It’s MOVEMENT weekend here in Detroit. Happy Memorial Day. Pulse. Beats. A thrum of fuzz; a scramble of synths. Melody strangled under wiry, caustic layers of exquisite and obfuscating plug-ins and garbling effects. Deastro used to make dream-pop. It used to be naive. It used to soar, at safe heights and at speeds you could keep up with… This is a nifty, nimble space-ship fraying apart amid a seemingly accelerating rate, hyper-drive, the propulsive affectation of techno, rhythms reaching warp-9.

It’s MOVEMENT weekend here in Detroit. Happy Memorial Day. I’m playing back some of the newest electro-(and not so electro-)based music released by Detroit artists this week.

Starting with the formidable newness from Deastro:

Clear Keep….

Clicks.

Pulse.

My ears feel bound to the pedals of a bike that is cranking at unsustainable revolutions, like they almost can’t keep up or that I can’t just stay seated while listening to this. I have to be up, moving, forward, up, out, somewhere else, somewhere onward… Music that can give you a dreadful yet invigorating kind of uncanny runner’s high.

NEXT:

Dakota Bones swaggers with sassy leftfield-flung synth pop panache, deep into an almost vintagey-ringing 80′s club jam, with cyber-squeaks from synths grooving in the wings and weird warbling atmospheric overlays to where you might feel like you’re in Kraftwerk’s Electric Cafe.

This single started streaming a few months ago on Soundcloud…

But the magnificent, cheesy, disorienting video montage came out just a week ago. You can listen back to the works of Dakota Bones (i.e. Ben Christensen…also of Slufter), here.

Have a nice weekend.

Make no mistake, the hooks are still there on a song like opener “Party Angels,” which recalls the Smashing Pumpkins at their most stunningly difficult, or the sexual tension that raged in the background when Sonic Youth were playing. The twin vocals of Jaye Thomas and Lisa Poszywak (real life beaus and it shows) are both sweet and sinister, kinda like those little girls in the Shining with without the hotel and Jack Nick.
Their album (coming out June 4th) isn’t all retro-revivalist retread… They’ve got some signature spaced-out atmospheric instrumentals and a secret weapon by the name of Almighty Prolific.

But, if you think about it, we’ve heard this before. When I actually took a minute and stopped aural injections of the brand new or the old cozy‘s, I realized that these last few months have brought a considerable cache of “epic productions,” or at least album’s with thick back-stories, their releases drummed up into events -if merely because they are embossed as next or new chapters, continuing music sagas (starring certain iconic bands) that we’ve grown familiar with, enchanted-by, or completely intoxicated with their mix of kool-aid.

David Bowie came back to life. My Bloody Valentine finally let their shoegaze cat out of the bag. Black Flag (or, at least some of the old crew + Greg Ginn) are getting back into the van, with a new album. Even locals like Saturday Looks Good To Me got back into the groove with their first album in six years: One Kiss Ends It All. Oh, and I almost forgot: ADULT. is back, also, with The Way Things Fall…

ADULT. Perform at the MOVEMENT Electronic Music Festival (Red Bull Music Academy Stage) 5:30 pm – Sunday

Those rough skater ballad harking guitars and nasal boy vocals might invite seminal indie-flavors from maybe a Superchunk or an Archers of Loaf, but the keyboards and harmonies could easily jettison this thing into space-rock’s airspace, if not for the softening chamber-pop crackle easing in with those tender, wispy girl vocals taking the lead along with the giddier peal of those xylophones.

You’ll experience that blend of genres and playfully gnawing vocals on the single below, only to be shifted suddenly towards the end, for a minute-long outtro taking on a spooky, psychedelic folk waltz off and up towards the snarky celestial hang-out of these Other Angels.
