Rain only brightens a young raver's heart, especially if you were wearing water repellent-clothing or burned up the previous two sunny days inside fake fur, feathers and leather festival gear. I'm home, where I belong, tired but happy, going through over 300 pictures and fresh memories of Movement 2010, which will go down as one of the best of the series for many reasons. It may have been the most successful in diversifying its dance card since the surreal DEMF in 2001, the year Carl Craig was fired just weeks before what still stands as the most eclectic lineup in the festival's 11 years. Talent then included Tortoise, Jazzanova, Laurent Garnier, De La Soul an...

Sunday Highlights

Robert Hood Main StageDerrick MayWill Sessions and Phat KatK HandDJ GodfatherRecloose...

Shocker: Modern Life Not Rubbish

To say Plastikman's performance on Saturday was a supersonic meditation on what we've all become is a bit rich (pardon the pun). To call it right might be to say that it was many things. It was ambitious and spectacular, no doubt about that, a bold communication from the first digital bleep to its last, lasting just over what seemed a very short hour.Crisp and thunderous live sound assaulted thousands of fans at Hart Plaza's Main Stage, around its concrete bleachers and back toward the Noguchi Fountain, along the grassy fringes of the bowl. As a cylindrical plume of lights flickered, triggered and synced via Ableton software and touch-mixing hardware by Derivative, Richie Hawtin controlled it all from within what looked liked a giant synthetic tube. You could see him wiggling in there, but...

Saturday Highlights

PlastikmanTheo ParrishRick Wilhite on Made in Detroit stageKirk DegiorgioKyle Hall (with Carl Craig watching)ScionMade in Detroit aka Underground Stage tech crewMark ErnestusDiego Rivera Mural, Detroit Institute of Arts...

Timeline At Music Hall Friday

Timeline Live at Music Hall / "2010 A Detroit Odyssey" from Carleton Gholz on Vimeo.

The good news: Richie Hawtin will perform in his place on the BeatPort Stage Sunday, May 30, 9 p.m. until midnight. Villalobos did not receive his work visa back in time due to unexpected bureaucratic obstacles, to paraphrase the release from his press team in Frankfurt.Hawtin's Plastikman live performance will be the headliner on the Vitaminwater Main Stage the first night of the festival, Saturday, May 29, 11 p.m. - midnight. After Hawtin performs a three-hour set on Sunday, he will join the sold out Voyage Royal: I'm on a Boat 2 after-party to perform with Magda on the second floor of the Detroit Princess. Rock the boat baby....

Bienvenido, Ricardo!

Trippy, minimal techno-house crossover star Ricardo Villalobos is coming back to Detroit for the first time since 2002. The Chilean-German producer/DJ has been confirmed to perform at the Movement Electronic Music Festival ending weeks of rumors of his appearance, a major coup for Ferndale-based promoters Paxahau. Villalobos was among a handful of artists who reportedly refused to set foot in the U.S. after the country sent ground troops to Iraq. His performance in Detroit will be his only North American date. Paxahau also announced that a fifth stage, sponsored by Movement Torino, has been added to the festival. Also 32 additional acts were booked for the three-day dance party, held at downtown's Hart Plaza May 29-31. Some of the best of the rest include: Booka Shade, Jimmy Edgar, J...

Rave On: Movement 2010 Rolls Out Headliners

The countdown officially begins now for Movement 2010, Detroit's biggest electronic music party held each Memorial Day weekend. Let's see, it's 79 days (if our calculations are correct) until the first beats roll out at downtown's Hart Plaza, where the festival has been held since 2000.Even bigger news: the headliners for the Main Stage, and a partial listing of other performers, were just announced (at 12:01 a.m., as a matter of fact). On Saturday, May 29, Plastikman, Richie Hawtin's wriggly alter ego, goes live for the first time ever at Movement. The last North American Plastikman gig was at Montreal's MUTEK Festival in 2004. Also headlining (and doing it live) are Kevin Saunderson's Inner City on Sunday, May 30; and Model 500, led by techno pioneer Juan Atkins, closing the festival on...
