#Endsarsprotests: See WHY police can't scrap SARS, as demanded by protesters

noreply@blogger.com (Merife Obinna) — Fri, 09 Oct 2020 14:39:00 +0000

Spokesperson of the Nigerian Police force, Frank Mba have revealed that the reason why the Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS) can't be scrapped by the federal government, as anti-SARS protests continues in cities around the country.

Speaking, Officer Mba insisted that some SARS operatives are involved in the fight against insurgency and banditry in the north.

“If the #EndSARS hashtag is seen as a symbolic call for the reform of SARS, I would say clearly that the leadership of the NPF is in line and ready to work with those making that call,” he said.

“However, if the hashtag should be seen as a call for the total disbandment of SARS, I would tell you very clearly that it will be difficult for any responsible organisation to work that path, taking into cognisance the amount of investment in training that government has made in setting up that department and the very critical roles it is playing.

“As a matter of fact, we have received a lot of calls from people particularly in states like Maiduguri, Yobe, and some other parts of the north where SARS operatives are deeply embedded in the fight against banditry, insurgency.

“And these people have made it very clear that ending SARS is not even an option for them because of the critical roles SARS operatives are playing in those areas, heavily on bandits, terrorists and other kinds of criminals.”

It can be recalled that protests have started all over the country following increased police brutality, with SARS receiving repeated mentions, notorious for its excessive use of force, arbitrary arrests and, in some cases, extrajudicial killings.

In Lagos where the protests began and now in its second day, residents flooded major roads with placards, insisting “enough is enough”, and it is time to scrap the squad.

News outlet, The Cable, had reported how policemen, including SARS officials, reportedly killed 92 Nigerians in one year.

Opinion: Nigeria In Financial Crisis: Robbing Our Children to Pay for Our Greed by Atiku Abubakar (@Atiku)

noreply@blogger.com (Merife Obinna) — Tue, 16 Jun 2020 10:38:00 +0000

Editor's note: A former vice President, Atiku Abubakar writes in how the admistration of Muhamaddu Buhari can reduce borrowings and increase revenue.

Nothing has shocked me in my entire life in public service as the revelation from Nigeria’s First Quarter 2020 financial reports in the Medium Term Expenditure Framework and Fiscal Strategy from the Federal Ministry of Finance, Budget, and National Planning, which shows,

alarmingly, that whereas Nigeria spent a total sum of ₦943.12 billion in debt servicing, the Federal Government’s retained revenue for the same period was only ₦950.56 billion. This means that Nigeria’s debt to revenue ratio is now 99%.

No one should be deceived. This is a crisis! Debt servicing does not equate to debt repayment. The reality is that Nigeria is paying only the minimum payment to cover our interest charges. The principal remains untouched and is possibly growing.

We are at a precipice. If our revenue figures do not go up, and go up quickly, Nigeria risks a situation where our revenue can't sustain our debt servicing obligations. Meaning that we may become insolvent, and our creditors may foreclose on us.

In my opinion editorial of December 17 2019, titled 'Endless Borrowing Will Lead Nigeria to Endless Sorrowing', I had cause to counsel the Federal Government to desist from indiscriminate lending, and offered suggestions on ways to both increase revenue and reduce expenditure.

However, my counsel fell on deaf ears. And now we have come to this.

Again, on May 15, 2020, I counselled that the FG ought to reduce Nigeria’s budget by at least 25%, to reflect the economic realities of the times that we live in. Again, my entreaties were brushed aside.

As part of an administration that paid off Nigeria’s entire foreign debt, I am concerned by the alarming and avoidable unprecedented increase in our debt to GDP ratio and debt to revenue ratio. The alarm I sounded last year is now sounding louder.

Not only have we squandered our opportunities, we have also squandered the opportunities of our future generations by bequeathing them a debt that they neither incurred nor enjoyed.

As a matter of utmost urgency and importance, I call on the Federal Government to take immediate steps to drastically reduce its expenditure, especially on wasteful projects, such as maintenance of the Presidential Air Fleet,

and unnecessary renovations of buildings that could serve as is, limousine fleet for top government officials, overseas travels and treatments, and the ₦4.6billion Presidential villa maintenance budget, etc.

We cannot be on the verge of economic ruin, while still maintaining a Presidential Air Fleet that has more planes than the Presidential fleets of those from whom we take these loans.

Nigeria must sell those planes and channel the revenue to other vital areas of need while taking additional steps to reduce the cost of running our government.

The Federal Government cannot continue to justify these unsustainable numbers by pointing at Nigeria’s debt to GDP ratio.

That is only half the picture. Our debt to revenue ratio paints a much more realistic portrait of our financial situation, especially as our revenues are majorly tied to a mono-product, oil and gas, which are very vulnerable to global shocks.

Again, I warn that Nigeria is facing a crisis, and we cannot continue to keep up appearances by taking out more loans to prop up our economy. That will amount not just to robbing Peter to pay Paul, but to robbing our children to pay for our greed! -AA

Revised 2020 budget: National Assembly complex to get N27.7 Billion for renovation, Education and health gets HUGE cuts

noreply@blogger.com (Merife Obinna) — Wed, 03 Jun 2020 07:27:00 +0000

The Federal Government have reversed the N37 billion budget for the renovation of the National Assembly complex to N27.7 billion, according to documents obtained by the Punch.

According to reports, the FG, in the revised 2020 budget, cut N9.3bn from the budget for the renovation of the National Assembly complex.

The project, which it is to be handled by the Federal Capital Territory Administration, attracted serious public criticism from a large collection of Nigerians.

However, following the sharp drop in crude oil price, the FG decided to reduce the money for thw renovation.

It can be recalled that the President Muhammadu Buhari had had on Thursday presented the 2020 Appropriation Act (amendment) Bill to the National Assembly, which both the Senate and the House passed for second reading same day.

Buhari explained that the amendment became necessary in view of the sharp decline in crude oil prices and the cut in Nigeria’s crude oil production quota occasioned by the COVID-19 pandemic.

In the proposed revised budget, while the National Assembly complex renovation budget was reduced to N27.7bn (a reduction of 25.1 per cent), the Basic Health Care Provision Fund, which is meant to cater for all the primary healthcare centres across the 774 local government areas in the country, was significantly reduced by N44.4bn to N25.5bn, a decrease of more than 42.5 per cent

The BHCPF is made up of one per cent of the Federal Government Consolidated Revenue from international partners such as the World Bank, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the United States Agency for International Development.

It is the fundamental funding provision under the National Health Act and was appropriated for the first time in the 2018 budget since the Act was signed in 2014.

Also reduced is the Universal Basic Education fund, which was also reduced significantly from N111.7bn to N51.1bn, by more than 54.2 per cent, according to documents obtained by Dataphyte, an open data organisation.

The UBE is a reform programme aimed at providing greater access to quality basic education throughout Nigeria.

It seeks to ensure an uninterrupted access to nine-year formal education by providing free, and compulsory basic education for every child of school-going age.

Incidentally, the budget for the National Assembly which was N128bn was cut by only 10 per cent, bringing its revised total budget to N115.2bn.

The same calculation was applied to the National Judicial Council as its N110bn original budget was reduced by just 10 per cent, bringing it down to N99bn.

Roger Federer, owner of a men's record 20 Grand Slam singles titles, earned $106.3m (£86.3m) in the last 12 months, including $100m (£81.2m) via endorsements, to move up four places and become the first player from his sport to top the list.

WOW! My predecessor spends N50 MILLION on every of his journey to Abuja, Bauchi State Governor reveals

noreply@blogger.com (Merife Obinna) — Sun, 31 May 2020 10:41:00 +0000

The Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, have revealed that his predecessor spent N50 million every time he travelled to Abuja.

He revealed this during a media chat with newsmen to mark his one year in office.

He said this in reaction to allegations by the opposition All Progressives Congress in the state which alleged that the present government does not follow due process in awarding contracts.

“I don’t go to Abuja very often. In the past, the former occupant (former governor Mohammed Abubakar) spent N50m to go to Abuja, just to go to Abuja, and to them, that is due process.

“N50m just to go to Abuja, it is there on record, I don’t even take it. My protocol, yes, as a governor, will take N3m to N5m to go with me. We are not saying this to beguile anybody but it is there. If you take N50m times four, that is N20m, you cannot do anything, you need projects.”

“We know we are being prudent and we will continue to be prudent and we are not looking for anything, God has given us everything. I am the most beguiled, investigated and denigrated person, yet the people have faith in me," he said.

On the question of the whereabouts of the aircraft belonging to the Bauchi State Government, the governor explained that over $3 million was needed to repair it.

He said,"The aircraft is there parked, that was how I found it, right now, it has no value because it has no insurance. It was repaired in Morocco sometimes back and it was brought back to Nigeria and its engine started leaking, so we left it.

“The repairs of the aircraft have gulped about $3 million, now it has no value but maybe if it is repaired. Since it is a 50-seater, the value maybe $7 or $8 million if we are to sell it and it can be useful since it is a new aircraft.

“Our problem is that we don’t have that kind of money. We’ll have to use wisdom to see how we can repair it because it is a big loss to the state.”

He also spoke on the release of funds to the Ministry of Power and ministry of Education.

“We have sent N450 million to the Ministry of Education to renovate two schools, the Special School in Kafin Madaki and that of Zaki, the roofs were blown off and I am going to renovate it 100 perc ent with about N380 million,” he said.

However, reacting, a former aide to the former Governor, Ali M. Ali, described the allegations as “diversionary”.

“They should stop giving out misguided and misleading information to the public.

“They said we should refund N1tn, it’s just to divert attention because they’ve seen heat from the people that helped them into power.

“Now, they are bringing the issue of taking N50 million to travel to Abuja every trip, how can that N50 million be spent because anytime he went to Abuja, he usually stays in his house. How is that possible? On who and who would N50 million be spent on? This is unthinkable.”

“I have faced opposition from the Federal Government, even my traducers, I don’t take issues with them, I know some of them in person based on political permutations. Even now, I am suffering from a gang-up, gang-up from even people I have worked with to come to this level, it is coming but we ignore it.”

Minister of State for Education: Schools not REOPENING June 8th! [SEE WHY]

noreply@blogger.com (Merife Obinna) — Wed, 27 May 2020 18:47:00 +0000

The Federal Government have revealed that it is considering sectionalisong classes for primary, secondary and tertiary students in educational institutions ahead of school reopening amid this covid 19 pandemic.

This was relvealed by the Minster of State for Education, Emeka Nwajiuba, today during the briefing by the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 in Abuja.

The Minster who faulted reports that schools would reopen June 8th, insisted that the Federal Government can't take costly risks especially regarding safety of pupils and students.

"Until we are sure these children can go to school, return safely and not bring up with them COVID-19 and infect people who are more susceptible than they are, then we are running a huge risk and God forbid, in our hurry, something happens to our children, I am not sure how anybody will be able to retrieve what has been lost," the Minister explained.

He adde that the ministry was being guided by the advice of experts including those of the World Health Organisation, noting that the decision to reopen schools would be carefully arrived at because education is on the concurrent list of the Nigerian Constitution.

He appealed to private owners of schools to co-operate with the government in ensuring a safe reopening.

“We are going to publish a specification on what we expect COVID-19 or post-COVID-19 reopening to look like. We are not talking about coping with COVID-19 but in spite of COVID-19, we expect that we will adapt.

“For a country that has over 115,000 primary schools, you will understand that 35,000 of these who are private must agree to set up the same standard in other to allow children to go in.

“We may have classes in the morning and classes in the afternoon so that we will have the whole of the infrastructure divided, provided they can serve us. I am not sure we will have classes at night. But we can do with morning and afternoon for now,” he explained

HELP! Three weeks to my wedding and I don't understand my wife-to-be, man cries out

noreply@blogger.com (Merife Obinna) — Tue, 26 May 2020 16:28:00 +0000

An unknown man, who is set to wed in 3 weeks have cried out for help.

The unidentified man made the post stating the strange things he has seen in his fiancee some few days to their wedding.

Read below:

I could be happy now but the next minute, she changes mood all of a sudden. We dated for over year after someone match make us but this mood swing things continued overtime so sometimes I get confused even as i really tried managing the pressure. She's a nice girl, takes good care of me, buys clothes, cooks, always wants me to look good but the problem is the rate which she switches mood easily.

Financially, we are both average earner but I think she earns better pay than me.

For instance, recently we got a new apartment - 2bedroom flat but whenever I say something she doesn't like or she doesn't want to hear, she just reacts like why would I say such a thing. All the while we were dating, we never stayed with each other as we stayed in our parents house. Fast forward* most times, as the man, after switching mood, I try to pacify her by petting and apologising but she doesn't just want to listen.

Just today, we were playing with each other on the bed, touching each other (not sensitive part) and she wanted me to kiss her. So I told her jokingly that "but you know this is not biblical" as an advocate of no sex until after marriage. I have never had sex with her either. The next thing she said, "why are you talking like this" she stood up, went straight to the sitting room and slept there. I went to meet her there to pacify her again but she wouldn't listen.

Please note that I have not and can never beat or abuse her cos I'm a Christian.

I'm just tired. She's really getting on my nerves. Our wedding is 3 weeks time but I dont just know what to do. People, friends and family are already aware of the impending marriage but I'm afraid that if a lady can switch mood like this, who knows what will happen tommorrow. I cant sleep in peace...

Please advice. This is happening right now.

What advice would you give him? Use the comments.
