Prof B H Jajoo : Epitome of sleaze and greed at IIM Ahmedabad

Prof B H Jajoo (PhD, IIT, Kanpur). Senior IT faculty with IIMA since 1980s. Dean and “Chief Vigilance Officer” of IIMA for 2008-12.

Ever since 1990 he always (save 2007) had larger say in affairs of IT services at IIMA. Even when he did not hold any official position he continued to run his writ due to his technical prowess. Good at assimilation of IT fundas in to teaching (often repetitive offerings for working executives/ IT professionals), consultancy and IT service delivery. For whatever reason, as is also apparent from his WebPages, very little (to nil) research output in rated journals. Though he is a faculty, again for whatever reason, he always had inclination for managerial and general admin jobs. Until 2007 upset, his peers fondly used to call him a ‘postman’ for passionately owning and maintaining institute mail servers. Very meticulous in planning/ execution of teaching/ admin jobs. Vulnerable to ‘Desire’.

Shrewdly ensured that alternate power center (in IT services) did NOT emerge at IIMA. Took care that new faculty candidates with strength in his own area got rejected. Overwhelmed new IT faculty recruits. To ensure that his writ continued he even shifted the goal post for strong contenders of “Head CC or IT Manager”. Can not be one amongst equals in a team.

Involvement of this person in underlying cause of action dates back to 1991 when two young girls at Computer Center of IIMA were unduly favored. Ref point#5 of http://my-voice-of-dissent.blogspot.com/2011/02/som-must-read-letter-to-cvo-of-iim.html One girl was being courted to marry with an influential professor at IIMA. The second innocent was on radar of a lustful professor. Read between the lines.

Since 1990 Prof Jajoo antagonized entire spectrum of Computer Center staff at IIM Ahmedabad. Majorly responsible for institutional loss of ~85 man-years and ~1 crore Rupees (counting in 2011) in salary paid to victim employees.

CC staff wrote several letters to management of IIMA which had ‘in-bred’ Director since 1984. Successive ‘apne-wala’ Directors could not antagonize Prof Jajoo who knew which string to pool, when. In 2008 for the purpose of facilitating Prof Jajoo’s appointment as Dean, these letters fictitiously went missing/ destroyed by gullible administration led by Mr. N V Pillai (Secretary to IIMA board). Whistleblowers of IIMA forced reconstruction of these records in 2009 at grave risk to their employment.

It required, in 2007, radical prescription from no less than Prof Bakul Dholakia who cut Prof Jajoo to his actual size. Prof Dholakia trashed his mail servers and initiated major changes, sans Prof Jajoo, in IT services. Later on Prof Dholakia was put to little inconvenience when Prof Jajoo bounced back as Dean+CVO in new regime.

After this person became Dean+CVO of IIMA he abused his office to make other faculty members and admin officers hound whistleblower employees.

Prof S K Barua : Ripoff as Director of IIM Ahmedabad

Prof Samir Kumar Barua (MTech, IIT, Kanpur & FPM, IIMA) is a senior faculty at IIM Ahmedabad. This entry is no reflection on his professional competence in academics. Rather it is only limited to ethical dimensions of his conduct as Director of IIM Ahmedabad.

He is son-in-law of CPI strongman Mr. A. B. Bardhan. Apparently he was appointed Director of IIMA few months before Indo-US nuclear deal disintegrated UPA-I regime led by PM Manmohan Singh.

‘Sue-me-if-you-can’ kind of a person. Here are the links to moral transgressions and ripoffs by this person,

Book ‘Brick by Red Brick’ by Prof T T Ram Mohan chronicles widespread abuse of Directors office. During Prof Barua’s Directorship also governance at IIMA remained a heady mixture of vague delineation that result in wide ranging discretionary powers [faculty confirmation, promotion, work load, consultancy allocation, in-company programs, extension in service beyond age of retirement, nominations to corporate boards, etc] with Director’s office. Ofcourse being an insider Prof Barua also knew how to use these discretionary powers to oblige his suitors!

During his directorship, Prof Barua himself did target practice on whistleblowers including those among faculty. He also let other IIMA officials do the same. Actions of Prof Barua have compromised lives of several families. Repeat, this entry is no reflection on his professional competence in academics, and true reflection on him being a rip-off in terms of morals, ethics and value system. Prof T P Rama Rao : Gracefully played second fiddle to Prof Jajoo

Prof T P Rama Rao (MTech, IIT, Kanpur) is a senior IT faculty. He is with IIMA since 1970s. He was Chairman of Computer Services for several years.

This person found his family in CC of IIMA when he married with a CC staff Ms Rita Desai in late 70s. Prof Rama Rao went on to become IT faculty. Even after Mrs Rita became wife of IIMA faculty, she ‘chose’ not to become IT faculty.

For major period of his career, his wife remained his weak point. Prof Rama Rao also made serious attempts to finish his Ph.D. Good at assimilation of IT fundas in to teaching (often repetitive offerings for working executives/ IT professionals), consultancy and IT service delivery. For whatever reason, as is also apparent from his WebPages, very little (to nil) research output in rated journals.

In 1993 Prof Jajoo had obliged Mrs Rama Rao by lowering eligibility for Head of Computer Center. Lower than even that for Systems Analyst. Husband-wife duo remained grateful, subdued to dictates of Prof Jajoo for ever and gracefully played second fiddle. Infact the arrangement also suited Prof Jajoo who, anyway, could not have stood an independent minded upright officer in his domain –viz- IT service delivery.

Staff of CC, in early 90s, ran foul to ego of Prof Jajoo. Documents released by PIO (RTI Act) of IIMA reveal that husband-wife duo, in difference to Prof Jajoo, did not care to file annual performance appraisals of research staff in Computer Center.

Ultimately it required, in 2007, radical prescription from no less than Prof Bakul Dholakia who broke the jinx. As Director he decided to trash Jajoo-Ramarao nexus by hiring a very independent IT Manager. Independent beyond comfort level among faculty community. Mrs Rama Rao was forced to leave unceremoniously, with 48 hour notice.

PIO (RTI Act) of IIMA has also revealed that some very important documents relating to MoM records of Computer Services Committee went missing since Mrs Rama Rao resigned.

Eventhough PIO of the institute had confirmed that there was no trace of a large set of records (which disappeared since abrupt resignation of Mrs Rama Rao), Prof Rama Rao tried to defraud RTI applicant of information worth Rs.46000. He passed 23000 (yes 23 thousand) pages of JUNK as MoM minutes records of CSC. CAN MoM records run into 23000 pages?? Prof Rama Rao literally (yes) photo copied ALL papers in IT department of IIMA and passed them as minutes. Here is the image of 23000 pages that Prof Rama Rao passed as MoM minutes record. Out of box, it made 9 feet high stack of A4 size papers.

Issue is subjudiced. Refer to pg-3,6 of petition available on Government of India website (http://www.rti.india.gov.in/complaint_direct/RC_UG_10_10282lpbi_doc1.pdf) to notice that husband Prof Rama Rao was designated, to cover up for his wife, as CSC Chairman just 13 days after court ordered FREE supply of 23000 pages of MoM.
