Liverpool Music Week

With the Matthew Street Festival now a mere spec on the horizon, please step up Liverpool Music Week. In my opinion a much better event and one that is seemingly growing in stature the more it matures. Venues around the city will host the best of Liverpool??s original music, or unsigned bands as some people like to call them. A variety of music on offer to make any city in the world jealous. My pick of the bunch to look out for would be, 28 Costumes, Hot Club de Paris, The Neon Hearts, Ambulance, Alterkicks, The Veras, Son of Dave, I could go on. Rather than listing all of the venues, please take a trip to the official site and find all the info you require ?? Make the effort, head out this week. ?? www.liverpoolmusicweek.co.uk/

Capital Of Culture, My Arse?

A chance to shine, a chance to glow, an opportunity to let the city grow. These were the words I heard when the announcement came that Liverpool had been awarded the status, Capital of Culture 2008. People rejoiced and very important people crawled out of the woodwork and from behind their desks to whoop and holla. For many, the occasion passed by like a wet fart on a misty morning, not really knowing what the hell it meant and how it would affect their day to day life in the city. I saw a chink of light, the sound of a faint fanfare, a chance that this could be an opportunity for the powers that be, to really help music in the city.

We are now hurtling towards 2007, and before we know it, 2008 will be upon us. I of course look at this from a music perspective, what it will mean for the creatives of Liverpool I am still unsure. I haven??t seen any real dramatic impact so far, and as it stands, I cannot see anything coming down this rusty line. I am by nature a positive person, I have a forward thinking outlook on life in general, and when it comes to new music in the city I always look ahead , rather than at the floor. However, it has come to a point were I am now thinking that maybe it is ??My Arse??. I shall tell you what I have seen so far. I have seen and met a team that has been brought in to co ordinate the thrust for 2008. I stare with disbelief at the lack of knowledge about the local music scene it posses, I am amazed at the ??interface?? it has created, an interface that is supposed to allow a smooth process to operate. A hands off machine that feels cold and unwilling to have its eyes opened on ideas and suggestions.

We still haven??t rolled a six and moved off the start. We still have people in the city with ideas to help music grow and willing to give time to implement them, all they need is financial support or a nudge in the right direction; I haven??t seen that happen as yet. I see the organizations put in place to facilitate it, but I don??t see any action or commitment. All I see is a mountain of forms, relentless mountains of forms. Questions about Business Models and how is this going to make money. Not how is this going to give bands & artists opportunities to progress, but how is this idea going to make a profit. Read that again, how is this idea going to make a profit.

Is that what 2008 is? A profit making machine or is it there to help a city breathe new life and show what they have to the world.

September

Holy mother of perl , its September already. If you were one of the lucky ones to be at the MM3 gig , you will know what a sucess it was , our thanks to bands who played and people who attended in their numbers. The Matthew Street Festival has passed us by , again the 'New Music Stage ' was well attended, I would have liked more bands to have had the opportunity to play , but alas our input on bands for the stage was ignored.Long may the stage stay at the MSF , but please organsisers , please hear the call of 'outsiders' when looking to create the line up , a lot of people missed out who should not have.

People looking for a real taste of new music in Liverpool should head over to Liverpool Music week in November , a whole week of bands around Liverpool , I will post up venues and dates etc nearer the time.

To have a look at some pictures from the now , infamous MM3 gigs , please go here

Merseymusic Site Hacked

The Merseymusic site has once again been hacked. What motivates someone to do this , what gain is there achieved to bring down a site that is there to help and not make profit.

I can only assume it has been done out of jealousy by someone who sees us a threat ?

We wear our heart on our sleeve and say things how we see it , if something is not right we say it on our free speech forum , maybe some people don??t like that , or it could be a random attack , although it seems coincidental that it has happened again and on a run up to a Merseymusic gig.

However , we have very clever people at Merseymusic who will once again spring us back into life in a short timescale

To voice your support , please head to our forum ( which is fine) and give us a shout

Merseymusic GIG

Ahoy shipmates, I bring good news to your shores, arggghhhh swagger me timbers and get me a wench...um , well I do have good news. Merseymusic will be holding the much anticipated MM3 gig on August the 23rd at Korova bar in Liverpool City Centre.

The Merseymusic gigs are always eventful, and due to public demand and my need to get out more the MM3 gig has been born. Our first gig (MM1) saw none other than the Prince of Brunei in attendance with his 10 minders. Plus a venue that was 2 foot under water an hour before the start. The Second Merseymusic gig, MM2 funnily enough, saw a pissed off drummer wrestle with an Italian student in the middle of their set. Therefore, we have high hopes for the whopper that is MM3.

We are currently in talks with a number of bands clambering to be on the gig. We are open to bribes and good looking women. Stay tuned to this blog for further details
You cannot miss this gig, if you do, you will never forgive yourself

Ill be back with details

Hey It's May

Being one of the people at the Helm of Merseymusic can be a rough buy enjoyable ride. Do you know we are one of the major promoting sites for Liverpool unsigned music , actually in Liverpool , and still some people are not aware of us.

How can this be ?

Well as you may or may not know we run as a non profit company, therefore , our hands can be tied on certain things like advertising budgets and project ideas. So we look for external assistance. A great example of help that can be given is the IC.LIVERPOOL site. Since we began our column they have been totally supportive in our quest and have backed everything we have done - a true supporter of unsigned music in the city. However we still seek other platforms of promotion for our bands. Lets take an example . The Matthew Street Festival, one of the worlds most visited music events. Last year a new music stage was brought in and was a success , but scope was there for expansion on ideas and a bit more venture with musical taste. Of course this is something Merseymusic wants to assist with , however , band selection and stage organization, stage compares are seemingly shipped to other sources. Like venue owners ? , obscure record label owners ?, basically jobs for the boys , which will inturn not give the forward momentum the new stage requires. We are not looking for recognition , but involvement. We have nothing to gain except more promotion for Liverpool bands. I can safely say no other org in Liverpool knows better than us what bands are out there that need to be heard.

Hey Its May

Teddies and Rattle

Hello fine people , I do hope you are all well. With the clocks going forward and that summer feeling slowly creeping in , its good to look ahead into 2006. I am however currently banging my head against a rather large brickwall. As you may or may not know Merseymusic is a non profit company , which means WE MAKE NO MONEY. We wear our heart on our sleeve , work in a transparent way so everyone can see what our goals are , why we juggle our lives around the beast that is Merseymusic. All we ask in return from this fair city is a bit of support from organizations that have been set up to do so and local media. At the start of the year we had many plans laid and what goals we wanted to reach to help Liverpool artists that little bit more. However thus far all we have been given are empty promises and false hopes. We see money being given to organizations that don??t even focus their efforts in the Liverpool area and make a profit for self gain. So at the moment I am a bit down and need to asses which way we want to go - till the next time

Its March!

Ok Ok, we wont talk about my new years resolution, must try harder. I am here now!

It's March already can you believe that ? Merseymusic have been very busy with various avenues of moving forward with our site and services. It is looking very hopeful and all will be revealed here when it happens in the very near future. Have you been to a gig yet in 2006 . NO ? , shame on you. Get yourself out and about , try a Thursday around town , the Zanzibar would be a safe bet to catch some great music. Its also good to see that Las Vegas ( the old arcade off Lime Street) are back up and running after a small blip. By all accounts these guys are great to deal with if your a band and the venue has a good set up , keep on rockin Las Vegas!

Out

2006

 2006

I wish I could start my 2006 entry will hopeful blessings about this year in the city??s unsigned music scene. I am however at a low with what lays ahead. My main concern is with the support in the city from organizations that are here to ' support 'unsigned music. To me it seems a mish mash , a cauldron of lost direction and no one has grabbed it by the scruff of the neck and said ' ok , this is what we are going to do. It will keep plodding along , zig zagging this way and that until probably 2007 and everyone will claim they have been supporting unsigned music since year one. To be honest reader , 2008 wont be a great thing for our music unless it is done correctly and so far i have yet to meet anyone of the bodies in charge who have convinced me they can do it. At this rate 2008 will be like snow falling on Christmas day , it will be wonderful , however come the day after boxing day it will be a field of slush. Please liverpool , can we get something do properly ?
