Former Mr. America, Mr. Universe and Mr. World, David Draper, who is to be honoured in London, March 2001, at the OHF Awards, was the quintessential bodybuilding idol of the 1960′s.

Those magic muscle years were dominated by such bodybuilding stars as Frank Zane, Sergio Oliva, Boyer Coe, Franco Columbu, Chris Dickerson, (first black man to win the Mr. America) and the still competing legends Reg Park, and Bill Pearl, and the newly matured Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Dave Draper’s rugged handsome good looks, wide shoulders, narrow waist and back spread, that even Arnold S. believed, in his words to be “The best in the business”. His eye catching, in vogue, long fair hair, resulted in World Wide fame and a ‘nick name’ he hated, but stuck with him – ‘The Blond Bomber’. Today, Dave still writes for the main man who made him famous i.e. Joe Weider and can be checked out online here – www.davedraper.com. Here’s a part of his story………

Dave, the youngest of three brothers, commenced school at an early age, and according to Dave, never felt the desire for ball games. Unlike his father who liked sports. Dave instead concentrated upon gymnastics from the ages of 12 to 16, and grew up fast. Grew he certainly did, unlike most budding bodybuilders who start off lean and aim to add weight and muscle size, Dave Draper started off his physical odyssey, frankly “a fat kid” known at first more for his “chubby cheeky grin and big bulky body” (his words) rather than a man of muscle. He also grew up fast taking on the responsibility of getting married when just 16 years old to Penny, eighteen months later having a daughter Jamie.

At times introvert, almost shy, the young Dave Draper set out to lose fat and gain some shape, as we said at first with gymnastics by 17 weighing 170lbs at 6ft. According to Dave, he became inspired by a muscle magazine cover and contents, and thus took up training, working mistakenly, as many beginners do, mainly on upper body, neglecting his long legs, resulting in a bulky 240lbs bodyweight and large chest of around 50ins, but thighs of just 22ins. So Dave, once aware of his mistakes, worked harder on legs, and ultimately resulted in reaching 21 inch arms, 54 inch chest, 33 inch waist and 28 inch thighs – with the power to match the muscle size.

Part 2 Continues Next Week… acknowledgements to Bob Kennedy, Joe Weider and Dave Draper

Indeed the HULK films being all action did cost Lou more than a little pain. e.g. Lou, who insisted upon doing most of his own stunts in the movies, when filming the HULK tore a bicep requiring surgery at a hospital.

It appears Lou was involved in unloading a 1000 lbs compressor unit from a truck and sustained the injury when the load shifted and he attempted to prevent its fall.

Other film starring parts were in Cannons Film release “SINBAD OF THE SEVEN SEAS” in which he appeared actually light, slimming down to just 240lbs, again doing all his own stunts in “All Fair” with George Segal and also a part in “Cage”, which called for him to be muscular but not too huge.

It is hard to appreciate, but Lou once studied acting seriously doing stage plays like Arsenic and Old Lace, touring Texas, Chicago and Canada. Even today, Lou admits to wanting to play a romantic role. He always believed acting was harder than bodybuilding, saying it is not easy getting up at 4am to be on the set at 5 .30. for literally hours of make up, plus stunts, plus training to keep that HULK shape (He should be so lucky. I worked 12 hours a day shoveling f****ng concrete – DG).

With his acting/show business interests in mind he briefly belonged to WBF, the pro wrestling under the World Bodybuilding Federation, headed by Vince McMahon, now controller of WWF. He went along with this parting for a while from IFBB with Gary Strydom, the two due to match. It never took place. Lou and WBF parted company, due some said because he developed an injury that would put him out of pro wrestling. He instead bulked up again and returned to Joe Weider’s IFBB. It was after all Joe and Ken Sprague who first recognized Lou’s potential and brought him down to California.

Thus he returned to a hyped Olympia challenge in Sept 13 at Helsinki Finland in 1992. His physique had never been better. Reg Park the Olympia MC opened that Lou “Represents everything that is good about this sport” but after a I7 year absence from the ever increasing high and tough standards of professional bodybuilding and the Olympia in particular, it was not to be the historical verdict that the 40 year old Ferrigno desired. Despite being 298lbs of muscle at 6ft 5ins he looked far too fine and came a disappointing I2th placing. Back in 93 again at the Olympia he raised his placing to 1Oth and in the premier Masters Olympia, came a far better second to Robby Robinson.

Although cursed with an injury, Carpal Tunnel syndrome, (its like wankers doom!) requiring surgery, Lou still trains hard and often. He now however concentrates more upon aerobics, e.g. stationary cycling every workout. Lou says “I used to run, but found riding a stationary bicycle is better for burning calories and increasing the efficiency of my metabolism. It is easier for the body and you do not sacrifice as much muscle mass. (You can also watch TV when cycling, and it’s in the dry!) He still lifts heavy with high intensity, using approx 15 sets per body part, training five days a week. “However, it’s a mistake to attempt to lift so heavy if you have to cheat to build muscle”, says Lou.

His philosophy in life is “Enjoy being in the moment as much as you can”. Lou enjoys show business and continues to train top movie stars as mentioned previously, including Robert De Niro, Chuck Norris of Marital arts fame and others in his million dollar ‘home gym’. Not bad for someone who was once just “….a kid from Brooklyn”.

So the real public recognition success for Lou was the T.V. Hulk! That role just did it all, but to get there he had achieved so much in the bodybuilding arena.

In 1973 aged 21 at 250lbs b/w, he takes the Mr. Eastern America, Mr. America (AFAB) and Mr. Universe titles (IFBB) in Switzerland.

Improving beyond recognition Lou then wins the Mr. International and his second Mr. Universe title at the IFBB WORLD BODYBUILDING CHAMPIONSHIPS on the 3rd to 6th October 1974, beating Ken Waller (2nd) and Paul Grant of Wales 3rd in the tall mens class. In the 1974 Mr Olympia in his first attempt Lou came 2nd to Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Despite Arnold’s relentless teasing humor, Arnold became Lou’s new idol and in 1975 in South Africa Lou stood man to man with Arnold in the classic confrontation featured in the famed movie PUMPING IRON. Lou was then a ripped 3OOlbs mass of muscles stacked on his near 6ft 5ins high frame, coming in third, beaten into second place by Serge Nubret and of course Arnold taking top title as history relates.

In 1976 Ben Weider, brother of ‘our’ Joe, named Lou Ferrigno as BODYBUILINGS MAN OF THE YEAR, when the IFBB Mr Universe Ferrigno amazed the sports world with his resounding success in ABC’s T.V. WIDE WORLD OF SPORTS. Without much previous experience, Lou finished in the money, collected $20,000 and proved along the way that weight trained muscles are fit for anything becoming the first real physique star to compete in TV’s SUPERSTARS. First married for a brief year, he later married again on 3Oth May I98O to Carla Green and they had three children Shanna Victoria, Louis Jnr. and Brent.

Although Lou originally planned to compete in the 77 Mr Olympia and try to de-throne FRANK ZANE, Lou was contacted by UNIVERSAL STUDIOS who turned down Richard Keel for a more muscular Ferrigno to play a comic book hero. So in 1977/78 Lou stars alongside Bill Bixby in the Jekyll and Hyde type of science fiction adventure taken from Marvel Comics, ie. THE INCREDIBLE HULK.

Bixby is a hapless scientist who when enraged turns into a seven foot monster, i.e the Hulk or Ferrigno. This huge success giving Lou world wide instant stardom far in excess of previous bodybuilding fame. For 14 years to 1982 the Incredible Hulk is followed by the Return of.. and the Trial of .. up until ‘88.

For some reason Lou said the body part most people noticed with the Hulk is the pecs (I would have said ‘Traps’??). So pec development was always high on his training list. Despite the earlier flop of “Hercules Unchained” which Columbia EMI pictures refused to release in the UK (it appeared on several USA worst movies lists in 1983), Lou was now on equal terms in the fame/movie TV stakes along with Arnold of “Conan” fame.

Big (although I suppose like all of us, he was once small) Lou was born on 9th November 1951 son of Matt Ferrigno a Brooklyn police lieutenant.

Little Lou, later world famous as THE HULK, had an uphill battle early on in life fighting cruel taunts and ridicule for his speech defect caused by an ear infection caught when aged just three years old.

This infection left him almost totally deaf along with such a puny body, such that even Charles Atlas would have turned down his application form, as a no-hoper. These early unhappy experiences helped drive Lou’s later deep involvement into charity work for handicapped children.

Lou’s father, a barbell fan, soon decided his son could benefit from taking the old “iron pills” i.e. the ones you have to lift. So with some persuasion, he diverted young Lou away from the comic book heroes he loved so much, one of which the Hulk, he ironically later was to portray and achieve world fame and fortune, into reading muscle journals.

So young Lou began training when 14 years old in a basement gym, weighing in at under 16OLbs and already 5ft 8ins tall. Progress soon followed and by the time he was 17 he had gained quite a lot of real muscle and had respectable I7 inch arms and other body parts to match.

Training, like many did in the early days with a home gym, Lou dreamed daily of his idols Dave Draper, Larry Scott, and Steve Reeves, himself a movie hero in the Hercules films. With such inspiration, he continued to grow muscle, albeit slowly, his first competition being the Mr. Open New Jersey Hercules.

At 19 years of age, he came 22nd. and disappointed. The only way was UP, so he trained harder, next time coming 2nd to Steve Michalik in another contest. He then competed in the Teenage Mr. America, under the AAU, in a line up that included the late Mike Mentzer (who came 2nd) – Lou came in at 4th. Around this period he met Arnold S. at the I971 AAU Mr America in New York.

Lou Ferrigno is possibly the world’s most famous ‘hard-core’ bodybuilding legends bar none; internationally famous for his role on TV screens and movies as the Incredible Hulk.

Claiming arms near 23 inches at a 285lbs bodyweight carried on a 6ft 5 inch frame. His portrayal of the alter ego of Dr.David Banner and Lou also featured in a hit USA show, “King Of Queens”. Lou plays a part as a neighbour to the star spot. He also had a co-starring role in a show “Living Single”. Screen writer David Hayter is also re-writing another series to be produced by Gale Ann Hurd of Marvel Studios.

The USA National Enquirer radio stations reported Lou Ferrigno and his wife Carol were caught in a hail of bullets (real ones) when bandits opened fire on shoppers at a crowded Californian store COSTCO. The robbers crashed into Lou’s grocery cart when making their getaway. Several shoppers were wounded and one killed. Lou and Carla were unhurt and shielded by their car. Police arrested one robber, but the others escaped.

Lou also featured in the movie, “Bedazzled”. Still updating; if you happen to live in the States and got the ‘mazooma’ to spend, you can contact big Lou and he will become your personal trainer, training you from his Santa Monica home. His clientèle already consist of judges, dentists, lawyers, and it is said Michael Jackson (yes that one) recommended him.

Lou also has received world gym celebrity of the year award 2001, the trophy being presented by old Arnie himself at the AFW (Arnold Fitness Weekend) Lou said “I was very flattered to receive such a meaningful honour”. I think he deserved it. Meanwhile let us take a break, and next week we shall be looking at the career of Bodybuilding legend Lou Ferrigon right from the beginning.

So as we come to the final chapter about one of the world’s greatest Bodybuilding Legends Roy Duval, he talks about chest training, and all of the exercises he used to get those amazing pecs he had…

A sample chest routine consisted of at first emphasis on expanding the thorax or rib box with chest expansion, only achieved by a combination of heavy breathing promoted by tough leg work (i.e. squats) followed by LIGHT stretching pullovers on bench in the classic squat and pullover combo.

The pectorals which are easy to develop and respond well, (and can almost be over developed, so caution is required), are worked by decline bench presses with dumbbells for lower pecs, decline barbell bench presses, low incline barbell bench presses and parallel bar dips – again averaging 9 sets at 10 to12 reps, all the time using respectable poundages, which require forcing out the last few reps to complete a set.

Bodybuilding Training Basics - Yet it brings about remarkable results. Like all champions Roy never stopped experimenting to discover those exercises, sets, reps and systems, which brought him personally, the best results. And over time YOU will discover your own combinations, and just what you can do to save time and effort and pain, learning by others’ mistakes if you are wise, the commonest of which is to OVER-TRAIN often due to over enthusiasm, which unfortunately can lead to despair. Make haste slowly and do not attempt to follow the routines of champions until you have put in the time and effort it takes to reach the top.

A firm believer in bodybuilding supplements, Roy says, “We bodybuilders purposely tear down muscle tissue in the hope that the protein we consume will build new tissues and improve our physiques. It is obvious then that a good high quality protein supplement is necessary”. Roy Duval always gave credit to those who advised, helped or influenced him in his bodybuilding career, from Wag Bennett’s early encouragement, to Len Sells inspiration and personal coaching, to Boyer Coe and Dennis Tinerino, two great USA muscle champions.

Bill Pearl, his perennial favourite whose shape he admired so much and also to the late Vince Gironda who for a period trained Roy and got him according to his own opinion in his best shape ever. Modesty forbids Roy mentioning the many bodybuilders who were fired up to train in an attempt to reach his superb physical standards. Throughout the competitive world of bodybuilding, Roy Duval represented Britain with great success and always, always with supreme dignity. A true ambassador for bodybuilding.

Training philosophies and practice
Roy was a great believer in plenty of leg training, saying, “Leg training is considered hard work by most, but actually by working your legs, you not only increase leg size but you condition yourself faster.

This is because leg work incites heavy breathing, helps to condition you, and aid you in gaining bodyweight. Squats do more to increase metabolism and thus helps many to put on weight, while at the same time, leg work helps one to grow stronger. So leg work should be included in your training if you hope to be better developed and stronger”.

Practising what he preached, Roy never neglected leg work in training. Like most top bodybuilders, did a lot of squats, which quickly made his legs respond, later enabling him to concentrate on other exercises to maintain the balance. Leg exercises as well as basic squats, included ‘hack’ squats, leg extensions, leg curls and all varieties of calf raises, always aiming for full stretch of calf muscles.

Reps were usually high at 20 on average, using 5 sets of each exercise. Every exercise began with a light warm up set, followed by ever increasing poundages, the following sets, although still aiming not to drop reps. Roy at times trained his calves 4 to 5 times a week. All exercises were completed in good form with complete extension and contraction.

Most notable in Roy’s physique were his terrific full bodied biceps and arms in general. Huge muscular arms are of course the hall mark of a champion bodybuilder, some muscle men being able to sway physique judges solely on the size of their arm’s, and overlooking other body parts, such is the magnetism of mighty arms. Roy at just 5ft 7ins, had huge arms, with a perfect harmony between triceps and biceps.

Like all other groups, with the exception of calves, he only trained arms twice a week on a split routine and set system, using 3 exercises for the biceps for 5 to 6 sets of 10 reps – e.g. for BICEPS he did:

Single arm seated concentrated curls, preacher curls & incline dumbbell curls. For TRICEPS, exercised immediately after biceps, he used triceps push-downs on pulley 5 x 10, super setted with triceps kick backs. Then triceps extensions, single arm again with cables, alternated with parallel bar dips. 5 x 10 reps. Roy also trained shoulders on the same day as arms.

Anyway, we are saving the best till last, and next week we shall be learning from the master who runs over a few bodybuilding exercises for chest training.

Roy Duval really is a bodybuilding legend, and I hope you enjoy this second part of his life story that picks up on his bodybuilding career in the 1970s.

Owzabout that then?
In 1974, when the now Sir Jimmy Saville OBE was NABBA’s figurehead, and Paul Getty, the worlds richest man, sat in the front row, (next to Bob Kennedy – I was ten rows back!). Roy won the Amateur Mr. Universe, being the first British bodybuilding for 10 years to take the trophy since John Hewlett. He also received a silver trophy presented by the French Federation of Bodybuilders, for the best presentation (posing). This was the year Chris Dickerson, a former subject in our Natural Development Mag series of profiles, won the Pro title.

After winning the 1974 Universe, Roy lived for a while in South Africa, liking the place, after having made previous visits as a guest star at the Republic of South Africa shows. He was then working as a medical retailer for a pharmaceutical company called Pro Med/Med Nim, he also spent 6 months with Merc Laboratories and with partner John Borland, had the Roy Duval Health Studios.

In fact throughout his bodybuilding career, Roy always managed to hold down a full time job, including working for a pet food company during the 1960′s and early ‘70′s. All the time Roy had a great interest in nutrition, studying the subject whenever time allowed. Roy also owned and manages his own gyms at home in UK and abroad, currently supplying his own brand of sports supplements, which he has marketed in the West Country since 1978.

True bodybuilding transcends politics and self centred organisations and Roy did equally well in the IFBB. In 1979 Roy trained for and won the IFBB Mr. Britain and IFBB World championships and the following year, 1980, competed in the Olympia, not in the winners frame but still good enough to out point such well known bodybuilding stars as Ken Waller, the first Mr. world, Samir Bannout and Casey Viator.

Always an ambassador for bodybuilding, Roy guest starred at NABBA’s 1988 West Britain show in super shaper and said he “No longer wished to compete to allow younger men coming through”. However he did continue to train hard, and compete again climaxing his career by winning the NABBA Masters Universe in 1992 – a fitting ending to his competitive years.

He still trains and keeps in top shape, enjoying life to the full, running his supplement business and gym, helped all the while by wife Anna, a former winner of the WABBA Miss Europe Figure contest in 1989. More about bodybuilding legend Roy Duval coming soon, with an insider look at his training philosophy for bodybuilders.

Today we shall be taking a look back at the bodybuilding career of former, Mr Universe, Europe and Mr World… Roy Duval, a true bodybuilding ambassador.

In the year 1963, when Britain had the coldest January and February since 1740, and by contrast, the popular song of the day was “Those Lazy, Hazy Days of Summer”. Britain was rejected entry into the Common Market by De Gaulle and Winston Churchill became an honorary citizen of the U.S.A .

A young Roy Duval went with a friend to a bodybuilding show at Harlow. The ‘star’ of the show was LEN SELL and Roy just ‘couldn’t believe his eyes’. Although training mainly for boxing, Roy’s coach, highly enlightened at that period, did allow Roy to use weights, he was however no muscle man, weighing around 9½ stone at the time.

Inspired by Len, Roy joined at first the Walthamstow Barbell Club, which unfortunately for Roy, concentrated more upon power-lifting via the then popular ‘strength set’ or Olympic lifting, so to further his bodybuilding and shaping desires, he began training at Wag Bennett’s gym in June, I964. Wag, who recognised championship material by experience (remember a guy called Arnold something…) said correctly that Roy had “Good potential”.

Roy was also aided and inspired by muscle man, John Hewlett, the 1964 Amateur Mr Universe winner.

With plenty of training under his belt at Wags Forest Gate gym, Roy began to enter contests, placing 4th in the Junior Mr. South Britain on 31st October 1964, then 3rd in Junior Mr. London after which he continued to train harder than ever and compete more often with success for six years, rarely placing lower than 4th and all the time gaining both extra muscle and experience. He was at that period rather bulky, around 2OOlbs, chest 51, arms I81/2, thighs 26. His ambition then being to buy and own his own gym.

Roy then moved his training to Len Sell’s gym, having received schedules and advice already from Len and the change in his physique was noticeable, following a four day a week training program, although Roy’s own quiet dignified demeanour never altered, then or later.

He won the 1971 Mr. S.E. Britain, Mr London and his height class (2) in the Mr. Europe. In 1972 he won Mr. UK and next year on May 26th in ‘73 after three years placing, at first 3rd, then 2nd, took the Mr Britain, described by Oscar Heidenstam then as being “Magnificent” and posed with flawless dignity plus his class and overall Mr Europe (The Pins Del Athlete De Europe formerly won by Steve Reeves) held on June 3rd in NEVERS, France along with winning his height class in the Universe. Roy’s role models still remained Len Sell, John Hewett and later Frank Zane.

From there, Roy in the best shape of his life, (said many), left London on Nov 9th, 1973, entered and won the AAU Mr. World staged by the York Barbell Co., this contest held in Harrisburg PA, USA held in conjunction with the World Power-lifting Championships, being first run in 1970 and won by Ken Waller of the USA, and later Al Beckles of UK in 1972.

Roy was sponsored by Franklin Page and at 12 stone 4lbs, won not only the top title, but also 4 sub-divisions. There were 26 competitors primarily USA entries, but also from Canada, Jamaica and Zambia. Back in Feb. 1974, ‘Muscular Development’ writer Len Bosland, wrote of Roy, then 28 years old and working in the pet food industry – (Roy worked throughout his physique competitive career, never relying on muscles to pay his way),

“His physique showed the results of many hours of intelligently applied effort in developing a real outstanding physique. His poses well chosen and executed, his stage presence and personal magnetism, mark him as a real champion”.

Clarence Bass, who had never seen Duval before, wrote at the time in Iron Man…

“He has an exceptional physique”, with Roy taking trophies for Best Legs and Best Chest along the way. Bass went on, “I was indeed impressed by the fabulous Englishman. He is outstanding in every way. Equally impressive when relaxed and posing. He has beautiful balance of symmetry and ruggedness. Here is a physique with dignity, that puts Roy Duval, the new Mr. World, into the ‘truly extraordinary’ category”.

Praise indeed from an experienced physique man himself. The late Dave Johns, also competing, came 4th. Never one to sit back on his laurels, Roy continued his tough training regimes then using the split system of training upper body one day and lower body the next, followed by a rest day – a system which certainly agreed with Roy at that period.

He was becoming widely recognised and appreciated as cover man on many a muscle magazine, and Roy also wrote some fine bodybuilding training articles setting out for all to see, his personal schedules and muscle making knowledge, plus his own unique winning strategies. Extremely popular and approachable as a guest star, great value for promoters and fans alike with his top, always in shape condition.

Let’s take a look at what you can find on Google about Anabolic Steroids, and I have to admit there is a lot of good steroid info out there…

To C. Perry – there’s a big difference between the prednisone (a glucocorticoid) that you took which acts primarily as an antiinflammatory and immunosuppressant versus anabolic steroids that athletes take which increase …
