What does metal mean to me?

For me it has always been the constant in life, something that will never judge me. It's hard, soft, heart felt and hateful.
I think we all need that something that we can turn to to pull, push or drag us through the dark times or to help us party.
The people who are into metal are (somewhat) a family, you may not all like the same bands but when your in the pit, running a fucking muck there is no better feeling, until you get out of the pit covered in sweat from a hundred plus other mangy cunts.

3 Inches Of Blood have toured Australia before, what's the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Australia?

After many years of trying to set something up, we were finally able to tour Australia in December of 2010 as part of the No Sleep Til festival.
I used to think of kangaroos and Crocodile dundee, but now I think of Australia and remember how awesome it was to tour there.

You released an album "Long Live Heavy Metal" earlier this year, what should fan expect from this album?

Its the best album we've ever done. I expect fans of ours will thoroughly enjoy it because it is a pure heavy metal album.

Will you tour Australia in support of "Long Live Heavy Metal"?

We intend to because last time was amazing for us. At the moment we're having some difficulty making it happen.

Is there anything fans from this (or any other) country can do to help get your over here?

Mostly it's just timing, promoters are willing to have us over but its complicated putting a club tour together with the big festivals over there like Big Day Out and Soundwave potentially conflicting with scheduling.

Touring has it's ups and downs for all bands, what's the one thing, good, bad or ugly, that stands out when you think of touring?

Mostly just the downtime when you're not playing or doing something constructive. There's a lot of boredom sometimes, its not a 24 hour party.

Do you prefer personal shows or festivals?

If there's an energetic crowd then both situations are good.

Beer or wine?

Mainly beer, but wine has a different buzz to it and I enjoy that every once in a while too.

Dita Von Teese or Angela Gassow?

Neither are really my type, I'd choose my wife anyways.

What album are you listening to in your car right now?

I mostly listen to sports radio while i'm driving, but otherwise I just put my ipod on shuffle and see what happens

What's you sport/team of choice? What are their chances of winning anything? Any message for the coach or players? (they probably won't every see this but it could be funny to hear you giving them shit for doing a crappy job)

I follow (ice) hockey. Specifically my hometown team, the Vancouver Canucks. It's frustrating these days because the league has locked out the players due to both sides being unable to negotiate a new collective bargaining agreement, so the season is in jeopardy. Whatever happens, it's going to be a shortened season if at all. It pisses me off cuz I'm passionate about hockey and fans like me are being deprived of the sport we love cuz the already wealthy team owners and players are too greedy to come to some sort compromise.
In the meantime I'm following the local Canadian football league team, the BC Lions. They are the defending league champions and are poised to repeat this year too.

If you weren't in a band, what would you be doing?

Probably working for bands either in a tour manager position or something like that.

Any parting message for your fans?

Can't wait to get back to Australia. Hope we see you all soon.

Metal For A Cure 2012

As we all know, there as some dodgy fucks in the metal world, singing about all sorts of fucked up shit while urging their fans to smash each other with a reckless abandon, which we all love, but every now and then someone steps up to use his evil for good.

In steps Tim from South Australian band Arcadia, who, with a couple of mates, started Metal For A Cure.

I briefly caught up with Tim to discuss the "who's, why's and when's"

Tell us a little about the show and the cause behind it.

Metal for a Cure started back in 2010, with the premise of raising money for charities, while showcasing local metal bands.This is the third year we've run this event, and over the past few shows, we've raised over $10,000 for various charities, including the National Breast Cancer Foundation, the Leukaemia Foundation, the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia & Save The Children Australia. This year, we're raising money for beyondblue ( http://www.beyondblue.org.au/ ) who raise awareness and fund treatment for conditions such as depression, anxiety and bi polar disorder.

How did you guys get involved?

The event started out as three friends who had all been connected to people who had suffered from cancer. We were all talking one night, and by the next day, we had decided that we were going to organise a fund raiser. After the huge success of the first show, we decided to keep the event running, as a yearly show.

There will be a raffle for "metal for a cure 3", where can people buy tickets and when will it be drawn?

As with the past two shows, this event will feature a raffle. Tickets can be bought on the night, with the raffle drawn at the end of the evening.

Can businesses/bands get involved in the raffle? How/who can they contact?

Adelaide metallers Arcadia

Recently, I was contacted by Adelaide metalcore outfit Arcadia to take a listen to their album and give my feedback.

Now, personally I find E.P.'s a little hard to review, with five or six songs, your just getting the feel for the band ..... and it's over! but what Arcadia sent me was a split album, two songs from them and two from Bury The Fallen.

From the two songs on the album, Arcadia lack nothing in the talent or energy departments but maybe a little in originality.

I will however reserve total judgement till I can hear more.

Hello Adrian!
Hope all is well in Australia!

What is the name if your blog and what is it about?

Air Guitar! It is about a Global view of metal music – with top notch interviews from metal bands from various parts of the world, album reviews and an incredible dictionary of European metal festivals that I have attended or wish to attend.

Tell us a little bit about where you are from and what the metal scene is like there?

I am originally from the coastline of South Africa though I moved inland to be a part of the masses and that is where I began showing my mosh-pit face. The South African metal scene is developing and we are getting a surge of extreme metal bands as opposed to more traditional metal. Unfortunately South African metalheads and bands are in the music minority and they face a common challenge of a lack of finance, lack of venues and even promotion relations are a problem.
However, metalheads unite no matter where they are from and we (South Africans) always welcome international metal acts! We are waiting for the big four to return...!

What are the top 5 South African bands everyone should hear?

One my oldest and most loved bands is Agro. They are the first and only African band to play at Wacken Open Air (Germany) in 2006 and they will be making another appearance this year.
A few blogs and ‘zines have been raving and you should believe the hype because Wildernessking are blistering!
I saw this band live recently and their good as fuck – Bleeding Spawn!
If traditional metal and good production values are a high priority on your list I recommend Chromium! I have watched this band grow from the dingy bars to playing in the United Kingdom and then on my home ground alongside In Flames and they just get better each time.
And of course Sindulgence. Another name to add to your metal dictionary.

What is your opinion of the world metal scene?

What happened? The metal scene declined and went into a lull for a bit. Though, I am glad to see that heavy metal bands have begun peeping out of the crevices from the most unexpected places. Metal is still a niche market in many countries but metalheads are the ONLY dedicated music followers in the world!
When we look at the Middle East and see the great metal scene that has been created – you would think Finland probably had it too easy. Countries like Japan and India are sprouting some talented extreme metal bands yet we too often ignore their efforts. Even Australia has a great developing scene that is given very little international press.
Metal is expanding and casting its grand black wings on foreign lands – it will always be a niche market but there will always be a market.

Who was the first metal band that caught your attention?

A kid in my school made me a mix CD (of popular hits) but he never gave the correct disc in the album sleeve instead he had a Pantera album in it. That was my first taste of metal and the poison never left my body. It was a few years later that I found myself in possession of a Black Sabbath album and a strange collection of NWOBHM tracks.

If you could create your own 5 piece supergroup, who would be in it?

Iommi for the win! Dave Lombardo, Kirk Hammet, Ronnie James Dio (R.I.P), Max Cavalera
