Vintage Tennis Racquet Makeover - Jewelry Organizer!

This is a great project for all you tennis lovers out there. Especially, the younger players that never had to swing the old wooden ones!!!

I have been finding and buying old wooden rackets (racquets?) the past year. I love old vintage sports equipment like these rackets, as well as, the old wooden persimmon golf clubs from my great grandfather. Most of them are beautiful and I wouldn't want to change a thing about them! But, some are just right for transformation!

First, I make sure the racket isn't too warped (it's okay if it is just slightly warped)

Clean it up as well as you can - it might need some light sanding for those areas that might have taken a little frustrated abuse (say, hit the net a few times or, like my husband did, toss it into some trees)

Prime it. Just because it has been held and tossed a bunch. Keep in mind this sweet racket could have lots of sweat and tears that you don't want showing up later. I primed this racket in our old company painting room. It looks yucky but there is a huge ventilation draw and I can paint no matter the weather!

I like to add large cup hooks to the handle for necklace/bracelet storage. Most rackets hold 5 easily but, you could add more or less. I think 5 is a good number - it's not too crowded and not too sparse.

Then, I spray paint the racket with 2 coats of whatever color I want. Follow that up with a few coats of poly sealer for a long life. (Note: spray is best for this project)

And now you have a unique one of a kind piece for that tennis star in your life! Or, maybe keep it for yourself?

Warm Hands make Warm Hearts

Just another quick tute on making rice hand warmers. I'm sure you have seen these around for a good while and, I have to confess I have made quite a few as well as larger ones for soothing backaches and sore shoulders. This set is a small gift for my daughter on Valentine's. She is an assistant Div. I golf coach and they use hand warmers quite a bit. This set was made from scraps from my latest pillows. I keep saving scraps and finally made myself make something with some! I have another project using scraps for my other daughter that I hope to share soon!

So, it's for Valentine's Day, right? Why not a heart hand warmer?

Make a template. Remember how you cut out hearts as a kid? Fold the paper and cut out half a heart so it is symmetrical. But, it doesn't have to be perfect. No, not at all! I think next time I will get a little more dramatic and have fun with it

Materials used:

100% cotton fabric. pre-washed

100% cotton thread

dry rice

You need to use 100% cotton fabric and thread because these babies are gong into the microwave to heat. You don't want your fabric and thread to have a meltdown in there - trust me on this.

Trace the template onto the wrong side of the fabric. I took a shortcut and pinned all 4 pieces together to cut. Oh, I forgot to mention you need 4 fabric heart pieces. But, you probably already figured that out :) Pin 2 heart pieces together with right side of fabric facing each other.

I started sewing (back stitching at the start) on one side of the heart

Sew all around the heart leaving a 1-1/2" or so opening. Back stitch again to keep this from unraveling when you turn it right side out.

Turn them right sides out, then press.

Now, it's time for the rice (or other dry bean, lentil, or grain filling you choose. I used rice this time but I have also used lentils. I think they seem to hold heat longer.

I rolled up my template to use as a funnel. Sorry, I didn't measure it out- just filled until I thought it was a good amount to hold in your hand.

Did I mention that I often "wing" it? I'm bad about taking some shortcuts.

You could stitch the opening up by hand but I was too lazy to go search for my needle so, I stitched very closely around the edge of the hearts.

NOW A NOTE BEFORE YOU HEAT THESE:

Please test for 15 seconds carefully. Microwaves vary and you don't want to burn anyone or anything! Heating time can also vary if you are using a different filler.

Peat Pots and Gesso Love - To the Moon & Back!

Short and simple post here. Take some 5" peat pots. They are popping up everywhere in anticipation of Spring! I used Jiffy Pots for this project. These came in a pack of six

Paint one layer of Gesso over the pot. Let dry.

Design your text (I used Microsoft 2010) Use different fonts and sizes to make your quote interesting. Or make it all the same - it is all up to you and what you want and love!

Then, print it on regular copy paper but, be sure to make it a mirror image. Most printers have that option in the advanced settings for printing. For my printer, I go to advanced settings and where it has the option for mirrored image, I choose ON.

Print image.

I then cut out each line just because I didn't want the large space my printer used between each line.

I started with the top line - added a liberal layer of Gesso to pot

and thin layer to printed side of text.

Applied the text where I wanted and rubbed it a few times to stick to pot. This is where it is a little touch and go and you really should test this on something first. I tested this on a peat pot that had a tear in the back side.

I found that using the back of a spoon to burnish for a bit was good. But it didn't stop there. It actually seemed that the transfer started to really happen once the paper was a little more moist from soaking up the Gesso. I burnished with the spoon then carefully used the edge of the spoon to rub more. Once the image looks darker it means it is starting to transfer.

At this point, you can gently peel back the paper to see if it is starting to transfer. I had no problem laying the paper back down if it needed more help to transfer. You can work with this as much as you want as long as it doesn't start drying on your peat pot. And REMEMBER - this is NOT going to be a PERFECT transfer. It is going to look distressed, antiqued, shabby, or whatever you like to call it. But, it will have lots of charm that you can't buy in a store! If needed, if really needed, you can touch this up with a fabric paint pen or Sharpie pen.

Once you have your text on the pot, paint the rest of it with Gesso, if you want, to keep it more consistent with 2 layers all over.

Well, as you know I love some Anthropology creativeness. A few months ago, I was enjoying a look/see in our local Anthropologie store. Their creations never cease to WOW! And yes, please, I want one of e.v.e.r.t.h.i.n.g! But... as much as I love their dreamy products, I have so much fun checking out their window fronts and other displays. I will go so far to say that in my next life, that is my dream job!

I was inspired by their fabric cactus. Here is my small effort!

After washing my dropcloth I watered down some Leaf Green Acrylic and painted it. Added a few other green paints with dry brush to give it a little more depth.

Made a pattern out of an old cereal box. Folded the fabric over (painted sides facing) and traced the pattern with chalk. Cut it out - ending up with 2 pieces.

stitched them together with right sides facing out. Sort of the opposite of what you would normally do.......

a little gesso on some peat pots. (Any of you that have followed this far - well thanks for being here! You are so special and I hope you will leave a comment so I can follow you too - if I'm not already following you!)

Okay - back to the next step.......I've had this project stuck in my head ever since I saw the fabric cacti all over our Anthropologie store. How to put this all together? I decided to reuse paper grocery bags. Cut it into strips, crush them up and use them to support my fabric cactus.

Cute - but I also tried topping it off with some pebble stones leftover from another project

New (Trouble with Trouble) drop cloth pillow!

Finally finished my newest pillow with one of my favorite quotes!

This pillow is made of drop cloth that I pre-washed Then created a mirror print on our laser printer at the office. (You can do this by going to Advanced Properties with most laser printers.) I do have one stubborn one at the office that won't let me do this. Grrrr If your printer doesn't let you mirror the image there are a few other options. Let me know - I would love to help if I can.

Taped it to the center of pillow and dabbed some Citra Solv with a cotton ball. If you don't already know the drill check out this tutorial from Lil Boo Blue. Or Google for many more :) It's a great technique but, I found that putting the Citra Solv (CS) on the print in a small area, rubbing hard with the back and side of the spoon, check to see if it worked then, move to the next few words rubbing lightly with the CitraSolv cotton ball as you go worked best for me. It gives the print a nice worn look.

And, you know it is so true..........trouble does start out as fun :)

Geeking up some coasters and helping reduce e-waste!

I never knew - never had a CLUE what wonderful equipment was sitting right under my nose at our family manufacturing plant until I started blogging in November 2010. All sorts of saws, metal equipment painting booth silk screening area and so much more. Plus vintage metal desks and chairs (like my Red Rooster Drafting stool) and shelving just screaming for new life in gorgeous colors! (Oh, how I wish there were more hours in my day!)
For a quick indoor project (yes, we are also having record highs in the 100s and Code Orange air all week like so many of you) I grabbed some old circuit boards and glued some thin cork on the bottom. These are 3-3/4" x 3-3/8" in size.

Turned them over and coated them with acrylic sealer to waterproof them, then tied them up with some twine laying around. This is a gift for one of my sweet geeky friends!

And just in case you didn't already know, e-waste (electronic waste) is a very fast growing waste problem for the earth (But, I bet you already knew that!) We have hundreds of obsolete circuit boards at our company alone. So, look for more circuit board projects, both large and small, to be posted soon!

Clear Chalkboard Paint

It's no secret that I LOVE using chalkboard paint whenever I can. So, a few months ago I wondered if you could add calcium or un-sanded grout to something like clear polyacrylic sealer and use it over regular paint to create a chalkboard. Well, it only took me several months to get back to that idea.

I started with what I already had - some Polycrylic and powdered calcium

The "guinea pig" for this project was a tray I bought at Goodwill and sprayed with some leftover Rustoleum Oil Rubbed Bronze paint. Still playing around with the ratios - I started with the same ratio as if I were using regular paint but it was way too thin. I kept adding calcium powder to thicken it up. So far, I'm pleased with the project. I'll share the final ratio soon - It's looking like 1 part calcium powder to 3 parts poly is best.
(And LOL - I don't mean to try to get all scientific here)

Project fail - But I Learned Something New!

The other week, I got a crazy random idea. It all started when I saw this little can of Copper Metallic spray paint.

I have been loving the mercury glass projects I keep seeing everywhere and so......my random side kicked in and I wondered if I could create the same finish with copper?

Well.....yes and no. I sprayed the copper metallic paint inside my glass vessel. Then sprayed the white vinegar/water solution (1:1) on the paint. My first try you see on the left. Didn't work so well for me. For my second try I sprayed the vinegar solution first then used the copper metallic spray over that. Let it dry a bit and used a cloth to gently remove spots to try to create the same mercury glass look with the copper I wasn't really happy with either result so I gave up and moved on to other projects.

I was hoping to make an awesome candle votive and maybe I will at some point But, as I said, it didn't turn out the way I planned it in my head. And that's okay.

But, in the meantime, I left the paper towel with the vinegar solution in the bottom of the first glass. For about a week. What a pleasant surprise to see the copper patina at the base of the first glass! Simply because I forgot to toss out the vinegar paper towel! So, I learned something and maybe, just maybe, it will lead to some new interesting creations. Maybe. And just maybe it will inspire some of you!

Colorful Wooden Tool Boxes with a Little bit Of Chalkboard Paint!

So..... a while back I posted about an old tool box that I made "pretty" by girling it up Fast forward to NOW and I am making my own and painting them whatever pretty color my heart desires! And woo hoo I have actually sold a few! Now, that's a good thing. Bad thing is I have put most of my tool trugs to use for me.

Testing new colors and color combinations. Maybe even a little paint dipping that is all the rage now :)

not a great picture but the green (Benjaman Moore Paradise Valley with blue chalkboard paint is my favorite so far) And stay tuned - I am trying some new ideas for the next tool box (yellow and turquoise are together one of my favorite combinations!) And glitter will be involved :)

Creating Chalkboard Cabinet Doors from Habitat Restore

Our local Habitat Restore has stockpiles of new and used cabinet doors priced at $1 each. Yep - one buck! So, now, I have a little stockpile of my own....

Here is an example of new ones. I started by sanding, then priming, so the paint (Benjamin Moore Paradise Valley) would not chip so easily. Then, using my Purdy XL cub brush, I painted the center with chalkboard paint. I adore this brush - I didn't use any painter's tape! Who doesn't love a good shortcut???

Then, I used one of my new favorite machines I just discovered at our plant to drill holes for the knobs. A very old but amazing drill press! You will be seeing more work with this baby. It has made my life so much easier! It can hold just about any drill bit I want to use - and drills it straight! Oh - I think I'm in love :)

Added these knobs I found at half price from Hobby Lobby - they were $1.50 each. Now, a peek at some of my projects with the cabinet doors I have been accumulating. (That's a nicer word than hoarding maybe?)

Big Bright Blue Shutter Jewelry Holder!

Once upon a time, I found some old shutters at Habitat Restore. (For real, it was around May of last year) I had so much fun with my first project, my old pink shutter, that whenever I find shutters anywhere I grab them! Here you see this shutter looking so lonely and bare on the old shower curtain I use for painting in the backyard.

Here is the paint to give it a new life! This is my youngest daughter's favorite color and, how convenient, that it comes in a spray can?

I sanded the shutters a bit then sprayed the paint right on - no priming, or any other prep work. Sweet! Added some knobs and drawer pulls I also bought at Restore - they were $1 each. Here is my favorite one. I think it would be so cute on a little boys dresser or maybe even whitewashed or glazed or painted!

Well, here it sits by the back door ready to get loaded into the car with tons of other stuff and travel with Julia to her college apartment. I wish I had a picture to share of it with her jewelry because it looks really great. She was sweet to send her Mom a picture but Mom lost it somewhere in her computer.

I will get another one and add it soon!

She has earrings hooked over the shutter slats and necklaces/bracelets on the knobs and handles. The upside down pull holds her earring studs. And she has pictures tucked into the slats. Oh - I hope to share a picture soon!

And her friends loved it so much that I have made 3 more jewelry organizers (and they are not all shutters) I hope to share those soon!

Finally finished my Dog Pillow!

I have been promising my daughter, Kathleen, that I would make her sweet Morkie a pretty pillow. That was, ummm, about 6 months ago. Today, I finally made it. I'm one of those that needs the fabric to "talk" to me for inspiration. And, I just bet, a lot of you understand!

So, I found my inspiration fabric at Hobby Lobby last week. It's a colorful paisley mixed with flowers on a black background. I love this fabric. Sad to say, I didn't write down the name of the fabric pattern and, when I went back to JoAnns, it was not there. They sold out of it fast. Well, live and learn....seems to be my theme lately.

Back to the pillow. I wanted it to fit a standard pillow which is usually 20 x 28 inches. I like to make my pillows a little smaller than any insert I will use - makes it a little more plumpy (is that a word?) It was originally going to be an envelope pillow but I decided, at the last minute, to experiment with an invisible zipper.

This is my attempt and I tried to follow the manufacturer's instructions. But, I gave up and sort of winged it. Pinned the right side of one zipper side to the right side of the fabric. Used my zipper foot to stitch as close as possible to the zipper teeth.

Pinned the other zipper half the same way (right side to right side) and stitched again.

Okay, not too bad a job.

Now for the fun part... final construction of the doggie pillow!

Pin the right sides together and stitch all around. FYI - I always forget to unzip before I finish the last side so I have to creatively find a way to unzip the pillow so I can turn it right side out.

Insert pillow and I am finished! Maybe. I think I want to round out the corners...

Ohh - one last thing. This is the next dog bed/pillow I want to make. Love it!

Pillow Day!

Today was pillow day for me. And it feels soooo good to finally start using some of the fabric I have been accumulating. One of my favorites is this one with pink and green animal/reptile silhouettes.

It is similar to one I used on an old Lonestar chair that I bought at Restore for $5.00. And, it was my first time using Annie Sloan Chalk Paint!

I love both these fabrics and think they would be adorable in a little girl's room. The pattern design is something you would expect more in a boy's room and that is one reason I love it!

Okay, so, back to my pillows. I made two with the first fabric. The 18" x 18" pillow back was made with painter's drop cloth and has a zipper in the back. My 14" square pillow is an envelope pillow using the same fabric on the back. They are different because I am experimenting a bit here. (More to come)

Not the best picture - I will replace it soon.... And put on your shades for the next pillow. I love this fabric - it is so happy cheerful! (For some reason it looks a little "Dr. Seussish" to me - and that is all anything takes to catch my eye) This 18" square pillow is another envelope one.

(FYI - the envelope pillow is my favorite to make. Since I am NOT so great at tutorials, check out this site for instructions. Or, just Google it, as my kids say!) More pillows and lovely fabrics coming soon......

Cardboard Creations!

In my short stint at Design school, one of my favorite projects was to design a chair that I could actually sit in, and it had to be made from corrugated cardboard. (Wish I still had the chair to show you but, for some reason, it never made the move to our new house. Bummer) So, a while back, I decided to make something small with one of the many cardboard boxes around the house.

I used the Vitatops box that my oldest daughter bought a while back.

They came in this sturdy box. So, when I decided to make a cardboard project this was the box!

My favorite Creme de Menthe/Oreo Fudge Ice Cream Pie!

When I started blogging a year ago today I had no clue what direction I was heading into and still don't have a clue. Story of my life - clueless but happy :) But, I am having pure fun and that's what counts. Right? I started with a few recipes and
today I want to share with you one of my ultimate favorite desserts! It is pretty simple to make, yet it tastes elegant! My photograph does not do it justice. ( The Creme de Menthe syrup just gives this a little different flavor. And the syrup does not have alcohol so this delicious treat is good to go for everybody! A great dessert for this Holiday season!

Crème de Menthe/Oreo Fudge

Ice Cream Pie

20 to 30 Oreo cookies

3 squares unsweetened chocolate

1 stick margarine

2 cups powdered sugar

3 eggs, beaten

½ gallon vanilla ice cream

¼ cup crème de menthe syrup

Lightly grease a 9 x 13 inch pan

Crush cookies and evenly line them in the pan

Melt butter and chocolate together.

Add beaten eggs to mix and stir until thickened

Stir in powdered sugar and mix thoroughly

Pour this evenly over the cookie crumbs

FREEZE THIS AT LEAST ONE HOUR

Soften ½ gallon Ice Cream.

Once soft, stir in ¼ cup Crème de Menthe syrup

Spread over frozen cookie crumb layer

Top with Oreo crumbs

FREEZE OVERNIGHT IF POSSIBLE

Remove from freezer 10 to 15 minutes before serving

Enjoy!

Creme de Menthe syrup can be tough to find in some areas. I had a tough time this year but finally found it at Caribou Coffee Shop! I originally found it at World Market. and Starbucks.

You can add food coloring if you like.

This is an old recipe that I had before frozen yogurt was available. I think I might try experimenting with frozen yogurt next time.

Bread Box Clutter Keeper

Weeks ago I found this old $2 bread box at Goodwill. I am always in search of ways to hide clutter. And this could hide a lot! (Warning - put on your shades for the next photo!)

So....I grabbed one of my favorite spray paints, Rustoleum 2x in Berry Pink. I found a pink and green small ceramic pull at Hobby Lobby (Their knobs are all 50% off this week - this cutie was $1.00!) And yea, it looks really bright here but this is actually a wonderful color. So cheerful

I have not done anything to the interior, yet. And I'm thinking of stressing or glazing at some point but, for now, this sits in my kitchen hiding most of the things we use daily. And...I actually found another box just like this! I'm trying to decide what color to use on the second one. It will be storing some of my art supplies and I plan on giving it a very different look than it's "sister"!

Some days really make you think

Every once in a while a day comes along that packs some punch! Today was all that for me. It started with the usual cup of coffee and some bleary eyes trying to read the local paper. And yea, I still love holding a real newspaper in my hands. It's in my blood and i will tell you about that later :)
But, I made it into the office earlier than usual in hope of finishing early. I wanted to spend the afternoon with my sweet pup by my side as I finally had a chance to work on some paint projects. They are stacking up at an incurable rate here.
So, I get a call from my youngest daughter, that I have been ~~harassing~~ encouraging to join  pinterest. Just because I know she would love it. She wanted an invite from me! How special is that? I sent it.
Then next text was Mom, we are on lockdown. I texted back but, no response. Kept texting and texting. I go online looking and see this tweet Finally, after an hour, received an email letting me know she was safe and her classroom building was secure. Tears of joy but still worried.
Apparently, somebody spotted a person with what looked like a rifle on campus.
The school and city police locked it all down securely and went from building to building. Excellent job by all.
The all clear was given around 1:00. Turns out it was an UMBRELLA, not an Ak47. I am very thankful for how the school handled this.
What spooked me even more was the poor innocent really embarrassed guy was locked down in the same building with my baby girl! Yea, what if...Life is scary
So......now we have tornado watches in the area tonight. I can handle that.
What a day...

Okay - just spotted this for free on my local craigslist. I don't know why but I'm intrigued.......The ad says:

Just the inner and outer door shell, no interior pieces or wiring or glass.

Thinking way outside my box that there are some possibilities here. It might look good on a wall? With some of my favorite plants? Or with some awesome quote? With knobs or some car thingys to hang stuff?

Duct Tape - You have come a Long Way!

Oh sweet old reliable Duct Tape. You aren't just Silver anymore. Your colors and patterns (and fans) are growing by leaps and bounds. Yay for you! We have used you from time to time around our house for utilitarian purposes. But you keep popping up on pinterest and blogs so I wanted to test your crafty side. I want to share some projects I found on pinterest but, first, I will start with some quick, simple, and very low cost attempts by moi. In fact, I believe your middle name is "cheap". Right? That is the beauty of you. Cheap, tough, and highly functional. And always reliable :)

Here is what I started with

First up - a $1 candlestick from the Dollar Tree. (I think we all have used these in many different projects - are they not great? I mean, the DT sells out of them often) Used my Michael's 40% coupon and bought this pink and black Zebra Duct tape. Let's just see how far a roll can go!

Cut the DT into strips and covered the candlestick

If you want to take it another step further, buy a $1 four inch wooden round plaque. (Found mine at Hobby Lobby) I painted mine with Black gloss spray paint. Then glue it to the candlestick and now you have a small stand for cupcakes, small displays, etc. Whatever your heart desires. And yea.....ignore the ivy that is taking over my yard..

Then, I sprayed a $1 tray (Dollar Tree again friends!) and added some strong magnets with the same black gloss spray paint. Covered the center with the Duct tape. Voila! A great place to display pictures, keep notes - whatever

Okay, still have tape left and I am eyeing my empty 3 pound can of Costco coffee. Wrapped it in more DT and spray painted the lid with the black gloss. This is a big can and I'm not quite sure how I will use it. But I will

Still tape left. Wowza! I just had to try it on a large empty yogurt container, like my random moss covered one. Now, my sweet little fern has a zippy new home!

Purple Purple Golf Ball Holder!

Well, I picked up this old grungy golf ball display case at Goodwill a while back. And before you come to any conclusions, I am not a golfer. If you ever see me swinging a club you need to head for cover ASAP! But, three of my kids are, and it has paid their way through college. I do love the sport and enjoyed walking courses following my kids for five to six hours a pop! Anyway, on to the redo...

Here is the piece - I think it was 3 bucks - when I bought it at GW.

oh yea. It's officially an EWWWW!

The back was stapled on so it was easy to remove by gently tapping it from the front side. Then, the fun part - ripping that old green moldy fabric off the board. Stapled it back on and spray painted away with the Grape paint I used for my Halloween teacup planter I'm really starting to love this color...

Started adding some golf balls my kids have collected from other schools and some autographed ones. And yep - that's my little pumpkin one. Looks like he is having a big time with his new buddies! But, wait - it's a little warped and I did not see this at all until this picture. Grrr. I'll fix it tomorrow. Promise...

Isn't it so funny when you think you have something finished to find a big flaw? Like you, my friends, sometimes we just have to roll with the punches.
