With Director Joel Lamangan, Director of 'Patikol', which won the Best Film for Children category in the Cinemalaya 2011. It was definitely worth my ticket and audience vote!

Plato once said that "an unexamined life is not worth living". I agree. To examine your life and make sense of all the flurry of one's experiential existence, there are few usual choices --- you write a book, you plant a tree, you serve your country and you earn your keep. The last two is easy. The first two is sort of tricky as one shuffles life's many mysteries and responsibilities day by day. Until they are totally forgotten and not mostly done.

Last January 23, I decided to walk my talk and become a Filipino in my own little way. I joined a company outing to plant a tree in Silang, Cavite with my road running club mates at 6 a.m. I left my sleeping household at 5:00 a.m. to get to the bus that will bring us there. I was sleepy and cramped because my legs were too long for the bus seat but it was worth it! What was most memorable about it? I get sunburned but I planted five narra saplings and three kamagong saplings. Yes, the number may not be impressive but it was some feat for someone who has to trek, to shovel dirt, to plant the sampling, to protect it from elements and to water it for the first time against a migrane-inducing heat of the sun.

Why torture myself? We started living green years before it became in fashion, even before SM and Landmark started selling canvass shopping bags or the use of paper bags in Muntinlupa City became in business policy. I use scratch papers for notepads and notebooks which for sometime our office assistant taught that I was really stingy that she gave me notepads from National Bookstore on Christmas. I grew up in a household that recycle. We use shopping bags as linings for trash bins and we fold them in tiny triangles to save space. Looking back, that assistant was no different to our former house help who was helping me once unwind broken electronic appliances into their plastic, metal and aluminum parts prior to disposal. "Ate, mahirap na ba talaga panahon? Sabi ni Mama mo pati yung egg containers ipunin kasi dadalhin natin. [Pregnant pause as she watch me tinkering with the electronic parts. NOTE: Honestly, I like dismantling electronic appliances, recycling or not, because of the cornucopia of tiny, insignificant looking pieces that makes up a whole may it be a fan, a toaster or what not. It gives me great perspective on things and not to mention, therapeutic.] Pero gusto ko pa magtrabaho at high school na anak ko." I had to assure her that our household finances are okay and we just like recycling because with her help she can buy her extra load to call her loved ones in the province and be kinder to the environment. Hence, planting a tree that day made sense and it was a 360 perspective of the values I learned through the years.

On our way back from Silang, my running buddies decided to watch Cinemalaya at the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP). My body was really sore all over but hey, lubus-lubusin na. So, I nodded in agreement and followed them silently. My friend, Bryan, had to chat me up constantly so I do not fall asleep from the air-conditioned lobby of the CCP from sheer exhaustion as we were waiting for our turn at the film screening. The lines were crazy. I never thought that Indie has grown this big in Philippine cinema.

We were thinking of seeing 'Ang Sayaw ng Dalawang Kaliwang Paa' as first choice with the hush hush that it was a breakthrough film that actress Jean Garcia has to take special dance lessons for the role but realized as Atty. Mitch read the catalogue aloud that it was a gay film. The boys raised their eyebrows and chimed together with "next...". Another interesting choice was 'Lapit na u, ligo na me', a film adaption of a short novel in bookstores now. We scrapped it because the story is too predictable and due to the sort of jejemon mentality as can be deduced from the title itself. I was one of the loudest who protested of wasting our money on it. Next choice was 'Ang Babae sa Septic Tank' with comedianne Eugene Domingo in the lead role. There were reports that she was hospitalized from doing the movie. From what? From falling inside the septic tank, of course! With all that dirt, there must be something. Curious, we gave Glenn and Bryan a unanimous vote to buy the tickets but after almost a heartbeat, they were back. "Guys, sorry. Sold out. Ang haba rin ng pila sa waiting list for all screenings till Sunday." What? Marge and I said that maybe with that turnout there will be extra screenings in the future.

So, we decided to go to our next choice --- the movie 'Patikol' by Director Joel Lamangan. It was starred by Marvin Agustin, Allen Dizon, Ciara Sotto, Dimples Romana, Jaime Pebangco (Best Supporting Actor), Martin delos Santos, Angellie Nicholle Sanoy and Jeon Macatangay.

Honestly, the movie description was so uninspiring and did not do justice to the heart and research done on the film. I was glad we decided to watch it. It was an eye-opening film about the lives of children caught in the long-standing conflict between the military, the MILF and Abu Sayaff in Patikul, Sulu. We all cried at the heart wrenching scenes with Bryan and Marge most affected since they are both from South Cotabato and Cagayan de Oro, respectively. They said they relate to every scene of the movie.

There was a standing ovation as the credits rolled up at the end of the film. Minutes later, it was announced that our precious tickets entitled us a 20% discount at participating restaurants in Harbor Square. But I made up my mind. I smiled and slipped by ticket stub in Patikul's voting box. This film deserves my vote and deserves a voice. Some of my friends placed their ticket stubs, too. I guess this made Joel a happy guy and chatted with us for a while. I thank him for his genius and congratulated his scriptwriters for such a brilliant film adaption of Kristoffer Bragado's novel (2010 Carlos Palanca winner) of the same title. We left CCP with swollen eye glands and teasing each other but really satisfied.

True enough, 'Ang Babae sa Septic Tank' was screened in SM cinemas the following week with Star Cinema footing the film screening for the big screen. No surprise there. So, we decided to feed our curiosity if all the media furor was true and watch it at MOA SM Cinema on July 29.

Personally, I think the film was creative and Eugene Domingo was in her usual hilarious self but it did not have the heart of 'Patikul' and her getting dunked in all those shit so the movie can be rightly titled as such was quite lame.

Buti na lang me seaside na sa MOA! We bent our frustration on seafood at seaside, instead.

I learn to swim butterfly and breast stroke by watching how the dolphins swim at Discovery Channel.

iii. Watch a confused Merkat.

iv. Be amazed at the flaming human torch at the High Dive Pool Diving Show.

v. Laugh at how a sea lion steals a kiss from a lady.

vi. Clap appreciatively after a good animal trick.

vii. Savor your favorite summer delight. Mine is always ice cream on a sugar cone.

viii. Choose your favorite stuffed souvenir.

ix. Find Nemo (anemone fish) in his natural habitat (sea anemones).

2. EXTREME ZIP LINING AND WALL CLIMBING AT EXTREME ADVENTURE, SUBIC

Extreme Adventure offers a different thrill especially for those who's not afraid to get their pants dirty and be a little risk taker with the 70 feet vertical drop in the middle of the thick foliage.

We hiked to the first station, for the first drop.

The tour guide asked, "Sinong gustong mauna?". The group fell into an impregnable silence as if the tooth fairy appeared in our midst and tried to steal our tongues too. Silence. Exchange of fearful glances. My heartbeat was like a frantic rain on a tin roof, deafening even to my ears. Hindi ko kaya ito! I raised a tentative hand to silence my crazy heartbeat. Manong tour guide smiled admirably for assumed courage on my part. There were laudible sighs of relief. Kung alam lang nila! I was the first in line not entirely because I am the bravest but because I did not want to prolong the agony of being paralyzed by fear while those ahead of me shriek as they plunge to the depths. Kaloka kaya yun! I might as well be the first to do that and drive them all crazy!

"Manong ang taas! Naka-lock po mabuti yung harness?" I remembered asking the attendant three times to neutralize my fear before jumping off the cliff.

The first time I jumped and let go of the harness at the station, I felt all my insides were gone. This was so scarily high and I plunged faster!

At the bottom of the last drop. Hayy!! Natapos rin...

We're a little bit demented I admit. As if the extreme zip line is not enough, we tried wall climbing also.

Subic Summer Adventure - Part 1

Despite the Nuclear Radiation scare in Japan, global anticipation of a series of earthquakes affecting countries in the Pacific Ring of Fire (including the Philippines) and La Nina threats due to progressing climate change, there is one thing for sure --- summer is officially here.

For once, I'd like to forget these talks about these glaring realities or senseless fears of doomsday and just enjoy summer the way we are all supposed to since we were kids: going out there and frolicking in the sun!

Some things on top of my mind include and strongly recommend are:

1. GO CARTING IN SUBIC

The former US Naval Base has transformed itself into a major tourist destination and adventure haven.

Go carting is one pasttime you can enjoy in the sun with friends if you are speed crazy like me. One of the key places to check is Le'mans Go Kart Track.

Le'Mans opens daily 10am-8pm.

National Geographic Earth Day Run: Merzy's Notes

"Kaya ko kaya?"

I asked my friend Angie who I ran with together with her sister Marilou. My apprehension came from prior race experience this year, barely a month prior to the NatGeo Earth Run. I felt my toenails almost died when we participated in the last company fun run along the Roxas Boulevard from the impact of running.

I blamed the runned down asphalt along the Westin Philippine Plaza and PICC. I blamed my old Nike RunAir shoes. I blamed my weight - I was too out of shape from my old running self from too much paper work, free food from meetings and sleep depravation. The truth was, I lacked the preparation for the run. I visited the gym and ran the threadmill three days before the race. I should thank my lucky stars, I did not collapsed or suffered any muscle cramps during the race unlike other runners. In times like this being a fishivore helps a lot [NB: Thank you Omega 3 for the much needed oxygen haha.]

Lunchbreak of April 16: Angie and I went to the Mall of Asia (Timex Shop) to register. Another friend, Leng Martinez, already decided not to join because gun start for the run was 5:55 a.m.. It's too early on a lazy Sunday morning for her. She said. Me too, I thought but seeing my thighs looking like illegally cut logs from Isabela I tagged along with Angie. "Sige na nga". What is one Sunday if it would mean cellulite free legs for life. Since it would be for a good cause, Angie and I decided to pursue running. I could not believe the line of people wanting to register. They came in groups --- mostly registering in 3K and 5K categories. Since demand was high, we ran out of shirts our sizes so we end up having grey ones with "L" label.

Noticing the sad look on our faces, the staff offered to register us under the 10K category since medium sizes were still available and the color was black. "Ganda kayo sa black Ma'am kasi maputi kayo...", his words were syrupy sweet for a 10K torture. I am already half-persuaded to register in the 10K but my friend Angie felt, we should still stay in our categories for now since we stopped running for a long time. "OK", I said. We went home, not happy with our running shirts, but excited about the race.

April 17, 8:30 p.m.: Watched the teaser ad of the NatGeo race in the National Geographic channel emphasizing that it was a run for the environment and to denounce the repeat of similar devastations of Typhoons Ondoy ("Ketsana") and Pepeng ("Parma"). I stopped bitching about my oversized shirt and went to sleep after 30 mins of sit ups and stretching exercises at the foot of my bed.

April 18, 4:30 a.m.: I woke up and had my big breakfast of bread, cereals and saging tundan (good for preventing muscle cramps. banana is a staple food for runners). I quickly showered and changed into my running clothes.

5:00 a.m.: I'm still looking for my old running shoes in the shoe rack completely forgotten I brought it upstairs before going to bed. My kitten, Benouch, decided to make himself comfy inside my shoe and brought it underneath the bed. Far, far underneath the bed. In trying to pull it out, I felt a muscle twitched but ignored it since I am not sure how fast I could drive from my place to MOA in 55 minutes. Mentally, I was already counting the stop lights and pot holes on the way and alloting at least 5 minutes each. Things you do to get fit. Hayyy!

5:15 a.m.: I counterflowed half of the trip along Alabang-Zapote Road and prayed dearly that I make it. I was pushing 90kmph, I needed to make it. But my gas is nearing the dreaded "E". I was torn pushing it and drive it on reserve but realizing that gas stations were located along Macapagal if I push it. I could gone empty along Emilio Aguinaldo expressway. I imagined the red siren lights, the wrecker truck of PNCC. No, that would be too embarrassing. I stopped in the closest gas station and had my car filled. 5, 10... I was ready to snapped at the service attendant who was probably half asleep and taking his sweet time in filling up my tank. Sweet Lord, I need to be a speed racer to make it. I almost forgot my receipt in my haste.

5:35 a.m.: I drove past the iconic revolving globe replica of MOA going to IMAX where we'll clock in for the run. There were a lot of people already --- spectators, men placing the markers and the cones, police officers and guards --- they were just everywhere. It was semi-pandemonium of morning rush. They did not allow me to pass through because of the run. "I am one of the runners!", I wanted to shout out of exasperation but I smiled and asked the route where I can park. It's bad for my system to loose too much steam early on. My eyes were getting bigger when the police told me where I can park. San Miguel by the Bay? That's at least 15 minutes away from IMAX, parking and walking. But I had no choice...

5:54 a.m.: I made it by running like a mad woman and I'm exhausted already when the race has not even gun started. "Things you do to get fit". "Cellulite free legs for life, yes!" "I can do it!" These were the consoling thought bubbles running through my head. Gez, I was too far out and there were at least 2,000 runners in our category. Where is Angie and her sister? I am exhausted and alone in a crowd. It was a bummer but the idea of quitting after all that pain is non-negotiable.

5:55 a.m.: Gun start. Runners dashed off. I paced myself since I had my fair share of furious run from San Miguel by the Bay to IMAX. "Where is the water station?"

6:00 a.m.: I found my rhythm and started to enjoy the run. Circling MOA and going past that Petron station in Macapagal and back seems daunting but kind of fun and doable. I kept pushing but I was a little bit distracted by large tarpolins advertising sale dates.

6:20 a.m.: I ran past Angie and greeted her. Told her that will wait for her at the finish line. I have not seen her sister yet. Maybe already far out.

6:25 a.m.: Stopped for nourishment at the water station. Stretched and enjoy seeing some runners wearing funny outfits for a statement. There was this lady in Goth black attire with a flag saying, "Girls who break rules, rocks!" Things you do to get fit. I smiled and ran along.

7:37 a.m.: Reached the finished line. I finished the race and clocked in at 43:27. I was drenched and exhausted but without too much muscle cramps. Maybe being in shopping haven is therapeutic in a way for me. Out of my best time but still within the 30-45 range under my category. I felt good I was able to run commercial races again. My first for 2010.

Angie and her sister finished around 51 and 55 minutes later. I enjoyed waiting for them by celebrity watching. Karylle and Maricel Laxa were really fit. So is Illac Diaz, who came because SECON was one of the sponsors.

We had our breakfast in McDonald's near Fitness First with Maricel Laxa's kids, her mom Mrs. Ilagan and Bing Loyzaga's kids (who ran in 3K categories) in a nearby table.

We enjoyed the rest of the sunshine and the morning breeze until around 8:00 a.m. before we head home. As I start my car's engine, I was humming U2's "Beautiful Sunday" in my head. I will deal about that twist on my ribs later.

Bolinao Pre-Labor Day Weekend

Two years after the subprime crisis, no news of any upward movement in real wages and no discernable hope of change from the plethora of leaders running in the upcoming May 2010 polls, my eclectic bunch of friends (we have an astronomer, law students, defense officers, writers and foreign service officers among our group --- mukha nga lang di sila seryoso : P) and I decided to spend the pre-Labor Day Weekend beachcombing in Bolinao, Pangasinan.

How to get there?

*You can drive for 4-6 hours (fortunately, we have no volunteer!) using your own vehicle.

*Commute via Victory or 5-Star bus routes and hire a tryke for P300 per vehicle to tour you around.

How much is the damage to property?

*Backpacking style like we did: P2,000 - 2,500 per head (exclusive of personal out-of-pocket expenses)

*Boring but luxe vacay via tour group: P5,000 - P10,000 per head

Birthday Dinner at Amici Restaurant

Amici Signage.

Kay and I decided to hold our joint birthday blowout dinner at the Amici Restaurant beside Don Bosco School in the corner of Chino Roces Avenue (formerly Pasong Tamo) and A. Arnaiz Avenue last September 11. [Note: Not to commemorate the horrific 9/11 attacks of the Al-Qaeda in 2001 or silent protest for Imelda Marcos' award from CCP but just plain coincidence that we are all available to dine and have fun. ]

I recommended the place since I used to eat here with family members after hearing mass at the Don Bosco church few years back (when Amici really feels like a school canteen then... ha ha). Further, the place has a laid back ambiance, quite unassuming and a 'homey' feel to it compared to other posh restaurants in Makati where you have to dress up and pay too much without getting what you want in terms of food 'gusto'.

It was also raining cats and dogs so it makes sense that we spend the night with good food, jovial mood and heartfelt conversations.

And, Amici never fails to meet my expectations of a simple but tasteful dining experience.

I feel like inside Willy Wanka's Chocolate Factory. Only that, my choices would be a wide array of yummy gelati (original recipe came from Salesian friars of Don Bosco of Italy).

Spurring Economic Growth

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) released a contentious forecast recently that the country's economic growth would be flat (as in ZERO?!?) for 2009. To spur the domestic economy, we decided to spend our money (since investing is so traumatic watching the bloodbath of reds in world's indices) and eat to our heart's content at our favorite resto: Saisaki.

The girls were all smiles after an afternoon of sushi and tempura (YUM!).

A Day in the Life of My Cats

Animal biologists and veterinarians explained that cats, unlike dogs, do not live in packs and mostly individualists. Although they do not necessarily recognize pack structures, they see their pet owners as family members. If your cat kills a bird, a cockroach or a mice (Matilda's expertise) and brings it home and drops at your slipper (normally to pet owners that feed them) --- experts believe that it is their way of honoring you by having you share in the kill. Instead of shrieking and scolding the cat like my mother always does when she finds carcasses in her slippers and favorite chair, pet the cat and simply dispose the dead bodies and do not allow them to roam in your bedroom unattended (Imagine, sleeping with a dead cockroach or mice on your pillow).

Pochai, an avid hunter, normally bites her prey on the neck. She normally hunts outside and brings it home as an offering to my mother.

I grew up in a household always filled with animals (we even had a piglet for a pet before) and we make an effort to be an educated owner by having them vaccinated, giving them proper care (buying them a suitable home to play with) and nutrition, training them and letting them live fuller lives (kung trip nilang manghuli ng mga bubuwit, ipis at langaw sa kanto at kapitbahay, fine...). We just make sure they don't kill our neighbor's pets (small birds).

It has been our tradition that we are together for the holidays. My married brothers come home with their family and spend Christmas with us and some cousins also come for a visit. The house is always a riot with kid's toys and shrieking little voices but it is always filled with good memories. After Christmas, they go home to spend New Year's in their place so MJ's birthday is normally spent either in their place or outside in a restaurant. This year, we decided to host it at home and as one of his de facto godmothers, I led the preparations and invitations. Boy, it was tiring but fun! He even had a slumber party afterwards with more than 20 kids (mostly coursins and friends.)

It was a landmark Christmas Party celebration for the OSPD officers and staff since it was the first that we have a theme and everyone came out in a costume for the merry-making.

The food and the venue were simple but it was a day filled with laughter, fun and bitter sweet memories (we said goodbye to Sir Fil Duman, who transferred back to ED ).

"Paano ba yan? Forever Manny fan na tayo?". Daisy's forwarded text message not only amused me to bits but nailed my fascination with the world's best pound-for-pound boxer and Mexican destroyer. The boxer's latest bout with the crowd favorite, one-time Olympic champion and ever charming, Oscar 'Golden Boy' dela Hoya not only catapulted him to the world's center stage, sent dela Hoya to possible retirement but also provided a momentary unity for all Filipinos (well for once, the roads are clear, people don't mind sitting side by side in crowded restaurants and politicians stop their usual nonsense bickering). Imagine, what boxing can do for this country? If only those politicians hugging the much deserved limelight from Manny in an aim to snatch a face recall for the 2010 elections (it is just plain revolting...) will disappear. Hayyy!

Pacman's (Pacquiao's monicker describing his boxing offense on the ring) throngs of avid fans while smiling on their winning bets (some husbands even got a Lacoste shirt from their wives. Congrats, Joven!), had been somewhat disappointed for a TKO or in layman's terms; dela Hoya for being such a wimp for giving up the fight just like that. But if I would be pocketing $60M surely and had the chance of promoting Manny's fight next time, why would I risk having some jaws dislocated and not giving the little man his much-deserved victory? Personally, I think dela Hoya played it smart...really smart!

In last Sunday's fight, it was evident that dela Hoya's weight loss to get to the 147lbs weight limit has taken a toll on his middle as it fell prey to Pacman's relentless body punches. Tsk, tsk...never a good turn out even if you managed to loose all that weight. Weight watchers, beware!

I never really liked Manny's motivation why he dabbled and failed in politics, why he disillusioned himself into TV hosting (Pinoy World Records at GMA 7 with Chris Tiu) or why he thinks he can sell with all those commercials (Imagine, he even endorses a vinegar brand?) but I never question his skill and determination when he is on the ring. The man is really unstoppable. End of the story!

Beauty Knows No Pain

"Beauty knows no pain!" This is what Lynn's mother told her as she defended her usual choice for pretty, pointy but feet killer stilletos in one of our casual lunches. Am cannot even convince her to shift sides even with her ominous quotable quote "walang magmamahal sa paa mo kundi ikaw lang".

The range of things women subject themselves into to beautify themselves is endless and legendary. I would argue that this is actually bordering on being masochistic from consistent culturing (Gerbner's Theory) through our long history of social preconditioning, e.g., corsets, stilletos, facial scrubs and lately, hair rebonding.

For years, I convinced myself that I am a no-fuss girl and I would think twice bursting my budget on those expensive hair treatments. If you shop around, the price of one rebond session (a good one) is a more than the price of a small 14" television set, imagine? But for years also, I have to contend with my unruly curls that sometimes nauunang pumasok sa pinto kesa sa akin. There was an adage that you have to brush 100 times every night so it will grow long, straight and silky. I tried that since I was eight but by 25 strokes, I decided to go to sleep or watch TV. So, I grew up with curls (although I disillusioned myself that it is just a worst case of wavy hair ---tipong masyadong mahangin lang sa labas...). I get late in the morning trying to tame them and if I gave up in frustration, I wear them up in a pony, which made me really aloof looking (if not older than I am). I also used to wear them short but the frequent trips to the saloon to have it trimmed when the curls start showing was also a drain on the budget so I let it grew to a liveable shoulder length.

Last Sunday, I decided to try this new science of hair rebonding. I went to the saloon as soon as the mall opens at 10 o'clock in the morning. Thea, the hair 'estimator', asked me to remove my pony and ran her hands through my curls weighing the strands in her palm and scribbled in her form. I couldn't decipher much but the price and the "semi-kinky" description led me to an astonished, "What?". She tried to reassure me with, "Conservative estimate lang po ito, Ma'am. For the chemical treatments..." But ask any girl with wild curls, 'semi-kinky' description is far from reassuring. The five-digit estimate also made me slightly dizzy and reminded me that I only ate two slices of bread that morning so I could be in the saloon when the mall opens. I should have relented to my mother's fragrant garlic rice and crispy, fried danggit with tomato salad. Kainis!

To cut the story short, I took the proverbial leap of faith. I signed the agreement form on the price and treatment with squinting eyes (bigat din sa loob e but beauty knows no pain :p ) as I allowed Thea to whisk me inside for shampooing. After they blow dried my hair, Char and Michelle (Imagine, we're already first name basis --- you get that for staying in the saloon for almost 10 hours) started applying the chemicals. They left for about an hour with my hair tightly sealed in a Glad wrap. After the second hair washing, they blow tried my hair again prior to the straightening process (Read: painful pagpapalantsa ng buhok strand by strand). With my curls and the volume of my hair, it took them a little more than four hours. I tried to chat up Michelle whose thumbs have been scalded by hot flat iron so she goes easy on my scalp. But still, I had a migrane from too much scalp tension afterwards. Yes, beauty knows no pain (whoever thought that adage must be really something!). But when they finished, my hair was so flat and glossy that you can see your reflection on it. Feeling dyosa ka talaga!

For those contemplating of doing it, some guideposts:

"Was it painful?" - Yep (try having three people pull your hair at the same time...)

"Was it costly?" - Naman?!? (you can buy a good cellphone from the price)

"Was it taxing on your health?" - Yes! (you'll eat fastfood junk the whole day since you can't leave the saloon unless you want to roam around the mall with thongs on your hair)

"Was it worth it?" - Yeah... Just look at the line of curly haired girls lining up to have their hair done. Think of all the pesos you can save from tons of conditioners, setting lotions and hair ponies just to tame your wild curls.

We only live once so try living a little bit dangerously and pretty!

Cat's Guide to Driving in Metro Manila

Hi. My name is Sugar. Driving in Metro Manila became more dangerous lately (I like to watch a lot of news on TV, you know?). And, I always wonder how Merzy fares in those perilous streets everytime she drives out in the morning. Her mother's trashbin even flies sideways when she takes out the car from the garage sometimes. I sit nervously on the window sill at night, waiting for her and praying that she comes home safe, especially during rainy days.

She forgot too many times to check her water reservoir and tires. She drives her car even in flooded areas. She honks even at pedestrians. Crazy, if want my opinion. But I love her to bits. She buys my favorite Mackerel flavored Friskies regularly and cried when I'm sick. She tries to get my litters, Bruno, Matilda and Sunshine, even though they're still too fragile to hold and I am scared to death she might drop them.

Here's my view on how to be safe on the streets:

Dealing with Stray Animals on the Road

1. PEATC and LTFRB need to look closely at major highways (i.e., Aguinaldo Highway) for the burgeoning number of squatters along the area and their wayward animals. They pose dangers to motorists.

2. Note to other pet owners: If you can't be responsible for your pet (e.g., let them roam even in highways), don't take one home. Road kill is on an uptrend even for my own kind.

3. Honk at the animals for at least 20 meters away to alert them. Our natural instinct is self-preservation but it would be impossible for us to run if your bumper is hairlength away from our fur!

Big Car Bullying

1. Public utility vehicles especially jeepneys, buses and trucks can be really nasty on the road. These drivers need to take some orientation seminar on road ethics!

2. Traffic authorities need to remind them to stay on the right lane. Maybe an implementing circular or ordinance to make the enforcement more forceful.

3. Take the offense: Keep distance and honk if they tailgate too close for comfort or try to swerve na alanganin.

4. For those monster, gas guzzlers SUVs that overtake you and snatch your rightful lane just because they're big, make their renewal of registration license a little bit harder next year by texting their irritating driving habits to LTRFB at 0921-4487777. In situations like these, do not get angry (because you will be late or get killed in case the big car driver is a psycho. Who in his right mind would counterflow and bully you out of your lane if they're not otherwise mentally deranged?) ---better to get even.

Corrupt Traffic Enforcers

1. According to Chairman Bayani Fernando, traffic officers or policemen should not take your driver's license. If you have an infraction, just take the ticket and pay them at any Metrobank branch. Let's make the traffic enforcement clean!

2. Kotong enforcers seem to be nowhere in sight during lunchbreaks, high noon at rainy days. Be extra careful during merienda times, breakfast and early evenings --- these leeches are on the prawl.

3. As a motorist, spend extra time familiarizing yourself with road signs, road courtesy and traffic rules. It's your first defense against corruption.

4. Never attempt to beat the red light in dimly lit intersections. Most traffic enforcers are just nearby hiding out in the dark or trees.

Rainy Days

1. Check your brakes and bring flashlight in car to check how deep are those flood waters before letting your car wade through it.

2. Stay in the middle. It's the best policy.

3. Apply a rain guard repellant on your windshield and side mirrors. Better to be safe than sorry.

4. Open your headlights and stop if it becomes zero visibility. Drive within the 20-40 kph range if road condition worsens.

5. Memorize the potholes, manholes and humps in your daily route including possible safe car parks where you can leave your car in case the rainwater becames too high.

The sad thing about humans is that they don't have nine lives. It really puzzles me why they can be so reckless on the road.

We all met at the PICC during the Asia Pacific Group Conference on Anti-Money Laundering in 2006. A significant milestone with the Philippines' removal from the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) blacklist. The event was keynoted by no less than PGMA. We served as liaison officers for the Anti-Money Laundering Council of the Philippines.

While the event was generally successful, it had its share of logistical nightmare: lost flights, missing delegates and annoying executives. From these constraints, our plain his and hellos turned into whining banters, to extended chats and finally into meaningful conversations.

One of the highs of being a part of the APG core group is having Iya and Pearl around. They're the best event organizers and can really through a fit to get everybody out of their busy schedules to attend our regular getos. It's nice because it's a chance to catch up and makipagkulitan with friends who became almost like a family to you.

Videoke session, Macapagal Boulevard

Videoke session is one of the group's favorite past time. Best singers: Olga, Jacke and Eli. The rest of us were just hang out for moral support (in case di nila maabot yung ibang notes :P).

Since we have a grand database of each other's details (e.g., birthday's and what-have-you) courtesy of Iya, we make it a point to be with each other's best moments or even kahit wala lang --- bored, stressed or naaliw lang. Last June 14th, we treated Thad for a lunchout at EDR before he leaves for a two-year study leave in Tokyo, Japan. (Real story: we felt guilty because we missed the dinner he threw for the group a night before at San Miguel by the Bay).

Iya and myself have gotten close through the years because of our mutual love of writing and of late, blogging. Btw, she just launched her new book --- Bound to Last (available in Powerbooks).

New vegetarian Ms. Ding. Not sure whether she's happy with the meal.

Ms. Ding, one of our elder group members, recently turned vegetarian due to health reasons. But knowing from an aunt who is a staunch vegan (one who doesn't eat anything that came from animals and animal by product or simply anything with a face), vegetarianism is a tall order and I admire those who has the discipline to live the lifestyle although is not always a fun experience. You'll have to pass up fun family reunions because you can't eat the lechon among others. Right now, I'm happy being a carnivore (although I am trying to minimize the slaughterhouse violence by eating less red meat these days).

Soup of the Day, EDR

The meal was not exceptional but the ambiance of the EDR is good for it to be considered an ideal watering hole of highly opinionated and talkative APG members.

Being Not a Dragon Warrior: Lessons from Dreamwork's Kung Fu Panda

Dreamwork's latest installment of animated cartoons hit the child-fun button right on target. I accompanied my nephew to his first movie experience (the poor boy has to be temporarily sent away before his elder sister's brand new notebooks and textbooks got a full dose of his artistic expressions ;P) and I had to sit in a jampacked row of shrieking kids and toddlers in all shapes, sizes and level of cuteness...name it, they're all there. If the bubbly laughter and jubilant glee in every Po's antics were any indication, Jack Black (voice behind Po) did a good job. Very well, indeed.

The story revolved around a clumsy and confused panda (he calls a duck his Dad, imagine?) named Po that was thrusted by a mix of funny circumstances to be hailed as the Dragon Warrior. A true-blue foodie, his master Shifu (voice of Dustin Hoffman) has to train him using the best tool available: food. Apart from the amazing fight scenes (Kung Fu fanatics: yehey!), the movie made every cartoon character cute--- enormous eyes, pudgy cheeks so kids were amused eventhough these characters kicked each other to death. No wonder there is so much violence in the world!

The scenes of the movie also reminded me of the Forbidden City in China and its majectic halls.

In one way or the other, we have been like Po forced by circumstances and life choices to become something that we are not or we thought that we are not (being a dragon warrior is just a syllogism). Amidst the rough edges and apparent ineptitudes, one can be the best the they could possibly be so long that you are prepared to toe the line (with or without siopao in a bowl). Moreso, there is no secret formula in the silk scroll. Ain't life great?

Row, Row, Row Our Boat

Some 2000 years ago, Chinese statesman, warrior and poet Qu Yuan threw himself in the Mi Lo River as a last heroic act of protest against the tyrant government. His people rushed to their boats and tried to save him by beating their drums and throwing rice dumplings into the river to distract the fishes that might devour him but Qu Yuan still drowned.

Fast forward to the new millenium, the Dragon Boat Festival (Tuen Ng) was held every fifth day of the lunar month (June in the Gregorian calendar) to commerate the frantic search for the body of Qu Yuan.

In the Philippines particularly here at the Manila Bay (at the back of the Manila Yacht Club), dragon boat racing is fast becoming a popular sport and drawing a number of teams and enthusiasts alike. Laila a member of One Piece Dragon Sangres, one of the teams that compete in the Annual Dragon Boat regatta, has been very insistent that I should try out paddling as a guest in their women's team. For a while, I have been putting it off for a lot of reasons: foul smell of the Manila Bay, tight schedule and most of all, the activity itself is bawas ganda points (you'll get emusculated through too much sun exposure and physical exertion since to be good at it you need to practice everyday. Plus, you also need to be a strong swimmer, not just good swimmer, if you will be competing in open sea regatta.)

Probably it's the time of the month, a desire to be close to the sea or need to trim down my current body fat content all conspiring together so Laila did not exert much effort in dragging me and another newbie, Chiqui, to Manila Bay yesterday. We arrived at the Philippine Navy pier around 5 p.m. and after a brief orientation, we were led to the boat and I had to hold my breath (yes, good cardio) till we went closer to the breakwater walls of the Manila Yacht Club due to my morbid fear of inhaling microbes and further aggrevate my colds (yup, I'm a little bit crazy for going. :P).

Admittedly, it was not all that easy as it looks on TV. The rowing part needs to be properly coordinated and timed so you move smoothly and flawlessly in the water. The oar is a little bit heavier and trickier to manipulate in the water since the paddle is flat compared to the customized and tapered kayak oars. The movements are precise and more technical. With a minimum of 12 rowers in a dragon boat, teamwork is the key. You need to be really attentive on the movement particularly the lifting arm of the rower in front of you so you don't make a mistake and destroy the momentum of the team.

The fun though starts when you finally get the rhythm. It is when paddling becomes a joy, the smell of the Manila Bay starts its immunizing effect on you and the lull of the waves underneath the boat drowns away your stress. It leads you into a trancelike state until you paddle load home, see the murky water close to the pier, board off the boat, feel your saltish-tanned arms and ease your aching limbs through hot shower that you start questioning why you went in the first place.

But like most things unknown, the joy of knowing them pulls you back for more...

One can always start the travel itinerary doing the usual stuff: unpack, soak in a warm bath for one hour to ease the jet lag, check out the shops, get dolled up, visit some famous landmarks and have quiet dinner with friends. For some free spirits like myself though, any trip is not complete without sneaking out to some rustic and uncharted destinations (usually unplanned and without the whinny or sheltered friends or family members).

Revisiting the Old Nayong Pilipino

Our original intent was to test drive the new Honda driving facility in Sucat, Parañaque but ended up in the old Nayong Pilipino Complex that Sunday. Sa dami ng re-routing in Parañaque, we obviously took the wrong turn and ended up facing the facade of the old Nayong Pilipino that brought back old, childhood memories for my brothers and myself.

We have a relative that used to live close to the area and most of our weekends were spent biking, strolling and running in the 45-hectare leisure park. I learned how to ride a bike in Nayong Pilipino. My brother learned the history of the Cagsawa Church from my grandparents in Nayong Pilipino. Apart from the obvious trip to memory lane, the park was wide enough for practice driving so, we decided to proceed since it was no longer operating commercially in view of the opening of the new Nayong Pilipino theme park in Clark, Pampanga.

Nakakalungkot lang. It was not the same Nayong Pilipino we knew so much in our childhood days. The nipa huts in the Ifugao Province were gone. The area where they place the beautiful kulintangs inside the Maranao Village was empty with termites and moths slowly eating away the beams. The manicured vermuda grasses that used to align the walkways were replaced by wayward cogon grasses, indicating the obvious neglect of the place throughout the years.

When the guard told us that practice driving (much to the disappointment of my younger brother) is not allowed, we decided to do our usual pasttime instead: biking. I took my niece to a ride and toured her on the biking grounds. Although the overall ambience was changed with the presence of some homeless and street children that now enjoy the fringes of the theme park (open to the public), the ruins still provide an idyllic calm in the midst of the hustle and bustle of a crowded metropolis.

While my niece could not appreciate the replica of the majestic Mayon Volcano with candy wrappers littered along the wild cogon grasses at the foot of the 'volcano' in the old Nayong Pilipino, I had to remind her that this was not the real thing and that the Mayon Volcano in Albay has inspired many poets and epic stories, which some of them already made into children's books that I read to her in National Bookstores and Powerbooks. She nodded absently and hopped her way out of the bike to catch a butterfly. And, I was left thinking whether I should be glad I have seen better days of the old Nayong Pilipino.
