Last week (November 6-11, 2011), I attended the Georgia Smoke Divers (GSD) training in Dalton, GA. My head is a jumble of concepts, experiences, connections. I need to get my thinking out of my head and organized. (There is a book in there somewhere!) I begin the effort by relating a very intense, personal experience that added a dimension to my own knowledge base beyond my wildest dreaming.

On Monday (Day 2) when Smoke Diver candidates were learning in environments that were relatively safe, Smoke Daddy David Rhodes (GSD Incident Commander--a.k.a. Rhoadie) asked me if I wanted to go into the burn building. I immediately said, "No!" But I began to think about it. How could I possibly have any way of REALLY knowing what firefighters contend with in their decision making without experiencing the environment in which they operate? I knew that this would probably be the safest day to attempt something like this and that Rhoadie wouldn't have offered if he thought I'd be in danger, so I changed my mind.

Within a matter of minutes, the word was out that I was going to go into the burn building. The guys found a suit that would fit me. One of the firefighters, Captain Charlie Long, Johns Creek GA Fire Department, offered to take me through the building. Various instructors helped me don the gear (which weighed about 60 pounds) and show me how the breathing apparatus worked. The suit was huge and bulky; the boots were about four sizes too big; I could hardly walk. Charlie got in my face and told me that if I removed the mask while we were in the building, I WOULD DIE! He handed me a thermal imaging camera and we entered the burn building.

The building was so smokey and dark, I couldn't see my hand in front of my face. Immediately, I realized these guys work with limited senses: they are blind; the gloves they wear limit the sense of touch; the mask prevents the senses of taste and smell; the sounds in an incident often obscure or distort sounds with meaning. The experience is absolutely disorienting and frightening. I hung onto Charlie for dear life. Within a minute, I said to Charlie, "OK. I'm ready to leave." But Charlie told me to scan the room with my thermal imaging camera. He said, "What do you see?" I realized I could "see" with the camera. Although, at one point, I realized the person I was seeing was actually my own reflection in a mirror.

After a scan of the room, I once again said, "OK. Let's go." Charlie said, "Oh, but you have to see the burn room." We inched our way down the hall and into the room with the fire. Charlie told me to point the camera at the ceiling. The camera told me the temperature on the ceiling of the burn room was 650 degrees. At the mid-point of the room, where our heads were, it was about 300 degrees. I was beginning to feel my internal temperature rise. I said, "OK, Charlie, time to go." Charlie said, "We can't go back the way we came. Another team has come in behind us. We have to go down the steps to go out." DOWN THE STEPS???!!!! I fought hard to keep calm. For two days, I had been listening to the instructors work with the candidates on regulating their breathing. I consciously began to breathe very slowly and deeply. This help to calm me. We moved slowly to the top of the steps. Charlie put me in front of him. I had to find the top of the steps by feeling my way. It took an eternity to get to the next floor, but I made it unscathed.

There are multiple levels to this experience. Taking it at face value, the experience was one to cross off my bucket list. At a deeper level, I realized that I was making decisions moment by moment to stay calm, to breathe, to keep moving forward even when I don't know what is in front of me. But the ultimate lesson came from Charlie Long. By keeping me focused outward, Charlie kept me from turning into myself. When we turn inward, we become closed systems. Closed systems implode on themselves. Having someone to help keep us focused outward is invaluable, but we need to be situationally aware in those moments when we are alone to motivate ourselves to be outwardly focused.

One of my long-time friends from high school told me last week that her sister was starting chemo for a very aggressive form of cancer. Many of you know that I am a cancer survivor (15 years now) and that I lost my sister to cancer in 1996. I shared with my friend my own regimen of dealing with this very depressing protocol to pass along to her sister and thought that others might benefit.

As we get older more and more of us will be facing this horrible disease either in our own lives or in the lives of our loved ones. I am convinced that how one responds to the diagnosis and treatment of cancer makes all the difference in the world. If you know of anyone going through treatment for cancer who may be having a difficult time, either physically or emotionally, please feel free to pass these little tips along.

Always take an entourage with you to chemo sessions (I always had at least 3 friends + my husband with me). Talk and laugh A LOT!!!

Plan to do something fun afterwards, such as go to a new-release movie (the patient gets to pick the movie). They have great anti-nausea meds now, so the chances of getting sick right away are minimal. That isn’t to say the patient won’t feel like crap…he or she will. I would plan my chemo sessions for 10:00 a.m. on Friday morning. My husband and I would then go to a movie. After the movie, I would start to feel bad, so he would take me home and I’d go to bed.

Get a massage the night before chemo and about 3-5 days later. The massage prior to chemo will relax the body so that it is more accepting of the chemo. The massage after the chemo helps eliminate the poison. It is important to solicit the body’s cooperation in partnership with consciousness. Resistance and separation (i.e., feeling the body has betrayed the patient) will alienate consciousness from the body.

Walk. Shake. Dance. Do yoga. MOVE. Especially on the morning of chemo. This helps relax the circulatory and lymph systems, which will process the chemo.

My sister told me when I was going through chemo that I (“Ms. Type-A”) would have to learn to “sit and be”. She was right. I couldn’t focus to watch TV, read, or carry on much of a conversation. The weekend after my first chemo, I took a course from Deepak Chopra on how to meditate. It was money well spent. In the Christian faith, we refer to meditation as “prayer,” however, the focus is a bit different. “Prayer,” as I was taught, is something you do to speak with a separate and distant God. When I meditate, I find “God” within (Remember, Jesus said, “The kingdom of God is within you.”) This has the continued effect of helping consciousness be in partnership with the physical body.

Remember, if you aren't dead, you still have work to do!

"No matter what the present success in straightening out difficulties and harmonizing conflicts, it is certain that problems will recur in the future in a new form or on a different plane. Indeed, every genuine accomplishment instead of winding up an affair and enclosing it as a jewel in a casket for future contemplation complicates the practical situation. . . .

I would like to invite technical communicators in Georgia to participate in the Technology Association of Georgia Education Collaborative’s (TAGEC) Live and eLearn WebChallenge 2010 as mentors. ( http://www.tagforstem.org ) TAGEC is once again challenging high-school students to work in a team environment to develop a web-based application that makes a difference in their community.

Last year’s winning students earned $21,000 in college scholarships and their schools received extensive recognition statewide. The students learned teamwork skills and gained valuable technical knowledge. TAGEC is looking for mentors from the technology community in Georgia to be available for the teams. This is a great opportunity for students to get real-world experience and exposure within the business community.

This competition is a great opportunity to give back to your community. We need technical communicators to guide students in the importance of documenting their system development efforts, as well as make them aware of the importance of usability, user-centered design, embedded help, etc.

This is an opportunity for you to expand awareness of the profession, make an impact on the lives of students, and contribute to Georgia's science, technology, enginieering, and math (STEM) education goals.

Mentor training is scheduled for February 5th between 3:00 and 5:00 p.m. at the Georgia Tech Research Center on 14th Street (contact me for more details). The competition runs from February 15-April 2.

Please contact me if you are interested in volunteering. Thank you for your consideration.

Consistent, regular monitoring of your plan is critical for success. Here, I present my personal process as the model, but you can determine what works for you. My process goes like this:

Every January 1 and July 1, go through the entire process--all the exercises--from beginning to end. This takes most of day. Find a quiet reflective place to work.

Every month, on the first, determine what you have to do for every lifetime goal this month to stay on track for the next six months.

Every week, on Monday morning, determine what you have to do for every lifetime goal this week to stay on track for this month. This takes about 20 minutes.

Every day, first thing in the morning for five to ten minutes, determine what you have to do for every lifetime goald today to stay on track for this week.

Act: Do the tasks you have identified.

Here is another way to look at the monitoring process:

Planning your life is not static. It requires constant vigilance and attention so that when opportunities present themselves, you are ready. It is also important to show gratitude for everything that comes your way, good and bad, because you learn from both. When you know your life's path and you follow it, you live an authentic life. Living an authentic life facilitates your ability to positively influence others through your example. This adds to the richness of living in the world.

May you all have a wonderful and prosperous 2009.

Happy New Year, everyone! It is time to do the really hard work of putting your plan together.

Once you have your lifetime goals identified, the next bit of work is project planning. Here you determine what you need to do, by when, to achieve your lifetime goals. For each lifetime goal, respond to the following questions, in this order, with a list of goals and corresponding due dates:

What must I do in 10 years to meet my lifetime goals?

What must I do in 5 years to meet my 10-year goals?

What must I do in 3 years to meet my 5-year goals?

What must I do in 1 year to meet my 3-year goals?

What must I do in 6 months to meet my 1-year goals?

What must I do this month to meet my 6-month goals?

What must I do this week to meet my 1-month goals?

What must I do today to meet my 1-week goals?

Example

Here is an example from my own life. When I developed this process over 20 years ago, I had a lifetime goal to get my Ph.D. However, I didn't put a timeframe on it until July 2004. Here is what my plan looked like on July 1, 2004.

Lifetime goal identified in 2004 planning: Have my Ph.D. before my 60th birthday
[Note: I was 53 in 2004 and didn't yet have a Masters degree.]

What must I do in 10 years (by 2014) to meet my lifetime goals?
Complete dissertation and defense by May 2011.
Get my Ph.D. by July 1, 2011 (my 60th birthday).

What must I do in 5 years (by 2009) to meet my 10-year goals?
Complete Ph.D. coursework by May 2009.
Begin dissertation research.

What must I do in 3 years (by 2007) to meet my 5-year goals?
Get my Masters degree by December 2006.
Get enrolled in a Ph.D. program to start in September of 2007.

What must I do in 1 year (by July 2005) to meet my 3-year goals?
Apply to Masters degree program by Jauary 2005 to start in September 2005.
Apply for financial aid by April 2005.

What must I do in 6 months (by January 1, 2005) to meet my 1-year goals?
Choose Masters degree program by July 2004.
Investigate financial aid options.

What must I do this month (July 2004) to meet my 6-month goals?
Investigate Masters degree programs by February 2004.

What must I do this week (July 1-7, 2004) to meet my 1-month goals?
Investigate Masters degree programs.

What must I do today (July 1, 2004) to meet my 1-week goals?
By the time I got to this point, I was so excited about the possibilities, I wanted to do the investigation that day.

So far, I am right on track to meet this goal.

Tomorrow: Sustaining the Plan
