We had a great time with Katie and Damian, documenting their beautiful New Orleans wedding in the historic St. Mary’s Assumption Church! Katie’s wedding day started off with bridal prep at the Windsor Court Hotel in downtown New Orleans. The rain held out and we were able to do their First Look and portraits outside, and even ran into Keanu Reeves!

After they exchanged vows at St. Mary’s it was time to party with one of the great New Orleans wedding bands The Boogiemen, and her entire wedding party made sure the dance floor at The Chicory was packed all night! The newlyweds had a fun send off with a Second Line and confetti toss as they departed in the Rolls Royce! Katie & Damian were such a laid-back and sweet couple to work with, and not once stressed about anything on their big day.

Katie even surprised Damian with the ultimate groom’s cake that featured all of his loves….LSU, fishing, hunting, only thing missing was a figuring of Katie in a duck blind to truly encompass all of his loves!Editors love to know the story behind the album. Add the scoop here.

This lovely watercolored wedding invitation comes to us from Oana Popescu of Watercolored Wedding, based in Bucharest, Romania!

This invitation design was custom-made for a special client of mine. She came to me with this original and unique idea of illustrating these two lovers under a “tree of love”, symbolising the bride and groom and their love for each other. She also asked me to write their names in my hand lettered calligraphy font and I have also illustrated their initials on the tree, like they where carved on wood. The invitation card is double layered, the color of the second layer being perfectly combined with their wedding colors.

It was Memorial Day weekend, Joshua had all the details planned out on how he was going to asked Jennifer to be his wife. The two were going to spend the weekend up in Payson, Northern Arizona, with his family in a cabin. Jennifer knew Joshua had bought the ring so with that in mind she was especially stylish and perfectly manicured for that engagement ring.

It was May 22, 2015. The two were to meet at Joshua’s home at 5pm and then drive up North together. That same day, Jennifer needed to get a new social security card at the DMV and of course, the wait there was a magnitude. It was around 7:30pm when Jennifer arrived at his house. Joshua had told her to meet him on the patio so they could wait out rush hour traffic.

When Jennifer arrived she recounted her whole DMV experience. It was in mid-sentence that Joshua interjected a question. (Background story: The two leading up to this day had been reading the Fellowship of the Rings, a Lord of the Rings book together. ) Joshua then asked her to explain what was going on in the story.

Jennifer then opened the book to explain what they had read thus far and as she did she saw a glimmer of something shiny hidden within the very words of Lord of the Rings… her engagement ring. Joshua then got down on his knee and asked Jennifer, “Will you marry me?” Jennifer for her response took the ring and sealed her yes with a kiss. Joshua you are brilliant!

Good news: the youngest generation of adults is the most egalitarian generation of adults. Gender roles have gotten blurrier, the restrictions on women working and men helping around the house have been discarded, and there are undoubtedly more “equal” marriages than ever before.

At least in theory.

In practice, women are still more likely to handle domestic and child-related activities within millennial marriages. According to a study in the American Sociological Review, “men and women, ages 18 to 32 have egalitarian attitudes about gender roles, across education and income levels. But when faced with a lack of family-friendly policies, most fell back on traditional roles.”

The article attributes this partially to policies that give women maternity leave, while men don’t get paternity leave – nor are they willing to take it in most instances.

What I found even more interesting was how people’s perceptions changed after having kids.

Gender roles have gotten blurrier, the restrictions on women working and men helping around the house have been discarded, and there are undoubtedly more “equal” marriages than ever before.

“Only 35 percent of employed millennial men without children said they thought men should be breadwinners and women should be caregivers…But of millennial men who were already fathers, 53 percent said it was better for mothers and fathers to take on traditional roles.”

“It’s not that they’ve thrown over their ideals, it’s just enacting those are much harder given the workplace and cultural structures they’re encountering,” said Pamela Stone, a sociologist at Hunter College.

Makes sense to me. I firmly believe that men and women can do whatever they want. My wife had the option of continuing with her job of 16 years. She started with 3 months maternity leave, got a 3 month extension, and then declared it “eternity leave.” We’re fortunate that she gets to do what she wants and I get to do what I want.

But for young couples who can’t afford to live on one income and can’t afford a nanny, someone is most likely going to have to sacrifice his/her career for the good of the family. So far, that sacrifice continues to be made by women, as only 8 percent of millennial men are taking on primary child care responsibilities.

Kristen and Erich contacted Magnolias + Honey within weeks of their engagement to discuss ideas for their engagement portraits. The lake behind Kristen’s parent’s house had to be used. Kristen’s hair and makeup were both done by Magnolias + Honey’s owner, Brittney. Kristen’s dress is a maternity gown purchased off of Etsy and was safety pinned to keep from opening up. (no, Kristen is not expecting). Kristen and Erich will be married in Bay Saint Louis, Mississippi on November 7th, 2015.
