For many, pinball is a lifelong obsession, but for the father-son duo behind Pino Mods, the journey into the heart of the machine began in a surprisingly modern era. From their home base in France, Lionel and Yoann Poli have quickly become staples in the international modding community, blending high-tech 3D printing with a deep respect for the "soul" of the game. In our latest interview, we sat down with Lionel and Yoann to discuss their origin story, their design philosophy, and the unique challenges of shipping French creativity to the world.

The beginnings- Jurassic Park Heliblade

Every great modder has a "spark" moment. For the Polis, it was the arrival of a Stern Jurassic Park. While the machine was a masterpiece, Lionel noticed a static detail that just didn't sit right: the fixed helicopter blade.

“When we bought the Jurassic Park machine, we saw the blade... it's a fixed metal cutter. It's fixed. We saw that on a Premium version, there is movement on this heliblade. So we tried to do that.” - Lionel

That desire to bring realism and movement to a static playfield launched their first product. Yoann, a software engineer by trade, brought the technical muscle to the table, using 3D printing to turn his father’s vision into a spinning reality.

The Art of the Blank Page

Pino Mods doesn’t just iterate; they innovate. Whether it’s the massive "Shark" from Jaws or the intricate "Geiger Counter" for James Bond, Yoann finds his greatest joy in starting from nothing.

“For me, I would like to say my favorite one is the shark from Jaws. It's very cool because, again, we create from a completely blank page and we created everything... it represents a real evolution of my skill on 3D. — Yoann ”

However, creating a beautiful mod is only half the battle. Lionel is quick to point out that a mod must "make sense" within the world of the machine. If a toy is already available on the market, they’ll use it to save customers money—but if the quality isn't there, they build it from scratch.

Quality Above All

The conversation took a serious turn when discussing the "alligator clip" culture of early modding. Being a maker in France while serving a predominantly U.S. market (nearly 80% of their customers!) brings its own set of hurdles—from fluctuating shipping costs to the complexities of international tariffs. Yet, despite the distance, the Polis find the U.S. community to be their greatest source of inspiration and feedback.

"The good thing with Americans is... they always challenge. Why it's a good mod? Why it's not a good one? We always have feedback and it's very, very useful for us. We don't have this exchange in France."

What is a backboard ramp? 🤔

A pinball backboard ramp is a ramp that enters the backboard of the pinball machine—usually near the top of the playfield—and then re-emerges at a different location, such as another ramp exit, wireform, or habitrail.

Founded in 2010, Hooked on Pinball has become a familiar and respected name in the pinball modding community, known for creations that don’t just decorate a machine, but interact with it. We caught up with Robert to talk about how it all started, what keeps him inspired, and what makes a mod truly great.

From Personal Collection to Community Favorite

Hooked on Pinball began the same way many great modding stories do: with a collector who wanted just a little more out of his own machines. The early days were humble and hands-on. What makes a mod a favorite?

With more than a decade of creativity behind him, choosing a single favorite product isn’t easy. Still, Robert has a clear favorite.

“Overall, my personal favorite mod is the AC/DC Lightining Bolts which hit all the important ‘great mod criteria’- they interact with the game directly, fill a void in the machine aesthetics where the manufacturer has not developed the playfield landscape to its best potential.”

For him, the satisfaction came from transforming something simple into something dynamic,

“Bringing that flat factory plastic to life was very rewarding. And seeing that design incorporated into the Virtual version of AC/DC pinball was very cool”

That attention to visual depth and interaction is what has earned Hooked on Pinball its loyal following. The goal isn’t to distract from the game, but to elevate it.

Pinball mods have become an essential part of customizing machines, bringing new energy and personality to every flipper and bumper. Among the standout creators in the community is Mark Malmberg (aka Sparky), founder of Sparky Pinball, best known for his screen-based mods and striking silhouette toppers. We caught up with Sparky to talk about how it all started, what keeps him inspired, and which mod still holds a special place in his heart.

Q: When and why did you begin making pinball mods?

Sparky: Back in 2014, I had a Twilight Zone in my collection and I really wanted a TV mod that actually played video — something dynamic and fun. I knew there were tiny screens that could play video, so I started doing some research on the display that was used in the Tron arcade mod, and I was able to program it to play video. At the same time I had a Simpsons Pinball Party and decided to do a second pink version playing Itchy & Scratchy cartoons.That was the beginning of Sparky Pinball.

Q: What inspired you to get into making pinball toppers?

Sparky: I got a gift certificate to a metal shop that also does powder-coating, and I used it to create a silhouette "Sparky's" sign for my gameroom wall. I loved the effect! I had a Guardians of the Galaxy at the time, and I got the idea to do something similar that fit the screw pattern for the newer Sterns. It went over well, and I started getting requests for other titles, too. I currently have over 25 silhouette toppers available — including the newest King Kong.

Q: What do you enjoy about making and selling your creations?

It’s always exciting when someone comes to me with a new idea — it keeps things fresh and pushes me to try new things.

Q: Do you have a favorite product?

Sparky: I’d have to say The Simpsons Pinball Party TV mod. It was the first mod I ever created, so there’s definitely a sentimental attachment to it. Plus, it fits the theme perfectly. At that time, restoring the machine from the ground up was my main focus — it had a lot of issues, but that’s where it all started. After that, I picked up a Black Knight and a Ghostbusters. That’s when the real modding began.

The Ghostbusters felt too empty to me. I thought, "There should be more figures in here!" I tried making a stack of books using small model books to place next to the captive ball. It actually looked pretty good, but I wanted it to light up with LEDs. That led me to buy a 3D printer and start experimenting. From there, I just kept learning more and more.

Q: What do you enjoy about making and selling your creations?

Marc: The real fun for me is in the drawing and constructing. That’s where I really feel the creativity. Over time, I’ve connected with a lot of pinball friends who share their ideas with me, and that exchange is a big part of the enjoyment. The production part can be a grind — some mods take a lot of work to make — but after the creative burst at the beginning, I’d say the packaging is the only part of production that’s still fun. That said, there’s nothing quite like the magic of that first test print or installing a mod for the first time. It never gets old.

Q: Do you have a favorite product?

Marc: That’s a tough one — each project has something special about it. But if I had to choose, I’d say it’s my Ghostbusters book stack with integrated LED lighting. It was my first real modding project and basically set me on the path I’m still on today. I also really enjoy projects that let me use a mix of tools — the 3D printer, the CO2 laser, and ideally, some soldering too. The more hands-on and multi-faceted the process, the more fun I have.

This variation of protectors sits atop the shooter lane and provides great protection from ball damage. These 3D-printed protectors come in a variety of lengths as well as colors. They include permanent adhesive on the underside for installation. Variations of these is made by Pinball Medics in Canada and on Pinside (as shown in this photo).
Pros: Stronger than Mylar, provides maximum protection from ball damage; easy to clean.

The flexible plastic variation hit a middle ground between Mylar and hard plastic offering cushion, protection and minimizing damage.

One essential component found inside many pinball machines is the service outlet—a built-in electrical socket typically located within the machine’s cabinet. While often overlooked, this simple feature provides a convenient tool in the maintenance, repair, and powering of accessories in the machine.

What is a service outlet?

A service outlet is a standard power outlet installed inside the cabinet of a pinball machine. The outlet is usually wired separately from the main game circuits, ensuring it remains active even when the machine is powered off. Service outlets vary in their location as well as form by pinball machine manufacturers. There are many commonalities but some important differences too! The Stern Spike 2 machine for example is one of the systems that offers a Service Outlet in the backbox (vs. the cabinet) as shown in this image.

Many but not all pinball machines designed for U.S. distribution include a service outlet, however some require an adapter to allow the use of a standard 3-prong electrical plug. Many older Williams games as well as modern Chicago Gaming Remakes require this adapter. If you have an older game, you may find that your adapter has gone missing and a replacement may be necessary.

Pinball machines are manufactured primarily in the United States, where standard electrical outlets operate at 120V, 60Hz. However, in many other countries, electrical systems use 220-240V, 50Hz with different plug types. When pinball machines are distributed internationally, manufacturers typically modify the power supply to accommodate regional voltage requirements. The service outlet may also be adjusted or removed depending on local regulations. International pinball machines may have variations depending on voltage, plug type, and electrical regulations. Best bet is to know what you have- the more you know!

We are not the first on the block to realize the potential of new LED technology. Pinball is on fire with mod and accessory companies offering all sorts of new products using neon, addressable LEDs, and more. But we've been waiting, patiently, for the right moment and situation to appear- and, well, it's here! Recently, PinWoofer, a provider of high-quality pinball speaker upgrades, approached us to collaborate on bringing a suite of new cabinet lighting products to market. Fantastic, we said! Let’s do it!

Addressable LED Technology

The idea was simple- make the newest strip LED technology available in a high-quality format for speakers and outside the pinball cabinet lighting. The use of addressable LEDs, abbreviated ARGB, allows each individual LED to be controlled. So imagine the light show you can create when lights go off in a 'fire pattern' or continuously 'rolling' while changing colors. This creates far more dynamic light shows.

Integrated Hub System

Unlike our previous kits, these kits integrate with other lighting elements- speakers, backbox, and under cabinet. Hell ya! This transforms the light show by pointing it right at the player!

But even better, the rings are mounted with a polycarbonate diffuser ring. This creates a crisp, detailed, and beautiful light show. Different from inward-facing kits, you won’t see the LEDs either!

More Cabinet LEDs, Better Mounting

We are also pumping up the quality of the cabinet lighting itself. Our normal kits include 50cm of LEDs while these will include 80cm (19” vs 30”). Our lighting kit will continue to be mounted in a high-quality aluminum channel which protects and helps diffuse heat from the LEDs along with a clear diffuser. Lastly, we’ve improved the mounting for both the backbox and the undercabinet. There are 32 to choose from (primarily pre 80's games) but puzzles are limited to 500 pieces. And second, the Urban Aztec puzzle, available from Stern pinball, features artwork by Jesse Hernandez, is a unique and classy option.

There is nothing quite like playing the 'world under glass' on a game with upgraded playfield glass. There are several varieties available but our favorite is the Invisiglass brand available from Marco Specialties and other pinball retailers. This non reflective glass will have you trying to reach through and touch the playfield. Its that good! This is the perfect pinball gift as many pinball lovers never invest in upgraded glass. Be sure to check that the game you are buying for doesn't already have upgraded glass.

All About Mods: What are plastic protectors?

Frequently, we get questions about the purposes and use of plastic protectors by customers who are new to pinball modding. In this post, we talk about not only why you might consider buying plastic protectors but the variations you can find on the market.

So what are pinball plastic protectors?

Protectors are pieces acrylic or PETG cut in the shape of the factory plastics in your game. These plastic protectors are used on areas in the game where they get the most abuse from the traveling pinball, such as the lower playfield. Often when looking at older machines (pre-2000's), you'll find the slingshot plastics are broken. The purpose of plastic protector sets is to remedy this problem by creating a buffer layer between the factory plastics and the ball.

Plastic protectors also enhance the visual appeal of your pinball machine. Our plastic protector sets come in colors that compliment the game artwork. When the light shines under the plastic it provides an accent color to the playfield.

Types of Material and Colors

Two of the most common materials for protector sets are acrylic and PETG. Each type has its own strengths depending on your needs.

Acrylic is used broadly in the industry by many companies to make plastic protectors. It is thicker than the games plastics which provides great protection and it is available in a variety of fluorescent colors. The fluorescents provide vibrant edge lighting when placed over an area in the game with LEDs. Currently our flourescent acrylics are available in orange, yellow, green, blue and pink-aka 'red'. Clear acrylic is also available for those who do not want to change the visual effect of their playfield.

Acrylic is a great material for those who want durability as well as enhancing the look of their game. The drawback for acrylic is that the thickness of there material can mean that some games require longer hardware than the ones that come with the game.

PETG in the pinball industry has historically been available only in clear and is popular due to its cost effectiveness, strength and thin profile. Because PETG protectors are often thinner they therefore doesn't typically require you to replace any of your games hardware (longer screws, etc). Recently our friends at Color Guard have developed a variety of colored PETG protector sets; red, green, purple, orange, yellow and blue. The colored PETG provides a much more subtle color accent than the acrylic.

True colors that are often not found in the acrylic style protectors such as red, purple and green are available in PETG. These truer colors do not block the light like their equivalent fluorescent version in acrylic.

The primary strengths of the PETG is their lower profile (additional hardware not required), their strength and the color availability. The slim fit and true colors of PETG are better for those who want a much more subdued effect on their playfield.

Installation

Plastic protector sets are relatively simple to install and require a nut driver (be sure to have a variety of sizes) and a screw driver (Phillips head). The type of set you purchase will dictate how much of the factory hardware must be required.

Types of Plastic Protector Sets

Protector sets come in a standard style that typically includes four pieces- two for the slingshots, two for the return lanes. These are the areas of the playfield where your plastics are most commonly likely to break.

You can also purchase sets that have a few additional pieces to protect or accent other areas of the playfield. Sometimes multi piece sets also come in multiple colors.

Lastly, sets are available for the entire playfield. These sets include fluorescent plastics for all of the lit pieces on the playfield. They have quite a dramatic effect on the visual experience of the game but are more challenging to install given the more complex installation of removing more playfield parts.

Most plastic protector sets are available in either colored or clear. All colored protector sets change the look of the factory plastics. Take this into consideration when purchasing the protectors to be sure you are happy with the color change on the factory plastics. In situations where the change in color is not to your liking, consider a clear set which offers protection and a clean look.

There isn't a doubt about whether you need plastic protectors- these pieces break over time and are worthy of the protection. What specifically you buy is the more important question. When you are buying, consider what effect you want the protectors to have as well as how much time investment you want to make for the installation.

Pinball Cabinet Accessories Part One: Beverage Caddies

This month we are kicking off a series of posts about ways to accessorize your pinball cabinet. From light kits, speakers and shooter rods to beverage caddies, follow along as we navigate the options for cabinet upgrades. Our first post in the series focuses beverage caddies. We will outline what to consider when you buy a caddie and review the best options available on the market.

One of the easiest and most functional upgrades you can make to your pinball machine is a beverage caddie. For the home pinball collector, a drink holder is convenient way to enjoy a beer or your favorite drink while playing. For the pinball operator with games in bars and restaurants, the drink holder is a great way to keep drinks off the glass. In either case, beverage caddies are a great addition to any pinball machine.

The beverage caddie is also one of the easiest pinball part to install on your game. Most beverage caddies for pinball machines are mounted using the bolts on one of front legs of your pinball machine. This can be easily accomplished with by propping up the front of your pinball cabinet and removing the leg bolts to install the caddie. While magnetic cup holders are available, we don't recommend them given the lack of magnetic strength these products offer. You might find your favorite drink on the floor instead of held in place on your sturdy pinball leg.

So what should you consider purchasing a beverage holder for your pinball machine? The first and perhaps most important consideration is location- do you want your cup holder on the left or the right? Some home collectors we've met have even installed their cup holder on the front of the machine which keeps your drink away from he flipper buttons. If you want the most flexibility for installation location, select a design with a universal mount that can be used on either side of your pinball machine. For example, the PinGulp 3.0 (available at Mezel Mods) or the Pin-Buddy™ (Marco Specialties) that allow mounting on either side of your game.

A close second to preferred installation location is the cup size you'll need for your favorite beverages. If you will you be using your caddie for beer mugs or coffee cups, you'll want a holder that has an opening to accommodate the handle. Additionally, you'll want to consider the overall diameter of the caddie to make sure you favorite container fits right inside. [A standard size pint glass is about 3" in diameter at its widest point. For example, the PinGulp Premium fits standard pints and bigger mugs while the PinGulp 3.0 has a smaller diameter and fits mostly pints, cans and bottled drinks.

The final functional aspect to consider is ease of cleaning. Can the caddie be removed easily for cleaning without taking off the leg bolts on the pinball machine? Does it have a drain that allows liquids to drain out the bottom instead of pooling in the bottom? Keep these features in mind as you shop for a drink holder for your favorite pinball machine. With all the nuts and bolts out of the way, you can consider the aesthetic aspects of the beverage caddie. Most of the widely available caddies are black (glossy or matte) but can also be found in translucent colors like this one from Pinball Life.

But why stop with a plain beverage holder? Some game collectors take their beverage caddies to another level by having them hand painted or by adding decals to integrate with the pinball machines theme.

While 2020 has been a windfall for online retailers (including pinball), US e-retailers faced a change to the requirements for selling to the UK and the EU. To the surprise of many, November 12th 2020 brought the EU's implementation of a 25% tariff on US imports, including, pinball parts. Together, these changes have changed not only how US companies approach these markets but customers willingness to import from the US.

The UK exit from the EU which had been on the horizon for several years finally became a reality effective 2021. The controversial change ushers in a new world for buyers in the UK seeking to import products from outside the country. While this means increased complications for exporters attempting to sell to the UK, Mezel Mods customers need not be concerned!

We are excited to announce a new, more convenient way for UK pinball enthusiasts to get their fix of pinball mods. Now UK customers can find their favorite Mezel Mods at Pinball Bazaar. Our goal is to ensure products are available for all new releases in addition providing a steady stream products for previous titles.

Top 10 uses for Novus® Polish

If you don't have Novus® for cleaning and restoring your playfield plastics, pick some up today. Novus is the go-to cleaner for your games because ordinary household cleaners can damage cause scratching and damage!
If you are like us however, you have an excess of Novus Polish in your pinball toolbox. You may suffer from 'you-can-never-have-too-much-of xyz' syndrome and pick up a bottle of Novus everytime you visit Marco Specialties. Or you may just forget that you haven't used the four bottles you bought earlier this year. In either case, you may want to know just how fabulous Novus is beyond the pinball playfield!

Here is our top ten list for using Novus Polish beyond pinball.

Car interior
Next time you are in the car, take a look at all the acrylic and plastic 'chrome'. Gone are the days where cars are made out of metal. Clean up the slight scratches on these surfaces or simply polish them to a fine shine. Novus will blow away any of the usual car care products.

Car headlights
The best use we found for Novus is cleaning your cars dingy headlights. Mezel Mods own Jared Villalobos decided to test Novus on his dirty headlights. After a treatment with all three of the Novus polishes the yellowed and foggy headlights were transformed. According to Jared it was, 'like magic.' Sounds great!

CDs and DVDs
While CDs and DVDs are slowly making their way to the back of most closets, you still encounter those times when the old disc is necessary. And if your house is like ours, XBOX® games and movie DVDs are left stacked on one another, gathering dust, dirt and scratches. Put Novus to the test on these puppies- see if you can't fix your old Forrest Gump DVD!

Microwave oven door
Ever notice how the door on your microwave is foggy? If not your microwave, go check out the doors on your washer and dryer. Foggy, right? A little bit of Novus 1 and that fog will be gone. Impress your friends and neighbors.

Because these puppies are made of acrylic, they will easily scratch and dull with ordinary cleaners. If only there was a ladder handy, we'd have the cleanest sky lights in the neighborhood.

Record players are making a comeback and are now considered vintage (which means cool for those of us older types). If you never put yours away or are thinking about taking one down from the attic, give the dustcover a good cleaning with Novus. Recent Interview with John Borg

In an interview by Mike Sorenson of PinGame Journal, John Borg talks about his recent game designs including The Walking Dead and Kiss. As a favorite pinball designer, the article is an interesting peek into John's creativity and ingenuity. And we were excited that John mentioned our work during the interview!

In the article, John shares his enthusiasm for episode one of AMC's The Walking Dead which he still says is his favorite. He also talks about his ideas for toys and shots that did not make it into the final version of the game. For example, John describes his plan for a rotating barn and a ball lock that would dispense balls one at a time to, "mimic the scene where the zombies came out of the barn." Many other ideas for character related shots where part of his original ideas that were eliminated along the way for various reasons.

He also shared his affection for the Govenor's Fish Tank Topper which was sculpted by the show's special effects makeup designer, Greg Nictero. The article goes on to say,"As if that wasn't enough, 'Mezel Mods made a tower that bolts into the game that is very cool,' John tells me. 'I had originally planned for one and it's great that our friends at Mezel Mods took care of that for me. They also made a barn model that bolts in by the left orbit shot.'

We've been very excited about our partnership with Stern on projects like the prison tower for the reason John points out- it allows us the chance to help bring the designers original vision to fruition. It is tough as a designer not to be able to incorporate all ideas into the finished product- cost and time limitations frequently get in the way. Extending those original design ideas along with adding our own is part of what gives us 'juice'.

John has been a delight to work with both as a designer and as a human being. He is thoughtful, caring and just plain fun to be around! So a huge thank you to you John for being such a fantastic game designer and an all around swell guy! Pinball love from the Mezel Mods team.
