One of the most beautiful beaches in the world is in search of two beautiful people who will take on the responsibility of advocating its preservation and protection beginning this February as the search for the first ever “Mr. and Ms. Boracay Ambassadors” formally opens.

Organized by the BC Production & Management House, the “Mr and Ms Boracay Ambassadors” is in search for interested and qualified men and women who not only exude beauty on the outside but most importantly on the inside as the chosen ambassador and ambassadress will be tasked to promote environmental awareness and serve as role models on how one can protect and preserve Mother Nature.

This competition, unlike other beauty pageants, not only advocates a good cause but it also supports a good cause, as proceeds of the event will go to the Philippine Red Cross Boracay Chapter.

Auditions will be held this Saturday (Feb 9) and Sunday (Feb 10) at Clover Restobar, Panay Avenue, Quezon City and this Feb 16 and 17 in Ambassador in Paradise Resort in Boracay. This is open to all men and women aged 18 to 26 years old, single, of good moral character, and at least 5’ 4” in height for females and 5’ 9” for males. Winners will receive prizes of worth P150,000 each.

On the other hand, Matteo Guidicelli is taking his bow as an indie actor playing a dual role in Paglaya sa Tanikala, directed by Michael Angelo Dagnalan and associate-produced by STAR contributor Ferdy Lapuz, which is one of the five entries in the New Wave Section of the 2012 Metro Filmfest, screening from Dec. 18 to 22 at Glorietta Cinemas in Makati City.

In Paglaya sa Tanikala, commissioned by the Somascan priests to commemorate the 500th anniversary of 16th century Italian St. Jerome Emiliani’s liberation from the shackles through the intercession of Virgin Mary, Matteo plays Emiliani, a troublemaker-turned-soldier who fought against the Germans before he led a spiritual life; and a modern-day Somascan brother who helped kids in an orphanage.

“Very challenging,” said Matteo who studied acting in New York, chosen for the role, according to Ferdy, “because of his being half-Filipino and half-Italian.”

A soft drink a day raises prostate cancer risk: study

STOCKHOLM, Sweden - Men who drink one normal-sized soft drink per day are at greater risk of getting more aggressive forms of prostate cancer, according to a Swedish study released Monday.

"Among the men who drank a lot of soft drinks or other drinks with added sugar, we saw an increased risk of prostate cancer of around 40%," said Isabel Drake, a PhD student at Lund University.

The study, to be published in the upcoming edition of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, followed over 8,000 men aged 45 to 73 for an average of 15 years.

Those who drank one 330-millilitre (11-fluid-ounce) soft drink a day were 40% more likely to develop more serious forms of prostate cancer that required treatment.

The cancer was discovered after the men showed symptoms of the disease, and not through the screening process known as Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA).

Those who ate a diet heavy on rice and pasta increased their risk of getting milder forms of prostate cancer, which often required no treatment, by 31%, while a high intake of sugary breakfast cereals raised the incidence of milder forms of the cancer to 38% Drake told AFP.

While further research was needed before dietary guidelines could be changed, there are already plenty of reasons a person should cut back on soft-drink consumption, she noted.

The men in the study had to undergo regular medical examinations and kept a journal of their food and drink intake.

Previous studies have shown that Chinese and Japanese immigrants in the US develop prostate cancer more often than peers in their home countries.

Further research on how genes respond to different diets would make it possible to "tailor food and drink guidelines for certain high-risk groups," Drake said.

Bigfish presents Exception Music Festival

Bigfish presents the first-ever Exception Music Festival on Nov. 24, 4 p.m. at the Bonifacio Global City. With a total of 27 acts set to seize the stage, Exception is the country’s most massive outdoor dance music gathering to date. Grammy-nominated American beatmaster BT leads the pack of performers which includes some of the hottest foreign and local DJs and bands.

The major musical congregation will house three stages to accommodate its spectacular line-up. Gay-Jesus Play “Corpus Christi” Shut Down In Athens, Cast Charged With Blasphemy

A production of Terrence McNally’s Corpus Christi in Greece has been canceled and its cast and producers charged with blasphemy.

The play, which imagines Jesus and the Apostles as modern-day gay men in Texas, had drawn violent protests by priests and members of the nationalist party Golden Dawn, Reuters reports.

Dozens of demonstrators, including some from Golden Dawn, blocked the entrance of the theater and clashed with police on the night of its premiere last month.

Bearded black-robed priests holding crosses were shown on television tearing up posters promoting the play. The Orthodox Church is an integral part of Greek society and a powerful institution.

Director Laertis Vasilio, one of the defendants named in a lawsuit filed by Bishop Seraphim of Piraeus, said authorities should be focusing on Greece’s crippling corruption scandals: “What I see is that there are people who have robbed the country blind who are not in jail and the prosecutor turns against art.” Vasiliou and his crew face several months in prison if found guilty of insulting religion, malicious blasphemy and other charges.

This is hardly the first time Corpus Christi has faced such ire—playwright McNally received death threats during its 1998 Broadway run, and a documentary about the play brought out Christian groups when it screened in April in San Francisco.
