LA TEMPERATURA DE LA SOMBRA Ryoichi Noguchi Tanizaki apuntaba, en su ensayo clásico Elogio de la sombra, la diferencia entre una estética occidental basada en el entusiasmo por lo resplandeciente y una estética oriental basada en el culto a la sombra. La sombra, para este autor, significaba también la pátina del tiempo, la mancha del tiempo, una sabiduría entendida como legado de una cultura tradicional y, más hondamente, como respeto por el camino de la naturaleza. En Occidente, por el contrario, la pasión apolínea por la luz y el pulido brillante representaba la exaltación de lo nuevo, el dominio de la razón y el avance de la técnica. Por tanto, tenemos presentados aquí dos polos donde lo oriental es reivindicado místicamente y supone una reverencia a lo ancestral y a lo misterioso: frente a la transparencia aséptica de una piscina clorada, la claridad verdosa de un estanque lleno de vida. Esta tensión es el marco de la investigación pictórica de Noguchi, donde los cuerpos emergen en el claroscuro, mostrándose y ocultándose, sin perfiles absolutamente precisos, sin definición absolutamente explícita; abiertos al enigma de lo impreciso, de lo implícito. Así, la sustancia humana se presenta como una verdad en la penumbra, una verdad que evoca, matizada, espesa, insondable, que escapa a la clausura total de una luz deslumbradora. Más allá del límite de los contornos, del brillo de la superficie, del imperio de la forma rotunda, los rostros y cuerpos asoman como la punta de un iceberg, respetando el vínculo con una incógnita profunda. Durante el Renacimiento, Leonardo señalaba en sus notas la importancia de la sombra para conceder verosimilitud a la representación (en la perspectiva, en el sfumato). Valga citar también a Rembrandt, por ser otro referente clave en el artista, y en general hacer constar la relevancia del tema de la sombra como manifestación del alma, de lo oculto, de lo espiritual, de fuerzas inconscientes. La pregunta por la temperatura de la sombra es por tanto la pregunta por la naturaleza de lo invisible, por lo invisible de nuestra naturaleza. Una sombra que no es simplemente un efecto secundario, inerte, muerto, sino una presencia viva, una consistencia que revela la unidad y el espesor infinito de lo real, el espesor infinito del deseo que podemos percibir en la belleza de las tablas y dibujos de Noguchi.
