Here's a tutorial for an easy fabric corner bookmark for all of you avid readers out there. (They'd also make a nice little present)

But first, thanks for the kind emails regarding my dog. She is back home with us now and recovering. The ultrasound showed no signs of pancreatitis (which is what they were worried about) so it could be just a little tummy infection or the beginning stages of pancreatitis (hopefully the former). In any case, she's on anti-nausea meds and some painkillers.

Sweet girl.

FABRIC CORNER BOOKMARK

Cut out two triangles. I used a canvass fabric for extra thickness and durability. The two shorter ends of my triangle were about two inches long. Note this is not an equilateral triangle.

With right side together, sew the two short sides.

Turn the whole thing right side out.

Cut away any extra fabric.

Hold your place by placing the bookmark around a chunk of pages.

I realize this bookmark kind of resembles those pee-pee teepees someone bought for my boys when they were infants.....I suppose this could be a pee-pee teepee tutorial as well??

Farmer's Market Bliss (and a sick dog)

It was a bountiful trip to the Santa Monica Farmer's Market this morning!

purple artichokes, New Zealand spinach, strawberries, haricot verts, satsuma tangerines, sage, kale, cherry tomatoes and one sappote. Excited for this week's meals.

In other news, our dog Reba is currently in the ER. When I came home this morning, she was crying and then ran over and rolled on her back at my feet. She was telling me she was sick. She has a habit of ingesting things she shouldn't (i.e. dirty diapers), but she usually leaves the evidence behind and I didn't see anything in my house. She is getting an ultrasound and I am anxiously waiting for the results.

I did fall in love with these two brothers in the waiting room.....their owner only thought I was mildly weird for asking to take their photo.

I wanted to take a few moments to share with you the wonderful and important work artist Amy Black is doing for breast cancer survivors. I learned about Amy in a recent edition of Bust Magazine.

As a talented tattoo artist, Amy Black has been transforming breasts that have undergone surgery or mastectomy by creating nipples using a shading technique that adds such incredible verisimilitude to survivors' bodies.

I was worried that I would get red-flagged if I shared the photos of her work on my blog, but you can check them out here.

Quinoa and Veggies: Breakfast of Champions

I am a creature of habit when it comes to breakfast choices.

During the week, I alternate between Oatmeal with berries or bananas and walnuts or an egg white omelet with vegetables and a piece of whole wheat toast.

In my imaginary world, I am feasting on waffles with syrup and croissants, but, in trying to stay fit, I save those options for vacation.

On the weekends, I allow myself whole eggs (I have to watch my high cholesterol), usually in the form of a sliced hard boiled egg over whole wheat toast with tomatoes and basil drizzled in some olive oil:

But I recently stumbled upon this high protein, very filling breakfast: Quinoa and Vegetables:

For those of you unfamiliar with quinoa, it's a high protein grain-like seed, sacred to the Incas.

The above photos are quinoa as seeds on plant, quinoa once flowered and quinoa harvested.

But back to my yummy recipe:

Ingredients:
quinoa (about 1 cup cooked)
spinach
squash
shredded carrots
cilantro
egg
salt
pepper

Prepare quinoa per instruction on package. Prepare squash (I cubed, then roasted mine. I like to do this in bigger batches so I can use it throughout the week.) Place cooked quinoa in a bowl. Add spinach (or kale or chard would do nicely), carrot and cilantro. Add your squash. And, if you'd like, a egg (I left mine a little soft in the middle so the yolk dripped all over the salad). Or keep it vegan and leave out the egg!

This breakfast is full of nutrients and protein! (and is far more visually appealing than oatmeal.)

Juice Cleanse

Mr. P. spent the day in bed yesterday after coming down with a violent stomach flu. It was odd to see him sitting in one place for so long. But at one point he said to me, "Mom, I really like just relaxing in bed. I see why you want to do this." Ah, he's starting to appreciate the joys of relaxing!

Since I couldn't leave the house yesterday, I decided to do a one day juice cleanse. I could have made these concoctions in the juicer, but I didn't have any ingredients as I missed my weekly farmer's market trip yesterday, so after dropping Doodle off at school, I headed straight to the Pressed Juicery for a bundle of organic liquid goodness.

Normally I am way to hungry to survive on juice, but since the day consisted on watching Scooby Doo and reading Harry Potter, I figured I could handle it (i did sneak in a bagel chip or two towards the end of the day.)

Here's what I consumed yesterday...you can follow the ingredients to make your own versions at home:

Kale, spinach, romaine, parsley, cucumber, celery, apple and lemon

beet, apple, lemon and ginger (This one was my absolute favorite)

grapefruit and mint

coconut meat, coconut water, cacao and mint

chlorophyll water

Aloe Vera Water

In addition to lazing about with my sick child...I spent a lot of time running to the potty...these juices move right through you!!!

What I'm Reading - December / January

I had a good amount of reading time over the holidays, which doesn’t really make sense, considering the fact that I had both kids at home. But there was a long car ride to Vegas (Luckily, I can read in the car without getting sick) and a general effort to be in bed early to save my energy for holiday madness made for some reading splurges.

In any case, if you’re looking for book recommendations, here’s what I read in December / January

Room by Emma Donoghue

I uploaded this on my ipad over a year ago. I knew it was a dark tale and I just wasn’t in the headspace to dive in quite yet, so I let it sit there on my virtual bookshelf until I found myself in Las Vegas in December with some down time. I finished the book in two nights.

The story follows five-year-old Jack and his mom who have been held captive in a “room” one room his entire life. His mother has managed to create a stimulating, educational life for him. The story is told from Jack’s point of view and is an account of the re-birth of this child and his relationship with the world. This was a really powerful read highlighting not only the bond between mother and child but also the resilience and bravery of survivors.

Setting Limits for your Strong-Willed Child by Robert J. MacKenzie

Mr. P. is a passionate and insightful child. He is imaginative and kind, energetic and wise. He is also one of the most strong-willed beings I have ever met. Give him a minor discrepancy in your logic and he will plow through it like a bulldozer. He will get what he wants in this world, but in the meantime, I need a boost once in a while when it comes to parenting him. For me, this was a must-read and has given me the confidence I needed in dealing with his persistent character.

The Marriage Plot by Jeffrey Eugenides

This story follows Madeline trying to find her way post college. She becomes tangled in a bit of a love triangle. Like Madeline, I am a fellow English major and I got a kick out of all of the discussion surrounding the “importance” of understanding Derrida. Reading this in my thirties, it does seem as though she doesn’t have so much at stake, but then again, that’s kind of what the 20’s are all about…finding your way in the world and feeling as though everything is at stake.

Nurture Shock by Po Bronson and Ashley Merryman

This book exploded on to the parenting scene in 2009. I missed the boat (what’s new), but finally got my hands on a copy a few months ago. It essentially breaks down multiple assumptions about children and parenting to reveal truth behind our often times counterintuitive ways of dealing with our kids. The authors argue that many of the ways modern society “nurtures” children are actually backfiring. I took issue with some of the assertions in this book, but nevertheless it was definitely a provocative read which made me think more deeply about my own parenting methods.

The Night Circus By Erin Morgenstern

As a young adult author, it’s imperative that I keep up with what’s going on within the YA market (or at least that’s what I use as my excuse to read The Hunger Games trilogy, for example.) After reading a review of this book in the L.A. times, I ordered it from the library. It is a whimsical look at a competition of magic and illusion between two affiliates of the circus who are in a battle that puts their lives at risk. I was enchanted by the world created in this text, but found the prose to be a bit frilly. It was quite a rich visual experience reading this novel and I am sure that we will be seeing it on the big screen in a few years.

romanesco and cannellini bean salad

I bought these beautiful romanesco heads at the Santa Monica Farmer's Market this week and needed to use them! So I put together a warm romanesco and canellini bean salad.

The romanesco looks weird and cool enough that the kids will try it.

For those of you who have never seen this type of broccoli, it is so striking with spiral-shaped spears and a vibrant green color. The texture is quite soft and the flavor is nuttier than regular broccoli.

Ingredients needed:
romanesco (two small heads)
cannelini beans (one can)
parsley
spinach
olive oil
garlic
pepper
salt (optional)
chili pepper

Start by cutting the romanesco into small pieces, drizzling in olive oil and pepper (add salt here if you like) and roasting for about 10 minutes at 450 degrees.

Meanwhile, in a skillet, add some olive oil and crushed garlic (I like this Trader Joe's crushed garlic because it saves me lots of time and mal odor.)

Add a large handful of spinach leaves as well as your cannelini beans.

Wait a minute! These beans above are NOT cannellini beans. I know! In my vision, they are cannellini beans, but in my cabinet, there were only garbanzo beans. So, let's be welcoming of whatever type of bean you have handy.

Once the romanesco is roasted, place in a large bowl. After sauteing leaves and beans for about five minutes, add to romanesco bowl.

Squeeze the juice from half a lemon, throw in chopped parsley (mine's from the garden!) as well as chili powder to taste.

Delicious and hearty!

This serves me well as a main dish. My husband would call it a side dish to chicken breast or salmon.

But the best part of this meal is that it has some real versatility to extend its shelf life.
For example, for breakfast, I could add it to egg whites and some tomatoes.
For lunch, I could throw it over mixed greens.
For dinner, I could put on top of a whole wheat pizza and mozzarella with pesto.

Math Block Tutorial

Mr. P. has really gotten into math since starting kindergarten, so I decided to use this Velcro number math block to help him practice his addition and subtraction. As he progresses, I can amend it to reflect multiplication and division.

Materials Needed:
1 wooden block
adhesive Velcro
paper
lamination (optional)

To start: print out numbers. I did two sets of digits 1 - 9 and one set of 10 - 20. Don't forget to include an addition, subtraction and equal sign.

Once your pieces are printed. Cut away! (If you have a fancy cutter or are fairly more anal retentive than I am, your squares will be equal on all sides.)

Laminating the squares is an option. It will allow for more wear and tear of the numbers. I laminated these at home, but if you don't have a laminator, you can get them done at any print place like Kinko's.

Next, take your wood block and sand it down if you need to.

Take your adhesive Velcro and pick one side to stick in 5 places onto the wood.

Cut and stick the other pieces of the Velcro on the backs of all of your numbers.

Check and make sure your numbers and addition / subtraction / equal signs will all fit nicely.

Now add and subtract to your heart's content!

I need to come up with some sort of storage container for all the numbers. I'll try and do that some time this week and get back to you!

I hope this tutorial adds up to a nice project for you and your kids! (Insert ridiculous laugh at making a most terrible pun here.)

New Burp Cloth in Etsy Store

I just added three of these burp cloths to my Etsy Store, Meremadeblog.

They're made using the Echino-co train fabric on one side and soft minky on the other side.

They'd go nicely in a transportation bundle with these burp cloths.

Mr. P's Lego Birthday Extravaganza!

Mr. P. turned 6 over the holiday break!

I am a bit behind in posting this, but I wanted to share with you the special day, mostly, in case you too are interested in hosting a Lego party!

For the invitation, I went paperless with an Evite with a Lego background

I turned the board on our Thomas Train Table upside down and glued large flat Lego pieces, so when kids arrived, they headed straight for the new Lego table.

I gave them the challenge of collaboratively building a Lego city.

The first group activity was inspired by Delia Creates' Lego party for her son. To check out all of her great links to resources she used for her party click here. Following her lead, I uploaded and then cut out these Lego Men and placed them in various locations throughout the house. The kids set off on a scavenger hunt to find them all.

For the snack table, I used this yellow Lego sorting head as the inspirational centerpiece and ended up gravitating towards yellow food.

Baby bananas, veggie booty, pineapple, cheese, carrots (okay, those are more orange than yellow).

I found these great cupcake holders in traditional Lego colors to house the booty.

Outside I filled mason jars with Lego Duplo pieces as centerpieces.

The next activity was a car building assembly line. I got my various relatives to stand around the house holding different car parts (one of us has a bowl of wheels, another, a flat base, etc.)

Once the kids had constructed their own cars, they went outside to race them down the ramp that my husband built!

He built the ramp with nine lanes and they had so much fun setting their cars at the top, counting to three and watching them race down. Some then ran inside to do some construction adjustments to make their cars go faster.

We were supposed to eat lunch outside, however, an unscheduled rainstorm happened right at lunch time making things very exciting! We scrambled to move everything into our front alcove, which is outside, but covered.

For lunch, the kids had veggie corn dogs (Mr. P. has been a vegetarian for four months now) and Sun Chips while the adults dined on Chinese Chicken Salad. While they waited to be served, they colored coloring pages from the Lego website.

I made a Lego Man cake:

using a cake mold I purchased at Legoland. Even though I oiled it, it was tricky to get the cake out.

After lunch, we went outside for the pinata

which was filled with a variety of surprise Lego mini figures. The kids had fun trading and assembling them.

We also threw in some Lego Candy I purchased on amazon.

This stuff is crazy! It looks just like real Legos, tastes kind of like Sweet tarts and you can actually build with it!

Finally, it was time to say goodbye (sort of).

The goody bags included: the racing car bases, Lego soap from Etsy

(the shop I bought my soap from is currently not selling any Lego soap, so I've linked up to a different Etsy shop selling a similar product), Lego men Crayons from Etsy and more Lego candy!

A few kids and moms stayed for an impromptu after party that ran 4 1/2 hours over the regular party time.

But everyone was having so much fun!

Even Doodlebop had a great time even with all the attention on his big brother.

It was a great day and Mr. P. announced that it was the best birthday ever! Which made Mama smile!

Thank goodness birthdays only happen once a year!!!

Tortilla and Greens: My Afternoon Slump Snack

I get hungry around 3 every day. Not the "I could eat a few almonds and be satisfied" kind of hungry, but sort of ravenously hungry.

Trying to reconcile my afternoon slump with my new resolve to eat healthy is challenging. But today, I came up with this snack (although it could pass as a light meal) that has everything you need: whole grain carbs, leafy greens, protein (hummus) and healthy fats (avocado and olive oil).

I present to you my Afternoon Slump Snack: Tortilla and Greens

-Whole Wheat tortilla
-hummus (I like the kind that also has olives in it)
-spinach (or other leafy green)
-lemon
-cayenne pepper
-avocado
-olive oil
-pepper

Begin by lightly toasting your tortilla. This gives it a crunchier texture which works nicely with the smooth hummus.

Spread hummus across the tortilla.

Top with greens.

Slice and spread the avocado on top

Drizzle in a little bit of olive oil.

Squeeze 1/4 of a lemon on top.

Sprinkle with pepper and cayenne pepper for a little kick

Then happily get through your afternoon!

New Year's Resolutions

Last year, I resolved to not make any New Year's resolutions. I think I just needed a break from making promises I couldn't keep! But this year, I am back with a vengeance. So here it goes - in no particular order.

1. Get more exercise. This should be a no-brainer as I belong to a great gym and with 85 degree L.A. weather on January 1st, there's plenty of opportunities to be outside working out. My aim is to do something every day.

2. Eat real food. Things that grow on trees, things that grow in the ground. I'm trying my best to avoid things that come in packages. And I'm saying a fond farewell to cheese (my cholesterol is a bit high). I'll write more about diet later this month.

3. Organize my photographs. Let's just say I'm about three years behind......my poor little one wonders where all of this memories are.

4. Get my kids more involved in community service. Mr. P.'s school's founding principal is about service learning and they do a pretty good job, but I want to extend that into our home life and include Doodlebop as well. I think it's challenging to teach kids these lessons when they're so young in a way that really connects them, but I am going to keep trying!

5. Slow down. Say no. This is probably going to the most challenging one for me to stick to. I tend to say yes to everyone and everything. I also put a lot of pressure on myself to be uber-productive throughout the day. At one point, I was at home full time with Mr. P., receiving a second graduate degree, teaching college online and selling my novel. Yeah, I'm an over-achiever, but I am trying to do less and just take some time to relax each day. I've been having sleeping issues for the past two years and I find that when I slow down a little I am a much more pleasant person to be around and I'm able to sleep more soundly at night. And yes, this involves more time away from the computer.

For Christmas, I made this kimono dress for my niece using Heather Ross' Weekend Sewing. It's a great book with over 40 projects.

The best piece of advice I gleaned from the book was that even a skilled seamstress such as Heather Ross gets her hand made dresses and skirts professionally hemmed. She explained that it's worth the $5 or $10 to make a project look professional.

I tried my best to hem properly and follow the directions, however, the dress came out WAY to big. It was meant to be a small and it ended up something like a size 10. I'm not sure how this happened. Perhaps I was a little lose with my scissors.

So, I'm hoping for a growth spurt from my niece.

DIY Rubber Band and Nail Board

This is an easy and fun do it yourself rubber band and nail board project - a perfect gift for your inquisitive toddler.

And this one has a twist: a handy dandy rubber band holder that can velcro on and off AND a durable handle for transporting the board.

To make this project, you will need the following items:

spare rubber bands
nail (I used about 70)
hammer
piece of wood (my piece measured 9 inches by 9 inches)
sandpaper
a piece of scrap fabric (mine measured about 7 x 2)
two small pieces of Velcro
2 screws (the kind with the open loop on top)
Twine

Step One:
Begin by sanding down the wooden square so that there are no poky parts for your toddler.

Step two:
Using a ruler, mark dots every inch or so.

Step three:
Hammer your nails into every spot you've marked on your wooden square.

Step four:
Cut your scrap of fabric into a piece that is 6 inches long and 2 inches wide.

Step five:
With right sides face, sew the strip along the long, 6-inch section.

Step six:
Turn the piece right side out.

Step seven:
Sew the short ends closed.

Step eight:
At the short end of each strip, sew your Velcro (i placed the "hook" side of the Velcro on my fabric as opposed to the fuzzy piece of Velcro)

Step nine:
Line up the fuzzy side on your wood block to that the "hook" side will fit right on top of it.

Now you have a place to hang your rubber bands!

Step ten:
screw your two hooks to another side of your wood square.

Step eleven:
Place twine in the eyes of your screw and tie together.
Now you have a handle to transport your wood block.

Step twelve:

Create! The world is your geometric oyster. Enjoy!

easy gift for wonderful teachers

I wanted to share this simple hot cocoa kit that I am giving to Doodlebop's preschool teachers for the holidays.

All you need are some glass jars, cocoa mix, mini marshmallows, cinnamon sticks and baker's twine.

I'm also going to include a little paper with directions on the card.

And if they save the glass jars, I will fill with homemade jam come January!

Hopefully, these hardworking teachers will get to relax, put their feet up and sip on some hot chocolate over the break! (after all the work they put in potty training my child - they most definitely deserve it!!!)

Salt Dough Ornaments

A few days ago we made our annual batch of salt dough ornaments.

These are really the easiest tree decorations to make! I've reposted my original tutorial from last year below.

If you do decide to make some, please feel free to email me a photo or two and I'll link back to you!

This is an easy weekend ornament project.

What you'll need:
1 cup salt
1 cup flour
1/2 cup water
cookie cutters
1 chopstick (to make hole in dough)
tempera paint in many colors
brushes

Mix everything together until the dough is formed. You may need to keep adding flour little by little until it's no longer sticky.

We used cookie cutters (both Christmas-themed and Star Wars-themed) to mold dough into shapes.

Using the chopstick, place a hole at the top of the dough ornament.

Place in microwave and begin zapping on high in 30-second increments until ornament is hardened. For most ornaments, this took about a minute and thirty seconds. The uber-thick ones took about two minutes.

Wait for ornament to cool and then paint.

Let dry and add string to hang from tree!

Flying Trapeze

A few weeks ago a friend somehow talked me into taking a trapeze class at the Santa Monica pier.

I had seen this particular school before when I had taken my kids to the pier play the carnival games or go on the rides and I always thought to myself, "Who on earth would be crazy enough to take this class?"

Apparently, I am.

In case I hadn't shared this with you, I have a lovely fear of heights. This includes, but is not limited to: airplanes, bridges, tall buildings and now....trapezery. Yes, that's my own made up word.

I was excited to take the class because I hadn't really challenged myself in this way in a long time. Sure, kid rearing has plenty of challenges as do relationships and jobs, but this sort of physical challenge hadn't come my way since I did a ropes course in high school or perhaps rock climbing in college.

Climbing up the ladder was really scary, but the hardest part was taking that leap of faith off of the platform. Logic told me I was harnessed and safe, but my body was yelling the opposite.

For what it's worth, I went up three times, leaped off and hung by my legs. My kids were cheering me on below.

While I didn't become "addicted" to trapeze school as one woman in the class admitted she had become, I was glad I stepped out of my comfort zone, even if only for a few hours.

And hey! Who knew your armpits could be so sore!!

Craftastic Hotel

I came across this all-knitted hotel room on the HUffington Post. I must admit it gives me a little bit of craft envy. This knitted and crocheted nook named "Do Knit Disturb" is eager for guests at the Hotel Pelirocco in Brighton, England. Artist Kate Jenkins completed the project in a little over two and a half weeks (how's that for productivity?)

And look at the details!
