Happy New Year, friend. It’s been a minute! As you might remember from my last newsletter, I put my writing on hold for the past three years due to a family emergency. It’s been a long road, but I’m happy to report all is well, and we’re working hard to put that chapter of our lives behind us.

After a rough few years, I have high hopes for my new year. Hope for you, too, that 2026 is your best year ever.

I imagine James, a wise, no-nonsense cowboy from my novel, Essie’s Roses, might say, living life is more than balancing on a string of hope. It’s digging in your spurs and believing that good changes and open doors are coming your way.

I don’t live my life on hope alone, but belief that God has a plan for my life. Though sometimes that plan doesn’t present itself perfectly or clearly, I still believe. And sometimes it’s the windiest road I’ve ever walked! But I’m never too old to learn, change course, or believe instinctively that some things are just not finished yet. It’s not the time to give up on certain goals or endeavors, but to dig in.

Essie’s Roses Book 3: FREEDOM SONG

Belief in something bigger than ourselves is also one of the themes in my next novel, Freedom Song (Essie’s Roses 3). In Essie’s Roses book three, the women at Westland must learn true freedom isn’t solely a personal journey but an opportunity to open one’s heart to trust in family and new friends for guidance and support during the hardest times. Family comes in all forms. Essie and Evie will once again learn freedom isn’t simply a feeling; it’s a position. And their patriarch, Delly, will ensure her girls learn important lessons on freedom, family and forgiveness.

I hope and believe with all my heart, your 2026 is filled with many blessings and an abundance of joy, peace, provision, health and dreams coming true.

Another hope of mine for 2026 is that Essie’s Roses book three will be worth the wait, with an Essie’s Roses book four close behind. I have several other stories I’ve worked on over the years and new characters to introduce into your heart.

BOOK NEWS! - A Fresh Start

New Beginnings

There is something about breathing in the sweet scent of spring flowers that reminds me of my childhood. Flowers soothe and calm me. Losing myself in a secret garden bursting with blossoms ignites my imagination. Whether it’s walking in a garden, by a lake, or inside a shady forest cove, the intriguing solitude of nature continues to inspire my writing.

You have waited a long time for an update. Thank you for staying with me and visiting me on Facebook and sharing my book news. It fills my heart with joy when I hear from my readers. I’m grateful many of my Essie’s Roses fans have reached out to tell me how excited they are for the next installment. I write stories because of you! Your support is as sweet as spring flowers.

Sometimes we walk through adversities in life we will never understand–a theme often appearing in my novels. For the past few years, I have had to walk through a difficult journey focused on a special person in my life: my husband.

My husband is the bravest, strongest man I know. I’m so thankful for him and our thirty years of marriage. Many can relate to being a caregiver and an advocate for a loved one. Nothing else matters in times like this. We are walking through what we must, getting back to our lives, and have all faith this will be behind us soon.

The good news: I have returned to my writing, losing myself once again in working on my next book: FREEDOM SONG (Essie’s Roses Book 3). I have enjoyed walking in the lemon wildflower fields and among treasured oaks and roses at Evie and Essie Mae’s Westland. In their next adventure, Evie learns about Westland’s origin story through her grandmother, Ruth Wilcox (Miss Katie’s mother). A reluctant James, Delly, and the mysterious Dr. Willow Jones help (or can they?) Evie and Essie navigate a mystery from Essie’s past and uncover a buried secret or two. But with the chaos and promise of the Reconstruction Era after the Civil War, the women at Westland will have to push the past behind them and band together to save one of their own.

I can’t wait to share more. Stay tuned!

Happy Fall!

Happy fall, friend! Yes, it’s been too long. As I mentioned in my last newsletter, I took time away to assess what’s next for my writing career and my Essie’s Roses book series. For the last ten years, I’ve thrown myself into my books, writing, research, marketing, the list goes on. Many decisions to make, but I’m happily writing Essie’s Roses Book 3!

The way it goes for me, strangely enough, I often get a title and the ending to my stories first. Five years ago, I had the title of my new novel. You’re the first to know it’s: FREEDOM SONG (Essie’s Roses Book 3).

The term freedom song holds special significance for Essie Mae, Evie and Delly, and I can’t wait to share more. But you will also just have to read Freedom Song to discover its deeper meaning. I hope to share a sneak peek at my new novel soon. Stay tuned!

I’m working hard to craft another (I hope) imaginative, heartfelt story, picking up where Westland (Essie’s Roses Book 2) ended. This time, instead of fighting each other and a shadow from their past, Westland’s “odd family”, as they are called, must put aside old wounds and haunting memories to work together to save one of their own. Loads of interesting research into the post-Civil War South during the Reconstruction Era. Hint . . . after the war for a brief time, Alabama had no government, no law, and an abundance of lawlessness.

What’s this about gold buried at Westland? Fact or dangerous fiction? And Paris . . . hmm, Miss Lil insists on taking Essie and Evie (and Delly!) back to Paris. But is it the right time to leave James alone at Westland?

Are you intrigued? I hope so!

I will keep you posted on my progress. I have also promised myself to jump right into writing the next book Essie’s Roses Book 4 which will explore many new budding relationships at Westland . . . or wherever Essie Mae and Evie’s Freedom Song journey takes them.

Thank you for your continued support and encouragement as I navigate what’s next for my writing career. I just can’t stop thanking you because I know without you, there wouldn’t have been an Essie’s Roses sequel. Essie’s Roses book three? I’m excitedly writing and planning more stories, including those beyond Westland’s front porch. But I love hanging out with wise Delly sipping strawberry lemonade.

Fall’s Peace

Wishing you a fall season filled with a harvest full of fun, beauty, and peace. I have never been great at allowing myself time to rest. It’s time.

Nature, whether a secret garden, a forest cove, or the splendor of the colors of fall, fills my stories with the hope of new beginnings, dreaming again, and letting go. I know too well the challenges of letting go of stress during trying storms. But storms will pass. They can’t last forever.

If you’re walking through a difficult time, be encouraged and comforted in knowing that light is always around the corner. Sunny times are ahead. As Evie and Essie might say, we declare it to be so.

Summer Reading

I’m thrilled that after seven years on the market, readers continue to find and embrace the heartfelt story of Essie’s Roses. Thanks to you! Every review, post share, and mention enables me to write the next book.

So many enticing historical fiction reads out this year. Do you have a favorite? As I’m busy researching, writing, and re-reading my Essie’s Roses series to keep up with what the women at Westland might have in store next, I’m doing my best to tackle my summer reading list. I enjoyed The Magnolia Palace by Fiona Davis and Julia Kelly’s The Last Dance of the Debutante. I also look forward to reading Dreaming of Flight by Catherine Ryan Hyde.

I still can’t believe Westland was released in January, and I’m grateful it continues to warm hearts and find its summer readers.

Sharing My Love of Film & Acting

With my background in theater, film and acting, I thought it would be fun to share some of my favorite off-the-beaten-path movie picks on my Facebook page. Of course, I love finding new authors and sharing what I’m reading. But my passion for the craft of acting and creating layered, believable characters never wanes. And during the pandemic, I found myself lost in old movies. Perhaps a wish for simpler times.

I love dissecting and discovering movies that mainly encompass goodness, fine acting, and heartfelt stories. At the end of the year, I’ll compile a list of my favorite finds, perhaps to add to your movie list, ready for those 2023 winter movie days. Yes, I said winter and 2023!

As we celebrate the Fourth of July, I’m reminded of the precious gift of living in the freest country in the world. We’ve been through trying times, and difficulties and challenges keep mounting. Yet, I remain thankful. Nothing or no one is perfect. I believe that is why I’m drawn to writing about human frailty and imperfections. I also enjoy exploring the journey of those striving to overcome those imperfections.

As you celebrate with your family and friends, remember the gift of freedom in your life. And strive to offer it to others in kindness, words and deed.

Healing Historical Fiction

I was thrilled when the Historical Novels Review called Water Lily Dance, “healing historical fiction.” Water Lily Dance is a special novel for me. Not only is it a tribute to my late mom, who cast her dreams aside of becoming an artist to raise her children, it is a testament to the artistic freedom forged by a rebellious band of 19th-century artists known as the Impressionists. It is also a love letter between mothers and daughters.

I love writing and exploring the layers of mother-daughter relationships. In Essie’s Roses, we see the unrelenting love Miss Katie holds for Evie and Essie Mae, and Katie’s struggle to let “her girls” go. In Westland, Essie Mae, born of a slave, grapples with the unknowns regarding her family history, yet finds love, purpose, and acceptance in her “unlikely family” at Westland. And my favorite sage, Delly, plays a motherly role, doling out spiritual wisdom, life lessons, and tough love to all.

In Water Lily Dance, Sophie contends with unresolved pain, her mother’s secrets, and apologies she will never receive. Camille seeks answers regarding her distant mother and their strained relationship. In my years of historical research, I have found, no matter the century or societal norms of the time, the same wants, needs, and shortcomings layer our relationships. We all want acceptance and purpose. We all need love. We all fall short and spend years trying to make up for those shortcomings. And we all contend with forgiveness, forgiving others and ourselves.

A Mother’s Love

Water Lily Dance is different from my Essie’s Roses series by design. I stretched my imagination, observation, and voice when writing this dual-timeline novel. My mom never got the chance to read it, but I know she would have been tickled. And just like Sophie and her mom, we were going to paint together. But I don’t regret we never did, because my mom inspired me to paint with my imagination.

There are several scenes in Water Lily Dance inspired by my life and relationship with my mom, one moment in particular. The year before I lost my mom, I bought her a gift basket of artist’s paints and supplies and an extra set for me. Mom was going to teach me to paint.

A few months after she passed, I went to my basement, saw Mom’s gift basket of art supplies, she never got the chance to use, and tore it open, staring at the blank cement foundation wall before me. Tears streaming my cheeks, I squeezed those expensive paints onto a palette and started smearing my wall in an Impressionistic mess, inspired to do my worst, painting Claude Monet’s Water Lilies.

But it wasn’t about painting perfectly. I had never painted like this ever! Though Mom was gone, she was still teaching me a lesson: God does indeed give beauty for ashes. And grief, in time, sometimes much time, will turn into joy if we allow it. I’m thankful for the many beautiful lessons my mom taught me.

With my new novel Westland out this year, another story that explores the beautiful and complex relationships between mothers and daughters, this Mother’s Day, I’m thinking of my mom more than ever with a huge smile and a grateful heart.

In Water Lily Dance, Sophie reads the card she planned on giving to her mom with that gift basket of art supplies, a card I wrote for my mom that read:

A mother’s love comes close to touching God, as I will ever know here on earth. Thank you for being my angel. Thank you for holding and taking care of my heart. We did our best, Mom, and it was more than enough. Thank you for being my hero.

In some ways, Water Lily Dance was my love letter to my mom. I hope the love in this story inspires you and heals your heart. If you’re missing your mom this Mother’s Day, remember the good and cherish those special memories.

Happy fall! I’m so excited for jacket weather and fall colors. Friends, it’s been a challenging year for us. I am beyond grateful you continue to offer such treasured support, encouragement, and kindness as I work to finish my next book, Westland, the sequel to Essie’s Roses. It’s been an emotional journey returning to Westland and diving into the lives and secrets of Evie, Essie, Delly, and Miss Katie.

My heart and thoughts are with you during this difficult time. Challenges all around us, but hope, too, as I pray we come together, as a nation, in love, respect, and peace. A dear friend, in her recent, thoughtful review of Essie’s Roses, reminded me of a prayer Evie and Essie recite in the story:

Women in the Garden by Claude Monet, 1866.

“Women in the Garden” Claude Monet, 1866. Camille Doncieux posed for three figures. In my dual timeline novel Water Lily Dance, I explore the mysterious Camille and her intriguing relationships to Claude Monet and the Impressionists. Monet’s fellow artists predicted “Women in the Garden” as Monet’s triumph and victory for the painters of the “New Art” at the Paris Salon exhibition. But the government’s jury rejected and censored it because Monet painted visible brushstrokes, vibrant colors, and figures staged in nature–clothed in modern fashions!

Monet’s progress threatened their control on dictating an artist’s career and limiting free artistic expression as Monet offered the public a different art far from their mandate to paint classical depictions of war, religious themes and nudes. Funny tidbit: Claude Monet never once painted a nude in his career. Unheard of during the day. When asked, later in life, why he never painted a nude Monet’s only answer: “I wouldn’t dare.”

Essie’s Roses highlights a brave, African American woman, Essie Mae, enduring a dark period in our history. The journey of writing Essie’s Roses, visiting its historical sites, and studying its history, taught me lessons that will stay with me forever. I share one example on my website’s FAQ page, the moment I held an actual slave receipt at a history center, feeling the weight, evil, and horror of what that fragile paper represented. As a writer of historical fiction, the importance of learning from history inspires my writing. I believe stories, music, films, and art pave the way to important conversations that may bring healing, understanding, and unity. I’m passionate about writing stories that highlight injustice, especially the fight for equality, women’s rights, and for all, the dream and desire to attain freedom in its many forms.

Happy Spring!

Like you, friends, I’ve been staying home and a bit sad, missing the beauty of spring. But we can be thankful for our imaginations and love of escaping into the fascinating and absorbing worlds of novels. The bright side: it’s a good time to read more. Keep Calm

It was a cold winter, and I’ve been counting the days for spring and quiet walks and writing in my favorite sanctuary: the Missouri Botanical Garden. We are all experiencing great difficulty and hardship right now. My heart is with you.

I’m hunkered down at home, and my heart’s a bit heavy because I don’t want us to change as a nation. I miss seeing and smiling at people. I hate seeing masks. It’s weird and scary like all those apocalyptic movies from every era (I have no idea why they’re running these on TV right now). I miss striking up pleasant conversations with people at the store, a park, and my favorite restaurant. I miss HUGS, encouraging pats on the backs, and handshakes! I don’t want us to walk around in fear at summer concerts, outdoor theaters, and baseball games. Closed parks and churches are not us. Closing up restaurants and banning weekend day-trips antiquing and supporting small towns, candy shops, bakeries, independent bookstores, and art galleries and so many other small businesses we need and love to support.

We are a people who thrive on companionship, giving, friendship, and opening our hearts, to those in need. And like many other families, my husband and I have spent over 25 years starting and keeping our small businesses running through the worst times. This. Is. Hard. BUT we will win.

We will return to what we love. We won’t give up our freedom. We will not change for the worst. We will do what’s right in the moment to keep ourselves and others safe, but no matter how many people talk on TV, no matter the politics, this isn’t a change for the better, and it never will be, in my opinion. But in all this, as I pray and grieve with those hurting and who have lost precious loved ones from this virus, I refuse to live in despair and fear. I applaud our heroes, the first responders and healthcare professionals running toward danger to keep us safe and well, not away. Thank you.

It’s a tough time, friends. One that will test our patience, faith, resolve, trust, and hope in the goodness of others to do what’s right. We’ve weathered many storms together in our country, and we will march through this one. Believe the best, friends. Strive to love. Believe in the goodness you know exists around you, in your community, home, and business. And pray for our leaders and each other.

Be encouraged. Do your part to keep the peace, health, and safety in your home and community. This will pass. It will not last forever. I’m with you, friends. We can do this. <3

So thrilled to announce, I’m writing my forthcoming sequel to Essie’s Roses: WESTLAND.

The women at Westland will return to face the aftermath of the Civil War and how the war and reconstruction efforts have affected their relationships and home on that small plantation in Alabama with several twists and surprises. It’s emotional and exciting returning to Westland. I’m turning the corner on an awful month of sadness and drama. It’s tough going through loss and unexpected situations that steal our joy, peace, health, and finances, especially when “the hits just keep on coming!” When I find myself stuck in the muck of negativity and sadness, I purpose to fix my eyes on the good—on thanksgiving—no matter who or what is screaming not to.

I don’t believe “trouble comes in bunches of three” and all that jazz. In fact, it’s a little joke in my novel Water Lily Dance. Sometimes, we can’t help getting stuck in the dramas and tragedies of life, but we can’t stay there.

Determine to protect and hold onto your faith and hope. Purpose to see the good in the worst times, and bit by bit your heart awakens, brightens, comes back together, and you begin to see and believe: this too shall pass. I’ve been through difficult challenges and seasons in my life. The hard times, yes, they’re difficult, life-altering, and sad, BUT, they are only temporary. Good things will come your way, but only you can change your focus and watch for and expect them.

Believe in the best, friends. Keep your eyes on the sunshine. And above all, stay thankful. Thankful for life, loved ones, and yes, a cozy read in a secret garden . . . any garden! <3

Q: How did the idea for Water Lily Dance originate?

A: Sophie’s Journey: After the death of my mom, a casualty to a national drug shortage for a chemotherapy drug to extend her life she could not get, I had to follow my heart and write this novel as a dedication to her. I decided to share my experience with loss, the secret side of grief between daughters as caretakers and mothers with end-of-life secrets and wishes. My mom was a 1960s wife who dreamed of becoming an artist, but she set that dream aside to raise her children. Though she never realized her dream, art resided in her soul, art, and creativity she gifted to her children. And so, for a few pages, my mom was a famous artist: Josephine de Lue. Sophie’s journey is one from my heart to my readers and offers a massive dose of hope.

Claude Monet: The tranquility of Claude Monet’s paintings always captivated me. I was astounded when I learned of Monet’s secret struggles, selfish, careless nature, censorship of his art, his unyielding dedication to paint and see like no other, the aim behind his rebellion, and the darkness, including deep self-doubt, this painter of lights endured while he produced serene masterpieces.

Water Lily Dance provides a unique insight into the little-known early life of Claude Monet and his mysterious first wife, Camille Doncieux who Sophie believes she is related to. Water Lily Dance is no ordinary love story between an artist and his model, but a revolution, a woman’s rebellion to find independence, herself, in the midst of her ordered life and the upheaval during the birth of Women’s Rights in France and the Impressionist art movement in 19th-century Paris.

Q: What compelled you to write about Claude Monet? Did the book involve special research?

A: YES! How do you whittle fourteen years of the most famous artist in the world and his mysterious first wife, eighteen moves spanning three countries in twelve years, and the support of their friends, stars of Paris, the Impressionists, into a few scenes for a novel? When I set out to write Water Lily Dance, I had no idea the monumental task of research required regarding the birth of Impressionism, its many artists, their “new” Paris, and the lives of a trailblazing couple surrounded by famous friends and patrons.

Each thread unraveled a mystery and heartache surrounding Monet’s early life. In the end, I realized Water Lily Dance held many rebellions: Claude Monet, Camille Doncieux, Sophie Noel, Josephine de Lue—every character has a story, a fight. And there was Camille, a mysterious and misunderstood figure in art history. We know little of her background because Claude Monet destroyed all letters, photographs, and diaries relating to her existence, with one exception: the eighty portraits he and his fellow Impressionists painted of Camille, many Monet kept and repurchased from previous buyers in his private possession until his death despite his remarrying. This fact alone began my quest to dig deeper in archives, hundreds of letters and 19th-century French records and publications to find more about Camille Doncieux and her family and I did.

Q: What intrigued you most researching Claude Monet, Camille Doncieux, and the Impressionist art movement?

A: I fell down several rabbit holes! Studying Claude Monet’s early life, character, and treatment of Camille—I didn’t like him very much. Yet, Camille’s life with Claude Monet was her choice. She was neither victim nor observer, which fascinated me and made for an interesting story. Though the historical account regarding Camille Doncieux is fictional, I was thrilled when I discovered new information regarding her family’s connection to wealth and art, never before discussed. This thread enabled me to paint the layered life of this intriguing woman, an important figure in the Impressionist art movement I believe in more ways than we will ever know.

The details of complex historical events, places, and people I use to write my stories can get overwhelming to write and read, so I seek out those tidbits in history that surprise, move and intrigue me. In my debut novel, Essie’s Roses, one fact drove that story: it was illegal for a slave to learn to read and write. In Water Lily Dance, Claude Monet meant more to art than his drive to paint what he saw not what or how they told him. He defied the “rules” and mandates of the day as an artist and salesman—with little training. Claude Monet wanted freedom. He didn’t wait for it; he created it for himself no matter the consequences. The art establishment hated him for this and purposed to censor him, and the Impressionists, because he broke from tradition.

Another intriguing aspect to my story includes the recent historical finds regarding Claude Monet’s wealthy background and network of celebrity support. I chose to write Monet, not as a poverty-stricken artist, but one well bred and connected within Parisian high-society with several famous, wealthy friends who supported his career. Because Monet spoke little about his upbringing and often exaggerated facts, the only way to truly know young Claude Monet was to study his famous friends and letters as Auguste Renoir, Émile Zola, Alexandre Dumas, Gustave Courbet, even a wealthy French code breaker in the military, and other celebrities of the day. My creation of Camille is fictional but is based on historical references, including a family secret threatening her very ruse of respectability. How could I resist?

Q: How long did it take you to write Water Lily Dance?

A: Four years. I wrote the premise to this story years before I started writing it. I wrote a few books in between, suffered some life interruptions and the tragic losses that gave this book wings. I hesitated to share my personal story in Sophie and found it challenging finding the truth about the most famous artist in history: Claude Monet. Experiencing two art museum exhibitions of Claude Monet’s works in St. Louis and New York inspired me further, but it wasn’t until I started my research that I realized the scope of this book and young Claude Monet’s life. Writing multiple timelines gave me fits! I realized not everyone will geek out on art history of the Impressionists as I did, so I strove to write relatable stories. I chose not to focus on Monet but his first wife and model Camille. Monet exaggerated and omitted details about his early life. I had no idea I would end up researching fifteen of his famous friends and the celebrities of Paris of the day.

Q: Can you recommend any great books for readers to expand their knowledge of Impressionist art?

A: So many! A few of my favorites: Claude Monet The Water Lilies by Georges Clemenceau; Monet by Himself edited by Richard Kendall is a fascinating look at Monet’s paintings, drawings, pastels, and letters. Origins of Impressionism, Gary Tinterow, Henri Loyrette (The Museum of Metropolitan Art); Frédéric Bazille and the Birth of Impressionism, Michel Hilair and Paul Perrin; Monet and His Muse, Mary Mathews Gedo.

Q: What are you working on next?

A: My lovely readers have been asking for a sequel to Essie’s Roses. I’m happy to announce, I’m writing it now: WESTLAND! I love the characters in Water Lily Dance. I’m exploring continuing Camille’s story and taking Sophie’s story in a different direction, perhaps in another book. Stay tuned! Why did I choose to connect a young Claude Monet, the rebirth of Paris, the New Art, and three brave women? Writing this novel, I realized every character had a fight. Sometimes we rise, other times we fall, but we don’t quit. And when we’re tempted to, Water Lily Dance is, I hope, a reminder we are never alone.

When a young Claude Monet set out to paint, his goal wasn’t to change the world; he simply desired to paint what he saw in his own technique and not what he was told. That is powerful when you understand the mandates and expectations of Paris 1865 placed on artists. An artist faced government censorship and slammed doors at earning a living when they deviated from tradition and mandates. Yet, a group of painters (the Impressionists) dared to pave the way for free expression. That is what attracted me to Claude Monet’s beginning, his famous friends, and the young woman in the middle of it all: Camille.

We all paint in our own way. And loss can encompass many things. The women in this story have taught me so much. Isn’t it funny, fictional characters teaching us lessons? I love it. It’s why I write. “We do not move on from grief; we move through it.” These words from Annabel, a favorite character of mine in this story, spoke healing to my own loss. That’s the magic of writing when whispers appear on the page that soothe my soul.
