fruit juice, or water flavored with a spritz of fruit.</p>
<p>8. Drink water. Even the FDA recommends at least 8 full 8 ounce glasses of water a day to keep your body working right. When you&#8217;re dieting, you should drink even more. It&#8217;s not just that full feeling &#8211; water helps your body digest foods properly and cleans out your system.</p>
<p>9. Can&#8217;t afford a gym membership? Make a pact with friends to exercise together. Make a date at least three times a week to play volleyball, take a walk or spend half an hour doing something active.</p>
<p>10. Skip the potato chips. Fatty snacks fried in hydrogenated oil like potato chips contribute fat and calories and not much else. Instead, grab a handful of dried fruit or a cup of yogurt for the same amount of calories and a lot more nutritional benefit.</p>

<p>To do this, many are watching their diets while also checking with a health care professional for the best strategies. But for many, maintaining a healthy cholesterol level is difficult and often expensive. Prescription treatments for cholesterol can cost several hundred dollars per month, by some estimates.</p>
<p>In response to these concerns, Mosaic Nutraceuticals, a Dallas-based company, has come up with a way to address the cholesterol issue. Wrapped in a soft candy chew, &#8220;Lipotrene,&#8221; Mosaic&#8217;s aid in promoting cholesterol health, is an option for those wanting to control their cholesterol without pills or expensive prescriptions.<br />

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Antioxidants are all the rage today.  And, justifiably so.  Antioxidants help neutralize free radicals which cause cell damage, which ultimately can lead to diseases of the heart and cancer.  It seems everywhere you go its blueberry this and blueberry that.  You have your choice of wild blueberry juice, blueberry-pomegranate juice, blueberry-cranberry juice and so on and so on.</p>
<p>Now, don’t get me wrong.  I love blueberries.  But, in our rush to embrace the latest antioxidant food craze (blueberries, cranberries, pomegranates) we’re ignoring some very high-antioxidant foods that are probably sitting ignored in our cupboards.</p>
<p>“What?”  You ask, “What could possibly be higher in antioxidants than my beloved wild blueberry?”  Well, how about the small red bean?  That’s right, I said “bean.”  The small red bean actually has more antioxidants per serving size than the wild blueberry.  And the red kidney bean and pinto bean have more antioxidants per serving size than a serving of cultivated blueberries.</p>
<p>What other foods are high in antioxidants?  For starters, there are artichoke hearts, blackberries, prunes, pecans, spinach, kale, russet potatoes and plums.  And, no, that’s not a mistake.  Russet potatoes are on the list of foods high in antioxidants.<br />
<span id="more-433"></span><br />
The truth is, there are many common foods high in antioxidants and you should not just restrict yourself to one particular food source.  Why?  Well, have you ever heard the expression, “eat your colors?”  That refers to the fact that foods are in different color “families” containing different types of antioxidants which have different benefits.  For example, the yellow-orange color family of peaches and nectarines help our immune systems.  The purple-red color family of foods (pomegranates, plums, berries) helps reduce inflammation.  It’s important to eat foods from all color groups to reap the full benefits of antioxidants.</p>
<p>The good news is that you can eat healthy foods high in antioxidants (by eating them raw, cooking them, or juicing them yourself) without having to pay a high price for the “flavor of the month” antioxidant juices being peddled in the supermarkets.</p>
<p>So, give your blueberries some company at the dinner table.  Invite some beans, spinach, potatoes and artichoke hearts and enjoy your antioxidants!</p>

No body likes the falling white flakes and the itching scalp. we all try many shampoos and treatments, both natural and chemical to get rid of dandruff. I want to ask many of you who suffer dandruff- how are you sure that you are having dandruff? Unless a doctor diagnosed it as dandruff, how can any one be sure that he/she is suffering dandruff if it is not clearing after many washes? May be you are suffering from something else? Let us look at the other problems that may confuse you.</p>
<p>Dandruff and other scalp problems-</p>
<p>There are many scalp problems that itch and produce scales and white flakes. Psoriasis is one of the tough ones. Unless you get it diagnosed and get treated it will not go away. Many cosmetic applications may cause allergic dermatitis or irritant contact dermatitis. Atopic dermatitis or commonly called eczema can also appear on the scalp. Seborrheic dermatitis is one of the common scalp problems that mimic dandruff.<br />

What is dandruff?</p>
<p>In dandruff what we see as white flakes are skin cells. Our skin regenerates itself every month. The new cells travel from the bottom of the skin layer to the top in a month and the dead cells are shed. These are so microscopic and small in quantity that we don&#8217;t notice this shedding of cells. In dandruff this shedding increases. That is how these dead cells with skin oils form white flakes and we can see them.</p>
<p>Dandruff and diagnosis-</p>
<p>If you are not able to get rid of dandruff after trying many formulas, it is time that you visit a doctor and get the proper diagnosis done. Once you are sure that it is dandruff, you can take proper measures and get a shiny scalp.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>One of the most crucial features to consider when purchasing an elliptical trainer is the warranty.  <strong>The extent of the warranty speaks volumes as to the quality and the durability of the machine.</strong></p>
<p>There is a relative new player in the elliptical trainer industry, Sole Fitness.  They are defining their niche by offering one of the most extensive warranties available at any price range.  This includes <strong>5 year coverage on parts and electronics, and 2 year labor.</strong> (Excludes the E25)</p>
<p>Why is the warranty so important when purchasing fitness equipment?  First, it reduces your liability if the machine breaks down.  Replacing parts and hiring someone to service your elliptical trainer can be very costly.  Second, the warranty generally reflects the quality of the machine.</p>
<p>When you think about it, a warranty is based on simple economics. If an elliptical trainer is built to last then the manufacturer can offer a generous warranty.  On the other hand, if the machine is of questionable quality, it would be cost prohibitive to support it with a lengthy warranty.  The company would go broke with service costs.</p>
<p>Why do you think cheap elliptical trainers come with a 90 day parts and labor warranty?  It’s because the manufacturers do not have much faith the machine will last much longer than that.<br />

Beyond their warranty coverage, Sole Fitness is building some excellent elliptical trainers.  In a recent test I very impressed with the <strong>smooth elliptical motion</strong>, and how quiet it was, even when I cranked up the resistance.  I also liked the 20” stride.  Most ellipticals are built with a 16”-18” stride.  With a smaller stride you often feel like your workout is constrained, and the elliptical motion bouncy. For someone who is over 6’ the longer stride is a must, but even for people of average height the 20” stride feels natural and comfortable.</p>
<p>Sole has an excellent reputation. Their treadmills have won several <strong>“Best Buy”</strong> awards.  TreadmillDoctor.com calls their folding treadmills, <strong>“One of the best fold-ups on the planet.”</strong></p>
<p>In addition, their treadmills are used by the Hilton chain for in-room fitness. Having been proven in a commercial environment, this is a statement on the durability of their machines. This same quality can be found in their elliptical trainers.</p>

The vitamin plays some role in forming red blood cells and muscle and other tissues and in preventing the oxidation of vitamin A and fats. It is found in vegetable oils, wheat germ, liver, and leafy green vegetables. Vitamin E is popularly advocated for a wide range of diseases, but no substantial evidence has been found to back these claims. In fact, recently there have been conflicting reports regarding the benefit of vitamin E. Although vitamin E is stored in the body, overdoses appear to have lower toxic effects than do overdoses of other fat-soluble vitamins. The benefits of vitamin e supplements have been widely discussed and there are various opinions as to it efficacy; however, it has been noted that in low doses it does not seem have a detrimental effect.</p>
<p>Even the finest public health and medical services are of limited value to people who have poor health habits. Numerous studies have proven that physical health and longevity are linked to the following: eating a balanced diet, maintaining proper weight, exercising regularly, using condoms and limiting the number of sexual partners, avoiding tobacco, and avoiding alcohol or consuming it in moderation. People who fail to follow these guidelines increase their risk of cardiovascular disease, cancer, AIDS, hepatitis, and other lethal diseases.<br />

<p>In an article in the July 6 JAMA, I-Min Lee, M.B.B.S., Sc.D., of Brigham and Women&#8217;s Hospital and Harvard Medical School, Boston, and colleagues analyzed data from the vitamin E component of the Women&#8217;s Health Study, which tested whether vitamin E supplementation decreases the risk of cardiovascular disease and cancer among healthy women. The researchers found with the vitamin E group, there was no significant effect on major cardiovascular events, on the incidences of heart attack or stroke, as well as ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke. For cardiovascular death, there was a 24 percent reduction. There was no significant effect on the incidences of total cancer or breast, lung, or colon cancers. Cancer deaths also did not differ significantly between groups. There was no significant effect of vitamin E on total death although some research shows that large doses do indeed have a detrimental effect.</p>

<p>Antioxidants are particularly important in the context of organic chemistry and biology: all living cells contain complex systems of antioxidant chemicals and/or enzymes to prevent chemical damage to the cells&#8217; components by oxidation. The importance and complexity of antioxidants in biology is reflected in a medical literature of more than 142,000 scholarly articles.</p>
<p>A diet containing antioxidants from plants are required for good health since plants are an important source of organic antioxidant chemicals. Antioxidants are widely used as ingredients in dietary supplements that are used for health purposes such as preventing cancer and heart disease. However, while many studies have suggested benefits for antioxidant supplements, several large clinical trials have failed to clearly demonstrate a benefit for the formulations tested, and excess supplementation may be harmful.</p>
<p>Antioxidants are chemicals that reduce oxidative damage to cells and biochemicals. Researchers have found high correlation between oxidative damage and the occurrence of disease. For example, LDL oxidation is associated with cardiovascular disease. The process leading to atherogenesis, artherosclerosis, and cardiovascular disease is complex, involving multiple chemical pathways and networks, but the precursor is LDL oxidation by free radicals, resulting in inflammation and formation of plaques.<br />

Research suggests that consumption of antioxidant-rich foods reduces damage to cells and biochemicals from free radicals. This may slow down, prevent, or even reverse certain diseases that result from cellular damage, and perhaps even slow down the natural aging process.</p>
<p>Since the discovery of vitamins, it has been recognized that antioxidants in the diet are essential for healthful lives. More recently, a large body of evidence has accumulated that suggests supplementation of the diet with various kinds of antioxidants can improve health and extend life.</p>
<p>Many nutraceutical and health food companies now sell forms of antioxidants as dietary supplement. These supplements may include specific antioxidant chemicals, like resveratrol (from grape seeds), combinations of antioxidants, like the &#8220;ACES&#8221; products that contain beta carotene (provitamin A), vitamin C, vitamin E and Selenium, or specialty herbs that are known to contain antioxidants such as green tea and jiaogulan.</p>
