This morning I slept in for the first time in a long time. When I woke, I spent a little time on my phone checking the news and email. I got up to start picking up the apartment when my phone vibrated and let me know I got a message.

A friend texted me to let me know the sky was cool looking. Semi-awake, I grabbed my gear and went to the roof. These are the results.

Yesterday evening I went to the roof to shoot the sunset. The clouds and the light were beautiful and the weather was starting to cool off. At the time I remember thinking to myself that the shape of the sun looked a little odd, but I didn’t give it that much thought.

I wrapped up the photos, went and grabbed some food and some ice cream, then came back in time to try to shoot the lightning storm that was approaching.

Heading back to the roof, I set up and tried to photograph the lightning storm that was approaching. Things were going slow and not much was happening, so I decided to see what was going on in Chicago.

One of the first things I noticed is that people were posting partial eclipse photos that had occurred about an hour ago.

Shit.

I had forgotten all about the eclipse because I read it would be more prominent in the western states. Since I was using the same memory card from earlier in the day, I flipped through the photos and found out that the “odd shape” I noticed was indeed the partial eclipse.

If I would have realized this at the time, I would have switched lenses.

Oh well…

With NATO in town and work mandating that we work from home, I decided a better use of this beautiful Friday would be spent not working. Today as my day off, I walked around Lincoln Park with my macro gear and smelled the flowers for awhile.
