Hey Peeps,
This creative edition is with Menna Riley, founder of Parlour Room Events in Halifax, NS.
After working with Menna, I have to say that the words ambitious, driven and fun describe her well. I appreciate her taking the time to answer some of my questions - in record time no less - another attribute of hers; she gets things done.
Thanks again Menna.

1. Parlour Room Events has been in business for a number of years now. Can you tell me how the event industry has changed since your beginnings?

Starting out (way back in the 1900s), Event Planning wasn’t even a recognized industry. Now, with the proven results events have delivered over the years as the number one way to engage your clients and deliver your company’s brand as an experience – the entire industry has flourished.

2. Does your business have a specialty when it comes to particular events?

Parlour Room Events specializes in running high-end promotional/launch events for companies promoting a new product or service, or celebrating a milestone such as an anniversary, award, or new digs. We cater specifically to the corporate market delivering strategic event solutions for employee recognition, industry awards, golf tournaments, and even create one-of-a-kind signature events to help our clients and the charities they care about achieve their goals.
Our mission is to raise the bar, and therefore our client’s and their guests’ expectations of what an event is and can be by exploring creative ways to tackle strategic challenges. With our dynamic mix of PR, marketing and event management prowess, we aim to elevate all events to their highest possible potential.
3. What does Parlour Room Events do that makes it a favorite and memorable go-to for clients?
Our tagline – The Science of Unforgettable - says it all. We examine our client’s needs, we shop around for the best suppliers, we strategize and then plan and execute on strategy – we do all the things our competitors do – but then we add our own special combination of intrigue, inspired and unique ideas, and wonder.
4. Being a highly social business, I assume that you work with and promote non-profits and charities. Can you tell me a little bit about your involvement?
Throughout the years we are proud to be able to have been involved with so many charities on a local, national, and international level. While our firm doesn’t offer discounts on services, we do sponsor one charity per year with event services. We select this charity based on contacts we receive throughout the year and the timing of the charity event in question.

5. What would you say your method is for giving each event its own uniqueness and originality?
This is one of those “I could tell you but then I’d have to kill you” questions… Basically, it’s simple: We were born to do this. The uniquely inspired ideas we come up for each client are a direct result of all our experience combined with bold ambition and an ability to tap into a constant stream of creativity whenever and wherever we choose. That and boat-load of confidence. Oh, and unicorns.
6. What was the most memorable event for you in 2012?
That would have to be a tie between the Night for Progress fundraising event at The Halifax Club and the Masqueraid at the Museum event at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic. A Night for Progress raised the roof and much-needed funds for the Progress Centre for Early Intervention, and the Masqueraid at the Museum raised funds for Bust A Move, a Breast Health fundraiser. The only thing I’d change about these events is the dates: they occurred within a week of each other (can you say busy)?
7. What current/future plans does Parlour Room Events have that have you excited?

Being named one of the ten CYBF's High Fliers has meant dedicated time devoted to improving and working on my business. What has us excited? EVERYTHING! Excited to grow, excited to hone some and expand on other business service offerings, to see what the next year has in store – 2013, bring it on!
8. In five years, where will we see Menna Riley and Parlour Room Events?

Untouchable. And maybe, just maybe, on vacation.

Creative Spotlight: Liam Hennessey of Applehead Studio

Hey Peeps,

This photograview is with friend and photographer Liam Hennessey, founder of Applehead Studios, who creates a beautiful and emotive variety of portrait, wedding, family and boudoir to name a few. Thanks for taking the time to chat with me Liam.

1. Your studio Applehead has a wide variety of Wedding/Portrait categories to choose from, I'm assuming that it would be an understatement to simply call the drive behind your work "creative"? Do you come up with these ideas yourself or with a team of people?
Applehead Studio is myself and my bad-ass assistant, Steph Camp.
A lot of these ideas come from day-to-day things that happen in my life, music that I listen to or just things that happen around me. It usually just starts as a small idea and after some collaborating with Steph and clients...manifests itself into a photograph of some sort.
A lot of photographers are now using the term 'creative portraits' and it kind of makes me laugh because I think all photography should be rooted in creativity.
There are too many people pushing the shutter button without reason or purpose behind it.

2. Your shooting style seems to dance between humorous and emotional, blending human and candid images with color and motion - telling memorable stories. What is your process or method when approaching a shoot and how do you keep it fresh and different from work with other clients?
I think it just stems from my desire to separate myself from the popular stuff.
Every time I think I find a group or organization to belong to...everything starts to look the same and then I don't want to be a part of it anymore.
The clients really dictate the feeling of the shoot. It's a lot like painting...if a client says 'here's a red marker and canvas, go nuts' then that's what we use. Another client might give us a can of spray paint and a sheet of aluminum...and so we go with that. Does this make sense?
The toughest thing has been trying to define my style...it's just what I do and you can call it whatever you like.

3. How would you say your work and style have evolved by being both a husband and father?
Oh man, it's crazy...being a Dad has opened up a whole new world for me.
It's rare if I'm not fighting back tears at a wedding when the father of the bride gives a speech.
I pull a lot of inspiration from the fun that we have as a family. The relationship and love that I have for my wife trickles into my work. We laugh a lot and compete a lot and fight a lot...it all finds a way into my work and translates into something humorous or intense or emotional.

4. You seem to do several location weddings, what makes your business a go-to for this type of job?
I'd like to think we offer something that appeals to clients that makes them want to have us shoot for them.
It might be our work or the way we interact with them...destination weddings are usually pretty intimate and involve a small group of close friends. It's different from the 150 people type wedding locally.
It's also pretty inspiring for us to shoot in different places. We've been everywhere from New Zealand to Cape Breton, and the best part of all of those weddings is the relationships we have with the clients that we got to spend several days with.

5. Applehead Studio has won several awards, voted by public opinion and demand. What is it like to get so prestigious in only 5 years? How have these awards promoted your business?
Ugh, I had a huge argument with Steph about this just last night. While its nice to be recognized, I am not a fan of awards. The only people I want to please are my clients and myself. I don't tend to look back at the work I've done...I just want to do better the next time.
I want my work to evoke some kind of emotion in people, good or bad.
All this fluffy bullshit on Facebook doesn't do anyone any good. I have a small group of friends who's opinions I really care about and I rely on them to grow. I have officially walked away from submitting images for awards and now leave those things up to Steph.
There are some incredible photographers in this city that don't have any awards and I don't think that takes away from the quality of what they offer. In the words of Eddie Vedder in his Grammy speech, "I don't know what this means. I don't think it means anything at all."

6. To get a little personal, my own mother survived colon cancer years ago and I know you can relate from a similar situation. Can you tell me what the CCS means to you and how Applehead Studios takes an active part in the fight against cancer?
Just reading this question sent chills up my spine.
I photographed by Mom's last chemo treatment because I was having a hard time with verbally communicating anything about it with anyone. It was a trip and a truly cathartic experience. Any time I can help out the CCS, I do.

7. Are there any recent/current/future projects on the go that have you excited?
Hell yes. The wedding season is a pretty methodical time. Lots of repetition. Weekend shooting and mid week editing. There's not much time for doing personal work but it seems like as soon as November rolls around my brain explodes and the 'off season' fills up.
I'm really interested in the overall improvement of the local photography industry and teaching. I also love the freedom to shoot whatever we want, whenever we want. I like the freedom to call up friends or clients and just say, "Hey I've got a crazy idea, wanna shoot with me?"
We've got a few tricks up our sleeve this winter for some value added things for our wedding clients for 2013 and I'm really excited to show it...but nothing is ready yet.

8. In five years, where will we find Liam Hennessey and Applehead Studio?
The greatest thing about this job is that it's a lot like walking in the woods with my girls...I have a general idea of where we're headed, but I usually let them take me wherever they want to go and enjoy the trip.
I'd like to see Steph eventually branch out and do some of her own shooting. I'd like to do more teaching, more travel weddings and with luck I'll be sitting at a computer answering more of your questions Michael! You're good for the community and I always enjoy doing these things with you. Thanks pal!

Creative Spotlight: Billie Chiasson

Hey Peeps,

My first photograview is with Billie Chiasson, a most talented photographer, based in Toronto, ON, who brings a timelessness to her work.

I've known Billie for a number of years and she is as wonderful a soul as she is creative.

My thanks to you Billie for taking the time out of your busy schedule to answer a few questions and letting me display some of your work here on my post.

1. You moved from Halifax to Toronto last year, what major changes has this move created, and how has that effected your work/opportunities for you?

This question requires me to take a step back and observe my surroundings, as I spend so much of my time shooting & have become accustomed to a busy lifestyle that I really haven't taken a look at what I have accomplished since moving to Toronto.
I guess in terms of my own career everything has changed since moving to Toronto. I'm fortunate to work with incredibly talented people in the industry here; makeup artists, models, hairstylists, stylists, assistants, editors & agencies. Moving to Toronto was one of the best decisions of my life and I feel as though I am moving towards my goals & increasing my skill level by working with such talented people.
I have several images on Vogue.it, have had editorials published & I also have a cover & spread coming out shortly. All of which I have accomplished since moving to Toronto. I still do a lot of collaborative as I feel as though I am in the process of building a name for myself & improving my own skill & art. At one point I made more money in Halifax then I do now in Toronto - however the resources for Fashion & Editorial are far more vast in the big city.
It just takes time and a lot of patience. I love every minute of it.

2. Your style has a simplistic beauty and your subjects seem to exude emotion and drama, would you consider yourself primarily fashion? Fine art? Emotive? Portrait?

I consider myself an artist & I don't feel as though my style fits into what would be considered "fashion", as I'm primarily focused on the emotion in my images instead of the actual clothing. That being said, I have shot editorials for clothing before & enjoy it. I also shoot A LOT of lingerie & testing for agencies here in Toronto. So maybe my style is a little bit of everything for the moment. I still feel as though I'm growing and developing as an artist.

3. What types of clients have you found attracted to your work?

Mostly agencies, models & the odd editor.

4. Do you primarily use ambient/available light with your subjects?

I do primarily use ambient or available light.

5. When working with a "green" model, how do you get the level of emotion that you accomplish with your other work?

I generally don't work with models that would be considered "green". I am very selective of the individuals that I do work with for collaborative because of how and what I shoot. Confidence and the ability to show emotions are a must! Also, my clients are generally agencies, so the models are more experienced and comfortable in front of the camera.
If I do have a paying client who is not as comfortable in front of the camera, I'm very good with direction as I know exactly how I want the images to be reflected for the client and for myself. I feel as though open communication during a shoot is a must - especially when your working with larger teams.
If you are confident in your skill and know what you want, you will be able to pull emotion out of a person no matter how shy they may be; it just takes a split second for them to let go & for you to capture it.

6. What is your process or method when creating a body of work?

There are so many different things that go into it & whenever your shooting you have no other choice but to think of these things all at once. It's the best adrenaline rush to know that something is perfectly exposed, that your capturing just the right essence and emotion while maintaining the integrity of the other artists working with you (Hair, Makeup, Clothing (If I'm shooting an editorial) ), all while taking into consideration the post-processing & knowing what you will do with the image afterwords. (Ok, I'm done drooling now).
All of these different things combined with the small details (ie.- the way you light something, how you move, your position in relation to the model, the time of day, your own feelings, how the model is feeling, how you thrive off the emotions and environment around you, etc.) plays so much into the signature of your work it's ridiculous. You do all this in 1/125 of a second or faster ;) Of course post-processing plays a part in your signature after you capture the image, however I'm a firm believer in "doing it right the first time", especially when it comes to lighting & knowing exactly how you want the image to be relayed.

7. You have been published several times, what is your approach when dealing with publications and what is it like working with their teams?

In comparison to my fellow photographers in Toronto, I really have not been published that much - however that will change ;) I will make sure of it.
I'm refining my own skills and coming up with concepts/ideas and approaching fantastically talented people to take part. (Super excited).
In terms of getting published and submitting for publishing, sometimes it is a hit or miss & it's always good to review a magazine and/or online publishing beforehand to see if your style is suitable to what they are looking for. (I made this mistake a couple of times) In terms of working with "their" teams, I have been incredibly fortunate that even if I do get published, regardless whether or not it's for print or online, that I get to select the team I work with and/or am provided options of individuals to choose from.
When it comes down to the success of the images for all parties involved there needs to be a good flow of energy. In the future, if I do shoot for larger clients I may not have this luxury, however it really is a matter of perspective & I don't think I would ever take on a client where I did not think I could work and/or do their publication justice. It just wouldn't be right to me, regardless of the money.

8. Are there any recent/current/future projects on the go that have you excited?

Of course there is! & I'm always excited. My excitement does not end!

9. In five years, where will we find Billie Chiasson?

It's hard to tell where I will be in 5 years as life can throw you a curve ball when you least expect it.
For Example: 4 years ago, I was not even a Photographer. ;)
I like to think that if you put out beautiful things into the world that people will take notice & hopefully be inspired by the beauty of it. In 5 years, I hope to continue to create something that would be considered "beautiful." If I happen to be working with larger clients and have taken on photography full time, then so be it.
I'm incredibly excited for my own life and very much look forward to what the next 5 years will bring me.

End of 2012 Treat: Creative Spotlights

Hey Peeps,

I wanted to do something similar - yet different from last years creative interviews.

If you don't remember, last year I sent questions to some of the most talented photographers in the industry in all different genres and posted them for New Year's.

This year is a little different.

I wanted a more in-depth look at the creatives that I approached, so after doing some research of each, I have sent them specific questions designed personally for the creative and their work.

Each post will be from a different and talented artist/creative/entrepreneur/etc in the industry and I hope will help you, the reader, to gain insight and direction in the field that inspires you.

Who Wants A Moustache Ride? (I'm going to regret that title...)

Hey Peeps,

I can bet you know at least one dude, be it your friend, brother, father, son or some other label that connects their life to yours.

I can also bet that at least one of those guys has suffered from a fight with prostate cancer or some form of mental health like depression and/or anxiety.

If not, well you do now. Me.

For an explanation of the moustache, keep reading.

I haven't had prostate cancer - thank goodness, and it may not look like it from the image above, but I have suffered from large struggles with anxiety and depression. Bottomless pits that left me in a world that was flat and colorless, without substance or meaning of any sort.

But I fought.

I still fight today.

And this month, I'm hoping you will join me in that fight by joining/donating Movember & Sons. They are a great organization in these struggles and I am proud to be part of a team of men who support it.

Our team, the League of Extraordinary Moustaches, is made up of over a dozen guys in my local area, led by our Team Captain and fellow photographer, Adam Graham.

We have raised several hundred dollars in just these few days and are continuing to collect more with your help.

Ally+Andrew

Hey Peeps,

This blog is dedicated to two people who have known each other for a long time. I've known them both for a long time too.

I've never seen a couple so comfortable with each other as Ally and Andrew. They are always there for each other, the perfect teammates, the perfect partnership.

Their wedding was beautiful and the weather worked out for us in the end. Both of their families were wonderful to meet and I even got to talk shop with Rob, a photography enthusiast, who has a great eye and love of photography.

The Steve Jobs Factor and You

Hey Peeps,

I've had a repeating conversation with a lot of people over the last few weeks relating to the new iPhone 5 release, Apple Inc. and Steve Jobs.

How does that relate to you? Plenty.

Job's first pet?

Two men, Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak, started Apple back in the days of dinosaurs and the coming invention of the Sony Walkman.


Don't even ask what this is.

Apple has primarily been a company of innovation and breaking rules. Taking the path least taken, at least according to their product designs. That's what made Apple unique, what makes their customers more than happy to stand in line overnight for the newest thing, to take mid to low-level customer service with a smile occasionally, to keep going back even if their product gets technical issues over and over.

Very different from most businesses.

Most don't have that type of loyalty.

But most don't have a clear message that resonates with their client-base.

Steve Wozniak is the man who knows how to set things up and get things done. He is the guy who can build the engine of functionality into a cause and clearly express the purpose behind a business.

Steve Jobs was a visionary. He was the message. He was a dreamer of change, of uniqueness, of nonconformity. Jobs was a man who went against blind repetitive, cookie-cutting business practices and product models.

In a time when the Motorola RAZR was incredibly popular, a flip-phone with over a dozen buttons and a half decent screen(for the time, I actually sold these, *sigh*), Jobs created the iPhone - a full screen/no flip phone with a single button.

Totally against the direction things were going.

But look at us now.

Every major manufacturer is copying - or at least emulating that same design years later.

Sadly, Apple is now one of them.

At present day, we are looking at the Apple iPhone 5 and I wonder if it would have even existed if Steve Jobs were still alive.

I can't believe it would.

I can see Jobs totally against it for so many reasons; its repetitive design and lack of originality; the fact that the only major design changes are things like slightly altered software and a new port design that can only frustrate customers because of needed upgrades to accessories.

Is there really a huge, fundamental difference in the products below?

Is Apple dropping the ball here? Have they forgot the vision of Jobs? Have they lost the Steve Jobs factor?

I've wondered about this since Jobs passed, and from what I've seen the corporation is leaning towards what most businesses do; turning their unique product/service into a commodity - aka. corporate suicide.

If they don't take what they are doing and realign it with the vision of why Apple exists in the first place, their competition will soon eat them alive.

It devalues their products, lowers customer loyalty and breeds a feeling of desperation.

Speaking of desperation, have you noticed how many lawsuits they have with their competitors? Why? Did Jobs go after his competitors over miniscule things like rounded corners? Did he care?

Nope. He had better things to do, like come up with the next greatest product that everyone wished they invented. He had innovations to produce and dreams to make reality, and that's what made Apple great.

What would Apple be producing now if Jobs were alive?

Well, starting out as a computer company, delving into mp3 players and then cell phones, I can only imagine they would push into other, high risk industries.

Maybe the car manufacturing industry, the iDrive or iRoll?(Copyright Michael Carty) Does it come with OnStar or maybe they designed their own version - iLost? Universal ports? Hybrid or 100% Electric? Solar power option? High end battery life? How many die-hard Apple customers would HAVE to have one? How many Apple employees would get one and double as free advertising? What unique body designs would it have?

It sounds funny, but it's true. Jobs was the type to do something like this, take something normal and make it completely different, unique and hip. Go against the direction everyone's heading and make his own path with it.

Again, it doesn't seem like that is Apple's current direction. It sounds like they want to push a tonne of hype on a product that is only superficially different from one they have previously produced. That they are commoditizing(real word?) their products and business and losing the message behind their purpose. They are going from,"I do it my way." to "Let's make some money."

So finally what does this have to do with you?

Is your purpose resonant with your actions? With your business practices? Customer service? Product designs? Workflow? Do you have the (insert your name here) factor?

Last week I wrote on my FB page:

"I shoot photography because..." is a horrible way to describe the "Why" behind your work. Try "I feel/believe/want to _______________________________________, and I express this through my photography.", and you will truly find your path.

This is not only exclusive to photography, but for every business that wants to be unique, unhampered by external forces and for individuals who want to remember why they do what they do and have a consistently clear image of their direction - which can be incredibly difficult in all of the minutiae of doing business.

So what do you believe? What do you feel? What do you want to say and what do you do to express it?

Gotta Love My Smart Mercedes

Hey Peeps,

I had quite the busy - yet enjoyable weekend.

Shooting the new 100% electric Mercedes-Benz Smart was so much fun, I actually think it was because of the relaxed and light-hearted people I had the pleasure to work with.

Also luck was on my side.

I was trusted to know what I was doing - which I do. Therefore I was able to focus at the job at hand and come up with some sweet, clean and creative images of these vehicles.

Thank you to everyone involved, especially Jennifer Doll, founder of Girls of Glam, who was my contact in this project.

Wharf Rat Rally 2012: My First Vending Experience

Hey Peeps,

I don't know if a lot of you have ever been a vendor for an event like the Wharf Rat Rally, you know, sell cotton candy or popcorn or samurai swords.

It may not sound very glamorous, probably because it's not.

It's hot and muggy, the air is filled with engine exhaust and noise of all sorts and the hours are long.

It was one of the most crucial learning experiences I have ever had and I can't wait to do it again next year.

The first challenge was to find a way to incorporate my photography into the rally in such a way that my product was quick to produce and purchase but also unique in such a way that it would draw more clients.

HDR. High Dynamic Range.

You have all seen HDR images before, even if you didn't know what it was called.

Basically several images are shot of a subject at different exposure levels and through the power of science and creativity, blended into a single image that incorporates all of the details from the originals.

This is one that I shot for a prize in the Rally Races for Timothée Richard of Bobber Boyz/Mad Squirrel:

We were set up with the bay and wharf as our backdrop.

I was lucky enough to get a few family members and their friends to come out a few weeks before and use their bikes as examples that I could show clients.

I had found after a while that I had lost sight of the underlying reason why I was vending this year.

Not money, no that helps but wasn't my true reason - my "why".

My "why" in my business is a reflection of what photography does for me personally, it gives me a sense of freedom in my life and I needed to instill that into my booth and how it interacted with the public.

Once I had lost sight of that, I realized that I was stressing over sales and money so that I could get to relax and enjoy myself.

That was sooooo backwards.

I told my friend and fellow photographer Kitrin Jeffrey, who was assisting me with this vending process day-in and day-out, that I needed to think more like a photographer, more of my "why", my freedom, my reason for everything.

I said,"What would someone like Chase Jarvis(whom I consider one of the Patron Saints of Photography) do in a situation like this? Would he constantly be going over processes like how to greet a client? How to overcome objections? How to do a million different things a million different ways? No, we did all of this when we planned this event. That work is done. Chase Jarvis wouldn't worry about the business at this point, he would focus on the moment at hand. He would enjoy the day, the bikes, the rally itself and then the business would thrive. I really need a ring or bracelet that says 'WWCJD?'."

And that's when it happened.

I took my camera out of its bag and started shooting "Random WRR Bike Encounters". I would post them on FB and have fun doing it too! My mind wasn't stuck in the administration department while the festivities were going all around me - I was a part of the fun!!

The side-effect?

We started getting sales.
Numbers on my FB Fanpage soared.
Strangers that have never heard of me would tell me that they recognized me and my work from these randoms.
I got a gleaming spot on the local radio station that sounded like a client testimonial.
I stopped stressing and had fun.

That last one isn't quantifiable, but believe me, it is something you can totally feel.

I learned a tonne, worked my ass off, met a lot of people and am more than prepared for next year's partying - scheduling appointments in February. :D

New Model: Alex McBride

Hey Peeps,

So the other day I had the great fortune of shooting with someone that I think could really make a name for herself in the industry: Alex McBride.

She's young, funny, talented and smart. A great combination to have when trying to survive and thrive in any business. Especially since her interest is on the other side of the camera, yes, she likes to shoot photography too.

Beth+Alex aka: The Frenchys Wedding

Hey Peeps,

I know most of you won't know what I'm talking about since this is worldwide and all, but those of you from the Maritimes, and even those of you who have visited, know of the second-hand clothing store called Guy's Frenchys.

You may have even seen something about it on the news, in the newspapers, on Facebook, etc etc etc.

The reason that is is because a great couple, Beth and Alex, had planned their wedding there. It wasn't on purpose at first. In the beginning, they were only shopping there for a few things for the event.

Then it started to roll.

Eventually everything from the groomsmens suits to the brides dress and flowers were all purchase at - you guessed it: Frenchys.

So the next step was to ask Guy Frenchy himself for his blessing in conducting the event in his store located in our hometown of Digby.

Guy was exstatic.

Bins were moved, decorations were put up and advertisements were placed in every Frenchys store in the Maritimes advertising the first wedding ever performed in the business's history.

Now I had a great view as things developed over these several months. Not just because I was the photographer covering the event, but because I have known Alex for years.

Just want to say, Beth and Alex are perfect for each other. They are exactly as in love with one another and believe in that love in real life as you see them during an interview.

So without further ado, and to prevent regaling you on my later-night karaoke skills that evening, I give you: Beth+Alex.

Labs, Prints & Products: Q&A with Allen Sutherland of Atlantic Photo Supply

I think one of the most important things - and the most overlooked, in photography has to do with labs.

Most new photographers stick with giving/selling their digital images and leave a lot of cash, customer service and free marketing on the table.

I had the great fortune of asking Allen Sutherland of Atlantic Photo Supply a few questions from his point of view on the importance of labs in today's digitized age.

Michael: How important are physical prints/products in a photography business?

Allen: In the digital age, prints are still something physical and tangible that stand visible through time. Prints and products can be considered a value add to the Artist,always there for their client to see. The Photographer - to be successful, should be like any business; always willing to add new products to their wagon. The saying goes, you can't sell with a empty wagon.

Michael:What sets APS apart from other labs?

Allen: I think the big thing that sets APS apart is the dedication of the staff. I often look at the way they try to resolve problems. Like any human, they are capable of making mistakes. The difference with my coworkers is that they learn from that and often put procedures in place to try and prevent it from happening again. We have the same equipment as many labs, but a whole set of different procedures that help keep the quality and service high.

Michael: What would you say contributes to the success of APS when other vendors have slipped away?

Allen: I hate to repeat myself, but the success of APS has a lot to do with the last question. On top of our people, we also practice strict accounting and purchasing principals. Buying smart and growing at a pace that keeps the bottom line in the black instead of the red. Being involved with the community at large is important as well. Just because you have been in business since 1942 does not give you the right to ignore how you survived.

Michael: What should a photographer initially look for in a lab?

Allen: I think quality service first. Then I would also look at the products they offer. Price would be my last choice.

Michael: What are the majority of problems that photographers bring to you to solve?

Allen: The biggest problems go straight to color management. A lot of people have difficulty getting files to look the same on their monitor as they do in print. My job is often to look deeper into their workflow to try and resolve those issues.

Michael: Do you find the photographers who utilize printing services gain more work and success than ones who exclusively use digital means?

Allen: I think the true success of any photographer is how well he markets his talent. Many artists are very creative but poor on the marketing and fiscal discipline side. Prints are part of a product offering. How you weave them into your business plan will determine the success. Like any business, you get back what you put into it.

Michael: You have recently moved locations last month, can you tell me a little bit about that and how this will effect the photography community?

Allen: We are almost complete in our move. Our new store on Brownlow in Dartmouth will open September 10th. The big thing about the expansion for the lab is more efficiency, Everything on one floor, instead of 2 and 1/2. All departments from front to back have a better work space and better climate control. Having a more efficient lab helps with service and quality. Having two locations helps to serve our community better from a physical perspective. A lot of our out of town clients don't have to fight traffic to get to our Dartmouth store. We are able to have more inventory because we have more storage. New products and services. Someone has to keep Henry's in check.

Michael: Is there any pertinent knowledge you believe photographers should be aware of regarding prints, labs, etc?

Allen: I say to everyone new and old in the business: take time to understand the basic concepts of photography. The golden triangle, so to speak. Once you conquered that then work with your lab on the color side of things. Build a relationship. Take time to get to know them. Do your home work. Take a course and go to seminars.

My Run-In With Backroads

Hey Peeps,

It has been quite busy this past week and continues to be in the coming one, I was scouting out the Bear River Vineyard, photos below:

I noticed a van and a load of bicyclers at the vineyard. The van was labelled,"Backroads: The Worlds #1 Active Travel Company".

Needless to say, I was intrigued.

I'm a runner at heart but I got a sense that bicycling was similar in the nature of comraderie and non-competitiveness.

I grabbed my camera and started shooting while asking a few of these nice people about Backroads and bicycling in general. They told me that they were from all over, Toronto, Pensilvania, Oklahoma just to name a few. They were also different groups, some married, some single, some friends, some parents and adult children. It was impressive and uplifting to see so many different people from different walks of life come together in an activity that was both beneficial to their health and connected a variety of minds.

Gary and I hit it off right away. He is a photography enthusiast and carries his Canon 5D MkIII - yes, the MkIII - and a 28-300mm lens with him as he rides. I offered to give him my cam and everything in my gear bag for it, but Gary is a smart man, and refused my offer. :( Next time Gary, next time.

Amy and Eric are husband and wife. They are a sweet couple who seem to have a real partner/team atmosphere about them which can only enhance their cycling and their marriage.

Among other things, they told me that this is the 4th of their 6 day ride through Nova Scotia, which started in Halifax, NS. That they all enjoy the different scenes of beauty, cultures, foods and friendships they encounter and make while on their trek.

It all sounded so similar to running to me - but with wheels, and much farther(for the most part), I realized that it was the social activity in general that brought out all of the goodness in these people and not just the specific activity itself.

Well their trip has been over for a few days now and most are back home, off on another ride or relaxing on the rest of their vacations.

I hope to see them again next year.

Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night

Hey Peeps,

You have no doubt heard this villanelle, it is considered to be among the finest works by Welsh poet Dylan Thomas.

I've always loved his writing and I find it is appropriate for this post.

It's expressive idea is the desire and even need to fight with all of one's life against the spectre of death.

That no matter what walk of life we come from, that shadow is always present and close at hand.

That it is a bond we all share as human beings and from which we should struggle against it regardless of the futility.

There is another shadow that lurks in the hearts of creatives. A fear, a doubt, a frustrated apathy that makes one feel like a sham, a fake and an untalented poser.

If you have every tried to be creative, especially for a living, you have felt this.

I have felt this. BIG TIME.

I am not naive enough to believe that this feeling will ever pass permanently. It is a major element towards keeping the truly determined creatives in the game while pushing the less ambitious to other venues.

It is a scary, daunting, lonely and hopeless feeling in it's full form.

It can cripple a creatives mind completely.

It has no conscious. It has no morality. It is an act of nature with no more malice for you than it does remorse for what it does to you.

But I can promise you one thing.

If you stay in the game, if you keep learning, keep practicing, keep working at your craft.

I promise you will be evolving creatively.

I can't promise that you will be rich or famous or recognized by your peers. I can't promise that you will be greeted on the streets by friends and fans for your outstanding work or offered multi-international deals from the biggest conglomerates to work with the brightest stars.

I will promise that you will be doing what you love.

I will promise that you will get better and better at it.

I will promise you that when that doubt slips into your mind, it's okay to take some time off.

Go lie down, watch some tv, whatever, because you are putting your time in when it counts.

But always get back to it, it whatever form or scale you can.

Keep doing this and I promise that you will be the creative you want to be within if not without.

You are working it out. You are learning your craft. You are making it your own.

Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rage at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Are You Touching All Of Your Touchpoints? Unrated Version

Hey Peeps,

I'm sure you have all heard the term touchpoints, and if you haven't - well get to it already!

The simplest definition for a touchpoint: where your clients and business connect, and having a business means you have them: lots of them.

Here are just a few:

email
phone number
website
business card
face-to-face
pricing
workflow
studio
office
blog

Each of them should be well thought out in design, congruent with each others design and highly effective towards inviting and welcoming potential clients into your business.

And yes, things like pricing and face-to-face are touchpoints to your business. They are just two of the many contacts that your clients have with you and your business.

You have to understand that every one of your touchpoints is a message to your clients about who you are, what you do and where you fit in to their needs. Not only that, but the message also tells your clients where they fit in with your business.

If you think this list is a lot to go over, you're right. Yet this is a relatively small list and is only a summary of what you will actually cover.

Let me show you.

You build a website. Check. You have a welcome page, some of your work, contact info, maybe some fun music playing and a slideshow of your favorite work.

Great! You're done with that touchpoint right? WRONG.

How did you design it to create the message you are trying to convey? You must go over things like colors used, branding, presentation, navigation, product placement, welcome and a minutiae of other information that is crucial - but worth it.

My website has bothered me in the past. Something was always missing until I sat down and actually started asking myself the right questions about this important touchpoint(Sidenote: All touchpoints are important).

First I corrected the color scheme. My branding colors are white, black and vibrant green. I knew that I liked the green because it was vibrant but I didn't want the site to come off too "green & grey" feeling, so I decided right away that other colors would eventually be used and those other accented colors would have to be as vibrant as the green to keep the style and feel the same.

That's when I looked at my slideshow. The website has a built-in slideshow at the top. Normally I would put in some of my best work, but after watching the images slide by I realized that there was subject matter there that I was no longer looking to shoot - and therefore irrelevant to the slideshow.

I decided to remove all of the slideshow images and do something different.

Realizing that my slideshow was a touchpoint within a touchpoint (confused yet?), I decided that I wanted to use it to show my clients specific products in an attractive way without directing them to a sales pitch. Luckily, I know Photoshop quite well and within a few minutes I had 3 different images for my slideshow (so far) that show work from each of my relevant genres and display them within multiple products on consistently vibrant colored backgrounds.

How did I feel after these subtle - yet crucial changes?

FAN-DAN-TASTIC!

It's true! I haven't felt this good about the stability and focus of my website in a long time. Of course it isn't perfect, but it is getting there and I can actually feel the change of moving forward as I go through these steps.

One great thing is that when my site needs an update, I won't be floundering on which direction to go with it because I know which questions to ask myself.

Oh, and there was another advantage to this - it made me more creatively inventive.

Right after the update, I began to think of an image that I had shot earlier in the year. It had always reminded me of the story of Dorian Gray.

So I took that image and created a movie poster out of it - fun and creative! Exactly why I got into this business!!

So check out your touchpoints. Methodically. Patiently. Let them wax over your mind for a while until you can use them best to your advantage and then execute.

You Lost Me With The Ramble

Hey Peeps,

I ramble.

Yes, I do.

You know it and I know it. I can't help it - sometimes.

Trying to get out all the information to each other, be it family, friends or clients is not always the best way to get your message across.

Something gets lost in the process, it's what's called: their attention.

You lose their interest and eventually become a sound machine where nothing is retained in the mind of your audience.

Sure, some people need more than a simple, rounded message. But if they need more info, they will tend to ask for it.

Otherwise, don't waste your breath and their time.

So next time you have an idea for a promotion, or a meeting or whatever, take ALL your minutiae and condense it down into the blocks of specific - yet simplified, messages that you are trying to get across.

Keep it Simple - Keep it Specific.

I think I've heard that somewhere before, and it's a good idea to remember it from time to time.

NO I DON'T: Getting Things Done By Not Doing What Doesn't

Hey Peeps,

I hate wasting time. You do too.

I won't even ask - it's pretty much a given.

If you're going to say,"Hey Mike, I love wasting time." Well you're an idiot and we should devour your lifeforce to distribute amongst the rest of us.

Moving away from the darkside now.

I know you find that when working on something important, work, play, crosswords, nuclear reactor in your basement, etc, other things tend to come up.

Distractions and interruptions.

Your spouse, kids, favorite TV show, best friend, mother, in-laws, siblings, boss, employees - I could do this all day.

But what about the least obvious and yet most insidious things of all?

The thing you are trying to work on.

I'm as serious as a heart attack here, but let me state that this is mostly found during work.

We all try to get as much going on as we can being business owners - and if you are an independently, starving photographer, well you are a business owner believe it or not.

This overwhelms and most times burns us out.

Which sucks.

If we are done in, we can't work. Which is what this is all about right?

So what should you not do?

Let's answer that with a story:

I had a call from my mother yesterday to donate something in a silent auction for a community group she is a part of.

She wanted a few photos, but what does that get me? Nothing. No new clients, no income, nada.

Someone would bid and win the images and put them somewhere on a wall or in a basement or give them as gifts to someone else who would put them on a wall or in a basement, etc, etc, etc

So I decided to give away a portrait sitting instead.

This gives the winning bidder incentive to come into my studio, meet me, discus photo options, print sales, CD/DVD purchases, creating a walking, talking billboard telling their friends about my business while still making me money.

Good idea right?

When I started to explain some of the in's-and-out's of connecting and product ordering with her, she found some things restrictive to more elderly and/or less web educated clients,"You have to cater to everybody right?"

My flat out response,"No, I don't."

That's the thing, I don't want to cater to everyone.

I don't want to treat every person like they are my ideal client.

I want to treat my ideal client as my ideal client.

I don't - and you don't - need to make everyone on the planet a paying client. That would be insane. But if you focus on your ideal client, and what they are about, you can make all of your clients your ideal client.

So no, I will not have a million ways of contacting me(email, phone, carrier pigeon, locomotive, etc), instead I have the ones that serve me and my ideal clients.

Just like I will not have a million different products to sell my clients - how could you keep them all in your head and still come across with the confidence of knowing what you are talking about?

I find my ideal client, I learn what they are about - everything. I cater to that. Everything else that I do is for my own creative expression.

And everything after that is garbage.

I won't do it.

It is a waste of time, energy and happiness that could better be used on things that matter.

My First Ever Prom Sessions: SMBA

I've never done prom sessions before.

Believe it.

Weddings, commercial products, families, kids, babies, portraits, fashion, events, I have done.

But never proms.

Well this year I actually got to shoot prom sessions for a few graduates of Saint Mary's Bay Academy just outside of Weymouth, NS.

I had a blast.

Model Shoot: Spencer Robertson

Maybe it's just me, but I find it awfully hard to find male models in this industry.

I'm sure that I'm wrong, I'm sure there are lots of male models out there saying,"Michael! Here I am! Why don't you take my photos?" And why would they say that?

Because it is hard to find male models in this industry, so it should be easy to find the few who exist.

Maybe it's my location. Maybe there is just such a huge overflow of female models in the industry that it makes the number of males seem non-existent. I don't know, but what I do know is that I got to shoot with an extremely determined and fun male model earlier this month, Spencer Robertson.

You may have seen my work with Spencer in a previous post here.

Spencer isn't your average teenage model. Although he is energetic, active, tall, funny and smart, he surprises me with little things. For one, until I took his photo with my phone during lunch, he didn't know what Instagram was.

I was floored.

Not because I think everyone should use Instagram - because I don't - but because I believed in the usual stereotype that all teens were plugged into their phones and the countless apps they can have.

And then, today, while writing this post, he surprised me again by telling me with a laugh that he didn't know how to send me his FB fanpage link.

Que? No hablo Facebook?

I actually find this refreshing in, well, anyone I guess. He's not always plugged in, which not only makes him a better model to interact with but also a better person. He hasn't slipped into that socially inept category that is so easy for us to fall into when we spend all of our time with our laptops, cell phones, smart phones, devices, etc.

So back to Spencer.

We shot in several locations - including instudio, and spanning from the morning until late afternoon.

We even got permission to use someones sailboat for our marina location, which was fun and nerve-racking at once(ever pass $2000+ worth of gear over salt water while trying to balance with the waves?)

Model Shoot: Quincie

Hey Peeps,

This shoot was a long time coming.

Quincie and I have been trying to schedule a shoot since as far back as January, I think - it's been that long.

Finally we have been able to shoot together and it went fantastic!!

She was backlit by the sun for most of the shots and my 580EXII was the mainlight that balanced the shot. The other images were done in the shade of the barn where we were shooting and my flash worked as main. I also used my homemade beauty dish with all of the shots(DIY beauty dish post here and here).

So here is a taste of my Quincie shoot:

I find Quincie has a "young Farrah Fawcett" look to her in some of these shots, I had a great time and can't wait to shoot with her again! Thx Quincie!!

You Peaked In High School

Hey Peeps,

You've probably heard this phrase before. On TV, in the movies or maybe in real live either being said(hopefully not to you) or saying it yourself to someone else.

The thing is a lot of people "peak" in high school, or college or in their first few years in the working world. The problem is that they tend to sink into this depressing and utterly black void of mediocrity and complacency from which they usually never return.

They complain about their current situations; the boss on their back; the screaming kids; the complaining spouse; the home that has a million things that need getting done but there's never any time - you know, life.

I'm not going to tell you how to time manage your household chores.

Or how to better kiss your bosses ass.

Or how to muzzle your children.

Or even how to appease your spouse(you SHOULD know how to do most of these things).

I'm going to tell you that like most things in life there are peaks and troughs. Unbeknownst to most, the power to control this wave ride is mostly up to you. The key is to try and strive to peak at least once a day.

Let me tell you, I have had my share of troughs - years of them.

There was a good chance I wouldn't have came back from them either.

But through a slow and steady progression I fight my way back(yes I am still fighting) to my "peak-i-ness"(trademarked), in work, at home and within myself.

No matter what shit happens in your day, you always have the ability to peak again and again. I peak in my work after a great shoot with the fantastic images I capture. I peak with my son when I take a break to play outside on our lawn. I peak in my marriage when I drop the little guy off with grandma and take my wife on a shopping trip.

Sure these don't sound like the peaks that I had in high school.

But I'm not in high school anymore. Are you?

The difference is that my peaks are higher than I ever could have imagined and they will last me a lifetime of memories.

So fuck peaking in high school - that's for losers, posers, haters and assholes.

PEAK EVERY DAY.

Put that in your mantra and say it.

BMO Hockey Heroes Weekend 2012

Hey Peeps,

Just got back from a great weekend in Halifax, NS covering the BMO Hockey Heroes Weekend with my buddy and second sniper Adam Graham.

It was fun reconnecting to some of the people who I worked with and the NHL Alums that I worked with on last years event, which was spectacular and did a great job of raising funds for the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia. We also had fun meeting new people involved in the event and hope to work with them all again soon.

So, how was the weekend itself?

Answer: Fan-dan-tastic!

After getting to my place Friday morning, Adam and I made sure we had all the gear we needed and piled into my car for the 3 hour drive to Halifax.

We did the usual photographer thing on trips right? We talked shop.

Who better to talk shop with than another photog?

Gear - Lighting - Business - Work/Life Juggling - Editing - Prints - Aesthetics, we went through the entire gauntlet.

A pit-stop in New Minas and an hour later we were pulling into the Westin Nova Scotian, unloaded our gear and set up our workstation before preparing ourselves for the first nights events.

After the setup was completed, we went downstairs to the banquet hall where we met up with Jane Davies and Annette LeBlanc, Vice President and event coordinator from ZedEvents respectively and our contacts for Hockey Heroes, to get any last minute information we may need.

Our NHL Alumni this year were: Ray Bourque, Paul Coffey, Claude Lemieux, Guy Carbonneau, Marty McSorley, Russ Courtnall, Gary Leeman, Al Iafrate, Rick Middleton, Gaston Gingras, Kevin Maguire, Todd Warriner, Todd Harvey, Ken Belanger, Gilbert Dionne and Alain Cote.

Needless to say, that first night was fun.

We got a lot off of our shoot list ahead of schedule, the clients affiliates were overly happy of the job we did and everyone was having a great time.

Items were auctioned off to the fans for fundraising and the Alumni were getting into the swing of things.

There was a lot of people there, the brews were flowing and spirits were high.

What a great banquet before the games begin!!

Saturday, we shot the teams on the ice and caught some great vid footage that will be posted at a later date, along with some wonderful action stills of gameplay:

Did I mention this was also a family event? Oh yes, tonnes of kids of all ages came out to see the stars, grab some autographs and photos and enjoy the weekend!

Todd Warriner was gracious enough to let Adam strap his new GoPro cam to his helmet during gameplay and got us some sweet footage.

The event also had a Beard-o-Thon for fundraising...

as you can see there were many participants, lol.

Overall it was a fantastic success, we shot tonnes of images, Adam captured a lot of great footage of which we are sifting through currently and the clients, both ZedEvents and the Heart and Stroke Foundation were very happy with the work done.

Can't wait to do it again next year!!
