Did you know that divorce is a process?

di·vorce (dĭ-vôrs′, -vōrs′) n. the legal dissolution of a marriage; v. to sever the marital relationship with a spouse by a judgment or decree of divorce.

If divorce were as straightforward as the dictionary definition, the process would be a whole lot easier. But, the reality is, there are two sides to divorce — the emotional and the legal.

Couples, children, and extended families could carry on with their lives as if nothing much had changed. The “legal dissolution” could involve collegial discussions in lawyers’ boardrooms followed by the signing of papers, a handshake, and best wishes all around. Actually, some lawyers and judges favor the dictionary definition. “Treat your divorce as a business transaction,” they urge couples who come to see them. There’s a lot of wisdom in this piece of advice, if it is applied to the legal side of divorce. But this view neglects the emotional side of divorce. It’s as if they’re saying, “Business partnerships . . . marriage partnerships . . . what’s the difference?”

The wife of Yankee general manager Brian Cashman filed for divorce Friday — a day after her husband was publicly accused of a second affair, this time with a woman who was charged with shaking him down, sources said.

Mary Cashman, 42, submitted divorce papers in Stamford, Conn., superior court, listing her husband as “B.M. Cashman” and writing that the marriage “has broken down irretrievably.”

She is seeking permanent alimony, a split of their property and joint custody of their 13-year-old daughter and eight-year-old son.

Mary Cashman, who now has endured two publicly-humiliating allegations of her husband’s philandering, has been living apart from Brian Cashman in the family’s $3.7 million Darien, Conn., mansion with the kids, sources said.

She hired top divorce counsel Gaetano Ferro, who represented Jane Welch during her half-billion-dollar split from former General Electric boss Jack Welch.

Mary Cashman’s divorce filing came less than 24 hours after a TriBeCa woman, Louise Meanwell, appeared in Manhattan Criminal Court on charges she stalked Brian Cashman and extorted more than $6,000 from him.

Kim Kardashian has been making waves in Miami, as the divorce drama between her and ex-husband Kris Humphries seems to continually escalate. She’s reportedly in the sunny city for a new D-A-S-H store; however, are things taking a turn for the better and looking brighter for her love life, as well?

It may have been just a few short months ago that Kardashian and Humphries called it quits after their fairy-tale wedding and quick 72-day marriage. Dad's dilemma is with divorce and disclosure (2/03/2012)

Dear Amy: I have been putting off a divorce for far too long for various reasons. I have been married for 25 years. My wife had an affair early in our marriage

and we worked things out with counseling. Two years ago I caught her having another affair but for family and health reasons I did not divorce her at that time.

We put on an act for others, including our two children, so no one knows how bad our marriage is. Now my kids are in college and I want a divorce. My kids love their mother dearly, and she is a good mother.

Even though I am seething with anger under the surface, I do not want to do anything to hurt my children but I also do not like lying. I also don’t want them to somehow blame me for the divorce if I don’t tell them the real reason. We have a lot of family in town that we see often and my wife and I work in the same field.

My question is, what do I tell family, co-workers and, most important, my children about why we are divorcing?

My wife certainly does not want to tell anyone that

Miami-Dade court reporter ordered arrested over missing transcripts

In a legal drama that is delaying a dozen criminal trials including two Death Penalty cases a Miami-Dade court reporter was ordered arrested Wednesday after she failed to appear in court to explain why her firm cant transcribe a slew of depositions.

The court reporter: Roseann McMahon, whose company had been employed from 2008 to 2011 to digitally record depositions for a state-funded law firm representing poor clients.

McMahon, of Fort Lauderdale, had been ordered to court three times over the past month, each time to no avail.

I need to know a reason why Ms. McMahon is not here, Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Bertila Soto, the chief criminal administrative judge, told her lawyer Wednesday. The court is beginning to think she is never coming in and she is wasting everyones time. Has she considered that there are defendants who are sitting in custody because they cant get transcripts?

Soto ordered a writ of bodily attachment against McMahon, which allows Miami-Dade police officers to arrest her and bring her before the court. As of Wednesday night, McMahon was not in custody.
