The skies across Singapore have turned a familiar, murky shade of grey as transboundary haze makes its unwelcome return. Standing along the HarbourFront boardwalk, the usually clear panoramic view toward Sentosa and its iconic cable car lines is heavily obscured by a thick, hazy shroud. The heavy air and reduced visibility serve as a stark visual reminder for residents that the annual air pollution season has arrived.

According to the latest government data from data.gov.sg, the 24-hour Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) in the Central region has climbed into the Unhealthy range at 107. Neighboring regions are also feeling the impact, with regional readings ranging between 77 and 91. The elevated levels indicate a noticeable drop in air quality, prompting many outdoors to check their phones frequently for real-time environmental updates.

With the air condition hitting the unhealthy band, residents are advised to plan their activities carefully using official guidelines. Healthy individuals should reduce prolonged or strenuous outdoor physical exertion, while vulnerable groups - including the elderly, pregnant women, children, and those with respiratory health conditions - should minimize or completely avoid outdoor activities. For immediate, hour-to-hour schedule adjustments, keeping an eye on the 1-hour PM2.5 readings via the myENV app is highly recommended to stay safe.

YES Fest, a key event of the YOUth for Environmental Sustainability (YES) Movement in Singapore, is organized by the National Environment Agency (NEA), and co-created with the YES Leaders Network, with CapitaLand's Funan as the venue partner. It supports SG60, the Singapore Green Plan 2030, and Clean & Green Singapore. The YES Leaders Programme, an anchor program of the YES Movement, empowers youths to lead sustainability projects.

The festival, which is free and open to all ages, aims to engage youth in environmental sustainability through various activities and initiatives. The NEA YES Leaders Programme provides youths with the skills and knowledge to champion sustainability, offering opportunities to network with experts and industry leaders. This aligns with Singapore's commitment to balancing economic development with environmental protection, as highlighted in the Singapore Green Plan and Zero Waste Masterplan.

The YES Fest also serves as a platform to showcase the work of the YES Leaders Programme graduates, who champion diverse environmental causes. The 34 graduates of the second cohort of the YES Leaders Programme were recently recognized for their efforts in promoting sustainability.

Written in 1886, Saint-Saëns’ Carnival of the Animals has been adored by children and adults for many generations. It is a playful and magical work of music imbued with Victorian eccentricity whose fourteen movements each explore a specific or group of animals. For this production Australian composer Quincy Grant artfully reworked and extended the original suites. On stage Circa performers are accompanied by and interact with sumptuously detailed animation created by UK-based Australian video designer Michaela French.

Sus Ads Video Challenge Awards 2021 - Youths Raise Awareness For Environmental Sustainability

Twelve youths who demonstrated exceptional creativity in raising awareness for environmental sustainability clinched awards at the 2021 Sus Ads Video Challenge Awards Ceremony last week. Judged on their content, originality, creativity and technical execution, a total of eight awards were given out at the Awards Ceremony graced by Mr Tan Kiat How, REACH Chairman and Minister of State for Communications and Information & National Development, and Mr Desmond Tan, Minister of State for Home Affairs & Sustainability and the Environment.

Organised by REACH in collaboration with MM2 Entertainment and AsiaOne, the inaugural Sus Ads Video Challenge called upon youths to create an original short video (60 seconds or less) on what they currently do or can do to support sustainability, to encourage others to take action. The Challenge saw a total of 80 entries from 63 individuals and 17 teams, which centred on water and food security, and illustrated how simple lifestyle changes can make a difference in saving the planet.

The awards ceremony also saw a dialogue session providing an opportunity for youths to share their views on sustainability issues. Panellists include REACH Chairman and Minister of State Tan Kiat How; Minister of State Desmond

Tan; filmmaker and actor-host Annette Lee; and environmentalist and digital creator Woo Qiyun. The discussion expounded on Singapore’s sustainability efforts as part of the Singapore Green Plan 2030, and how youths can play a larger role in the sustainability movement.

About The Winners

Amongst the winners in the Student Category is Livia Fin, an illustration design and animation student from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts. Coming in first place, she used 3D modelling and animation to showcase how seemingly harmless daily activities can contribute to carbon emissions. Titled ‘Consumption and Climate Change’, her video calls upon Singaporeans to practise mindful consumption habits.

"I have seen Public Service Announcements on how one can help stop climate change. While these are important, there are just so many of these out there that can be difficult to keep track of. The video I made is similar, but I want to emphasise the importance of doing it as a team because just an individual alone cannot change the world."

In the same category, Temasek Polytechnic student Muhammad Danish Fikri Bin Mohamed Fadil’s “Save Water, Save Money” won the hearts of the audience. The 60-second video, which combined elements of horror and humour, highlighted how the simple act of turning off the tap can help to save water.

"I was inspired by a television advertisement which conveyed the message of saving water in a creative way. Through my video, I hope to bring across the message that everyone has to play a part in being sustainable. There is no need to buy certain items to be sustainable. Instead, we can reflect on our daily habits and incorporate simple actions to save resources."

In the Open Category, youths tackled a wide range of sustainability issues, including energy conservation, waste reduction and recycling. “Pass Me Forward” imagines a letter from a dress to illustrate how fashion can be sustainable, while “Learning Sustainability with Nasir” shows how our sustainable habits can help save the environment.

"I think it is great that Singapore has been pushing forward its sustainability efforts and appreciate that they are listening to youths and the public for ideas on how to move forward with these efforts. Not only that, it is heartening that the Singapore Green Plan 2030 helps provide actionable steps to combat climate change, not only for individuals but also for corporations."

However, it was Leo Ching Ling’s “Sound of Sustainability” that won first place in the Open Category. In a creative take on sustainability, the 20-year-old Ngee Ann Polytechnic graduate used sound with aesthetically pleasing visuals to demonstrate the simple actions one can take to protect the earth.

National Youth Film Awards 2021 - The Pre-Selection

The 7th National Youth Film Awards (NYFA) announced 56 films that showcase a new wave of filmmakers for Singapore’s film industry.

Held by *SCAPE, an organisation that supports the development of Singaporean youths, the platform saw a total of 330 submissions this year. The most prominent themes this year were mental health, self-discovery, as well as the importance of human connection as we battle through the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. Some of the nominated films were also filmed during the Circuit Breaker to showcase how Singaporeans are powering through the unforeseen challenges posed.

One film that showcased the different sides of how Singaporeans battled the Circuit Breaker period is “A Little Closer” by Cheryl Mong from the Student category. The film revolves around Ashwin, a young Indian man, who works as a Stay-Home Caller during the pandemic. While working from home, he forms an unlikely friendship with a Chinese elderly lady who helps him discover the importance of tradition and family.

A second film, “The Cup” by Mark Chua and Lam Li Shuen from the Open Youth category, was highly regarded by the jurors for how the filmmaker took a risk to showcase a different style of storytelling.

The film uses surrealism to showcase the uncertainty and lack of joy Singaporeans felt during the pandemic by telling the story about a man with a brewing machine as his head and how he attempts to improve the bland flavour of his own body. The entire film was shot and produced during the Circuit Breaker, while the filmmakers were confined at home.

Many of the pre-selection jurors highlighted how this year’s submissions included films that are award-worthy.

“Overall, I was very impressed with the diversity and quality of the submissions – from the acting to the scripts and the production values. The nominations were shorts I connected with on a very visceral level. There were times where I was so drawn into a film that I forgot I was watching it as a juror.”

The NYFA will be hosting a closed-door screening of the nominated films for the nominees and media in early July with the winners will be announced during a live online award ceremony on 24 July 2021.

The Liveability Challenge 2020 - The Need For Innovation

A new, global call for game-changing solutions to grow food, package products, and reduce carbon emissions in cities located in the world’s tropical belt was launched in Singapore today. The best proposals stand a chance of securing the grand prize of up to S$1 million in funding, as well as other resources and opportunities to further develop their solutions.

The launch marks the start of The Liveability Challenge, presented by Temasek Foundation, organised by Eco-Business, and convened by Closed Loop Partners, in partnership with Ecosperity Week 2020.

Circular Packaging and Decarbonisation, where the critical need for innovation reflects the size of the

Even with after the waiting time for a food delivery, the Toasted Pita was fragrant with a mild garlic fragrance. Perfect with the rich Baba Ganoush eggplant dip.

On Friday 08 November 2019, Takashimaya Department Store unveiled an exhibition showcasing Christmas designs from 19 teams of students from Temasek Polytechnic’s School of Design.

In a first-time collaboration with Temasek Polytechnic’s School of Design, Takashimaya invited these third-year students to imagine its much-anticipated Christmas packaging for 2019, in line with the campaign theme "Gifts from the Heart".

Singapore Cricket Club - Luncheon With Paul Askew

The Singapore Cricket Club (SCC), the premier sports club on the Padang commemorated Singapore’s Bicentennial with two weeks of events and activities while at the same time raising funds for sports development under the auspices of SportCares.

On 22 October, the SCC featured a Luncheon & Cooking Demonstration with celebrity chef Paul Askew.

Champagne was served in the pre-lunch cocktail reception...

The menu was thoughtfully set out in an elegant folder for each individual diner...

The luncheon was held at The Padang Restaurant with walls decorated with nostalgic paintings of old Singapore...

A huge video screen with live video streaming to allow all to have a close-up view of the cooking demo...

APPETIZER - AMUSE BOUCHE

The first dish for the luncheon was the Amuse Bouche with a theme on onion. Chef Askew put considerable thought into this modest dish. It was only after his explanation did we understand how complicated the multi-layer preparation was.

At the top is a thick mousse of white onion and potato soup. Embedded within the soup was a sprinkling of crispy baby onion rings to create a surprise to the liquid texture, followed by chives and herb oil. Right at the bottom is the coffee-brown caramelised shallot puree, creating a dessert-like finish to the starter dish.

Wine Pairing : Saint Louis Blanc de Blancs Brut, France

Named after King Saint Louis who reigned over France in the Middle Ages, renowned for his charity and much beloved by his people, this aromatic sparkling wine is refreshing with a good balance of green apple flavour.

STARTER - Barramundi Fillet

Freshly-delivered from Jurong Port, the barramundi was roasted to perfection with a crispy skin and semi-seared outer crust. Risotto was stir-fried with aromatic saffron to create that delicious yellow texture with mussels.

The dish was tastefully decorated with a circle of red wine reduction, a simmered liquid made with red wine and vinegar, and dotted with exquisite beluga caviar, which added to the taste and colour of the light-coloured fillet.

It was not every day that every dish you eat is cooked right before you, with each procedure carefully explained in detail. Having such an explanation allowed us to savour each mouthful with greater consideration and appreciation for the thought that Chef Askew has put into it before it is presented to each of us on a plate.

Wine Pairing : Noblesse Sauvignon Blanc 2017, Central Valley, Chile

This was a medium-bodied white wine, bright with golden hues, and aromas of lime and pear with notes of spices. Light on the palate, it delivers a crisp and clean taste with a lingering finish.

MAIN - Honey-Glazed Duck Breast

The main was heavier on the palate with a honey-glazed duck breast with lavender and the flavourful pan-fried foie gras doused with roast orange puree, and served with duck fat potatoes, charred baby gem lettuce, peas, and spring onion.

One important lesson that we've learnt from Chef Askew is the respect he puts into his food. Every possible part of the animal he cooks is put to good use. In this case, the duck fat contributes to the richness of the potatoes, creating a smooth texture for the normally starchy side.

Wine Pairing : Noblesse Merlot 2017, Central Valley, Chile
The Merlot was deep red with hues of purple. The initial taste was tannic, on opening up, aromas of red berries and blackberry with notes of spices can be detected. When paired with the duck, the fruit-laden intensity of the red can be savoured.

DESSERT - Pavlova

Ending it all is a sweet Pavlova of gin-soaked blackberries, raspberries and strawberries with Turkish Delight ice cream and white chocolate soil.

The Peranakan opened its doors in June 2016 and it is currently the only traditional Straits Chinese cuisine restaurant along the Orchard Road belt. Rhododendrons are flowering bushes well-loved by gardeners around the world for their showy flowers that bloom in clusters from red and pink, to yellow and white. Some of the varieties of rhododendrons to look out for include: Rhododendron "Meadow Lemon", whose red-hued buds eventually become pale yellow flowers....

Rhododendron "Mount Loma Prieta" has pink flowers with apricot-yellow centres...

Rhododendron "Sierra Sunset" has bold blooms that combine orange, yellow and cream tones...

The smallest Rhododendron species - Rhododendron lapponicum and Rhododendron drumonium, range between 10-100 cm, while the tallest is reported to be over 30 metres in height! Rhodeodendrum arboretum, also known as Tree Rhododendron, discovered on Mt Japfu in India, holds the Guinness World Record for being the tallest Rhododendron at 32.91 metres at the point of its discovery, and it's still growing!

The floral display also features more than 10 varieties of azaleas, a close cousin of the rhododendron. These rhododendrons and azaleas were brought in from New Zealand. The 9th PropertyGuru Asia Property Awards (Singapore) gala dinner and awards presentation ceremony was held last weekend at the St. Regis Singapore.

A total of 46 awards were presented, with UOL Group emerging as the biggest winner of the evening, sweeping up 12 trophies, including the coveted Best Developer award, Best Condo Development (Singapore), and the special awards for CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility), Sustainable Development, and Design and Construction.

The prestigious award programme expanded this year to include four new categories – Best Heritage Development (1953 by Oxley Holdings Ltd), Best Mega-Scale Condo Development (Parc Clematis by Sing-Haiyi Gold Pte Ltd), Best Strata Housing Development (Watercove by Bukit Sembawang Estates Limited), and Best Co-Working Space Design – to reflect growing trends in the Singapore real estate sector, as well as to recognise more quality projects in niche segments. The National Gallery was given the Special Recognition for Public Facility.

The UOL Group was commended for pushing the limits on design, experimenting and succeeding with interior and style possibilities and leading the way in architectural perfection, according to the independent panel of judges.

One of the most coveted special awards was the 2019 Singapore Real Estate Personality of the Year,

which was given to Kemmy Tan, Chief Executive Officer of M+S Pte Ltd, the team behind the acclaimed Marina One and DUO projects, which were both completed in 2017. Through Tan’s vision and leadership, she has successfully brought vibrancy to the Marina Bay Pilot Business Improvement District.

Kemmy is the second female recipient of the special award in Singapore, following Celine Tang of SingHaiyi Group in 2018. The recipient was chosen by editors of the PropertyGuru Property Report magazine.

All the winners in Singapore will compete at the region-wide PropertyGuru Asia Property Awards Grand Final to be held this November in Bangkok, for a chance to be crowned the "Best in Asia".

The inaugural edition held in Singapore features specially-curated signature hawker dishes by 12 hawkers from both Singapore and Malaysia, from 05 October to 06 October 2019.

This year’s culinary display is centred around the heartwarming stories of family and tradition behind each dish that the hawkers presented. Hawker Culture by Maybank not only evokes the convivial atmosphere of our beloved street food culture, but also pays tribute to family and heritage - the passing on of time-honoured culinary traditions from one generation to the next.

Dine amongst replicas of heritage shophouses and be transported back through time to a scene from yesteryear, where hawkers plied the streets and customers from all walks of life gathered for affordable bowls of hawker delights...

Kaw Kaw Burger (Kuala Lumpur)

What began as a little street stall in the residential Wangsa Maju district has become wildly popular in burger-loving circles, with waiting times purportedly stretching to 3 hours. Fans obsess over their homemade patties and sauces, of which they will be presenting their take on the chicken Ramly burger and Kaw Kaw’s first ever Impossible Burger.

Kwong Wah Cendol (Petaling Jaya)

These third-generation hawkers have taken over a business which has been in the family since 1958. Almost everything, even the ice, is made inhouse. They will even be bringing their secret blend of gula melaka to Singapore for Hawker Culture.

Not your regular nasi lemak, this rendition resembles what is more commonly known as nasi kandar. Hailing from Alor Setar, Uncle Ong’s journey first started as a passion for curries over 35 years ago, when he learned how to make curries from his Indian friends.

His legacy has now passed on to his son, who has expanded to the restaurant in Kuala Lumpur. He will be dishing up fried chicken on a bed of his signature nasi kunyit, infused with fragrant ginger.

Uncle Robert has been dancing behind the wok for 35 years, churning out plate after plate of hearty, intensely flavourful char kway teow in what’s closer to the Penang style than the dark dish Singaporeans are used to. Full of wok hei and laden with slivers of preserved Chinese sausage and prawns, and topped with a sunny side-up egg, this is a plate not to be missed.

Samy & Min Bak Kut Teh (Kuala Lumpur)

With over 25 years of bak kut teh braising under their belts, Samy & Min will be presenting their aromatic, herbal rendition of this hawker classic with tender, fall-off-the-bone ribs and melting pork belly, paired with a dip of chopped fresh garlic and chilli padi in light soya sauce for an extra punch.

Fu Zhou Poh Hwa Oyster Cake (Singapore)

Oyster cakes are fast disappearing from Singapore’s food scene, and Fu Zhou Poh Hwa is one of the last hawkers selling this traditional delight. Having helped her grandmother sell oyster cakes for over 20 years, Jenny decided to open her own stall in 1986 in honour of her late grandmother.

Pandan Gardens Fishball Noodles (Singapore)

Founded in 1982, this stall has now been taken over by a new generation of enterprising young folk who have expanded their parents' humble business into three more outlets. Known for their springy yet firm fishballs, their offerings for Hawker Culture include their namesake fishball mee pok and utterly rich laksa.

Tuan Yuan Bak Kut Teh (Singapore)

Tuan Yuan was born of a father’s tough love towards his children, who decided that they should not ride on the coat-tails of famed Ya Hua Bak Kut Teh, his own bak kut teh establishment. This new-gen bak kut teh is cooked in the Teochew style with a sharp, peppery bite owing to the hours-long process of boiling pork bones with old garlic and specially-imported Sarawak white pepper.

Rong Guang BBQ

The second-generation Botak Joe took over the reins of his family’s business in 2000, and made a name for barbecued seafood. Their signature rendition of stingray is barbecued with an exclusive sambal which is like no other.

Drinks

The drinks stall will feature traditional hand-pulled tea, teh tarik, and what promises to be an Instagram-worthy signature bandung ais krim soda (bandung and ice cream soda drink). Hit the bar for ice-cold Peroni beer, as well as a wide selection of specially-curated Italian wines to satisfy every boozy desire.

The event was held last weekend at the Flower Field, Gardens By The Bay. Dishes were priced at $4, $6, $8, $10 and $12.
