What do Collars say about you???

Collars, an everyday fashion statement taken for granted can be dated all the way back to the 1300’s. Since that period, fashion has tried its own versions of collars (think Shakespeare) and also a staple of business distinction in the 20th century where terms like blue collar and white collar were coined.

The two most common types of collars that are found today are the Windsor collar, which is a folded down collar spread wide to accommodate the Windsor knot, and the more formal Wing collar that accommodates the bow tie on a formal tux shirt.

Starching the collars as a form of stiffening them was used for the longest period of time and is still widely used everywhere. This allowed the collar to remain stiff and unwrinkled. Just like shoes, collars say a lot about you. Are you neat and tidy (stiff well starched collars) or are you sloppy and messy (wrinkled and limp collars)?

However, who has time to starch nowadays?? If you are one of them, then touché!!!

Modern creativity invented a quick and easy solution, Collar Stays.

Most collars being sewn today have pockets to house collar stays. Your shirts do come with plastic collar stays that are an industry standard. However as most of us already know, they are either lost, disfigured with the dryer heat, or often break. These collar stays are often flimsy and offer no support or not enough support. You need something more reliable and firm, that gives you unconditional support and will not disfigure with heat. Metal collar stays provide you with that well starched look without the starch, but no one is the wiser.
Two conflicting fashion choices, combined in one! Yes, it can be done. The day denims were paired with blazers, is the day the sporty classy look was born.

Many men throw on a blazer on top of their tee’s and denims to give a touch of classiness. Lets take a look at the other spectrum shall we. Lets throw in some denims to your classy wear. How do we do that, dress as if you would going to a ball. Then drop it a notch with a clean pair of denims. Avoid the rags and shags, leave those shreaded Seven’s at home and wear the untorn pair. Dark denims are best, but don’t let that stop you. Loose the bow tie or tie and opt for an open collar, but don’t be afraid to wear those French cuffed shirts. Corduroy blazzers shout out sporty.

Wear your cufflinks like this ...

Many people are under the impression that cufflinks are worn for formal occasions only. Yesterday, I was asked whether I was on my way to a wedding!! Yes, groomsmen and their best men wear cufflinks for the big day, men will even sport them to black tie balls, formal events and even graduations. The matter of fact is, you can wear cufflinks any day, every day. You can wear cufflinks with a suit, or even wear those best cufflinks casually with your favorite pair of denim. The choice is in your hands.

There are two common ways you can wear your cufflinks. Your french cuffs can be folded side by side for the classic cufflink look. Use this style for a formal setting such as those weddings, graduations, even job interviews. In fact, french cuff shirts convey a certain elegance to your look.

The second way you can style your french cuffs is to fold one cuff over another as shown in the second picture below, and secure them with your cufflinks. Ideal for a casual setting, you can decide to go with a suit blazer or even a casual vest. Lose the vest after dinner for a night of dancing, or keep it on for a lounge type setting. You be the judge.

You should definitely dress the part. Wear something that you feel comfortable in and is pressed. I can’t tell you how many times I see men walking around looking like they just took the shirt out of the bag and put it on.

To be safe, a nice dress shirt and clean properly tailored dress pants with a tie goes a long way.
Tie clips, also known as the tie clasp or tie bar, are worn horizontally across and over the tie, and beneath the shirt to secure the tie in place. Tie clips are great must have mens accessories that can make your over all look far more crisp and professional.

How to Wear a Tie Clip.

Your tie clips should measure three fourths the width of your tie to allow for a balanced look. When placing your tie clip, try to place it just above your top jacket button so that it can be seen, but not overly close to the knot of the tie.

For a great touch, find a tie clip that best compliments the tie and shirt that you are wearing. This can sometimes be challenging, however, if you prefer the classic look which suits your overall appearance, then buy a simple silver tie clip. These tie clips go well with any white dress shirt, or shirts of solid colours and patterns.

For times when you feel like grabbing attention, a simple tie clip will not cut it. Buy tie clips that sport carbon fiber designs, crystal stones as well as textured or stamped patterns. Polished tie clips hints professionalism and class when matched with other polished mens accessories that you are wearing.
RULE 11 - The Tailored Fit

Nothing fits better than custom made clothes. Tailoring, when done right, should communicate to others a sense of elegance. In order to get tailoring done right, you need to know what to look for.

When tailoring a shirt, take into consideration your physique. However, regardless of your body type, avoid baggy at all costs. Your shoulder seams need to be exactly at the end of your shoulder. As for arm length, make sure your cuffs sit exactly where your wrist ends and your hand begins. Anything shorter or longer will be uncomfortable especially when wearing your suit jacket. When wearing French cuffed shirts, you can get one size arm length longer so as to allow for those cufflinks to be noticed. For men’s cufflinks, click HERE

A tailored suit jacket should be formed around your body shape. Again make sure your shoulder seams are exactly where your shoulder ends. The suit jacket needs to be close to your body when buttoned but not too close where it pulls across your back. Remember Rule 8 when picking the number of buttons for your suit jacket. To give you a slimmer and taller appearance, arms holes need to be higher to convey that look.

As for the dress pants, a close fit trumps the baggy fit any day. For a well rounded look, make sure there is not a lot of room around your thighs and backside. Keep the length of your pants steady, not to short, not too long but ask for little or no break at the cuffs.

Wanting to exert professionalism? Then grey could be your new favourite color, and for very good reasons. Nothing shouts professional as a grey suit. The grey suit is appropriate for any occasion and can be worn day or night, in any season. Pair the suit with a brown pair of dress shoes and a brown belt for a European flair. Compliment a charcoal grey suit with a light weight cashmere sweater vest or a light pin stripe grey suit with charcoal sweater vest over a crisp white shirt. You can go from business to casual by removing the tie and unbuttoning the top buttons on the shirt.

The other great thing about grey is you don’t have to think too hard on pairing it with the right colours. Easy and a perfect wardrobe staple, your colour choice can be safe, while getting a variety of different chic looks. Do not be afraid to wear the colour of the season with this suit. By adding the right tie and a tie clip, you can add the spice you are looking for. As for gloves, you can never go wrong with leather gloves. Make sure your gloves have a good snug fit with out the extra space. Simple detailing allows it to mix well with whatever you are wearing.
A staple in every man’s wardrobe and the great thing about them is that they are seasonless. Yes, sweaters and vests are back and they come in cotton for the summer, wool for the winter and cashmere is a fabric you can wear all year round. Cashmere is one more luxurious thing you can have in your closet. Pick neutral colours like black, navy, and charcoal. V-neck and Crew-neck sweaters are your common neck cuts and v-necks are great as they can be easily worn casual over a tee-shirt with your jeans for casual fridays.

If you are planning on wearing your sweater with your suit jacket, you want to make sure it is lightweight and fits perfectly. Vests make for a great add on when you don’t feel like wearing the suit jacket. Wear the vest over your dress shirt making sure that the collars sit over the vest and the tie knot sits neatly on the neck line. For those days when you feel daring, wear a bright coloured shirt and tone it down with a dark vest. It will allow for you to be noticed without the overwhelming feel.

Buttoned shirts are recommended when wearing sweaters, however the vest allows you to wear any cuff type including those French cuffs or Euro cuffs with your favourite cufflinks.

They say you can tell a lot about someone by looking at their shoes. This upscale adventure has a few guide lines that can be followed. First of all, never compromise quality when it comes to your dress shoes. There are a number of different types of dress shoes to pick from, namely Oxfords, loafers, monk strap and dress boot, just to name a few.

Secondly, picking the colour of your dress shoes is crucial when pairing your whole outfit. The black dress shoe is the one colour that every closet needs to have. Brown shoes should never be worn with your black suit. Black shiny shoes are the classic shoes and for a casual look, pick the black shoes with a matt finish. Suede can also be substituted for a casual look instead of the matte leather. Brown dress shoes however go well with grey pants. Be sure the shoes and belt colours match.

The third guide line is the shape of the dress shoes. Avoid square toed shoes with your suit. Those can be forgiven with a casual look, especially when wearing jeans for a night out. Pick the elongated shoe with a European touch for an added flair and remember never hesitate to wear those in casual settings to give your outfit an urban chic feel. Slip on shoes are not appropriate for a business setting, go with the lace-ups in those cases.

Always remember, socks are to match your pants, not your shoes.

RULE 4 - Ties

When choosing a tie for your outfit, there are two important things to consider.

The first is the size of the tie. There are thin ties, thick ties and medium thick ties. The general rule of thumb is: if the dress shirt’s collar is thin, your tie should be thin. If your collar is thick, go with a thicker tie. The thickness of the tie should be proportionate to the thickness of the collar.

The second consideration is the tie’s colour. Ties need to stand out from the background they lay on, i.e. your shirt. If your dress shirt is dark, pick a lighter tie and vice versa, light shirt, dark tie. To keep pairing simple, keep the colour coordinated between the dress shirt and the tie but pick a different shade. For example, if your tie is a dark shade of green, or has dark green patterns, go with a lighter shade of green for the shirt. Once you are comfortable with the technique of colour matching, you can venture into mixing colours together.

A final touch to the tie and shirt pairing is to add a flare of elegance to seal the deal. Tie clips allow for that added noticeable edge you crave for. Tie clips are not only a decorative jewellery piece but also serve a functional purpose. They keep the tie from wandering off with movement. Place the tie clip just over the third button from the top securing the tie and dress shirt in place.
RULE 3 - The Dress Pant

When shopping for dress pants, you may need to try on several styles to find your perfect fit. The general rule of thumb is if the pockets lie flat, then you have found the right pair. However, your pants should feel completely comfortable all over.

Another big concern when it comes to dress pants is the length. How long is too long and how short is too short. High end retailers offer complimentary tailoring with your purchase of a custom tailored suit which is worth the price tag if the exact fit is what you are craving for. That does not mean you cannot find the ‘perfect’ fitted pants with non custom tailored options, however you might need to look a little bit longer. Look for that pair that gives a slight break in the pants just above the cuff. This will ensure your pants dont rise up over your ankles when seated or give you the ‘Steve Urkel’ look when standing or walking. Most retailers offer complimentary length adjustment. Tell the tailor you want a slight break over the cuffs.

Men’s dress pants typically come in 3 different cuts. Slim, straight and loose fit. If you are looking for pants that fit closer to your leg, the slim fit dress pant will give you an overall lean, urban appearance. The straight leg cut is a suitable classic style that nearly compliments all body types. If you are a man with a larger frame, then choose a loose fitting pair of dress pants, as they will give an added comfort and tend to be looser in the thigh area.

Colour choices can sometimes be overwhelming. Try to choose colours that will fit all occasion and compliments any shirt paired with it. However, if your closet is capable of holding more than 5 pairs of pants, then stock it with season’s must haves. There is nothing worse than having to wear the same pair of pants every single day. Black and grey pants dress pants are your wardrobe crucial colours before venturing out into other shades. Remember, when it comes to fashion, don’t be afraid to crack open your wallet. Looking good makes you feel good and others notice.

Shirts are trickier than you think. Display yourself in a smart and savvy with a dress shirt of the right fit. Look for a good fit around the torso area which tends to give you a clean overall feel. For a slimmer figure, pick a tight fit. Always remember your neck size and arm lengths. Nothing seems more uncomfortable than a tight collar neck and a shirt sleeve. Ask the sales person to measure your size before venturing into buying the shirt.

Dress shirt collars come in different sizes. The general rule is a thin collar always takes a thin tie. Dress shirts also come with different cuffs. Cuffs are either buttoned (one button, two buttons, even three), or unbuttoned. Unbuttoned cuffs require cufflinks to link the cuffs together. These cuffs are either French cuffs (double cuffed) or Euro cuffs (single cuff). Either way, look for some good Men’s cufflinks to pair up with your French or Euro cuff shirts. To view quality cufflinks click HERE.

If you are looking for a dress shirt that will give you a slimmer look, definitely go with a stripped shirt. When considering colour and patterns of shirts and ties, wear what you are comfortable in. If you are feeling a little daring try a patterned tie with a solid coloured shirt. There is no ‘rule’ when it comes to pairing your shirts with your tie, however it is more important to match the colours over the pattern.
