<p>CINCINNATI, OH (November 22, 2011) - Michelman now offers two new grades of its Michem® Guard family of waterborne dispersions formulated to control slip, mar, and rub resistance in water-based OPVs, inks and industrial coatings. The purchase includes the <span>Licomer</span> line of <a href="http://www.michelman.com/Industry-Expertise/Floor-Care/">floor polish additives</a>, associated intellectual property, equipment and assets. <span>Michelman</span> will integrate all related customer support and technical service into its offices and labs in Luxembourg and Belgium. The company has named Mr. Vladimir <span>Nuñez</span> as Business Manager - <span>Licomer</span>. <span>Clariant</span> will continue to sell and service the <span>Licomer</span> line in Central and South America and the Caribbean under a trademark license from <span>Michelman</span>.</p> <p><span>Nuñez</span>, who was previously <span>Michelman's</span> Sales Manager in Europe, will be responsible for ensuring a seamless transition for existing <span>Licomer</span> customers in the short term, as well as on-going business concerns over time. CINCINNATI, OH (August 25, 2009) – Michelman recently introduced its new DigiGuard® UV curable OPV that cures and dries the moment it’s exposed to ultraviolet light to form tough protective surfaces on paper and film printed on HP Indigo presses. The OPVs are approved by HP for use on their new UV Coater, are available in a variety of finishes, and have excellent adhesion to the HP Indigo Electroinks.

The UV Series offers several advantages over other varnish types. In addition to quick turn-around time because of its instantaneous curing, it is energy efficient, offers good protection against mechanical rubbing, can be used to produce extremely high gloss levels, and is solvent free. They are available in matte, satin and gloss finishes and can be used on a variety of papers and films. CINCINNATI, OH (October 24, 2008) – Michelman’s Nomar™ Series of abrasion resistant coatings meet market requirements for non-scuff performance for corrugated shipping containers.

When shipping items, as small as a box of cereal or as large as a dishwasher, the Nomar Series coatings eliminate the abrasion that commonly occurs inside the shipping containers during transit; allowing for scratch-free goods that are ready for sale upon arrival.

The need for abrasion resistance has increased dramatically as recycled fibers replace virgin-kraft fibers. Furthermore, painted products, which are often packed before fully cured, require closer attention to non-scuff coating choice and application.

Nomar Series coatings are environmentally friendly due to their water-based composition. While not recommended for skid resistance and water resistance protection, the Nomar Series coatings are FDA approved, can withstand the heat of corrugation, will not transfer on to the packaged items and are gluable with most water-based and hot-melt adhesives.

CINCINNATI, OH (September 24, 2008) – The VaporCoat® Series of coatings from Michelman are recyclable, water-based moisture barrier coatings designed for a wide range of substrates including specialty lightweight papers, folding carton, boxboard grades and linerboard used in corrugated packaging.

The coatings can be used for moisture retention when used on the interior surface, or to prevent moisture penetration into the container when used on the exterior. Various grades of VaporCoat provide meat release, are printable, repulpable, recyclable, cold-set gluable and FDA compliant. CINCINNATI, OH (June 15, 2008) – Michelman today announced the acquisition of Raleigh, North Carolina based Hydrosize® Technologies, Inc.  Hydrosize is a manufacturer of state-of-the-art coatings including sizings, film formers, fixatives, binders as well as resins for the coating and composite industries. 

Key to the acquisition, Hydrosize gives Michelman a waterborne polyurethane sizing technology designed specifically for the fibers and composites market.  The polyurethane dispersion technology will complement Michelman’s existing line of polyolefin-based solutions, and will be developed for applications in other markets including coatings and packaging.

Hydrosize carries its own polyolefin line, which will strengthen and supplement Michelman’s existing offering.  The company also boasts the world’s only solvent free, high temperature sizing for use in advanced composites.

Hydrosize was co-owned by husband and wife, Andy and Heather Brink.  Dr. Andy Brink has joined the staff of Michelman to ensure a successful transition, and has been named Business Development Manager, Fibers & Composites.  He will work with the combined customer groups, and bring his wealth of marketing and technical expertise to Michelman’s growing fibers & composites business.

The coating, called Extreva® CS3, was developed collaboratively by Michelman and Utopia, and is a modification of Michelman’s DigiPrime®, a proven technology used by film producers and converters around the globe. To take advantage of the new coating, Indigo users need to order through GPA, a supplier of paper and film substrates based in Chicago, IL, and specify substrates with the Extreva CS3 coating. GPA is the exclusive distributor for the technology, which is currently available only in North America.

Extreva CS3 is pre-applied to the substrate, eliminating the need for press owners to handle chemicals. It features a full suite of beneficial properties never before available to HP Indigo press operators, and is available on PVC and synthetic sheets. The coating produces consistent color development from sheet-to-sheet and lot-to-lot, excellent ink and coating adhesion, and most importantly, superior functional performance.

Functional performance is demonstrated by absolute flatness of the substrate before and after printing; no shrinkage, warping or registration issues; a surface that slips uniformly and consistently with no sticking to press components or other sheets, resulting in less downtime and fewer torn blankets; a reduction in static build up; faster drying; and the ability to repel fingerprints and other contaminants.

Extreva CS3, like DigiPrime, is non-yellowing and has outstanding shelf life, and because it’s water-based, can extend blanket life when compared to solvent-based primers. Using substrates coated with Extreva CS3 can also increase the printer’s efficiency and profitability by minimizing downtime, waste and maintenance costs.

In conjunction with HP, Michelman has developed DigiPrime® 5000, a water-based primer that can be used by owners and operators of HP Indigo sheet-fed s2000 and s3050 presses. The new primer is optimized for screen printing on synthetic substrates and replaces Topaz 17.

As compared to Topaz 17, water-based DigiPrime® 5000 is more environmentally and workplace friendly, enhancing workplace safety and comfort. It has a longer product and shelf life, produces outstanding Indigo ink transfer and adhesion to the substrate while improving rub resistance, and produces better screen printing finishes on dense mesh applications.

For many HP Indigo sheet-fed press users, screen printing is the only feasible method for optimizing substrates. Many of these customers print on soft vinyl, one of the toughest substrates to optimize due to the high level of plasticizers. Previously, solvent-based Topaz 17 was their only available primer option. MVTR tests moisture resistance over a 24-hour period under controlled conditions. There are five defined sets of temperature and humidity conditions, ranging from moderate to severe. Michelman normally tests at the most severe level, using the ASTM E96 test procedure (100% F, 90% RH).

 

Maximum moisture vapor resistance requires the right coating and the best application. To replace curtain coating or poly laminate, the MVTR coating should be applied with a rod coater, preferably in an off-line operation and with a basecoat/topcoat combination.
