So I'm making pie today (this is a break while the three big batches of dough chill before rolling), freezing it, and baking it just in time for the big family gathering early this week. Then The Fella and I spend Thursday home alone together. I'm making and freezing teeny tiny pies for us, too. Delightful!

Are Levi's shrink-to-fit jeans clearly labeled as such?

Are there such things as non-shrink-to-fit 501's?

Nowhere on my jeans does it say shrink-to-fit, but I just want to make sure.

MetaChat and Twitter

As Gomichild just mentioned, we're hoping to use Twitter as a way of keeping folks in touch. That said... do you know who registered MetaChat as a username on Twitter, and would you be willing to give it to us as a feed for the site?

But even when it comes included with the music files, it's usually easy to find - or, despite my pitifully weak 'Shop-Fu, to produce - something more to my taste.

Latest example: this Mravinsky recording of Shostakovich's Symphony No. 10.

Look at that album art. Then compare it to this early Google image seach result for "Shostakovich 1953" [the year the 10th was written].

Which of those two images would you say better evokes the spirit of Shostakovich's Symphony No. 10?

Of course, in the digital age, an "album" is an artistic concept - not a physical object. So I suppose I'm showing my age to think of these images as "what the music comes in".

Didn't see much in the way of vegetables and fruit in there, but maybe they grow those themselves. I thought it was ingenious to buy quarter-pound portions of things in order to get a whole pound free.

We don't have coupons in the UK, so it always intrigues me when I'm in the States (particularly in Ohio) to see how many sheets fall out of the newspapers with pages and pages of coupons.

Traumatic bathroom encounter on Caltrain!

So both BART and Caltrain are late today, I already had to pee really badly by the time the Caltrain finally arrived, and it's one of those ultra-slow stop-at-every-station trains. So no way I could possibly hold it.

Keep in mind this is one of the old, clunky trains, so there's only one car with a bathroom. I found it eventually, stepped inside the little metal closet, and tried to shut the door. It wouldn't shut, so I kept trying to wiggle it open and closed until something gave and it finally shut. Great, now my hands were probably covered in ten different flu strains, and I didn't bring my hand sanitizer.

Then I opened the toilet lid, and BAM. THE. WORST. SMELL. EVER. Like the worst porta potty you've ever been in, left to ferment in an air-tight container for several weeks. This toilet clearly contained a supernatural wormhole to Satan's sewer.

So I pulled my shirt up over my mouth and nose and tried to breathe as little as possible. When I was done, I rinsed of my hands in the grimy sink (there was no soap, of course), then attempted to use a paper towel to open the door. Of course. It was stuck again. Clearly two hands and nearly all ten fingers were going to be required, and no paper towel was going to withstand the force of maneuvering that blasted door open.

So here I sit on the slow-ass train, typing to you, with filthy hands and probably emanating that diabolical odor, hoping against all odds that I don't have to blow my nose until I get I chance to wash up. If the smell reaches you through this post, please accept my apologies. And it might be a good idea to wash your hands. No telling what germs might have jumped from my fingers to the text on this page.

Our washer broke,

so we ordered a new one on the Lowe's website at 9pm Pacific Wednesday night, for "overnight" delivery.

The website made it sound like they'd have to call during business hours to arrange the delivery, so we figured they'd call Thursday to arrange a Friday delivery.

Instead, we get a call Thursday morning saying they're at the house. We were not, so without any drama they rescheduled for this morning. They showed up, were super-nice, took the old washer and brought in the new one, were in and out in a half-hour, and refused a tip.

I had gotten so used to despairing about the inconvenience of these sorts of things that it's just really nice to be wrong.

I'm making a ham and bean soup and it's too acidic. What can I add that will tone down the acidity? It called for diced tomatoes and a splash of lemon juice and I overdid it.

Plus, there's so much of it. Every time I check it, it seems to have doubled. We're going to be eating this for a long time (or I'll freeze it and forget about it).

After months of anticipation, the new In-N-Out location just opened here. It's only a few hundred yards from where I work. So I thought my 30 minute lunch break might be enough to get there, use the drivethrough, and get back.

As if. There were close to 100 cars lined up - in addition to the dozens of people waiting to get in the door. Even with their legendary efficiency, the heroes in white would be lucky to serve that many customers by dinner time.

The McNuggets I had to settle for were bitter chicken indeed.

I just made these for the kids at the Y, I did the super-fast variation where you just dump everything in the food processor and whirl.

They came together in about 20 minutes from getting off my but to pouring out the dough, and baked for 15. They look good, but I think I indented too far on most of them and worry they're going to snap in half when I de-sheet them.

The one I tasted for, you know, QC purposes, was super yummy.

so I can't access either of my gmail accounts from my computer, or the google status page.
And yet I can access on my iphone (using the phone's mail app, not the google app or safari) just fine. And my gmail notifier is working, too.
Anyone else? Can someone check the status page and let me know what's going on?

Let me share.

- Dice a yellow onion. Wipe eyes.
- De-skin those four uncooked pork and leek sausages you were wondering what you were going to do with and add them to the onion.
- Sprinkle liberally with dried sage. (Note that it's really too bad the sage plant in the window box doesn't have much foliage on it.) Add lots of fresh-ground black pepper and a little salt.
- Add about a cup of the brown rice your husband cooked earlier.
- Add an egg.
- Moosh. Mooshmoosh.
- Blanch 12 or 14 good-sized cabbage leaves in salted water and drain. Savoy cabbage totally rocks for this.
- Put 2 or 3 tablespoons' worth of the sausage goodness in the middle of a cabbage leaf, fold into a tidy packet, and secure with a toothpick. (In the UK toothpicks are called cocktail sticks, which is silly because they are too short to go in a cocktail and besides, who wants a sharp stick of wood in your drink?)
- Have a heated argument with your husband about how the water heater works. Mutter to yourself as you
- Put all the pretty packets into a big skillet and slop on 3 or 4 cups of the tomato sauce you made last week.
- Cover and simmer gently for 40 minutes.
- NOM. (Don't forget to remove the toothpicks.)

About halfway down, someone recounts a story of some cattle rustlers selling their stolen livestock at a convenience store. The buyer "just thought he was getting a pretty good deal." Now, I am a provincial Northeasterner who has spent his whole life in cities and suburbs, but wouldn't an offer to purchase cattle off a truck in a convenience store parking lot set off some alarm bells? Or are people more casual about that sort of thing in the country?

It turns out that google hated my site for a while coz some douchebag hax0rz put a subtle thing in there that returned a bunch of spam links to googlebot (I find this list kinda amusing)

And I didn't really care but because google is taking its sweet time to reindex everything I'm a bit annoyed at the peeps that did it thinking something is really unfair here. A friend of mine recently split with her husband and she has asked me to remind her of what an arsehole he was to her if I think she is considering going back to him. I figured, apart from normal reminding, I might make a mix CD of music to help remind her. Unfortunately, I can't think of much. She's in her 30s and likes country (but I don't hold that against her) and rock.
