Qualsevol persona que treballi amb un ordinador tot el dia ha de vigilar de no fer-se malbé l’esquena o la vista. I treballar de traductora autònoma implica seure un munt d’hores davant d’un ordinador (o, encara pitjor, d’un portàtil!).

He estat llegint una mica sobre ergonomia i ordinadors i he descobert que faig tot el que no hauria de fer. Encara no em fa mal l’esquena, però suposo que és qüestió de temps...

A continuació incloc una llista amb el que hauríem (hauria) de fer quan treballem davant d’un ordinador.

Això és una crida per a tots els qui no donen importància a l’ergonomia: comenceu a pensar-hi abans que el cos no us demani ajuda!

Canells rectes
Espai suficient per a les cames

(Vaig publicar aquesta entrada en anglès fa uns mesos, però volia compartir-la en català. Finalment, he arribat a la conclusió que escriuré només en català. Així, qui no ho entengui, haurà de contractar un traductor!)

Objectius d'una traductora per al 2011

Ja estem a març i m'adono que encara no he escrit l'entrada que tenia pensada per a principis d'any! Volia fer un recull d'objectius i intencions per al 2011, que, encara que estigui molt trillat, em sembla una idea molt útil. Però em fa l'efecte que he estat massa ambiciosa i, al final, no he escrit ni tan sols una ratlla.

Per sort, he complert el que havia de ser el primer punt. O sigui que, per tornar a endegar el meu refugi virtual, inclouré només aquest objectiu, que ja és prou important.

Tenir el millor equip per treballar de la millor manera possible

Aquest any he decidit canviar l'equip complet: he escollit un ordinador de sobretaula molt pontent, amb Windows 7 i una pantalla de 21 polzades. Per sort, l'he pogut fer a la mida de les meves necessitats perquè tinc uns cosins experts que m'han recomanat la millor màquina i me l'han muntada per un preu increïble (si algú vol referències, que m'ho demani).

EXPEDIT d'Ikea

També em calia millorar la posició de treball, o sigui que m'he comprat un escriptori nou de 80 cm d'amplada amb unes lleixes molt pràctiques per als diccionaris (made in Ikea, és clar).

NOMINELL d'Ikea

I una cadira ergonòmica, també d'Ikea. Potser és una mica cara (125 €), però l'esquena queda totalment en contacte amb el respatller i es pot adaptar a diferents posicions. Vaja, la millor cadira que he tingut mai!

Tot plegat m'estalvia mals d'esquena, cansament d'ulls i, encara que sembli mentida, fa que al matí tingui moltes més ganes de posar-me a treballar. De debò!

Segurament, haig de millorar moltes més coses, però, de moment, em conformo amb això.

Traductores: después de comer, ¡infusión!

Ponerse a trabajar por la tarde, después de comer, cuesta mucho. Para los traductores que trabajamos en casa, todavía puede ser más pesado porque si estás en casa no vas a comer un sándwich o algo ligerito. Ya que tienes la cocina al lado, ¡pues aprovechas y comes bien!

A, pero el problema viene después, cuando te sientas de nuevo ante el ordenador y ves que el aparato digestivo ha acaparado todas tus energías. A mí se me cierran los ojos de sueño. ¡Lo mejor es una siestecilla! Pero a veces no tengo tanto tiempo a mi disposición y, si no quiero acabar a las 10 de la noche, tengo que prescindir de este lujo.

El café es una solución, pero ya habréis oído decir que la cafeína no es muy buena para el organismo. La verdad es que te altera, te despierta y mejora tu concentración, sí, pero con el tiempo, es cada vez menos efectivo y las consecuencias cada vez son peores.

Hace unos meses probé unas infusiones 100% naturales que encontré en una página de una profesora de yoga francesa. La página tiene mucho nivel y las infusiones están bastante buenas y tienen unos efectos sutiles pero suficientes. La autora de la página recomienda tres: una para el desayuno, una para después de comer y una para antes de acostarse.

La del desayuno contiene jengibre, canela y cardamomo y sirve para despertar un poco la cabeza y dar vitalidad.

La de después de comer es realmente efectiva. Lleva comino, semillas de hinojo y semillas de cilantro y ayuda a digerir mejor.

La de la noche es una mezcla de manzanilla, canela y semillas de hinojo, para digerir bien la cena y dormir mejor.

Creo que todavía hay mucha gente haciendo media jornada (¡o incluso de vacaciones!), pero para los que tenemos que trabajar después de comer, espero haber contribuido un poco a mejorar vuestro rendimiento.

Translator, make your life easier!

Let’s say you’ve been assigned a huge project with loads of reference materials and diferent glossaries and/or translation memories.

Well, a few years ago, the best option for me was to have a quick look at all the references and then start translating. Meanwhile, I kept all those different documents open (Excel sheets, Word documents, Trados TM, TXT, etc.) and searched them all, one by one, each and every single time I spotted a new term in the translation.

Obviously, the process was very time-consuming and the result wasn't always great.

Well, recently I’ve been using an amazing software that makes my life a lot easier. If you already know it, I bet you’ll agree. If you never heard about it, listen carefully.

Xbench is a small program that you can download for free (again, my Catalan spirit tells me this is an important point). It’s really easy to use. You upload all the glossaries or memories you have in different formats (you can include tab-delimited text files, Microsoft Glossaries, exported Trados Workbench memories, Trados TagEditor files, SDLX memories, Star Transit projects, Wordfast memories, Idiom files, DejaVu files, etc.). Then you start your translation using any software. If you find a term or a sentence you’d like to check, just press Crtl+Alt+Ins and it takes you directly to Xbench. There, you simply select what you need, press Intro and automatically go back to your translation. Finally, you just need to press Crtl+V to paste the result in the document and you're done.

All this process is much faster than usual CAT tools and, of course, much better than checking all your glossaries one by one and copying and pasting the terms you need.

La concepció de la interpretació

Voldria compartir un parell d’idees sobre la interpretació.

La setmana passada vaig estar treballant d’intèrpret i feia temps que no ho feia. Em vaig adonar d’unes quantes coses (o potser vaig refrescar la memòria) bastant curioses sobre la percepció que té el públic de l’intèrpret.

En primer lloc, hi ha molt poca gent que conegui la professió i que sigui conscient de les dificultats que comporta aquesta feina. Sí, quan parlem d’intèrprets, tothom diu de seguida que la interpretació simultània els sembla tant i tant difícil, que és gairebé un do! Però, en realitat, no en tenen ni idea perquè no s’han parat mai a pensar-hi.

Si fossin conscients de les dificultats que comporta, no parlarien seguint un ritme monòton i avorrit, ni esmentarien quatre percentatges i quatre xifres de punts percentuals seguides com si els perseguís algú, ni provarien de fer brometes amb jocs de paraules, i un llarg etcètera.

Des d’aquí m’agradaria proposar un exercici interessant per a qualsevol persona que hagi de treballar amb intèrprets o que vulgui fer-se una idea del que passa a la cabina en els moments més complicats. Tothom sap dir els números en anglès avui en dia, oi que sí? Bé, doncs l’exercici consisteix en dir la frase següent en anglès: «Directives 1792/2005, 1286/2009, 2675/2008, 2344/2003 i 1557/2004». Proveu de dir aquests cinc números, inclosa la barra transversal (slash) en català o castellà i després en anglès i comproveu quan heu trigat amb cada llengua. Crec que, després de l’experiència, la propera vegada que treballeu amb intèrprets potser baixareu el ritme quan hàgiu d’esmentar una xifra o més d’una de seguida.

Recordo que a la facultat ens feien llegir discursos perquè els companys els interpretessin des de la cabina. Preparar els textos i llegir-los davant de la classe era un exercici gairebé tant important com practicar la interpretació simultània, perquè t’adonaves de com era de complicat presentar un tema sense llegir-lo directament, intentant mantenir l’interès del públic i sense embalar-te.

D’altra banda, els intèrprets sovint sentim la frase «no pateixis, si jo ja sé anglès, no cal pas que em tradueixis». Jajajajajaja (perdó), no em feu riure!! Però si després, quan algun delegat estranger fa una pregunta, tothom corre a agafar els auriculars perquè no han entès res!! Evidentment, és un comentari que qualsevol intèrpret ignora, però fa certa ràbia sentir-lo perquè implica una infravaloració de la teva feina. Compte amb aquest comentari, senyors!

Bé, com sempre, el problema és el desconeixement. Igual que el món dels traductors freelance que comentava l’altre dia.

Només volia compartir un parell d’idees que m’han vingut al cap, res especial. I, com sempre, qualsevol comentari serà benvingut :)

Truquillos de Word para traductores

Hace días que quiero escribir un par de cosas sobre Word —que, confesémoslo, sigue siendo la principal herramienta de la mayoría de traductores. Aunque la mecanografía clásica nos permite aumentar la velocidad y, por lo tanto, las palabras traducidas por minuto (¡y los eurillos por hora!), hay muchas más funciones del procesador que a veces nos llevan mucho más tiempo del que deberían.

Dicen, y tengo comprobado, que es mucho más rápido utilizar el teclado y dejar de lado el ratón siempre que sea posible. Así, por ejemplo, nos podemos desplazar por el texto pulsando la tecla Ctrl y las flechas (hacia los lados para saltar de una palabra a otra y hacia arriba o abajo para saltar todo un párrafo). También podemos utilizar Ctrl+Shift y las flechas para seleccionar el texto o Ctrl+Supr y Ctrl+Retroceder para borrar toda la palabra anterior o posterior de un modo mucho más ágil que cuando lo hacemos letra por letra.

Pensaba que estas combinaciones de teclas estaban ya más que difundidas, pero me he dado cuenta de que algunos traductores todavía utilizan mucho el ratón y quizás puedan optimizarse y mejorar su ritmo de trabajo.

El año pasado oí hablar muy bien de un curso para traductores impartido por Xosé Castro, "Curso de informática productiva".

Esta semana también he descubierto el blog de Bill Reilly, un traductor que recopila consejos y trucos informáticos especialmente útiles para los traductores.

Como siempre, espero que os sirva de ayuda y, si se os ocurre alguna otra manera de agilizar la producción, podéis compartirlo aquí ;)

Money matters

Why are we translators always worried about rates and budgets?

One simple explanation is that our profession has not yet attained the accreditation level that other careers have. Translators are still an unknown species, especially as far as salaries are concerned. Don’t you think so?

How much does a translator or an interpreter make a month? That’s not an easy question to answer, even if you know the industry.

I just wanted to point out that some “new” clients might be surprised when they receive a quotation for a job. This is not something that has to make us feel bad. It’s just a reassertion of that lack of knowledge of our profession and our salary scale.

Today I read this inspiring article at Thoughtsontranslation.com and I think it’s worth having a look, especially at the comments section. There are a couple of suggestions that I liked best, like the possibility of translating a summary of the text to reduce the cost, or calculating the monthly salary the translator would obtain when working for the rate he is offering. Both solutions would make the client a bit more aware of our poor financial situation in most countries.

Cómo conseguir un trabajo de freelance

Quizás parezca una obviedad, pero el modo de responder a un anuncio de una empresa de traducción puede dejar al traductor en evidencia o ser la clave para conseguir la traducción.

Como traductora sigo ampliando mi base de clientes y respondiendo a distintos anuncios que se publican en páginas especializadas. Pero además desde hace unos años también estoy al otro lado del telón. En 2006 creamos Correcta Traduccions, una empresa de traducción que trabaja con una red de traductores que se amplía constantemente para cubrir nuevos idiomas o especialidades.

Los anuncios en las páginas de traducción son el modo más rápido y seguro para contactar con traductores nuevos. Y las respuestas que obtenemos, además de ayudarnos a encontrar a la persona ideal para cada trabajo, también son de gran utilidad para observar las reacciones de los profesionales y aprender de su experiencia (o de sus errores).

Pero, ¿qué es lo que hace que la empresa de traducción no descarte tu mensaje en menos de 10 segundos?

En mi opinión, el traductor debe seguir algunos criterios básicos:

Responder a las preguntas del anuncio con la mayor brevedad posible. A menudo recibimos correos infinitos, con información detallada sobre la formación, la experiencia, los últimos proyectos, las especialidades, etc. La impresión es mucho mejor cuando el traductor sabe resumir sus cualidades en pocas frases e incluye enlaces para ampliar la información.

Sin embargo, tampoco hay que caer en un exceso de brevedad. El traductor tiene que responder a TODAS las preguntas (tarifas, disponibilidad, experiencia, etc.) y no puede esperar que la persona que recibe el mensaje busque esta información en el currículum. (Uno de los últimos correos que recibimos decía: «Adjunto mi CV. Saludos cordiales». Fue a parar inmediatamente a la carpeta de Elementos eiminados).

Adjuntar un currículum o una página de presentación en PDF con un diseño profesional e impecable. La presentación es fundamental. Un currículum en Word con un formato difícil de leer o con faltas no atrae la atención. Aunque el traductor tenga la experiencia y la formación necesarias, si hay prisa, lo más probable es que pase inadvertido.

Tener una página web propia. Una página web o un blog de referencia con información adicional que complete el currículum ofrece una visión global más precisa del candidato y agiliza el proceso de selección.

Utilizar el idioma del anuncio. La persona que ha redactado el anuncio lo ha hecho en el idioma en el cual se siente más cómoda. Si puedes escribir en ese idioma, hazlo. Puede parecer un comentario absurdo, pero más de la mitad de los correos que recibimos cuando publicamos la última oferta (en español) eran en inglés, aunque la lengua materna de los traductores fuera el español.

Puede ser una buena idea tener una carta de presentación guardada, pero es imprescindible adaptarla a cada caso o cliente. Cuanto más personal, mejor. En el blog de Pablo Muñoz encontré un artículo con información muy útil para demostrar nuestras cualidades e impresionar al cliente con una carta concisa pero con toda la información necesaria.

Creo que si se respetan estos criterios el traductor tiene muchas más posibilidades de conseguir una traducción. A partir de ahí, está en sus manos ganarse la confianza del cliente ofreciendo una traducción precisa, idiomática e impecable. Pero eso ya es otro tema.

Yoga for translators

I’d like to share some of the tricks that allow me to work all day on a laptop (I know it’s not the best way, and I’m planning to change that soon) without getting a backache. I have been trying these and other asana for more than a year now and I still can't believe how much benefit I've got from them.

If you're not interested in yoga or think that you don't have the time, please try this for a couple of weeks anyway. Then, see how you feel and decide. You can just continue doing this short version or start learning more about yoga.

Every morning allow yourself at least half an hour to get ready for the day. Take a shower, brush your teeth and put some comfortable clothes on.

Fold a blanket on the floor (no need to buy an expensive yoga mat if you don’t want to) and sit on it with your legs crossed.

1. Close your eyes and effortlessly and gently let your head drop forward and backward, then again forward and backward. Do each exercise four times to begin with.

2. Turn your head to the extreme right and return it to normal position; then turn to the extreme left and return to normal again. Repeat four times.

3. Bend your head to the right as if someone were pulling your right ear towards the right shoulder, and straighten the head, bend it to the left and straighten again. Repeat four times.

4.The next exercise resembles the neck movements of a turtle, for you should literally "stick your neck out" as far as you can, then draw it back again. Repeat this exercise four times.

5. Now slowly roll the head clockwise, then reverse. Repeat this exercise four times.

Now you're ready to start with this simple asanas. Do not force yourself, just give them a try and, most important, do it EVERY DAY, even if you only try it for a week. Follow the instructions given by the professionals from Yoga Journal. They know much better than me!

(I feel I have to translate this post into English. Living abroad I always have problems with my name and I think that I might have found an on-line solution to my concerns).

Today I found a very interesting web site: Forvo. They say it’s the most comprehensive pronunciation guide in the world. You can check any word, including given names, in more than 220 languages and listen to the audio files from different people in different accents.

For instance, if we look for “Madrid” we’ll find 15 different pronunciations: Spanish from Spain and Chile, Danish, English, Italian, etc.

Apart from the map with the little flags (to select the accent), you can also add your own version. In fact, I didn’t find the Catalan pronunciation of Madrid...

No, seriously, I think it can be a very useful tool. For example, when you need to know how to pronounce a foreign given name. Or, as it happens, my name! Meritxell is not an easy name to pronounce for anyone outside Catalonia. Thank you very much Mr. volunteer for recording it!

Tornem-hi amb la pronunciació

Avui he trobat una pàgina molt interessant: Forvo. Segons diuen, és la guia de pronunciació més completa del món. Permet consultar qualsevol paraula, fins i tot noms propis, en més de 220 idiomes, i escoltar les gravacions de diverses persones amb diferents accents.

Per exemple, si cerquem “Madrid” hi trobarem 15 pronunciacions diferents: en castellà d’Espanya (amb i sense z final) i de Xile, en danès, anglès, italià, etc.

A més del mapa amb banderetes (per seleccionar l’accent), també permet afegir una versió pròpia. De fet, no he trobat la pronunciació catalana de MadriT...

Bé, i més seriosament, crec que pot ser una eina útil quan, per exemple, volem saber com es pronuncia un nom propi estranger. Sense anar més lluny, el meu! Meritxell no és un nom gaire fàcil de pronunciar fora de Catalunya. Moltes gràcies al senyor voluntari que l’ha gravat!

Relaciones humanas en un entorno virtual

Me gustaría destacar la importancia de las relaciones humanas en este trabajo.

En el proceso de traducción, que hoy en día se desempeña casi exclusivamente a través de Internet, intranets o sistemas informáticos varios, las relaciones personales no pueden quedar a un lado.

Algunas empresas utilizan programas que envían automáticamente los documentos a los traductores, quienes a su vez vuelven a cargar el texto al sistema cuando lo han terminado. Trabajo con más de un cliente que aplica este concepto. Por lo tanto, es probable que el contacto humano se vaya deteriorando hasta desaparecer.

Pero cuando el componente humano falla, la traducción pierde valor y adquiere un toque automatizado, maquinal. Es como trabajar sin contexto, a ciegas.

Me he dado cuenta de que mi rendimiento mejora cuando conozco a la persona que está al otro lado.

La confianza con los clientes es un factor muy importante. Unas veces te permite resolver una duda que podría haber arruinado un texto. Otras, te proporciona la seguridad suficientemente para alejarte del original, mejorar la redacción y entregar un texto mucho mejor que el documento del cliente.

¿Cómo mejorar la relación con los clientes o traductores?

- Respeto. Fundamental. Respetar i valorar el trabajo de la otra parte.

- Una simple foto. Con una foto (en Skype, en MSN Messenger, en el blog o en el currículum) se puede transmitir mucha más confianza que con 100 mensajes de correo electrónico.

- Trato cordial pero personalizado. Ser educado no quiere decir no interesarse por la vida de las personas. Un pequeño comentario cotidiano (por ejemplo, sobre la nieve que cayó ayer) puede ayudar a establecer una relación un poco más íntima con la otra persona.

(No es una lista exhaustiva, sino más bien lo primero que me pasa por la cabeza cuando pienso en los clientes o colaboradores con los que me siento más a gusto).

Nou nomenclàtor de la toponímia catalana amb transcripció fonètica

Sovint ens preguntem com s’escriu un topònim en català o, fins i tot, com es pronuncia.

A la Xarxa hi ha un parell de pàgines ben útils per comprovar que hem escrit bé el nom d’un poble, ciutat o comarca en català.

Les que més utilitzo són l’Enciclopèdia Catalana i l’ÉSADIR (el portal lingüístic de la Corporació Catalana de Mitjans Audiovisuals (CCMA)), que també permet consultar topònims d’arreu del món i cercar mots d’altres temàtiques.

L’Optimot és un altre recurs, tot i que aquesta pàgina va bastant més enllà de la toponímia i presenta els resultats creuats de diversos diccionaris, com el Diccionari de l’Enciclopèdia Catalana, el diccionari terminològic TERMCAT o el Diccionari de l’Institut d’Estudis Catalans.

La gran novetat del Nomenclàtor, però, és la «transcripció fonètica i la gravació fònica dels nuclis de població». Aquestes gravacions són una idea innovadora i molt positiva. (Recordem el malaurat cas del Flix, que vam sentir anomenar d’una manera tant estranya pels locutors televisius de les comarques de Barcelona).

Els nostres topònims ja estan ben enregistrats. Ara només cal anar deixant de banda els usos (o abusos) d’altres temps que, encara que sembli escandalós, continuo trobant de tant en tant.

Grbavica - Sarajevo

It might sound stupid but after watching the multi-awarded film ‘Grbavica’ by Jasmila Žbanić I decided I was never going to live in that area of Sarajevo.

Today one of the perpetrators of the many criminal activities that took place in that neighbourhood has been arrested in Spain. How come there are so many of that kind in the area of Alicante and Tarragona?

According to the investigations, Vlahovic lived in Grbavica in early 1992. People from the neighbourhood often refer to him as “the monster from Grbavica”. He was a member of a military unit called the “White Angels” and according to witnesses he allegedly participated in a number of killings and the rape of women and girls.

The settlement, located on the left bank of river Miljacka, was the only part of the city centre of Sarajevo under the control of the Republika Srpska Army, which held it from spring 1992 to January 1996. A frontline area, several detention centers were established in the area, at the shopping centre, in garage premises and in various shop basements. As a result, many locals, Bosniaks and Croats especially, were keen to escape to other parts of the city controlled by the Bosnian Army. Some succeeded. But other say they were forcibly detained in their homes and in some cases forced to “perform hard labour”.

They blocked the roads, using buses and closed Grbavica, and then started terrorizing residents in their homes.

In his book Balija, written in 1997, Bozidar Debelonogic, former Serbian soldier from Grbavica, dedicated an entire chapter to Vlahovic’s bloody escapades. “Batko liked driving cars and killing Muslims the most. However, he also liked to beat them, but would only do it in front of others, to show off his skills and boxing techniques. He added: “He tortured and killed Muslims but every time in a different way. He conducted physical and mental experiments.” (Read more here).

Office ergonomics

Anyone working on a computer all day should be careful not to injure their back or impair their eyesight. And working as a freelance translator implies sitting a lot of hours in front of a PC (or even worse, a laptop!).

I’ve been reading a bit about ergonomics and computers just to find out that I’m actually DOING everything that one’s not supposed to do. I'm not having back pain yet, but I guess that's just a matter of time...

I'll include a short list of what you (I) should do when working in front of the computer. Please, those of you who don't really care about ergonomics, start thinking about it before your body cries for help!

Identitats balcàniques

Un dels tres objectius principals de la Constitució Europea, que fou signada a Roma ara fa uns cinc anys (29 d’octubre del 2004), és «potenciar el sentiment de pertinença europea dels ciutadans i ciutadanes dels estats membres». Les institucions de la Unió Europea ja fa temps que funcionen. L’aparell burocràtic comú s’ha instal•lat als Estats membres al costat de les burocràcies pròpies. El tractat de la unificació de l’espai universitari s’implementa, la moneda única competeix en el mercat internacional de divises i la majoria de persones han deixat de comptar les seves despeses en lires, pessetes, francs, marcs, zlots etc., però no han substituït la seva identitat per l’europea.

Podem parafrasejar la famosa frase de Massimo d’Azeglio referent a la unificació política d’Itàlia: «Hem fet Europa, ara hem de fer els europeus». La pretensió de crear una cohesió social que ha d’avalar la unitat política en una vasta regió geogràfica com és Europa no pot prosperar sense l’arrelament d’un sentiment de comunitat dels seus habitants, sense la creació d’una identitat integradora. Aquest projecte, per altra banda, no pot prosperar sense l’abandonament dels antics principis i interessos geopolítics que tradicionalment dirigeixen les relacions hermètiques entre els diferents Estats nacionals.

El problema de la creació d’una nova identitat Europea és que la imaginació de la identitat col•lectiva habitualment està constituïda per la memòria (Anderson 1991) i no per l’anticipació d’un futur hipotètic.

Els països ex-Iugoslaus estan fent cua a la porta d’entrada a la Unió Europea, mentre es recuperen de les ferides de la guerra per les noves fronteres nacionals que tingué lloc en la darrera dècada del segle XX, i amb l’esperança que aquesta adhesió solucionarà almenys algun dels nombrosos problemes amb què es troben diàriament. Però, abans de l’acceptació d’una nova identitat europea, els pobles de la ex-Iugoslavia volen aconseguir la seva plena afirmació nacional. Les identitats modernes dels habitants dels Balcans centrals i occidentals estan fonamentades en l’exclusió i en un fort arrelament en el passat, que després d’un període llarg d’haver estat diluïdes per l’antinacionalisme socialista, estan vivint una mena de renaixement nacional. Per aquesta raó, hom espera de l’arqueologia i de la història una obra d’enginyeria extraordinària: que construeixin ponts sobre tot aquell temps i identifiquin els pobles moderns amb les identitats antigues d’aquesta regió, amb els seus ancestres pre-otomans, pre-bizantins, pre-romans i pre-històrics – és a dir, 600 anys, 8 segles, 19 segles, més enllà de 3 mil•lennis.

La història de la traducció literària en català

Sembla que les primeres traduccions al català van obeir a necessitats o demandes concretes: cap a la segona meitat del segle XIII van traslladar-se, del llatí, alguns textos jurídics, històrics, mèdics, científics i religiosos.

Alhora, no es pot ometre la poderosa influència que van exercir les lletres itàliques, principalment mitjançant el Petrarca humanista que vindicava l’estudi —i l’exemple— dels clàssics, traduït al català per Antoni Canals i per Bernat Metge. Del 1429 data la versió anònima del Decameró i la primera traducció en vers de la Divina Comèdia, obra del poeta Andreu Febrer.

Com a darrera fita d’una Edat Mitjana esplendorosa, cal assenyalar que el 1478 fou impresa a València una edició completa de la Bíblia, perseguida i destruïda per la Inquisició davant la por d’heterodòxia; era la quarta llengua que n’emprenia una traducció sencera, després de l’alemany, l’italià i el neerlandès.

Al llarg dels segles XVI i XVII, en minvar el prestigi de la llengua autòctona, cada cop més menystinguda per la brillantor de la llengua de la cort, va minvar la necessitat de traduir a una llengua infravalorada, fora dels àmbits populars i menestrals, en què era necessari si es volia arribar a un públic ampli rigorosament monolingüe.

En el tombant del segle XIX al XX va produir-se una «modernització» cultural sense precedents, amb la voluntat d’aixecar una tradició sòlida, i les traduccions es van convertir en un puntal de les lletres catalanes. Per raons diverses, el Quixot, Shakespeare i Wagner van despertar veritables febres literàries.

En les dècades següents, fins a la guerra civil, els escriptors (Josep Carner, C. A. Jordana, Marià Manent, Carles Riba, Josep M. de Sagarra, etc.) van continuar responsabilitzant-se de la feina de traduir: en no existir el traductor professional, i atesa la importància que es conferia a aquesta activitat, semblava reservada a les elits intel·lectuals més preparades i reconegudes.

En la dècada dels vint va aparèixer la Fundació Bernat Metge, de traduccions dels clàssics grecs i llatins, i els primers volums de tres versions de la Bíblia diferents: del Monestir de Montserrat, de la Fundació Bíblica Catalana i del Foment de Pietat Catalana.

Fins al 1936, i d’ençà de la represa literària moderna, havien aparegut prop d’un miler de traduccions. La situació es va capgirar fatalment el 1939, amb la victòria franquista i la llarga dictadura. La prohibició d’editar traduccions en llengua catalana fou rigorosa la dècada dels quaranta i dels cinquanta. L’aparició d’Edicions 62, el 1962, va significar un revulsiu per a la publicació de llibres traduïts, que encara eren signats per escriptors rellevants: M. Aurèlia Capmany, Ramon Folch i Camarasa, Joan Oliver, Manuel de Pedrolo, Josep Vallverdú… De tota manera, uns quants noms començaven a adquirir reputació per les seves versions: Jordi Arbonès, Josep M. Güell, Carme Serrallonga, Bonaventura Vallespinosa…

Després de la frenada de la dècada dels setanta, en la dels vuitanta l’edició de traduccions experimentà una nova revifalla. L’any 1981 Joaquim Mallafrè publicà l’Ulisses de Joyce, versió que és l’origen de l’estudi Llengua de tribu i llengua de polis: bases d’una traducció literària (1991), la primera monografia acadèmica en llengua catalana consagrada íntegrament a la traducció. Amb petites oscil·lacions, aquests darrers lustres la pràctica de la traducció s’ha professionalitzat, a redós d’una estabilització del mercat editorial i, probablement, de l’existència de diversos centres universitaris on s’ensenya traducció.

The languages of the former Yugoslavia

Lauren Nemec, from Applied Language, struck home with this article on the languages of the Former Yugoslavia. I'm in the middle of a learning process that drove me to this area of the world and sometimes I find the linguistic situation here is quite hard to explain. So have a look:

With a collective population of over 23 million (greater than that of Australia), the countries of the former Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia are becoming very attractive to exporters and investors, as they advance toward full EU membership and enjoy increasing stability and prosperity.

Though the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia has ceased to exist, the ramifications of the tumultuous changes that occurred throughout the region in decades past continue even today. One aspect that continues to be a controversial and touchy subject in the region is the language. Today, many people find it difficult to understand the differences between Serbo-Croatian, Croatian, Serbian, Bosnian, Slovenian,Macedonian, Montenegrin, etc.

While the differences between the languages are usually not significant enough to prevent basic understanding between speakers, they can create the potential for significant challenges for a company translating documents targeting this region. If you are interested in selling into these markets, it is important to understand the language complexities of the region.

Serbo-Croatian

For many years, "Serbo-Croatian" was the standard, official language used in the former Yugoslavia. However, some would say it was more of a "pseudo language" that was created by communists to smooth over nationalistic feelings in the region. The term "Serbo-Croatian" is not widely used today; it is sometimes used as an umbrella term to represent a similar family of languages. It is not considered a language, since there are now official, standard and separate languages and many people in the region would find the term to be politically incorrect or offensive.

Serbia and Croatia

Serbian is understood in Serbia, Bosnia, and Croatia. Croatian is understood in Croatia, Bosnia and Serbia. Spoken Serbian and Croatian are virtually interchangeable, meaning Serbs and Croats understand each other. However, due to ethnic tensions between the two groups, and because a translation done in Serbian would be obvious to a Croat (and vice versa) a document targeted for both regions should be done in both languages. The same can be said for Bosnian. Though it can be understood in Serbia and Croatia, a Bosnian translation should be used only for the Bosnian market.

Croats are wary of any foreign influence on Croatian. They tend to be protective and purist regarding their language. As a result, Croatian, unlike Serbian, tends not to use loan words or foreign words, but will instead create its own words. For example, the English word "computer" in Serbian would be "kompjuter" - a phonetic spelling of the English word. Instead of borrowing the foreign term, the Croatians have coined the term "računalo".

Case Study

A company in the telecommunications industry had a document translated from English into Croatian. The translator came back with a question regarding treatment of the English word "router". In his words, "Croatian terminology in [the telecommunications field] is still under development and far from being standardized." The translator presented the customer with a choice of three Croatian terms for the word "router": router, ruter, and usmjernik, representing the foreign term, the phonetically adapted term, and the new Croatian word, respectively.

In this case, the most appropriate term would have been "usmjernik", as it gives proper meaning while also representing the spirit of the Croatian language. As this case study illustrates, languages in the former Yugoslavia are constantly evolving, presenting us with new challenges in selecting the most appropriate terminology.

Bosnia and Herzegovina

The population of Bosnia and Herzegovina is made up of three ethnic groups- Muslim, Croatian, and Serbian. The Muslim group of Bosnia (known as Bosniaks) calls their language Bosnian. However, the Croatian and Serbian groups of Bosnia speak Croatian and Serbian, respectively. All three languages are Bosnia and Herzegovina's official languages. So what is the best language for a document for this market? It depends exactly what is being translated, but unless a client has a very specific target market within Bosnia and Herzegovina, the best bet is Bosnian.

Montenegro

Montenegrins speak one of the newest languages in the world - Montenegrin - which was made the official language of Montenegro in 2007 and standardized in July 2009. Before it was an official language, Montenegrin was considered to be a heavy dialect of Serbian. In fact, most citizens speak Serbian, which used to be the official language. Whether or not "Montenegrin" would become an official language of Montenegro was a very controversial issue in the country for years and it continues to be a hot topic.

Like other languages in the region, Montenegrin is continuously changing. In fact, two new letters were just accepted into its alphabet in July 2009! Until the next census, it may remain unclear whether or not the majority will shift from Serbian speakers to Montenegrin speakers. Translations into Montenegrin can certainly be done and would please speakers and supporters of the new language, but translations into Serbian may also be a good bet for Montenegro.

Macedonia

The primary official language of the Republic of Macedonia is Macedonian. Macedonian is the most widely spoken language in the country, though many other languages are also spoken. Macedonian is sufficient for translation destined for this region. However, the rapidly increasing Albanian population in Macedonia could lead to an increasing need for Albanian-language documents in the future.

Slovenia

Translations for Slovenia should be done in the official language of Slovenian. Macedonians and Slovenians who were educated during the period of Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia will be able to understand both Serbian and Croatian, but others educated after the mid-1980's will not. Therefore, Croatian and Serbian translations will not work for these countries.

Do you ever panic?

Have you ever lost any translation half an hour before the deadline? Fortunately, I haven't, but I've been in panic situations several times. I've lost all the data in my portable hard drive, which I use to back-up the content of my PC. And I have experienced a total collapse of my PC a few times. If that happens right when you're supposed to handle a translation, it will probably mean a farewell to the client.

I'm learning a lot with this new blog experience. I'm reading more blogs from other translators and I try to keep up-to-date. Today I learned a great new tip thanks to Philippa Hammond. I've just discovered a really good way to keep an online updated back-up.

I had heard about these servers for a long time, but after checking a few of them, I came to the conclusion that what they offered was too much for my humble work and too expensive for my Catalan soul. But SugarSync is not just one more storage site. You just have to download a quick application and select the folders you want to have backed up. When you update the contents of those folders, they go directly into your online back-up account, which you can access from any computer with Internet connexion.

They offer a trial option that allows you to store 2 Gb for free and, obviously, that's what I'm trying. I'll keep my work using this system and see if it works for me. Then, I might update to a paying version ;D

Anna Karénina

Como menciona el blog de Babelia, del País, este es el año Tolstoi (1828-1910), el centenario de su muerte. Y la conmemoración ha empezado con una nueva traducción de Anna Karénina editada por Alba.

La traducción, la introducción y las notas corren por cuenta de Víctor Gallego Ballester, quien además de destacar el genio de Tolstoi en esta obra posterior a Guerra y paz, recuerda en su análisis que en la séptima parte de la novela "el discurso deshilvanado de Anna, caótico a la vez que certero, anticipaba ya el estilo de James Joyce". Una obra publicada en 1878 considera maestra o perfecta por autores como Dostoievski, Mann y Nabokov.

Aunque Tolstoi abjurara después de su capacidad para crear arte, supo ver que la felicidad es triste. Pero que en esa tristeza también anida la belleza. ¡Ahí está Anna! Rodeada de oprobio e ilusión. Y lo insinúa el autor ruso desde la primera frase gloriosa: "Todas las familias felices se parecen; las desdichadas lo son cada una a su modo". Palabras que una vez leídas se quedan para siempre con uno. ¿O acaso quién no guarda entre sus recuerdos, o no subrayó en su Anna Karénina, aquellas frases que más le gustaron de la novela?

¿Español o castellano?

Este post es en español (o en castellano) porque el tema que quería tratar afecta a los hablantes de este idioma.

A menudo nos planteamos si debemos utilizar el término español o castellano para hablar de la lengua que se utiliza en España y en otros países de América. Por suerte, las 22 Academias de la lengua española existentes en el mundo han llegado a una decisión concluyente, que se ha publicado en el Diccionario panhispánico de dudas:

«ESPAÑOL. Para designar la lengua común de España y de muchas naciones de América, y que también se habla como propia en otras partes del mundo, son válidos los términos castellano y español. La polémica sobre cuál de estas denominaciones resulta más apropiada está hoy superada.El término español resulta más recomendable por carecer de ambigüedad, ya que se refiere de modo unívoco a la lengua que hablan hoy cerca de cuatrocientos millones de personas. Asimismo, es la denominación que se utiliza internacionalmente (Spanish, espagnol, Spanisch, spagnolo, etc.). Aun siendo también sinónimo de español, resulta preferible reservar el término castellano para referirse al dialecto románico nacido en el Reino de Castilla durante la Edad Media, o al dialecto del español que se habla actualmente en esta región. En España, se usa asimismo el nombre castellano cuando se alude a la lengua común del Estado en relación con las otras lenguas cooficiales en sus respectivos territorios autónomos, como el catalán, el gallego o el vasco».

Esperemos que sirva para poder justificar un uso que en España todavía suscita controversia en determinadas situaciones lingüísticas.

I have just added this functionality to my blog. It is a bit weird, I know, since a translator should not be precisely contributing to machine translation. But it will also give us some perspective on how automatic translation looks like.

Theses programs have evolved an amazing lot in the last years, although the results will never reach the human level. My point is are we all going to get used to poor grammar and automatic translation mistakes in the future? Will we be able to descipher a text in any language just by pressing a button and, most difficult, interpreting the machine's output? Maybe yes.

Meanwhile, I will continue translating my last assignment and try to get the most human final version possible.

Accidental death of a language

Interesting article - Sad news (Font: Transubstantiation)

On February 4th 2010, most of the world’s press reported the death of the Bo language. With the passing of Boa Sr, the last surviving speaker of the language, Bo became extinct. Sadly, this was of no surprise to linguists and anthropologists around the world as the death knell for Bo had been sounded around forty years ago when Boa Sr’s parents passed away. From that point on, Boa Sr was no longer able to speak to anyone else in her native tongue. She was linguistically completely and utterly alone.
With her death, another piece of the human linguistic puzzle disappeared. Unfortunately, the loss of Bo is a blow to our understanding of the Great Andamanese language family, to which Bo belonged. What is interesting about this language family and the Andaman Islands themselves is the fact that some of these languages are believed to be over 60,000 years old. In fact, Bo Sr’s death breaks an alleged link to a culture over 60,000 years old.
The loss of Bo, and the subsequent extinction of all the other Great Andamanese languages, is extremely sad but nonetheless inevitable. As Jean Aitchison said in her Language Change: Progress or Decay (2001:4):
Language, then, like everything else, gradually transforms itself over the centuries. There is nothing surprising in this. In a world where humans grow old, tadpoles change into frogs, and milk turns into cheese, it would be strange if language alone remained unaltered.

There is little we can do to escape the inevitable. Languages change, languages are born, language die. Unfortunately, we live in times where the rate of language death is staggeringly fast. Of the world’s 6,500 or so languages, 3,000 are expected to die within less than one hundred years’ time. There are few cases of successful language revitalisation, Welsh and Hebrew being two remarkable examples. David Crystal in Language Death (2000) gives six factors which may help revitalise a dying language. He suggests the speakers of a dying language:
1. increase their prestige within a dominant community
2. increase their wealth
3. increase their power in the eyes of the dominant community
4. have a strong presence in the education system
5. write down the language
6. make use of electronic technology
If it is possible for a language to be reinvigorated, revitalised and perhaps brought back from near death then the job of linguists is to always support such initiatives. If we are able to preserve language life then by all means let us preserve it. However, sometimes this is not possible and then perhaps our most important task as linguists is to analyse, describe and document; set the dying language down so that we can use knowledge about it to further research into the general understanding of the human condition.
