Chapter 1

Today’s reality… Doing something new

January 3, 2018

“Good morning, Danica. How are you today?” asks Dr. Green as he walks into his office, late as usual.

His glasses sit askew atop his head, his salt and pepper hair sticking out in all directions. This is the man who has been counseling me to get on with my life. The man who scarcely arrives to our appointments on time. But I like him. He’s easy to talk with: jovial, caring, and not nearly as pushy as other therapists I’ve seen through the years.

He seats himself in the chair across from me and I close my eyes, breathing in deeply. “I opened my email this weekend.”

“Oh? Is that unusual for you?” he asks.

“My old email. The account from… before.”

Dr. Green remains quiet, waiting for more. When it becomes clear I’m not offering up an explanation he does as he always does - he pokes at the hornets’ nest. “What prompted you to do that?”

Tears jab the back of my eyelids, even as a small smile dances upon my lips. “I had a birthday Sunday,” I remind him, knowing full well he’s aware my birthday was New Year's Eve. “I turned twenty-one, and do you know what I did?”

He raises a brow in question, perching his glasses on the tip of his nose, and going to work jotting notes on the pad laying in his lap.

“Nothing. I did nothing. I sat in a dark room and watched the teenagers across the street set off fireworks.” I sound so lame, I think to myself, shaking my head. “It’s pathetic honestly. I know it and you know it and that’s why I opened the email. I guess I wanted to know if anyone was thinking of me.”

“You guess?” he asks, and I shrug indifferently. “And, what did you find?”

What did I find? I found years of accumulated junk mail and well wishes from people I’ve long left behind. I didn’t stop to look at the messages, not all of them anyway. Instead, I clicked the senders into alphabetical order and searched for relevant names. More specifically, I searched for one name.

He’d sent three messages and as I’d read the words on the glowing screen before me, while fireworks popped outside my window, the truth of my life crashed down on me.

I’m weary of being this person, of living life alone, of being afraid to live.

I’m more afraid of letting someone in. Again. It’s been five years.

Can I face the fear? Overcome the pain?

It’s time to find out. Because if I don’t… I’m not sure I’ll survive.

The elevator doors barely had time to open before I wedged my body through the opening. I rushed down the hall, unlocked and threw open the door, to find Krys perched on the edge of the leather sofa, a glass of wine halfway to her lips.

Out of breath, my eyes scanned the room. “What’s wrong? Where is she?”

“She locked herself in the bathroom. Your girlfriend is a drunk crier.”

“Not normally, Krys. What did you do to her?” I snapped.

Not waiting for her answer, I dropped my keys by the door and sent an irritated glance her way as I walked through the powder room to the bathroom door.

"Sav? Baby, you okay?” I called as I knocked lightly.

The running water of the shower was my only reply. Since she obviously couldn’t hear me, I decide to get some answers from Krys who attacked me before I could enter back into the living room.

“Why the hell do you assume I did something? I’m just the babysitter here.”

“Because it’s you. Trouble follows you wherever you go.”

“Screw you.”

“What?” I asked as I rolled to the balls of my feet.
“Duck!” Nickoli yelled again.
I lifted up and pushed the heavy hair from my face in time to see his sword fly towards my head.
“Gah!” The scream came automatically as I fell to my knees and rolled forward, executing an effortless somersault. My wooden sword swung at Nickoli’s legs as I gained my footing. He jumped back with a laugh but not before the sword tip grazed the fabric of his pant leg.
“Nice move,” he offered with a smile before adding a wink and his trademark sarcasm, “just a little slow.”
Staying alert, Nickoli took three steps back and held his sword at the ready as I reset myself. His mocking tone caused the ire to rise within me, and my weapon dropped to my side as survey his cocky face. I'm breathing heavy, winded with a bead of sweat running down my temple, yet he looks untouched. As though our training session is a walk in the park for him. How utterly frustrating.
“I wasn’t expecting you to take my head off,” I snapped not bothering to hide my irritation.
“Well milady, you can not expect the enemy to take it easy on you.” His tone is all the provocation I need, and I rushed him sword swinging as though I’m a mad woman.

The one with the fan letter #FromTheWreckage

When I decided to make From The Wreckage FREE for everyone only a month after release I did so with a specific purpose. To share a story of hope with as many people as possible.

From The Wreckage tells the story of teens and how one act of mother nature changes their lives. I focus on Jules and West in the story, but I touch on the immediate aftermath for a small Texas town too. The conflict in this story is the storm, the loss and the hope for tomorrow. You can read From The Wreckage and get closure.
I then went on to write Out of Runs and All That Remains these books follow Jules,West and their friends as they move forward dealing with guilt, changes and then their futures as more conflict arises.

The story is very close to my heart. What I didn't expect was how close the story would be to yours. Over the past several months I've found extreme joy in reading reviews, emails and Facebook posts from readers who have been touched by this story.

I wanted to share this one with you all -

Hi Michelle. I haven't ever written an author before, but I just finished the From the Wreckage series and was so moved I just had to tell you how much I loved it.
I was attracted to the book on one of the free book lists because of the natural disaster aspect (although I do love love, and coming of age novels too!). My family rode out Hurricane Andrew (and an included tornado) in our house in South Miami when I was 14. Long story short, the house was unlivable after the storm. We spent 2 weeks at a friend's apartment and my parents sent me to live with people they knew but I had not previously met, to start at a new high school in a new county, not knowing a soul, until they were able to join me 2 months later. In Miami, I went to the same school with the same people for 9 years, had just made JV cheer at the high school, already had plans for my college of choice - and boom, everything changed overnight - it was like hitting restart on my life and it took a few years for me to find a new normal.
Needless to say, I identified with Jules so much in this series! I am from wreckage too, I had to struggle to start anew, I have a wonderful love who I never would have met, and great family and friends that I would have missed out on.
This series touched me, made me reflect, made me grateful for all I've survived, and proud of myself for the work I put in to myself to get where I am today, so thank you. I am a big fan now, and will definitely check out your other works!

PS - Last Love Song by ZZ Ward is one of my favorites, she's amazing! I loved seeing that in your playlist section.

#UtopyaTimeWarp - How one decision changes you...for the better!

One decision.

One event.

That's all it took to change my life. Dramatic? Possibly. Truth? Definitely.

In early 2013 I made the decision to buy a ticket to UtopYA Con 2013 after hearing about the 2012 event from bloggers and authors I respected. I was getting ready to publish 'Never Let You Fall' and I thought what better way to figure out this whole Indie/self-publishing industry than to dive in.

At this point I was a stay at home mom whose youngest child had just started school and whose husband supported her, but didn't quiet 'get it'. I talked him into going, "Hey, it's Nashville and we've always wanted to go!", secured my fabulous mother-in-law to come watch our kids, and prepared for my first event as a published author.

Best. Decision. Ever.

The number one reason I say this: my spouse. When he walked into UtopYA 2013 he was given a crash course on 'how to be the spouse of a writer'. He realized after listening and talking to other attendees that YES, Facebook and Twitter ARE a necessary tool 90% of the time and I'm actually working while on there (most of the time). He sat in on Marketing and sales panels, he listened to other woman, dreamers like me, who have made their dream of writing a reality. He learned that yoga pants, sweatshirts and take-out will be our new normal - and that it's okay! :) THIS changed my life. He was always supportive but now he GOT IT! #Win

Two other things that happened that first year:

1) A blogger I'd been co-blogging with had to back out of a panel she was supposed to Moderate and UtopYA founder, Janet Wallace, had the crazy idea to put me in her place (WOW!) Here I was, a newly published author about to moderate my very first panel (on blog tours) with some of the BEST ladies around - Amy A Bartol, Addison Moore, Nancy Straight and Tess Watson

First I have a HUGE love for Amy, you all know this by now. I'd already planned my stalking and now I was going to get to 'interview' her about stuff! Add Nancy and Addison and Tess whom I'd been chatting with on-line for several months. This panel was amazing and being a moderator allowed me to set up in the 'bookstore' and sell my book baby for the first time.

2) Then, I won the Grand Prize dinner with keynote speaker Jennifer Armentrout. Yeah, J freaking Armentrout. Not only was did I get dinner with Jenn, but a bevy of other authors/UtopYA staff too.

I was blessed to sit at a meal and just talk to these amazing people. I was also mortified when Jennifer asked me what my book was about and all I could do was freeze. **Have a pitch perfected people!**

There are a million reasons this event is important to me. Over the past two years, I've made amazing friendships with authors and fans thanks to the fabulous community UtopYA fosters. I've learned invaluable information not only from the keynote speakers and panelists at the event but from the Facebook groups and official blog posts too.

Authors: UtopYA isn't just a signing or sales event. You don't come expecting to make a bunch of money - you might, but don't expect it. Come to UtopYA to learn, to meet, to lift others up and to find a tribe, be validated as an author and to share life with amazing creative souls and book lovers like yourself.

Readers: UtopYA isn't an event where you write your name on a sticky note and get two seconds with an author.With the exception of perhaps the keynote speakers (because they are usually only at the event for a few hours) you have a TON of access to authors all weekend. You WILL have time to stand and chat, perhaps do lunch or drinks, with authors. Everyone with a UtopYA Con ticket is considered a part of the team.

Consider buying a ticket to UtopYA 2015 this year. Author or fan its an amazing event and I'd LOVE to see you there.

**Financially speaking - There are typically people looking for roommates in our unofficail UtopYA FB group. I can tell you many people will split 4 to a room making the room roughly $100 per person.**

“Lumin?”

“I’m sorry,Tony, but I didn’t know who else to call.”

“What’s going on?”

“I think I’m in big trouble. You need to tell me what to do.” The signal cut out, and her heart leaped into her throat. “Are you still there?”

“I’m here, sweetheart, what kind of trouble?” he asked, his voice hardening. “Is it Quadero? Did he find out you helped us?”

“No, it’s not Quadero"

Lumin hooked her fingers in a strand of hair, tugging to replace her rampaging fear with pain. She hesitated.

“Don’t hang up,” Tony commanded as if sensing her misgivings. “You can tell me, Lumin. I can hear you’re scared. Whatever it is, you’re not alone, okay?”

“Do you know what Yersinia Pestis is?” she blurted.

A deep rumble from Tony’s throat preceded his answer. “The Bubonic Plague.”

“Yes. In the Middle Ages it was passed through contact, but imagine if it were engineered into an airborne virus and mutated every thirty-six hours. It would kill millions of people.” She licked her dry lips. “I think they’ve made one.”

“The Bubonic Plague is a bacteria, and who is they, Lumin?”

“I—don’t know who they are, but I think they know who I am.” Her voice stuttered. “You must have contact with people who can look into this. I heard a name, Dr. Clifford Bjornson. That might lead you somewhere. I have to go.”

“Wait! How do these people know you?”

Lumin dropped the sheet and reached for her dress. She pulled it over her head. Squeezing the phone between her ear and shoulder, as she did up the buttons she said, “Because Dr. Bjornson’s partner is lying dead in my bed.”

I grew up on the beautiful West Coast of British Columbia with the Pacific Ocean on my western doorstep, and thousands of acres of forest on the other. After finishing school, my life took a drastic twist, and a lifelong working relationship with the marine industry began.

After a twenty-year hiatus from my creative writing, the stories swirling in my mind began to swim hard to resurface, and I threw them a life ring. I’m about to unlock my door when I hear a rustling in my bush.

“Bonkers, if you don’t come here right now, I’m turning you into a purse.” I hear a harsh whisper around the corner of my porch. I roll my eyes. I walk down the stairs over to where Selene’s butt is in the air as she's searching through my bushes. I have to say for a stalker, she has a nice ass.

“Having issues again?” I ask.

She screams and turns to me, clenching her chest. “Are you trying to give me a heart attack?” she semi-yells at me.

“You’re in my bushes,” I remind her.

She puts her hands on her hips. “My dog got loose again. I’ll have to get that gate fixed, so he’ll quit running from me. Plus, he doesn’t listen.”

“Bonkers? Bonkers got loose again?” Is she using that dog as an excuse? I shake my head.

“I swear. I’m truly not stalking you.”

“I can tell because you’re not wearing my jersey.” I point at her.

“What? You think you’re the only player on the Mustangs that I like? For your information, I like all the players on the team.”

I nod at her. Maybe she’s a loyal fan. “Bonkers! Come!” I yell. Instantly, the dog appears at my feet, waggin’ his tail and trying to climb up my leg. I bend down, pick him up, and he licks my face.

If you've read Out of Ruins and All That Remains then you've met Dani. She plays a small roll in West and Jules' story but her own story is much bigger. And darker.

While writing Out of Ruins this girl jumped out at me. She was larger than life in my head and I knew I was going to have to write more of her. It wasn't planned, honestly these characters take on a life of their own! So I gave her some time in All That Remains thinking she'd quiet down. Nope, I knew I wasn't done with her yet. That is why you find the 'Authors Note' in the back of All That Remains letting you know about the Wrecked series coming soon. Dani created Wrecked.

I tried in vain during September and October to ignore her. I said I was going to wait until next year to write her story - I have other books I NEED to write first.

She won't shut up people! This girl had haunted me. I'd see these little glimpses into her life and I'd run to jot them down and then go back to Never Without You. Then two crazy things happened.

1) The amazing Regina Wamba at Mae I Design had the perfect cover photo for me. *cue angels singing and sun shining down*

2) The final piece of the puzzle hit me in the head on my three hour drive to YALL FEST on November 6th.

This is the same event that jump started my writing career back in 2012. How funny that the drive there this year would give Dani's story a clear direction. I'd been debating on a few things and my road trip, coupled with a LOT of very loud singing in the car, brought everything to me. Dani's story was ready.

“How about you tell me something that makes you angry. Anything,” Dr. Panos suggests.

For the past four weeks, Gram has dragged me into Dr. Panos' office and forced me to spend an hour sitting in her black leather chair so I could be subjected to a barrage of questions I had no intention of answering. Each session has been the same. A staring contest, a battle of wills. Dr. Panos stares at me, and I stare at the tiles on her ceiling. All one hundred and ninety-two of them.

“These sessions make me angry,” I reply, and immediately regret breaking. I’ve answered a handful of her questions these past four weeks; I’m sure she is delighted I’ve opened my mouth.

“How about healing? Does your healing make you angry?”

Tricky woman. Today’s score: Panos - 1 Dani - 0. I resolve not to answer her again.

Later that evening, I analyze the way I felt when Dr. Panos asked me that question. She hit a button, she made me answer her. Healing, does it make me angry?

Yes. That’s an easy answer. Telling why it makes me angry, that’s harder.

Why would I be angry about my body healing? A few months ago I would be in excruciating pain if I so much as moved wrong. For weeks I laid in a bed, heavily sedated, as doctors and nurses cleaned and prepped my burnt skin on a daily basis. It never mattered how much medication they gave me; unless they put me to sleep, I could feel the pain.

The pain was comforting in a strange way because I deserved it.

I'm so horrible at blogging. I tell myself several times a week 'tomorrow I will make a post.'

NOPE.

I love sharing teases, info and random stuff on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Tumblr because they are quick short posts I can make on the run. This page though, this page takes time.

AND, wouldn't you rather I spend my time writing all those books you're waiting for??

I'm working on it people.

I'm working everyday to write the books I know you're waiting on.

<--- I'm working on Never Without You. It's got a long way to go though. I know there are people who are very very ready for this one. Here's the deal, it's coming BUT I have to be honest with you. My YA Contemporaries comes first. There are two reasons for this:
1) Tyalbrook is a very difficult story to write. I really have to be in the zone for this one and I have to wait on the characters to talk to me.
2) My From The Wreckage stories have been so successful (I'm SO grateful!) and while writing is a passion,it is also a business. I have to go where the readers are for me. I wish Fantasy was still in its heyday, but its not. My fan base is largely made up of contemp readers right now. I hope to convert them to Tyalbrook - and I have with some - but I have to be smart about what I write too.

I'm working on His Call some... I've actually been working on a cool surprise for this series and will start hitting the promotions pretty hard for Last Call. I'm hoping this will get Savannah and Gage more readers. I love this couple and want to share Gage's story soon.

And right now my most pressing project is Into The Fire. This is the first book in the Wrecked Series, a series of standalone novels that are From The Wreckage spin-offs. Into The Fire is Dani's story. I'm so excited about this book. My two alphas, who love me but are also very honest when they hate what I write, have said this about this book:

So, this is the state of me. Right now.

Happy (almost) Halloween all! Can you believe we are only a few days from November 1st?
Life has been ridiculously busy lately. Let me tell you about it...

Since June I have done one book event a month. Each event is a long weekend (or more) away from home, and my writing. We also took a week long vacation in August. I released three books this summer - One in June, July and August. September sped by as it opened with school and then Penned Con. Penned was a THIRTEEN hour drive to and from and a packed weekend event. Oh, and I was super super sick, too during that event AND the drive. Talk about miserable :( So between school, event and sickness I needed some time off.
We focused on school for a few weeks and September merged into October where we've been busy still with Fall events, more school stuff and yet another book event. I just returned Monday night from Queen City Indie Con and am now DONE with events for the year!

That was a small rundown on why I am so tired and behind. Obviously life throws way more than that at me, but you get the gist. I gave you all of that to say I am incredibly behind.

My goal at the beginning of this year was to release Never Without You and Book two from Last Call (His Call). Along the line, the From The Wreckage stories were created, therefore, pushing my other plans to the side. I still had hope over the summer of being able to finish all of the books I'd planned to do - and then life hit.

Reality is my family comes first.

Between events, promoting books, and family obligations I was creatively spent. I've sat down to write many many times but haven't seen a whole ton of results.

I am writing, it's just coming slow at the moment.

So, here is my plan...I am getting my stories back!

I'm getting back on schedule, back on track and back to work.

I plan on working my tail off in November and December in hopes of having Never Without You out early 2015. I'm so ready to give Tyalbrook the ending it, and you, deserves. I'm also working on covers, promo ideas, website thoughts, sprucing up Never Let You Fall and Last Call. So many things, but writing IS first on my list!

For the Tyalbrook and Last Call fans - Thank you for being patient. As a reader, I know how hard it is to wait for a book to be finished. I understand the frustration. Know that my goal is to always put out better and better products. I will not force a book to be written if it doesn't want to be. I am waiting for the story to be perfect before I hit publish. It may stink now, but in the long run you'll be glad I waited and gave you a great story instead of a mediocre one.

Yep, I've got news! I know I've been MIA on here lately, and for that I'm sorry. The end of August and September are always crazy months, and this year proved no exception. Add two book events, a release date, and a family vacation to the usual back to school/extra curricular activities and I'm lucky to be sane (relatively) at this point!

So, here's what I want you to know....

I AM working on Never Without You (Prophecy of Tyalbrook #3)

AND

I AM working on His Call (Last Call #2)

AT THE SAME TIME

Why am I writing two books at once? Welllll....you see, occasionally (or often) characters don't want to speak to me when I need them to. So when one book stops talking, I try to work on the other. I do not want to force the final book of the Tyalbrook series so I am taking my sweet time.

I know, I know..I'm sorry!

What I've learned over the past two years: I will try, with all my might, to write a complete series before I publish it. If I can. I loved being able to release the From The Wreckage series out to you in only three months. It was great. BUT, it's also un-realistic to think I can keep writing books like that and be a mom and wife, and do all my book stuff too. Some writers spit books out in days. I am NOT that person, usually.

At this point I don't anticipate either 'Never Wither You' or 'His Call' being released before December. I will try my best, but due to editing schedules alone, it probably won't happen.

I will try to include you all in the process more by posting fun things like Pinterest inspirations, playlists, casting thoughts...and of course teases as often as I can. I WANT you to be a part of this journey with me. I LOVE sharing these stories with you.

Did you leave home after high school? Either to college or moving out on your own? Did you find that rite of passage so many find when you pass on from a student in your parent's home to an adult who owns their future? This tease is about that moment for Jules. Just a moment when it hits you - life has changed.

I shared this tease this week on Facebook:

Here is a little more of that scene in the book...

“I’ll jump in and prove to you it’s totally safe and then you can give it a whirl. No worries. I’ll be there to save you if you need me,” he adds with a wink before tugging the rope from her fingers and flying out across the water. His body hits the water with a splash and a few people clap and laugh around the pond.

Jules leans forward, reaching for the swinging rope as it comes back to her. She steps back and brings it taut, taking a deep breath.

“Nothing to be afraid of, Jules. Just jump in!” Levi yells.

Jess’ voice joins in, “Jump!”

The moment feels larger than it is and Jules wants to laugh and cry as she stands there half-terrified of jumping and half-terrified of not. It mirrors her life right now. She laughs at the crazy thought; she has no idea why her heart feels so heavy and strange tonight. Taking a deep breath, she closes her eyes and wills herself to make the most of this situation. The reminder to live tickles the back of her mind. She said she would live for Tanya and now is her chance. Tanya would have jumped three times by now.

“Here goes nothing!” she tells herself as she launches her body into the air and then smacks the water feet first with a crisp swoosh.

As she floats under the chilly, yet refreshing, water her mind chooses that moment to picture the symbolism of a baptism. A rebirth for one’s soul and the moment strikes her. She’s started fresh, she’s worked things out with Austin, she’s making new friends, and she’s starting to get over the past. The sentiment is probably crazy, but it sticks in her mind anyway and the moment she comes up from air, Levi is waiting not five feet away.

“Ready to jump again, daredevil?” he asks, his southern drawl charming, as he wades the deep water.

It doesn’t take her more than a brief second to think before a large smile creeps across her face.

“Abso-freaking-lutley!”

We are NINE days out from All That Remains now! This is the where I start to get the shakes and freak out. I sent it back out to the editor this morning for one final look before publishing day and I'm nervous as heck. This putting books out there for the world to read, never gets easier.

A TEASE in honor of all the college kids starting school this week -

When she’d agreed to go to ‘a party’ with Debbie and Lisa, she had no idea exactly who was throwing the party. As they drive off campus and into a nearby neighborhood filled with nearly identical houses all decorated with school colors and Greek letters, she starts to get the hint. They’re still three weeks from the official move-in day for fall semester, so she’s surprised there’s much going on on campus right now.

But A&M isn’t Tyler, Texas. This isn’t backwoods bonfires and high school. Jules is about to get her first real taste of college life.

It was an interesting sight, all of the tacky eighties gear and crazy drunk co-eds wandering around the small box house with the neatly trimmed yard. Entering the house, she reminds herself of the plan:

Follow all the rules about college parties you’ve learned from countless on-line articles, your friends back home, and even Mom and Dad.

Number One: Don’t drink anything you didn’t pour or watch be poured.

Number Two: Don’t put your cup down.

Number Three: Don’t leave said party with a boy drunk.

Number Four: Don’t leave said party with any boy. (That one was her parents.)

Debbie, Lisa and the other girls don’t seem to subscribe to her strict list and soon she finds herself deserted, nursing a warm beer from the keg and standing amongst a group of be-wigged glam-rock wannabes when someone calls her name over the din.

**It's an 80's themed party, if you didn't figure that out.

Happy Tuesday y'all!!

(I've been writing 'Texas' for too long!)

I've got a couple of things for you today so let's dig in.

Second, I've been asked a few times if 'All That Remains' is the last book in the From The Wreckage series and I can now tell you NO, IT IS NOT.

Happy tears, right? So here's the dealio:

From The Wreckage, Out of Ruins and All That Remains are Jules and West's story.

Wreckage #4 AND #5 will be spin-off stories featuring characters and stories from the first three but I can't tell you who right now (it would be spoilerish).

The good part is Jules and West will be featured a lot in one of the spin-offs, if not both. You will get to see what's going on with their lives after All That Remains. YAY!!

The bit of bad news, if you see it that way, is these new books will have to wait until 2015. I have a commitment to finish out my fantasy series (Never Without You) and give my Last Call readers their second book (a steamier Gage POV!!) before I do anything else.

I have a feeling I will be writing multiple books at one time because I'm having a hard time shutting these characters down at night, let alone for three or four months!

I do want to make it clear that All That Remains will have an ending! It is NOT a cliffhanger. There may be loose ends pertaining to other story lines, but you will get a definite finish to Jules and West's story. For now ;)

Now onto the TEASE!! or should I say TEASES

Now for All That Remains...and sorry for the vagueness in this passage but what can I say? I can't give things away ;)

Sitting on the edge, he explains himself, “Jeff and I came over at the same time. Katie said you’d just closed your eyes and she let me in. I figured I’d sneak up behind you and wake you but once I laid down beside you-” He shrugs, his cheeks turning pink. “I didn’t have the heart to bother you. You looked so peaceful. I should have left, but damn it was comfortable and you smell really good.”

She tries not to laugh, but his compliment makes her giggle. His answer is so endearing and completely understandable. She taps the bed and scoots over meaningfully.

“I’m sorry I yelled at you.” She offers once he’s laying beside her. He lays on his back his head turned towards her as she lays on her side facing him. She moves slightly, her head touching his shoulder, and wraps her arm around his and hugs it to her chest lightly.

“Jules?”

“Let’s get a little more sleep and then we can have that breakfast you wanted, kay?” she asks, trying to ignore the plea in his voice when he said her name.

“I’m going to need you to make a decision. Soon. I can’t keep doing this.”

She closes her eyes, feeling ten kinds of horrible for not being able to give him an answer.

“I know. I’ll figure it out, I promise,” she offers and closes her eyes, praying she’ll be able to make good on that promise.

I'm in the midst of finishing up 'All That Remains' so this will be short...

Get a glimpse at Austin Rutledge, the middle brother in the clan.

AND A TEASE:

“Do you give up?”

He laughs at her confusion, and she wants to say no but she’s clueless. “Obviously!”

“I’m an engineering major.” Her brows rise in surprise. “I’ve impressed you, I see.”

“I have to admit you have. That’s very impressive…for a dumb jock.”

A peanut shell smacks her in the forehead, and she howls as Austin breaks into laughter. Austin tells Jules about his classes as they eat. The more he talks, the more impressed she is. He isn’t just another dumb jock and though he certainly has the talent to make it in the NFL he confides in her that he is questioning the choice.

“Football is all I’ve ever known. My parents have shots of my naked butt laying across a pigskin from day one. I can show you a million and one pictures from childhood and the majority will be football. Playing the game, at a game, watching a game. I love it, don’t get me wrong, but I get a different feeling when I build something.”

My Opening Lines!

My amazing friend and Alpha reader, Jessica pointed out an article today on "best opening lines"

in literature and it made me think.

"What are my opening lines, again?"

You'd think I would remember them all, but alas, I did not!

So for fun I pulled them. Now, a few of the books have prologues so I didn't use those lines.

I used the Chapter One lines.

Tuesday Tease - All That Remains

Happy Tuesday y'all! Have you seen the cover for All That Remains yet??

And all three together! I am so in love with these.

I wanted to let y'all know that I will not have All That Remains (ATR) up for pre-order most likely because I'm on a super tight schedule with getting it finished. So the plan is for it to go live on all platforms August 28th. If I change that and get pre-order set up you'll be the first to know!

ATR is a little different then FTW and OOR. It is told from the dual prospective of Jules and West. YES! West gets to talk!!

West POV -

“All right. Tell me the story. Why Jules Rutledge?”

Why, indeed! he ponders, sinking down into the chair and stretching his legs out. “I saw her standing there that night and I fell for her. It was instant. I was gone before I opened my mouth. I’d known her most of my life;.I’d watched her, knew she was with another guy even… but that night when she sat at that table and I looked up… it was over for me.”

“You fell for her before the tornado hit?”

“Yeah. In all honesty, I fell for her in the seventh grade. Maybe even before that. But when I kissed her that first time, I turned into a dumb pre-teen boy with a major hard-on and I had no idea what to do. Then my mom took a turn for the worse, and I dropped everything. Like we discussed.”

“And five years later you’re finally sitting across from the girl you fell for once and what?” She prods lightly.

Reminiscing the last year has been a favorite, and most hated, past time of his. So many things with Jules were perfect and worth the memories, and then there are the things he’d rather forget; (intentionally removing a sentence here for spoilers)

“And I gave her crap and fell in love.” He smiles.

“You saved her life.” Dr. Steel points out unnecessarily.

“And she saved mine.”
