Iron Maiden, Christchurch NZ, 29 April 2016

Live performance review by Vim Fuego — (I posted this on another forum, so instead of writing another review, I'll just cut-and-paste a bit...)

Saw Maiden last night. Fan-fucking-tastic!.

Set list:
1.If Eternity Should Fail
2.Speed of Light
3.Children of the Damned
4.Tears of a Clown
5.The Red and the Black
6.The Trooper
7.Powerslave
8.Death or Glory
9.The Book of Souls
10.Hallowed Be Thy Name
11.Fear of the Dark
12.Iron Maiden
Encore:
13. The Number of the Beast
14. Blood Brothers
15. Wasted Years

A few thoughts:

1.
They might be older, but this was easily better than the Somewhere Back
In Time tour. The energy was just as high, especially from Bruce, but
the stage show was just so much better. The Mayan theme just looks so
fucking good!

2. To all the nay-sayers about the new album (not from this forum. It seemed very well received here): Fuck.
Off. Live, those songs just fucking go off. No loss of momentum.
Nothing boring. Everything stacks up incredibly well vs. the old stuff.
Initially I was thinking about how cool it would be to see a few songs
from the albums from 1995 to 2010. There weren't any. Didn't miss them
because this stuff is just as strong live, and possibly stronger. Which
leads to...

3. Tears of a Clown is great live. I thought it was one of the weaker tracks on "Book of Souls", but it's not.

4. The Red & The Black also goes off live. The solos traded off in it are brilliant.

5.
Death or Glory is probably the best received of all the new tracks.
Why? Because of the reason it copped so much criticism initially(also not applicable here)- "climb
like a monkey". People started miming climbing whenever that phrase
came up, which made me cringe on first sight, but I was doing it too by
the end of the song! Makes such a refreshing change from fists and
horns. Bruce said in one of the early shows on the tour, two kids in the
front row had a banner saying "climb like a monkey" and started miming
the monkey climb thing, so he did it, and it's caught on everywhere. And
this was an NZ audience, often quite reserved and unwilling to
participate.

6. The Jannick haters can go fuck off too (for a third time, not applicable here!). Yes,
Adrian and Dave might be better guitarists, but both needed him, because
they looked fucking knackered about three songs in, and he picked up
the slack energy-wise. My step-son loved watching Jannick, never having
seen Maiden before, and thought he was great. Watching Adrian and Dave
play some of those solos is breathtaking at times, when you hear what is
coming from the speakers. There was one of the older songs (I forget
which) where they had changed some of the solos, which were faster and
more complex than on the studio album. Just fucking wow.

7. 'Arry is fucking staunch. Rock fucking solid, no flashy bullshit, and still loving his band and what he does.

8.
Nico is a fucking machine. Last time I saw Maiden we were positioned up
the side of the arena and couldn't actually see him properly. This time
we were dead in front. The old bugger just goes off all fucking night,
and never misses a beat. Loved seeing him lay into that massive drum
kit.

9. Bruce's tribute to Christchurch was nice. He said he
remembered how beautiful the city had been (it was, as far as cities
go), and that it had changed, with so much of it flattened, the people
killed, and the trees gone (a point I had missed, having being too close
to it), and the city might not be a beautiful again (it won't be
because most of the new buildings are hideous). But like so many other
people who have been here post-quakes, was impressed with the way people
seem to have coped, and the spirit of the people and place.

10.
Support band The Raven Age were a much better support band than Lauren
Harris last time. They played chuggy music somewhere between trad metal
and speed metal, but were a bit unmemorable. Their singer is a
reasonable frontman, but his singing style is a bit flat and boring, and
they really would benefit from a singer with a harsher voice.

11. There is nowhere in Christchurch which plays decent rock music for having a drink after the show.
The two so-called "rock" venues had stupid fucking drum-and-bass DJ
crap playing. So we ended up in the one with pool tables. Fucking
earthquakes destroyed all the other venues.

12. Double quarter pounders from McD's really hit the spot at 3 in the morning.

Overall,
it was a fucking great night out. This is probably the last chance
we'll get to see Iron Maiden in this part of the world, which is a
shame. If they do ever come back, I'll be first in line for tickets.

And I got one of these t-shirts (same as every second person there last night! )

Fates Warning & Kingcrow in Copenhagen, April 2014

Live performance review by Time Signature —
Fates Warning & <strike>Divided Multitude</strike> Kingcrow @ Amager Bio

One of the most important progressive metal bands of all time, Fates Warning graced Amager Bio in Copenhagen with their presence on April 23, 2014. The Norwegian progressive metal band Divided Multitude was originally slated as the support act, but, for some reason, they canceled, and the Italian progressive metal act Kingcrow were brought in as a replacement. I was actually looking forward to checking out Divided Multitude, but I was not at all disappointed at their replacement. Having heard Kingcrow's In Crescendo, I knew that the Italians' brand of accessible yet sophisticated progressive metal was good. Indeed, the Italians proved not only to be good in the studio but also live and they delivered a very convincing show. They played in front of an extremely small audience, but they looked like they were having fun and seemed determined to give the small crowd positive experience. Small though it was, the audience definitely seemed to enjoy Kingcrow's concert. I know I did, and I can only praise the Italians for stepping in at the very last minute and delivering a hell of a gig.

When Fates Warning took to the stage, the audience had tripled or perhaps even quadrupled in size, but we were nowhere near full house. Ray Alder made several comments on the small audience turnout, some humorous and most insuring people that he and the band were having a great time and that they were happy to still have fans after having been away for such a long time. Anyway, they definitely seemed to be having a great time on stage with Alder and bassist Joey Vera connecting well with the audience. The intimacy of the venue itself and the size of the audience made this connection even more powerful which, in turn, made the concert an even better experience, I think, than had it been in a huge venue in front of a massive audience. The remaining members were more focused on their playing than on the audience, but I detected several smiles on their faces, so I assume they were actually having a good time despite the small turnout. Their set naturally featured a number of tracks from Darkness in a Different Light, and, while the new album has not yet clicked with me fully, I must say that songs such as 'One thousand Fires', 'Firefly', and 'I Am' work extremely well live, and I think that this may perhaps be the major strength of the new album: the material on it is great live material. Thanks to the grooves and heavy beats, they are very easy to rock out to as an audience member. In addition to this new material, Fates Warning performed several classics such as 'Through Different Eyes', 'Life in Still Water', 'The Eleventh Hour', 'Point of View', 'Monument' and, incidentally, my three favorite tracks from from A Pleasant Shade of Gray. In fact, several of the songs they performed are among my favorite Fates Warning material ('Monument' is my favorite track by the band), so I was satisfied indeed. Granted, there were no Arch-era songs, and some fans might have been disappointed at that, but a Fates Warning set should not feature Arch-era songs just for the sake of featuring Arch-era songs. I think that songs like 'Valley of the Dolls' or 'The Sorceress' or perhaps 'Traveler in Time' or 'Soldier Boy' - which are songs that I love - would not fit into the dynamics of the songs included in the setlist. Consummate professionals, Fates Warning performed extremely well live, managing to nicely balance the complexity of their music and the concentration such music obviously requires from the musician with their contact with the audience, and they reminded us all what a totally great live band they are. For my money, theirs was one of th best progressive metal concerts I've attended in a long time.

I think that it's in its place to comment on the audience turnout. Fates Warning have been away for many years, and Denmark is sadly not a big progressive metal country. Granted, we have excellent acts like Third Eye, Pyramaze, Royal Hunt, and, of course, Anubis Gate, but these bands are more well known internationally than in their native country. Moreover, the concert was not really that well advertised. All these factors, I think, play a role in relation to the turnout. Firstly, the eight or nine years that Fates Warning were away from the limelights is a very long time in the world of popular music. I mean an entire generation of rock fans have gone from childhood to adolescence, and chances are that, while they may know Dream Theater and a number of newer progressive metal and djent bands, they may never have heard of Fates Warning. The band seemed very aware of that, and Alder thanked people for sticking around as fans despite Fates Warning's long period of absence. Secondly, given that Denmark is sadly more of a mainstream pop country than our fellow Scandinavian countries, there just is not a huge audience for progressive metal. Bands like Dream Theater and Opeth typically draw relatively large audiences, but they have not been inactive for eight years and are more well known among Danish rock fans. It is also my impression that Danish rock fans do not go to concerts to check bands out, they go to concerts with bands that they know and like (I think it's probably a reflection of a deeper culture, but let's not pursue that). This obviously will result in a small turnout for a band who has been inactive for eight years and whose show was not aggressively advertised. Still, the people who did show up had a really great time and, I guess that the advantage to there being no casual audience members, everyone who was there was a hardcore fan and fully immersed themselves in Fates Warning's superb performance.

Some (lousy) pics:

power-prog with the incorporation of growled vocals. Overall, they aren't the type of metal band I'm into, but they
were a solid start to the evening. They
had those uber-metal song titles like "Web of Lies" "Age of

got a more central view of the stage normally for better sound (Jim Matheos was
often notably quieter than Mike), but I took the opportunity to get close to
the action. This was partly as nobody
usually moshes to Fates Warning (except for one drunk fellow trying to stir one
up), and I got all my moshing out of my system in my teen years.

have no complaints. I didn't hear too
many notable errors or anything. Ray
Alder spoke fondly of the crowd despite the low turnout (I'd guess around 120 people
were there), and made cracks about how cold it was outside. He also kindly reminded us that they
recorded the Parallels album in Toronto.
The whole band played great, and Mike Abdow was a great fill-in choice
for them. He fit right in image-wise and
plays Frank Aresti's lead wonderfully.

Copenhell 2012 - Day 2

Live performance review by Time Signature — And so it came to be, the second day of Copenhagen's biggest metal festival Copenhell had arrived. Like day one, it was full of strong performances from both iconic metal artists and upcoming metal artists. The weather remained tolerable and the sun was shining most of the afternoon, while the clouds did turn grey in the late afternoon. Of course, I didn't catch all of the acts, but I got to see the bands I wanted to see.

Redwood Hill:
Danish post-black metal performed buy guys clad in hooded black ropes. I didn't catch this show, but I can imagine that it was entertaining.

Saxon:
This legendary NWoBHM-band played alrady at 14:30 in the afternoon which is ridiculously early for such a band (they did have some ironic comments about that as part of their stage banter, and the audience was of course more than sympathetic). And, bey, did Saxon rock hard. It might have been at 14:30 in the afternoon in 2012, but they rocked like it was 21:00 in 1985, and their no-nonsense straight up classic metal went straight into the hearts of the audience, who loved every second of the Saxon gig. Saxon proved that you can never get to old to rock and that they can still take on younger and more aggressive and brutal bands and come put victorious. For my money, the Saxon show was one of the highlights of the day.

Dying Fetus:
The legendary brutal death metal trio - although not the most interesting act to watch on stage - showed that they are definitely very good live band when it comes to musical performance. The sheer brutality of the riffage was enough to send the crowd into a state of moshing rage, and the precision with which they performed their set was also quite incredible. They did have a couple of extended breaks in which they tuned their instruments, and - while this is a reflection of professional perfectionism - they also lost the connection with the audience, and I spotted several people walking out on the act in every one of these gaps of silence. Then again, the hardcore Dying Fetus fans stuck around and loved every second of the entire gig.

Cerekloth:
Old school death metal from Denmark. I missed this act because they played at the same time as Dying Fetus - not a smart move from the organizers to have two death metal bands play at the same time.

Meshuggah:
The kings of djent graced Copenhell with their presence and drew a big crowd who were not disappointed with the Swedish tech metallers' performance. They played so incredibly loud and so incredibly well that even people who are not really fans of the band - such as myself - could do nothing but admire the band for their professionalism.

The Kandidate:
The Kandidate went on stage at the same time as Korpiklaani, but still drew a quite big crowd. With the d-beat filled crossover death-thrash, their music and performance had just the right amount of energy to make the crowd throw devil horns and bang their heads. The Kandidate simply delivered a raw and rocking performance, and did a very good job of it.

Korpiklaani:
I managed to catch a couple of songs from the Korpuklaani set. With their polka-based folk metal and songs about beer and tequila, their aim was to create a positive and lighthearted atmosphere. They seemed to be successful in their quest, as the audience generally seemed happy, doing pseudo-folk dance steps and singing along.

Immortal:
The sons of Northern darkness delivered a hell of a show complete with misty smoke screens and darkly epic stage visuals, and a massive wall of Marshall cabinets. They stayed in character throughout the show, with Apollyon glaring threateningly at the audience, and Abbath doing his warrior-like facial expressions and delivering chaotic guitar solos and harsh black metal vocals, while Horgh blasted away behind his drum kit. Immortal delivered the goods!

Saturated, I decided to leave before time, and did not see Trivium, Lamb of God, Soulfly and Marilyn Manson. I had already seen Lamb of God live before and I was never a big fan of the three other bands. With Saxon, The Kandidate, and Immortal, I'd really gotten what I came for, so I decided to go home and have some quality time with a deep pan pizza and my significant other. Some might consider that a failure, but i got what I came for at Copenhell 2012 and did not need to see the four last acts. I've heard that especially Lamb of God and Marilyn Manson were very good, so I am sure that they left their fans happy.

Copenhell 2012 - Day 1

Live performance review by Time Signature —
Copenhell is Copenhagen's biggest annual metal festival (and also a very recent one, this year is only the third year). Compared to last years shit foot, the food served at the festival this year is actually very good, ranging from grill burgers and hot dogs over Thai food to crepes. Also, there is a generally positive atmosphere, which really improves the experience a lot - even to asocial assholes like me. Yesterday was day one, and featured, for my money, the strongest roster yet in the short history of the festival. Of course, I did not get to see all the bands who performed, but I saw the ones I wanted, and I was positively impressed by all of them:

Barricade:
A Danish sludge metal band with two drummers, Barricade, as far as I remember, actually won some kind of competition where the prize was that they got to open the festival. Anyway, their music was sludgy and punky, and they managed to make it sound really massive on stage, pretty much blowing the audience away. Although not my cup of tea, I must say that they are a great live band and definitely a very appropriate act to kick off the fist day.

Skeletonwitch:
The American black-thrash act proved, once again, what a great live band they are. Blending old school thrash with black metal and adding a dose of melodic speed metal, they capture a lot of the things that I like about metal, and, at Copenhell they showed that their brand of metal is just as compelling live as it is on CD. I also liked how they seemed to have a good time on stage, and connected with the audience. They did a very, very good job, indeed.

The Rising:
Unfortunately I missed these guys because they played at the same time as Skeletonwitch - I hope that in the future, the organizers of Copenhell will refrain from having acts on the Pandæmonium - which is 100% dedicated to Danish metal - collide with acts from the Helviti and Hades stages.

Killswitch Engage:
Probably the biggest metalcore act ever graced the Helviti stage with their presence. With their original Jesse Leach vocalist back in the fold, they were out to prove that they could rock as hard with him in front as with Howard Jones in front. And rock hard they did. Whether you like their brand of melodic metalcore or not, there is no denying that they are an awesome live band who are very active on stage, and personally I have no problems with Adam Dutkiewicz clownish stage antics - nothing wrong with a bit of humor.

Brutal Truth:
Having visitid Christiania prior to the gig, the grindcore quartet were pretty much stoned off their ass, and having guzzled down a case of beer in no time, they were also drunk off their ass - but that didn't stop them from begging the audience for weed and beers. Under normal circumstances, this is typically considered lame and unprofessional, but, with a band like Brutal Truth, it is forgivable... actually it is part of the whole experience, and the audience played along 100%. Their set was chaotic and noisy, and they did what they do best: unleashing chaotic brutality upon the crowd, who loved every single bit of it. In fact, the band seemed to have such a great time on stage that they totally lost track of time. Brutal Truth delivered a grindcore show which was the way a grindcore show should be: intense and chaotic.

The Interbeing:
The Interbeing played at the same time as Brutal Truth. I went to check them out in the middle of the Brutal Truth set, but I decided to go back to Brutal Truth after a few minutes. Not that there is anything band)wrong with The Interbeing's brand of melodeath-informed industrial metal (actually, The Interbeing is a very good. It was just that the Brutal Truth show had left me in a frame of mind that was incompatible with the aesthetics of The Interbeing's more polished and organized music. Again, the Copenhell organizers should consider a way to not have bands from the Pandæmonium stage collide with bands from the two other stages.

Anthrax:
The highlight of the day. What a great live band! And what a great front man Joey Belladonna is. Their set featured a few tracks from the new album, but otherwise consisted mostly of classics, including their famous cover versions of 'Got the Time' and 'Anti-Social' plus a cover version of 'Neon Knights' (or was it 'Die Young'). As expected, they were very active on stage and connected 100% with the audience.

All Shall Perish:
Not really a band that I follow or anything, but they strike me as being a good live band, and they showed that, if performed well, metalcore-style breakdowns and grooves can be really awesome and powerful live. Still, I am not going to rush out and buy their albums (the frantically screamed vocals are not my thing either, I must say)

Mastodon:
Having had to cancel their gig at Copenhell 2010, Mastodon had to deliver double plus this time around. And they did. Their performance was solid, and especially the tracks from the first three albums came across very well. They didn't really connect with the audience, but I don't think that's their style anyway. Their performance was top ace though.

Gojira:
This is one of the bands I never had the opportunity to explore, so I had actually never heard them before. Their live performance was incredibly tight - probably the most tight and professional performance I've seen in a long time. One thing that was interesting was that, since there is only very little melody to their music, what resonated with the audience were grooves, rhythms and syncopations. I have to say that, in order to pull that off, you have to be a very accomplished musician. I might explore this band some time in the future, but, despite my admiration of them as musicians and live performers, I was not completely sold on the music itself. Not a critique, just a matter of my taste in music.

Slayer:
Slayer seemed tired, but their music is so full of energy and aggression that, despite the absence of virtually any activity, apart from Kerry King and guest guitarist Gary Holt doing some headbanging every now and then, the concert was still a very positive experience. This is actually meant as a complement to Slayer's music - the songs are so powerful and full of aggressive energy that they can stand on their own. They do not need any stage show or any sort of stage antics to be made interesting. The sound swas also pretty phenomenal - they've managed to capture that unique Slayer sound on stage.

So today is the second day, and I actually don't know what to go and see. Saxon is the only name that I am really interested in seeing, and perhaps immortal and The Kandidate.

Gallery

DREAM THEATER - live in Jakarta [Apr 21st, 2012]

Live performance review by Stephen — DREAM THEATER - A Dramatic Tour of Events : Live in Jakarta
April 21st, 2012 at Mata Elang Indoor Stadium

So the buzz about Dream Theater finally make it to Jakarta was quite loud since last year, but I'm being skeptical about it since beside the fee must be too high for the organizers here, the plan to invite them about 3 years ago was cancelled. But then it's quite surprising to see that the event is real and the ticket price is insanely high ($100-$150) but the crowd eat em all and probably around 10.000 people showed up that night, so that must be one of the most successful moment for Dream Theater themselves I guess.

The show is spectacular in terms of lighting and sound. All the details are comin' out, and to see how Petrucci and Rudess performed at their highest level are simply stunning. The instrumental wizardry from all rhythm section is applauding, kudos also to Mangini for his splendid 15 minutes solo drum. The setlist is carefully picked and very balance, but if only I can pick, I think 6 new songs is quite overwhelming. Probably 'Bridges' and 'Build' can be switched with 'Metropolis' and 'Fatal Tragedy', and since I don't really like 6DOiT, I think if they go with 'Caught In A Web' and 'Peruvian Skies', sounds like an even stronger list, but overall it's quite satisfying, especially on the acoustical interlude of 'The Silent Man / Beneath The Surface', pure magical. The lengthy duel intro of Petrucci / Rudess at 'The Spirit Carries On' is also dropping many jaws, beautiful!

Overall, after the encore of 'Pull Me Under', the crowd didn't want to leave and expect one more surprising song, I can hear many chant 'Metropolis', but perhaps they didn't rehearse that song and it's quite tiring after 2.5 hours of show. Excellent show and you don't want to miss this band if they're in town :)

Setlist :
1. Dream Is Collapsing (Hans Zimmer song)
2. Bridges in the Sky (ADToE #5)
3. 6:00 (Awake #1)
4. Build Me Up, Break Me Down (ADToE #2)
5. Surrounded (I&W #4)
6. The Root of All Evil (Octavarium #1)
7. Drum Solo
8. A Fortune in Lies (WDaDU #1)
9. Outcry (ADToE #6)
10.
Obscura+Spawn Of Possession+Gorod+Exivious

Live performance review by UMUR —

Temple of Doom: Obscura (d) + Spawn Of Possession (s) + Gorod (fr) + Exivious (hol)

15th of March, Templet, Lyngby, Denmark.

EXIVIOUS (http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/exivious.aspx?ac=exivi):
The Dutch technical/progressive fusion metal act EXIVIOUS started the evening. The band self-released their self-titled debut full-length studio album in 2009. Guitarist Tymon Kruidenier is also known for playing on CYNIC´s comeback album "Traced in Air (2008)" and bassist Robin Zielhorst for playing live with CYNIC on the subsequent tour replacing Sean Malone.

The band entered the stage with a nice relaxed attitude and played their incredibly challenging progressive fusion metal with what seemed like ease. The songs were more energetic in a live setting that they are on the more calm album versions, which worked really well for the band. A great performance from what seemed to be a very sympathetic band.

GOROD (http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/gorod.aspx?ac=gorod):
French technical death metal act GOROD entered the stage as the second act this night. GOROD were formed in 1997 under the GORGASM monicker, but to avoid confusion with the US act of the same name they changed their name to GOROD in 2005 and have currently released 4 full-length studio albums under this monicker. The latest being "A Perfect Absolution" from March 2012.

After a couple of minor sound rehearsals, which seemed a bit odd at that point, GOROD started their show. Great energy, tight musicianship and again a band that seemed to have a good time on stage (I swear the bassist was smiling throughout the whole concert). After the more nerdy fusion metal of EXIVIOUS, it was nice to have your head bashed in by some really brutal and technical death metal music.

SPAWN OF POSSESSION (http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/spawn-of-possession.aspx?ac=spawn):
After a short break Swedish technical death metal act SPAWN OF POSSESSION took the stage. The band have released 3 highly technical death metal albums in "Cabinet (2003)", the much praised "Noctambulant (2006)" and this years "Incurso" and are widely considered as one of the Swedish leaders of this particular death metal sub-genre.

SPAWN OF POSSESSION are sligthly more old school than GOROD and my initial assumption that the two acts would sound very similar in a live setting was put to shame. The live sound was a bit more muddy than had been the case with the clear and very good sound during EXIVIOUS and GOROD, but I was still able to hear what was going on. The band were well playing and their music worked well in a live setting. Great energy.

OBSCURA (http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/obscura.aspx?ac=obscur):
Germam technical/progressive death metal act OBSCURA have been on quite a successful ride after they released their 2nd full-length studio album "Cosmogenesis" in 2009. An album that made quite an impact on the technical/progressive death metal scene. The release of "Omnivium" in 2011 have only further strengthened OBSCURA´s position as one of the most successful acts on the technical/progressive death metal scene.

It didn´t take long after SPAWN OF POSSESSION left the stage before OBSCURA, who was headliner this night, entered the stage to play their show. The band were obviously very well playing and delivered their songs with great conviction, but unfortunately the soundman fucked up the sound to a degree where the sound at times was downright painful to the ears. The sound was terribly distorted because he had turned up the volume way too much. Midways through the show he mananged to control the sound to a degree where it was actually pretty good, but towards the end he screwed up again and everything ended in a distorted mess. I don´t blame the band who did their best and seemed like nice guys with a great contact to the audience (and a really nice German accent that reminded me of Mille from KREATOR), but I´d fire that soundman (or at least give him a kick in the ass or a couple of new ears). I was standing right next to the mixing pult, so he must have heard exactly the same sound as I did, and he didn´t do enough to fix the problem IMO.

...all in all it was a pretty great evening, that unfortunately ended on somewhat of a low. EXIVIOUS was probably the most interesting act and GOROD and SPAWN OF POSSESSION also delivered great shows, so I guess it was one of those rare evenings where the support acts steal the show. I´m just sorry for OBSCURA because it wasn´t their fault.

(the pics are not from the actual show. If anyone own the rights to the pics and wants them removed, please PM me)

Show Review: Iced Earth & Symphony X

Live performance review by Conor Fynes —

Especially when it comes to the bravado-filled world of American power metal, there is no better place to experience the music than in a live setting, although that can probably be said for just about any style. Regardless, adrenaline-fuelled excitement was heavy at the Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver, on Valentine's Day. Not because anyone was looking particularly forward to an expensive restaurant bill or cheesy card exchanges; no, this Valentine's Day, the excitement was built around the arrival of Symphony X and Iced Earth, and getting to experience two of the best American metal bands with a bunch of other sweaty metalheads.

After a decent, but unremarkable opening performance in Warbringer, Iced Earth takes the stage. The lights go out, and tensions are high. As expected, the band sticks to songs from their newest album Dystopia, and while the band most eagerly anticipates the classic songs, there is just as great a force to the new offerings.

In the weeks following up to the show, the biggest question in my mind was in regards to the new singer, Stu Block, and his replacement of the most canonical Iced Earth vocalist, Matt Barlow. Although I was already well aware of his talent and range through Into Eternity, his vocal style there did not seem to fit Iced Earth, but I was pleasantly amazed by how Stu was able to tweak his style to fit the band. Although certainly distinguishable from each other, Stu Block sounds plenty like Barlow, and there was no disappointment. Although Barlow does have a stronger 'mid range' to his voice, Block easily competes with some insane falsettos that are bound to give concertgoers chills.

Iced Earth's performance was very strong, with 'Damien' being my arguable highlight of their set. A single ballad track the band plays towards the dusk of their set felt a bit out of place and even formulaic to the 'power ballad' structure, and I found that while Iced Earth did not have a great variety to the music they played during the night, most of the songs were distinguishable and memorable unto their own.

Despite a longer-than-desirable intermission, Symphony X came on to massive cheers, and even those viewers who came to see Iced Earth seemed brought into the excitement by the end of Symphony X's first song. Michael Romeo absolutely amazed with his guitar work, and although I have rarely been a fan of Russell Allen's voice on record, he changed my impression seeing him perform live.

Like Iced Earth, they played mostly material from their new album 'Iconoclast' (as well as the preceding work 'Paradise Lost'). However, unlike Iced Earth, I felt a little disappointed by this move. Although Symphony X's more to-the-point recent style was very exciting for the first few songs, I did feel a sense of deja vu by the fourth and fifth. Symphony X played only a smattering of their more technical, 'progressive' riffs, and for what little I heard of that side, I was blown away. I can't say it happens much, but I ultimately felt both impressed and disappointed with Symphony X's performance. Although they sported excellent musicianship and showmanship, I was left wanting to hear even one more of their more classic tunes. The eruption of cheers that ensued when 'Inferno' started playing makes me think I am not the only one who wanted this.

Regardless, a great show from both acts. A very memorable night!

Photos taken by Kevin Zecchel

Commodore Ballroom Feb 14th, Vancouver BC 2012

Cynic/Chimp Spanner, 18th of Dec. 2011, Templet, L

Live performance review by UMUR —

Cynic/Chimp Spanner, 18th of Dec. 2011, Templet, Lyngby, DK

So what´s better than a visit from the warm Florida on a freezing cold winter night in Denmark? Tech/progressive metal act CYNIC had announced that they were coming to town (my home town no less) a few months back and of course I purchased tickets as fast as I could. Having been a fan of the band since the early nineties I was not gonna miss this opportunity to see them live. I never got the chance to see CYNIC when they toured in support of "Focus (1993)", so I´ve been waiting 18 years to see them. CYNIC brought UK tech/progressive fusion metal act CHIMP SPANNER with them as support. Templet in Lyngby (which is a suburb to Copenhagen), is a very small venue with room for about 150 people. The concert was sold out though, so the pretty small room was filled to the brim.

CHIMP SPANNER was the first band on stage. I had only heard about them and haven´t listened to their music before seeing them live but even though they play a very technical form of instrumental fusion metal the music wasn´t too inaccessible and they delivered a tight and convincing show. Lots of jazzy soloing and odd time signatures. A bit more showmanship to go along with the virtuosic noodling would have made the show perfect. The drummer was pretty active but the two guitarists and the bassist were pretty static.

After a short break CYNIC entered the stage to the tones of "Amidst the Coals" and went right into "Carbon-Based Anatomy", which are the two opening tracks on the "Carbon-Based Anatomy (2011)" EP. Already at this point I could hear that there was something special in store for us this night. The song selection for the night spanned all the group´s releases and while the set was focused predominantly on post 2008 material it worked well when the band incorporated older more energetic tracks like "How Could I" and "Veil of Maya" into the set. The peak of the evening for me was probably when they played "King of Those Who Know". Not only is it an incredibly challenging song, but also a beautiful ditto. The two new (touring?) members Brandon Giffin on bass and Max Phelps on guitar, raw vocals did a great job and seamlessly complimented Paul Masvidal (guitar, clean vocals) and Sean Reinert (drums).

All in all a great night. Oh...and I forgot to mention that the sound quality was excellent.

(The pictures are not from the actual show.
MELVINS live, Lille VEGA, Copenhagen, DK, 17th oct

Live performance review by UMUR —

MELVINS live, Lille VEGA, Copenhagen, Denmark, 17th of Oct. 2011

While MELVINS is a band I´ve always heard nice things about it´s not until recently that I´ve begun to check out their music, so before going to this concert I was only familiar with the 3 last albums out of an (at the moment) 18 studio album discography. I took a friend to the concert who had only listened to a few samples, so it´s safe to say we didn´t quite know what to expect.

After a DJ had warmed up people for about and hour and a half (there was no supporting act), the lights were dimmed and MELVINS entered the stage, starting the concert with an inferno of feedback noise and random drumming courtesy of their two drummers. Then they went into the first track which was a repetitive and extremely heavy track. To be honest the track felt a bit too repetitive and we got slightly worried at this point. We made our way to the front of the stage after the first couple of tracks (which wasn´t hard as the venue can only hold about 400 - 500 people. It was sold out though) and that´s when the experience of seing the MELVINS became extremely intense. After a while we simply couldn´t help ourselves and we banged our heads like madmen. My goodness MELVINS are heavier beyond heavy in a live setting. I don´t think I´ve ever experienced a more bone crushingly heavy band live. Even their more energetic punked up-tempo tracks are heavy as fuck.

The setlist consisted of quite a few tracks from the last three albums and especially "(A) Senile Animal (2006)" and the latest album release "The Bride Screamed Murder (2010)" were well represented. It didn´t bother me of course as those are the albums I´ve heard, but it was actually amazing how easy it was to understand and appreciate the tracks I didn´t know beforehand. MELVINS tracks are damn catchy and downright infectious and that had a contagious effect on the audience, who halfway through the concert started moshing (a single girl stagedived but was politely asked to remove her ass from the stage by a security guard). The mosh was actually so energetic that I missed parts of the JARED WARREN led track "A History of Bad Men", which is a favorite of mine, but who cares? I just like to see happy people go bezerk to music they love. The concert also included a shared drum solo and a quite bizarre and stoned ending to the night with JARED WARREN lying on his knees chanting into a microphone while electronically manipulating his bass for about 10 minutes. A bit unnecessary if you ask me, but because the rest of the concert was as great as it was we decided to forgive this odd way of ending the concert.

The musicianship is absolutely amazing in this band and deserves a mention too. The two drummers DALE CROVER and COADY WILLIS compliment each other very well playing little details all the time but they can also provide some heavy beats and as a consequence of having two drummers those beats come off as crushingly heavy. The vocals were also really strong this night allthough they were slightly low in the soundscape. The distorted bass playing by JARED WARREN bring a lot of heaviness to the music too.

The stage sound was really good this night. Raw and loud but without drowning the instruments in noise. The guitar tone of guitarist/lead vocalist KING BUZZO was particularly organic and his playing loose yet tight.

So it´s safe to say we had a very positive surprise seing MELVINS, and we both agreed that we would most definitely go see them when they come around these parts again. As my friend stated: "They opened my eyes to the fact that there are still original artists out there". I guess praise don´t come better than that.

The setlist was as follows:

1. Hung Bunny
2. Roman Dog Bird
3. The Water Glass
4. Evil New War God
5. AMAZON
6. The Talking Horse
7. It’s Shoved
8. Lizzy
9. The Kicking Machine
10. Billy Fish
11. It Won’t Be Long (The Beatles)
12. Electric Flower
13. Queen
14. At the Stake
15. Copache
16. Spread Eagle Beagle
17. A History of Bad Men
18. Ligature
19. The Bit
20. Shevil

MELVINS MMA artist page: http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/melvins.aspx?ac=melvins

(I don´t own the rights to the pictures, so if anyone wants them removed, please PM me)

Alice Cooper - 7 Oct 2011, Jakarta

Live performance review by Stephen — ALICE COOPER - No More Mr.Nice Guy Tour
Live at eX Park, Jakarta, Oct 7th 2011

Resized to 98% (was 720 x 540) - Click image to enlarge

Last Friday, the shock rock icon visited Jakarta for a quick stop before
going to Europe. I went to the gig, cruising down a hell of a traffic
because the venue is a bit unusual, they held it right in the middle of a
hectic business district where Hard Rock Cafe is situated, but fast
forward, the show is on very late, probably around 11PM and finished in 2
hours, but it's completely a major satisfaction. Alice is such a true
entertainer, I must admit I'm not familiar with many songs from his
classic days because I only dig his commercial era (Trash, Stoopid,
etc), but luckily, he played many hits like 'I'm Eighteen', 'No More
Mr.Nice Guy', and 'Only Women Bleed', so I can sing along with the older
guys there lol

Resized to 98% (was 720 x 540) - Click image to enlarge

Unfortunately, the ticket price was very high (up to $70-$80) and lack
of promotion, hence the crowd is too small for veteran like this
(perhaps only 1.000). Don't know what the promotor has been doing, but
Alice should have gathered at least 4,000 crowd with a reasonable ticket
price. Lucky for me, I snapped a cheap presale ticket around $30 and got to watch a very
memorable concert. His vocal is quite okay, his movement is limited but
he got my high respect for a star performing stunts like this at his
60s. He brought many interesting things to the stage, from the spider
costume, to the woman dolls, from guillotine to the Frankenstein
monster.

Dream Theater-Seattle 9/27/2011

Live performance review by Catcher10 —
Seattle is not a top city stop for most progressive rock, metal or heavy prog acts......LA absolutely, and I think San Fran gets the nod over Seattle. Dream Theater was last here in June 2010 opening for Iron Maiden, not really a tour and I think their last tour appearance was in 2004 for the Prog Nation show, Seattle was passed over on their BC&SL Tour...........I think that might have changed, at least in the minds of Dream Theater this past Tuesday night Sept 27, 2011......In short we got treated to a Prog Metal blitkrieg!!

Seattle I am proud of you! You absolutely brough the house down, it was complete mayhem during the entire show. Young, old, male, female did a tremendous job of showing DT that we were glad they included Seattle on this tour.

The venue, historic...The Moore Theater is just a wonderful venue, 100yr old building with tremendous character and a huge music history too, mainly early grunge. We have all seen the Pearl Jam MTV video where Vedder dives into the audience from a balcony ledge, filmed at The Moore, as well as many other artists which have filmed there.

I have seen some youtube vids of the LA and San Fran shows of the intro video and opening song, Bridges In the Sky, Seattle crowd was soooo friggin loud that we could hardly hear the Shaman trance, that song was very close to the highlight for me of the night, it plays very well live. And before I go further, we got the first setlist (or San Fran set) which did not include Breaking All Illusions. Here it is:

<DIV id=msg_1075214 ="inner">1. Bridges in the Sky
2. These Walls
3. Build Me Up, Break Me Down
4. Endless Sacrifice
5. Drum Solo
6. Ytse Jam
7. The Silent Man [Acoustic]
8. Beneath the Surface [Acoustic]
9. The Great Debate
10. On the Backs of Angels
11. Forsaken
12. Through My Words
13. Fatal Tragedy
14. Outcry
Encore
15. Under a Glass Moon

<DIV ="inner">

<DIV ="inner">I will not detail the songs but for me I was perfectly happy with this set, I much prefer to hear Under A Glass Moon as encore rather than Pull Me Under, which has been played live a gazillion times.

Build Me Up, Break Me Down was awesome, and getting to hear Endless Sacrifice was a treat for sure, crowd went nuts on that song.

Mike Mangini played very, very well. He hit everything spot on, I don't think he had any hiccups the whole night. His drum solo was actually entertaining. Most metal drum solos are a bore, generally just a bunch of tom rolls and dbl bass rolls and hitting cymbals with all their might.....no finesse playing at all. Mangini is definitely fast but it was good. You could tell he was having a great time, infectious smile the whole time, and at one point LaBrie "introduced" Mike Mangini and the crowd really gave him a rousing welcome, LaBrie had to give an extra few seconds as he could not go on till the crowd calmed down......That was good to see for Mike.

John Petrucci was on fire, as expected! What I saw though was his complete crowd approval and he appreciated the response we were giving him, many, many nods of crowd approval by him.

James LaBrie was in top form, vocally very good especially on the acoustic portion of the show. I will say one of the negatives was the soundmix guy was not good, many times during the show we could not hear James's singing, mic was too low, drowned out by guitar and also too much "boom-boom" from Mike's drums. But most of the time James sounded very good. He taunted the audience the whole show and again we responded with passion, all the sing alongs were hit spot on.......he was even comfortable enough to play with Petrucci's nipple, giving him a pinch (photo below).

Myung......a bass playing beast!! I just wish he would play more with his head up so we can see more expression from him, besides it was difficult for my wife to get pics of him...but she managed to get some.

Rudess was another one that was hard to hear a lot of the time due to the soundmix, shame as it would have been nice to hear him more, but what we did hear was normal great playing by him. He and Mangini fed off each other all night, but I also think part of it was Rudess making sure Mangini was playing in time with the rest, especially on Portnoy songs. I saw a lot of that during Endless Sacrifice and Under A Glass Moon.

The stage set was decent, it could have been better. The 3 cube screens was a nice touch but the actual live video feed was pretty amature'ish looking. Now I may be very biased here as for example the Rush Time Machine screen was basically a huge HD monitor and showed tremendous detail. These cube screens were fine but the feed resolution looked like a 1980's live feed, no color.

Mangini's drum kit is well....too big. Also seems like it is not ergonomically good for a drummer that will play for 2 hours. His octobans are above his head and a lot of his cymbals are very high up, making him have to reach a lot and I have to figure that after 2 hours his arms must completely be numb from the shoulders down......and to have to do this for a whole tour for 3 months? Ughhh....

The acoustic set was refreshing, nice add in. The Great Debate and Fatal Tragedy were also highlights for me and the crowd.

At the end you could see DT were pleased with the set, we actually saw Myung smile.....and Mangini was blown away by the crowd response, I don't think he realized how loud we were sitting behind his kit with the ear monitors in.

My wife did the normal and took a ton of pics, amazing job she did. She had one fan ask her for her contact info as he wants some of her pics....I guess she is becoming famous as my prog rock photographer!

Myself, my wife and two of my sons (12 and 16) had an amazing time. We were as close to the stage as we could get without having to buy VIP tickets, so we did good!

Here are some pics......Enjoy

Iron Maiden - The Final Frontier World Tour 2011

Live performance review by Stephen — Iron Maiden performed for the very first time in Indonesia last night,
and it's a fantastic show. The highlight of their show is of course the
energy, looks like they never aging, and to see Bruce keep jumping and
leaping from the left stage to the right without losing the consistency
of his strong voice, and to keep communicating with the audience, is
simply awesome. Steve Harris also very active, running around the stage
with his bass, Janick Gers is also fun to watch, he kept performing some
girly dance lol, acrobatic guitar move, and nice solos. Basically, the
whole show is superb, but from the setlist, since they're performing a
lot from their new album, many people here aren't that familiar, and I
think the first two tracks of the album are among their weakest, shame
classic like Hills, Wasted Years, or Madness aren't there.

Invocator, Raunchy & The Burning (11/9-2010)

Live performance review by Time Signature — On the ninth of September 2010, The Headbanger's Ball Tour hit Lille Vega in Copenhagen, this year featuring The Burning, Raunchy and Invocator.

Being a big Invocator fan, and not having seen them perform live since some time back in the 90s, when they served as support act for Paradise Lost at a show in Odense, I decided to go to the Headbanger's Ball Tour show in Vega to check them out. Admittedly, I was not very interested in neither The Burning nor Raunchy (truth be told, I hadn't heard Raunchy before and I'd never even heard about The Burning.

I arrived half an hour after the show had started, so I managed to catch half of The Burning's show. Their style was a heavy and groovy, yet thrash- and metalcore-inspired type of metal music, and their stage presence was fittingly intense - and at times it reminded me of a hybrid between Grope's early groove metal style and The Psyke Project's heavy and sludgy metalcore style. As a bonus, Søren Nico Adamsen from Artillery had a guest appearance on one of The Burning's tracks, being heralded by The Burning's Johnny Haven as the best smelling man in metal. After The Burning's intense performance, Raunchy, billed as co-headliners, to to the stage, which just about offered enough room for their six-man line-up. Raunchy's modern melodic metalcore style obviously appealed a lot to the younger generation of metalheads, and the place was jam packed while they delivered their professional and also sympathetic, as the band members, without hesitation, handed water out to the dehydrated teenagers up front. Being old school, I kind of lost interest in Raunchy's show (Raunchy's style belongs to the same genre of metal as Dead By April and Sonic Syndicate, but Raunchy are much more true to their rock and metal roots (and much better!), retaining a lot of heaviness and aggression in their otherwise melodic music) halfway through the show, so I decided to go downstairs and buy some Invocator merchandise.

With all due respect, The Burning and Raunchy are very good live bands and good musicians, and they delivered hell of a show - even I, who do not really like the sort of music they play, can see that - but when Invocator took to the stage, the crowd experienced much higher level of intensity, technicality and musicianship. Invocator's music is much heavier and much more complex than Raunchy's and The Burning's style, and their stage presence, while extremely laid back, was much more energetic and intense. A lot of the younger audience, who are more into Raunchy's and The Burning's modern styles of metal, left during Invocator's show, leaving behind a more mature audience, diminished in size but with increased appreciation of what was going on onstage. With Perle back in the band, most of the set consisted of tracks from the legendary "Weave the Apocalypse" and "Living to Die", all of which hit the jackpot with the crowd; there is just something unique about their music and about actually witnessing such technical, yet groovy (Invocator were one of the first Danish metal bands to incorporate groove into their thrash metal music, probably inspired by Pantera), metal being performed live. The band performed the title track off "Through the Flesh to the Soul" with a guest appearance by Flemming C. Lund (former member, now in Raunchy) on guitars, and as part of their encore, they played "the title track of "Excursion Demise" with a guest performance by former guitarist Jacob Schulz, whose shreddy solos were in an interesting contrast with Perle's much more technical and rock-inspired solos.

In all, a good show with something for both the kids and the old school metalheads of my generation. Invocator's performance was exceptional. The show was apparently also an important wvent in the Copenhagen metal milieu, as I spotted members of several established metal acts in the audience, including one of the Stützer brothers and, I think, one of the members of Pretty Maids.

See more photos on Jacob Schulz's Facebook profile here.

Scorpions 2010 Ridgefield, WA

Live performance review by Catcher10 — Well I am back from vacation, great trip just the wife and I!!! We saw two shows, Scorpions on Aug 7th and Rush Aug 9th in San Francisco.

This was my 6th Scorpions show, of course the most memorable will always be US Festival '83 in San Bernardino, CA. US Festival also seems to be a special day for the Scorpions as they continue to show footage and discuss this show as a highlight of their career.

Dokken opened for Scorpions.....I own only Breaking the Chains and am familiar with other songs Dokken did. For sure Don Dokken is old!!! His voice is so much better when he sings in the more mellow mode than when he tries to sing like Vince Neil. He looks and sounds like an old rusty Harley dude trying to sing screamo...it did not work...Don, stick to your mellow mode and its much better.

Scorpions came on about 9:30pm and played for almost 2 hours. The stage was decent, huge screen in background showing old concert clips, live shots...but the screen was like an old TV set...grainy, unless you are straight in front its difficult to see the image clearly.

Klaus, Rudolf and Matthias all looked great! Certainly not like back in the 80's when they used to run all over the stage...Rudolf pretty much walked back and forth, occasionally "jogged".....Klaus's voice sounded great, Matthias as usual hit all the lead guitar points very well. Pawel is a decent bass player, I prefer Francis Buchholz though...he was better. Although Pawel did throw my wife a few pics..!! James Kottak is a very good rock drummer, did justice to Herman Rarebell's playing.

The setlist is very good.....A lot of Loverdrive, Blackout and Love At First Sting material......I was soooo glad they are playing The Zoo live, such a great song. The new songs are excellent Sting In the Tail (opener) was awesome...one of the highlights was "The Best Is Yet to Come".........Klaus got the crowd into that one very well.

"Blackout" brought out Rudolf wearing a mask of the album cover and his smoking guitar, literally had smoke coming out the back...it was cool.

They finished with "No One Like You" and "Rock You Like A Hurricane"

If this is truely their Farewell Tour then I would have liked more older songs..."Speedys Coming", "Robot Man", "Steamrock Fever"...... would have been nice to hear those classics.

They put on a great show for sure...high energy (for their age) musically very accurate. I've been a Scorpions fan since Animal Magnetism and have all their albums up to Face the Heat and the last two...so I am missing a couple...Not seeing Klaus and the boys live anymore is pretty much a bummer for sure, so if you can go see this tour......Its one not to miss.

Here are some pics my wife took.....

Tuska Open Air Metal Festival, day one (Ziltoid)

Live performance review by Pekka — Tuska Festival is the biggest Scandinavian metal festival that's been held every year since the late 90s right in the heart of Helsinki, one minute walk away from the central railway station. As the title says it's open air, so everyone living near or walking by has had the chance to hear the beautiful tunes of the likes of Cannibal Corpse and Celtic Frost blasting in the sunny summer evening. The last time I visited was 2002 when Bruce Dickinson headlined Sunday. The main attraction this time around was Mastodon headlining Saturday, but due to Bill Kelliher's health problems they had to cancel their entire European tour, and at the same time I realized, that I'd miss most of the interesting bands on Friday due to work. So no Barren Earth, Testament, Swallow the Sun or Insomnium for me, yay.

A slight compensation came right after I finally made my way into the area, when Barren Earth's guitarist Janne Perttilä came staggering by and drunkenly complimented by Bruce Dickinson Europe 2002 shirt. He was gone before I understood who it was so I didn't have the chance to tell him how much I liked their album, but he probably wouldn't have understood anyway in that state. After meeting up with a bunch of friends, they too in various states of drunkenness, and my fiancée, it was already time for the main event: The world premiere of Devin Townsend's Ziltoid the Omnicient.

After a long series of hilarious opening videos (who or what the hell is Meatball? ) showcasing the unique Devin sense of humour the man with his three man backing band hit the stage. "My name is Devin f**kin Townsend! Let's f**king do this!" This event was the first time ever that he had played any of the Ziltoid stuff live (perhaps excluding Hyperdrive, which is also featured on the DTP album Addicted) and he was clearly excited and enjoying every moment. It was in a way a very faithful reproduction of the album, all the songs were played very much like the recorded versions, with the help of pre-recorded backing tracks, and most of the Ziltoid monologue parts were shown on the video screen. But there was a lot of sweet surprises as well, among which were an Eddie-like visit from Ziltoid himself, a guitar solo and insult duel between Devin and the on-screen Ziltoid (Here's Ziltoid's mighty axe), an intermission with the Ziltoid-Eddie serving coffee and Testament's Chuck Billy appearing as Planet Smasher. I've said it before and I'll say it again, Billy's definitely got one of the most massively powerful metal voices around. Two extra tracks were also played, which I didn't recognize at the moment but later learnt that they were Kingdom from the Physicist album and brilliantly closing the show was Deep Peace from Terria.

I was watching the show a few meters before the mixing booth, and the sound was most of the time very good, but sometimes the backing tracks were drowned under the band, which resulted in a loss of some vital melodies. If I hadn't heard the album it could've felt pretty thin, but luckily I was able to imagine the barely audible parts around the ones I actually heard. Despite this and the eternal curse of all Finnish summer outdoor shows, the sunlight making any light show invisible, it was a hugely enjoyable performance and a very special occasion to be a part of. I think Devin said during the show that it was the first Ziltoid show of many to come, so perhaps you'll get so see it too.

Now it's the second day, the first bands are already playing and I'm still at home. Should leave perhaps...

<p style="MARGIN: 0cm 0cm 10pt" ="msonormal"="">Alice Cooper visited Australia in 2007 and played in Launceston at the Silverdome to a fair sized crowd of a few thousand for the small region. He brought with him the stage show that he is famous for. It was the ‘Psycho Drama Tour 2007’ and the band was indeed a very cool bunch of guys that wore black and played some aggressive metal, revamping all the classic Cooper tracks making them heavier. Cooper’s voice was excellent, and he belted one amazing song after another. The merchandise consisted of his latest CDs at the time, “Brutal Planet” “The Best Of”, “Legends” box set, and “Dragontown” and “Dirty Diamonds” CDs plus the “Beast of Alice Cooper” DVD. But I had them all so was disappointed there were none of the classics there that I did not have. The T Shirts looked cool but atrociously overpriced. There were no tour booklets! – Not a great start.

<p style="MARGIN: 0cm 0cm 10pt" ="msonormal"="">The set list was terrific encompassing all the legendary songs of Cooper’s prolific repertoire. (I wrote them all down when I got home so I would not forget). It began with the killer opening number ‘It’s Hot Tonight’ and the crowd made a bee line for the stage. Rather it was a stampede. I had lousy seats at the back of the hall, and I had to part with $80 to get here so I made an executive decision to join the stampede. I found myself bang in front of the stage on the side but it was an awesome view and I could even see Cooper’s garb consisting of skulls up the pant legs and leather jacket. He looked fantastic and was agile for a man in his 60s prouncing around the stage as if he owned it, and he did.

The crowd sung loudly all the songs they knew. He brought out a crutch in this last song and waved it menacingly at the enthusiastic crowd. I could almost reach out and touch it and we all tried to do that but he cheekily kept pulling it back with a ‘no, no, no’ look in his black mascara eyes. Next song was ‘Be My Lover’, then my fave from “The Last Temptation”, ‘Lost in America’, a classic. ‘Muscle of Love’ and ‘Under My Wheels’ followed to an enthusiastic applause. Then he launched into ‘Feed My Frankenstein’, that we all yelled back at him. I remember in this song him leering out at us and we just pointed our fingers at him and yelled “Feeed MYYYYYYYYY Frankenstein, hungry for blood and it’s feeding time, Woahohoh yeah yeah yeah...” it was a memorable moment.

<p style="MARGIN: 0cm 0cm 10pt" ="msonormal"="">

He was more metal than I remembered him with this band line up. They looked cool too, playing off to the crowd, leaning their guitars out to us who feebly tried to touch them, and they played some great lead breaks. ‘Welcome To My Nightmare’ was next, a bonafide classic and we all knew the lyrics and let him know it. He seemed to enjoy our enthusiasm and played off it even stopping to hear us sing verses. There was a spider web behind him with a large black widow in it and I hoped he would sing ‘Black Widow’, my fave from that album. Alas, Alice did not sing it.

<p style="MARGIN: 0cm 0cm 10pt" ="msonormal"="">

On this song he was suddenly confronted by an angry ballet dancer who danced beautifully in a mesmirising way. He feigned slapping her around and she was sad and he looked sorry – a nice theatrical performance by the two and typical of previous shows I had seen on DVD.

<p style="MARGIN: 0cm 0cm 10pt" ="msonormal"="">Next was the dark part of the set, the songs were a lot darker in lyrics and atmosphere including, ‘I love the Dead’ where he is lead to the guillotine to be beheaded and his head is chopped onto a basket. Weird how he did that but there was a blackout giving him time to replace his own head with a fake one. He then belted out ‘Devil’s Food’, ‘Steven’ and ‘Ballad of Dwight Fry’ but he did not wear his customary straight jacket.

<p style="MARGIN: 0cm 0cm 10pt" ="msonormal"="">Next he disappeared for a while and the band cranked out a killer riff, and there was a great drum solo. It was amazing because at the end of the solo the drummer threw his drumstick out to the crowd. I saw it come towards me and never thought for a moment I would get it. But all these hands went up and the drumstick fell between us. I got on my knees and there it was! I grabbed it quickly without thinking and stuffed it up my shirt. I arose and pretended I did not have it, but I could feel it digging into my ribs. I could not believe it. I checked it out later and it had a signature of Eric Singer engraved on it, but he was not playing at the concert I attended. Ah well it made a nice keepsake.

Then the riff crunched out from ‘Billion Dollar Babies’ where he threw a lot of fake billion dollar notes out. I could not get any but I had my drumstick so I wasn’t perturbed.

Next he sung ‘School’s Out’ and we all were jumping in the mosh pit. It was a pretty subdued mosh pit as there were lots of girls and kids and nobody was getting out of line though I got shoved by some lunatic from behind. I saw the security guard coming over and the offender disappeared. There’s always one isn’t there? The lead guitarist threw out a few picks and I could not get any but the guy beside me did. He said to me that he was a drummer and would love to take home that drumstick I had. He wanted to swap the pick for it but I kept telling him I would not swap until he gave up. He looked really annoyed. I hoped he would not try and steal it from me later. He did not but I did not give him the chance as I bolted out to the car after it was over – the things that go on at rock concerts!

There was an encore and we all screamed out “Alice! Alice! Alice!” till our throats were raw. He came out with his gothic band and launched into ‘Poison’ and the crowd sung with smiles on their faces as they all loved this song and knew every lyric. I will never forget this moment. I love the way Alice looked out at us and just stood there singing back to us, a formidable presence in black. Next he did ‘Elected’ a very early hit single and I think after this was ‘The Life and Death of the Party’ though at this point I was losing count. ‘Six Hours’ and ‘Is It My Body’ ended the show to rapturous applause.
It was a terrific concert. The man was in full voice, raspy and loud, full of attitude. I think the lighting was adequate but it was not Pink Floyd. Overall, this was one of the best concerts I have attended and I would see him again if he comes my way. Love you Alice – Pioneer, Innovator, Legend!
