The guest column by Jacksonville Bar Association President Michael Freed states: “We live in an age where there exists. . . an endless supply of polarizing and antagonistic opinions, but so little genuine, reliable information. The legal system and the legal profession have fallen victim to this dynamic. It is incumbent on each of us who are privileged to be attorneys to counter this trend — we need to be ambassadors for our profession. . . . As Florida Bar President Scott Hawkins reminded us during his visit last month, non-lawyers generally have no basis for choosing among candidates for the bench. Our friends, family and neighbors look to lawyers in their lives to help them make that choice. . . . The judicial branch of government around which our profession is centered
Read More...

Every woman who walks into our office wants an answer to the exact same question. She wants to know this: Will my family –both me and my children –be financially OK after the divorce?

To help answer that question, I advise all my clients on the importance of assembling a skilled, experienced divorce team. We talk about what they need to do in order to get their personal credit and finances in order. And, we discuss “the divorce basics,” such as the difference between separate and marital property, etc.

But, what comes next? If you’re going through divorce, is there anything else you can do to keep the odds in your favor?

Well, interestingly enough, over the years, I have noticed that certain personality traits seem to serve women particularly well during the throes of divorce. Women with these qualities seem to emerge from divorce in relatively good shape, and they start their single lives with determination and vigor.

With these women in mind, I’ve compiled a short list of the six key personal traits
Read More...

If Kris Humphries gets his way, all the dirty details from his upcoming date in divorce court with reality star Kim Kardashian will play out on TV and on the Web.

The New Jersey Nets basketballer and his lawyer, Lee Hutton, are angling for overexposure because they believe it will help their case if the ugly truth about the cutthroat reality-TV business is revealed to the general public.

They say that allowing cameras in the courtroom for the divorce proceedings will reveal that Kardashian was more interested in boosting ratings for her show, “Keeping Up with the Kardashians,” than in staying married to Humphries, according to www.tmz.com.

Kardashian, 31, filed for divorce from Humphries, 27, on Oct. 31, just 72 days after the couple’s wedding.

Madonna skipping Michigan

No big surprise here: Madonna, riding a wave of glory and big TV ratings after her Super Bowl XLVI halftime performance Sunday, has announced the dates for her upcoming world tour. She’ll be hitting the road to promote her new album, “MDNA,” which arrives March 26.

Now for the bad news (though it’s not exactly a big surprise either): The Michigan native has left her home state off the initial tour itinerary released Tuesday by
Read More...
The articles discusses The Florida Bar’s efforts to fight foreclosure fraud. Although no disciplinary actions against attorneys have been levied since complaints began to rise in the fall of 2010, the Bar is taking investigations seriously. While the attorney general’s probe focused on illegal activity, the Bar’s review also includes scrutiny of ethical violations.
