AI Sovereignty, Democracy, and the Club That Left Britain Out

The guardrails are not being voted on. They never were. What is new is who is no longer in the room.

There is a phrase that gets repeated in every AI policy summit, every white paper, every op-ed calling for "responsible governance": we must govern this technology democratically. It sounds unimpeachable. It is also, on inspection, mostly untrue — and worth being honest about why.

The guardrails are not being voted on

The frontier of AI — the models capable enough to matter geopolitically — sits inside a handful of companies, which sit inside one or two jurisdictions. The rules that govern what those models can do, who can access the chips that train them, and which countries get cut off from the supply chain are decided by executive action: export control lists, safety frameworks issued by agencies, bilateral arrangements between a small number of governments. None of this passes through a legislature in any meaningful sense, let alone a referendum. Calling it "democratic governance of AI" is closer to branding than description.

This is not a scandal so much as a pattern. It is the same pattern that produced the postwar order.

We have seen this movie before

Every consequential global regime of the last eighty years was built the same way — a small number of capable states deciding the rules, everyone else ratifying or complying:

Bretton Woods (1944). Forty-four nations sat in the room, but the monetary architecture that followed was substantially the product of one negotiation — Harry Dexter White for the United States against John Maynard Keynes for Britain — with Washington winning most of the substance.
The Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (1968). It legitimized exactly five nuclear states — the US, the Soviet Union, Britain, France, China — and froze everyone else out of possession, permanently. That club has not admitted a new member since.
The UN Security Council. The same five countries have held veto power since 1945. There is no credible path to expanding it.
COCOM and its successor, the Wassenaar Arrangement. A small coalition of Western states decided, unilaterally, what technology could flow east — first to the Soviet bloc, later to whoever the coalition deemed a risk.
The SWIFT financial architecture. A handful of allied governments effectively decide who remains inside the global payments system and who gets severed from it.

In every one of these, the language of shared, rules-based order coexisted with a reality of concentrated decision-making. The honest defence was never "everyone gets a vote." It was: the deciders remain accountable to their own electorates, and the arrangement can in principle be reversed. Whether that is a sufficient standard of legitimacy is the real argument — not whether the process is literally democratic, because it never has been.

The novelty: Britain is on the outside

Here is what is different this time. In every regime listed above, the United Kingdom was in the room. Nuclear club — founding member. UN Security Council — permanent seat. Bretton Woods — co-author of the framework, even while losing the argument. COCOM, Five Eyes, NATO's nuclear planning group — Britain was there by design, a function of the "special relationship" that guaranteed it a chair regardless of its relative economic weight.

AI is the first regime of this kind where that seat does not exist. For the first time since 1945, alliance history is not enough to buy Britain a place at the table where the guardrails are actually written.

It has stood up an AI Safety Institute and positioned itself as a convenor of the conversation. But convening is not deciding. The UK has no frontier lab operating at the scale of OpenAI, Anthropic, or Google DeepMind's parent company under its effective jurisdiction, and no leverage over the semiconductor chokepoints — Taiwan's foundries, American export controls — that actually determine who can train the next generation of models.

For the first time since 1945, alliance history is not enough to buy Britain a seat at the table where the guardrails are actually written. What buys the seat now is compute and model ownership — infrastructure, not history. That is a genuinely new kind of exclusion, and it says something larger about where power has actually migrated in the twenty-first century: away from the diplomatic and military architecture of the last century, toward whoever owns the physical and computational substrate of intelligence itself.

Sovereignty as the fallback

There is a narrower, more honest version of "AI sovereignty" that does hold up under scrutiny — not democratic co-authorship of the global rules, but the right of a state to build or secure its own compute, its own data infrastructure, and its own models so that it is not simply a rule-taker in someone else's regime. That is a real project, and one open to far more countries than the five or six writing the actual safety and export frameworks. It is not a seat at the table. It is the ability to build a different table.

That distinction — global rule-setting versus sovereign opt-out — is probably where the debate should actually be fought. Everything else is vocabulary doing work that the institutions themselves are not.

The Mirror Facing the Mirror

On the neverending present, the death of historical consciousness, and what Justin Bieber pulling up YouTube at Coachella has in common with veterans of twenty years of war who feel their wars never happened.

At his 2026 Coachella headlining set, Justin Bieber performed some of his older hits by pulling them up on a laptop via YouTube. Not by playing them. Not by performing them live. By finding the videos — the existing recordings, the already-produced content — and playing them to the audience as part of the show. A concert in which the performance of previous performances replaces performance. A video of a video, played to a crowd who filmed it on their phones to post as a video. The mirror facing the mirror, the reflections receding into a vanishing point, no original anywhere in the sequence.

It would be easy to dismiss this as a curiosity, an artist in uncertain health taking the path of least resistance at a high-stakes event. But the gesture is too precise to be accidental, and its precision reveals something about the era we are in that a more conventional concert would have hidden. What Bieber did at Coachella is what the content economy does to everything: it replaces the live event with the circulation of previous events. It substitutes presence with reference. It converts the unrepeatable moment into a loop of already-existing material. The neverending present does not generate new events. It recycles the ones it already has.

The content economy did not cause this condition. But it has perfected it. The feed is the technological form of the perpetual present: an endless horizontal scroll in which everything — the urgent and the trivial, the immediate and the archival, the live and the already-dead — appears in the same format, at the same size, demanding the same unit of attention. In the feed, there is no before and after. There is only the continuous present tense of the scroll. Nothing crystallizes into history because nothing has the time or the space to sediment. The event arrives, is consumed, and is replaced by more events. The sequence leaves no residue.

The Bieber Coachella moment is the content economy making its logic visible at the level of live performance. The concert was always the form of cultural event that most directly confronted the feed's logic: something that happened once, in a specific place, with a specific crowd, and could not be replicated. The concert produced historicity by definition — it was an event, and an event is something that happened and then stopped happening, sealing itself in time and becoming available only as memory or recording. What Bieber did was eliminate the event. He produced a concert that was already its own archive, that consumed its own occasion, that replaced the live moment with the already-existing document of previous moments. He produced a feed on stage.

The inability to produce historical consciousness does not stop at culture. It has reached the most extreme possible test case: war.

The United States fought in Afghanistan for twenty years — 2001 to 2021. The longest war in American history. Over 2,400 American military deaths, hundreds of thousands of Afghan civilian deaths, trillions of dollars of expenditure, a generation of soldiers and intelligence officers who gave a decade or more of their lives to a conflict that ended with the Taliban in power and the Kabul airport as the last image. Iraq was different in its particulars and identical in its structural fate: a war of enormous human and financial cost that has produced almost no lasting cultural crystallization, no canonical works of art or literature, no iconic imagery that has entered the collective imagination with the force that Vietnam's imagery did, no music that has become inseparable from the era in the way that the music of the Vietnam years is inseparable from that war.

On a recent episode of The Team House podcast — hosted by Jack Murphy — Taamir Ransome, a Delta Force EOD operator who was blown up forty times across deployments to Iraq, Afghanistan, and Syria, said something that should stop anyone who hears it. He described what veterans of the post-9/11 wars want from their country: recognition that these wars took place, that they happened. Not gratitude, not parades, not monuments. The minimum: acknowledgment of the fact. Murphy responded, laughing: we didn't go to war.

The laughter was not cynicism. It was the recognition of an absurdity so complete it had become almost comic. Twenty years of war, and the operative cultural fact for most of the country is that it didn't happen. Not because the wars were hidden — they were covered daily, documented obsessively, generated hundreds of thousands of hours of footage and reporting. But because the content economy processed them as content rather than as history. The wars arrived in the feed, were consumed as breaking news and then as background noise, and were replaced by more content. They left no residue. They produced no historicity. They happened in the perpetual present and vanished into it.

Compare this to the cultural crystallization that previous wars produced. Vietnam generated Apocalypse Now, Full Metal Jacket, The Deer Hunter, Born on the Fourth of July, Platoon — films that made the war inescapable as a cultural fact, that forced the country into a reckoning with what had happened and what it meant, that sealed the war in collective memory as something that could not be unfelt. It generated a musical culture — Creedence Clearwater Revival, Hendrix, Dylan, the whole counter-cultural explosion — that became inseparable from the era. It generated a political consciousness that shaped American culture for a generation. The war became history because the culture processed it as history: slowly, with the full weight of artistic attention, with the willingness to be changed by an encounter with something that could not be reduced to content.

The post-9/11 wars generated The Hurt Locker and Zero Dark Thirty — two technically accomplished films that were absorbed into the award season cycle and promptly forgotten. They generated no music that anyone associates with the era. They generated memoirs and journalism of considerable quality that were read by small audiences and did not enter the broader culture. They generated twenty years of daily news coverage that is now effectively inaccessible because it was never archived in a form that cultural memory could use — it was just feed, disappearing as it arrived.

The soldiers who fought them are left asking for the minimum: recognition that the wars took place, that they were real, that they happened to real people and deserve to exist in collective memory. The laughter on the podcast is the sound of a civilization that has lost the capacity to make its own experiences historical — that processes even its wars as content, consuming them in real time and leaving no trace.

The mirror facing the mirror produces infinite reflection and no image. The reflections recede into a vanishing point and what remains is the frame — the screen, the feed, the endless scroll — but not the thing the frame was supposed to contain. Bieber at Coachella pulling up YouTube is the cultural symptom. The veterans of twenty years of war asking for recognition that their wars happened is the human cost. Both are expressions of the same structural condition: a civilization trapped in the perpetual present, processing everything as content, generating no history, leaving no residue.

For something to become history it needs time and cultural space — the slow metabolization that transforms an event into a symbol, a symbol into a reference point, a reference point into the shared vocabulary through which a society understands itself. The content economy eliminates time and cultural space. It converts everything into the present tense and the present tense into a feed. What Vietnam was processed by films made years after the fact, by music that took the war's emotional reality and gave it form over a decade, by a political consciousness that developed slowly in response to the accumulating evidence — none of this is possible in the content economy. By the time a culture could have metabolized the Afghanistan war, the feed had already replaced it with something else. And the soldiers who fought it are left with the absurdity Ransome names and Murphy laughs at: the countrywide recognition that these wars took place, that they did happen.

They happened. The content economy just forgot to notice.

The Prancing Horse and the iPhone Designer

On Ferrari, the Luce, and how to destroy a brand in one presentation.

There is a particular kind of corporate failure that only happens to great brands. Not the failure of incompetence — any company can fail through incompetence. This is the failure of people who are too clever, too connected, too convinced of their own vision to notice that they are dismantling the thing they were entrusted to protect.

Ferrari had that failure on May 25th, 2026, in Rome.

What they presented

The Ferrari Luce is a four-door, five-seat, fully electric sedan. Starting price: €550,000. Power output: 1,036 horsepower across four motors. Interior: designed by LoveFrom, the creative studio of Sir Jony Ive — the man who gave the world the iMac, the iPhone, and the AirPod.

On paper, this is a serious car. Ferrari built a dedicated 880-volt platform from scratch. They filed 60 new patents. They assembled it in a new E-Building at Maranello. The engineering credentials are, as always with Ferrari, impeccable.

None of that matters.

Because what Ferrari unveiled in Rome was not a Ferrari. It was the car that Jony Ive would have built if Apple's Project Titan had survived. The screens have Apple Watch crowns. The infotainment panel has an iPad vibe. The Gorilla Glass and the button language and the entire philosophical grammar of the interior belong to Cupertino, not Maranello.

And the exterior? Hagerty called it "crude, ill-proportioned and inappropriate." Bloomberg quoted analyst Pierre-Olivier Essig: "a mix between a Honda Accord EV and a Tesla 3." Autoweek noted that "even yellow doesn't save it."

By close of trading on May 26th, Ferrari shares were down 6%. Peak intraday loss: 7.8%.

The market said what the press was thinking.

The Montezemolo moment

The morning after the launch, Luca di Montezemolo — the man who ran Ferrari from 1991 to 2014 and presided over the F50, Enzo, and LaFerrari — walked onto the Confindustria assembly stage in Rome.

He suggested Ferrari remove the Prancing Horse from the Luce.

Let that land. The most successful Ferrari CEO in the company's history, the man who rebuilt the Scuderia and the road car division simultaneously, publicly proposed that this car should not bear the name.

This is not an aesthetic opinion. This is a brand verdict from the person who understands the brand better than anyone currently running it.

The actual mistake

It is worth being precise about what Ferrari got wrong, because "going electric" is not the answer.

Porsche went electric and produced the Taycan — a car that looks, drives, and feels like a Porsche. The DNA survived the powertrain transition because Porsche understood that electrification is a technical decision, not a philosophical one. You change what is under the body. You do not change what the body means.

Ferrari handed the interior of their most important car in decades — their first electric vehicle, the one that would define the brand's relationship with the future — to an outside studio whose entire aesthetic vocabulary was built at Apple. LoveFrom has never designed a car. Their guiding principle, by Ferrari's own admission, was "simplification, with smooth, pure shapes."

Simplification. For Ferrari.

Enzo Ferrari did not build the most emotionally charged automotive brand in the world through simplification. He built it through obsession, through excess, through the conviction that a car should make you feel something before you start the engine. The tension in a Ferrari — the slightly uncomfortable seating position, the instruments angled toward the driver, the sense that this machine was built for one purpose and everything else was a concession — is not accidental. It is the product.

The Luce simplified it away.

The venue problem

There is something almost poetic about the choice of Rome for the unveiling.

Ferrari won its first race in Rome in 1947 — the Ferrari 125 S at the Baths of Caracalla, driven by Franco Cortese. That is the origin story Ferrari invoked to frame the Luce as a new beginning. Seventy-nine years of history, back where it started.

But the 125 S was a racing car that happened to be road-legal. It was rawness and ambition made metal. Presenting its spiritual successor as a five-seat luxury sedan — wider than a Taycan, heavier than anything Ferrari has ever built, designed by the man who made the iPhone — in a Calatrava-designed sports complex, for an audience of financial analysts and lifestyle journalists, is not a return to origins.

It is the opposite.

What this is really about

Ferrari is a publicly traded company. It has been since 2015, when the Elkann family listed it on the New York Stock Exchange. Since then, the pressure has been consistent: grow the addressable market, expand the customer base, move upmarket into the ultra-luxury space where margins are protected and volumes can increase without diluting the brand.

The Purosangue was the first step — a Ferrari SUV that caused similar controversy and sold out immediately. The market rewarded it. The logic followed.

The Luce is the second step. It targets a buyer who currently spends €300,000 on a Bentley Flying Spur or a Rolls-Royce Ghost — someone who wants a statement, not a lap time. Someone for whom Jony Ive's name is a genuine selling point. Someone who will appreciate the iPad dashboard and the Apple Watch crown and will never take the car anywhere near Fiorano.

This is a rational financial strategy. It is also, over a long enough timeframe, brand suicide.

Luxury brands die from the top down. They do not collapse when the wrong people buy them. They collapse when the right people stop wanting them — when the people who defined the aspiration, who gave the brand its cultural weight, who made everyone else want to be associated with it, quietly look away.

Ferrari's audience of enthusiasts — the people who have spent forty years arguing about engine placement and tyre compounds and whether the F355 or the 360 was the better car — looked at the Luce and saw something that did not need the Prancing Horse.

Montezemolo said it out loud. Everyone else was thinking it.

The colour tells you everything

Ferrari presented the Luce in turquoise blue.

To understand why this matters, you need to understand where Ferrari's colours come from. At the dawn of international motor racing — the Gordon Bennett Cup, held between 1900 and 1905 — each competing nation was assigned a colour. France received blue. Germany white. Britain, having arrived late and found all colours taken, chose green as a tribute to its Irish hosts. Italy's colour became red: Rosso Corsa, racing red, earned in 1907 when Prince Scipione Borghese drove a crimson Itala from Peking to Paris across 9,000 miles of desert, steppe and mountain, arriving victorious in the French capital. Italy adopted the colour of his car in his honour. That red travelled from the Gobi Desert to Maranello, and stayed there for a century.

There is only one other colour acceptable for a Ferrari at an official presentation: yellow. Not as a marketing choice, but as a historical fact. Yellow is the colour of Modena — it has been since the Este Duchy, centuries before the automobile existed. Giallo Modena. The city's colour, the province's colour, the colour Ferrari uses because Maranello sits within its borders. When a Ferrari appears in yellow, it is a statement of provenance, of territory, of where it was born.

Turquoise is neither of these things. Turquoise is, historically, the colour associated with the Savoy dynasty — the royal house of the Piedmontese and, later, unified Italy's monarchy. And blue, as any historian of motor racing knows, is the colour of France. The Agnelli family were Piedmontese. John Elkann holds French as well as Italian citizenship. One hesitates to suggest that the choice of a turquoise-blue for the Luce's reveal was deliberate heraldic commentary. But if it was accidental, it is a remarkable accident. And if it was not — if someone in the room knew exactly what they were doing — then it is a provocation so refined it amounts to contempt.

The choice of colour at a car unveiling is never accidental. It is the single most deliberate visual decision a brand makes — the one that frames every photograph, every headline, every first impression. Ferrari chose to introduce their most important car in a generation in a colour that is not red, not yellow, and historically belongs to someone else entirely.

A Ferrari in turquoise blue is not a provocation. It is not a statement. It is a concession — the visual equivalent of telling your oldest customers that this one is not for them. Or perhaps it is something more pointed than a concession. Perhaps it is an inheritance (the Elkann's) made visible.

The giants who worked in the shadow

There is a deeper insult buried in the Jony Ive announcement, and it takes a moment to see it clearly. To see it properly, you need to begin not with Pininfarina but with the Futurists.

The Futurist movement, launched by Marinetti in 1909, built its entire aesthetic philosophy around the machine, the engine, the racing car. "A roaring automobile is more beautiful than the Winged Victory of Samothrace," Marinetti wrote — and meant it. The bolide, the racing machine at full speed, was not merely a vehicle but a new form of beauty, a new relationship between man, metal and velocity. This was not abstract theory. In Modena, it had a specific face: Enrico Prampolini, born in the city in 1894, who became one of the most significant figures of Italian Futurism, signing the Manifesto of Mechanical Art in 1922 and the Manifesto of Aeropittura in 1929. Prampolini understood that the machines emerging from the workshops of the Po Valley were not products — they were a cultural statement, an Italian declaration about what the future looked like and who was building it. The connection between Ferrari and the Futurist tradition is not metaphorical. It is biographical, geographical, philosophical. The racing car was the supreme object of Italian modernism before Ferrari had built a single one.

What followed, over the next eighty years, was the history of Italian automotive genius — a lineage of men who shaped not just cars but the entire visual language of speed and desire. Battista Pininfarina, who defined the long-bonnet, narrow-waist silhouette that became the template for every sports car that followed. Leonardo Fioravanti, who designed the Daytona, the Dino, the Berlinetta Boxer, the Testarossa — arguably the four most visually significant Ferraris ever built — and did so as a craftsman whose name most casual observers could not tell you. Marcello Gandini at Bertone, who influenced an entire generation of Ferrari competitors and collaborators. Sergio Pininfarina, who maintained the relationship between the coachbuilder and Maranello for six decades, through hundreds of models, with a consistency and depth of understanding that cannot be replicated by a studio that has never designed a car.

These men did not hold press conferences. They did not give TED talks. They did not have their design philosophy explained in brand manifestos and lifestyle magazine profiles. They came to Maranello, understood what Ferrari needed, and made it real. Their names appeared in small print, if at all. The car was the statement. The designer was the instrument.

Ferrari's decision to feature Jony Ive as a selling point — to market the Luce with his name in the headline and his philosophy quoted in the press release, as a mid-level brand in search of a premium selling point might do — reveals precisely how far the brand's confidence in its own identity has eroded. A Ferrari designed by Pininfarina did not need Pininfarina's fame to validate it. The car validated itself. Fioravanti designed four of the most beautiful objects of the twentieth century and remained, to the general public, essentially anonymous. That anonymity was not a failure of recognition. It was the correct order of things.

A Ferrari designed by the former Chief Design Officer of Apple, announced with his name above the car's name, is a Ferrari that no longer believes the Prancing Horse is enough.

That is the real failure. Not the turquoise. Not the four doors. Not the 122 kWh battery or the iPad dashboard or the Apple Watch crown on the infotainment panel.

The real failure is the insecurity that made all of those decisions feel, to someone in Maranello, like the right ones.

The name they hid, and what it meant

In 1971, at the Turin Motor Show, Ferrari unveiled the 365 GT4 BB — their first mid-engine production supercar, penned by Leonardo Fioravanti at Pininfarina. The car was so beautiful that during its development the entire team at Maranello had taken to calling it by a name they could not officially use: BB. Brigitte Bardot.

The tribute was genuine and unironic. These were engineers, craftsmen, and designers who looked at what they had built and reached for the most charged image of feminine beauty available to them. Sergio Pininfarina later confirmed it without embarrassment: "She was a splendid animal, a splendid woman." The BB designation was officially translated as Berlinetta Boxer — a technical alibi to preserve the romance beneath the nomenclature. Ferrari thought naming a car after a woman was simply not done. So they hid it. Kept it internal. Let the insiders smile and the public read the spec sheet.

That story contains an entire philosophy of what Ferrari was. The desire was present. The beauty was present. The connection between the car and the most visceral, unreasonable, physical aspects of human attraction was not just acknowledged — it was the starting point. A car so beautiful it named itself after Bardot. A car that made Sergio Scaglietti, who had built Ferraris by hand for twenty years, feel something new.

Now look at the Luce.

Five seats. Family dimensions wider than a Taycan. A turquoise blue that belongs in a design hotel lobby. An interior designed by the man who made the iPhone — smooth, pure, simplified. An object of admirable restraint and intellectual coherence that produces, in the people looking at it, no particular feeling at all.

The desexualisation of the Ferrari is not incidental. It is the product of a deliberate repositioning toward buyers for whom the erotic charge of the object — the low roofline, the impractical seating position, the engine note that arrives before the car does — is not a feature but an inconvenience. The new Ferrari customer has a family. The new Ferrari customer needs five seats. The new Ferrari customer wants Jony Ive's name on the dashboard and a colour that will not embarrass them at the school gate.

The men who called their prototype Brigitte Bardot would not recognise this calculation. They would not understand a Ferrari designed around the school run. They would look at the turquoise Luce and ask, quietly, what exactly it is that this car wants from you.

The answer, for the first time in Ferrari's history, is: nothing in particular.

The simplest marketing lesson

There is a principle in brand management so obvious it should not need stating: you do not hire the person who defined your competitor's aesthetic to design your most important product.

Apple and Ferrari are not competitors. But they occupy adjacent positions in the same cultural space — objects that people desire not for utility but for what they represent. When you invite Jony Ive into your design process, you are not getting a neutral collaborator. You are getting Apple's grammar, Apple's vocabulary, Apple's philosophy of what an object should feel like in your hands.

The result looks exactly like what it is: a Ferrari that wants to be an Apple product.

It is beautifully made. It is intellectually coherent. It has 1,036 horsepower and 60 new patents and a dedicated E-Building in Maranello.

And it has no business wearing the Prancing Horse.

Su Ferrari, la Luce, e come distruggere un marchio in una sola presentazione.

Esiste un particolare tipo di fallimento aziendale che accade soltanto ai grandi marchi. Non il fallimento dell'incompetenza — qualsiasi azienda può fallire per incompetenza. Questo è il fallimento di persone troppo intelligenti, troppo connesse, troppo convinte della propria visione per accorgersi che stanno smantellando ciò che erano state incaricate di proteggere.

Ferrari ha avuto quel fallimento il 25 maggio 2026, a Roma.

Cosa hanno presentato

La Ferrari Luce è una berlina completamente elettrica, quattro porte, cinque posti. Prezzo di partenza: 550.000 euro. Potenza: 1.036 cavalli su quattro motori. Interni: progettati da LoveFrom, lo studio creativo di Sir Jony Ive — l'uomo che ha dato al mondo l'iMac, l'iPhone e l'AirPod.

Sulla carta, questa è un'auto seria. Ferrari ha costruito una piattaforma dedicata a 880 volt da zero. Ha depositato 60 nuovi brevetti. L'ha assemblata in un nuovo E-Building a Maranello. Le credenziali ingegneristiche sono, come sempre con Ferrari, impeccabili.

Niente di tutto ciò conta.

Perché quello che Ferrari ha svelato a Roma non era una Ferrari. Era l'auto che Jony Ive avrebbe costruito se il Project Titan di Apple fosse sopravvissuto. Gli schermi hanno corone in stile Apple Watch. Il pannello dell'infotainment ha l'atmosfera di un iPad. Il Gorilla Glass, il linguaggio dei pulsanti e l'intera grammatica filosofica degli interni appartengono a Cupertino, non a Maranello.

E l'esterno? Hagerty l'ha definita "grezza, mal proporzionata e inappropriata." Bloomberg ha citato l'analista Pierre-Olivier Essig: "un mix tra una Honda Accord EV e una Tesla 3." Autoweek ha osservato che "nemmeno il giallo la salva."

Alla chiusura delle contrattazioni del 26 maggio, le azioni Ferrari erano in calo del 6%. Perdita massima infragiornaliera: 7,8%.

Il mercato ha detto quello che la stampa stava pensando.

Il momento Montezemolo

La mattina dopo il lancio, Luca di Montezemolo — l'uomo che ha guidato Ferrari dal 1991 al 2014 e presieduto all'era della F50, Enzo e LaFerrari — è salito sul palco dell'assemblea di Confindustria a Roma.

Ha suggerito a Ferrari di togliere il Cavallino Rampante dalla Luce.

Il CEO di Ferrari di maggior successo nella storia dell'azienda, l'uomo che ha ricostruito simultaneamente la Scuderia e la divisione auto stradali, ha pubblicamente proposto che questa vettura non dovrebbe portare quel nome.

Non è un'opinione estetica. È un verdetto sul marchio da parte della persona che lo conosce meglio di chiunque altro lo stia gestendo oggi.

Il vero errore

Vale la pena essere precisi su cosa Ferrari abbia sbagliato, perché "passare all'elettrico" non è la risposta.

Porsche è passata all'elettrico e ha prodotto la Taycan — un'auto che sembra, si guida e si percepisce come una Porsche. Il DNA è sopravvissuto alla transizione del powertrain perché Porsche ha capito che l'elettrificazione è una decisione tecnica, non filosofica. Si cambia ciò che sta sotto la carrozzeria. Non si cambia ciò che la carrozzeria significa.

Ferrari ha affidato gli interni della sua auto più importante degli ultimi decenni — il suo primo veicolo elettrico, quello che avrebbe definito il rapporto del marchio con il futuro — a uno studio esterno il cui intero vocabolario estetico è stato costruito ad Apple. LoveFrom non ha mai progettato un'auto. Il loro principio guida, per ammissione della stessa Ferrari, era "la semplificazione, con elementi stilistici che richiamano forme chiuse e linee lisce e pure."

La semplificazione. Per Ferrari.

Enzo Ferrari non ha costruito il marchio automobilistico più emotivamente carico del mondo attraverso la semplificazione. Lo ha costruito attraverso l'ossessione, l'eccesso, la convinzione che un'auto debba farti sentire qualcosa prima ancora di accendere il motore. La tensione in una Ferrari — la posizione di guida leggermente scomoda, gli strumenti inclinati verso il pilota, la sensazione che quella macchina sia stata costruita per uno scopo solo e tutto il resto sia una concessione — non è accidentale. È il prodotto.

La Luce l'ha semplificata via.

Il problema della sede

C'è qualcosa di quasi poetico nella scelta di Roma per la presentazione.

Ferrari vinse la sua prima gara a Roma nel 1947 — la Ferrari 125 S alle Terme di Caracalla, guidata da Franco Cortese. È l'origine story che Ferrari ha invocato per inquadrare la Luce come un nuovo inizio. Settantanove anni di storia, tornati dove tutto era cominciato.

Ma la 125 S era un'auto da corsa che per caso era anche omologata su strada. Era crudezza e ambizione fatte di metallo. Presentare il suo successore spirituale come una berlina di lusso a cinque posti — più larga di una Taycan, più pesante di qualsiasi Ferrari mai costruita, progettata dall'uomo che ha fatto l'iPhone — in un complesso sportivo firmato Calatrava, davanti a un pubblico di analisti finanziari e giornalisti lifestyle, non è un ritorno alle origini.

È l'opposto.

Di cosa si tratta davvero

Ferrari è una società quotata in borsa. Lo è dal 2015, quando la famiglia Elkann l'ha quotata alla Borsa di New York. Da allora, la pressione è stata costante: ampliare il mercato indirizzabile, espandere la base clienti, spostarsi verso l'ultra-lusso dove i margini sono protetti e i volumi possono crescere senza diluire il marchio.

La Purosangue è stato il primo passo — un SUV Ferrari che ha suscitato polemiche simili ma che Il mercato ha premiato.

La Luce è il secondo passo. Punta a un acquirente che oggi spende 300.000 euro su una Bentley Flying Spur o una Rolls-Royce Ghost — qualcuno che vuole un'affermazione, non un tempo sul giro. Qualcuno per cui il nome di Jony Ive è un autentico argomento di vendita. Qualcuno che apprezzerà il cruscotto stile iPad e la corona stile Apple Watch e non porterà mai l'auto vicino a Fiorano.

Questa è una strategia finanziaria razionale.

È anche, su un arco di tempo sufficientemente lungo, un suicidio di marca.

I marchi di lusso muoiono dall'alto verso il basso. Non crollano quando li comprano le persone sbagliate. Crollano quando le persone giuste smettono di volerli — quando coloro che hanno definito l'aspirazione, che hanno dato al marchio il suo peso culturale, che hanno fatto sì che tutti gli altri volessero essere associati ad esso, si voltano silenziosamente dall'altra parte.

Il pubblico di appassionati di Ferrari — le persone che hanno passato quarant'anni a discutere di posizionamento del motore, mescole di gomme e se la F355 o la 360 fosse l'auto migliore — ha guardato la Luce e ha visto qualcosa che non aveva bisogno del Cavallino Rampante.

Montezemolo l'ha detto ad alta voce. Tutti gli altri ci stavano pensando.

Il colore dice tutto

Ferrari ha presentato la Luce in blu turchese.

Per capire perché questo sia rilevante, bisogna capire da dove vengono i colori di Ferrari. Alle origini del motorsport internazionale — il Gordon Bennett Cup, disputato tra il 1900 e il 1905 — a ogni nazione partecipante veniva assegnato un colore. La Francia ricevette il blu. La Germania il bianco. La Gran Bretagna, arrivata tardi e trovati tutti i colori già assegnati, scelse il verde in omaggio agli ospiti irlandesi. Il colore dell'Italia divenne il rosso: il Rosso Corsa, guadagnato nel 1907 quando il Principe Scipione Borghese percorse in un'Itala cremisi 9.000 miglia da Pechino a Parigi attraverso deserti, steppe e montagne, arrivando vincitore nella capitale francese. L'Italia adottò il colore della sua vettura in suo onore. Quel rosso viaggiò dal deserto del Gobi a Maranello, e vi rimase per un secolo.

Esiste un solo altro colore accettabile per una Ferrari in una presentazione ufficiale: il giallo. Non come scelta di marketing, ma come fatto storico. Il giallo è il colore di Modena — lo è dal Ducato degli Este, secoli prima che l'automobile esistesse. Giallo Modena. Il colore della città, della provincia, il colore che Ferrari usa perché Maranello sorge entro quei confini. Quando una Ferrari appare in giallo, è un'affermazione di provenienza, di territorio, di dove è nata.

Il turchese non è nessuna di queste cose. Il turchese è, storicamente, il colore associato alla dinastia Savoia — la casa reale piemontese che governò l'Italia unita. E il blu, come ogni storico del motorsport sa, è il colore della Francia. La famiglia Agnelli era piemontese. John Elkann detiene la cittadinanza francese oltre a quella italiana. Si esita a suggerire che la scelta del blu turchese per la presentazione della Luce fosse un deliberato commento araldico. Ma se fosse accidentale, si tratterebbe di un accidente straordinario. E se non lo fosse — se qualcuno nella stanza sapesse esattamente cosa stava facendo — allora è una provocazione così raffinata da equivalere al disprezzo.

La scelta del colore alla presentazione di un'auto non è mai accidentale. È la decisione visiva più deliberata che un marchio fa — quella che inquadra ogni fotografia, ogni titolo, ogni prima impressione. Ferrari ha scelto di presentare la sua auto più importante di una generazione in un colore che non è rosso, non è giallo, e storicamente appartiene a qualcun altro.

Una Ferrari in blu turchese non è una provocazione. Non è un'affermazione. È una concessione — l'equivalente visivo di dire ai tuoi clienti più fedeli che questa non è per loro. O forse è qualcosa di più preciso di una concessione. Forse è un'eredità (quella degli Elkann) resa visibile.

I giganti che hanno lavorato nell'ombra

C'è un insulto più profondo nascosto nell'annuncio di Jony Ive, e ci vuole un momento per vederlo chiaramente. Per vederlo bene, bisogna cominciare non da Pininfarina, ma dai Futuristi.

Il movimento futurista, lanciato da Marinetti nel 1909, costruì l'intera propria filosofia estetica attorno alla macchina, al motore, all'auto da corsa. "Un'automobile ruggente è più bella della Vittoria di Samotracia," scrisse Marinetti — e lo pensava davvero. Il bolide, la macchina da corsa a piena velocità, non era semplicemente un veicolo ma una nuova forma di bellezza, un nuovo rapporto tra uomo, metallo e velocità. Non si trattava di teoria astratta. A Modena, aveva un volto preciso: Enrico Prampolini, nato in città nel 1894, che divenne uno dei protagonisti più significativi del Futurismo italiano, firmando il Manifesto dell'Arte Meccanica nel 1922 e il Manifesto dell'Aeropittura nel 1929. Prampolini capì che le macchine che uscivano dalle officine della Pianura Padana non erano prodotti — erano una dichiarazione culturale, un'affermazione italiana su come appariva il futuro e su chi lo stava costruendo. Il legame tra Ferrari e la tradizione futurista non è metaforico. È biografico, geografico, filosofico. L'auto da corsa era l'oggetto supremo del modernismo italiano prima che Ferrari ne avesse costruita una sola.

Ciò che seguì, nei successivi ottant'anni, fu la storia del genio automobilistico italiano — una stirpe di uomini che plasmarono non solo le auto ma l'intero linguaggio visivo della velocità e del desiderio. Battista Pininfarina, che definì la silhouette con cofano lungo e vita stretta diventata il modello per ogni auto sportiva successiva. Leonardo Fioravanti, che progettò la Daytona, la Dino, la Berlinetta Boxer, la Testarossa — probabilmente le quattro Ferrari visivamente più significative mai costruite — e lo fece come artigiano il cui nome la maggior parte degli osservatori casuali non saprebbe dirvi. Marcello Gandini da Bertone, che influenzò un'intera generazione di concorrenti e collaboratori di Ferrari. Sergio Pininfarina, che mantenne il rapporto tra la carrozzeria e Maranello per sei decenni, attraverso centinaia di modelli, con una coerenza e una profondità di comprensione che non possono essere replicate da uno studio che non ha mai progettato un'auto.

Questi uomini non tenevano conferenze stampa. Non facevano TED talk. Non avevano la loro filosofia di design spiegata in manifesti di marca e profili su riviste lifestyle. Venivano a Maranello, capivano cosa serviva a Ferrari, e lo realizzavano. I loro nomi apparivano in piccolo, quando apparivano. L'auto era l'affermazione. Il designer era lo strumento.

La decisione di Ferrari di presentare Jony Ive come argomento di vendita — di annunciare la Luce con il suo nome nel titolo e la sua filosofia nel comunicato stampa, come farebbe un marchio di medio livello in cerca di un punto di forza premium — rivela esattamente quanto si sia erosa la fiducia del marchio nella propria identità. Una Ferrari progettata da Pininfarina non aveva bisogno della fama di Pininfarina per legittimarsi. L'auto si legittimava da sola. Fioravanti progettò quattro degli oggetti più belli del Novecento e rimase, per il grande pubblico, sostanzialmente anonimo. Quell'anonimato non era un mancato riconoscimento. Era l'ordine corretto delle cose.

Una Ferrari progettata dall'ex Chief Design Officer di Apple, annunciata con il suo nome in evidenza sopra il nome dell'auto, è una Ferrari che non crede più che il Cavallino Rampante sia sufficiente.

Questo è il vero fallimento. Non il turchese. Non le quattro porte. Non la batteria da 122 kWh o il cruscotto stile iPad o la corona stile Apple Watch sull'infotainment.

Il vero fallimento è l'insicurezza che ha fatto sembrare, a qualcuno a Maranello, che tutte quelle decisioni fossero quelle giuste.

Il nome che nascosero, e cosa significava

Nel 1971, al Salone dell'Auto di Torino, Ferrari presentò la 365 GT4 BB — la sua prima supercar di produzione a motore centrale, disegnata da Leonardo Fioravanti per Pininfarina. L'auto era così bella che durante il suo sviluppo l'intero team di Maranello aveva preso l'abitudine di chiamarla con un nome che non potevano usare ufficialmente: BB. Brigitte Bardot.

Il tributo era genuino e non ironico. Erano ingegneri, artigiani e designer che guardavano ciò che avevano costruito e cercavano l'immagine più carica di bellezza femminile a loro disposizione. Sergio Pininfarina lo confermò in seguito senza imbarazzo: "Era uno splendido animale, una splendida donna." La sigla BB fu ufficialmente tradotta come Berlinetta Boxer — un alibi tecnico per preservare il romanticismo sotto la nomenclatura. Ferrari riteneva che dare a un'auto il nome di una donna fosse semplicemente fuori luogo. Così lo nascosero. Lo tennero interno. Lasciarono sorridere gli addetti ai lavori mentre il pubblico leggeva la scheda tecnica.

Quella storia contiene un'intera filosofia di ciò che Ferrari era. Il desiderio era presente. La bellezza era presente. Il legame tra l'auto e gli aspetti più viscerali, irrazionali, fisici dell'attrazione umana non era solo riconosciuto — era il punto di partenza. Un'auto così bella da nominarsi da sola come Bardot. Un'auto che fece sentire qualcosa di nuovo anche a Sergio Scaglietti, che aveva costruito Ferrari a mano per vent'anni.

Ora guardate la Luce.

Cinque posti. Dimensioni familiari più larghe di una Taycan. Un blu turchese che appartiene alla hall di un design hotel. Interni progettati dall'uomo che ha fatto l'iPhone — lisci, puri, semplificati. Un oggetto di ammirevole sobrietà e coerenza intellettuale che produce, nelle persone che lo guardano, nessuna sensazione particolare.

La desessualizzazione della Ferrari non è incidentale. È il prodotto di un riposizionamento deliberato verso acquirenti per i quali la carica erotica dell'oggetto — il tetto basso, la posizione di guida impraticabile, la voce del motore che arriva prima dell'auto — non è una caratteristica ma un inconveniente. Il nuovo cliente Ferrari ha una famiglia. Il nuovo cliente Ferrari ha bisogno di cinque posti. Il nuovo cliente Ferrari vuole il nome di Jony Ive sul cruscotto e un colore che non lo imbarazzi al cancello della scuola.

Gli uomini che chiamavano il loro prototipo Brigitte Bardot non riconoscerebbero questo calcolo. Non capirebbero una Ferrari progettata intorno alla corsa scolastica. Guarderebbero la Luce turchese e chiederebbero, sottovoce, cosa esattamente questa macchina voglia da te.

La risposta, per la prima volta nella storia di Ferrari, è: niente di particolare.

La lezione di marketing più semplice

Esiste un principio nel brand management così ovvio che non dovrebbe nemmeno essere necessario enunciarlo: non assumi la persona che ha definito l'estetica del tuo concorrente per progettare il tuo prodotto più importante.

Apple e Ferrari non sono concorrenti. Ma occupano posizioni adiacenti nello stesso spazio culturale — oggetti che le persone desiderano non solo per utilità ma per ciò che rappresentano. Quando inviti Jony Ive nel tuo processo di design, non stai ottenendo un collaboratore neutrale. Stai ottenendo la grammatica di Apple, il vocabolario di Apple, la filosofia di Apple su come un oggetto dovrebbe sentirsi nelle tue mani.

Il risultato sembra esattamente quello che è: una Ferrari che vuole essere un prodotto Apple.

È fatta magnificamente. È intellettualmente coerente. Ha 1.036 cavalli e 60 nuovi brevetti e un E-Building dedicato a Maranello.

E non ha nessun diritto di portare il Cavallino Rampante.

Why Autocracies Won

In September 2019, Boris Johnson prorogued the British Parliament. Five weeks of parliamentary session, suspended by executive decree, justified by the constitutional convention that governments may seek a prorogation at any point. The Supreme Court ruled the action unlawful in a unanimous judgment — eleven judges, zero dissents. The Prime Minister had attempted to bypass the legislature because the legislature was in his way. The courts stopped him. The system, on that occasion, worked.

What made the episode significant was not the prorogation itself but the reasoning behind it — the reasoning that a significant portion of the public found, if not exactly acceptable, then at least comprehensible. The democratic process had produced a deadlock. The democratic process was generating friction. The democratic process was, in the most literal sense, getting in the way of getting things done. And the question that the prorogation raised — not loudly, not in the terms in which it would need to be raised honestly, but unmistakably — was whether the friction was worth it. Whether the checks, the balances, the procedural protections, the institutional vetoes were producing outcomes proportionate to the delay and the cost they imposed.

The question was not new. It has been building for thirty years. What is new is that we now have a rigorous answer, and the answer is uncomfortable.

The argument that capital requires democracy to flourish was one of the organizing assumptions of the postwar liberal order. The Bretton Woods framework, the Marshall Plan, the construction of the European project, the entire institutional architecture of Western-led globalisation rested on the premise that economic openness and political freedom were mutually reinforcing — that the prosperity produced by liberal capitalism would sustain the political will for liberal democracy, and that liberal democracy would in turn produce the rule of law, the contract enforcement, the stable property rights framework that productive capitalism required. The two were inseparable. You could not have one without the other.

What the past thirty years have demonstrated, with a clarity that the architects of that order never anticipated and their successors have been slow to acknowledge, is that this premise was historically contingent rather than structurally necessary. Capital does not require democracy. It requires stability, rule of contract, and the absence of the kind of friction that slows decision-making, constrains accumulation, or redistributes returns. When democracies provide these conditions efficiently, capital routes through them. When they do not — when democratic accountability produces regulatory complexity, when electoral cycles produce policy uncertainty, when organized labour produces wage floors, when environmental regulation produces compliance costs — capital routes elsewhere.

The elsewhere, for the past thirty years, has increasingly been China.

China's accession to the World Trade Organisation in December 2001 was the moment the assumption broke openly. The architects of the accession — the Clinton and Bush administrations, the WTO membership, the multinational corporations that lobbied for it — operated on the explicit premise that economic integration would produce political liberalisation. History would resolve the tension between capitalism and authoritarianism in capitalism's favour. The Chinese Communist Party would, under the pressure of market forces and the aspirations of an expanding middle class, gradually converge toward the political forms that Western liberal democracies had developed.

The opposite happened. China grew its economy at rates no democratic system has sustained. It built infrastructure at speeds no democratic planning process has matched. It coordinated industrial policy at a scale that no coalition of private actors operating within a market system has achieved. It absorbed the manufacturing base that democratic economies had developed across a century, employed the labour that democratic economies had displaced, and accumulated the capital that democratic economies had released — all while maintaining a political system that made none of the concessions the accession's architects had predicted. Capital flows toward efficiency, toward lower costs, toward faster decisions, toward the absence of the procedural protections that democratic systems exist to maintain. The architects of liberal democracy built the banks — the institutional framework that gave global capital its productive form. They then removed those banks in the name of the river's freedom. The river found the most efficient channel available. That channel ran through Beijing.

The standard defence of democracy against this argument has always been the long game. Yes, autocracies coordinate faster. Yes, they execute more decisively. Yes, they eliminate the friction that slows democratic governance. But — and this was the argument that Western liberals produced with some confidence for most of the postwar period — they also eliminate the conditions for genuine innovation. The dissent. The failure. The lateral thinking. The distributed experimentation that only a relatively open society permits. The innovation premium was democracy's structural compensation for its slowness. Silicon Valley, not a state planning bureau, built the internet. The West, not the Soviet system, won the technological race that determined the Cold War's outcome. Human cognitive freedom, it turned out, was not just a political value but an economic and strategic asset. It was worth the friction.

This argument is now being dismantled. Not refuted — dismantled. From two directions simultaneously, and by the same technology.

The foundation models, the large language models, the infrastructure of artificial intelligence were developed inside liberal democracies — Stanford, MIT, Google DeepMind, Anthropic, OpenAI. The innovation premium produced the technology. The question is what happens next. Authoritarian states are now deploying and scaling AI with a speed and coordination that democratic systems — with their regulatory debates, their distributed decision-making, their institutional caution, their electoral cycles — cannot match. The innovation advantage produced the tool. The efficiency advantage now determines who deploys it fastest and at what scale. China's state capacity for coordinated AI deployment is, on current evidence, substantially greater than the capacity of any democratic government to coordinate a comparable effort. The West invented the engine. It is not obvious that the West wins the race.

The second movement is more fundamental. If the machine can generate novel combinations, test hypotheses, and produce scientific and creative outputs at scale — if it can do, in other words, a substantial portion of the cognitive work that the innovation premium depended on — then the distributed human creativity that justified democracy's slowness becomes structurally less necessary. The strategic asset that compensated for democratic friction is being automated away at precisely the moment when the efficiency argument for authoritarian coordination is at its strongest. The long game argument assumed that human innovation required human freedom. That assumption is no longer secure.

There is a further dimension that the standard political debate has not yet reached, and that is worth naming clearly because it will become unavoidable within a decade. If artificial intelligence concentrates productive capacity in a sufficiently small number of hands while simultaneously displacing human labour across entire categories of work — not the cyclical displacement of previous technological transitions, which created new categories of employment to absorb the displaced, but a structural displacement from which the jobs do not return because the machines do the work permanently, at zero marginal cost — then the political question of the coming decades will not be growth. It will be redistribution. At a scale and speed that liberal democratic institutions were not designed to manage.

The property rights architecture, the constitutional protections for accumulation, the non-majoritarian constraints that the postwar settlement embedded in its institutional framework — all of these were designed to prevent the kind of forced redistribution that the architects of that order had watched destroy European societies in the first half of the twentieth century. They are now, potentially, the obstacle to the only correction adequate to the problem. The institutional forms that could address structural mass unemployment combined with extreme concentration of AI-generated wealth — mandatory redistribution of AI returns, the socialisation of AI infrastructure, state capacity for forced economic reorganisation — require precisely the centralised power and the subordination of property rights to collective need that the postwar constitutional framework was designed to prevent.

The structural irony is not subtle. The system the architects built, having concentrated productive capacity beyond any previous historical precedent while rendering human labour structurally surplus, may require for its own correction precisely the institutional forms their ideology spent a century ruling out. The democratic architects built the banks. The river found its level. And the flood that followed may only be containable by the methods of those who never believed in banks at all.

None of this is an argument for autocracy. The historical record of centralised state models as instruments of human wellbeing is catastrophic and documented. The point is not that authoritarian systems are better. The point is that liberal democracy is losing the arguments it used to win — the efficiency argument, now settled in autocracy's favour by three decades of comparative evidence; and the innovation argument, now being dismantled by the technology that liberal democracies themselves produced. What is left, as a justification for accepting the friction, the slowness, the procedural complexity that democratic governance requires, is the argument from values: that human dignity, political freedom, and the rule of law are worth the economic cost, regardless of the competitive consequences.

That argument is true. It is also, on current evidence, losing.

The communities the river left behind — the deindustrialised regions, the displaced workers, the populations whose economic and cultural identity were simultaneously dissolved by the globalisation project — have drawn their own conclusions about the value of the institutional framework that produced their situation. They have produced the unmediated figures, the executive overreachers, the leaders who treat the democratic process as an obstacle to getting things done. They have done so not because they are irrational but because they have correctly identified that the system as it currently operates is not working in their interests, and that the people who designed and maintain it have consistently prioritised its theoretical virtues over their concrete conditions.

The architects built something remarkable. They then dismantled the conditions that made it work, in the name of the freedom of the thing they had built. And the question that the communities they left behind are now asking — the question that the next decade of AI-driven concentration will make impossible to avoid — is whether the remarkable thing was ever really for them at all.

The River Does Not Have Preferences

In December 2025, Xi Jinping brought Emmanuel Macron to a two-thousand-three-hundred-year-old irrigation system in Sichuan province. He was not offering a lesson in hydraulic engineering.

The Dujiangyan irrigation system was built around 256 BC by Li Bing, governor of Shu under the Qin dynasty. It is the oldest functioning irrigation infrastructure in the world — continuously operational for over two thousand three hundred years. It works by cutting a channel through a mountain to divide the Min River into an inner channel for irrigation and an outer channel for flood control. No dam. Not blockage but division. Not opposition but redirection. The river's own force is the instrument of its management. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It still irrigates the Chengdu Plain today.

In December 2025, Xi Jinping brought Emmanuel Macron — the French president who had recently imposed pension reform on his own parliament by executive decree — to Dujiangyan. Standing at the site, Xi spoke. The spirit that built this system, he said, can be extended to every aspect of human endeavour. Managing water and governing a country draw from the same wisdom: reading the force of what flows, working with it rather than against it, making sound decisions to get things done. The man standing beside him had recently gotten things done by bypassing his own legislature. Xi was not offering a lesson in hydraulic engineering. He was making a comparison.

The observation that matters most about this scene is not that China is authoritarian. Everyone knows China is authoritarian. The observation that matters is that the global capital system does not care. This is the argument that the third chapter of my book builds — and it is the argument I want to develop here, because I think it is the one that the current conversation about geopolitics consistently fails to make.

Capital is not ideological. It does not prefer democracy. It does not prefer autocracy. It routes toward efficiency — toward the conditions that allow it to accumulate most productively. Where democratic governance is efficient, it routes through democracies. Where authoritarian governance is more efficient, it routes through autocracies. The river does not have preferences. It has physics.

This is not a new observation in the abstract. What is new is the evidence we now have for how it operates in practice. The thirty years between 1945 and 1975 — what the French call les Trente Glorieuses, the thirty glorious years — were the period in which democratic governance and capital accumulation reinforced each other most effectively. The welfare state was not the enemy of capital accumulation. It was its precondition: a healthy, educated, broadly consuming population that provided the labour, the demand, and the political stability that productive capitalism required. The architects of the postwar settlement understood this. They built the banks that gave the river its productive form.

Then they removed the banks. Four times, across four decades.

In 1971, Nixon ended the Bretton Woods system and freed capital from the gold standard and fixed exchange rates. Capital could now move across borders at a scale and speed that the postwar architects had deliberately prevented. In the 1980s, Thatcher and Reagan dismantled the financial regulation that had kept capital tied to productive investment in domestic economies. In 1989 and the years following, the fall of communism produced what felt like a triumphalist confirmation: liberal democracy had won, the management of capital was a solved problem, the remaining constraints on its movement were relics of a Cold War that no longer existed. And in 2001, China entered the World Trade Organisation — the moment when the global capital system gained access to the world's largest reserve of cheap disciplined labour, housed inside a political system with no unions, no independent judiciary, no democratic accountability, and an extraordinary capacity for long-term state coordination of economic development.

Each dissolution was individually defensible. Each one made sense within the logic of the system at the moment it was made. Taken together, they produced a capital system that had been freed from every constraint that tied it to the democratic political forms that had built it. The river had been given its freedom. It found the most efficient channel available. That channel ran through Beijing.

This is what Xi was showing Macron at Dujiangyan. Not a threat. Not a boast. A demonstration. The river's own force is the instrument of its management. You do not oppose the river. You read it. You redirect it. You make sound decisions to get things done — and if the legislature is slower than the decision requires, you bypass the legislature. The man standing beside him nodded and took notes.

The standard response to this observation is that authoritarian systems are ultimately less stable than democratic ones — that the absence of accountability, the suppression of information, the concentration of decision-making in a small number of hands produces brittleness rather than strength, and that the long arc of history bends toward liberal democracy. This may be true. The history of authoritarian systems gives some support to it. But it is not the question the capital system is asking. The capital system is not asking what form of governance is most stable over a century. It is asking what form of governance is most efficient over a quarter. And on that timescale, over the past three decades, the answer has been increasingly clear.

China grew its economy at rates no democratic system has sustained. It built infrastructure at speeds no democratic planning process has matched. It coordinated industrial policy at a scale that no coalition of private actors operating within a market system has achieved. It did all of this while maintaining political stability that its own historical experience suggested was unlikely. The capital system noticed. It routed accordingly.

The architects of the postwar democratic order are now confronting what they built. The institutions they created to manage capital — the WTO, the IMF, the network of bilateral investment treaties, the global financial system — were designed to spread the benefits of liberal capitalism to developing economies and thereby, the theory went, to spread liberal democracy. The theory was not entirely wrong. But it missed the most important variable: the capital system's indifference to the political form of its host. It assumed that economic integration would produce political convergence toward democracy. What it produced instead was the demonstrated superiority of certain authoritarian models at managing capital accumulation — and the corresponding discovery, by capital itself, that democracy is not a precondition for productivity but a constraint on it.

This is the architect's paradox. The system they built — the global capital order of the late twentieth century — turned out not to need them. They built the banks and then dismantled them in the name of the river's freedom. The flood was not a betrayal of the project. It was its completion.

Standing at Dujiangyan in December 2025, with the man whose government had just demonstrated that executive bypass of democratic process is an efficient tool for getting things done, Xi Jinping was not gloating. He was describing the situation. The river's own force is the instrument of its management. The architects built the system. The river found its level. Capital flooded the global system — moving with the force and scale that the removal of the banks had unleashed, finding new channels in the manufacturing centres of Asia and the emerging economies that absorbed what the democratic states had released. The water was not absent from the world. It had simply left the communities that built the banks behind. What the architects did not anticipate — what the third chapter of my book attempts to trace in full — is what that drought does to those communities, and what those communities are now doing to the democratic institutions the architects built.

The controversy surrounding the Italian government’s proposed revision of secondary school philosophy guidelines is not merely academic. It reveals a deeper anxiety about culture, ideology, and the fragility of democratic legitimacy in an age of political exhaustion.

The proposal, advanced under Education Minister Giuseppe Valditara and the broader cultural orientation of Giorgia Meloni’s government, would de-emphasise or exclude from official guidelines and recommended lists figures such as Karl Marx, Antonio Gramsci, Baruch Spinoza, Schopenhauer, and Kierkegaard, while shifting greater emphasis toward Italian and conservative intellectual traditions. This includes a relative reweighting for Giovanni Gentile, the philosopher most closely associated with Mussolini’s fascist regime. (Gentile is already a standard part of the Italian liceo philosophy curriculum, typically taught in the final year alongside his actual idealism and its political consequences. The proposed shift is therefore less about rehabilitation from obscurity than about recalibrating emphasis—potentially presenting his thought more affirmatively while reducing structured engagement with Marxist and certain other critical traditions.) Spinoza and others appear largely as collateral in the broader effort to prioritise a more nationally rooted canon.

Whether the final reform takes this exact shape or not, the symbolic significance is already clear: the state is attempting to intervene directly in the cultural formation of future generations by redefining which traditions deserve prominence in the classroom.

This is a risky move.

There is a profound irony in targeting Gramsci in particular. Gramsci is not simply another Marxist philosopher; he is the thinker who explained more clearly than anyone else how cultural hegemony functions—how institutions, education, language, and media shape the boundaries of what a society experiences as “common sense.” To de-emphasise or sideline him from curricula comes close to a textbook illustration of his central thesis.

The irony becomes even sharper when one considers Giovanni Gentile. Gentile was not merely an academic philosopher; he was one of fascism’s principal intellectual architects and the author of the 1923 school reforms designed to align education with the spiritual and political aims of the regime. He was assassinated in 1944 by communist partisans while serving as a minister in the Nazi-backed Salò Republic—a political killing tied to his active role in the regime, not an abstract execution for his writings alone. Yet the fact remains: ideas were understood to be dangerous enough to kill for, because philosophy does not remain confined to books but shapes institutions, identities, and the moral imagination through which societies understand themselves.

Italy therefore risks staging a strange historical inversion: marginalising the theorist of cultural hegemony while recalibrating the status of the philosopher of state-directed consciousness.

But the proposal also misunderstands the world in which it operates.

This is no longer the twentieth century, when states and institutions could plausibly regulate the intellectual formation of youth through schools, television, and official channels. Technology has shattered that monopoly forever. Young people today encounter political identity through algorithms, subcultures, podcasts, influencers, encrypted communities, online archives, and digital mythologies that escape institutional control almost entirely.

The likely result of de-emphasising certain traditions is therefore the opposite of what is intended. Restriction produces symbolic power. Prohibition creates fascination. A thinker excluded from official legitimacy does not disappear; he returns with the allure of forbidden knowledge.

The state may still control curricula, but it no longer controls cultural circulation.

This anxiety must also be understood geopolitically. The rise of China has generated within Western societies a diffuse fear of renewed ideological competition — a suspicion that liberal democracy may no longer be the most effective political vehicle for directing the flow of capital. In this context, Marxism once again becomes symbolically threatening, even where it has limited practical relevance to contemporary Chinese governance.

Yet this fear rests partly on a conceptual confusion.

Modern China operates a hybrid system of state-managed capitalism, technological coordination, export-driven industrial policy, and nationalist centralisation, deeply integrated into global markets. It retains Marxist-Leninist ideological framing and one-party rule but diverges significantly from classical Marxism or the emancipatory communist horizon imagined by twentieth-century European leftist thought. (That the Chinese state continues to officially invoke a Marxist lineage does not erase these practical differences; Western concern is therefore less about communism per se than about a capable geopolitical rival that claims that lineage.)

As argued in the fourth chapter of my book The Dream of Never, the globalisation of capital was accompanied by the hope that national liberal democracies would scale and spread alongside it. Instead, the opposite occurred. The rise of non-majoritarian institutions, the European Commission’s monopoly on legislative initiative, supranational arbitration, independent central banks, and the transfer of key economic decisions beyond the reach of the ballot hollowed out the political substance of Western democracies. The very mechanisms intended to embed liberalism in a globalised economy ended up proving that autocracies can manage capital at global scale with fewer internal frictions and greater decisiveness than democracies slowed by accountability. The architects of the postwar order inadvertently demonstrated that authoritarian governance can channel capital’s river more efficiently. In trying to secure liberalism through supranational structures, Western democracies have increasingly come to resemble the autocracies they once sought to tame.

The fear, then, is less about communism itself than about Western decline and erosion of relative power.

Under such conditions, legitimacy erodes. And when legitimacy erodes, democracies often begin imitating aspects of the systems they once criticised. Surveillance expands. Cultural management intensifies. Dissent becomes suspect. Political stability increasingly depends not only on persuasion, but on the regulation of acceptable discourse.

This is the deeper danger hidden inside proposals such as these.

In attempting to defend liberal democratic order against ideological threats, democracies risk internalising authoritarian instincts themselves. The fear of illiberalism becomes illiberal. The defence of openness produces selective exclusion. The protection of democratic culture begins to resemble the management of consciousness.

The irony is devastating: in trying to resist autocracies abroad, Western democracies are becoming culturally prescriptive at home.

And yet the strategy is likely doomed even on its own terms. Information no longer moves vertically from institutions to citizens. It moves horizontally, globally, and chaotically. Attempts to discipline thought through exclusion no longer produce consensus; they produce fragmentation, resentment, and intellectual countercultures impossible to predict or govern.

A confident democracy does not fear philosophers.

It argues with them.

It teaches Marx alongside Hayek, Gramsci alongside Gentile, because democratic maturity depends on confrontation with difficult ideas rather than insulation from them.

If democracies lose faith in their citizens’ ability to encounter dangerous thought without collapsing into extremism, then the crisis runs deeper than any philosopher could have caused.

The Proportions Are Perfect for the Space

On Banksy's Waterloo Place statue, Westminster City Council's warm welcome, and what it means when the institution congratulates the gesture that was supposed to unsettle it.

This is an addendum to The Bud That Never Blossomed, which argued that the system no longer represses cultural threat — it absorbs it before it can mature. What follows is a case study, delivered by events ten days ago.

On the morning of 29 April 2026, Londoners walking through Waterloo Place found a new statue among the monuments to King Edward VII and the Crimean War dead. A suited man, holding a large flag. The flag blows back into his face, covering his eyes. He steps forward confidently off the edge of the plinth. He cannot see where he is going because the thing he is carrying for pride has blinded him. The base of the plinth bears a signature. Banksy had installed it overnight.

By the following morning the BBC had confirmed the attribution. Galleries went live. Commentators gathered. The piece was identified as a critique of blind patriotism — timed, the press noted, to coincide with King Charles III's state visit to Washington, where he addressed Congress in defence of NATO. The placement was observed to be pointed: Banksy's anti-establishment gesture installed among the monuments of British imperial and military history, the subversive work taking its place in the civic landscape of St James's.

Philip Mould, the London art dealer, appeared on camera. What he found clever about the work, he said, was that Banksy had got the proportions perfectly right for the space.

Westminster City Council, in a statement to the BBC, described the piece as a striking addition to the city's vibrant public art scene. A representative for the Mayor of London noted that Banksy has a great ability to inspire people from a range of backgrounds to enjoy modern art.

There is a word for what happened in Waterloo Place on the morning of 30 April 2026. The word is not subversion. The word is not transgression. The word is not even irony, which would require some distance between the gesture and its reception. The word is ratification. The institution looked at the work placed there to unsettle it and said: the proportions are perfect for the space.

Consider what this requires. A man whose identity is officially unknown installs a large bronze statue overnight in one of London's most controlled and historically significant public spaces. The work makes a political statement about nationalism. The response from the political administration of that public space is to welcome it as a vibrant civic contribution. The BBC mobilises its arts correspondents. The art market's representatives appear on camera to praise the technical execution. The Mayor's office notes the work's democratising effect on public engagement with modern art. The entire apparatus of the cultural establishment — the broadcaster, the dealer, the elected administration — performs, in coordinated and apparently sincere sequence, its appreciation of a gesture that was designed to embarrass it.

This is not the establishment being naive or slow. It is the establishment being competent. The absorption is complete precisely because it is enthusiastic. The work is not tolerated. It is celebrated. It is not marginalised as a provocation but welcomed as an asset. Westminster City Council does not say: we note this intervention and will seek its removal. Westminster City Council says: striking addition, vibrant scene. The gesture of critique has been converted, overnight, into a contribution to the very cultural landscape it purported to challenge.

The argument in the earlier essay was that the system no longer suppresses cultural threat through repression — it absorbs it before it can fully form, converting the radical gesture into a lifestyle category, the critical stance into content. Banksy has long been the canonical example: rebellion as brand, transgression that appreciates in value the moment it is completed. The Sotheby's self-shredding that doubled the work's market value. The stencils that became luxury prints. The anonymous street artist whose anonymity is itself a product, scrupulously maintained, commercially productive, protected by lawyers.

But Waterloo Place represents something beyond even that. Consider what placing a large bronze statue in that location actually requires. Waterloo Place is managed by the Crown Estate, surveilled, patrolled, and subject to significant planning controls. A bronze statue is not a stencil and a can of spray paint. It is a fabricated object that takes weeks to produce, requires a vehicle capable of transporting significant weight, demands lifting equipment, and needs multiple workers to install on a plinth in the early hours of the morning without being stopped. The operation is logistically complex. It is professionally managed. It requires either official permission — quietly granted, quietly unacknowledged — or a deliberate institutional decision to observe, and not intervene, and then celebrate what was technically unauthorised. Neither possibility is consistent with the mythology of the lone rebel and the spray can. The transgression required an infrastructure. And the infrastructure required, at minimum, the passive cooperation of the institutions the transgression was designed to critique. The earlier examples showed absorption happening gradually, through the market's mechanisms — the gallery, the auction house, the print run. What happened on 30 April 2026 was instantaneous and institutional. The state apparatus of cultural administration did not need the market to process the gesture and return it as a product. It processed it directly, in real time, across every television channel, through the voices of the people whose civic authority the work was intended to question. The proportions are perfect for the space. A striking addition to the city's vibrant public art scene.

The man on the plinth cannot see where he is going because the flag covers his face. It is a clear image and a clear target. Blind patriotism: the proud march toward catastrophe, eyes covered by the very symbol being carried. The critique is not subtle. It does not need to be subtle — Banksy's method has never been subtlety. What it needed, to function as critique rather than decoration, was an institution capable of discomfort. What it got was an institution that had already incorporated the gesture into its own self-image as a vibrant, inspiring, proportionally sophisticated public art scene.

Art cannot be more content, more shallow, more completely assimilated than this. The bud was not killed before it blossomed. It was handed a plinth, praised for its proportions, and welcomed to the neighbourhood.

On how a dictatorship accidentally created the conditions for one of the twentieth century's most fertile cultural experiments, and what the growth imperative did to it next.

Pliny the Elder recorded the name in the first century AD. The Greeks had called them the Pityussae — islands of pines — for the forests that covered them. The pine trees and the gnarled juniper, the sabina, introduced by the Phoenicians and cultivated for its extraordinarily hard wood, were the first thing anyone noticed about the place. They are still there. Some of the junipers at Cala Bassa, on the island's west coast, are a hundred years old. They are classified as cultural heritage under Spanish law and cannot be touched. The beach club sets its Balinese beds in their shade.

The trees are the right place to start, because what happened to Ibiza is the story of a place whose aura — whose specific cultural gravity — was produced by conditions that had nothing to do with commerce, and then consumed by a commerce that could not have existed without them. The aura is now eroding. The trees are still there. The question is how long the trees can outlast what is being sold in their shade.

The first wave of artists and intellectuals arrived in the 1920s and 1930s — European modernism discovering that the Mediterranean was cheap, warm, and sufficiently far from the noise of the metropolis to think. What drew them was not a destination. It was an absence. Ibiza in 1930 was rural, developmentally lagging, and almost entirely separate from the modern world. The roads were bad. The ferry connections were infrequent. The peasant economy produced olives, almonds, and salt. There was almost nothing to do, which was precisely the point.

Among those who passed through or stayed were Walter Benjamin, Albert Camus, Le Corbusier, Joan Miró, Tristan Tzara, and the architect Josep Lluís Sert. These were not tourists. They were people looking for a place outside the circuits of cultural production — outside the galleries and the salons and the critical apparatus — where something might form before it was named. Ibiza offered that, in the specific way that only genuinely marginal places can: not by providing infrastructure but by providing the absence of it.

Then the Spanish Civil War came, and the isolation deepened. Franco's dictatorship closed Spain to the world. But something paradoxical happened. Ibiza was impoverished enough, remote enough, and sufficiently resistant in spirit to the regime's values that it became a refuge — first for those fleeing fascism, then, in the 1950s, for a different kind of fugitive. The beatniks arrived. Jack Kerouac's generation, or those adjacent to it, discovered that you could live in Ibiza for almost nothing, that the local population was tolerant, and that the Guardia Civil largely left foreigners alone. Ibiza was politically opposed to the Franco regime in its bones, but the opposition expressed itself as passivity rather than confrontation — which meant the island became, in one writer's description, the Casablanca of the mind.

Among those who settled there in the early 1960s was Elmyr de Hory, the Hungarian art forger, who threw lavish parties and sold fake Picassos until Orson Welles made a film about him — F for Fake, shot partly on Ibiza. His neighbour and friend was Clifford Irving, who would later fabricate a biography of Howard Hughes, an act of imposture so audacious it became its own form of art. The beatnik community of Ibiza in those years was full of this quality — people doing things that no institutional framework had authorised or even named, on an island that was too poor and too marginal to care.

The hippies arrived next, in the mid-1960s, and the character of the island shifted. The introspective bohemianism of the beatniks gave way to something louder and more communal. The hippie movement — Carolyn Cassady, who had been part of the Beat scene, called it a vulgarisation at ground level of the Beat movement, with more light and colour and media repercussion — founded craft markets, established communes, and began, almost without intending to, to contribute to the island's emerging tourist economy. Franco died in 1975. The 1970s were a time of relative openness. The counterculture deepened its roots.

What is important about this sequence is not the mythology — the free love, the sunsets, the cosmic significance attributed to dancing in an olive grove — but the structural conditions that made it possible. Ibiza in the 1960s and 1970s was cheap, which meant people with no money and no institutional backing could live there. It was marginal, which meant what they did had years to develop before visibility arrived. It was tolerant — structurally, politically, temperamentally — which meant the specifically non-conformist, the specifically weird, the specifically unwanted by mainstream cultural production could find a place to be. The music that would eventually give Ibiza its global identity as a clubbing destination grew directly from this: Pacha, the island's first club, opened in June 1973 in a converted farmhouse on the outskirts of Ibiza town — white clay exterior, open-air backyard, a swimming pool. In an era before mobile phones, people danced until the sun came up and went swimming at sunrise. No brand, no marketing strategy, no business plan beyond the immediate summer. The specific atmospheric quality that today makes a table at Pacha cost what it costs was produced in those conditions: deliberate cheapness, deliberate obscurity, a community of people with no commercial intention whatsoever.

This is how culture works. It requires the years before visibility. It requires the cheap space, the marginal geography, the community of practice that can develop density and specificity without being captured by the market. Every serious cultural formation of the twentieth century followed the same logic: Manchester in 1978, Seattle in 1989, Berlin after the Wall. Ibiza followed it across several decades, accumulating layer upon layer of cultural sediment — the beatniks, the hippies, the early club scene, the producers and DJs who came in the 1980s and 1990s and turned the farmhouse dances into something global. And then the market arrived, as it always does, to monetise what the years of obscurity had produced.

It should be said that the market also amplified and distributed. The club economy that followed did not only extract — it made available to millions something that would otherwise have remained a private experience of a remote island. That is the growth imperative’s genuine offer. The question is what it costs.

The Cala Bassa Beach Club — CBbC — sits on one of the most beautiful coves on the island's west coast, surrounded by Mediterranean pine forest and the hundred-year-old gnarled junipers that Pliny recorded and the Phoenicians cultivated. The club covers effectively the entire beach. Balinese beds are arranged in the shade of the ancient trees. The pricing structure is sophisticated: the municipal regulation caps the price of ordinary sun loungers, but premium products — the beds, the gazebos, the private areas — fall outside the regulated category, as markets always find ways to step around the ceiling while staying beneath the law. A free public area is maintained, as Spanish coastal law requires. In 2025 the Spanish government introduced formal daily visitor quotas for Ibiza beaches, a belated institutional acknowledgement that the growth imperative had reached the edge of what the island could absorb.

The irony is precise. The beach club is selling the atmosphere — the quality of the light through ancient branches, the specific texture of a cove that has been beautiful since before Rome existed, the sense of being somewhere that accumulated its character across two thousand years of specific history. It did not create this atmosphere. It could not create it. The aura of Cala Bassa is the residue of the Phoenician junipers, the Greek naming, the Roman recording, the centuries of agricultural poverty, the beatniks and hippies who arrived because it was cheap and marginal, the club culture that Pacha began in 1973 with people who had no commercial intention whatsoever. The market arrived after the accumulation was complete and began charging for what it had not made.

This is the standard operation. It happened in Notting Hill and in Brooklyn and in Hackney and in every neighbourhood that culture colonised before capital followed. The specific quality that makes a place worth going to — the aura, the atmosphere, the sense of specific human life accumulated over time — is produced by conditions of cheapness and marginality that the market systematically destroys in the act of monetising them. Remove the cheap rent and the artists leave. Remove the artists and the aura dissipates. Remove the aura and what remains is a surface, beautiful perhaps, but without the interior depth that gave people a reason to go there in the first place. You cannot manufacture what the trees at Cala Bassa took a hundred years to become.

There is a broader argument here, which is the subject of a book I have been writing across fourteen years of watching this process from inside one of its more revealing positions — the design and materials industry, which sits at the precise intersection of cultural production and commercial extraction, close enough to see both clearly.

The argument is that what has happened to Ibiza is not a local story about a Mediterranean island. It is the same logic operating at every scale simultaneously — cultural, political, anthropological, and finally biological. The growth imperative does not stop at the edge of a beach. It does not stop at the edge of a city. It does not stop at the edge of the self. The platform economy colonises the interior of the psyche with the same logic that colonised the farmhouse dances at Pacha. The transhumanist programme targets the biological limits of the self with the same logic that removed the price caps and built the Balinese beds in the shade of heritage-protected trees. In each case the thing being consumed is the specific quality that creaturely limitation produced — the depth, the urgency, the specific weight of existence in a place and a body that will not last forever.

The trees at Cala Bassa are still there. The regulation protects them. Two thousand years of specific history cannot be fully extracted in a single season. But the erosion is visible and it is accelerating. What Ibiza is becoming — what it has been becoming since the 1990s, when the club economy arrived and the price of a farmhouse stopped being cheap — is a demonstration of what the growth imperative produces when it completes its work. Not destruction. Something more insidious: a beautiful surface, impeccably maintained, from which the interior has been quietly removed. The shell preserved. The substance moved elsewhere.

We are being led into war. Not with a declaration, not with a parliamentary vote, not even with an honest public debate.

Dmitry Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of Russia's Security Council, followed immediately on X:

"The list must be taken literally: the publication of production sites for drones and other military equipment in Europe is a register of potential legitimate targets for the Russian armed forces. Sleep well, European partners."

This is not a threat buried in a diplomatic communiqué. It is a public register of targets, published by a nuclear power, naming factories in Poland, Germany, the Czech Republic, Latvia, Denmark, Lithuania, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom — and Italy.

And our governments said nothing....

Italy is not a neutral party in this conflict. It became a strategic rear — without a vote, without a debate, without a single Italian citizen being asked.

A Legitimate Target?

Here is the question no EU official will ask aloud:

If a country is at war and its weapons are produced on foreign soil, are those foreign production sites legitimate military targets?

Under international law, the answer is uncomfortable: objects that contribute directly to military action — including factories producing drones, ammunition, or components — can be attacked if they are not exclusively civilian in nature.

Russia has already answered the question for us. Medvedev did not publish a diplomatic protest. He published a targeting register and told us to sleep well.

No Democratic Consent

This is the core of the problem. Not a single European citizen has been asked whether we are willing to become a front-line military logistics hub.

The European Commission, the European Council, and the rotating presidencies operate with near-zero democratic accountability on foreign and defence policy. There are no referendums. No national ratification. No transparent red lines.

Instead, we were moved incrementally:

First, financial aid
Then, defensive weapons
Then, training missions
Then, hosting weapons production

At no point was the public asked: Are you willing to accept the risk of military retaliation on European soil?

The Escalation Trap

Once these factories are accepted as a legitimate part of Ukraine's war effort, the logic becomes automatic:

Russia strikes a drone production site in Poland, Italy, or the Czech Republic. The targeted country invokes NATO Article 5. The alliance is at war with Russia — not because a member state was invaded, but because a weapon factory was hit.

Who made that choice? Not the Polish, Italian, or Czech people. Not a pan-European democratic vote. A handful of unaccountable officials who never clearly explained that economic support had quietly become military hosting.

That is not leadership. That is a trap — and we are already inside it.

What Must Happen

Full transparency — every EU citizen has the right to know exactly which facilities on their national territory are producing military equipment for a warring party
Democratic consent — no hosting of weapons production or military infrastructure without a national or EU-wide mandate
Red lines — our governments must define publicly what would constitute an unacceptable escalation and what would trigger direct involvement

Silence is complicity. Our institutions are choosing silence because debate would mean admitting they have already crossed the line without asking us.

We are no longer on the sidelines. We are the rear. And the first hits will come faster than anyone is willing to admit.

The Bud That Never Blossomed

On the end of cultural novelty, the death of the avant-garde, and what the machine inherits from a landscape it didn’t kill — but completed.

There is a feeling circulating among those who pay attention — not panic, not nostalgia exactly, but something closer to a quiet recognition. The feeling that something in culture has run its course. That the novelties of today are the platitudes of yesterday, repackaged with a new typeface and distributed at scale. That what we call innovation is mostly recombination, and that the avant-garde, across every field simultaneously, has gone silent.

This essay is an attempt to name that feeling precisely — and to ask whether it signals an ending, an interregnum, or something structurally new and irreversible.

“The past is never dead. It is not even past.”¹ The commodity, however, makes sure it is recycled.

Part OneThe Diagnosis: Jameson, Fisher, and the Stalled Clock

The foundational diagnosis belongs to Fredric Jameson.² In his 1984 essay on postmodernism, Jameson argued that cultural production under late capitalism had lost something essential: the capacity to produce genuine historical consciousness. Modernism, for all its difficulty, was always an attempt to represent the unrepresentable totality of social experience. Postmodernism abandoned that attempt and replaced it with pastiche — the imitation of dead styles, the cannibalization of the past, a perpetual present with no horizon.

Mark Fisher extended this diagnosis into the 21st century and gave it a sharper emotional register.³ Drawing on Derrida’s concept of hauntology⁴ — originally developed to describe how Marx’s spectre haunts liberal capitalism precisely because it was never properly buried — Fisher argued that contemporary culture is not progressing but circling. We are haunted not by the past itself but by the futures the past promised and capitalism foreclosed. The sounds, the forms, the political possibilities that were supposed to arrive, and didn’t.

The evidence is everywhere and it is relentless. A song from 2005 and a song from 2020 are indistinguishable in ways that would have been impossible comparing 1965 to 1980. Our most celebrated filmmakers — Villeneuve, Anderson, Nolan — are supreme craftsmen building cathedrals in a style already established. There is no Breathless moment, no rupture that makes previous work look naive. Cinema has learned to be beautiful the way a museum has learned to be quiet.

Television offers the purest symptom. Stranger Things⁵ is hauntology made entertainment product: a show whose entire aesthetic is constructed not from the 1980s but from the feeling of having watched films set in the 1980s. It does not reference a decade, it references the nostalgia for a decade. The ghost of a ghost. And its global success is not incidental — it is the market confirming that the simulation of lost feeling is now more commercially viable than feeling itself.

Part TwoThe Bud That Never Blossomed

The old model of cultural suppression was repression. A threatening idea appeared, the dominant culture crushed it, and the repression left a scar — a memory, a martyr, an underground current that could return with force. Censorship confirmed the danger of what it silenced. It made martyrs. It kept the wound open.

What operates today is something earlier and cleaner than repression. The system no longer waits for the threat to mature and then crushes it. It identifies the gesture of potential rupture — the new sound, the new aesthetic, the new political form — and immediately provides it a market. The bud does not get cut. It gets a record deal. A gallery show. A brand partnership. A TED talk.

Which is more lethal, because it produces the appearance of flourishing. The artist believes they are speaking truth to power while the platform monetizes the authenticity of that belief. The radical aesthetic becomes a lifestyle category. The critical gesture becomes content. Banksy⁶ is the canonical example: rebellion as brand, irony as financial instrument, transgression that appreciates in value the moment it is completed. But Banksy is merely the visible tip. The mechanism runs through everything.

Deleuze and Guattari⁷ called this process reterritorialization — every line of flight, every genuine escape from existing coordinates, gets recaptured and mapped back onto the system it tried to exit. They still believed in the possibility of rupture, of a deterritorialization that moved fast enough to outrun capture. What has changed is the speed. The capture is now near-instantaneous. The processing time between emergence and absorption has collapsed to the point where genuine underground development — the years of obscurity that produced punk, techno, hip-hop — is structurally impossible. The bud is killed before it blossoms, not by violence but by early monetization. Not by silence but by noise at scale.

Nowhere is this more visible than in the spaces that were supposed to be the last territories of formal experimentation: the design weeks and biennales that punctuate the calendar of every major city. Milan, London, Dubai, Seoul — events that began as genuine forums for critical design thinking have become, with striking consistency, trade fairs for luxury greenwashing and wellness branding. The Salone del Mobile increasingly indistinguishable from a high-end shopping experience. Concepts arriving pre-digested. The critical gesture sponsored. The protest about consumerism funded by the brands being protested. Here, on the exact territory where the messages relevant to design and material culture were supposed to be formed, we find the triumph of shallow spectacle — the bud cultivated to look wild, the disruption professionally produced.

The bud is now cultivated to look wild. Manufactured to simulate the unmanufactured. The disruption, professionally produced.

III

Part ThreeCulture vs. Content

The distinction between culture and content is not aesthetic snobbery. It is structural.

Culture

Leaves a scar

Culture ruptures. It arrives with friction, demands something from the receiver, changes the coordinates of what is possible after it. It has a before and an after. Walter Benjamin⁸ called this the aura — not a mystical property of the object but the trace of its embeddedness in human time, place, and mortality. It is remembered not as an experience but as a threshold.

Content

Fills the gap

Content soothes. It is optimized for the 15% novelty that feels fresh without demanding recalibration. It arrives, is consumed, and is replaced by more content. It leaves no residue. Benjamin’s aura is not merely absent — it is actively undesirable, because aura creates friction, and friction reduces engagement.

The platform economy did not set out to destroy culture. It set out to maximize engagement. Culture, it turned out, was bad for engagement — too slow, too demanding, too likely to produce discomfort without immediate resolution. Content was better. And so the infrastructure of culture was quietly rebuilt around content’s logic, and the distinction between the two dissolved so gradually that most people inside the system can no longer see it.

Design flattened into conversion optimization. Music compressed into playlist-ready units. Cinema sorted into IP franchises and prestige trauma. Visual art organized around pre-approved themes — identity, ecology, institutional critique welcomed by the institutions being critiqued — delivered in aesthetics that are late modernism on autopilot. Even ostensibly countercultural films, those made explicitly to rupture the mainstream, arrive already processed. One Battle After Another⁹ achieves a kind of Pynchonian atmosphere through sheer technical accumulation while ultimately leaving the coordinates of cinema exactly where it found them. A beautiful object. Not a threshold. The messages narrowed. The spiral tightened.

Part FourThe 70s Had No Future But Had Territory

The comparison to the British 1970s is instructive precisely where it breaks down. The “no future” of punk was a scream with coordinates — a specific enemy, a legible despair, a geography of resistance. A kid in Sheffield could be genuinely unknown for three years, developing something in a rehearsal space or a squat that the market had not yet named. Joy Division¹⁰ could only have come from Manchester in 1978. That specificity was not incidental. It was generative. The darkness had texture, and the texture produced form.

What that era had, which this one does not, is territory. Physical, social, economic territory where culture could form outside the market’s gaze. That territory has been systematically destroyed — not by conspiracy but by the combined force of gentrification, platform enclosure, and the collapse of anonymity. The cheap cities, the abandoned warehouses, the marginal spaces where scenes incubated for years before surfacing: priced out, developed, co-opted, or simply made visible too soon by the devices in everyone’s pockets.

The digital space arrived promising new territory. And briefly, in the early internet’s ungoverned margins, it delivered. But the platform enclosure happened fast. What took physical cities decades of gentrification happened to digital space in roughly ten years. The commons became the feed. The feed became the product. The product optimized against depth. What remains are the very margins — small servers, obscure forums, communities in languages the algorithm hasn’t prioritized — and even these are shrinking.

The 70s had no future but believed in the possibility of one. That belief — furious, desperate, sometimes wrong — was the energy. The present condition is different because the foreclosure of the future has become ambient, invisible, the water we swim in. And the generation growing up inside it has no memory of when it was open. The scream that doesn’t know it is a scream yet is the most unsettling sound of all.

Part FiveWhat the Machine Inherits

Artificial intelligence did not cause this condition. But it completes it with an almost satirical precision. Large language models and generative systems are trained on the archive — they are hauntology made machine, pure recombination with no outside, no rupture, no memory of promises unkept. Derrida’s spectre, the ghost that returns because it was never properly buried, becomes the training dataset. The ghost becomes the algorithm.

More disturbing still: the system now operates prospectively. It does not merely absorb what emerges — it has learned to simulate emergence itself. Micro-genres are generated by platforms before organic scenes can form around them. Trend forecasting aestheticizes subcultures before the communities that would have produced them are old enough to have formed. The bud is not just killed before it blossoms. It is now cultivated from the beginning to look wild.

And yet the machine exposes something that the theory had not quite articulated. When a generative system produces something that no human has made before — and occasionally, undeniably, it does^A–C — our frameworks for recognizing novelty fail entirely. Not because the thing is not new, but because the source is wrong. Duchamp’s urinal¹¹ was radical because the art world eventually agreed to ratify it. Without that ratification it was plumbing. Novelty was never an objective property of the cultural object. It was a social agreement, brokered by institutions — academies, critics, galleries, labels — among people with shared stakes in the outcome.

The machine has no stakes. And this is not a technical limitation that better models will resolve. It is constitutive. Which means the real question is not whether the machine can produce culture, but whether culture was ever about the object at all — or whether it was always about the mortal, situated, desperate beings who made it for each other.

Part SixBodies, Territory, and the Conditions of Culture

To produce culture, three conditions appear to be irreducible. And all three are now under simultaneous attack.

Condition One

A mortal body

The urgency of cultural production comes from mortality. Heidegger’s being-toward-death¹² — the awareness of finitude as the ground of authentic existence — is what gives the artist no choice but to make. The machine generates from a position of complete indifference to time. It cannot run out. And that indifference is not a bug. It is what the machine is.

Condition Two

A territorial body

Culture is sweated out of specific geography. Joy Division’s sound is Manchester’s post-industrial decay made audible. The machine stands nowhere. Its training data is everywhere, which means it is from nowhere, which means it produces the aesthetic average of all places — which is the aesthetic of no place, which is exactly what we are drowning in.

Condition Three

Social ratification

Culture is not just produced but received by other mortal, territorial beings who recognize something of their own situation in it. This is Benjamin’s aura in its deepest sense. The emotion that makes a record devastating is not in the record. It is in the listener who finds their own finitude reflected back.

The machine fails all three conditions simultaneously — not by deficiency but by nature. Which suggests a definition: culture is what mortal, territorial beings make for each other from the specific pressure of their existence. Everything else, however sophisticated, is content.

The logical conclusion of this argument is seductive and almost impossible: to produce culture again, disconnect and disappear. Find the spaces outside the circuit. But voluntary disconnection is a luxury gesture. It requires resources — time, money, alternative social infrastructure. The artist who goes off-grid does so from a position of having already been on-grid successfully enough to afford the exit. The gesture of retreat always contains the infrastructure it claims to escape. Thoreau at Walden Pond¹³ was two miles from Concord and his mother did his laundry.

What about genuinely unknown geographies? The middle of Africa, the interior of Asia, communities structurally excluded from the platform economy rather than romantically retreating from it? Something is still forming in these places. Amapiano¹⁴ came from South African townships — genuinely marginal, genuinely territorial, produced by communities under specific social pressure. Within three years it was a global Spotify genre, a sound available for any producer anywhere to sample. Distance still buys time, but less and less of it. The cultural emergency services arrive faster with every iteration. And looking to peripheral geographies as reserves of authentic production carries its own colonial history that cannot be ignored — the Western avant-garde scanning the periphery for raw material that the centre has exhausted is a very old story, and not a clean one.

Part SevenWill They Ever Need Culture Again?

The last question is the darkest. The generation now growing up has been formed entirely on content — on the frictionless, the immediately rewarding, the algorithmically optimized. Not as an occasional supplement but as the primary medium of experience, relationship, and self-understanding. The question is not whether this generation is less intelligent or less sensitive. The question is whether the category of culture remains legible to them at all.

Need is shaped by what you know. If your nervous system calibrates to content’s rhythms — the perpetual present, the zero friction, the instant resolution — then culture, which requires patience and discomfort and the willingness to be genuinely changed by an encounter, begins to feel like a malfunction. Too slow. Too demanding. No clear payoff. The absence of culture is not experienced as loss because loss requires the memory of presence.

This is the completion of what Fisher called capitalist realism.³ It is no longer that alternatives are unimaginable. It is that the need for alternatives has been dissolved. The anesthetic is working.

And yet. The body still exists. And the body has requirements that content cannot satisfy — proximity, duration, the irreducible presence of other mortal beings in a shared space. These are not culturally constructed preferences. They are biological facts. Every generation told it has transcended the need for embodied experience has eventually discovered it has not. The content generation will encounter grief, illness, political catastrophe, the death of someone irreplaceable. Culture was always where you went when the content failed you. That function has not disappeared. It is waiting.

The question is whether the encounter with content’s limits produces genuine cultural rupture or merely produces a new content category called “authenticity” — which is, of course, what the system is already preparing. Wellness. Slowness. Analog revival. Cottagecore. The commodification of the uncommodified, packaged and delivered before the need it claims to answer has fully formed.

If there is a seed forming below the speed of commodification — in spaces too marginal, too embodied, too specifically mortal to be worth monetizing yet — it would be invisible by definition. The moment it becomes visible it enters the circuit. Which means if it exists we cannot point to it. Which is either the last remaining structural guarantee of its survival, or the most elegant feature of the trap.

What is clear is this: culture required bodies with endings, places with textures, and agreements between people with something at stake. The machine has none of these things. Neither does the feed. Naming what has been lost, and why, and at whose hands — that is where it begins. Or where it ends. In 2026, the difference is harder to see than it has ever been.

Cases — The Machine and the Ratification Problem

Case A — Visual Art, 2022

Jason Allen, Théâtre D’Opéra Spatial

Allen’s Midjourney-generated image won the Colorado State Fair fine arts competition. The critical response is the case study: the objection was never that the image lacked novelty — several judges acknowledged it was unlike anything they had seen. The objection was that the source was wrong. The work was excluded from the category of art not on aesthetic grounds but on procedural ones. The institution protected the social agreement by changing the terms rather than engaging the object. Novelty was present. Ratification was withheld.

Case B — Music, 2021

The Completion of Beethoven’s 10th Symphony

The AI music team led by Ahmed Elgammal at Rutgers University completed Beethoven’s unfinished 10th Symphony from his surviving sketches. In controlled listening tests, trained musicologists could not reliably distinguish the AI-completed sections from what Beethoven had written. The classical music world’s response was not to engage the result but to reject the premise — completion by machine was declared categorically incommensurable with composition, regardless of what the ear heard. Again: novelty undeniable, ratification refused. The gatekeeping was structural, not aesthetic.

Case C — Platform Logic, Ongoing

Spotify Micro-Genres: Escape Room, Indie Sleaze, and the Pre-emptive Map

Cases A and B describe a machine producing something and an institution refusing to ratify it. This case is structurally different and more sinister. Spotify’s recommendation algorithm generates genre categories — Escape Room, Indie Sleaze, Chillwave, hundreds of others — not by identifying existing scenes but by clustering acoustic and metadata similarities and then naming the pattern as if it were a movement. The genre exists before the scene. The label precedes the music it describes. The territory is drawn before anyone arrives. This is Deleuze and Guattari’s reterritorialization without even the pretence of a prior line of flight: the map is made first, and culture is invited to fill it in.

The show’s visual and sonic language draws not from the 1980s directly but from the cinema of Spielberg, Carpenter, and King as filtered through decades of retrospective appreciation — making it a simulation of nostalgia rather than nostalgia itself.

Banksy (b. 1974, identity unconfirmed). British street artist whose works have sold at auction for millions of pounds. The 2018 Sotheby’s self-shredding of Girl with Balloon — staged as an act of anti-market rebellion, which immediately doubled the work’s market value — is the definitive demonstration of transgression as financial instrument.

Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari, Anti-Oedipus: Capitalism and Schizophrenia (Les Éditions de Minuit, 1972) and A Thousand Plateaus (1980). The concepts of deterritorialization (escape from fixed codes and territories) and reterritorialization (recapture by the system) describe the fundamental mechanism of capitalism’s relationship to cultural dissent.

Walter Benjamin, “The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction” (1935), in Illuminations, ed. Hannah Arendt (Schocken Books, 1969). Benjamin’s concept of the aura — the unique presence of a work embedded in its specific time, place, and tradition — and his analysis of how reproduction destroys that aura while potentially democratizing art, remains one of the most generative frameworks in cultural theory.

Paul Thomas Anderson, One Battle After Another (2025), loosely adapted from Thomas Pynchon’s Vineland (1990). Anderson’s filmography — from Boogie Nights (1997) to The Master (2012) and Phantom Thread (2017) — represents perhaps the clearest example in contemporary cinema of supreme formal mastery deployed within, rather than against, inherited cinematic language.

Joy Division, active Manchester 1976–1980. Unknown Pleasures (Factory Records, 1979), produced by Martin Hannett. The band’s sound — post-punk abstraction shaped by the specific texture of post-industrial Manchester — is the paradigm case of culture that could only have emerged from a specific geography at a specific historical moment. After the death of singer Ian Curtis, the remaining members continued as New Order.

Marcel Duchamp, Fountain (1917). A commercially purchased urinal submitted to the Society of Independent Artists exhibition under the pseudonym R. Mutt. Rejected at the time, subsequently ratified by the art world as one of the most significant gestures in 20th-century art. The gap between the object and its ratification — and the institutional labour required to close that gap — is precisely the argument made here about novelty as social agreement.

Martin Heidegger, Being and Time (Sein und Zeit, 1927). Heidegger’s analysis of Sein-zum-Tode (being-toward-death) argues that authentic existence requires confronting finitude rather than fleeing into the anonymous “they-self” (das Man). Applied here: the urgency of genuine cultural production is inseparable from the maker’s mortality.

Henry David Thoreau, Walden; or, Life in the Woods (Ticknor and Fields, 1854). Thoreau’s account of two years of voluntary simplicity at Walden Pond, Concord, Massachusetts — two miles from town, with regular visits home — is the founding myth of voluntary disconnection as cultural practice, and its founding contradiction.

Amapiano: a South African music genre that emerged from Gauteng townships in the mid-2010s, characterized by log drum basslines, jazz-influenced piano, and a distinctive sub-bass texture. Developed largely outside mainstream industry channels before achieving global visibility circa 2020–2022. Its absorption into the global playlist economy within years of its emergence is the clearest recent example of the acceleration of cultural capture.

Then, in a single, staggering week, the entire news cycle was hijacked by the most dramatic event imaginable: a full-scale war with Iran. For many, the sequence no longer feels like a coincidence, but a chillingly familiar page from a dystopian screenplay.

The Epstein Scandal that Wouldn't Go Away

The trouble for the Trump White House began in earnest on February 24, 2026. History provides several glaring examples:

· Bill Clinton (1998): Facing the impending Monica Lewinsky scandal and impeachment, President Clinton launched cruise missile strikes on Iraq in December 1998. The strikes began just one day after the House issued a report accusing him of "high crimes and misdemeanors". Critics at the time accused him of using the military as a political shield.

· Donald Trump (2020): Facing his first impeachment trial for pressuring Ukraine to investigate Joe Biden, President Trump ordered a drone strike that assassinated Iranian General Qassem Soleimani. Reports emerged that Trump felt "pressure to deal with" the general from GOP senators crucial to his impeachment trial, with the strike openly discussed as a way to shore up political support.

· Argentina (1982): In a classic case of diversionary war, the Argentine military junta invaded the Falkland Islands to rally nationalist sentiment and distract from a collapsing economy and brutal domestic repression.

Each of these instances shows the same pattern: a leader under intense domestic pressure chooses the ultimate tool of political theater—a foreign war.

The timeline for the current crisis is damningly tight.

The idea that a sex scandal might be the very thing that finally gave Israel the green light it has craved for a generation is both galling and tragically absurd.

🌍 A Harrowing and Incredibly Dangerous Reality

What makes this situation so deeply harrowing is that "Operation Epic Fury" is not a simulation. The stakes are real. The conflict has the potential to ignite a regional inferno, drawing in Hezbollah, the Houthis, and other Iranian proxies across the Middle East. As of April 2026, the operation is already being described as an "epic blunder" as Iran refuses to capitulate. The world is now teetering on the edge of a wider war that could have devastating global consequences—all while the political firestorm over the Epstein files continues to consume Washington.

Last Remark: Where Is the Grand Strategy?

For years, we were told that any major US military action against Iran was part of a larger chess game—a necessary prelude to containing China. The logic went: secure the Middle East, break Tehran’s nuclear ambitions, and free up American resources for the real showdown in the Pacific. That was the sober, realist argument.

But watching this unfold—the withheld Epstein files, the First Lady's anguished denial, the suspiciously timed "Operation Epic Fury"—one is forced to ask a far more disturbing question. What if there never was a grand strategy? What if the elaborate theories about pivoting to Asia, about securing global supply chains, about a coherent long-term vision were always just a comforting fiction?

What if the only real agendas on the table are, and have always been, the survival of a single American politician and the decades-long obsession of a foreign ally? Israel wanted this war. Donald Trump needed a distraction. Everything else—the talk of China, of democracy, of American leadership—may have been little more than smoke. If that is true, then the most powerful nation on earth is not being guided by geopolitical brilliance. It is being dragged into a catastrophic conflict by a sex scandal and a client state's vendetta. That is not grand strategy. That is a nightmare dressed up as foreign policy.

The opening months of 2026 have exposed a profound realignment in the global order. The U.S. capture of Nicolás Maduro on January 3 and the launch of Operation Epic Fury on February 28—culminating in the killing of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and widespread strikes on Iranian nuclear, missile, and leadership targets—appear, at first glance, as separate operations aimed at regime change, counter-narcoterrorism, and nuclear prevention. Yet a growing body of strategic commentary points to an emerging, if opportunistic, grander design: a pincer movement designed to sever China's strategic lifelines and erode its network of partners.

This is not merely about Caracas or Tehran. It is increasingly about Beijing.

To grasp the architecture, recognize a longstanding pattern in U.S. foreign policy: two distinct partisan "roads" to containing China's rise, each rooted in ideology but sharing the same endpoint.

The Two Roads to Beijing: A Partisan Divide

For decades, Washington has viewed China's ascent as the primary long-term challenge. Democrats and Republicans have agreed on the goal—containing or rolling back Beijing's influence—but diverged sharply on the preferred path.

The Democratic approach has emphasized the northern route: weakening Russia as China's key Eurasian partner and strategic rear. The logic holds that a stable, powerful Russia enables China's access to energy, military tech, and a secure land flank. Thus, the post-Cold War playbook—NATO expansion, color revolutions, and the sustained proxy support for Ukraine—sought to bleed Russia economically and militarily, rendering it too damaged or dependent to reliably back Beijing.

The Republican approach has favored the southern route: targeting Iran to choke China's energy arteries. Rooted in Cold War containment and post-9/11 priorities, this views the Persian Gulf as the global energy choke point. By confronting Tehran—through sanctions, strikes, or regime pressure—Washington can disrupt the flow of discounted oil that fuels China's industrial economy, particularly via the Strait of Hormuz.

These were once parallel, often competing tracks. The second Trump administration has begun to converge them—though not always by design, and with significant reversals.

The Trump Realignment: From Parallel to Converging Jaws

The northern jaw represents a sharp reversal of Democratic strategy. Rather than continuing to bleed Russia via Ukraine, Trump has pursued pragmatic outreach to Moscow. Recent Trump-Putin calls (including discussions on ending the Iran conflict quickly and Ukraine prospects) and signals of potential sanctions relief on Russian oil amid the Hormuz disruptions reflect an attempt to peel Russia away from its "no-limits" partnership with China. The goal: neutralize Moscow as a spoiler in a potential Pacific crisis, perhaps by dangling relief from Ukraine pressures or shared influence. Russia's war-weariness—exacerbated by years of prior U.S./Western support for Kyiv—creates an opening, even if deep mistrust lingers.

The southern jaw applies the classic Republican playbook with full force. Operation Epic Fury has not only targeted Iran's nuclear and missile programs but also degraded its naval assets, leadership (including Khamenei's death on Feb. 28), and energy-export capabilities. The Strait of Hormuz remains contested, with Iranian closures and U.S. naval escorts creating volatility. For China—historically reliant on Iranian crude (often at steep discounts)—this directly threatens industrial supply lines, forcing diversification or stockpiling under pressure.

The January 3 strike in Venezuela (Operation Absolute Resolve), capturing Maduro on narco-terrorism charges and enabling a transition with oil-sector privatization and sanctions relief, adds a hemispheric bonus: it removes a minor but symbolic Chinese partner in the Americas while boosting global supply alternatives.

The Russian Vector: Wounded and Courted

Russia remains China's largest alternative oil supplier (over 17% of imports in recent years), but it is a wounded one—overstretched in Ukraine, economically strained, and desperate for relief. This very weakness, inflicted partly by prior Democratic-led policies, now makes Putin more amenable to U.S. overtures. Moscow has criticized U.S. actions in Iran while avoiding escalation, and recent calls suggest willingness to discuss de-escalation paths. Yet flipping Russia fully remains uncertain: historical grievances run deep, and Putin may simply play for time, extracting concessions without fully abandoning Beijing.

On paper, the converging pressures look formidable. In practice, they carry severe dangers.

Military overstretch: The surge of F-35s, Patriot batteries, THAAD systems, and other assets to the Middle East has depleted stocks needed for Indo-Pacific contingencies. Allies express concern that resources diverted to Epic Fury weaken deterrence elsewhere.
Resource dependencies: Advanced U.S. weapons rely on critical minerals (gallium, rare earths) dominated by China, creating a paradoxical vulnerability.
Russian unreliability: Can Putin be trusted? After years of perceived Western attempts to undermine Russia, any deal may prove fragile or illusory.
Chinese resilience: Beijing's response has been measured—condemning the strikes, urging ceasefires, and avoiding direct involvement—while accelerating self-sufficiency in energy (renewables, stockpiles) and diversifying suppliers. Social media shows frustration with Iran's overreach, but no panic. China appears prepared for partial isolation, betting on endurance.

Conclusion

In 2026, U.S. actions are converging the two historical roads to Beijing into something resembling a scythe-like pincer: diplomatic outreach to a weakened Russia in the north, kinetic/economic pressure on Iran (and opportunistic gains in Venezuela) in the south. Whether by grand design or opportunistic alignment under Trump, the effect is to squeeze China's strategic space.

Yet the scythe's handle may prove slippery. The blade dulls amid Middle East attrition, critical dependencies loop back to China, and the courted Russian bear remembers old wounds. The outcome hinges not just on battlefields in Tehran or frozen lines in Donbas, but on American economic staying power, Russian pragmatism, and a dragon that—though increasingly alone—remains far from helpless.

Strikes have hammered Iranian leadership compounds in Tehran, nuclear-related sites like Natanz, missile infrastructure, and even symbolic government buildings. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is dead. Iranian retaliation has already hit Israel, Gulf states, and U.S. facilities, with oil prices spiking and global markets tumbling.

This isn’t just another tit-for-tat exchange. It’s a strategic inflection point. And while the immediate tactical coordination between Washington and Jerusalem is undeniable, we must be honest about a deeper truth that too many in Western capitals prefer to ignore: Israeli strategic priorities do not always overlap with American or broader Western ones. On the contrary, when U.S. and European foreign policy effectively gets subordinated to Israeli objectives, it risks damaging our credibility, economic stability, and long-term influence on the world stage.

The Immediate Context: A Joint Campaign, But Whose War Is It Really?

President Trump has framed the strikes as pre-emptive necessity — knocking out Iran’s nuclear ambitions, missile capabilities, and navy before they could threaten the U.S. or its allies. Israeli officials, including Prime Minister Netanyahu, echo the same line while emphasizing the existential threat to the Jewish state. On paper, alignment looks perfect.

Yet look closer at the timeline and rhetoric. Israel was reportedly planning unilateral action; the U.S. decision to join and expand the operation came after Netanyahu’s government signaled it would proceed regardless. Trump himself has pushed back against accusations that Israel “dragged” America in, which tells you the narrative was already circulating. Iranian retaliation is now targeting not just Israel but U.S. bases, embassies in the Gulf, and shipping lanes. The Strait of Hormuz is under threat. Oil supertankers are seeing record rates.

For Israel, the calculus is straightforward and survival-driven: neutralize an existential foe that has spent decades funding proxies (Hezbollah, Hamas, Houthis) encircling it. Regime change in Tehran, or at minimum the permanent crippling of its nuclear and missile programs, is a core national interest. No Israeli leader can afford to bet on diplomacy alone after October 7, 2023, and the years of Iranian-backed attacks that followed.

For the United States and the broader West? The picture is far more complicated — and increasingly includes a great-power competition angle that goes well beyond the Middle East.

Divergent Interests: Existential Security vs. Global Stability — And the China Factor

America’s core interests in the Middle East have always been larger than any single bilateral relationship:

Secure energy flows for the global economy (including Europe and Asia).
Prevent a wider regional war that pulls in Russia, China, or disrupts the Indo-Pacific pivot.
Maintain credibility with Sunni Arab partners (Saudi Arabia, UAE, etc.) who quietly normalized or were moving toward normalization with Israel but now face Iranian missiles on their soil.
Avoid handing propaganda victories to adversaries who paint the West as endlessly entangled in “forever wars.”

The current campaign already strains every one of those. Oil prices are surging at a moment when Western economies are still navigating post-pandemic recovery and inflation worries. Gulf states are under direct fire, testing alliances built over decades. The death toll in Iran is climbing into the hundreds (some reports say over 700, including civilians), and images of destroyed government buildings and schools are flooding global media — perfect fodder for narratives of Western aggression.

But there's an additional layer to the U.S. involvement that highlights the misalignment even further: reports and analyses indicate that Washington joined and escalated the campaign in part to weaken China's access to discounted energy supplies. Iran has long been one of Beijing's key sources of cheap crude — with nearly all (around 90%) of Iran's exported oil going to China last year, accounting for roughly 13-15% of China's seaborne imports. This came at steep discounts via shadow fleets evading sanctions. Just two months earlier, the U.S. intervention in Venezuela — capturing President Nicolás Maduro and gaining influence over its oil sector — similarly disrupted another major discounted supplier to China (over half of Venezuela's exports went there).

Together, these moves have cut off or severely pressured up to 17% of China's oil imports from these two sanctioned sources, forcing Beijing into more competitive global markets and higher costs. Some analysts describe this as a deliberate strategic play to squeeze China's energy security ahead of potential flashpoints like Taiwan, where reliable cheap oil could be a wartime lifeline. While the administration publicly emphasizes nuclear and missile threats, the timing and pattern — hitting two of China's petro-partners in quick succession — suggest broader great-power maneuvering.

Europe, meanwhile, is largely on the sidelines. The UK reportedly blocked U.S. requests for certain basing support. The UN Security Council is calling for restraint. China and Russia are watching — and likely calculating how to exploit the chaos for influence in the Global South. This isn’t abstract. When Washington is perceived as fighting Israel’s war with American blood, treasure, and diplomatic capital — while also pursuing anti-China energy disruption — our ability to lead on Ukraine, Taiwan, or climate issues erodes.

Israel has every right to defend itself. But its strategic horizon is necessarily narrower: one regional threat above all others. America’s horizon must be planetary. When those two lenses are fused without daylight, the result is policy distortion — not prudent alliance.

The Cost of Subordination: Eroding Western Posture Worldwide

Let’s be blunt. For years, critics (and even some insiders) have warned that U.S. Middle East policy has been overly shaped by Israeli priorities — through lobbying, shared intelligence, and domestic politics. The current Iran operation risks proving the point at scale, especially as it intertwines with efforts to pressure China via energy denial.

Economic blowback: Higher oil prices act like a tax on every American and European household. They strengthen adversaries like Russia (a major exporter) and slow the green transition.
Diplomatic isolation: Much of the world already views the West as hypocritical on international law. Blank-check alignment with Israeli maximalism on Iran — now layered with visible anti-China energy warfare — feeds that perception, making it harder to rally coalitions against Beijing or Moscow.
Strategic distraction: While we pour resources into degrading Iranian capabilities deep in the Persian Gulf (and indirectly hitting China's supply lines), Beijing continues gray-zone pressure in the Taiwan Strait and South China Sea. The “scattered world war” the West faces demands prioritization — not letting one partner’s threat matrix (or even our own anti-China impulses) set the tempo for all.

History offers parallels. The 2003 Iraq War was sold partly on Israeli security grounds (removing a threat to Israel) but delivered massive costs to American prestige and trillions in treasure with little net gain for Western influence. We cannot afford a sequel in 2026.

Time for Strategic Clarity, Not Reflexive Alignment

Alliances are vital. Israel remains a critical partner — technologically advanced, democratically governed, and a counterweight to Iranian extremism. Intelligence sharing and qualitative military edge should continue.

But partnership is not puppeteering. American and Western leaders must ask the hard question in every crisis: Does this serve our interests first? Not “Does this match Jerusalem’s?” — and not even “Does this hurt Beijing enough?” When the answer diverges, we should say so — privately if possible, publicly if necessary.

The Iran campaign is still unfolding. Iranian retaliation continues. The endgame — regime collapse, prolonged insurgency, or a new nuclear sprint by survivors — remains uncertain. What is certain is this: the West’s global posture is too valuable, and our challenges too numerous, to subcontract our grand strategy to any single ally, no matter how close — or to let it become a proxy tool in great-power energy games.

True friendship sometimes requires saying “no” or at least “not exactly on your terms.” In the long run, that honesty strengthens alliances rather than weakening the senior partner. It’s time Washington — and Europe — remembered that. Our world influence depends on it.

Europe stands at a strategic crossroads, facing economic pressures, energy insecurity, and ongoing conflicts on its borders. Its leaders champion unity and citizen welfare, yet their policies often perpetuate division and dependency. This raises a critical question: Are today's European leaders useful idiots, unknowingly serving external agendas that undermine continental interests, or cynical crooks, deliberately prioritizing elite alliances over the public good?

To explore this, consider the enduring geopolitical frameworks: Halford Mackinder's Heartland theory, which emphasizes unifying the Eurasian landmass for global dominance, versus Alfred Thayer Mahan's sea power doctrine, focused on controlling maritime routes—a view historically advanced by Britain and the United States.

Continental Europe traditionally (both pre- and post-Cold War) gravitated toward Mackinder's vision of integrated land power. However, modern policies appear to align more closely with Mahan's approach, fostering division to the detriment of European citizens.

But if the Iron Curtain is no longer, why this shift, and what role have leaders played?

The Pre-2008 Vision: Pursuing Eurasian Integration

After the fall of the Berlin Wall, key European figures advocated for a strategic outlook that included Russia as a partner in a broader European framework. Leaders such as Nicolas Sarkozy, Angela Merkel, and Silvio Berlusconi viewed Russia's resources and military capabilities as assets for a stronger, unified Europe. This aligned with Mackinder's emphasis on controlling the Eurasian "Heartland" to secure the continent's future.

Sarkozy pushed for enhanced NATO-Russia ties, including joint initiatives.
Merkel advanced energy interdependence through projects like Nord Stream, aiming to tie Russia economically to Europe.
Berlusconi similarly pursued bilateral agreements, seeing NATO-Russia cooperation as mutually beneficial.

By 2010, Russian gas met about 40% of EU needs, supporting growth and stability for citizens. This era reflected a pragmatic approach: integrate eastward to leverage geography, resources, and shared interests, positioning Europe as a balanced power rather than a subordinate in maritime-dominated alliances.

The Bucharest Turning Point: Embracing Division in 2008

The pivotal shift occurred at the NATO Summit in Bucharest in April 2008, where allies declared that Ukraine and Georgia would become NATO members, albeit without an immediate Membership Action Plan (MAP).

This decision consciously excluded Russia, marking Europe's abandonment of its independent strategic interests in favor of Anglo-American priorities.

Pushed by the U.S., the summit promised eventual membership to these countries, provided they met requirements, while denying them MAP status due to opposition from figures like Merkel and Sarkozy.

The compromise—a vague pledge without a timeline—sowed division, as it isolated Russia and extended NATO eastward without integrating it. This move aligned Europe with Mahan's sea power doctrine, effectively ending its strategic autonomy.

Post-Bucharest, tensions escalated: Russia's 2008 conflict with Georgia and later events in Ukraine stemmed from this perceived encirclement. European leaders, by endorsing the declaration, shifted from Heartland unity to a fragmented rimland strategy.

The 2014 Ukraine crisis amplified this trajectory, with sanctions and energy decoupling further entrenching the divide. By 2022, initiatives like REPowerEU reduced Russian imports dramatically, leading to higher energy costs and industrial challenges for citizens.

Why the Alignment with Mahan's Doctrine?

Several factors explain Europe's adherence to this path, despite the costs to its people:

Transatlantic Pressures and NATO Reliance: Europe's security framework remains tied to the U.S., which funds much of NATO. The Bucharest decision reflected U.S. advocacy for expansion, overriding European hesitations. Leaders like Scholz, Merz and Macron continue this, framing Russia as a threat while committing billions in aid to Ukraine, at the expense of domestic economies. Now, with Trump’s threats to reduce U.S. involvement in NATO, Europeans are left strategically high and dry—entrenched in a policy of division but without guaranteed American support.
UK Influence and Post-Brexit Dynamics: Britain, as an "offshore balancer," historically benefits from a divided continent. Its strategic view—rooted in Mahan—encourages keeping Europe fragmented, with London maintaining sway through alliances like Five Eyes.
Internal Incentives and Elite Priorities: Leaders may prioritize short-term political gains or lobby influences over long-term citizen welfare. Defense spending increases favor U.S. suppliers, while green transitions shift dependencies westward.

This has resulted in vulnerabilities: reliance on imported LNG, economic stagnation, and a security posture that invites conflict rather than resolution.

Assessing Leadership: Idiots, Crooks, or Systemic Captives?

Europe's leaders are (perhaps) neither purely idiots nor crooks but are often captives of a system favoring external alignments. The 2008 Bucharest decision forsook a Mackinder-inspired unity for Mahan's division, subordinating European strategy to Anglo-American designs.

Pre-2010 visions of inclusion faded, replaced by policies harming citizens—rising costs, unemployment, and instability. Dissenters like Orbán offer alternatives, but systemic inertia prevails. A potential U.S. policy shift could prompt a reevaluation.

Ultimately, reclaiming strategic autonomy requires prioritizing Heartland integration over maritime dependency.

The Bucharest strategic betrayal lingers on....

"...The Alliance did not offer a Membership Action Plan to Georgia or Ukraine, largely due to the opposition of Germany and France, but pledged to review the decision in December 2008.^[4] Even though Georgia was not offered MAP, it welcomed the decision and said "The decision to accept that we are going forward to an adhesion to NATO was taken and we consider this is a historic success".^[59] However, the Summit Declaration stated: "NATO’s door will remain open to European democracies willing and able to assume the responsibilities and obligations of membership, in accordance with Article 10 of the Washington Treaty. We reiterate that decisions on enlargement are for NATO itself to make. [...] NATO welcomes Ukraine’s and Georgia’s Euro-Atlantic aspirations for membership in NATO. We agreed today that these countries will become members of NATO. Both nations have made valuable contributions to Alliance operations. We welcome the democratic reforms in Ukraine and Georgia and look forward to free and fair parliamentary elections in Georgia in May. MAP is the next step for Ukraine and Georgia on their direct way to membership. Today we make clear that we support these countries’ applications for MAP..."

The Neon Nexus: Miami Vice and the Pivot from Modern Power to Postmodern Culture

We often mistake the moment a culture peaks for the beginning of its eternal reign. We confuse the final, brilliant flare of a supernova with a new, permanent sun. Such was the case with the West in the 1980s, and there is no more perfect, more beautiful, and more tragic artifact of this climax than the television show Miami Vice.

Aired from 1984 to 1990, Miami Vice is not merely a cop show. It is a cultural palimpsest. On its glossy, neon-drenched surface, we see the first, vibrant sprouts of the postmodern world we now inhabit. But scratch that surface, and you find the beating, tragic heart of a dying Modernism. It is the pinnacle of Western power, and the blueprint for its dissolution.

The Modernist Ghost: Bogart in a Blazer

At its core, Miami Vice is a 1940s film noir transplanted to the sun-bleached tropics. Sonny Crockett is the direct heir of the Humphrey Bogart archetype: the lone knight navigating a corrupt world. He is Philip Marlowe with a Ferrari Testarossa and a pastel blazer.

This is the show's modernist backbone. It operates on stark, almost mythological, binaries of good and evil. Crockett and Tubbs are the forces of order, however flawed, against the chaotic, predatory drug cartels. The narratives, while serialized, are often straightforward tales of investigation, betrayal, and justice—or a gritty facsimile thereof. This moral certainty, this belief in a grand narrative where protagonists and antagonists are clearly defined, is a hallmark of the modernist project, which itself was the artistic and intellectual engine of the West's ascendant power from the late 19th to the mid-20th century.

Modernism, with its belief in progress, its "make it new" ethos, and its search for underlying truths, mirrored the West's confidence in its own structures: capitalism, the nation-state, and a linear path of history. Miami Vice’s characters are the last weary agents of this order.

The Postmodern Sheen: The Cultural Logic of Late Capitalism

Yet, this modernist hero is adrift in a world that has become utterly, dazzlingly postmodern. And here is where the show becomes prophetic. In 1984, the very year Miami Vice premiered, theorist Fredric Jameson published his seminal essay, "Postmodernism, or the Cultural Logic of Late Capitalism."

Jameson argued that postmodernism is not just a style but the dominant cultural expression of a new, globalized, and financialized phase of capitalism. Its characteristics include:

· The waning of affect: The replacement of deep, personal emotion with fragmented, intense, and superficial intensities.

· Pastiche: The playful, empty imitation of dead styles, stripped of their original substance.

· A depthless culture: A preoccupation with surfaces, images, and stylistic replication over deep meaning.

Miami Vice is this thesis made flesh. The show is famously "style over substance," but the style is the substance. The narrative is often secondary to the music video-like montages set to the hits of Phil Collins or Jan Hammer. The city of Miami is not a real place but a pastiche of Art Deco, neon, and tropical exoticism—a depthless image of itself.

Crockett's existential angst, his modernist depth, is constantly swallowed by the show's postmodern environment. His pain is just another aesthetic choice, another moody shot silhouetted against the setting sun. He is a man of action in a world that only values the image of action. This was the dawn of the "full-time screen generation," the moment when life began to be mediated not by novels or grand ideals, but by the flickering, seductive logic of MTV and the music video.

1989: The Supernova and the Implosion

Miami Vice’s run, 1984 to 1990, perfectly bookends this pivotal decade. In the mid-80s, under the reassertion of American power by Ronald Reagan, the West—and the USA in particular—seemed to be at an absolute zenith. The economy was booming, the Cold War was being aggressively won. The modernist narrative of Western triumph was reaching its climax.

And then, in 1989, the Berlin Wall fell. Miami Vice was in its penultimate season. The West erupted in a clamour of victory, proclaiming the "end of history," as Francis Fukuyama would soon famously (and prematurely) declare. This was the ultimate modernist fantasy: a final, decisive victory for liberal democracy.

But Jameson's theory, and the world of Miami Vice, suggests a different reading. The triumph of the West did not cement its power; it triggered its cultural dissolution. With the grand, unifying narrative of the Cold War over, the center could not hold. The monolithic certainty of Modernism shattered into the fragmented, relativist, and hyper-real playground of Postmodernism.

The West, having won the world, lost its plot. The gritty, moral certainty of a Sonny Crockett had no place in the coming world of globalized finance, where capital flows were more real than borders, and image was more valuable than truth. The very tools the West used to win—global capitalism, media saturation, the prioritization of market logic—created the postmodern condition that would erode its cultural foundations.

The Endless Echo: Vice City and the 80s Ghost

The enduring power of this moment is confirmed by our culture’s obsessive return to it. The most significant cultural artifact to understand the 21st century’s relationship with the 80s is not a film or a show, but a video game: Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. Rockstar Games did not merely set a game in Miami; they set it in Miami Vice’s Miami, a perfect pastiche of a pastiche. It is a world built not from history, but from televised memory, proof that the Miami Vice aesthetic had become a self-referential mythos, a symbol of a specific kind of glamorous, amoral power.

The imminent release of Grand Theft Auto VI, returning once more to the neon swamps of "Vice City," underscores this point. In our fragmented, algorithm-driven present, the stark, stylish, and seemingly simple world of 80s Miami remains a potent cultural shorthand for a time when the lines—between cop and criminal, good and evil, power and decadence—felt, however deceptively, more clearly drawn.

This nostalgia points to a deeper haunting. The ultimate relic of this lost modernist apex is Donald Trump. A figure forged in the 1980s glory—all gilded penthouse lobbies, aggressive deal-making, and televised bravado—Trump is a specter desperately trying to project the ultimate power of a bygone era. His political project is not a forward-looking vision but a pastiche of 80s power politics, a promise to make America "great" again by resurrecting the very modernist certainty—in borders, in industry, in unchallenged national sovereignty—that was irrevocably dismantled by the postmodern, globalized world the 80s unleashed. He is a Sonny Crockett who, instead of navigating the new world, denies its existence, howling at the postmodern tide he himself, as a creature of media and spectacle, helped to bring in.

The Last Stand on a Neon Coast

Miami Vice is the sarcophagus of the modernist West. It is where the archetypal hero was buried alive in the spectacular, depthless, and seductive world he helped create. We watch Crockett and Tubbs not as men fighting for a future they will build, but as tragic figures performing a ritual of order in a world that has already moved on to a new, more chaotic logic.

It was the pinnacle, and it was the end. The supernova was so bright we mistook its light for a new dawn. We are still living in the long, neon-drenched twilight it left behind, playing out its themes in our games and our politics, forever haunted by the ghost of power that felt real.

"This is not the right way to deal with China," a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson stated, urging the U.S. to "correct its wrong approach."

In July 1941, the United States froze Japanese assets and imposed a crippling oil embargo . Japan, which imported nearly all of its oil, faced a stark choice: abandon its imperial ambitions or secure new resources by force. The decision to attack Pearl Harbor set the course for World War II in the Pacific.

Today, a new resource confrontation is brewing. China, which dominates the global supply of rare earth elements, has begun to leverage this control through export restrictions . These elements are as vital to modern technology as oil was to 20th-century warfare. This article explores the historical analogy and examines whether we are witnessing the opening salvo of a new kind of conflict.

The 1941 Precedent: How Oil Embargoes Led to War

To understand the power of resource sanctions, one must examine the events that led to Pearl Harbor.

Japan's Resource Dilemma: In the 1930s, Japan was a rapidly modernizing nation with limited natural resources. It sought to build an empire, but its campaign in China consumed vast amounts of oil, scrap metal, and other commodities. By 1939, roughly 80% of Japan's oil was imported from the United States.
The Escalating U.S. Response: Alarmed by Japanese aggression, including the invasion of French Indochina, the U.S. responded with a series of escalating economic measures. It terminated its commercial treaty with Japan, imposed embargoes on scrap metal, and finally, in July 1941, froze all Japanese assets and implemented a full oil embargo .
Japan's Calculated Gamble: The embargo deprived Japan of 94% of its oil supply. Japanese military planners estimated their navy had less than two years of bunker oil remaining. Faced with economic strangulation, Japan decided to seize the oil-rich Dutch East Indies. Knowing this would provoke the U.S., they launched a preemptive strike on the Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbor, hoping to buy time to consolidate their gains and force a negotiated peace. The gamble failed, triggering a total war Japan could not win.

The 21st-Century Battleground: Rare Earth Elements

Today's essential resources are not fuel, but the materials that power our digital and green economies. Rare earth elements are a group of 17 metals critical for manufacturing high-strength magnets, batteries, consumer electronics, and advanced defense systems.

China's Market Dominance: While the elements are geographically widespread, China has become the world's predominant supplier through lower labor costs and less strict environmental regulations. It mines over 60% of rare earths and handles an even larger share—roughly 85%—of the complex refining process. This dominance gives it unparalleled influence over the global technology supply chain.
A History of Leverage: China has not been shy about using this position. From 2010, it began restricting rare earth exports, citing environmental conservation. These policies caused major global supply disruptions and price spikes. In a notable 2010 incident, China was accused of unofficially cutting off supplies to Japan during a diplomatic standoff, demonstrating the strategic use of its resource control.
The Current Dispute: The U.S., E.U., and Japan challenged China's restrictions at the World Trade Organization (WTO), which ruled against China in 2014. China complied and dropped its formal quotas in 2015. However, new controls and threats have emerged. U.S. officials now call these measures a "global supply-chain power grab," while China maintains they are "legitimate and compliant" measures for environmental protection and national security.

Historical Parallels and Critical Divergences
