Macomb Community College student to be voice of financial fitness in metro Detroit

LATHRUP VILLAGE, Mich. – May 9, 2013 – From more than 25 fantastic candidates, Michigan First Credit Union selected Victoria Goldwater as the 2013-2014 spokesperson for Young & Free Michigan, an initiative aimed at spreading a positive financial message to young adults ages 17-25 in metro Detroit. President/CEO Michael Poulos made the announcement.

A Clinton Township native and communications major at Macomb Community College, Goldwater will be the voice of Michigan First for her peers in southeast Michigan for an entire year, serving as a full-time employee responsible for writing daily blog posts, creating weekly video updates, attending a variety of local events and participating in multiple media opportunities.

“As a credit union founded by educators, it’s critical for us to continue to share the value of making smart financial decisions with the next generation—and to do it in a way that’s fresh and exciting!” says Poulos. “Victoria has risen to that challenge and will be a wonderful ambassador for this program. With her vibrant personality and outgoing nature, we’re thrilled to watch her engage with audiences and help many more high school and college students, as well as recent graduates, gain the tools to live young and free.”

This year, Young & Free Michigan spokester applicants were required to submit an initial essay and video. Through more than 7,000 online votes, the search was narrowed down to 12 who attended Michigan First’s Show Your Stuff Meet-Up event. At the Show Your Stuff Meet-Up, each applicant participated in a series of tasks—including mock media interviews, managing a Michigan First exhibit booth and improvising a skit—to evaluate their ability to carry out the role as the next spokester. The finalists from the event were required to draft a blog post on financial responsibility and film a video entry, before a panel of judges selected the winner.

As part of the contest, Goldwater won an Apple MacBook Pro, an HD video camera and a smart phone to use on the job. She also gets to drive the Young & Free Michigan Chevy Cruze for the year, along with paid gas and insurance. The remaining 11 finalists each received a $100 gift card and Young & Free Michigan branded gifts.

Goldwater replaces outgoing Young & Free Michigan Spokester Austin Chapman, who will be returning to Lawrence Tech for his senior year.

LATHRUP VILLAGE, Mich. – Jan 15, 2013 – Michigan First Credit Union—together with Young & Free Michigan, its young adult financial education program—has given away more than $650,000 in scholarships to metro Detroit students over the past nine years. The community financial institution has expanded scholarship programs for 2013 to include a $10,000 grand prize in each of three categories.

The three scholarship categories include: a high school video contest, a high school essay contest and a college video contest. Applicants can create their response with a 60 sec. video or a 300-word essay. For each category, this year’s question is “What would you do with $50,000?” The three winners will receive a $10,000 scholarship, and runners up will receive $5,000 and $3,000 scholarships. The top ten applicants in each category will be selected by online voting and a panel of judges will select the winners.

“By expanding our scholarships this year, we’ll be able to make an even greater impact in the lives and futures of local students,” says Michael Poulos, Michigan First’s president & CEO. “This credit union was founded by Detroit teachers and education is something we believe in doing our part to support. We’ll continue to work with local schools, educators and communities through our scholarships, student-run credit union branches and the Young & Free Michigan program. Investing in the communities where our members live and work is a critical part of who we are.”

The Michigan First Foundation—a non-profit founded in 2012 by the credit union with a focus on youth and education in metro Detroit—funds the scholarships as part of $160,000 in contributions to local charitable organizations and students each year.

In addition to the more than $50,000 awarded through the three categories, up to 30 $1,000 scholarships may be awarded to entries from selected high school participants in Wayne, Oakland and Macomb Counties.

Applications will be accepted January 15 through February 12 at YoungFreeMichigan.com. All applicants must be high school seniors or current college students as well as members of Michigan First Credit Union, but interested metro Detroit students may join when they apply for the contest. The public voting for the top videos and essays will take place between February 13 and 19, determining the top 10 finalists in each category. The winners will be selected the week of March 4.

Tech-savvy credit union one of the first in Michigan to incorporate innovative feature

LATHRUP VILLAGE, Mich. – Dec. 11, 2012 – Michigan First Credit Union has launched a new feature allowing mobile deposit for iPhone, iPad and Android mobile devices. Users of the Michigan First Mobile application can now take a photo of a check with their device and deposit it directly into their checking or savings account. President/CEO Michael Poulos made the announcement.

Mobile deposit is another amenity for members that have downloaded the app, which also includes complete account access from your phone. Users can view savings and checking account histories along with Michigan First loans; as well as transferring funds, paying bills, and locating convenient branches and ATMs. More information on mobile deposit is available at MichiganFirst.com/MobileDepositFAQ.

“The use of mobile banking will continue to grow rapidly over the next several years, so we’re investing in strengthening this technology for our members,” says Poulos. “You can’t beat the convenience of snapping a quick photo with your phone to deposit a check. With today’s busy lifestyles, we’re constantly working to make the banking experience as fast and easy as possible for our members.”

Michigan First continues to focus on exceptional customer service through social media networks and new in-branch technology. These ongoing improvements help the credit union bring in more than 1,000 new members each month.

LATHRUP VILLAGE, Mich. – October 25, 2012 – Michigan First Credit Union received the statewide Louise Herring Philosophy-in-Action Member Service Award and an honorable mention (third place) at the national level for its efforts to promote homeownership through the Turning Point Home Loan program. The Michigan Credit Union League and the Credit Union National Association awards showcase the most innovative efforts to build communities through financial programs.

Launched in January 2012, Turning Point is an alternative for those who may not have previously met the terms of a traditional mortgage. As lending restrictions have tightened since 2008, some would-be borrowers face higher rates, while others may be denied altogether. This program targets those who can afford mortgages, but may have a blemish on their record, and seeks to get them the most affordable loan possible.

“We’re thrilled to be recognized for this innovative approach to lending and community outreach,” says the credit union’s President/CEO Michael Poulos. “It’s all part of Michigan First’s effort to focus on serving our members—finding ways to support them and meet their needs.”

The Herring Award winners, selected to embody the cooperative credit union philosophy, are chosen annually from among the more than 300 credit unions in Michigan and the more than 7,500 nationwide. Visit MichiganFirst.com/TurningPoint to learn more about the program.

LATHRUP VILLAGE, Mich. – June 4, 2012 – Who says a credit card can’t build community? Michigan First Credit Unionhas created a new credit card to reward consumers to buy local and support Michigan. Individuals that use the Experience Michigan First Rewards Visa® earn bonus points for local purchases and build up rewards points toward statewide and national travel, shopping and attractions or to make donations to local charities. Michigan First President/CEO Michael Poulos made the announcement.

“Our state is making a comeback because of the local institutions and local leaders we’re partnering with as part of Experience Michigan First. Now users can continue to buy local and be rewarded for it,” says Poulos. “When we sat down to create a rewards credit card, we knew we wanted to encourage supporting Michigan. We love this state and know consumers want to show off their passion in everything they do.”

The card also shows state pride, as users can choose from 12 unique photographs that capture the best of Michigan—showcasing the excitement of Greektown and the Detroit skyline to the majesty of the Mackinac Bridge and Sleeping Bear Dunes.

Rewards to choose from include gift cards to:

Michigan attractions and entertainment like the Detroit Zoo, Emagine Theaters, The Henry Ford, Michigan’s Adventure and Cheyne Park Amphitheatre;

Travel and shopping destinations such as the Grand Hotel, the Bavarian Inn, Bronner’s Christmas Wonderland, Great Lakes Crossing, Twelve Oaks and The M Den;

Local restaurants including Andiamo, Buddy’s Pizza, Cliff Bells and Muer Seafood Restaurants; and

Downloads such as deals from Groupon, purchases through QuickGifts and music from Puretracks.

Cardholders can also donate their rewards points toward 20 different local charities including Alternative for Girls, CARE of Southeastern Michigan, Detroit City Year, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, the Detroit Urban League, Focus Hope, Girl Scouts of Southeastern Michigan, Habitat for Humanity of Oakland County, the Museum of African American History, Ronald McDonald House Charities of Southeastern Michigan, the United Negro College Fund and the Southfield Community Foundation.

The Experience Michigan First card has no annual fee, no balance transfer fee and a low rate. The rewards program adds one point for every dollar and 1.5 points for spending in Michigan.
LATHRUP VILLAGE, Mich., March 12, 2012 – Michigan First Credit Union kicks off its second annual Young & Free Michigan “Spokester” search today. The winner will serve as the program’s spokesperson for a year and receive a $30,000 salary, an Apple MacBook Pro, an HD video camera and a smart phone. The winner will also enjoy use of the Young & Free Michigan car for a year, along with paid gas and insurance. President/CEO Michael Poulos made the announcement.

“If I was a few years younger, I’d love to have this job,” says Poulos. “Our spokesperson actively reaches out to the community—engaging through social media, making videos, attending events and encouraging the next generation to get a head start on being financially fit. We want them to show that smart money management doesn’t have to be a chore—it can be fun!”

To enter, individuals must be between 18 and 25 years old and bring their creativity, tech savvy and passion for helping others to a short, 60-second video demonstrating why they would be the ideal spokesperson. They will also need to submit an entertaining blog post on a financial topic, completing their entry by noon on April 16. A public vote from April 16-25 will determine the 15 finalists who also will be invited for an in-person “meet up” event before the final decision is made.

Students interested in the scholarships, offered as part of the Young & Free Michigan program, can enter by submitting a 60 second video answering the question: ”What impact will your education have on where you will be in ten years?” Applicants are encouraged to get creative with the video process and share the contest within their social networks. Beyond first prize, the foundation will award scholarships of $5,000 for second place, $2,500 for third place and an iPad 2 for the “People’s Choice” winner of online voting. Current college students and high school graduates ages 18-25 planning to attend college in the fall of 2012 can learn more at YoungFreeMichigan.com, where voters will choose the ten finalists for the top prizes.

“We began as a credit union for Detroit teachers, and we’ll never forget that heritage or diminish our deep commitment to education,” says foundation President Michael Poulos, who is also Michigan First’s president/CEO. “This year, we’ve created the foundation to leverage our commitment to metro Detroit and expand our reach. Adding the college scholarship contest gives more students the encouragement and support to continue with higher education, paying dividends for the strength of our communities and help build a better future for Michigan.”

LATHRUP VILLAGE, Mich. – Jan. 10, 2011 – In an effort to help metro Detroiters take advantage of the current housing market, Michigan First Credit Union has launched the Turning Point Home Loan. Through this program, Michigan First will be able to offer an alternative lending option to those who may not have previously met the terms of a traditional mortgage.

“The current state of the housing market creates an excellent opportunity for metro Detroiters to get into the home of their dreams,” said Chris Maynard, vice president of lending for Michigan First Credit Union. “Unfortunately the state of the financial industry may create a challenge for many consumers to get a mortgage. With the Turning Point Home Loan we are able to work closely with our members and simplify some of the requirements of conventional mortgages.”

Although 30-year fixed mortgage rates remain attractive, many financial institutions are increasing lending standards and inserting additional hurdles into the home loan process. As a result, some would-be borrowers will face higher rates, while others will be turned down altogether. The Turning Point Home Loan not only keeps rates consistent but it also helps eliminate many of the barriers to getting a loan. Details on the Turning Point home loan can be found at www.MichiganFirst.com/TurningPoint.

If you are considering looking for a new home, here are a few tips to help you be ready for the mortgage process.

Check your credit report: It is important to make sure that your credit report is up to date and correct. Your credit score will play a big role in the percentage rate and approval process for a loan.

Have a down payment: The days of zero down are gone. Take time to get your finances in order and save for a down payment before applying for a loan.

Income documentation: Loan applicants will also be required in most cases to provide document verification of their income and their assets.

Pay down debts: If you want to get a mortgage but have substantial debts, consider paying them down.

Wait: If you have recent delinquency on your credit report, maxed out lines of credit, or other blemishes on your credit report that can be taken care of, it is sometimes better to wait a few months and clean up your credit before applying for a mortgage. The better your score is, the better rate you will get and the better your chances will be for loan approval.

Because buying a home can be intimidating, Michigan First offers seminars throughout the year to help consumers better understand the process, including “Get a New Home Loan: It’s Not as Hard as You Think” from 6-8 p.m. on Feb. 15 at the credit union’s main branch in Lathrup Village. Visit www.michiganfirst.com/seminars for the full schedule of upcoming seminars on a variety of financial topics.

In addition to home loans, Michigan First also works with members for auto loans, student loans, credit cards and personal loans.

“Michigan First continues to be strong and stable with money to lend, unlike many financial institutions that have been dramatically affected by the current state of the economy,” added Maynard. “We want to help metro Detroit residents take advantage of the housing market and get into the home they deserve.”

About Michigan First Credit Union

Based in Lathrup Village, Mich., Michigan First Credit Union is one of the leading technology-focused credit unions in metro Detroit. The rapidly growing, full-service financial institution serves more than 84,000 members and has more than $600 million in assets.
