Drinking Water Can Lower Your Children’s IQ. Isn’t that a scary thought? For many years, doctors and dentists have recommended that children drink fluoridated water to reduce their risk of cavities. Now, scientists tell us that fluoride may actually be toxic to our children.

First, the EPA and the Department of Health and Human Resources actually want the government to reduce the amount of fluoride added to drinking water. This recommendation is based on the fact that there have been an increasing number of cases of children having fluorosis (Young, 2011).

Fluorosis is a dental condition where too much fluoride causes white streaks and spotting on children’s teeth.
The story only gets worse with a recent analysis of the effects of fluoride on Chinese children. Two seventy individual studies were reviewed. The combined results of these studies strongly indicate that fluoride can harm a child’s mental development — as indicated by reduced IQ scores (Choi & Grandjean, 2012).

So, governments add fluoride to drinking water to promote dental health. But many health professionals have noted that fluoride is actually having adverse effects on children’s teeth. Now, the latest research shows that children who take in large amounts of fluoride through drinking water have lower IQs.

I don’t know about you, but every time I look at my kitchen faucet, I can’ help but think about the dangers of fluoride. Now, besides routinely double-checking my water filters to make sure they effectively filter fluoride, I will definitely continue to stop our dentist from putting this toxin on our children’s teeth. And fluoridated toothpaste is completely banned from my home.

Depending on the severity of the thyroid hormone deficiency, the signs and symptoms of hypothyroidism in both men and women may vary. How Well Does the Flu Vaccine Work?

While everyone seems to be recommending that we all get flu vaccines this winter, the evidence remains scant. The prestigious Cochrane Collaboration as recently reviewed the science behind our flu vaccine recommendations for well adults. According to these experts, the scientific studies show only minor benefits and rare but very serious side effects (Guillain-Barre Syndrome) when flu shots are given to well adults.

“Influenza vaccines have a modest effect in reducing influenza symptoms and working days lost. There is no evidence that they affect complications, such as pneumonia, or transmission”. …(vaccines) caused local harms and an estimated 1.6 additional cases of Guillain-Barré Syndrome per million vaccinations”.Jefferson T, Di Pietrantonj C et. al. (1999)

Then it actually gets worse. These mainstream scientific researchers point out that the deck appears to be stacked to make flu vaccines look good. In other words, the meager benefits noted above may be an exaggeration and the harms may be understated. Below is the Jefferson T and Di Pietrantonj ‘s group’s warning regarding the poor qualit, the evidence and the way it has been handled

“WARNING: … 15 out of 36 trials funded by industry (four had no funding declaration)”. “The review showed that reliable evidence on influenza vaccines is thin but there is evidence of widespread manipulation of conclusions and spurious notoriety of the studies. The content and conclusions of this review should be interpreted in light of this finding”.

Maybe all of the experts are right and we should all be getting flu shots, but it sure would be nice if they had some science to back up their recommendations.

Hypothyroidism and Adrenal Insufficiency

Hi, I’m Dr. Michael Doyle. I’d like to talk to you for a minute about two of the most important substances in the human body — thyroid hormone and cortisol. These two hormones are the foundation of human metabolism and are as important to your health as gasoline and oil are to your car.

Thyroid hormone actually refers to four hormones made by the thyroid gland. I think of thyroid hormones as hormones as the dimmer switch on human metabolism. They literally go into every single cell in your body, including adrenal glands, to boost metabolism. The most common problem with the thyroid is low thyroid function, also called hypothyroidism. The symptoms of hypothyroidism are widespread and extremely varied. They range from fatigue, low temperature, depression, weight gain, and hair loss to high blood pressure, high cholesterol, early heart disease and much more.

Your adrenal glands also make a variety of hormones. The most important of these is called cortisol. Contrary to popular opinion, this natural form of cortisone is not an evil substance that makes you fat. In fact, cortisol is a crucial hormone that allows your body to adapt to stress, to produce energy and to control inflammation. Cortisol, also known as hydrocortisone, is also necessary for maintaining normal thyroid function.

Situations that might require increased cortisol include infections, injuries and emotional stresses. Or even breathing. That’s right, cortisol is so important that a person who completely stops making it will die within a couple of days. Fortunately, complete failure to make cortisol is pretty rare. But milder deficiencies of cortisol appear to be much more common. This condition is often called adrenal insufficiency, and in certain severe cases it is called, Addison’s Disease. Common symptoms of adrenal insufficiency include fatigue, low blood pressure, dizziness, palpitations and anxiety. Since cortisol helps control inflammation, low cortisol also appears to contribute to allergies and autoimmune diseases.

We’ve known how to treat low thyroid for more than one hundred years and we’ve understood cortisol treatment for over half a century. Unfortunately it sometimes seems as if this is all but forgotten. Proper treatment of these conditions requires restoring and maintaining a healthy balance of both thyroid and adrenal hormones. In general, the best way to do this is to treat these shortages by simply replacing what is actually missing. That is, by using bio-identical thyroid and cortisol to a restore healthy levels of these hormones.

The bottom line is that hypothyroidism and adrenal insufficiency are common, important and highly treatable problems. Myers Cocktail – Intravenous (IV) Therapy

I first learned about the intravenous (IV) “Myers cocktail” ten years ago while studying with Dr. Jacob Teitelbaum. According to Dr. T., the Myers cocktail was a highly effective way to help patients get well and feel better. He did not offer a lot of evidence beyond his patients’ experience and reports from other doctors, so my natural skepticism took over and I decided to wait and see.

Since then, many patients have asked me for this treatment, reporting that the Myers cocktail had made them feel much better. Meanwhile, Dr. T. and other leading alternative physicians such as Dr. Alan Gaby and Dr. Jonathan Wright continued to report great results and excellent safety with the Myers cocktail.

What finally convinced me was a study by researchers at Yale. It was a placebo-controlled pilot study of Myers cocktail treatment for fibromyalgia. The placebo group improved, but the Myers cocktail patients had consistently better results. These improvements were dramatic and mirrored the results that my patients, mentors and colleagues had described to me over and over. The researchers also found no serious side effects.

The Myers cocktail is a mixture of essential nutrients given by IV. It usually contains a combination of magnesium, calcium, B vitamins, and vitamin C. The ingredients are adjusted to suit each patient’s individual needs. Many patients have found it highly effective in reducing a variety of troubling symptoms including fatigue, headaches, muscle, pain brain fog and much more.

Finally, I decided to move forward with an IV nutrition program. I have been lucky enough to find an exceptionally skilled and experienced nurse to help me run this program and administer these treatments. Natural Treatments for ADHD

Is your son unable to pay attention to details or easily distracted? Does he fidget and squirm, or seem hyperactive? Does your daughter have difficulty following through with instructions in school or at home? Perhaps she seems not to listen even when spoken to? Do you know an adult with these symptoms? These problems can occur in any healthy person, but they can also be symptoms of Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). If these problems become troubling enough, a doctor or teacher may recommend that your child (self, or spouse…) get medically evaluated and treated. Once the diagnosis of ADHD (previously known only as ADD, or Attention Deficit Disorder) is made, stimulant medications are usually prescribed to help the patient focus. While stimulant medications can aid in controlling symptoms, they have many potential side effects.

According to WebMD.com, one of the most common stimulant medications for ADHD has the following potential side effects: loss of appetite, weight loss, dry mouth, stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, headache, diarrhea, fever, agitation, mood swings, depression, abnormal thoughts, outbursts of words/sounds, chest pain, fainting, irregular heartbeat, seizures, extreme tiredness, blurred vision, slurred speech, confusion, and allergic reactions leading to rash, itching, swelling, and trouble breathing. Pretty scary.

There are also “non-stimulating” drugs for ADHD, but they don’t appear to be much safer. WebMD.com’s list of side effects includes: vomiting, constipation, fatigue, dizziness, insomnia, mood changes, weight loss, fast or irregular heartbeat, fainting, heart attack, stroke and more.

Fortunately, most children do not suffer severe side effects from ADHD medications. Some even do fairly well and are able to function better at home and school. But are these medicines the best way to treat ADHD? No one is certain, but sincerely I doubt it.

I believe that the best way to address most medical conditions is to look for and treat the underlying causes of the problem. In the case of ADHD, I am certain that this condition is not caused by a deficiency of prescription drugs – stimulant or otherwise. According to MayoClinic.com, ADHD may be caused by several factors including: altered brain function; genetics; past exposure to environmental toxins, tobacco or drugs; or, food additives. Unfortunately, except for food additives, most of these potential causes are not reversible and these theories have not lead to new treatment breakthroughs.

At the same time, we are ignoring two common and treatable medical conditions that may be significant contributors to ADHD: low iron and hypothyroidism (low thyroid). In fact, several recent studies have shown a strong correlation between low iron levels and ADHD. For example, researchers in India studying children with newly diagnosed ADHD concluded, “Serum ferritin (a measure of iron levels) was found to be significantly lower in children with ADHD.”

Another study published in the Archives of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine concluded, “…low iron stores contribute to ADHD and that ADHD children may benefit from iron supplementation…” Other studies have had similar findings, verifying a strong tendency for children with ADHD to have diminished iron levels. It appears very likely that low iron contributes to at least some cases of ADHD.

Although evidence connecting ADHD to hypothyroidism is not as strong as that linking ADHD to low iron, it is still compelling. At first glance this connection may seem unlikely since low thyroid is well known to cause sluggishness and low energy. However, some of history’s top thyroid experts were able to see through this paradox and recognize that hypothyroidism can also cause hyperactivity. Back in 1915, the “father of endocrinology,” Eugene Hertoghe, MD, stated that in certain hypothyroid children, “there is an extreme turbulence, with (a tendency) to throw down and break everything” (The Practitioner Jan. 1915). Hertoghe’s “turbulence” certainly sounds like today’s hyperactivity. Dr. Borda Barnes, who had a Ph.D. in thyroid physiology as well as an MD, was even more explicit in describing what he called “paradoxical” effects of mild thyroid deficiencies on children. In his book, “Hypothyroidism: the Unsuspected Illness,” Barnes described two boys who were “hyperactive and restless” until their thyroid deficiencies were treated.

Natural Treatments for ADHD

Recent science has begun to corroborate the insights of these thyroid pioneers. In 2007, a study in The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology reported that low thyroid levels in blood tests were associated with ADHD symptoms. Even more recently, research published in the Journal of Affective Disorders found a connection between ADHD-related conditions and mild hypothyroidism. Based on medical history and emerging science, I believe that before giving potentially toxic medications to patients who show signs of ADHD, doctors should carefully screen them for iron deficiency and hypothyroidism. These conditions are common, important, and highly treatable and they may play a major role in ADHD. Natural treatments for ADHD are available. They are usually safer and more effective to treat the underlying causes of health problems instead of just treating the symptoms, so please make sure that your child or loved one with ADHD is carefully checked for low iron and hypothyroidism — and treated when necessary.
