YouTube channel TechRax wonders if an iPhone 5S can survive being run over by a train. Spoiler alert: No, it can't.

Durability testing has been a hallmark of the smartphone era since the introduction of the first Apple iPhone in 2007, and it's usually in the form of the drop test given that's the most common wear-and-tear our handsets suffer with everyday use.

That hasn't stopped some more outlandish efforts, like dropping a smartphone from a multiple-story building, smashing one with a hammer, or punching a quarter-sized hole in a gold iPhone 5S with a .50 caliber bullet.

Yet how would the iPhone 5S hold up against a train? A stupid idea, you might think. Perhaps illegal to even test out. You would be correct on both counts. That didn't stop popular durability testing YouTube channel TechRax from making this video, whereupon two different iPhone 5S devices are, as one might expect, obliterated by a fast-moving train.

While it's not clear whether or not an iPhone could actually derail a train, and we don't really need to find out, it's definitely not a smart activity. After all, we can all reasonably assume that no phone, not even theiPhone 6, needs to be train-proof.

A beggar who lay at the side of a road pretending he had no legs was moved on by police who made him stand up and walk away. The man lay slumped on his front in Chengdu, in Sichuan Province, China, with his legs tucked under him, and his jeans stretched out to make it appear he had no legs.

He is approached by a police officer, who bends down and talks to him for some moments. The officer then reaches out and helps the man to his feet before guiding him across the road. Chengdu is one of a number of cities where officials have tried to clamp down on begging. They have staged aggressive campaigns to restrict begging in central areas. People living in the Sichuan provincial capital have been asked by the Civil Affairs Bureau not to give money to beggars and to report them to so called salvation management centres.

Similar campaigns have been waged in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and other big urban centres. Anti beggar bus stop chairs, made of steel and designed to be slippery, have been installed in Chengdu to stop beggars being comfortable.

One-second-a-day videos have practically become their own art form in the past couple of years — whether the videos in question are chronicling the lives of a grown man or a newborn infant. There's even an app for that, of course. But no one-second-a-day video you've ever seen, or are likely to see, will have the impact of this ad for the charity group Save the Children UK.

The ad begins with a girl on her 8th birthday in a comfortable suburban British setting. It continues with a second's worth of each normal activity you might expect from a Western child of that age — eating a frozen treat, turning her nose up at vegetables, trying on lipstick, riding a bike, trick-or-treating.

Only the more astute will spot the bad news as it flies by in the background, such as on the front page of her father's newspaper: "Government declares martial law."

The rest of the video is a horror show reminiscent of the 2009 movie Children of Men, which imagined a future Britain torn apart by terrorism, refugees and a repressive government. In the end, Save the Children's point is well-made: "Just because it isn't happening here, doesn't mean it isn't happening."

The civil war in Syria has been going on for three years now, and more than 2.5 million Syrians have been forced to flee their homes in that time, according to the United Nations. Nearly all of them are being housed in refugee camps in surrounding countries. Some 10,000 children have died in the conflict. Save the Children estimates that a total of 5 million Syrian kids have been displaced or otherwise affected by the war, inside and outside the country.

The Man Who Made the Period Safe for the Women of India

A school dropout from a poor family in southern India has revolutionised menstrual health for rural women in developing countries by inventing a simple machine they can use to make cheap sanitary pads.

Arunachalam Muruganantham is an inventor from rural Coimbatore in the southern state of Tamil Nadu, India who uncovered the need for an inexpensive solution to unsanitary and unhygienic practices around menstruation in rural India. He created and patented a machine which could manufacture low-cost sanitary pads for less than a third of the cost of commercial pads.

He has plans to expand the availability of his product to 106 countries.

Invention

Muruganantham founded the company, Jayaashree Industries, which markets these machines to rural women all over India and provides them with employment and a way to uplift them from poverty. His innovation has been praised for its simplicity and cost-effectiveness, and his commitment to social aid has earned him several awards. Despite offers from several corporate entities to commercialize his venture, he has refused to sell out and continues to provide these machines to self-help groups (SHGs) run by women all over India.

Women's wellness

Muruganantham's invention has changed the lives of women in India. In some countries, reusable or makeshift pads are still used to collect menstrual blood. Rags, soil, and mud are also reportedly used for collecting menstrual flow. Muruganantham's machine creates jobs and income for many women, and affordable pads afford many more women the opportunity to lead regular lives during menstruation.

Shaded from the sun beneath a large archway, one of them, 25-year-old Umar Parthak, said of the napkins: "We feel a lot more freedom. It gives us a lot more freedom to go out. Also, the rags that we previously used were not hygienic."^[3]
