You can buy attention (advertising)

You can beg for attention from the media (PR)

You can bug people one at a time to get attention (sales)

Or you can earn attention by creating something interesting and valuable and then publishing it online for free: a YouTube video, a blog, a research report, photos, a Twitter stream, an ebook, a Facebook page.

He mentioned in this video he wants to make the customer aware of the items they have chosen to sell before they come to the store. I agree - when a customer comes to your business without a real sense of the product offering you choose to sell they may be disappointed and their expectations will not be meet.

So as we market the products and services we choose (watch the video to why the word choice is important) to sell, how can we better explain our offerings through our “image and information flow”?

Social Media vs. Trade Shows

Which marketing tool can generate better results?
An interesting new website that helps calculate the odds of all sorts of information. For example, since its almost Christmas did you know the odds an adult usually puts up a Christmas tree are 1 in 1.2 ? It may seem like worthless information, however, some people will find it very interesting. Check out the site: Book of Odds.

The logo is really cool also.

I decided to post this blog post because I truly think that her marketing plan worked. Although I am not a BS fan, congratulation to her new team for a successful brand turnaround. Its should be inspiring to anyone that’s going through something.

Well, we probably can’t give all the credit back to Miss Spears, but there are several lessons that small business owners can learn from Britney’s career. Entrepreneurs may more typically look up to people like Ted Turner, Donald Trump, and Steve Jobs, but there is still inspiration to be gained from looking at the success of pop stars too. Britney epitomizes this sentiment.

Never Down for the Count

Most of us probably remember Britney’s breakdown a few years back. She got into a bad relationship, shaved her head, and found more press in the tabloids than from the Billboard rankings.

However, with some good guidance and direction from her father, Britney has been able to get herself back on track and she has regained much of the success that she had lost. She’s rocketed back to the top of the charts, gone on tour to promote her new album, and she seems to be much more “together” than she has been.

In business, you’re going to get knocked down. Sometimes, it’ll be your fault and other times, it won’t. The key is having the ability to get back up time and time again.

Stick to What You Do Best

When coming up with a “comeback” for her career, Britney Spears (and her father) did not try to reinvent herself. She didn’t suddenly try to dabble too heavily in country, hip hop, or whatever was the current flavour of the day.

She’s a pop artist who sings “catchy” radio-friendly tunes. It was with this exact same genre that she managed to come back into the limelight. People didn’t want a “new” Britney; they wanted a more grown-up version of the “old” Britney (and it worked).

At the same time, she was able to capitalize on new technologies like Twitter to improve her chances at a successful comeback. Small businesses need to grow with the times, but the core product must remain true to the brand.

Two decisions you must make in 2010!

Small businesses marketing has one major advantage over the larger companies. The speed of decision making. The speed of which the decisions can be made and the type of decisions can really make the difference in this economy. Here are 2 must have promotional products items your business must decide to buy in 2010:

- Mugs: These low cost items can really prove to be cost per impression superstars. The absolute best promotional product in my opinion is the good old fashion $2 logo’d mug. Heres the idea. If the average person keeps a mug for 10 years, which they do, and drinks 3 cups of coffee a day, the cost per impression equal about .00002. That’s amazingingly low and the mug will be in front of the customer for years to come.

- Awards: Who in their right mind would throw away an award they won? No one. In fact, I venture to say that majority of award winners past down these dust collectors from generation to generation. So way not implement a logo’d award program for your top 10 clients. Give the award as a way to for example, acknowledge most improved this, best that, or whatever idea you can think of. Your companies award will be the talk of your clients office and that a good thing.

Printed Cards Rock!

Extending a marketing conversation outside of the social network is important. I really like the concept that Enthusem has innovated. Every small business needs to be online and part of a network, however, once everyone is online the noise is deafening. So if an e-mail, tweet, or Linkin Inmail stop producing results take the conversation offline. To me Enthusem (they need a better overall design) seems like the right tool to JOT the marketing system and I am a fan.

You can get a free trial of the Enthusem service by clicking here.

Also check out MOO.com. They have an interesting business model for small businesses.
