News published by silvia
Premiere Brazil! 2009, the seventh annual collaboration between MoMA and the Rio de Janeiro International Film Festival, introduces New York audiences to original and compelling films by both new and established Brazilian filmmakers. The exhibition’s opening-night screening is the U.S. premiere of acclaimed director Bruno Barreto’s Last Stop 174, a tender and suspenseful story of human tragedy and loss set in Rio de Janeiro. Also featured are eight seminal works by Eduardo Coutinho, Brazil’s master of documentary filmmaking. Highly regarded for their formally distinguished and innovative style, Coutinho’s influential films highlight the amazing storytelling abilities of ordinary people. The Coutinho retrospective includes the world premiere of his latest film, Moscow. The festival’s annual selection of classic films celebrates the centenary of one of Brazil’s most popular composers, Villa Lobos, with a screening of the rare 1937 Humberto Mauro film The Discovery of Brazil, which features a beautiful Lobos score. Several music-filled documentaries featuring Brazil’s most beloved contemporary poets and performers form a significant component of this year’s festival, which also includes live performances of Brazilian music in the Museum’s Sculpture Garden, presented as part of MoMA Thursday Nights. All films are from Brazil and in Portuguese with English subtitles. Most first screenings will be introduced by the filmmaker(s).

News published by silvia
Cleve Gray: Man and Nature, a 30-year retrospective of noted American painter Cleve Gray, will be on view at the Columbia Museum of Art from June 26 through September 27, 2009. The exhibition illustrates the full progression of Gray’s practice as he developed his signature gestural style between 1970 and 2004, the year he died. Man and Nature is the first comprehensive touring exhibition of Gray’s work and is the only museum exhibition to date to focus on his mature abstraction. The 47 paintings in the show follow the development of the artist’s color-based abstractions, forged out of introspection, his responses to his extensive travels, and his deep understanding of European and American modernism and Asian sources.

Cleve Gray (1918-2004) was an independent-minded artist whose work paralleled and reflected Abstract Expressionism and Color Field painting but did not entirely embrace them. He had a lifelong interest in Asian art, and his interest began avidly when he was at Princeton University where he graduated summa cum laude. Gray developed considerable expertise in Chinese and Japanese art, and he wrote his Princeton thesis on Chinese landscape painting. During the last 30 years of his life, travel to the Middle East and trips to Southeast Asia continued to influence his series of paintings. The reconciliation of opposites also intrigued him, and during the 1980s and ‘90s, he went through phases of simplification and reduction, saying, “I’ve always been attracted to the Chinese sense of yin yang – opposites converging to make a harmony. Male, female, black, white: all coming together.”

Karen Brosius, executive director of the Columbia Museum of Art says, “We are honored to present Gray’s retrospective, and by doing so, we continue to strengthen our commitment to showing, collecting and educating the community about Modern and Contemporary art.

News published by silvia
For the Summer Season 2009, Tate St Ives presents seven one-room displays of fine and applied art produced during the last eighty years. Four of the seven artists are working now; three were working in the previous century.

By bringing together historic and contemporary figures, the exhibition shows how avant-garde art made in earlier decades of the twentieth century continues to influence artists working today. Ideas and forms which were once considered radical return and reappear, before eventually becoming integrated into mainstream culture.

The three earlier figures – Barbara Hepworth, Lucie Rie and Alfred Wallis – were each associated with the St Ives colony during the twentieth century. The contemporary work is by four important emerging and established artists whose works engage with the legacies of Modernism and who are, to a greater or lesser extent, critically rethinking both the style and ideology of Modernism. Together the seven rooms suggest shared themes and open up dialogues, between artists and across generations.

The exhibition includes painting, film, text and sculpture but all of the works have a strong material presence. The time-worn surfaces of Katy Moran's paintings are juxtaposed with the hand-crafted physicality of Barbara Hepworth's carvings and casts. Alfred Wallis' rough, scavenged boards are set alongside the evocative text works of Lawrence Weiner. Bojan Šarčević’s films address sculpture through the intangible media of time and light, whilst Carol Bove's assemblages rely on the social, cultural and communal histories embedded in found objects and images. Lucie Rie is equally concerned with form and function; the honest usefulness of her handthrown pots is set against the aesthetic beauty of their extraordinary surfaces.

The conversations across the seven rooms take us both forwards and backwards through time. The displays are neither surveys nor retrospectives, and the rooms are not arranged chronologically. Instead they emphasise that contemporary art inevitably contains references to the past, while historic art continues to engage with a constantly changing world. In this way the work of younger artists is shown in a rich historic context, whilst the work of older artists is reinvigorated for new generations.

The exhibitions department presents "Flow," an exhibition of two unique series by graduate painting student Yi-Hsin Tzeng. In the first, three-dimensional box paintings provide the ground on which to juxtapose figure drawings with fluid-like "flows" of color, suggesting various and ambiguous modes of desire. In the second series, created during Tzeng's Fall 2008 New York City Workspace Opportunity, paint and foam flow amidst gritty remnants of the urban environment. A reception will take place July 23, 6-8 p.m. The exhibition and reception are free and open to the public. For more information, visit

News published by silvia
The Serpentine Gallery presents an exhibition of the work of the celebrated American artist Jeff Koons, his first major exhibition in a public gallery in England.

Working in thematic series since the early 1980s, Koons has explored notions of consumerism, taste, banality, childhood and sexuality. He is known for his meticulously fabricated works that draw on a variety of objects and images from American and consumer culture.

For his exhibition at the Gallery, Koons presents paintings and sculptures from his Popeye series, which he began in 2002.

The works incorporate some of Koons’s signature ideas and motifs, including surreal combinations of everyday objects, cartoon imagery, art-historical references and children’s toys.

The sculptures on show continue Koons’s interest in casting inflatable toys. Those typically used by children in a swimming pool are cast in aluminium, their surfaces painted to bear an uncanny resemblance to the original objects. He juxtaposes these replica readymades with unaltered everyday objects, such as chairs or rubbish bins. The paintings are complex and layered compositions that combine disparate images both found and created by Koons, including images of the sculptures in the series.

Featuring loans from both public and private collections, the exhibition also includes works that have never been shown publicly before. The immediately recognisable figures of Popeye and Olive Oyl are central in the series and appear in several prominent works within the exhibition. One of the most iconic American comicstrip characters, Popeye was conceived 80 years ago this year in 1929 when the Great Depression was taking hold. In Popeye’s early years, the cartoon addressed the hardships and injustices of the time and, in this current period of economic recession, he is a fitting character to rediscover and explore.

Koons has used inflatables in his work since the late 1970s; one of his most iconic sculptures, Rabbit, 1986, is an inflatable bunny rendered in reflective stainless steel. He has also made sculptures on a spectacular scale inspired by inflatables, including works from his monumental Celebration series.

Jeff Koons was born in York, Pennsylvania, in 1955. His work has been widely exhibited internationally and his most recent solo exhibitions include presentations at the Château de Versailles, France; Neue Nationalgalerie, Berlin; Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; and Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, all in 2008. Koons lives and works in New York.

News published by silvia
The second installment of this summer series of five multidisciplinary performances aims to answer the questions: What remains after a performance occurs? What happens when a person misses a performance? Can the experience of that performance be recreated and seen in a gallery even if it occurred elsewhere?

Here/Not There stretches something ephemeral -- performance -- into something more lasting. It explores how something can be experienced in one place and yet offer a sense of the experience in another.

Each week in July, a different Chicago artist presents ways to merge the performative and the visual. The initial performances begin on Tuesday evenings at 7 pm after which the remnants, traces, or experiences generated by the artist remain in the gallery through the following Sunday. While the installation is centered in the McCormick Tribune Orientation space, the performance(s) may be located in various spaces throughout the MCA and even the surrounding streets. Some of these performances will occur throughout the week. Using multiple media, each of the five artists demonstrates how performance and visual art can not only coexist but also expand the notions of these often separate fields.

We'll discover what captured their imaginations and the fair this year; the difference between a curator's and a critic's way of looking at art; and more. A question and answer session follows. Founded in 1893, the art fair celebrates cutting-edge trends and art movements in an international context.

News published by silvia
James Ensor (1860–1949) was a major figure in the Belgian avant-garde of the late nineteenth century and an important precursor to the development of Expressionism in the early twentieth. In both respects he has influenced generations of later artists. This exhibition presents approximately 120 works, examining Ensor's contribution to modernity, his innovative and allegorical use of light, his prominent use of satire, his deep interest in carnival and performance, and his own self-fashioning and use of masking, travesty, and role-playing. Examples of Ensor's paintings, prints, and drawings are installed in an overlapping network of themes and images to produce a complete picture of this daring, experiential body of work. Ultimately, this exhibition presents James Ensor as a socially engaged and self-critical artist involved with the issues of his times and with contemporary debates on the very nature of modernism. The exhibition, which is accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue, will travel to the Musée d'Orsay, Paris, October 2009–February 2010.

News published by silvia
The degree of fame enjoyed by the works of Hermann Obrist (1862–1927) has little relation to their art-historical importance. In Munich in the 1890s, the Swiss-born sculptor established the German variation of the Art Nouveau movement – Jugendstil – which merged the intricate craftsmanship of the applied arts with the aesthetic demands of the liberal fine arts.

However, more importantly, with his fountains and tombs Obrist created the first abstract sculptures that developed a language of their own through the interaction of organic and inorganic structures – something that cannot be simply included under the heading ›Jugendstil‹.

Apart from reconstructing an œuvre that has become largely unknown, the exhibition illustrates the considerable artistic and scientific importance that Obrist’s idea of combining imagery and contemporary scholarship still has to this day. This interrelation with the world of science can also be found in contemporary art. In his treatment of photography, Obrist went beyond the traditional understanding of sculpture and paradigmatically opened up new paths for the art of the 20th century. For the very first time, this exhibition will bring together pieces bequeathed to the Staatliche Graphische Sammlung München (State Print Collection) and works in the collection of applied art at the Museum für Gestaltung Zürich (Design Museum in Zurich) housed in the Museum Bellerive, providing a comprehensive picture of the œuvre created by the draughtsman, sculptor and theoretician. Major contemporary figures and friends, including August Endell, Henry van de Velde and Rudolf Steiner, enable us to see Obrist’s art within a wider context.

Obrist’s last public appearance was at the ›Exhibition for Unknown Architects‹ staged by the ›Arbeitsrat für Kunst‹ in Berlin in 1919, where he was considered a father figure by the younger generation of Expressionist architects and sculptors. The exhibition is rounded off by taking a look at

the work of Rudolf Belling, Hermann Finsterlin, Wenzel Hablik, Hans Poelzig and Bruno Taut in conjunction with Obrist’s abstract sculptures. The biomorphic structures in Hermann Obrist’s barely known sculptural œuvre at the Pinakothek der Moderne demonstrate their contemporary qualities in the sculpture and architecture of the modern day.
