Sri T. Mohandas Pai

Sri T. Mohandas Pai is the President of Dr. T.M.A Pai Foundation, Manipal, President of Mahatma Gandhi Memorial College Trust, Chairman of I.C.D.S Ltd., Chairman of Manipal Media Network Ltd. (Publishers of Udayavani Daily newspaper and other publications.)

Born on 20^th June 1933, he is the eldest son of Dr. T.M.A Pai. He had his education in Board High School, and the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial College, Udupi. Later he graduated in law, in Kolhapur (1951-53) securing the First Rank from Poona University.

He joined the family business in 1953 as the General Manager of Canara Land Investments (which was running the Tile Factory in Manipal) and took additional responsibilities at Manipal Power Press as Managing Partner. Mr. Satish Pai joined him in the year 1957.

Mr. Mohandas Pai was in charge of Administration and Financial Planning. Mr. Satish Pai was looking after the production. New automatic typesetting machines and printing machines were imported to enhance the quality of printing and the Press got the National Award for quality printing in the Year 1961 (Book Printing). This was followed by many State and National Awards. With the aggressive expansion of the Press with latest Offset machines and photo composing, the Press got all India recognition.

In 1970 Udayavani Daily newspaper was started and in a very short time it gained enormous popularity. The newspaper was started by the associate company. The Manipal Printers and Publishers Ltd., of which Mr. Mohandas Pai was the Managing Director and Mr. Satish Pai the Joint Managing Director and Editor of the newspaper and magazines.

A Web Offset machine was acquired and Udayavini was one of the earliest newspapers to be printed by Web Offset machine. The daily newspaper won the National Award for Best printing for several years continuously. In 1983 Taranga, a Weekly was started. For printing the cover and inside pages in colour a ultramodern Web Offset machine was installed. Automatic binding machines were acquired for biding the Weekly which crossed 2 lac copies of circulation.

Mr. Mohandas Pai has travelled extensively in countries like United Kingdom, Europe, U.S.A., Japan etc. With Mr. Satish Pai he attended the leading Printing Exhibitions such as DRUPA (Germany), Ipex (UK), Print (Chicago, U.S.A) several times. The exposure he got by visiting the Printing exhibitions helped in incorporating latest technology in the Press.

Today the Press has developed into a comprehensive printing establishment with more colour Web Offsets and automatic machines. Manipal Printers and Publishers Ltd. has changed its name to Manipal Media Network Ltd. and developed into a creditable and respected publishing house with Udayavani edition published from Manipal, Bangalore, Hubli and Mumbai. Taranga Weekly, Poopatara (Film monthly) and Tushara monthly digest.

This was possible because of the dedicated staff and Managers, disciplined and committed labour force.

In the year 1994, Manipal Printers and Publishers Ltd. got the Award recognising the services rendered in the field of journalism given by the Karnataka Patrika Academy, Bangalore and Mr. Mohandas Pai received the same. He was also member of the Executive Committee of the Indian Newspaper Society (I.N.S) for two terms.

Mr. Mohandas Pai was appointed as the Joint Managing Director of ICDS Ltd., the Finance Company in the year 1989 and Managing Director in 1995. He continues to guide the same as Chairman and whole time Director.

He serves as the President of Dr. T.M.A Pai Foundation, President of Mahatma Gandhi Memorial College Trust, Chairman of the Governing Council of Rastrakavi Govinda Pai Samshodhana Kendra, Udupi, and Regional Resource Centre for Folk Performing Arts, Udupi and Yakshagana Kendra, Udupi.

Message from Sri T. Mohandas Pai

Respected Chairman, of the Awards Committee, Members of Academy of General Education, Manipal University, Syndicate bank and the Rotary Club of Udupi-Manipal,

I am thankful to you for selecting me for the New Year Award for the year 2012. I cherish this Award as it is from all the organizations that have been founded by my father late Dr. T.M.A Pai and I feel that this is a blessing from my dear father.

I have been a witness to the phenomenal development of Manipal from a barren plateau to the present University town of International fame. I was brought to Manipal at the age of 3 years when my Father shifted his residence from Udupi to live in Manipal.

The founding of the High School in 1949, the Medical College in 1953, Engineering College in 1956, College of Allied Sciences, a well equipped hospital, laid the foundation for the establishment of the future University.

I had my elementary education in the then newly started School and my high School education in Udupi. I did my College education in the newly started Mahatma Gandhi Memorial College and graduated in Law from Kolhapur (Poona University) in the year 1953.

I jointed the family business, The Canara Land Investments Ltd. and Manipal Power Press. It has been along and memorable journey in developing the Press into a modern comprehensive printing establishment. My cousin Mr. Sathish Pai also joined me in the business in 1957 and with his passion, hard work and dedication the Press has attained new heights and achieved greater name and fame.

The Newspaper Udayavani was started in 1970 with instant success. We started the Taranga Weekly in 1983. In a very short time it was the leading Kannada Weekly, thanks to the dedicated service rendered by successive editorial staff. This has helped the Manipal Media Network to become a creditable and respected media house. The Printing and Publishing industry has been described as follows:

Crossroads of Civilization

Refuge of all the Arts

Armoury of fearless truth

Against whispering rumour

From this place words may fly abroad

Not to perish on waves of sound

But fixed in time having been verified in proof

Friend you stand on sacred ground

It is in this kind of environment I spent more than five decades. The Press was printing various books published by Mysore and Karnataka Universities and different publishing houses.

I had varied experiences of meeting leading Kannada journalists, Literary figures, Musicians, Artists, well known Photographers and other leading personalities from various fields who visited our Press and the Media House.

I visited leading Printing exhibitions in Germany, England, USA with Mr. Satish Pai and this greatly helped us in modernizing our Press incorporating the latest technology and innovations in the printing field.

All this was possible because of the disciplined upbringing by my dear Father. The values of honesty and integrity and social sensitivity in business, financial planning and execution of any new enterprise, the habit and virtue of savings and investments were instilled in us by my Father. I am lucky and privileged to be his son and this has been my greatest source of strength in leading different enterprises. I always remember with gratitude my bellowed Mother Smt. Sharada Pai.

My gratitude and respect also goes to my uncle Upendra Pai. He was a very pious man with a simple living, dedicated nationalist, always wearing Khadi and ever helpful to the needy.

All his good qualities have been inherited by his sons Sri T.A Pai and Mr. Sathish pai. T.A Pai was like my elder brother, always guiding and helping us when we started the newspaper. Satish, (what can I say about him) is always there whenever I need him. He is a source of strength always concerned about me. We had a wonderful journey together in establishing and running the Press and the Media house successfully for more than five decades.

I also thank my brothers Ramdas, Narayana and Ashok who have been supporting me in all my endeavours.

I fondly remember my late brother Panduranga who was a live wire and endeared himself to everyone with his radiant smile spreading happiness.

I am now looking after the Dr. T. M. A Pai Trust as President and the MGM College. We have been giving merit scholarships in all the Colleges started by Dr. T. M. A Pai and this has been a very satisfying experience for me.

Lastly, I thank again all my friends and well wishers as also the sponsors of this Award and wish all of them and their families a very healthy and prosperous future

T. Mohandas Pai is the eldest son of Dr. T.M.A. Pai, founder of Manipal Institutions and Smt. Sharada Pai. He is an alumnus of MGM College, Udupi having studied in the very first intermediate batch during 1949-51 when the college started in the premises of the Mahatma Gandhi School run by Udupi Muncipal Council. After Intermediate he attended a course in Law and then he became an entrepreneur in Manipal, with the same insights into the intricacies of finance and administration in abundance as his father.

He has always kept aloof from quarters of political power and pelf. An upright person in matters of public life he is highly respected for his straightforwardness, independent decision and not deviating from his decision. His vision of an educational model that blends the best of tradition and modernity has proved to be the most appropriate one for our culture and times. Under his leadership, no attempt has been spared in providing the best infrastructure facilities needed for an ideal degree college.

Under his direction and able leadership the College is functioning in the pursuit of excellence.
