Welcome Family and Friends!

We’ve created this website to (hopefully!) be a useful resource to our guests who will be joining us in August at Lake Junaluska for our wedding. Since many of you have either never been there or haven't been in a long time, we thought you might like to have us do some of the research on the area for you. (However, we do a have a little disclaimer about this blog!)

Betsy never actually imagined creating a wedding website – and Michael asked, “You want to make what?” But here it is! Like we already mentioned, we made it in hopes of being helpful to our wedding guests. We aren’t exactly tech-savvy when it comes to making websites; however, we think we’ve found a workable, user-friendly format (that of course, if you know much about Betsy, is completely free!). Yet, if you can’t find something you need to know, please post a comment on the blog or email us for some assistance.

You may want to look into lodging options early to ensure you are able to reserve the room/house of your choice. You can find links to information about lodging in the Lake Junaluska area on this website, as well as in more detail in the "Details for Our Guests" section of our webpage at TheKnot.com. (It is password protected. If you need the password, email Betsy for help.)

The other important information you need to know is how to get to Lake Junaluska. We've listed directions from most of the major areas from which guests will be coming, as well as airport information. If you need to know something more, please let us know.

It is likely that we’ll continue to update the blog and the information on our webpage at TheKnot.com. So, come back to visit anytime! You can also subscribe to get the updates for the blog in a reader or via email. We'll keep this welcome message as the post that is listed first. When you are looking for updates, be sure to look immediately below this message.

Michael and I took a trip at the end of April to Lake Junaluska to do some more wedding planning. Here are some pictures I took. You can get a preview of some of the beautiful scenery you can look forward to seeing in August! (Click on the imagine to get a closer look.)

The pictures below and above are of the Susanna Wesley Garden which is a beautiful, quiet place on the grounds of Lake Junaluska.

I took most of the pictures in this post from (or near) The Walking Trail, which includes the section known as the Asbury Trail, where you will find the little waterfall shown above. On this 2.5 mile trail around the lake, you will also find beautiful landscaping, a butterfly garden, benches, and a gazebo. You should take time early one morning or late one evening to walk around the entire lake - it's a lovely venture!

Gift Registry

Michael and Betsy have recently registered at Bed, Bath, & Beyond, Belk, Macy's, and Target.

You may notice that we've registered for some of the same items at multiple stores. Our hope is to make things convenient for our guests. Of course, Betsy would like to make sure that you get the best deal possible, so here are some tips (a la her blog Save 4 Fun):

Shop for the best deal. All four of these stores run great sales periodically. Prices can vary from one store to another. That is another reason we have registered for some of the same items at multiple stores. Worried about duplicate gifts? Don't be. We'll handle it. (But getting it marked off the registry at the store where you make a purchase is very helpful.)

Do some comparison shopping not only between the different stores but between a store and its website. I've noticed that a store may offer a significantly lower price on one item in the store than they do online for the exact same item. However, at the same store another item may be priced higher in the store than on their website. Strange, but definitely worth checking into! Particularly watch for this price difference with the Macy's registry. At the time of this posting, I see an item that is 44% less online than in the store because the website offered a sale price. But on the flip side, I see another item that is 218% less in the store than online (and it's not on clearance, but it is on sale in the store).

If you buy something from our Macy's registry online through their Wedding Channel link, Wedding Channel will donate up to 3% of the cost of the gift to the American Cancer Society. There is no additional cost to you or us.

If you are saving for someone to go to college through Upromise, you have several ways to use our registry to help you save. Access Macys.com, BedBathandBeyond.com, or Target.com through the Upromise website and receive a percentage of your total purchase in college contributions to your Upromise account. For Bed, Bath, & Beyond, you have to use a credit card that you have registered with Upromise to get your college contribution. However, it will also work if you use that credit for purchases in the store or over the phone.

If you have a Discover Card, you can receive an additional 5% cashback bonus if you link to Target's website site through the Shop Discover program which can be accessed through Discover.com. Also, Discover is offering a 5% additional cashback bonus April 1 - June 30, 2008, for purchases at department stores when you sign up for the quarterly 5% Cashback Bonus promotion. Macy's and Bed, Bath, & Beyond are also Discover Cashback Bonus partners, so you could get your bonus to stretch even further at these two stores.

Macy's and Bed, Bath, & Beyond often put coupons in the newspaper or send them in the mail. Coupons are great ways to save! (But read the fine print for any restrictions because some of them don't apply to some name brand items.)

The Entertainment Book offers discounts in their book and/or on their website for Target.com, Bed, Bath, & Beyond, and Macys.com.

Finally, if you are going to make an online purchase, check out a website like Coupon Cabin to see if there are any current coupon codes which may get you a discount on the purchase or free shipping. Sometimes you can't combine them with some of the other offers that we've listed, but it's always worth trying.

At Gainesville, Georgia take 365 North to 441 North into North Carolina.

Travel two miles, then turn right on US-19.

Lake Junaluska Activities

If you stay at Lake Junaluska and don't want to leave the assembly, there are plenty of activities within walking distance, including sand volleyball, tennis, basketball, shuffle board, mini-golf, and a playground. Bring your swim suit, and check out the aquatic center with an outdoor pool, paddle boats, kayaks, and canoes. Lace up your walking or running shoes, and hit the 2.5 mile long trail that circles Lake Junaluska.

Lake Junaluska Aquatic Center - Open Daily Memorial Day to Labor Day, 10 AM - 6 PM Monday - Saturday and 1 PM - 6 PM Sunday.

There is a charge of $5.00 to rent a canoe, kayak or paddle boat, and also to play a round of mini golf.

Bring your golf clubs, and play the Junaluska Golf Course.

If you like fishing, bring your gear! You can purchase a North Carolina fishing license for $10 at Wal-Mart which is adjacent to Lake Junaluska.

At dusk if you head up to the amphitheater by the cross, you will find a great view of the sun setting behind the mountains.

On the upper level of the Harrell Center at Lake Junaluska, you will find a Cokesbury Bookstore. In addition to selling Bibles and other Christian books, they offer gifts, toys, postcards, and Lake Junaluska souvenirs.

Lake Junaluska Area Restaurants

A cafe is located on the lower level of the Harrell Center at Lake Junaluska.

Lillian's on the Lake is located at the Sunset Inn at Lake Junaluska and is open by reservation only.

The Haywood County Chamber of Commerce offers a list of many restaurants in the area, sorted by type and cuisine.

The Haywood County Tourism Development Authority also lists dining options on their website.

The Downtown Waynesville Association has a listing of restaurants as well. (Waynesville is the nearest town to Lake Junaluska.) Michael and Betsy ate dinner at the Lomo Grill on Church Street in Downtown Waynesville this spring and really enjoyed it!

Use these directions to the entrance of the Biltmore Estate. Biltmore Village is just outside of the estate's entrance.

Village shops are open Monday through Saturday 10 AM to 5:30 PM or 6 PM and Sunday noon or 1 PM to 5 PM.

Parking
There is free parking throughout the Village -- curbside and behind some of the shops. A trolley service has pick-up and drop-off location in the Village and throughout the City of Asheville.

There are a variety of lodging options at Lake Junaluska. The assembly is only a few miles in radius, so most people could walk to many of the locations within Lake Junaluska from these places. Note: the Lambuth Inn does sit high on a hill over looking the lake. Parking is generally available in most areas if you prefer to drive to any of the locations within the Lake Junaluska assembly.

Sunset Inn

The Sunset Inn is a bed and breakfast located within the Lake Junaluska assembly. (It is privately owned and operated, separate from the Lake Junaluska Conference Center and Retreat.) It located between the Lambuth Inn and the Terrace Hotel, so like other accommodations at Lake Junaluska, it is within reasonable walking distance of most locations within the assembly. The Sunset Inn has 12 guest rooms (most of which sleep 2 people, but one could accommodate up to 4). Some of the bathrooms are en suite while others are either shared or are detached but private.

House Rentals

Sunburst Realty has vacation rentals at Lake Junaluska (within the assembly) and surrounding areas (Waynesville and Maggie Valley). They offer weekly rates on houses that range in size from one to ten bedrooms. (Their houses at Lake Junaluska range in size from 3 to 6 bedrooms.) In June, July, or August, they only offer Sunday-Sunday rentals (no daily rates).
