Mets News: Mets Introduce Jason Vargas

The New York Mets finalized possibly their last move of the off-season by introducing starter Jason Vargas to the Mets media on Sunday. The deal they settled on is a two-year deal worth $16 Million dollars with incentives. The deal also includes a club option for 2020.

The reasoning for such an off the radar move is to provide insurance and depth to a starting staff that has dealt with injuries to much of season last year. The Mets now have a competition to fill their last two spots in their rotation. The rotation right now can consist of Noah Syndergaard, Jacob deGrom, and Vargas with Matt Harvey, Zack Wheeler, Steven Matz, Seth Lugo, and Robert Gsellman fighting to remain on the major league roster.

The Mets in a perfect world would like to have Matz and Harvey taking the last spots with Wheeler working out of the bullpen and Gsellman and Lugo starting in Triple-A.

Vargas, 35, a former Royal and Met, made the All-Star team for the first time in his 12-year career last season before hitting a wall in the second half. He had a 2.62 ERA before the All-Star break and a 6.28 ERA after that, finishing at 18-11 with a 4.16 ERA.

Vargas had a resurgent September last year, and he said then-Royals pitching coach Dave Eiland — who campaigned to sign him after taking the same position with the Mets — was instrumental in fixing the problems that plagued him.

“We just went back to working on some of the basic simple things mechanically and then really just trying to focus on pounding the bottom of the strike zone and, most importantly, that down-and-away fastball to a righthander,” Vargas said. “Once we got our thumb on it and figured out what the cause was and started making the right pitches, we both had a good idea that was the issue that was going on.”

The Mets have struck a two-year deal with third baseman Todd Frazier, according to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic. If he passes a physical, Frazier will receive a $17MM guarantee.
