Our friend from Transmission Films is proud to launch the official Chasing Great film trailer.

This emotive and explosive trailer gives New Zealanders their very first look into this highly anticipated film. Chasing Great takes audiences into the mind of a champion - with unprecedented access to Richie McCaw, exclusive family archives and never before seen footage.

The trailer soundtrack is from another high achieving New Zealander, Lorde. Lorde’s cover of Everybody Wants To Rule The World was a perfect fit.

Chasing Great is an insightful portrayal that weaves Richie McCaw’s life story into his final season as an All Black, revealing the determination and mental toughness of an international sporting legend who still sees himself as an ‘ordinary guy’ from small town New Zealand.

The film opens in cinemas nationwide on September 1.

Richie McCaw comments “I was always quite keen to make sure I kept some of the private stuff private, not for any reason other than I just felt that was the right thing to do… But I got to the end and one of the reasons for doing this is, I took a lot out of the opportunities I got and this is a chance to try and inspire perhaps some young kids or show that you don’t have to be given some super human talent or anything to fulfil your dreams… it’s not something magic, it’s a bit of dedication, hard work - those sort of things that, allow you to fulfil those dreams.”

The film was directed by Michelle Walshe and Justin Pemberton. Michelle shares, “This is a film for New Zealanders young and old, it will really connect with anyone interested in what it takes for an ordinary person to achieve phenomenal accomplishments." Justin adds, “Ultimately, what grabs me are stories about people who are extraordinarily driven, and the sporting arena is rich with inspiring passionate people - and it’s the intriguing character study that really excites me.”

Apparently not - according to a survey of more than 1200 Australians, more than 70 per cent have written a love letter – resounding evidence that in spite of the rise of new technology, a good old fashioned love letter still has its place in today’s fast-paced society!

The competition for the road trip of a lifetime, Dometic Follow the Sun 2016, has partnered with the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) to provide the added incentive for entrants to cruise in comfort for a cause and help in the quest to raise awareness and save lives.

NBCF ambassador and Melbourne mum, Sarah Singer, survived her battle with cancer at just 32, inspiring her to leave the corporate life behind and move the family from London to Melbourne for a better quality of life and to realise her dreams.

As Ms Singer discovered, nothing changes a person’s perspective on life more than a cancer diagnosis and now 40, she wants to be able to encourage others to fulfil their dreams, such as travelling Australia and help others overcome their battles.

Market leader in solutions for mobile living, Dometic Australia, is about enriching people’s experiences away from home and they are able to help promote this via the major competition Follow the Sun.

In its third time running, the Dometic Follow the Sun competition provides the opportunity for three couples or families to win an expenses-paid three-month trip around Australia as Dometic Ambassadors, worth up to $35,000.

St Kilda Festival announces BRIGGS to line

The City of Port Phillip is proud to announce Australian rapper, lyricist and hip hop artist Briggs is joining the 2016 St Kilda Festival line up.

Renowned within the Australian music industry for his albums The Blacklist and Sheplife, Briggs’ thought provoking style and lyrics are traditional, paying homage to his Yorta-Yorta heritage that represents a long line of leaders and story tellers with a modern sound and hip-hop fusion uniquely Australian.

Briggs joins St Kilda Festival on Sunday 14 February 2016, replacing Gurrumul, and will be performing a number of Gurrumul songs in tribute to the artist who is no longer able to perform due to health reasons. Briggs has said he is honoured to perform at St Kilda Festival this year.

“G is my brother, I trust he will be better soon and back to his rock star self. These aren’t ideal conditions to accept a show because I never want to hear of a friend unwell but I’m honoured Gurrumul asked I step in for this date he can’t fulfill, we are family and that’s my brother. I’ll endeavour to do him and the team at Skinnyfish Music justice. I’ll bring my amazing band and represent for us both at this year’s St Kilda Fest,” said Briggs.

The gem in South Australia’s tourism crown will play host to the Kangaroo Island Gourmet Gallop on January 24, giving locals and tourists alike the opportunity to combine a travel itinerary packed with spectacular sights with all the festivities of a day at the races.

The island is a foodie’s paradise, with smoked meats, olives, cheeses, honey and wine to tantalise the taste buds – and these are among the trackside treats punters can experience at the KI Gourmet Gallop. Co-founder and chef Rachel Hannaford has incorporated her family legacy recipes into her menus and draws on her experience of food cultures stretched across the globe. “We really pride ourselves on using local produce in innovative ways and have become known for our extensive variety of Asian and European styles,” Ms Hannaford said.

Finalists announced for Australia’s Favourite Event

Australians select their top four favourite events as competition in the 2015 Australian Event Awards hots up.

Following thousands of votes, the Chelsea FC v Sydney FC International Football Friendly, the 50th Anniversary of the 1965 Freedom Ride, Perth International Arts Festival Presents The Giants and the Tottenham Hotspur FC International Football Tour have been announced as finalists for Australia’s Favourite Event after the public narrowed down the pool of 31 nominees selected by the expert judging panel.

Australia’s Favourite Event is the only category decided by public vote at the awards, which recognise the best events and achievements in the nation’s multi-billion dollar events industry.

With just a handful of events now left in the competition, the race to become Australia’s Favourite Event shifts into a higher gear as the four finalists battle to amass as many votes as possible before voting closes at 9pm on 17 November, the night of the Australia Event Awards. The nation’s most popular event will be announced at the end of the awards ceremony. Anyone in Australia with an email address can vote at http://www.eventawards.com.au.

The Chelsea FC v Sydney FC Football Friendly played at ANZ Stadium in front of a capacity crowd was described by Chelsea officials as the most successful international tour ever undertaken by the recent English Premier League Champions. Over 20,000 people travelled to Sydney from across Australia to attend the game.

The re-enactment of the 1965 Freedom Ride – a bus tour of University of Sydney students which shone a spotlight on the grave state of the nation’s race relations – brought original Freedom Riders together with current University students and staff to mark the 50th anniversary of the historic event.

Joined by Australian musicians Paul Kelly and Troy Cassar-Daley, the re-enactment toured regional NSW towns, staging free community events and public concerts to raise awareness of the ongoing inequalities faced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians.

The 2015 Perth International Arts Festival was an exploration of the epic and the intimate, from the incredible Giants to the most delicate Butterfly. The 23 day festival presented a diverse program of theatre, dance, opera, circus, music, visual art, film and literary events, attracting more than 1.7 million people to the largest cultural event in Western Australia’s history.

The Tottenham Hotspur FC International Football Tour featured a friendly against Sydney FC in front of a crowd of more than 70,000 at Sydney’s ANZ Stadium. During their four day stay in Australia, Tottenham players visited children at Sydney Children’s Hospital, had a meet and greet with fans in Pitt Street Mall and held an open training session which attracted around 4,000 fans.

Emirates’ English-themed Marquee off to a flying start on Derby Day

The Melbourne Cup Carnival has officially begun and Emirates has already experienced a winning day in its English-themed Marquee for AAMI Victoria Derby Day. While on the racetrack, trainer Mick Price landed the 2500m Victoria Derby with jockey Craig Newitt galloping to the finish.

Welcoming guests from across the country and the world, the Emirates Marquee this year has taken inspiration from one of the airline’s most popular destinations, England, and Emirates’ network of English destinations including London Gatwick, London Heathrow, Manchester, Birmingham and Newcastle.

Guests in the Marquee walked through the Georgian-themed façade into a world where the Newcastle Arms meets the sophistication of Babington House in Somerset and the chic Soho House in London.

Celebrity guests that visited the Emirates Marquee included Millie Mackintosh, Stephen Jones, Julia Bishop, Olympia Valance, Eddie McGuire, Gillon McLachlan, Rachel Finch, The Real Housewives of Melbourne and Francesca and Gretel Packer, Michael Turnbull, Tim Robards and Anna Heinrich, Lord Mayer Robert Doyle, Her Excellency Governor General Linda Dessau, Kerri-Anne Kennerly, Travis Cloke and Rebeccah Panozza.

More men die from prostate cancer each year in Australia than women die from breast cancer – around 3,300 fathers, sons, partners and brothers are lost to the disease every year.

Many men who go through treatment for prostate cancer suffer ongoing side effects afterwards, such as bowel and urinary problems, erectile difficulties and poor mental health. This has a huge impact on their lifestyle, yet is often not discussed before they make the decision to have treatment.

Thanks to funds raised by the Mo community, the Movember Foundation – the largest non-government funder of prostate cancer research in the world – is able to fund projects that have a real impact on the lifestyle of men post-treatment.

Paul Villanti, Executive Director of the Movember Foundation said the Foundation is uniquely placed to bring clinical leaders together, encouraging collaboration and the sharing of knowledge to develop ground-breaking approaches that will improve treatment and care and help men to return to as normal a life as possible post treatment.

“We’re leading the revolution in redefining success in prostate cancer treatment and care by investing in world-first initiatives, such as our TrueNTH program – a global project that helps men living with the disease get access to information that enhances their quality of life, care and support,” he added.

Now in its 13th year, the annual Movember campaign is asking men to once again answer the hairy call and grow the best moustache they can muster over the 30 days of November. And this year, it’s not just Mo Bros who are having all the fun. For the first time, women are also able to do something tangible to support Movember, by participating in the MOVE challenge.

MOVE, the first four letters of Movember, is a 30-day fitness challenge and a way for women to help change the face of men’s health by inspiring the men in their lives to get active and take control of their physical and mental wellbeing.

Since starting in Melbourne in 2003, more than five million people have joined the Movember movement, helping fund over 1,000 men’s health projects in 21 countries.

Free personal safety app launched by the mother of murdered teenager

Rising from a devastating tragedy, Sonya Ryan, the mother of schoolgirl Carly Ryan murdered by an internet predator in 2007 has today launched a new personal safety app, called Thread.

The Carly Ryan Foundation partnered with digital engagement specialists KOJO, and with support of the Government of South Australia and Google, developed Thread to help children and teenagers stay connected, deal with unsafe situations online, away from home, and everywhere in between.

After losing her daughter to an internet predator in 2007, who is now serving a life sentence behind bars, Sonya Ryan dedicated her life to educating young people and parents of the dangers of cyber crime.

Speaking at the launch of Thread she said the app has been developed to ensure the safety of those in our society who are most vulnerable.

“My daughter Carly was groomed by a middle-aged man who posed as a teenage boy online for over 18 months, operating over 200 fake profiles to lure children online. As the first girl in Australia to be murdered by an internet predator it opened up a critical dialogue on the safety of young people both on and offline.

“I am delighted to officially launch Thread nationally, now available free on Google Play and the Apple App Store, to help prevent this type of crime happening to another child. The app has been created by digital specialists KOJO, who work across huge commercial brands, the sophistication of the technology ensures its reliability and simplicity of use for both parents and children.

“The reality is that not everyone has the right intentions, with this app we can potentially prevent crimes from happening. If Carly had this technology, the outcome may have been different for her,” said Ms Ryan.

At its core, KOJO developed Thread to allow users to check in with their location to show they’re ok, start discussions with trusted contacts about online or offline dangers and, in the event of an emergency, send their location while dialling 000. Thread is pin protected so users can be assured that the communication they receive is genuine.

“If a teenager is at a friend’s house or a party and feels unsure of their safety, they can discreetly send their location to their emergency contacts. Thread provides an immediate connection between that child’s location, trusted contacts and emergency services,” said Ms Ryan.

Thread has also been flagged for use in domestic violence cases, creating a vital link to support those in potentially dangerous situations.

“What defines us as humans and Australians is how well we rise from such devastating situations. Thread ensures we are on our way to really making a difference and as a community able to prevent these horrific crimes from occurring,” concluded Ms Ryan.

The Minister for Education and Child Development, the Hon Susan Close MP, said the South Australian Government is a proud supporter of the work of the Carly Ryan Foundation and that the app provides a valuable resource for children and their parents.

“As a parent, you often feel conflicted about how quickly children grow up, and it can be a particularly daunting transition for both parent and child when children start venturing out alone.

“Thread helps families and friendship groups to retain a sense of safety and connectedness in spite of any physical separation and, in a time of need, will allow users to send prompt and relevant information to a preferred contact group.

“It provides another layer of care and protection for young people and peace of mind for parents and guardians,” said Minister Close.

The Children’s eSafety Commissioner, Alastair MacGibbon commented that technology like Thread is critical to ensuring the safety of the community.

“Thread is a powerful tool that can keep children and the wider community safe, especially those in vulnerable situations, whether it involves meeting a stranger online or family violence. Thank you to Sonya and everyone at the Carly Ryan Foundation for their continuous efforts in this space,” said Mr MacGibbon.

Independent Senator for South Australia and long-time supporter of the Carly Ryan Foundation, Nick Xenophon commented that Thread will protect young people from predators.

“Thread enables young people and their families to be safe from predators. If all young people have access to Thread, it will make for a much safer community.

“It’s important that every tier of government; state, federal and even local governments, come together to promote this app and the benefits it can have on our community,” concluded Mr Xenophon.

Samantha McClung crowned Miss Universe New Zealand 2015

Samantha McClung was crowned Miss Universe New Zealand 2015, before a packed crowd at the Skycity Theatre, and an international audience watching the live stream at nextmissnz.com.

McClung, 20, lives in Christchurch but spent many years of her childhood in the Marlborough Sounds. She is a qualified make-up artist who has worked in both Australia—McClung lived in Perth for 18 months—and New Zealand.

McClung was overjoyed by the crowning but admitted it hadn’t fully sunk in.
The title was decided by both an international judging panel and the voting public, with 50 per cent determined by each group.

Special guest judges Ben Chan of Bench, one of the Philippines’ premier fashion labels, and MJ Lastimosa, Miss Universe Philippines 2014, flew in to Auckland to spend several days with the 20 finalists, in interviews and watching them perform live on stage. Both had the advantage of having met the finalists as part of their overseas retreat, which this year took place in the Philippines with the generous support of Bench, the Philippine Department of Tourism and the Tourism Promotions’ Board.

They joined New Zealanders Megan Alatini, Steve Broad and Evana Patterson on the judging panel, whose scores were tallied alongside those of the voting public, who had been sending their votes since August. A sixth judge, Areena Deshpande, was unable to attend after giving birth last week.

In addition to the crown, McClung drives away with the premier prize of a Honda Jazz RS Sport Limited, which is hers for the duration of her reign, as well as prizes from Bike Barn, New Face Laser and Cosmetic Clinic, Lipidol, Beau Joie champagne, and others.

Presently McClung is spending the night at the Skycity Grand Hotel as part of her prize.

She beat surf instructor Hannah Henderson from the Bay of Plenty and mental-health nurse Gabrielle Manaloto from Auckland, who came second and third.

Once again, Miss Universe New Zealand partnered with Variety, the Children’s Charity, for which it had raised over NZ$60,000 in the previous two years.

McLaren Valley Music & Arts Festival Moves To Auckland

McLaren Valley Music & Arts Festival is moving to Auckland.

The new music and arts festival featuring headline acts including Disclosure, The Flaming Lips and Alison Wonderland, was scheduled to be held from January 10-12 at McLaren Falls Park near Tauranga, Bay of Plenty.

The move has come about after ongoing negotiations with residents in the area failed to resolve a number of outstanding concerns.

Festival Director Paxton Talbot said he was “incredibly disappointed” to be unable to mount the festival at the picturesque site, but said the event will go ahead at a central Auckland location on Monday 11 and Tuesday 12 January.

“We have been working extremely hard for many months to go through the resource consent process, but ultimately we needed to make a decision to move the Festival. We did explore a range of other options in the Bay of Plenty and other areas, but Auckland is the best solution given the timeframe.

“We know so many people were excited about this Festival and we are sorry to disappoint our fans who have believed in the vision. We are working to create something special for the event in Auckland”

Mr Talbot said he was working closely with all contracted artists on the change of location.

Ticket purchasers will be offered full refunds or ticket holders can retain their tickets for transfer to the new event. Details of the new event, including confirmation of the venue, ticketing transfer options and an announcement of more acts, will be released on Wednesday 28 October.

As always, the exhibition will be rich in experiences with plenty of opportunities for visitors to network with existing contacts, while meeting new suppliers. M. The organisers are expecting more than 25,000 visitors coming through the doors to delve into the comprehensive showcase of innovative products in all areas of cosmetics and personal care, spa and wellness, packaging and professional hair.

“The strong turnout today is indicative of the importance of the show in the country,” said M. Gandhi. “beautyexpo continues to expand, innovate and remains the largest event for the beauty industry in Malaysia.”

The four day exhibition will host a new charitable initiative by UBM: ‘Beauty with a Soul’, whereby visitors will be able to get a 20-minute hair trim with a donation of just 20 ringgits by award winning stylists. All proceeds will go to charity. Other activities also include the eagerly awaited APHCA National Hair and Make Up Competition and celebrity hair shows from Alex Lim and Michael Poh.

Held alongside beautyexpo, Asia’s Esthetic Skincare Expo (AES) returns for its third edition. The premier beauty event, by invitation only, will welcome the beauty industries elite and offer senior decision makers the chance to sample high end beauty products in a focused business environment. Educational sessions will also provide insight into important topics with an exciting line-up of industry veterans and speakers including renowned hairstylist and philanthropist, Datin Winnie Loo, who will discuss the merits of branding.

A key component of the trade programme is business matching at AES designed to give exhibitors and high-profile visitors the opportunity to meet and engage in pre-scheduled one-on-one meetings. Buyers will have the chance to meet with exhibiting companies from Poland, the Middle East and Korea.

Beautyexpo and AES will be taking place from the 16-19 October 2015 at the KL Convention Centre.
