Good day everybody!

The blog The Dedicated house is having a link party called "Anything Blue Friday" and I thought I'd share what I found today. I went shopping with my good friend at a boutique called Ozma Atelier. She has nice collections of vintage accessories and great fashionable clothing. She had a one day sale today and I found this purrty crochet dress.

The color caught my attention. I loved blue, but I was hesitant about the crochet part. My exact words were like " I look like a table", because this is the exact pattern my mom did for our table cover, and I just couldn't get that out of my head, until the ladies in the dressing room thought it was cute and are willing to trade it with theirs. They suggested it would go so well as country style fashion. It opened my eyes to a potential possibility! And plus, it only cost $2!!! Love it!

S'mores Cake

I have seen so many recipes of smore's cake and they all look and surely taste amazing. I do not bake a lot so I thought I'd make a practice round of smores cake. I picked a simple recipe from food network magazine which also found in this link.

I couldn't make it exactly look like the the magazine...

...and I forgot to get a jar of marshmallow cream in my grocery list, so I had to make it homemade using this recipe. I love the recipe! I just could eat it by itself, like a little taste of heaven!

Iceberg Wedges with Guacamole dressing

I wanna share to you today a little bit something about what I learned from an old cook book I recently purchased from thrift store. This recipe is from Food and Wine annual Cookbook 2009.

I've never served iceberg lettuce wedge on a plate before. I thought it looks laziness at first, but my husband actually liked it more compare to common salad mix.

Here is the recipe:

In a blender, puree 1 cup of guacamole with 1/3 cup fresh lime juice and 1/4 cup of water. With the machine on, gradually add 1/2 cup vegetable oil. Season with salt and pepper. Quarter 1 head iceberg lettuce and spoon the dressing on top. Garnish with crumbled bacon, sliced radishes, shredded pepper jack cheese and diced tomatoes. Place the tomatoes to support the lettuce.

Comforter sets on sale: Comparing Prices

IF there is one lesson from my mom I am grateful about is the way she shop. Not that she shops a lot but she is a very smart shopper. I guess the reason why she is very skilled in trade was because she did it for a living.
My mom takes up all day shopping, this because she would search the entire town for cheaper prices. And oh yeah, she is an awesome haggler, something I can NEVER do with confidence!
I have been looking for a new comforter set now. One thing I love about online shopping is that I could compare prices without even leaving the house.
I am tired of using my hubby's old bachelor's 4 pc dark brown comforter that has a suede-ish texture. I wanted something light color having this hot Tucson weather. Kohls is having a big home sale where comforters could go down 55 to 60 percent off. Of course, before jumping into compulsive buying, I searched and searched for the cheapest price of comforter set I like I could find. I found some interesting similarities.

We did not pay for the sale price though. One thing I like about Kohls is their 30% off coupons and in addition, we got $10 off from having kohls rewards. So in total, we paid $62.99 plus free shipping. I love it because it is reversible, like getting two sets of comforter set for a price of one. I like the pattern. It isn't too girly and hubby liked it.
I couldn't find anything like it anywhere but Kohls (or I didn't look hard enough?). According to what I read, Croft&Barrow is an exclusive Kohls brand.

Black Bean (Meatless) Burger

I currently installed Better Homes app in my android tab. I LOVE IT! I have to say, it is a great app with great recipes!.

I take my tablet with me and it becomes my trusty grocery check list. Yes. I am that lazy to write my grocery list on paper. It has a feature where it organizes and categorize all your lists from produce, meat, dairy and etc.

We had this recipe for tonight's dinner. I am so blessed to have a husband who is not afraid to eat anything I try to make for the first time. I was a little worried hubby wouldn't like it, but after eating three, he said it was delicious, or in his own word "This is seriously seriously delicious!!". Made me happy.
He described it as a bean salsa dip in a form of burger.

I was very excited to try the recipe that I made some mistakes, mistakes that could be fixed. I did not rinse and drain the black beans as the recipe told so I added a couple tablespoons odd flour and added another half a cup of crushed corn tortilla chips to thicken the mixture.

I suggest to chill the mixture overnight and grill it. If I only have a grill :(

What Chit Chat with God Can Do

Saturday, still saddened for the loss of a friend who passed away last Sunday. Her death was sudden yet very peaceful. I cried everytime it crossed my mind that I would never see her again.
I was scheduled to teach at Sunday school for the next day (today). I felt like I didn't want to or I do not have energy, mentally, emotionally and physically due to my heavy work at my job. Although I read through the lesson plan in the book, I felt I am not ready to pull the lesson through. I told my husband "I don't feel like teaching tomorrow", laid down and passed out.
Today, while driving to church, I muttered to my husband, my heart doesn't feel right and expected my class today would be terrible because I was unprepared, but somehow I felt like God understood what's in my heart. He knew I needed energy to do the ministry.
At the start of the class, still unprepared, I did what I would call, chit-pray with the kids, prayed with sincere heart to help us (including me) to understand the lesson and just give us great time. To my surprise I was full of energy today, we did had a great time in the class.
I used to think my ministry in the church is my business alone, but I realized it was God's ministry and he does all the work through me. He will supply whatever his worker needs.
I didn't know where I pulled that strength to do my task, but I believe that small prayer helped me today. It doesn't matter in whichever form the prayer is, as long it is personal and sincerely coming from the heart.

I Love My Job

I can't even summon my thoughts to write a blog, nor any recent craft projects to share. I have been working on some things around the house, but I feel I am not creative enough to creatively express it in words... or maybe I am just too lazy to speak (I mean write).

My job has taken most of my time and energy since there was no other available to alternate the schedule with.

My restaurant work is not a glamorous job. I would come home covered in vegetable juices or blood from the prepping prime rib. One thing I learned, though one can love cooking or working in the kitchen, but it doesn't mean working in a restaurant will be a bliss. Cooking can be an enjoyable hobby, where you can take all the time you want in making one dish, on the other hand, restaurant work is a business where you have cook/prep as much as you could as quick as you could.You are paid in hours. I would come home drained and sore all over, but then, I had to do continue doing it as I work in my own kitchen to cook dinner with my work shoes on. Main reason why I don't blog much anymore, because I feel like I rather use my remaining energy to watch "Who's Line is it Anyway" and relax

Yes. It is not a glamorous job. I don't wear high heels nor wear a lipstick, or have time to curl my hair, but I like it. It is the closest I could get to what I did or should I say back I was in college. Although working in the kitchen has nothing to do with film making, it is a fast paced environment, I wear sneakers at work, a lot of running, lots of lifting and the job requires a little bit of creativity and developing of skills. Oh yeah! Not to mention I didn't have to deal with demanding customers. I am happy working at the back of the house.

It is a tough job. Sometimes I wanted to cry when my back really hurt (except when I'm cutting onions), but then I remember how I love my job and I do my best to be great in it. It is my delight to bring good quality clean food like I would give to my own family even if it takes me to wash my hand every 20 minutes for 20 secs under the hottest running water I could handle.

This is not my dream job. I know I mentioned I wanted to write fantasy/fiction novels and I still do, but I cannot finish a novel in one sitting. I have got to have a day job that can pay our bills, food and buy my way back to see my family in Manila. I feel it is not the right time yet. God is still preparing me for the best, but for now, I want to do great and work my way up for a more challenging position.

At the end of the day when I have all sorts cuts on my hand and different sorts of body ache I could imagine, I still am thankful to God for that I have a job. A job I like, then I would remember everything I have gone through from leaving my life behind to start all over again. I remembered wondering how long till I get acclimated to life here in U.S. My husband thought me so well to learn how to be more independent. Tough lessons, tough teaching but lots of love into it. It was all worth it and totally necessary. He must love me so. But I know all of this is because God left me with a promise that he would take care of everything for me.

My Ombre Saga

Every once in a while we get tired of our hair. One day, I decided I want a little change. I was tired of old boring black hair. It has been more than 13 years since I had my last hair colored. I went to the internet for some information. I came across this. They call it "ombre"

I looked for the definition of ombre, making sure I knew what it meant. The online dictionary says,

ombre is a French word referring in having colors or two tones that shade into each other. I was excited with the idea. I called the salon and inquired for price. The conversation ended with I had to go to the salon to check out the length of my hair.

I walked in to the salon and chatted with a stylist, showed her this picture. It seemed like she knew what she was saying so, compulsively, I said, "Let's do it!"

I was a little bit apprehensive that something was wrong. After she was done with my hair, It looked like this...

She could tell I wasn't happy with the result, which I was. It did not look anything like in the picture. I am not a professional stylist but I could tell, there was no need to foil my hair. Now my dark black hair has streaks of blondish which made me look dirty. I was not aiming for Christina Aguilera 'dirrrty' look. I told my stylist it did not look close in the picture. It is not ombre! But she insisted it was. I was starting to get frustrated, but as a nice lady I was, I said it looks nice and I wanted to get out of there as quick as I could before I cry.

I posted my laments on my facebook. A friend who happened to be a friend who works in the same salon recognized me and overheard my conversation with my stylist. She saw the look on my face that I wasn't happy about it. Thank goodness she had me schedule an appointment to fix my hair for free!

I was soo happy after she was done with my hair. This is what I wanted in the first place!

And I was right. There was no need for foiling my hair and it supposed to cost less!

I would never want to trust my hair to a stranger again! I learned to stick to a recommended stylist! Her name is Kristen of Style America located along W Ina Rd Tucson AZ. She is awesome!

I guess I am not in that place yet where I could work full time and blog in a regular basis, although I will keep on trying. It has been a busy week at work. I am covering for a co-worker's schedule because she just got an arm surgery.

Okay, we were not goofing around during work. This was taken after my successful training at work.

Working in the restaurant is tough. It requires a lot of physical work, that is why I like to take as much rest I could to recover for the next day of work. Sadly, I had not time for crafts, but it is something I like doing, so I will try to work it out.

Unnamed Dish

I am not really good at giving titles and names (good luck to my future kids). If you would say I should just name the ingredients and how I made it, the name of this dish will only end up a long descriptive procedure with bad grammar.

I came up with this dish when I was getting rid of what was left of the veggies in the fridge to room for new groceries for the week. The vegetables are a day or two away from being thrown in the trash. I didn't want to do it so I tried to be a little bit creative and see what I could do with it.

As someone who cooks like a man like me, of course, I didn't measure everything so I can't share the recipe, but what I could share is what I did.

So, I sliced the baguettes (preferably in thin slices). I cut the cherry tomatoes in halves and cooked it in Sherry in a saucepan. I added diced red onions, and a splash of V8 tomato juice and a dash of sugar. In a pan, I melted the butter and sauteed the asparagus and garlic. I liked my garlic to be a little brown-ish.

I brushed the sliced baguette with olive oil and sprinkled some garlic powder. Top with the cooked cherry tomatoes mixture. Next, the as garlic asparagus and top with blue cheese! Et Voila!

Four Step Lemon-Onion Chicken

I just tried this recipe for dinner. It was really good that I have to blog about it.

This is Melissa D'Arabian's recipe from Food Network magazine. It was the first dish she ever cooked for her husband.

The recipe calls for white wine, but I substituted Sherry cooking wine.

The flavors are well balanced and my favorite part of the dish was the citrus glazed onions! I would definitely recommend this. A must try one!

Fantasy Mirror and Giveaway

I call it "Fantasy mirror". When I saw this mirror, I couldn't help myself but become that little girl who imagined a princess with a magic mirror with magical gem stones.

Okay, so, I didn't get it from a fairy godmother and this doesn't have magic. I saw this when a friend took me to a Gem show here in Tucson. How convenient I happen to live near the site where Tucson Gem show was held.

The Tucson Gem and Mineral show is an annual trade shows which takes place late January and February. People from all different places especially jewelers and those who are in jewelry business would come here and meet wholesale dealers. Most of the trade shows are not open for the public. Certain shows require registration, fee and business license.

It was a great experience. Although, I came in the last day and I didn't have much time to take pictures of the event itself! My time wasn't enough to check out all the booths!

I got these dreamy antique looking mirror and comb with rhinestones. I had a hard time choosing one, so I got all three instead.

And this elegant pink necklace too which are now all available in my Etsy store.

Although, I did not got this one at the gem show, I was walking at the mall and saw a new accessories boutique. I went in and got myself a pair of earrings. As I was about to check out, this caught my eye and thought about you!

I Owe You World an Explanation

Hello World!

I'll start this post with my title. I owe you an explanation. Sorry there hasn't been much celebration here lately. I was caught up with such rapid changes for the past months. There are so many things I wanted to share. I didn't know where and how to start. It was overwhelming.

As maybe some of you may knew that accepted a career path in sales for a short period of time. It was a very different experience since I have never been in retail job. I gave my best to give my customers the attention they deserved (even the rude ones). I loved the idea I was a part of the decision making and getting what they wanted. I also tried to always keep my goals and respected my co-workers though sometimes it could get rough.

I loved my supervisors and managers. They stood by me in every step of the way and made sure that my traning needs were met. As a result, I was asked if I could stay as regular employee. I was elated given the opportunity to say, but sadly, I couldn't continue due to issue of distance.

God is good. I got another job even before my seasonal job ended. It was 3 miles away from home. I thought it was perfect, aside from the fact I loved working in the kitchen. I applied and was hired at the same day.

My days has become busier with all the training. Food service work is tough. It requires physical work of lifting, standing and chopping my entire shift. We had to wash our hands every 30 minutes (or before and after prepping another item), under warmest water we cold handle just to bring you clean food

At the moment when my arms and legs were tired and weary, fingers were prune-y and I couldn't wait to go home and just lay down, but somehow for some reason, I couldn't wait to do better next day, not till I just get my rest. It is not a glamorous work. I would come home with chocolate smudge or tomato stain on my coat, but I don't mind.
Though contented with a new job, I still haven't figured how to balance my time yet. I miss blogging. I miss crafting. I missed refurbishing. I miss thrifting. I miss reading blogs. I miss you and your outstanding creativeness!
After all these changes, you are always on my mind. I am very excited to share a little something something for you :)

Edible Gift: Vanilla Mango Apricot

And so my season at work is coming to near end, I made a little parting gift to the awesome managers and supervisors who made sure they got my back and encouraged me in every step of the way that I did my job well. I was blessed with such very nice supervisors.

I got this recipe from Dec. 2011 issue of Food Network Magazine. It's called Vanilla Apricot (scroll down for recipe)

Just when I thought I got all the ingredients in hand...guess what? I didn't have lemon zest! But hey.. I got a mango and lemon juice.

I did the recipe as said, but I added mango and a teeny tiny bit of shredded ginger and lemon juice.

Great topping for vanilla ice cream, or mix a little with balsamic vinegar for salad dressing or just plan spread for bread or cracker!

After cooling down, I divided them into small jars and packaged it! I got this awesome free printable tags in this link.

Vanilla Apricots

Bring 3 cups of sugar, 1/2 cups of water, 3 strips of lemon zest and I split of vanilla bean to a simmer, stirring. Add 3 cups of dried apricots; cook 10 minutes. Let cool, then divide among jars.

Spam Saves Maki Mayham

I had such strong craving for Maki for dinner. I knew I had imitation crabmeat left. So I bought all I need to make a simple maki. Dried seaweed, mayo, cream cheese, avocado, short rice and cucumber.

When I took the crab meat out of the fridge, it was covered with eewness goo. It was spoiled! So I threw it right away and sanitized. Disappointed, I went to the pantry for substitute. There, I saw a can of spam.

Light bulb!

Spam could be handy. I sliced the spam in sticks, threw it in a bowl and drizzled it with sesame oil, rolled it with veggies, mayo and cream cheese in rice and dried seaweed. Et Voila! Instant substitute for crabmeat!

New Year, New Table

I was a little bit naughty last year.

This is my husband's old coffee table when he was still a bachelor. I stripped it, sanded and painted it and gave it a new look.

I just couldn't stand seeing those scratches and cherry red finish is not really my cup of color.

I settled for a simpler and more neutral color for the body and a shiny wood finish for the table surface.

Exploring New Tradition: Muffin Pants

Hello World!

It's been a while since I've been in blogland. Truly, my seasonal job took too much of my time. I extremely missed being involved in blogging world. It has been insanely busy at work with all the holiday shopping along with gift returns and exchanges at work, but at least I had that one day off to spend Christmas day with the family.

Another home, another tradition. We immensely enjoyed exploring a new tradition. We spent our Christmas with a family who are very musical oriented and a great servants in the ministy. We lit advent candles, had scripture reading and sang hymns.

Hubby and I couldn't help but share our hidden talent.

...did I say, talent in lip sync.

It was a sweet sweet Christmas tradition at the De Garmo's. To start off , each one in the family made two kinds of cookies on Christmas eve. We had our share of Cranberry and Walnut Oatmeal cookies.

The sweet treat continued as we welcome Christmas morning with four kinds of freshly baked muffins.

We all enjoyed opening our presents. It trully pays to know what your love one wants for Christmas.

To see how excited they are to get that simple wish is priceless.

A small silly unexpected gifts becomes special because it brings a smile on their faces.

I thought this year, I'd give the girls something I personally handicrafted.

Yes.. and Yoda was there too.

He loved all the attention!

We were so happy our grandma Emmy was with us this year. She flew all the way from MO to AZ!

I thought Christmas this year would be incomparable to what I am used to. But every home and every family has their own special way in making this special occasion memorable. I was glad they welcomed me to be a part of it.

Christmas Shell and Passion Parade Friday

Have you ever had that "I just had to get it moment"? I am sure you did! That's what I felt with this tree ornament.

I was browsing around the holiday lane section of the store where I work, when these ornaments caught my eye. The feeling became mutual when I saw the label that says "Made in the Philippines"

Without further thinking, I grabbed all three of different style. It was in 70% off and with my back office discount, I got it for a price I couldn't refuse!

These ornaments are made of Capiz shell or oyster shell. These are the shells were thinned with chemicals until became translucent. They are used as alternative to stained glass commonly found in the Philippines. They are also commonly used for making lamp shades, fashion accessories, window panes, Christmas lantern and many more. Capiz shell is known for it's elegant and formal look comparable to mother of pearl.

Passion Parade and DIY tree skirt

Are you done with your Christmas decorations?

There's a lot of pending unfinished Christmas projects lying around here. I totally lost time i needed to finish them all. I really do miss what I do before I got a job at retail, where my world revolves in providing great customer service and window shopping. I miss blogging. I miss taking care of our home. I miss a good home made meal from scratch. I miss...me.

Although, i am earning a bit, I still couldn't rid in me the excitement in diy mentality. Yes, i could afford now to get me a nice tree skirt, but the thrifty side of me wants something else!

Last year was when we bought our very first Christmas tree, and the only tree skirt my husband and I could compromise was...well... this.

Then I found a round Christmas table cloth and one plain red bed sheet. All together cost me less than $5. At least I wont feel guilty cutting them as ruffles.

I used my ruffler and sewed my ruffled fabrics in an alternate fashion and used the felt tree skirt as my base.

I love how it turned out! I love the festive colors.

And Yoda? I think he is happy he could rest under the tree.

Today is Scott and Kelly's (not of Klove radio) last day of engagement as they would publicly announce tomorrow a promise to be bound to be best friends forever. They are just the most darling and beautiful couple ever! Kinda like a princess and a prince charming.

Our friend was very nice to open her gorgeous home for Kelly's bridal shower. The ladies brought in great foods! I especially love that cheesecake you see at the picture which our pastor's wife made. Oh it was to die for!

And this little darling Chloe with be one of their flower girls. I heard she has been practicing her walk.

Of course! I gotta have a picture with the bride-to-be. Don't be fooled. She bent down a little so I didn't have to look too short lol! I was given a privilege to take part in this wonderful event as someone in charge of the guest book!

Passion Parade Link Soiree and No Decal DIY Glass design

Hello world!
So Thanksgiving is over. What's next? Is it in your family tradition to go on black Friday frenzy? Did you get some great deals?
Those great deals were so tempting, but i just couldnt afford to spend more than I make. Though I decided not to be a part of midnight chaos, I will still have to witness the aftermath tomorrow at work.

But before I set off at work, i want to leave you with a little project i made.

I was looking at my inexpensive diy tablepiece and i couldnt help but think, it needed something more!

So with an acrylic paint on my hand and a stamp on the other, i had an idea!

I used a faded text background rubber stamp with black acrylic as ink and let it dry. Expect this is temporary, at least i could erase or change the design anytime.
