I just keep them in a pile on the side of my desk to use as reference.

At the same time one of my favorite things to look at is the development sketches from my favorite artists. Sometimes I'm more interested in the creative process than the actual comic, movie, TV show or whatever else the final product turns out to be.

One of the main characters in my current project is a young dragon who's been captured by the corrupt mayor of a port town. For the dragon's role he has to be more approachable and relatable than the standard fantasy dragons we all know.

Aside from his personality the only guideline the writer gave me was that he has to be a strong young male. The story also calls for the the main protagonist to be able to comfortably ride on him.

My first idea was to make him some sort of a mix between a generic dragon and a dog. Fisrt I looked at reference photos of other dragon designs and then went for a walk to check out some dogs in action. After that I sat down and started sketching.

Above is my thought process of how I actualized that Idea into a design I could use. Aside from putting it all together digitally I didn't edit any of this and I put up some sketches that I'm less than happy with. I'm not sure that this will be the final design for the comic yet but it's interesting (for me atleast) to see the development process.

--Also, Google wont let me make this image bigger, sorry.
