But after a few months being involved, it really opened up my mind. I gained various knowledge and skills that weren't possible to learn in any ordinary classes.

Shahrin (3rd from right) during Sports' Day 2005 performance.

Being in the band definitely taught me about respect, understanding, communication, teamwork, loyalty, punctuality, perfection, self-quality and lots more! Do you think that Moral education in classroom can teach you all these? :D

What's the best/proudest moment/achievement you've experienced.

The best moment is certainly the memories from year 2004. That was the first year I joined the band and I was chosen to take part in the annual band marching competition. Yeah, we got 3rd placing eventually and I really felt touched after the competition concluded. It was because that we really worked hard and had great effort to put up a massive show!

The Michaelian Military Band performing during the Perak State-Level Band Competition 2004 in Perak Stadium.

I still remember practice sessions were from 8am in the morning until 10pm at night. Had roti bun with chocolate together with my bandmates. Even though it was just 3 months away from the competition, I was able to memorize 6 songs - gotta thank my seniors, instructor and my fellow band of brothers. :)

How was the training sessions like back then?

Initially, I disliked the style of training. Everything must obey orders and commands from the big shots. Haha. But after some time, I understood the training process and why it was important to have a high discipline level. Besides that, strictness during practices was one of the key factors to success.

Your role models, or the people you look up to in the band. Why?

My role model has to be Stephen Chong Jun Wei, my Trumpet senior. He taught me music, jazz especially, and in-depth knowledge about the instrument we play. Know what, I really love him - not "gay love" okay, it's the bother-ly love!

Shahrin (center Trumpeter) prepared for formation performance during Mr. Louis' Retirement Day in 2005.

Are you still involved in music?

Yes, I am a trumpeter for Vocstic Band at UiTM. They are more of a elite band. By the way, Vocstic derives from the words "Vocal" and "Acoustic".

Do you reminisce about the days you were in the band?

If there is a chance, I'm ready to march with you guys!

Shahrin (3rd Trumpter from right) marching during the Perak III event in 2005.

Message to the current band members.

To all the members and EXCOs, always be professional in what you do and don't ever give up!

---
Ahmad Shahrin
Trumpeter, 2004-2008
1st Quartermaster & Section Leader, 2007-2008

MMB Annual General Meeting (AGM) 2011

Today, the Annual General Meeting was held. One of the best experiences of my life. Being in the Michaelian Military Band has shaped me to be who and what I am right now. I know this sounds very vague but, this is the best way I can explain it.

Alexander (most right) practicing during an indoor ensemble session.

Also, skipping class is a plus for being in the band. :D

What's the best/proudest moment/achievement you've experienced.

The whole 3 years that I was in SMI and bring in MMB is definitely the proudest moment I've had. Being able to sport the new uniforms and doing that 2005 band formation is definitely up there in my list of achievements.

How was the training sessions like back then?

Back then? If you didn't have the grades you can't march. That was how it is. Want to throw up during long sessions of marching and standing in the sun? Andrew Ng will have something to say about that.

Alexander as one of the members practicing for a marching competition in 2004.

Get out of line during band camp? Tjun Kong will throw a tree on your back and make you run laps at 12pm. Fun times. I loved it.

Your role models, or the people you look up to in the band. Why?

I always looked up to Aaron Singh because he was a good leader.

Andrew Ng because he taught me what hardship is. Marching/being drum major for competition while having a fever? Yea, top that.

And Abdul Rahman (RIP) because this little guy was just awesome.

Are you still involved in music?

I was involved with music a little bit when I moved to the America. I joined the high school marching band but I quit shortly because it just doesn't live up to the Michaelian Military Band back in Malaysia.

Alexander (most left) during Young Band Festival in 2003.

Do you reminisce about the days you were in the band?

So, I'm a Muay Thai fighter now. Everytime I go for training sessions, I will always reminisce about training in MMB. Nothing pushes me further than thinking about the hardships of training in MMB. The experience and the lessons MMB have given me always drives me to excel in my Muay Thai training.

Message to the current band members.

Stay strong. Be proud. Nothing will ever make you happier than walking around in a foreign country and having people recognize St Michael's.

---
Alexander Sia
Trombonist, 2002-2005

Beyond the Music 2011 - Rehearsal Photos

Here are some photos taken during the Michaelian Military Band's rehearsal for tonight's Beyond the Music 2011 Concert at Dewan Leong Wan Chin, PGS Ipoh.

Rehearsal conducted by guest conductor Lester Lim.

Also conducted by MMB's very own instructor, Wai Mun.

Flugelhorn player.

Alto saxophonists.

Clarinetists.

Percussionists.

Soprano saxophonist.

Trombonist.

Photos taken by Syaf Ahmad. Besides that, people back then used to wonder what kind of band were we. The best thing about it was that we got to show then what MMB is made of, surprising many of them! Hmm... Being a band member was memorable in many ways.

The proudest moment is when we achieved 2nd placing the Perak-Level Band Competition in 2002. I remember my Section Leader saying that it's not the win that counts - it's the teamwork instead. Furthermore, we got to show the audience what MMB-style music and showmanship are about.

John (2nd from left) performing during Young Band Festival in 2003.

We were unique in our own ways.

To the current members of MMB, show everyone what the band is made of and remember to achieve success as a team. We do things together - we play, laugh, go through hardships together. Hence, the "ONE BAND ONE SOUND" phrase. In Form 1 & 2, afternoon section members have practices every Friday at 8am. As much as I can recall, we always practice songs and march - turn right, turn left.

Richard Chong (most right) ready for the Perak 3 Parade March in 2005.

When we're already in the morning section, we'll head to the band room after school, take the "besi lama" and practice. Once in a while, we'll gather away from school at the McDonald outlet in town. Over there, we can meet other school's band members as well. They're usually from Sam Tet, PGS and Poi Lam, just to name a few.

What's the best/proudest moment/achievement you've experienced.

DEFINITELY has to be in 2005 when we had two ongoing missions - the annual Band Marching Competition and Band Concert. For the band competition, we achieved 2nd placing while the concert was a great success.

Richard Chong (most left) after the band marching competition in 2005.

Richard Chong (most front) with the Saxophone line during the MMB Band Concert Faith Fraternity & Service in 2005.

Know what, believe it or not, I really miss those times marching under the hot sun! During Saturday practices, we'll get 10 push ups punishment for being late. When we're already late, we can't just walk into the school compound because the EXCO will be shouting 10 to 1 - causing you to run instead.

Richard Chong (most right) during the Merdeka Parade in 2005.

I still remember when I was a junior, the seniors tend to make us laugh or move when we fall in. If we react, another 10 push ups.

Your role models, or the people you look up to in the band. Why?

Most of my seniors have their own unique traits and strengths but if I have to name a few, Wai Mun and Wai Hin deserve it. Really love it.

Richard Chong (middle) during the Sports' Day in 2005.

Do you reminisce about the days you were in the band?

Yes, especially the friendships I've made in the band. One favourite gang of mine would be the group with Kevin Wong, Kah Soon and Chun Hee. For no particular reason, we were labeled as "007". Wherever we go, we'll always be together.

Richard Chong (2nd from left) with (L-R) Kevin Wong, Kah Soon and Chun Hee.

Message to the current band members.

Enjoy your life as a student in St. Michael's as well as being a part of the MMB group. Don't skip practices and enjoy the moment with the band and your band mates.

Richard Chong (with Baritone Saxophone) during his last performance with MMB at the For Wonderful Friendship Concert in 2008.

With Pride Shall We March.

---
Richard Chong
Saxophonist, 2002-2006
3rd Quartermaster & Librarian, 2005-2006

Alumni's Flashback: Cheng Hon Loong

Cheng Hon Loong - currently just finished his Advanced Diploma at Tunku Abdul Rahman College.

Hon Loong.

Describe what's like being in the band during your time.

During my time, the Michaelian Military Band is more like my second home. In school, we usually spend time either in the band room or on the field rather than in classes. It's always a legitimate excuse to skip classes - that's one of the "benefits" of being a band member.

Another "benefit" is none other than meeting girls, since there are no girls available in school except for Form 6. Well, through the band I was able to know a few pretty girls back then. LOL.

Hon Loong (most left) during Young Band Festival performance in 2003.

But the most beneficial thing about being in the band is that I learned how to understand and deal with different types of people.

What's the best/proudest moment/achievement you've experienced.

Well, the best moment being in the band is undoubtedly those days under Aaron Singh's command. It was simply because he provided us both fun and hardships - and most importantly, he's a good leader and joker. Always role-playing Darth Vader from Star Wars. That's his favourite. LOL.

Hon Loong (most right) with band members from Shen Jai during an exchange event in 2004.

My best personal achievement was to be able to pass on the knowledge and skills, that I received from my senior Hee Kheen, to my juniors. It was great that they enjoyed my lessons as well, and hopefully they'll also pass it to their juniors.

How was the training sessions like back then?

When I was in the band from 2001 to 2005, the band experienced a huge evolution. In 2001, the traditional strict hardcore training still exist and we usually have more marching drills than leisure time. Punishments were also quite "severe" as there are no such thing as fooling around. Almost all the seniors were like dictators.

Hon Loong (2nd snare drummer from right) marching during the Merdeka Parade in 2004.

But as the band moved toward new objectives, things changed - the band started to focus more on indoor performances and the marching style has gradually "toned down" over the time. It's not a bad thing though, but thinking back on how things were back then - I realize that the former style of marching drills was way more fun during trainings. I still remember how the seniors taught us during band camps.

Hon Loong (2nd from left) with his band mates during the Training Camp at Penang in 2003.

Your role models, or the people you look up to in the band. Why?

I think my role models were my Section Leaders, Aaron Singh and Seng Hui. They inspired me a lot - for instance, the way to lead the band - although we seldom see Seng Hui during the section practices. Also, Aaron Lai, my partner as the Section Leader of Percussion Section. Why? I'm sure those who were under us will know why.

Hon Loong (most right) with Aaron Lai (2nd from right) during a performance at OMA Dinner in 2004.

Do you reminisce about the days you were in the band?

Of course I miss those band days. It's the time where we have such a big group of good friends hanging around, having fun and taking punishments together. I certainly enjoyed every moment of it and it was a pleasure to lead the band and the Percussion section back then. Also, I miss the good opportunities to meet girls. ;)

Hong Loong (seated, 3rd from left) with his Percussion section in 2005.

Message to the current band members.

To the juniors who are currently in the band and have no clue who I am - well, enjoy and appreciate every moment in the band and with your band mates. Go all out during your performances; remember to flaunt what you have.

With Pride Shall We March.

---
Hon Loong
Snare Drummer, 2001-2005
3rd Quartermaster, 2003-2004
Percussion Section Leader, 2003-2005
Vice Chairperson, 2004-2005

Michaelian Military Band Concert 2011 Poster

The poster for the upcoming band concert "Beyond the Music" is ready! But we did enjoy the times spent together with great friends in the band.

During training camps, few seniors would come into our dorms, chat with us. They even told us ghost stories, just to scare us.

Bryan (most front) during the Merdeka Parade in 2007.

What's the best/proudest moment/achievement you've experienced.

I would say that the proudest moment for me would be taking part in my first marching band competition back in 2004, where we got 3rd placing! I didn't know anything about competitions back then.

How was the training sessions like back then?

Hmm... Band practices during my days were really tough. We had to run rounds in the school field and sometimes the school perimeter under Sir Wai Mun or Sir Wai Hin.

As we began to progress, we always look forward to all sectional practices. Even so, there weren't enough instruments. Most of us had to share with our seniors.

Bryan (most right) during Teachers' Day performance in 2005.

Your role models, or the people you look up to in the band. Why?

My role model? Yew Wei and Asyraff. Both of them are very good in flute especially.

Are you still involved in music?

Currently, I'm taking guitar lessons from my church people. It's one of those secondary school life where you'll never go through again. The fondest memories of my band life so far are mostly during band competitions. The crowds and supporters cheering on us. When I entered Form 1, I signed up for Scout but my friend pulled me into the band. I reluctantly joined, thinking that I would probably quit soon as I had no interest. Little did I know that MMB actually made a deep impact in my life that it moulded me into who I am today.

It was there where I learned to be independent, vigilant, responsible and most importantly, communicative. MMB back then was very military-styled. We talked about responsibility and punctuality. Section leaders or afternoon supervisors would ring to find out if his members were absent. If we were late, we had to do push-ups and run rounds, depending on how late we were. Sometimes we even had to carry benches from the canteen or tuba/sousaphone while running. Push-up was all the time killing especially when it was under the senior's timing.

Jeremy Wong (middle) during his first Merdeka Parade function.

Well, it was a hard life in MMB then but somehow, these punishments made us stronger and healthier (and even more macho, ehm…). In fact, some of us began to developed muscles which made the girls from schools drool, driving them into frenzies (lol).

Serious stuff aside, MMB was also a place where I made several friends and we became lifelong friends till today. We went through plenty of ups and down together and our friendship strengthened.

What's the best/proudest moment/achievement you've experienced.

It was in 1997 when we had several big events. We had Coca-cola Clash of Band Competition in Ipoh, where we emerged as the 2nd runner up with the best Drum Major. We were invited to perform in Genting Highlands. In Merdeka Parade 1997, we lost. It was a setback and everyone was sad. However, there was no looking back as MMB emerged as champion in the Cabaran Taiping competition the next day. I reckoned that could be the first time MMB won after so many years. On top of that, we also won the best Drum Major award. That was the sweetest success of the year.

In 1998, I was the 2nd QM and the main task was new band uniform. Together with the EXCOs and Master Razlan, we worked our way through and finally got a new uniform. That was the beige coloured uniform. Well, the younger generations now may say that the uniform is nothing compared with the Power Ranger style but we were proud of it. It was sort of the standard back then. Later that year, we wore it during the MBI Day competition competing for Azlan Shah's cup. We emerged as 1st runner up and, again, we got the best Drum Major award. Mr Louis congratulated us for the magnificent performance and the suave uniform.

The beige coloured uniform as mentioned by Jeremy. It was replaced in 2004.

Organizing concerts was new to us then but we managed to put up a splendid show in 2001: Michaelian Musical Extravaganza. That was the pinnacle of MMB's success. A year before, we did an experimental concert in the school hall: Serenade 2000 and it was a stepping stone towards the real concert. We had an enjoyable time then. Most importantly, we showed the band community that we were capable in putting up concert too.

Jeremy Wong (most right) during the Michaelian Musical Concert in 2001.

How was the training sessions like back then?

Training then was kinda strict. Time management was the most important thing. Whenever we were late, we'll be punished. Another word which sends shivers to spine was court martial. I've never been called to one (thank god) but I heard that it was a scary interrogation for those who committed a really serious offense in the band.

The Michaelian Military Band during Jeremy Wong's years.

We were trained to follow orders. While orders can be harsh, there were times when orders were fun and challenging. Have you ever eaten rice with only 2 fingers? Not having a single grain of rice left in the lunch box? Not to rest your arms on the table while eating? Haha, we really had good times while having meals.

We used to have afternoon session practices too. I remember we had practices on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Holiday means more practices. It was difficult to plan for family holiday but we worked out well. Perhaps, that was the level of commitment we showed back in those days.

Your role models, or the people you look up to in the band. Why?

I would say I have a bunch of good friends and seniors whom I looked up to. Master Keng Huei was my respected Section Leader. He was with us through thick and thin. Trumpet section I knew back then comprised of mostly juniors.

Jeremy Wong (3rd from left) with his Trumpet section.

Back then, we were being looked down by other sections as we couldn't perform well. However, Keng Huei stood by us and finally; we performed the first full song perfectly: Thunderer. For once, trumpeters were in full force! We were only Form 1 and 2 and everyone was impressed. From then on, the Trumpet section moved forward together: One heart, one mind and one soul.

Are you still involved in music?

I've not been playing musical instruments since I left the MMB. However, I still attend concerts, recitals and symphony orchestras when there are good ones in town. Perhaps music has been part of my life that I still love to listen to orchestra and concert band pieces.

Do you reminisce about the days you were in the band?

I could still remember clearly that the first Saturday practice, there was about 50 new members. Just when MMB thought that they've recruited a big group, the number decreased to 5 by the end of the month. They were Kin Yan, Chun Wah, Jun Qing, Keng Yip, and I. We stayed on as the only 5 juniors until MMB decided to recruit the next batch 5-6 months later.

Back then, new members were called "Recruit". Only when you've passed the elementary test (marching and theory) that you'd be called "Junior". Five of us were the only Juniors then. But from 5, we became 4 when Keng Yip left to KL. So the four of us became closer friends and till today, we still hang out together. Recently, we branded ourselves as The Four.

The Four. L-R: Kin Yan, Jeremy Wong, Jun Qing and Chun Wah.

Besides, I still cherish the time I had with my fellow EXCOs. We went through plenty of bitterness. We never gave up and we supported each other. I'm glad that I've this bunch of buddies. Before practices on Saturdays, we loved to spend time in Kong Heng Kopitiam. Because of that, we named ourselves The Old Town Guys (OTG). Till today, we still meet up regularly.

Jeremy Wong (most right) with his Old Town Guys gang.

Message to the current band members.

Being a band member is a gift. No doubt at times, life can be tough but if you can get it through, 10 years down the road as you look back, you can proudly say that "Yes, I've made it, and I've made the right choice". Treasure the time you have in the band. It's vibrant, lively and exciting. You'll never experience the same thing once leave SMI, most importantly MMB.

With Pride Shall We March.

---
Jeremy Wong
Trumpeter Admin

Another year has come to an end and it's time to usher the new year of 2011.

Hello everyone and in case don't know, I'm Wei Ken - an alumni of the Michaelian Military Band and has been the blog administrator of MMB blog for quite some time.

Actually, this blog was started back in 2008 by another alumni, Jeffery Chan - Band Leader 07/08, but somehow or rather I took in-charge of the blog. *searches for Jeffery*

Alright, besides recapping on MMB's journey in 2010, I would like take this opportunity to share a message regarding my collaboration with this blog as well.

Firstly, the current blog template you see right now has been around for the past one year. I changed it in January 2010.

After a year, the template still looks good - that's why I didn't change it. ;)

Anyway, it has been a pleasure to be keeping everyone in touch via this blogging platform. By writing on events and functions of the past and also the current updates, the Michaelian Military Band blog has been the most active in the year of 2010.

The number of articles in 2010 is the highest since the start up of this blog and its post count doubled compared to the previous years.

The Michaelian Military Band network has also expanded to Facebook and Twitter - making it more convenient for members, alumnis and other patrons to interact and communicate with each other. The response has been positive so far.

Also in 2010, a new project has been successfully implemented on the blog. It's none other than the Alumni's Flashback segment, which features the stories and experiences of former MMB members.

The main objectives of this project are to allow current members to know their alumni better and be able to 'experience' the old times the alumni had with the band.

Therefore, special gratitude to those who have participated. Stay tuned for more flashbacks! If you have not read them, check out Alumni's Flashback.

MMB in 2010.

Anyway, as a whole new term awaits the Michaelian Military Band, there would be upcoming news regarding the band. However, I'm unable to provide such updates because I'm not involved with any events.

Therefore, I hope the current members will offer a hand in updating the blog with the latest updates. Anyone interested in writing?

With that, all the best in yet another brand new year. I, on behalf of all the alumnis, will be looking forward to a successful and rewarding year for the Michaelian Military Band.

Happy New Year 2011!

Yours sincerely,
Wei Ken
P/S: Feel free to read my blog at kenwooi.com and follow me on Twitter. :)

Michaelian Military Band in 2010

It has been another year for the Michaelian Military Band and this entry will bring you back on the significant events and functions that happened throughout the whole year of 2010.

--- FEBRUARY ---

Students of International College Of Music (ICOM) and their lecturer from the United States, Mr Gabriel, organized a music workshop with the band at the school hall.

--- MARCH ---

The annual Junior Leadership Training Camp was held.

--- APRIL ---

Another year, another Sports' Day for the alma mater.

The band was invited to perform in-conjunction of Vaisakhi 1 Malaysia at Stadium Indera Mulia. It's because I believe not many people of my age will devote their time in something they really like and create such experience along the way.

What's the best/proudest moment/achievement you've experienced.

Proudest moment would be in 2005. It's really a good year for us although we needed a bit more luck. The band concert was awesome...

Wilson Ng (2nd from bottom) with the Saxophone line during Faith, Fraternity and Service concert in 2005. It was Wilson's last concert with MMB.

And the State Competition was even more awesome...

Wilson Ng (2nd from left) with the Saxophonists after competing the State-level Band Marching Competition in 2005.

It's the first time in my 5 years the band really became precise and matured. Looking back at the formation we did in 2005 still gives me goosebumps. We didn't lost that year because we were weak, its just that the other band was a bit better than us.

MMB celebrating after the State-Level Band Marching Competition in 2005.

How was the training sessions like back then?

Training sessions were really structured with the introduction of proper training techniques. Basics were emphasized throughout the time.

Wilson Ng (with Silver Tenor Sax) during the Friendship Through Music concert in 2003.

Your role models, or the people you look up to in the band. Why?

I look to up Lam Fong Yew a lot during my days. He was my first direct senior in the band who thought me how to play the Saxophone. Fong Few is standing, most left.

Being not really musically inclined in the beginning gave me a hard time catching up. But he rarely gave up on his juniors. I remember once I was unable attend a band practice. He didn't mind and instead told me to try my best to attend as the band needs everyone to make miracles happen during the next state competition.

Wilson Ng (with gold lacquer Tenor Sax) performing during Teachers' Day in 2005.

That word struck me hard and today, I try to motivate my teammates rather than ordering them what to do because if they are with you, they won't let you down. And because of that, I'll never give up on anyone because I can't find a reason to do so.

Wilson Ng (most right) during the Exchange with Shen Jai Band in 2004.

Are you still involved in music?

I wish! Although I borrowed an Alto Saxophone from my friend, I occasionally play a beat or two when I am back in Ipoh. I got an invitation to join a small jazz gig in Penang but I don't really have the time for consistent training. So no direct involvement in music in the near future for me I guess.

Wilson Ng (the only Saxophonist visible) during a performance at Old Michaelian Association Dinner in 2004.

Do you reminisce about the days you were in the band?

Yea, of course I do, especially when I am reading this blog. You might say that the band may not directly teach you skills but it indeed honed up my soft skills. Skills such as commitment to results are what I learn all the time. Of course, my teenage years wouldn't be as vibrant if it wasn't because of the band.

Wilson Ng (2nd from right) marching for Perak III event in 2005.

Marching through parades, performing in stadiums and people cheering along the way. I wish I can still experience that!

Message to the current band members.

When you're in the band, give your 100%. There is no such thing as "one foot in and the other foot out" in life. Have fun along the way and respect one another. If you have an idea, share it and if you have frustrations, let it out and tell those who may concern directly.

Wilson (2nd from left) with his fellow EXCOs during his final term with MMB.

Don't worry because everyone is in a learning process. Don't be shy and keep everything to yourself. If everyone is connected, then the band will be united and one day, I am sure you will make it big.

---
Wilson Ng
Tenor Saxophonist, 2001-2005
Librarian, 2004-2005

Alumni's Flashback: Jeffery Chan Mun Kit

Jeffery Chan Mun Kit - currenly in UTAR, Kampar. Thus, the support from everyone is exceptionally great. No matter where we go, we're proud as a band member. Heads were lifted high, even when walking, my friends and I tend to follow the beat and walk in straight lines! That shows how the band has affected us.

Jeffery Chan (most right) during Merdeka Parade 2005.

Then, the second phase, that was after 2006 when the band's form dropped rapidly. Confidence and support deteriorated as a result. Things got harder and harder, BUT one thing is for sure - everyone still strive to make things better.

Jeffery Chan (2nd from left) during Merdeka Parade 2007.

In the end, everything was great and I very much enjoyed the 5 years spent in the band. Especially the class skipping sessions.

How did it feel to be leading the band as a Band Leader?

It's an honour, definitely. When I was the BL, things were tough and problems were appearing from all corners. Despite all that, it has taught me things that can't be learnt from books.

Jeffery Chan (most left) with the other Band Leaders for the next 3 terms after his.

It's something that I would never forget in my life, despite all the ups and downs I've been through.

What's the best/proudest moment/achievement you've experienced.

Many people in my term said 2004 was when the band's revolution took place. Some said 2005 was when the band were so strong that it got 2nd placing behind Nan Hwa Band just by one vote. However, things were different for me.

The moment I cherish the most was in 2007, when the band got beaten out of top 3 by Sam Tet, AMC and STAR (if my memory serves me right). Why is a lost so memorable? Well, the aftermath was what became the most memorable moment in my mind.

Everyone was in a great disappointment. Everyone was crying, even those "rascals" who caused so much problems during practices cried.

However, I still remember this one phrase from Master Jeffrey Cheong. He told us - "What's the problem with losing? When I was in the band, the band lost almost ALL the competitions we've joined. There's NO harm in losing a competition and there's no need to fret on it."

How was the training sessions like back then?

Well, it was tough in the beginning especially when the seniors were pushing us Form 1's for the competition for 2004 band competition. Yet, it's not just all hard work that defines the journey in the band. There were fun parts too.

Jeffery Chan (in black) playing games during Merdeka Band Camp 2007.

I still remember how the whole lecture hall laughed when there was a video clip of the practices during the camp, recorded by our instructor himself. (Especially, Mun Hou's superman act - anyone remember?)

Your role models, or the people you look up to in the band. Why?

Lee Wai Hin - Why? Simple, it's hard to find a leader who can maintain his seriousness during practices, yet still able to maintain good relationships with the members. The balance inspires me. I tried doing so, but failed in the seriousness part. LOL!

Lee Mun Ming - Working with him during the 2007-08 term was perhaps something I cherish the most. What inspires me isn't how good he was in music, but it was the way he looks at things, the way he chooses NOT to follow the norm and do the things he believes is right.

Are you still involved in music?

Unfortunately, no. I tried looking for some bands to join to continue pursuing music. I'm studying in Kampar, and the nearest band is in Ipoh. It's a sad thing UTAR doesn't have a concert band.

Jeffery Chan (2nd from right) performing during Teachers' Day in 2005.

Maybe I should join the UTAR Chinese Orchestra and get Asian-ized with the bamboo flute instead!

Do you reminisce about the days you were in the band?

Definitely, this happens especially when I see people performing, it reminds me of the days I was upstage and on the field. Honestly, if my age doesn't limit me, I'd be happy to participate with the band in any performance - Concert 2011 anyone?

Jeffery Chan (squatting, 2nd from right) with the Woodwind Section in 2005.

Anyhow, I'm still in contact with some of the band members of my batch, even though they were the ones I argue with the most during band's life - Louis Chong and Desmond Wong to be exact.

Message to the current band members.

I've seen the band at its peak, I've seen the band at its dreadful moment. The utmost importance as a band member is to enjoy your life in band.

Jeffery Chan (squatting, middle) during the gathering with Seri Kembangan school band after For Wonderful Friendship concert in 2008.

Music is something that relaxes us. Enjoy your time in the band, make the most out of it.

---
Jeffery Chan
Flutist, 2004-2008
Treasurer, 2006-2007
Band Leader, 2007-2008

Alumni's Flashback: Koo Kok Kin

Koo Kok Kin - currently doing his final year in Electrical and Electronic Engineering at NTU, Singapore.

Kok Kin.

Describe what's like being in the band during your time.

I have been enjoying a lot of freedom as a band member. We always lepak in band room after practice, sometimes even pay chess in it (oops!!). We hang out together a lot, even after graduating from the school. However, the band has gone through a transition period throughout my time. I can see the band focuses more on getting result out of the practices rather than having strict & stressful practices, which in a way is a good sign.

Kok Kin (most right) performing during an Old Michaelians Association dinner.

However, I still miss those time when the seniors will not think twice in yelling at us just to correct our mistakes.

Your role models, or the people you look up to in the band. Why?

Not anyone in particular. We even talk about it during some of our gathering at times. I can proudly tell my new made friends that I was part of a band and we did a lot of fantastic stuffs.

Kok Kin (2nd from left) with his batch members and Mun Ming.

What do you think about playing the Tuba, an instrument that many hesitate to play?

Well, I was skeptical about it initially as I joined the percussion section in Form 1. It was the band leader then, Mr. William Chan, who asked me to try out the instruments in bass section and that's how I ended playing it. It was hard initially (seeing the size of the instrument already scaring the hell out of you) but with persistence an dedication I survived my 7 years and even left some "marks" on it.

Oops!

Kok Kin (most left) performing during SMI's former principal Mr. Louis' Retirement Day in 2005.

Message to the current band members.

Just enjoy your time in the band. That time I was in Primary 5. The band was recruiting from the primary school so we could take part, be part of the band by Form 1 and would know how to play instruments. During those days, we didn't have much instruments so we take turns using Sky Lark instruments. Unfortunately, the flutes were all in bad shape. So we would be asked to buy our own personal instrument. I bought mine in Form 1 from a senior who was leaving the band and used it till I finish school in Form 6.

At that time, being in the band was notorious. Teachers knew you won't be in class 70% of the time and if you were - you will be sleeping. I can remember the number of classes I've skipped just to practice for Merdeka parade (at that time no band competition yet, only Merdeka Parade competition) and the school's Sports Day. But of course people in school loved the band. Mr Louis (former principal of SMI) always talked about the band in his speeches and it made us feel proud to be part of a grand heritage at SMI.

What's the best/proudest moment/achievement you've experienced.

The proudest moment would be the year MMB won 2nd in the Merdeka Parade 1996. It was my first Merdeka Parade and the first time after many years MMB won something. That was the only band competition in Perak and being top 3 means you are one of the best.

How was the training sessions like back then?

Every year we looked forward to 3 events - Sports Day, Merdeka Parade and the yearly Band Gathering (which doesn't exist anymore). Training sessions always revolve around these 3 main events. School holidays were usually meant for camps, such as Formation camp, Marching camp and Indoor camp.

Guess which was our favourite! Haha!

Anyway, most seniors would remember how strict training were. Late 1 minute, 10 push ups. Late 10 minutes, 1 round at the field. Practices was like almost every day, excluding Sunday. When the event drew nearer, we even practice on some Sundays.

Your role models, or the people you look up to in the band. Why?

My role model was Mohd Syafik Afandi. My flute section leader. He was the epitome of what living a discipline life would mean. He was always praised for his marching skills and his way of conducting section practices.

Aaron Chan (2nd from right) and Syafik Afandi (3rd from left) during the Michaelian Musical Extravaganza in 2001.

He was never proud or boastful but humble and friendly. Up till today, he's still a good friend of mine.

Are you still involved in music?

I am still involve with music. Although I don't play the flute (I sold mine to the band) anymore, but I'm still a pianist at heart. I play regularly for church.

Do you reminisce about the days you were in the band?

Once in a while, my batch of band members will gather and talk about the funny things that happened during band camps, competition, practices, etc. Rarely we would talk about how the band changed our lives.

Aaron Chan (middle row, 2nd from right) in his last year with MMB as a colourguard in 2002.

But I can see it through the lives they are living, through my life that the band did change some of our perspective of life.

Message to the current band members.

Dear current members, I always like to encourage people to look at their history and heritage. To know and be proud of the rich history they belong to. By acknowledging and also embracing it, it would help you to appreciate what you have now and how you are going to move forward. So take care and God speed to all of you. I hope to hear more wonderful success stories from all of you.

With Pride Shall We March.

---
Aaron Chan
Flutist, 1994-2002
Treasurer, 1999-2000

Friendship Through Music 2003 Concert Booklet

Friendship Through Music 2003 is a combined concert with Kuen Cheng Girls' High School from Kuala Lumpur.

Held at the Yuk Choy Primary school hall and conducted by Mr. Lee Mun Ming, Master Lam Fong Yew and Mr. Wong Chee Hwa, it's the first time the band organized a combined concert.

This is the concert's booklet.

The repertoires of the night was:

Combined

Sweet Osaka

Blue Ridge Saga

St. Michael's Institution

Yagi Bushi

Chan Mali Chan

Mancini Magic

Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon

Cartoon Carnival

Disco Lives!

Kuen Cheng Girls' High School

Ross Roy

Umi

Japanese Graffiti V

Chinese Folk Song

Warabe Uta Fantasy

Applepine

Combined

Sailing

Don Pedro

Sayonara

A band exchange was held the next day at St. Michael's school hall. Of course, fees are much cheaper and sometimes, after certain functions/rehearsals, we get some allowances for food/drink (at times from the teacher advisor, Mr Teh Thian Lai's pocket).

What's the best/proudest moment/achievement you've experienced.

1) Winning 1st runners-up for the 1999 outdoor state level competition, just slightly behind Nan Hwa due to losing marks on the Drum Major - the year before, we were disqualified from prelims!

2) Winning 2nd for 1995 Merdeka Parade, my 1st function! - still remember seniors dashing back from Ipoh Field to the school carrying the school flag.

How was the training sessions like back then?

Trainings were tough and strict, every Saturday is standard practice, but there are many ad-hoc sectional practices during school holidays. On Fridays (morning school ends early while afternoon school starts late), members come to band room for practices. Attendance is considered good, SL used to call members to check if they are able to come.

Your role models, or the people you look up to in the band. Why?

Liang Hin - Strict and stern, but he's instrumental for instilling discipline, punctuality and many leadership qualities in us. A character builder indeed.

Keng Huei (2nd from right) with Liang Hin (4th from left), Mun Ming (most right) and the rest.

Razlan, Iskandar, Francis, Jeffrey Cheong and other seniors - Their good leadership and continuous motivation is key for us. In 1997, after losing in Coca Cola Clash of the Bands, Razlan motivated and trained us really hard. Later in that year, we won 1st placing + best Drum Major in Cabaran Taiping and 2nd in Merdeka Parade. Jeffrey's never-ending support and motivation during band competitions (even till today) really inspires me to also do the same.

Keng Huei (most right) accompanied the band in a competition in 2004.

Mun Ming - He was my role-model of leadership when we were afternoon supervisors in 1995. I started learning how to lead and speak through him (before that, I was very shy). Eventually, we worked alongside as the top EXCO for 2 yrs and it was a great partnership.

Are you still involved in music?

Nope, but would like to find time for it. In my 1st year in NUS, I briefly joined the Wind Symphony and Jazz Band but was unable to continue due to studies commitment.

Do you reminisce about the days you were in the band?

Definitely! Lots of wonderful happy and sad memories, especially with the trumpet section members (there were 8 of us then and the unity and bonding was really strong!). I recall one particular incident where my SL led us to shower in the toilet and we took longer than the given time and was caught!

As a result, Liang Hin made us stood in front of everyone and we were denied dinner for some time before running rounds (carrying the canteen bench?) as punishment. I was the Afternoon Supervisor then, so it was very embarrassing. But it was really a good lesson and incident that bonded us together.

Message to the current band members.

Enjoy and treasure every moment of your life in the band - learn as much as you could, be it your instrument, marching, formation, character or leadership, and build as many good friendships as you could.

Keng Huei (left) with one of the juniors, Rhey Kee.

Because as you look back many years later, you can proudly say "I have been through it all and I'm proud to have been a member of MMB as it has made me who I am today!".

---
Keng Huei
Trumpeter, 1994-2001
Afternoon Supervisor, 1995
Trumpet Section Leader & And after every Saturday practices, we would play basketball and football - also lepaking in Ipoh Old Town (Kong Heng Restaurant) or Super Kinta, which is no longer available.

What's the best/proudest moment/achievement you've experienced.

The proudest moment in the band was to play Trumpet solo when I was in Form 2. With the encouragement of my Trumpet Section Leader (Master Chew Keng Huei), I took up the responsibility and became the youngest Trumpet soloist during that time.

Kuang Huei (most left), one of the Trumpeters in the Michaelian Musical Extravaganza 2001.

Since then, I played every solo for big occasions and competitions till I reached Form 6.

How was the training sessions like back then?

Life in the band during my time was really tough. We were not as lucky as the current members (with Yamaha instrument) because we only have China's Sky Lark and Lincoln. Despite all that, we still manage to produce great tunes and play great marches.

Back then, we didn't know about dynamics and we blasted all the time. We thought that whoever can play the loudest and longest will be the "winner"! Thankfully, Master Ooi Liang Hin introduced the manuscript and thought us how to play properly, hence improving the band.

Punishment was very strict. I still remember that the members and I ran 20 rounds carrying benches. After that, we continued to do push ups. Even thought all these punishments were severe, we were able to endure and tolerate.

Kuang Huei (squatting, 1st from left) with the first batch of colourguards in 2002.

Merdeka Day competitions is a big event during that time and we kept practicing from morning till night. Even the teachers scolded us for always being absent in class. Most of the teachers were skeptical towards band members but we were still able to do well in exams.

Your role models, or the people you look up to in the band. It gave me certain privileges compared to other students. I personally had lots of fame and glamour - hahahaha - because of my involvement in debates and the band.

Now that I look back at it, it was something I miss a lot from school!

Being in the band meant sacrificing many other activities because of the time, commitment and dedication needed for the band. As for me, since I made the band my numero uno priority because of my love for music, I gave up my time for everything else and dedicated them all to the band.

Adrian Lai (2nd Trumpter from right) with his fellow trumpeters during Genting Performance in 2003.

All in all, being a band member means being a responsible and disciplined student in school. Everyday it's about studies and after that - band practices. The times spent in the band room, having sectional sessions, having meetings or just chilling with my fellow bandsmen were just awesome!

How did it feel to be leading the band as a Band Leader?

Well, it was certainly a highly responsible job. If the band were to screw up in any aspect, I would be the first person that the teachers turn to!

I guess I was fortunate to lead the band. It's true that "With great power, comes great responsibility". This phrase is definitely true to its word!

Adrian Lai as an emcee during MMB's Concert in 2005.

But then, I've never been pressured or stressed by my role. It was a tiring, yet fun job. Thank God, I had a good team of EXCOs and they made my job much easier.

It was a wonderful leadership experience and those wonder years will never forgotten. I've never regretted doing what I did in the band.

What's the best/proudest moment/achievement you've experienced.

DEFINITELY it has to be in 1999 at Perak Stadium where I participated in my very FIRST outdoor competition! I can still remember the seniors with me. Those that I was close to - Jun Qing, Keng Huei and Kuang Huei in the trumpet line. The others - Yit Wei, Kin Yan, Weng Yew, Chun Wah, Wai Loong and Phan Tay Hin!

It was such a memorable event! In my heart, we were already winners that night, even though we eventually lost to Nan Hwa - but we were so close!

The moment where we marched into the stadium through the tunnel to the center of the field, I tell you, that sort of experience and moment are SERIOUSLY priceless. That night will definitely remain in my heart - marching around the field and going through the steps, without blowing the trumpet - I was just Form 1 and I didn't know how to play, yet! Hahahaha!

But I maintained the height of my trumpet at 110 degrees upright ALL the time!

How was the training sessions like back then?

Well, training sessions were very frequent - always training for something and being involved in various functions and events.

My Saturdays are dedicated entirely to band practices that starts at 8am sharp! One second late means 10 push ups on the spot, no excuses! Back then, Saturday practices were conducted at the Old Band Room (Percussion Room) and members fall in there. At that time, we don't have the New Band Room yet.

Those memories can never be erased.

Adrian Lai (1st Trumpeter from right) during ensemble practice.

Other than that, there are the usual camps. Training camps is always FUN even though they felt like HELL when I was a member! It really excites me when members sleep together in classrooms. And on the next morning, we wake up real early for morning exercise, breakfast and then marching training.

And during camps, the last night is always reserved for "Night Stalk"! That was really fun, loved it!

Your role models, or the people you look up to in the band. Why?

One of them is definitely Aaron Singh. My predecessor before I was Band Leader. Aaron taught and guided me a lot, both as a person and as a bandsman, and pointing me in the right direction. He is a man of his word and is always just and fair in both his words and actions.

Another one is Ooi Liang Hin. I'm very amazed and marveled by his strictness and leadership skills whenever he used to attend camps and practices. He makes all of us tremble whenever we hear "OMG! Liang Hin is here!" phrase! Hahahaha!

Are you still involved in music?

Well, I wish I had the time! But nah, don't have the time. At least there's the occasional piano playing, a little bit of guitar and YES, I still know how to play my trumpet. =)

Do you reminisce about the days you were in the band?

I've never forgotten the days of me being a band member - not even a minute. Today, wherever I go, I'm proud to tell people that I've been part of the Michaelian Military Band and because of the band, I am who I am and have ended up where I am today. It's true, definitely.

Adrian Lai (last row, 3rd Trumpter from left) during Young Band Festival in 2003.

The band has definitely shaped me into the leader I am today. I've always been a commander, not a follower, even up until today. It's not that I can't follow others, but I guess I'd have to bow my head down when others say that I do a good job leading.

But yeah, I love leading and managing people, that's why I always appreciate the fact that I was given the golden opportunity of leading the Michaelian Military Band.

Message to the current band members.

ENJOY life in secondary school and in the band! Make FULL use of your time, because after you graduate from school, it's gonna be another chapter in tertiary level.

For now, make the most out of everything, especially being a band member! Cherish those moments you have in the band, for you will look back with a smile on your face.

I just smiled. =)

---
Adrian Lai
Trumpeter, 1999-2005
Afternoon Supervisor, 2000
Assistant Brass Section Leader, 2001-2002
Brass Section Leader & Band Leader, 2002-2003
